From Jan. 26, 2023, to Dec. 1, 2023, Vegreville and District Chamber of Commerce (VDCC) offered a Four Seasons Photo Contest where contestants were asked to submit a photo of the Pysanka at Elks/Kinsmen Park.

There was no limit to how many entries people could submit and they received around 40 photos. The pictures will be used for postcards and a calendar for the 50th Anniversary of the Pysanka which was constructed in 1975.

Photo contest winner Jennifer Clyne explained, “I have been doing photography since 2016. I submitted 17 photos, and I decided to enter the contest after a friend made me aware of the contest and prompted me to enter. Since I started taking photos, I used the Pysanka as a muse because I enjoy how it is the same but yet so different depending on the weather, sunrise, and sunset. I use my phone for most of my photos. Well, other times, I will use a camera, but my phone allows me to stop in an instant and take a snapshot when something catches my eye.

What drew me into taking photos was my love of landscapes, architecture, abandoned buildings, and nature.  I also enjoy sharing the beauty of Alberta with others.  It's a getaway for a few moments of silence in a world that's so hectic.

My technique is honestly to walk in a downpour to catch raindrops on twigs, lay in a snow bank so the light bounces off an object, never be afraid of a mud puddle just to catch a rainbow, and of course always go out on the coldest of days to catch the beauty of Canadian weather.”

After this, the Passport Winner Mary Ellen Smiley commented that this was the first significant thing she ever won. “It was pretty awesome and exciting to find out I won. I am looking forward to participating next year.”

The VDCC Passport for Christmas Contest was also held from Nov. 24, 2023, to Dec. 31, 2023. Participants had their passport stamped when they shopped at participating businesses. A total of 1,100 passports were received and $250,000 was spent in local businesses as a result of this contest.

Winner of the top four prizes in the photo contest was Jennifer Clyne, left, who received $500 in Chamber Bucks from General Manager for VDCC Roxane Tannas on Jan. 9.
