RCMP files from January 4 - 10 Arthur Beaudette News Advertiser :ĂŶƵĂƌLJ ϰ 08:03 – Report of mischief. Caller indicated that their truck’s gasoline tank had been drilled in the past few days while parked at their home in Vegreville. Under investigation.

11:34 – Report of mischief where a residential fence was damaged some time that morning. The caller feels they know who may be involved. Under investigation.

18:13 – Report of a possibly intoxicated male walking along the highway near the east edge of Vegreville.

Members located the individual who was exhibiting signs of impairment and stated that he was on his way to Ontario.

Members provided the individual a safe place to sleep for the night and the client was released sober. :ĂŶƵĂƌLJ ϱ 01:45 – Request to assist the Vegreville Fire Department with a small structure fire in Vegreville. A shed on the back of the property was believed to be suspicious in nature. Under investigation.

07:18 – Report of a break and enter to a business in Vegreville overnight. A lock on a fence was cut and the property was entered. It appears that there was an attempt to steal a vehicle which failed. Forensics was consulted and the matter is under investigation.

08:48 – Reports of threats uttered between 2 residents in Vegreville.

Members attended and attempted to mediate the situation. There continues to be tension between the two neighbours and members urged them to act more maturely about their differences.

10:14 – While on patrol, members observed a vehicle from a file in another jurisdiction. The vehicle had been taken without consent. Members verified the vehicle was indeed the one in question and the registered owner was contacted. The registered owner was pleased his vehicle was found but did not want to press charges at this time.

He arranged to retrieve the vehicle.

15:51 – Report of fraud. The complainant indicated that $750 was taken from their account. The complainant indicated that their identification had been lost/stolen (months prior) and an attempt was made to open an account in their name. Members are investigating the matter with the bank. The investigation is ongoing. *** It is important to cancel ID and inform banks shortly after any such loss.

16:10 – Multiple reports of someone

laying in the ditch near Mundare.

Members located the individual who was transported to Vegreville by another agency. The individual indicated that they were headed to Lloydminster.

A family member picked the client up from Vegreville.

18:02 – Report of break and enter and theft in Ranfurly. A shed was broken into and a multiple items including tools were taken. CCTV is being reviewed and the matter is under investigation.

19:33 – Traffic stop attempted in Mundare after receiving a call. The vehicle refused to stop and fled. The vehicle was tracked and other resources such as air services and dog services were consulted. The vehicle was located shortly after with the assistance of neighbouring detachments. The individual who had active warrants was taken into custody, held for a hearing, and then remanded.

The driver possessed a GDL which resulted in the vehicle being towed and seized for 7 days as well as the license being suspended roadside.

02:15 – Traffic stop conducted in Vegreville for sobriety check. It was determined that the driver had warrants out of Edmonton. The subject was arrested and released roadside with additional documents for court.

10:14 – Traffic collision on Hwy 15 near Hilliard. Semi vs minivan. The driver of the minivan was charged with failure to proceed safely after stopping.

There were no injuries.

03:12 – Call received from CN police to report malfunctioning rail crossing in Vegreville.

10:20 – Report of possible vehicle theft in progress in Vegreville. Members attended and it was determined that the truck was being worked on and in the process of being sold.

10:02 – 911 call to report a found firearm at a residence in Vegreville.

Members attended and it was determined that the gun had been modified in multiple ways and only able to shoot BBs.

02:22 – Traffic stop conducted. It was determined that the driver did not have a valid driver’s license, was displaying an improper plate, no registration, and no insurance. The driver was charged accordingly. The no insurance carries a mandatory court summons. The vehicle was towed.

17:31 – Traffic enforcement in the area resulting in a breath demand (blew zero) and approximately 8 speeding tickets. One driver received a ticket with a voluntary penalty of $273 for travelling 142 kmph in a 110 kmph zone.

20:08 – Traffic stop conducted in Vegreville on a vehicle with expired registration. While investigating the member noted an odour of liquor on the driver’s breath. A roadside demand was given and the driver blew a caution.

10:09 – Report of an area Church with a larger and allowed gathering.

Members attended and it was determined that the gathering was over the mandated 15 percent of capacity.

Members consulted with the organizers and discussed the regulations surrounding COVID. They will be following up in the future.

18:02 – Report of an abandoned stroller on 52 Ave in Vegreville.

Members attended and located the stroller, confirming it was unoccupied.

They moved the stroller away from the sidewalk and updated the caller.

During the week there were 86 calls for service made in total including: 1 false alarm, 2 false 911s, 1 animal strikes, 1 Health Act (COVID), 3 wellbeing checks, 7 calls under the Mental Health Act, and approximately 24 tickets from traffic enforcement.

Letters of Support Requested for Universal Broadband Funding to over 24,000 customers across northeastern Alberta and northwestern Saskatchewan. We have built 950 km of transit fiber between our towers over the past couple of years to increase speeds… so this grant would help us build the infrastructure required to meet or beat the CRTC requirements of 50 Mbps downloads and 10 Mbps uploads.”

If the grant application is successful, Lafrance said they hope to complete construction over the next two years.

The Town of Mundare, Town of Vegreville, and Two Hills County councils passed motions to write letters of support on Dec. 8, Dec. 14, and Dec. 16 respectively.

Michelle Pinon News Advertiser Internet provider MCSnet is asking local municipalities for letters of support to include in its application for federal funding.

Rhonda Lafrance, Marketing Coordinator MCSnet, said the company is applying to the newly announced $1.75 billion Universal Broadband Fund to support high-speed internet projects in rural and remote communities.

Lafrance stated, “As part of the application process, we are asking for a letter of support from your council. We understand there could be other local companies applying to this fund, and we encourage you to write letters of support for them in addition to ours if asked. Our goal is to receive funding for this area so that rural Alberta receives the infrastructure it needs for reliable broadband.

Still Outraged Dear Editor, I, along with other Albertans, am still outraged that Alberta government MLAs, ministers, and staffers left the country during the Christmas holidays while telling us to limit our own traveling due to the ongoing COVID pandemic. The fact that only two of the staff members were fired while the MLAs and Ministers were simply “demoted” is also equally insulting to us Albertans. They are elected as leaders for our province and should be held to a high standard of trust and accountability for not just their constituents, but all of Alberta as well.

If Premier Kenney truly wants to take responsibility and show leadership, he needs to ask for these MLAs’ resignations for their seats in the Legislature. Should they refuse, they should be removed from the government caucus and be forced to sit as independent MLAs. Contact the Premier and your local MLA if you feel the same.

Dane, Thank you for writing. There is no question that many feel the same as you. It is hard to find the words to describe what seems to be a sense of entitlement by some.

Keep in mind that this happened all across Canada. One senior bureaucrat overseeing border and travel health even accepted an Air Canada trip to Jamaica because she was a social media influencer. Also, one recent survey revealed that 48 per cent of Canadians admitted to gathering outside their household over the holidays despite restrictions. There is one word we need to impress on our elected officials and that is RECALL. The only province or territory with recall election laws currently in force is British Columbia. - AB

Last week as we were preparing to go to press, PM Trudeau stated in a press conference that he was ‘frustrated’ with the pace of vaccine rollout. He went on to say that he was troubled by the slow pace of the COVID-19 vaccine rollout and is vowing to raise the lackluster vaccination numbers with premiers during a conference call later this week.

Well, luckily for PM Trudeau, I’m here to help out. Generally speaking, when people are frustrated or troubled with something they talk about it. Parents will talk to their kids, kids will talk with their parents, students and teachers talk, coaches and their team, and employees and their bosses. I think while PM Trudeau wants to have another meeting, and likely more consultations, his time might be spent, like others, talking to his boss.

PM Trudeau; we as your employers had a meeting. It wasn’t big, or long and there were no crocodile tears or costumes, but it was (as meetings should be) efficient. Here’s what we came up with. We’re frustrated and troubled as well. Our top person, the one leading our country continues to be pathetically ineffective.

Defenders of our PM or card-carrying Liberals will immediately go to the defense of “healthcare is the responsibility of the Provinces.” However, going back to frustrated team members talking to the coach, the buck stops at the top. When a team does bad, the manager answers the bell. If the team is REALLY bad, they usually get fired.

If our leader can’t get things done, then why do we need him?

Why do we need the federation?? We were told that we had all these vaccines secured and plans were in place, however, we are learning, as has been the case with many things, there are more wishes and hope than actual plans.

It’s pretty simple. There has been ample time. Things got crazy in March. Many other countries got serious about this virus earlier. Even from March, it’s been 10 months. That’s enough time to prepare to be a new parent (unless you’re an elephant). It’s incomprehensible how unprepared our government is and how they are failing us. Every day there are questions about why there are not more needles in arms. Healthcare professionals are asking, scientists are asking, and we, the citizens of Canada are asking.

If you look at the COVID-19 Tracker Canada, (https:// covid19tracker.ca/vaccinationtracker.html) you can view the rate per 1,000 people that provinces are vaccinating their citizens.

Ontario is currently at 768 doses per 100k people. Alberta is at 1,016 doses per 100k people and the leader in Canada, PEI is at 2,254 per 100k. By one estimate, at the current rate that Ontario is vaccinating, the entire population will be vaccinated in around eight years. Doing my own calculations, and current numbers as of Sunday, I calculate 1,477 days, IF they vaccinate seven days per week (including Christmas & New Year’s). At this rate, we will give them a generous four years. NOT effective by anyone’s standards.

On 14 December 2020, the first person in Canada received a COVID-19 vaccine approved for general use. Another interesting resource is the Omni Calculator. https://www.omnicalculator.com/health/vaccine-queue-ca. The calculator tries to estimate when you might get vaccinated based on some assumptions, your age, and other factors you input.

Here are my results: Using these vaccination rates and uptake of 70.3 percent, you should expect to receive your two doses of vaccine and be fully protected by between mid-July 2021 and early September 2021. I’ll keep that in mind.

Last week I pointed out how effective Israel has been in vaccinating its population. A week ago Sunday they announced that they had surpassed 1 MILLION vaccinations (in 13 days) and at that time had 10 percent of their population vaccinated.

As of THIS Sunday (a week later), Canada has reached 319,938 doses administered with 58.7 percent of our available doses administered and less than 1 percent of our population having received at least one dose.

If that’s not enough to upset you, last Tuesday CTV broke a story informing us that the Trudeau Liberals have established a questionable priority list for vaccinations. In this hierarchy, some inmates (including mass murderers) will get a vaccine before many nursing home residents, front-line workers, and adults in Indigenous communities who are classified as higher risk. Reminder: The Liberals restored voting for people in incarceration, so perhaps they are playing politics for votes at the expense of productive citizens.

There are now MANY examples of how to deal with COVID. From prevention and control to deploying of Vaccines. There is no need to re-engineer the wheel. All the hard work has been done. All our PM and his team need to do is connect the dots and copy what others have done. They may need to pick up a phone and ask a few questions (gasp), but what they are doing now is severely lacking.

PM Trudeau. Your bosses are frustrated and troubled by your so-called plans. Time to get something done. Do the job we are paying you for. If you can’t handle it, step aside for someone who can.

Elk Island Catholic Schools to pay additional $800,000 for COVID-19 Supports Michelle Pinon News Advertiser Elk Island Catholic Schools, (EICS) is going to have to pay an additional $800,000 for COVID-19 supports.

But that is a far cry from the total amount of money it would have had to pay for COVID-19 supports if it hadn’t received $2.5 million from the federal government.

EICS Chair Ted Paszek explained, “Most of the additional learning supports, especially from the federal funding, went to hiring 18 teachers because eight percent of our students opted for online learning in September. That was through St. Isadore which is our online learning centre so that’s why the federal money was such a godsend.

Instead of having to pull money out of the schools to put staff into the virtual

learning centre we left the funding in place and then we were able to hire 18 more teachers to work with the online students so it didn’t impact the classrooms. If we had to impact the classrooms you can imagine we’d have to be combining grades and reducing the number of students that went online.

That funding enabled us to keep the classroom configurations as they were.”

Paszek said a fair portion of the federal money was set aside for substitute costs. He said when there’s a covid case in a school then a student goes home for 14 days.

Additionally, the teacher, other teachers, or support staff that were in contact with the student would have to isolate. “In one episode there was six staff that had to go home and isolate, and subs had to be brought in. So you can see how that starts to add up.”

EICS also saved some money, explained Paszek, because there are less travel and professional development. They also found savings in a few other places to help offset the costs.

“We reallocated the money from within to be used for these purposes. We weren’t able to use our reserves because they are pretty small.”

Paszek also pointed out the Provincial Government did supply personal protective equipment, sanitizing equipment, and other materials for the school division. “We should have enough but it’s such an unpredictable virus, but so

far we’re on target and should be able to manage till the end of the year.”

At the November 25 public meeting, Chief Financial Officer and SecretaryTreasurer Cindy Wang provided a report to the Board of Trustees of the EICS submission to Alberta Education highlighting the Federal Funding for Alberta for a Safe Return to Class Fund.

The report stated, “In September EICS received $1,175,000 and will be receiving another $1,175,000 in January 2021. The total allocation of highlights of the expenditures allocated to the federal funding include: Additional Learning Supports: $2,588,288 Testing (Temp checks/Swab Tests) $55,000 Cleaning Supplies and Sanitization $80,000 Additional Cleaning and Custodial (substitutes) $284,020 Online Learning/Teacher Training $137,000 Transportation Cleaning $35,229 Total expenditures: $3,179,537.”

Elk Island Catholic Schools (EICS), part of Alberta’s publicly-funded education system, serves over 7,300 students in 18 schools in the communities of Camrose, Fort Saskatchewan, Sherwood Park, Strathcona County, and Vegreville.

Miss Delia Olyan of Vegreville received a cheque from the Edmonton Bulletin which was her prize in the Bulletin’s “Safety First Essay” competition. Miss Delia must be one mean writer as she entered into competition with students from all grades.

The prompt investigation by our Fire Chief in Willingdon, of a blaze in Mr. Kryskow’s building saved the west half of the town from destruction.

Mr. Winnick of the CPR staff in Willingdon has been transferred to Sedgewick. The fire brigade and hockey enthusiasts will certainly miss him.

The keen eye of Constable Winnick effected the capture of both bandits who successfully held up the bank at Myrnam but could not evade the law.

Miss Mahaskiw, who was teaching the senior room at Leszniw, has left for the school at Greenbush. One teacher will handle the whole school during winter.

Miss Miller, who was with the Nu-Way Stores at Strome, has accepted a position with the branch here in Innisfree, assisting the manager, Mr. Lindahl.

One farmer from Andrew recently shipped a car of oats containing some two Thousand bushels. He received his cheque this week which netted him s little better than 12 cents per bushel.

Prime Minister W.L. Mackenzie King has announced that Castle Mountain, a 9,400 ft. peak in the Rockies, has been renamed Mt. Eisenhower in honor of the leader of the Allied forces in Europe.

Removal of tire rationing and distribution restrictions does not affect the prices of new or used tires for cars or trucks, the Price Board reminds. “The same schedule of prices at which tires could be sold during the fall of 1941 is the authorized maximum today.”

Jacob Olinyk has sold his business in Two Hills to Mr. R. Dowhaniuk.

A Toronto manufacturer said that by late spring or early summer Canadians will be able to buy socks that are permanently unshrinkable, and that by September baby clothes, sweaters, fabrics and had knitting yarns made from unshrinkable wool will be available.

Temperatures continue to hover around 20 – 30 below following a heavy snow storm that plugged Vegreville Streets last Thursday.

Snow banks 4 feet deep are common place both in town and in the country as the winter of 1970-71 goes down in history as “one to remember”.

Winner of the baby contest at St. Joseph’s General Hospital, Vegreville arrived on the scene on January 7th, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Austin of Ranfurly.

Two citizens have publicly announced that they will seek the nomination as Social Credit candidate in the next provincial elections in the Vegreville Constituency. Alex W. Gordey, present sitting member for Vegreville will look to be re-nominated while Nick Yakimyshyn is campaigning now for the position.

John Chomik, formerly of Vegreville has taken up residence at Lloydminster and assumed the operation of the Prince Charles Motel Hotel.

A poster drawn by David Luhoway which was judged first in the Rotary sponsored contest last fall in Vegreville won first prize at the Rotary District level and is now entered in the Rotary International contest.

Sally Wilson, coordinator of the county Adult Learning Council, told Vegreville Town Council that a $30,000 grant had been received from the federal government to expand access to the internet.

Keith Williams resigned as director of Vegreville Family and Community Support Services. In a letter to Vegreville town council, Williams said “it is time to move on.” He served as director for 5 ½ years.

Angela Charlie Marie Kutz received a Sparks t-shirt from current members of the Girl Guides movement. Present at the presentation were Elizabeth Jones (Sparks) Erin Giebelhaus (Brownie), Tawnya Chomiak (Pathfinder), Katie Wilson (Ranger) and Candice Clark (Guide). Baby Angela was the first baby girl born in Vegreville in 1996 and is the daughter of Robin Mackney.

A shipment of clothing and equipment weighing 3551.3 kilograms or 3.5 tonnes was sent to the Ukraine, through the efforts of the Beauvallon Adventist Community Services Society.

Randy Bourassa, along with Elsie Choban and Anne Plaska of the Lakeland Breakers in Two Hills updated council on the Jaws of Life purchase. A basic jaws of life has been purchased and training has begun for people attending emergency calls in the area.

The Plague of Justinian hit the Mediterranean area in the 500s, not only killing millions but crucially weakening the Byzantine Empire and helping ruin its plans to reconquer western Europe from the barbarians.

The Black Death of the 1300s wiped out over 100 million people in Europe and Asia. It sped the decline of the feudal system, engendered persecution of Jews, lepers, and gypsies, and created a better economic life for the peasantry whose labour was now much more valuable.

The Spanish flu of 1918-20 and its 50 million deaths helped the Allies defeat Germany in the First World War, increased government intervention in public health, and spurred the eugenics movement and the drive to rid society of its weakest members.

Now that the development of vaccines has made it possible to dream of a world free from the threat of the COVID-19 epidemic, what consequences of this plague can we look forward to?

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has told the United Nations that the global epidemic has “provided an opportunity for a reset.” He said, “This is our chance to accelerate our pre-pandemic efforts to reimagine economic systems that actually address global challenges like extreme poverty, inequality, and climate change.”

The connection between the COVID-19 virus and reshaping capitalism, international trade, and carbon emissions may seem imaginary to you at the moment.

But you may be sure that it will involve tax increases, an attack on the Prairie economy, and more blather about Canada being a “post-national state” with no core identity.

This attitude amongst the elites will clash with growing public disenchantment with the globalism that made a pandemic possible.

We can also look forward to a continued shift to working at home with challenging consequences for businesses in downtown areas, public transit, property owners, and airlines.

Unions will certainly press for the frontline workers who kept civilization afloat to be suitably rewarded with wage increases.

A population that has been forced to socially distance, wear masks, and deplete the world’s supply of hand sanitizer will need time to get comfortable with close physical contact again. We may see the elbow-bump maintain its popularity as a polite form of greeting.

Conflicting official pronouncements, disinformation, and conspiracy theories all fought for space in our brains this year, leading to an erosion in the public’s trust in expert advice, a social deficit that will have to be made up somehow.

In the wake of the pandemic, we must reconsider how we warehouse the elderly and how they can be made both physically secure and emotionally supported when the next emergency arrives.

Preparation for the next pandemic must start now; never again should Canada be caught short in personal protective equipment or scramble for plans to deal with a national crisis. We must study the lessons of 2020 to be certain of which were the most effective responses.

Did lockdowns work? Were masks really helpful and, if so, what kind? Did the early focus on “flattening the curve” cause more medical distress by diverting health care resources? What was the cost of battling COVID-19 in terms of damage to mental health and increased mortality of untreated medical issues?

As we await the widespread application of vaccines, be patient, and keep safe.

Lily Homeniuk Club Reporter This month the club met virtually to discuss our steer raffle, public speaking, and the new COVID-19 regulations. Our returning club members turned in their diary from the previous year and all members were able to pick up new record books and raffle tickets to see in the coming months.

Our club was fortunate enough to be able to work in small groups with the Christmas Bureau of Vegreville to help sort and pack gifts for children and youth in the community.

Club members’ hand-made cards were delivered to the seniors at

Homestead Senior Citizens Lodge in hopes of spreading some much need holiday cheer.

LoneSpruce Ag Inc. has filed application BA20009 with the Natural Resources Conservation Board (NRCB) to obtain an approval to expand an existing confined feeding operation (CFO) on the E½ 16-53-11 W4M in the County of Two Hills of Alberta. The application is to expand to 4,200 beef finishers and permit the use of existing pens.

The estimated total cost of the aforesaid project is $10,750,000.00. The total amount to be borrowed on the credit and security of the Town of Vegreville at large by the issue of debentures is $2,500,000.00. The Town of Vegreville will repay the indebtedness over a period of thirty (30) years in semi-annual or annual instalments, with interest not exceeding eight percent (8%), or in the interest rate fixed from time to time by the financial institution, payable semi-annually or annually.

President’s Message Tina Warawa Submitted There is no denying that this year for any minor hockey executive and for me as a president is unlike any season faced by a group before.

As a club, we were able to start our season in September with some modified regulations. Coach and team selection took place and many teams had already begun a few exhibition games. These games required some cohorting rules and 14-day breaks between your 2-3 team cohorted groups but the tiering season was underway. This halted when the provincial regulations were put in place. While this seems like a lot of work for the association and the families, we are still so happy that we began the process. We had many parents reach out to us to tell us that having hockey even for the short time was some sense of normality for the kids. We were able to provide 2-3 ice sessions for a few months for most of the groups. Team pictures did not happen due to the timing of the shutdown, but the kids still had time to bond and create a few memories. I can say that I am more convinced about the importance of the sport now more than ever before. I see it by the fact that the kids were so happy to come, they were willing to accept additional rules just to be able to play and now every time I go uptown, I see so many of those kids on the outdoor skating surfaces. As an association, I want to thank the Town of Vegreville for their hard work to provide additional outdoor spaces for residents of all ages to still have access to ice.

Canada is, of course, a hockey country but that is even more true I believe in rural communities and Vegreville is no exception. There is a long history of hockey in senior, junior, minor, and other recreation leagues. These levels of hockey have been supported by the residents, the town, and the businesses and it has created a strong sense of community. Many non-for-profit groups have donated over the years to allow us to keep fees lower than in most communities which makes the sport more accessible. Groups like KidSport and many others have done their part to keep players on the ice.

oned with which can be seen by the many league, division, and provincial banners hanging from the rafters in the arena which is now known to us as the Wally Fedun arena. The arena was renamed after a donation was made by the Fedun family to honour Wally who was a long-time minor hockey coach, manager, league director, and president of the association. The fact that the family spoke of how happy this would make him and how the arena was like a second home, is another affirmation of the positive impacts of the sport.

The words, “a second home”, is the very reason why I am so proud to be the president of Vegreville and District Minor Hockey. I feel blessed by the memories and support being part of minor hockey has given my two sons and I. Their late father was crazy about the sport and I sort of jumped in headfirst after he passed to try to keep the kids involved. Our years of minor hockey have provided a sense of discipline for the kids, for my sons it was also additional male role models, over a dozen extra sets of parental eyes, best friends, a sense of belonging, and of course physical fitness. As a newcomer to the community, the arena was truly our second home and I am grateful to the families we have met. As president, I would say that I am very fortunate to have executive members that care very deeply for the health and wellbeing of all the players and have provided me an amazing amount of support over the year.

As to what the rest of the season will look like, the reality is we do not know yet.

I have had many meetings with members of our league and Hockey Alberta and we have had discussions on what a season could be, and many options have been put on the table including a possible extension to the season. We will be waiting for updates and will share those with our association as soon as we have them. I love the smell of the ice and the sounds of the players and I will be happy to walk through the doors of the arena again regardless if we can do that this season or when it is possible in the future.

On Dec. 13 the Government of Alberta announced the temporary closure of all indoor recreation facilities, including arenas. There was no definitive end date to these measures, although the government did indicate that the new public health order would be in effect for a minimum of four weeks.

Michelle Pinon News Advertiser There’s always a silver lining, and for Team Canada it was a silver medal at the World Junior Championship that wrapped up on January 5.

Fans were able to watch the top ten ranked hockey nations in the world and the top prospects destined for teams in the National Hockey League (NHL). The NHL’s 2020-21 season, is just getting underway this week and is slated to run until May 8. Thirty of the league’s 31 teams will be playing in the regular-season schedule that will consist of 868 games.

This year the teams have been divided into four divisions: north, west, central, and east. The north division marks a return to the NHL’s rivalry roots when the league included only Canadian teams in its first seven seasons from 1917-18 to 1923-1924.

The top four teams in each division will qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs with intra-divisional play in the first two rounds. The four teams that advance to the semi-final round will be seeded by their regular-season points

Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League of Canada Mundare Branch Celebrates its 75th Anniversary Sylvia Zacharkiw Submitted On December 6 the Mundare Branch of the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League celebrated their 75th anniversary with a special divine liturgy at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Mundare.

Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, only a handful of women were able to participate.

The Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League of Canada, (UCWLC) was established to unite and organize women of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada in order to carry out the main aims of the UCWLC; to promote the Catholic faith, Ukrainian culture, Canadian citizenship, and charitable activities.

The Mundare Branch was founded on December 4, 1945, amongst one of the first in the province. A total of 38 ladies joined that year. President was Irene Ferbey, Secretary was Ann Sheptycki, and Treasurer was Jennie Ostolosky.

The ladies were active in the community, supporting the museum, teaching “Ridna Shkola” (Ukrainian School) and offering lessons in Ukrainian crafts, canvassing for worthwhile causes, fundraising through various means, and catering, catering, catering.

Over the years membership of the club has fluctuated, with almost 60 members in the 1940s. In 2020, we had 30 members. A total of 173 members on the roll have since passed on.

Our branch has always committed itself to community endeavours, contributing funds for worthwhile projects, such as recent donations to a handi-van and a new 20 passenger bus for Mary Immaculate Care Centre. We also regularly visit the residents of Father Filas Manor with birthday cakes.

Our main focus, however, is on involvement in the Sts. Peter and Paul Church and parish: celebrating League Day in May, recognizing first communicants, honouring mothers and fathers on their respective days, and hosting potluck dinners. Annually we plant flowers in the Grotto and several members donate time during the summer to pruning and weed control. We are especially proud of our donation to the flooring project of the Church. The total budget was close to $60,000 and all the funds were donated by parishioners and organizations. Our branch was able to provide a little over $9,000 to this endeavour.

Funds for our projects come mainly from our perogy work bees and sales which we hold in the spring and fall.

Some of our members have worked bingos for the Ukrainian Brotherhood.

In the past we also participated in the town-wide garage sale in May, selling odds and ends and baked goods. Some members wrote pysanky and the funds generated from their sale went to the floor project. Unfortunately, due to the current pandemic, all activities have been suspended for the short term.

Originally the intent was to host a celebration on League Day in May of 2020, with a Divine Liturgy and banquet in honour of the organization.

Unfortunately, pandemic conditions put a quick end to that idea. Instead, it was decided to dedicate a Divine Liturgy on December 6, as close to our anniversary date as we can get, to the ladies of the UCWLC, Mundare Branch. This Liturgy is in recognition of all that the club has accomplished during its tenure and pays homage to all the members, past and present, those still active, those who were once members and moved away, or decided to terminate their membership for personal reasons, and to those members who have passed on. The latter members are acknowledged on a plaque located in the vestibule of the church.

Congratulations. May the ladies of the UCWLC continue to be an integral part of their church and secular community.

Election Candidates can now file Nomination Papers Michelle Pinon News Advertiser Anyone interested in running for municipal council or school board can now file their nomination papers.

It is one of several changes to the Local Authorities Election Act, (LAEA), that have been made and will apply going into the municipal general election on Oct. 18, 2021 Rather than nominations being restricted to a period of two hours, four weeks prior to election day, nomination papers are now accepted by a jurisdiction at the beginning of the campaign period. In this case, the campaign period officially began on January 1, 2021. As well, a person who filed nomination papers may withdraw at any time within 24 hours after the close of the nomination period.

Nominees need five people to sign the form. The filing cost is $100 which is refundable if they are elected, or not elected but receives at least 50 percent of the votes of the winner.

Grounds for ineligibility for nomination include: • if you are the auditor of the municipality; • if your property taxes are more than $50 in arrears (excluding indebtedness on current taxes, and indebtedness for arrears of taxes for which the person has entered into a consolidation agreement with the municipality); • if you are in default for any other debt to the municipality in excess of $500 for more than 90 days; or • if within the previous 10 years you have been convicted of an offense under the Local Authorities Election Act, the Election Act, Election Finances and Contributions Disclosure Act, or the Canada Elections Act. If you are a judge, Member of the Senate or House of Commons of Canada, or Member of the Legislative Assembly, you must resign that position before you take office as a member of a municipal council.

Self-funded candidates are not required to open a bank account.

Candidates are not permitted to carry a deficit and deficits must be eliminated within 60 days of filing campaign disclosure statements. Additionally, it is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure that money in the campaign account shall only be used for the payment of the campaign.

Not everyone is fortunate enough to have perfect eyesight. "Lazy Eye", medically known as Amblyopia, affects approximately 3 out of every 100 children. It is a medical condition where the brain and one of the eyes do not properly work together, often caused by an imbalance in the positioning of the two eyes. If discovered as a child, the condition is often treatable with eye exercises that make the child favor the weaker eye. However, if untreated into adulthood, the therapy tends to be less successful.

My first job out of college was for a company that transcribes audiotapes into brail for blind people. Since the previous supervisor was retiring after 16 years in the position, he graciously offered to stay on for a few weeks to help me get settled. However, unlike myself, the retiring supervisor was blind.

After a few days of working side by side, I was feeling very overwhelmed with all the responsibilities. One day while we were having lunch together, I told my predecessor that I was feeling stressed about the job.

"I'm just not sure I can keep up with everything," I explained.

"There's no need to worry," my blind comrade encouraged.

"In a few weeks you'll be doing this job with your eyes closed.

The Next Step Team and the Volunteer Biologists Group have indicated that Minister Jason Nixon made some useful changes in the 2019-20 regulations that provided increased opportunities for anglers. In the coming year, the following recommendations and suggestions were discussed that would further increase angling opportunities and would further simplify the regulations.

Simplify Sportfishing Regulations with the following changes: • One Northern pike slot-size 55cm to 63cm daily catch limit for all lakes (with a few exceptions for research or other specific management reasons).

• One Walleye slot-size 40cm to 50cm daily catch limit for all lakes (with a few exceptions for research or other specific management reasons).

• Specific waters such as Wabamun, Kehewin, Touchwood, Beaver, Heart, Piche, Logan, North

Saskatchewan River, Pinehurst, Winefred, Lac La Biche, Wolf, Narrow, Barnes and several pike fisheries that have zero harvest limits and several walleye fisheries that have zero harvest limits should allow limited daily harvests based upon slot-sizes.

This input was in line with the Minister’s expectations for improved dialogue amongst the public interests and the resource managers. Feedback and accountability to the public were identified as key expectations. The Minister has indicated that increased fishing opportunities would be desirable and expected with more changes to come.

The data being gathered by the government appears to echo the observation of many anglers yet positions on regulations at times differ. Many catch and release pike and walleye fisheries have no apparent on-going or scheduled assessments. Many of these waters sustain very little use and could provide increased fishing opportunities with suggested simplified regulations.

Expanding the number of lakes that allow a sustainable harvest would spread the present pressure on specific lakes that are currently open to harvest.

Increasing fishing opportunities by improving public access, by protecting and developing fish habitats, and by conducting transplanting and stocking fish in specific lakes was supported by the Minister. The Minister supports improved communications amongst the public interests and the government to seek increased fishing opportunities.

The groups were pleased by the actions of the Minister and staff this past year to create new fishing opportunities. The groups remain optimistic further increases in fishing opportunities are possible, especially if more emphasis is placed on developing and restoring fish habitats and regulating with low-risk harvesting options.

Link-In Calls Provide Connecting and Learning Michelle Pinon News Advertiser Finding hope can be difficult at the best of times, but during COVID times it can be vital.

Finding Hope is also the name of a recent zoom audio presentation throughout the Seniors’ Link-In Calls program which is offered through the Town of Vegreville’s Family & Community Support Services, (FCSS) department.

Lisa Topilko, Community Programmer for Seniors and Adults with FCSS, said the topic was timely and contained a lot of useful and practical information for seniors. The presentation was made possible through Hope Studies Central, a program which is offered through the University of Alberta.

Psychologist Wendy Edey posed the question: How can I look to the future and be hopeful at the same time? Part of her message was to ask participants to decide what to hope for, discover how it feels to be hopeful, how to express hope, how to look for symbols of hope and to do acts of hope.

“Hoping is an active process. Keep finding new things to hope for,” stated Edey. She talked about the book Commanding Hope about one mom in the US who had no power or influence but decided to use hope to put an end to the testing of nuclear bombs in that country.

Edey said using “audacious hope” she gathered groups that led to fundamental change and the signing of treaties in countries all over the world. She encouraged participants to do the same in their lives. Participants were given the opportunity at the end of the presentation to ask questions and comment.

Topilko said they began the Seniors’ Link-In program in September. The

program was made possible through the federal government’s New Horizons Grant. Currently, they have 30 participants. Anyone over the age of 55 can participate in the free program.

“I’m always looking for ideas from seniors and what topics they’re interested in; what kinds of speakers should I book for next month, and one of the things I’d like to try and get going is a gratitude group so they can have the chance on the phone to meet each other and talk together about what they’re grateful for. That’s one of the ways to address some mental health issues, to focus on what we have, and what we’re grateful for, and to hear about other people’s blessings as well.”

Overall, seniors are reporting they look forward to having something to do, and doing something different, which allows them to learn and connect safely at the same time, added Topilko.

“Our numbers are increasing. Every week we are having new people signing up and they get to pick and choose what kind of sessions they want to participate in. We try to have any of the materials a presenter wants them to see available to them. That comes in the mail or is delivered by volunteers with the Friendly Faces Delivery Program. We set this up at the beginning of Covid so organizations could get program materials to their participants. One of the reasons was to reduce the number of people out in the community doing their errands.

We use Zoom audio technology. A person needs only a regular telephone in order to participate. You don’t need the internet. You don’t need any fancy device. You don’t need a smartphone. There are a number of telephone numbers to dial to get into our program, and there are some seniors

who saying that’s a lot of numbers, I can’t dial all those numbers, so what I do and my co-workers, is we will phone them in and we can telephone them and they will accept the call, and they can hear the voices of their

friends on the line. We’ve had 15 to 18 people on a call. Sometimes we’re singing together. Sometimes we’re listening to short stories. But more often we are listening to a professional giving us some information.”

Terry Kubin said COVID-19 has taught her patience. “I don’t scream that I have to get out of my house; I actually like staying in my house. I don’t get lonely because I have my husband and my cat. Then I can contact my family online or by telephone. But my life is much slower now because I can’t go outside anymore; I can’t even go into the yard as I fall into the high-risk category if I caught COVID-19. We are very cautious about where we go and what we do now. In 2021, my husband and I hope to have a holiday and go to the Bahamas because we always used to go there for a vacation. If we are out of the danger zone, we might consider going,” Terry said.

Fond Memories of Ukrainian Christmas Eve Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk MLA Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville Happy New Year and Happy Ukrainian Christmas!

Ukrainian Christmas Eve has always been a special day for me. As a young girl, I could hardly wait to go to Baba and Gido’s farm (which was SE of Chipman). My family and I were always early as mom was there to help prepare for the evening meal. My mom had nine brothers and sisters and with their families, there was 42 of us, first in a two-room house with no running water and a coal and wood stove, then in the later years a small, two-room bedroom bungalow.

My cousins and I would be patiently waiting for the sign of the first star so that the evening festivities could begin.

The meal started with Kutia (cooked wheat with poppy seeds and honey), this was one of the 12 meatless dishes served.

The other dishes were the Kolach (braided bread), borsch soup (beets), pickled herring, Holubtsi (cabbage rolls), Varenyky (perogies-potato), sauerkraut, prune and the ones we would fight over wild blueberry (they were amazing), mashed garlic beans, Pidpenky gravy (mushrooms), sauer-

kraut and peas, Compote (basically boiled dried fruits – Aunt Liz always brought this), Pampushky (prune, apple and poppy seed buns and my mom always brought date squares and poppy seed cake).

After the meal, my uncles would throw wheat in the air (for good luck the following year). The rest of the evening consisted of singing, playing with my cousins, and enjoying each other’s company. I recall it always being so cold that evening, so going outside to play wasn’t an option.

Although over the years the traditions have changed, this evening will always be special to myself and my family.
