A mosaic of ideas
Sample images of the work produced by St. Albert-based artist Lewis Lavoie, who will be guiding a Mural Mosaic project through to completion this spring and summer in Vegreville. A series of 1,500 tiles will be painted by local school children and arranged in a specific manner to create a larger image similar in style to these examples shown. The Vegreville Cultural Association Fine Arts and Cultural Endowment Trust is working with the public at present to take ideas for the main theme of the image which will be kept secret until the unveiling. (Images supplied)
Michael Simpson Editor Vegreville’s opportunity to express itself through art for the world to see has arrived. Over the past year a committee has been working quietly to bring together funding and support for a collaborative mural mosaic which has reached the go-ahead stage in recent weeks. VCHS Principal Jeff Hollinshead, one of the key organizers in
the committee, said people are talking. “Excitement is building,” Hollinshead said. “We waited to announce to staff until everything was more official because it’s been more of a work in progress up to this point.” The committee, formally known as the Vegreville Cultural Association Fine Arts and Cultural Endowment Trust, is actively seeking input from
the public on the main theme of the mural, which will be comprised of 1,500 individually painted tiles, the artwork supplied by children from both public and catholic schools within Vegreville as well as the Next Step Outreach school. Idea submissions can be sent in a written or picture form via email, Facebook, CONTINUED TO PAGE 10

VCHS basketball updates VCHS Coaches The Sr. Boys basketball team travelled to Lacombe on January 9-10, 2015 to play in the Central Alberta Christian High School tournament. After losing their first game against an unde-
feated Prairie Christian Academy 84-59, VCHS rebounded in the consolation semifinal to defeat host CACHS 5742, and won the consolation final 66-48 over Pigeon Lake Regional School. Their two wins
leave VCHS with a record of 4 wins and 3 losses so far this year. (Bryan Worobec/ Sr. Boys Basketball Coach) This weekend in Lacombe was one of missing players, we had 3 key players gone from the tournament, and then during the tournament 3 players became injured. One was taken to the hospi-
tal in the ambulance but then later released. Due to these circumstances the girls played hard, but did not get a win at all this weekend. In practice this week we will review, recover, and start new. on the weekend of January 9-10. With a steep learning curve from the first game against Mundare, to some serious basketball play against Lake Land Ridge, Fort Christian and Andrew. The girls had some great triumphs and a nail biting game in the quarter finals. All girls played really hard and we left with our heads held high. Great job on the early season tournament, and keep playing hard girls. Look forward to an exciting season with more great basketball to come. (Fran Serna & Laura Sturrock/Jr. B Girls Basketball Coaches) The Junior A Girls Basketball team had a very successful tournament in
Vermillion this past weekend. The girls won their first 2 games against some stiff competition to advance to the finals. The girls lost to a very strong Vermillion team to take home second place in the tournament. Great work girls! (Tyler Van Berkel/Jr. A Girls Basketball Coach) The Junior B Boys were very successful this past weekend placing FIRST in the Elk Island Tournament. The boys lost a tough first game to Mundare but came together to win their remaining games showing true teamwork along the way. Good job boys! (Terry Kit/Jr. B Boys Basketball Coach)

or in person at the Vegreville Aquatic and Fitness Center. Submissions will be taken until February 15, and simultaneously any donations to help the project close the remaining gap on funding will be taken as well. To date, the total estimated cost of the project is between $15-17,000 and the group is halfway there with just under $9K confirmed. Hollinshead said a grant is in the final stages of being applied for, but there may be a calling for the final few thousand to be supplied from the community.
The mosaic will be fixed to the north wall of the Alberta Treasury Branch along Highway 16A downtown. Hollinshead said ATB was very quick to get the appropriate permissions to be involved in the project as the site of choice when they were approached by the committee. During the middle of March, once the theme has been finalized, tiles will be brought to the schools for children to decorate. Each child will be given a numbered tile with a corresponding set of warm or cool colours to paint a pic-

ture to their liking. Hollinshead explained that should they lack in ideas, the students will have access to the list of theme submissions and are welcome to take their cues from there. To submit an idea for the main theme, residents can look online for the website, www.muralmosaic.com, or on Facebook www.facebook.com/VegMural2015, or on Twitter at #vegmural2015. Any individuals or businesses that wish to take a sponsoring role and donate to the project can do so at
the Town’s main office downtown where a tax receipt will be issued. “I want to congratulate all for the obvious co-operation being developed to make this project a go,” said Trust Fund Chairman Orest Olineck. “I have full and complete trust this will be a highlight of how the Endowment Trust Fund can contribute to student activity that will result in a lasting memorial to the Town of Vegreville.” As for Hollinshead, who’s been with the idea since the beginning, he said it’s been terrific to work across divisional boundaries with Principals from the other
schools in town. Other partners have included the Town of Vegreville, the County of Minburn, the Vegreville Visual Artists and local businesses such as Wilde & Company and ATB. Mural Mosaic is a process pioneered by St. Albertbased artist Lewis Lavoie. He takes the individual paintings and arranges them in a specific manner to craft a larger image. Lavoie’s first work was created in 1997 on a retaining wall beside the art gallery in St. Albert. Hollinshead has had the pleasure of working with Lavoie in previous functions and said
it’s an incredible experience to work with him, as is it to be involved in the mosaic in principle. “I like community projects,” he said. “I’ve done these sort of projects in La Crete, in Fort Saskatchewan; it’s nice to connect with the community. As schools, we’re happy to support our community in any way we can – in this case we’re showcasing the work of our children. They’re all very excited to see the mural happen.” The final unveiling is expected to happen in the late spring/early summer.

Andrew students put on Christmas play Andrew School Submitted The gymnasium was filled with excited parents, grandparents, siblings, community members, and more. They all came for the annual Andrew School Christmas Concert held on Wednesday, December 17th. Directed by Mrs. Christensen and conducted by Miss Sanderson, students from Andrew Playschool, Kindergarten, and Grades 112 took part in the production
of Dear Santa. The musical told the tale of an exhausted mom who is ready for an island vacation, a dad who is tired of receiving ties for Christmas, a little brother who wants a puppy, and grandma & grandpa who want to try out a fancy new dance revolution machine. Little sister’s letter to Santa reminds every one of the true meaning of Christmas. Santa arrived just as the musical concluded with treats for all the good little boys & girls.

Mundare School Submitted Our Girls played some fabulous games of ball this year and brought home the BRONZE! Coaches Matt
McGregor and Stacey Large were proud of the great effort the girls put in and the excellent sportsmanship they showed throughout! Coach Angela Sonnenberg was faced with a mighty task of whipping her energetic bunch of boys into cohesive team, but she saw the diamonds in the rough and
using lots of (practice) time and pressure, the boys responded by giving 110% and the result was a fantastic season which culminated in gold medals for Mundare. We are proud of all our Volleyball Dragons and can’t wait to ROOOAAAR on to the courts during Basketball season this January!

The Andrew Municipal Public Library graciously donated the funds and arranged for Andrew School to experience this traditional Canadian and French Canadian culture through song, dance, stories, and hands-on activities. Students from grade 1 to grade12 participated along with the Andrew Playschool class. Les Bûcherons treated school staff to several baked meat pies called tourtiéres and every student took home an assembled dancing man courtesy of the Library Board. “This was a cultural experience that will never be forgotten! We are so grateful for the kindness and generosity of the Andrew Municipal Public Library”, stated Daniel Verhoeff principal of Andrew School.

MEMORIAM
STUMBO, Noreen July 17, 1953 – January 19, 2013 Little did we know that morning God was calling your name. In life we loved you dearly in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide. And though we cannot see you, you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again. Missed by your family, Barry, Ashley, Matt, Adria and Susan
PALICHUK, Mary In loving memory of our dear Mother, Baba & Baba Baba who passed away January 20, 2014. A loving mother, so gentle and kind, What a wonderful memory she left behind. Sadly missed and forever remembered by her family Dianne and Ernie; and Lorraine; Kim and Mike; Mel and Darren; Shandelle and Nathan; Wendi and Sheldon; Kiera, Nolan, Kiersten and Reiss

A cluster of beautiful memories Sprayed with a million tears Wishing God had spared you But a few more years. Thanks for the years you gave us And the happy times we’ve shared, We only pray that when you left us You knew how much we cared. LUTIC, Byron Daniel In loving memory of Bryon Daniel Lutic Oct. 19, 1969 – Jan. 24, 2012 If anyone looked in our hearts Only pieces they would see And I know that for all time That’s the way it’s going to be For since the day we lost you Out hearts were broke from pain And I know it will stay that way Till were together once again. In our hearts Forever: Wife Joleen, Sons Andrew & Nicholas, Parents: Andy & Katherine Lutic; Sister Sally (Brad), Brother Randy (Shoko), Mother & Father In Law: George & Shirley Dubitz and family
KLYMOCHKO In loving memory of Mike and Pauline Klymochko Dad – January 19, 1996 Mom – July 7, 1999 Our lives go on without you And nothing is the same, We try to hide our heartache When someone speaks your name. Sad are the hearts that loved you, Silent the tears that fall. Living our lives without you Is the hardest part of all. You did so many things for us, Your hearts always kind and true, And when we needed someone most, We could always count on you. The special years will not return When we were all together, But with the love within our hearts, You will walk with us forever. Lord, put your arms around them Keep them in your loving care And save a place for us beside them Until we meet them there. Deeply missed and forever loved, Your memory cherished Until we meet again in Paradise. Lovingly remembered and sadly missed by your family

VVA introduces Vivian Annell VVA Submitted When Vivian Annell is asked when she started getting interested in drawing, she replies, “As soon as I could hold a pencil I was scribbling my own little masterpieces”. As she grew older, she would spend timeless hours drawing from her own imagination or from photos of babies or children found in magazines. Vivian has a special bond with her mother when it came to art, as her mother was an artist as well. She appreciated her kind cri-
tiques and praise, which kept her interested in expressing herself artistically. Her mother would make her numerous sets of paper dolls. When Vivian was a little older, she was delighted by drawing the dolls and the wardrobes herself. Annell had a wonderful high school teacher who also inspired her creativity. He signed her final year book “Best Wishes to a girl who will continue in art.” In her teens, she began to appreciate the unique work of varied artists. She especially admired Dorothy Oxborough’s pastels of native children. She loved her style and practiced doing pastel portraits herself. After years of working in the drafting field, Vivian decided to take up her first real love- Art. She enrolled at Grant MacEwan College. After graduating from the Graphic Arts course, she continued her education at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary where she enjoyed the atmosphere which allowed her creative blood to flow. Following her college experience, Vivian worked in the advertising field but couldn’t
ignore the call to express her creativity more frequently. She felt the career consisted of too much paste up, although she did enjoy designing logos. Vivian currently works out of a studio set up in her home. She also teach classes and runs workshops for children, teens and adults from her home in Ryley Alberta. She finds teaching so rewarding, especially when she sees the pride and joy it brings to her students when they see their completed work. Vivian’s subject matter includes: scenes, flowers, animals and architecture, however her main focus has been people. She often catches herself drawing a speaker in her mind instead
of listening to them, appreciating how the shadows and light fall on their features. Vivian Annell has displayed her work in Edmonton, Leduc, Spruce Grove, and Camrose with the Vegreville Visual Artists and with the Studio 14 Art Association in Holden. She can be reached at 780663-3796 or by email at: vivcreativeart@gmail.com. VVA is a group of local artists supporting and promoting the visual arts in Vegreville. All interested artists are encouraged to contact mpvarga@shaw.ca for more information. The featured artist’s work can be viewed at the Centennial Public Library.
