41st Pysanka Festival breathes rich Ukrainian history Rosanne Fortier Vegreville’s 41st Pysanka Festival burst with educational opportunities that drew citizens of all ages to the Ukrainian festival on July 4, 5 and 6. The Pioneer Village held a large crowd who viewed and questioned the demonstrators and directors for this demonstrations and displays. The Blacksmith demonstrations and displays were directed by John Babcock who was a Blacksmith for 60 years where he constructed chisels, ham(left to right) Scott Quinnell, Scott Degen, Steve Hessels, Dennis Girardin, Sky Hoffos with John Babcock (seated) were the Blacksmiths who gave demonstrations that held a large following of viewers. mers, anvils, vices, tongs and everything he could create. Babcock is a poet too and he
gave out his poetry, which spoke about how life was years ago. The five other blacksmiths were Steve Hessels, Scott Quinnell, Scott Degen, Dennis Girardin and Sky Hoffos. These blacksmiths had people of all ages enthralled with their work. Sky Hoffos was the youngest of the gang and he is talented with his hands where he can do fine arts, leatherwork, blacksmithing and much more. Quinnell spoke about blacksmithing which is his biggest passion in life. “I am a Journeyman Machinist but my trade is connected with black smit hing. T his Blacksmith demonstration helps to show people the old ways of helping to get things
done on the forge. It’s the old ways of life that are making a comeback; that is part of our heritage, especially for the See Story............................ Page 2

going really well, there is so much interest in our demonstrations. A few folks spoke to me for two hours. This event is an access to knowledge for people, I even researched the internet for some of the information I didn’t know about.” Quinnell added. Babcock explained about how the distribution of his poems went. “The day is going really well. People really are enjoying my poems and they commented that it was an honour to meet me.” Babcock mentioned why blacksmithing is essential. “The most important thing about blacksmithing is it sparks the person’s mind that created it and provides something useful or interesting to the person who buys the item, even if it is an ornament. It’s something you can’t buy in the store.” Gail Trimble was in charge of the Rope-Making Demonstrations where he showed how you can make rope by using twine. Trimble described how his demonstrations went. “I came out to support the whole effort. There has been quite a bit of interest, especially for the older people who came from the farm because this brings back memories. Then I made skipping ropes for their grandchildren.” The aroma of fresh baked bread moved citizens to Stone Mill demonstrations, where Steve Orleski, with the assistance of John Litun, demonstrated old fashioned bread making. Olga Orleski helped too. Steve explained how the demonstrations went. “There has been a lot of interest in

mire, Taras continued to fight for freedom for all people and ultimately paid the final price of a hard life after he died the See Story.......................... Page 15

this stone mill. People in the pioneer days had to begin by grounding the wheat in a stone grinding mill to turn it into flour before making the bread.” Next door was bread baking with the Country Sunshine Band and Pearl Kuhn was the Director. This bread is made by putting the wood in a peeche and then the hot embers heat the bricks before it’s removed and bread is placed in to bake. The wood gives it a unique flavour, simi-
lar to a willow taste, which adds to the charm. Shevchenko remembered The Folk Arts venue in the Social Centre was the home for the theme of the 2014 Pysanka Festival, which was the 200th Anniversary Commemoration to Taras Shevchenko, Ukraine’s beloved poet, laureate, great bard and artist where there was an array of Taras’s paintings and works. Taras was born on March 9, 1814 in the
village of Moryntsi in central Ukraine. Taras was a ‘serf ‘which means he was owned by his rich landlord. Serfs would be tortured by their landlords. It was through Taras’s deter-

Smile of the
WEEK
Exhibit Hall Extra! Caroline Knowles Just recently formed the Vegreville Visual Artists will be showing their works at the Country Fair in the Exhibit Hall as an organization for the first time. Although a few individual local artists have shown their work at the fair before, this is a new organization representing many local artists. This is an exhibit only, not part of the competitive categories. The Exhibit Hall team have revised and refined the categories for the show. A relatively new category is the Gluten Free baking category. But also, “back by popular demand”, to quote Team Leader Sian Vadnais, is the “Space Alien” created from recycled materials to challenge the imagination and inspire the creative juices of recyclers and re-users. We hope to see many interesting characters in this class. Another new thing is that children will be able to enter adult categories where there is
no equivalent in the children’s section. The Hall will be open on Thursday and Friday, August 7 & 8 from noon until 9:30 pm and from noon to 6 pm on Saturday. Come and visit and admire the many works of the artists, bakers, farmers, gardeners, knitters, photographers and generally creative citizens of all ages. Even better yet submit some of your own creations and join the longstanding country fair tradition. The deadline for entry is July 17th at 4 pm. The Exhibit Hall “Entry, Prize and Rule Booklet” with entry forms is available at the Ag Society Office (call 780 632 3950 or toll free: 1888-611-0161) or on-line at: www. vegag.ca/page/exhibit-hall/. Please note there is a correction to the Booklet information: Pick-up times – Saturday August 9 from 6 – 8 pm not as noted on p.2 of the booklet.

Edna Seniuk brings sunshine to Heritage House on a rainy day

The Summer Party at Heritage House on June 18, gave everyone a chance to meet the new Interim General Manager, Fiona Farrell who has a PN diploma and taught in the nursing field. Rosanne Fortier Edna Seniuk, LPN at Heritage House, has a heart that’s as warm as sunshine on a summer day. On June 18, Edna presented a Summer Party to Heritage House residents, volunteers and staff where she bought cold cuts, cheese platters, fruits, vegetables and an array of delightful desserts and beverages for this party. She noted that she does this every year to welcome summer in. For an additional tropical flavour to the event, everyone wore leis. Then the citizens met Fiona Farrell, Interim General
diploma and she taught in the nursing field. Her professional background includes long term
care and assisted living work. Farrell’s hobbies are playing guitar, karaoke, knitting, crocheting and scrap booking. She will bring the arts to Heritage House because before she entered nursing school, she was in the Grant MacEwan Dance program. At the party, she provided the entertainment when she performed Karaoke, in a folk style that had a smooth, relaxed touch to it.

ATV Safety Course rides with successful safety learning

Rosanne Fortier Children don’t need a driver’s license to drive an ATV, yet accidents can happen and when this occurs, life is never the same again for the person involved in the accident. The Vegreville Agricultural Society hosted the second annual ATV Safety course with the assistance of Town of Vegreville Community Peace Off icers, Ken Podoborozny and Dustin Angle. Inc. were the instructors who taught the course to 40 children from five to 16 years-old on Vegreville’s Fairgrounds on June 22. Podoborozny, who has been in Vegreville for 24 years, initiated the course where he explained laws and safety instructions for riding ATVs. He said that parents must set examples by wearing a helmet, obeying the rules and they must have a driver’s plate

July 14, 2014 and insurance when riding a recreational vehicle on the road. Parents have to accompany their kids who are under 14 years-old when riding an ATV. Podoborozny said that everyone must wear a helmet and safety gear which includes proper footwear with over-ankle boots, elbow pads, chest protectors, goggles, proper long pants, longsleeve shirts, jackets and gloves. He mentioned that it’s essential to wear warm clothing during the winter months. Helmets are lifesavers. Then children must tell their parents where they will be riding their quads. No one should ever ride in their neighbor’s farm field and everyone must ask permission before riding on anyone’s land. This is the law! Danilak taught the students some pre-ride inspections, key safety and riding principles next where she emphasized that they must wear a helmet in order to protect the most vital organ of the body -the brain. The brain controls the whole body – the heart, lungs, our speech, legs and more. “There is no such thing as a brain transplant; we can’t fix our brains once we damage it.” Danilak announced. Danilak then asked a couple of kids to wear two different helmets while she explained that it’s better to wear a helmet that protects the eyes, ears and face with a lower covering to cover the lower portion of the head because the brain is enclosed in this area. Stauffer discussed riding in terrains where they have to be cautious and not ride through a fence or on rocks or water. Gophers could make holes that aren’t always noticeable or a child could fall into a dug-out. “It’s best to stay away from dug-outs and swamps because we don’t know how deep the water is and if you ever hit the water, get your helmet off fast. The reason for this is a helmet and protective clothing items are heavy, they will absorb water and the impact from being thrown off a quad makes a person weak, therefore he/she has a hard time to breathe and all of this makes it easier to drown.” Stauffer stated. The course continued with Stauffer saying that roll-overs on flatland are the number one way that kids have accidents on their quads. “It’s scary because quads weigh a lot and when they fall on a child, they get severely injured.” Stauffer mentioned. “The number one way to avoid a roll-over is to slow down because this will help you to brake or maneuver the quad around slowly if you need to.” Stauffer said. “You should always be in the rider’s stance position when riding your quad. If you’re in any danger and feel yourself falling off the quad, jump off it fast and let the quad roll away from you.” Stauffer asked five children to demonstrate how to position their legs in a rider’s stance on a quad so they can
UPCOMING EVENTS
July 14, 2014
maneuver and position their body properly. This position is where their knees are drawn outwards from the quad. Next, the kids were taught not to double on quads because this can be very dangerous. “Quads are made for one person unless it is stated otherwise.” Stauffer said. The course went on to teach what to do if an emergency happens. “You need to know two things if a person you’re with is hurt on the quad. These are if they are talking and are they aren’t able to speak, you have to run to the nearest road and seek help for this person. It’s best not to ride the quad to get help because you’re nervous and could get into another quad accident. Don’t move this person because we don’t know had badly he/she is injured and if we move him/her, we could cause a lot of damage. In these cases, always run for help. Then tell someone there is an ATV accident and call 911.” Stauffer added. Stauffer then gave the students a quiz. In the afternoon, the kids had hands-on activities in the field to practice their
safety training. Afterwards, all the children were given a helmet. Vegreville’s Agricultural Society was able to put on the course after a successful grant funding application went through process. Children were charged a fee to attend to help cover additional costs. “Our mission statement is to promote agricultural ideals, education, and entertainment for our community,” Rachel Farr, Ag Society Vice President, said. “We want to make sure kids in our community are safe and educated, particularly about ATV safety. With the help of the province through grant funding and from the Town of Vegreville through Peace Officer Ken Podoborozny we get to do just that. We are also looking at another ATV course in the fall as well as snowmobile safety which will have a similar feel.” Recently in the news, a 14 year old girl died on July 6 near the Frog Lake First Nation area near Elk Point after being thrown from her ATV. She was not wearing a helmet.

day after his 47th birthday due to his hard years in exile and increasing illness. This Folk Arts display also held exquisite embroidery, pysanky, wall weavings, linens, clothing and more. The demonstration on how to spin hemp to make linen fabric was a huge attraction. Melitta Zubritsky, who has a passion for beautiful heirlooms and antique items, is the director for this venue and she feels that it is very essential to preserve the Ukrainian Culture. Vegreville’s Exhibition Building was the site for Trace Your Ukrainian Roots where there were many facts about Ukraine which has an area of 604,000 sq. km with a population of 46,710,816 compared to Alberta’s area of 660,000 sq. km with a population of 3,256,800. In the 11th century, Kyiv was the largest city in all of Europe. Ukraine possesses more than a quarter of the world’s fertile black soil. Ukraine stands fourth among the world’s most educated nations in the world. The first computer in continental Europe was built in 1950, in Kyiv, Ukraine. There was also information available on Canada’s First Nationa l Internment Operations 1914-1920 which explained how in the beginning of World War I, the Canadian Fe d e r a l Government enacted the War Measures Act on August 22, 1914. This meant that immigrants from the enemy countries were thought to be a national treat to Canada. So, 8,000 enemy aliens were arrested and held in 24 internment camps throughout Canada, 5,000 of these were Ukrainians. Two videos were shown about this happening: Freedom Had a Price and Jajo’s Secret. This venue also had Pysanka Writing Workshops and Dove Making Workshops available. Citizens were impressed with the memories that Pysanka Festival revived Citizens offered their impression of the Pysanka. Petro Motyka who grew up in the Ukraine and now resides in Edmonton said, “This is my first visit to your wonderful Pysanka Festival. I find it to be very nice and interesting because it reminds me of the Ukrainian Culture I remember from my childhood. I saw blacksmithing, rope-making, and bread being baked in a peeche.” Alex Weber who also came from the Ukraine said, “This festival really brings up my emotions because all this stuff brings back memories from my childhood in the Ukraine. I would say the festival is very, very good and I recommend for anyone who didn’t attend to go next year.” Ernest Pawluski from Edmonton added, “I want to

Today, tomorrow, our whole life through. We will always love and remember you. Love your children and their families.

can carry the disease we test them for the bacteria that causes Lyme disease,” said Dr. Hauer. If one tests positive, the local vet is alerted who will in turn contact the pet or livestock owner and inform them of the result. The vet will also give the owner advice on what to look out for and what kind of treatment would be necessary. In 2013 Alberta Health Services and Alberta Health partnered with ARD’s tick surveillance, allowing for ticks found on humans to be submitted. If someone finds a tick on themselves they are encouraged to contact their local public health clinic to get the tick tested. This reportable disease can cause illness in people, wildlife and domestic animals if the tick remains attached for longer than 24 hours.
