Veg Minor Soccer finishes with strong British flavour
British soccer Coach Jack Sarahs, who hails from Swindon (south of London) has been playing the sport since he was 5. Sent over through Challenger Sports, Sarahs worked with 20 Vegreville teams from various age groups, taught coaching clinics and taught soccer to school students in gym class in June at both St. Martin’s and AL Horton schools. With his many hours overseas coaching, teaching and volunteering, Sarahs is well on his way to being an accredited professional Soccer Coach, which, in his wildest dreams, sees him coaching major clubs anywhere in the world. Michael Simpson Editor June 24 marked the windy windup for minor soccer in Vegreville. A sport with a short season, starting in early May and running until late June, there are still hundreds of kids each year who play the sport in Vegreville, with dozens breaking off to join an indoor soccer team which plays out of Sherwood Park over the fall and winter months. Throughout the month of June, the VMS made good use of British soccer coach Jack Sarahs, who flew in with Challenger Sports to teach the kids the finer points of the game at practices. Sarahs was also busy during the day teaching soccer at local elementary schools in Vegreville as kids in grades K-6 studied soccer (football to Jack) in their gym classes. After hours, Sarahs also provided coaching clinics for the volunteer coaches who will lead teams for years to come. The Brit said he’s loved every minute of his packed schedule in town since his arrival. “I’ve loved every minute here in Vegreville; the people are truly really nice and I would always consider this my Canadian home,” Sarahs said. “More specifically, [I’m grateful to] the soccer association [who] have been so great to me for helping me with abso-

lutely anything from lifts to places to Boston pizza cards I honestly couldn’t have asked anymore from them they and the people here in general have been amazing and I wish my town back home could take some of the class shown here.” Sarahs said when he arrived, he got right to work with the local teams in hopes of seeing them earn some hardware by the end of the season. In the end, the teams didn’t place in the medal rounds, and Sarahs said it was a tough break as he

Veg Minor Soccer finishes continued
In the days leading up to the minor soccer windup party, the Striking Wolves donated $209 to The Breakfast Club after a season of practices where after each practice, players would pay $1 for a shot on goal in a shootout. Kids scrum in the field during the Vegreville Minor Soccer windup on June 24. Over a hundred kids play the sport for a short two-month season, though dozens more will join up with indoor soccer teams that play in larger centers with indoor pitches over the fall and winter months. Lakeland. I wasn’t brought in to get medals, but after working with the kids teaching the young ones how to love and enjoy soccer, the slightly older ones how to improve on their soccer skills, and the oldest teams how to win in soccer and improve as a team, I was hoping to get at least one team with a medal and although it wasn’t my fault I’ve felt devastated the last few days like I’ve let everyone down and had the whole thing on my shoul-
ders and I can’t do anything to fix it for 9-10 Months until the outdoor season starts again. I know I shouldn’t feel like that but it does.” To amen this, Sarahs said he plans to return and try again for next season. “What this made sure of for me was not only will I be returning to Canada next year but I will be returning to Vegreville for around 3 months working with the teams all the full outdoor season… I vow to put
right what should have happened this season and ended up with one of our teams with a medal. They’re all such great kids and decent players and I want to make happen what I feel these kids deserve and that’s memories of them fulfilling their potential and ending up with medals and trophies to sit on their bedside table for years to come.” Sarahs will also make another appearance at the British Soccer Camps happening from July 14th to 18th in Vegreville before heading off to coach in other communities.

Smile of the
WEEK
Fight the bite, beware West Nile virus AHS Submitted Summer has arrived in Alberta, and with it: long days, warm nights and... mosquito bites? Not so fast! Much like you protect yourself and your loved ones from harmful UVA and UVB rays, Alberta Health Services (AHS) reminds you to make a summer habit of protecting yourself and your loved ones from mosquito bites, and their potentially severe health consequences. “With exposure to mosquitoes comes risk of West Nile virus,” says Dr. Gerry Predy, Senior Medical Officer of Health, AHS. “Because some mosquitoes carry West Nile virus, it’s important to avoid being bitten at all.” Whether gardening, golfing, fishing, travelling or even just relaxing outdoors, all Albertans should take these simple steps to prevent bites and protect themselves from West Nile virus: -Wear a long-sleeved, light-colored shirt, pants, and a hat. -Use insect repellent with DEET. -Consider staying indoors at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active. “These steps can make it harder for mosquitoes to find you, and remember:
if mosquitoes can’t find you, they can’t bite you,” says Dr. Predy. After being bitten by a mosquito carrying West Nile virus, humans can develop West Nile Non-Neurological Syndrome (formerly known as West Nile fever) or the more serious West Nile Neurological Syndrome. Symptoms of Non-Neurological Syndrome can be uncomfortable, including fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, skin rash, swollen glands and headache. For those individuals who do develop Neurological Syndrome, symptoms can be much more severe, including tremors, drowsiness, confusion, swallowing problems, high fever, unconsciousness, paralysis and even death. In 2013, 21 cases of West Nile virus infection were confirmed in Albertan residents. Of the 21 cases, four were confirmed as Neurological Syndrome, and one case was fatal. 19 of the 21 cases were acquired within Alberta, exemplifying the very real and potentially severe risk of illness across the province. To learn more about West Nile virus and reducing your risk, visit www. fightthebite.info or call Health Link Alberta at 1-866-408-5465 (LINK).

Grad 2014 honours past, revels in future possibilities Rosanne Fortier The theme for Vegreville Composite High School’s Graduation Ceremony was Honour the Past and Discover the Future. The vintage suitcases spoke about a past that’s worth honouring while the glittery lights accented the promising future of the 59 graduates who resembled royalty with their individual character and sharp suits and gowns as they strolled down the stage at Vegreville Social Centre on June 27. These graduates’ lives will continue to be regal if they retain their work ethics, humanity, flexibility and courage. The ceremony commenced when Mrs. Liz Melnyk, Assistant Principal, issued the welcome message. “Your family, teachers and friends have all played a part in forming your values and belief system, which form your foundation; they are your rock. Honour what is good and what is right in your heart but do have the courage to take risks in order to discover the talents you don’t even know you possess. Discover your passion and pursue it, share what you love with the world, share your talents for the betterment of all and it will be returned to you ten-times. As you write the next chapter in your lives, honour your truths and traditions for they are important and make you who you are. Keep your mind open to new ideas and new ways of approaching things and
you will discover that adaptability, f lexibility, acceptance and tolerance are keys to succeeding as you branch out to postsecondary and the working world. So, graduates please remember that you can always return to your roots and you’re lucky to have that option.” Ceremonies were marked by a lineup of guest speakers who had many sage words for graduates to ponder. Mr. Ray Welsh, School Trustee for EIPS shared his thoughts. “This is a time to honour your past and dream about the future, realize what your parents sacrificed [to] nurture your success…your teachers gave you a worldclass education. You must honour your community which provided the environment that allowed you to achieve. When we look at the future, we discover a great deal of promise, [yet] uncertainty; especially in the rapidly changing technological world we live in. How do we cope with this uncertainty? Most employers and educators say that young people must have people skills, the ability to communicate and work with others as a team and creativity are the skills needed to succeed in the future. These are the same skills that your parents and teachers said are important to obtain.” Mr. Bruce Beliveau, Superintendent spoke next. “There is a saying that your time is limited so don’t waste it living some-
one else’s life. Instead, go by your own inner voice; follow your heart and intuition.” “[If] you leave Vegreville… I hope you return because you will discover that there is nothing better than small town Alberta,” MLA Jacquie Fenske said. Mayor Myron Hayduk said that students need to find a career they enjoy See Story.......................... Page 16

today but to celebrate the journey where you have not been alone; there are people here who have supported, loved, pushed and challenged you. In a small way, your achievement is theirs too. You have honored your family and community from your achievement today. “You will contribute your expertise and passions in the work and life you discover from this day forth… your goals are within your reach, one-step-at-a-time,” Hollinshead said. Former Principal Roy Mills spoke next. “I owe a lot of my success to a teacher I had in grade 11 who encouraged me and helped me get on the right track and I think lots of the students in VCHS have a teacher who they can thank for helping them be the success they are. The power of one person never should be underestimated, an act of kindness or caring no matter how small can carry a huge impact.” Stefanie Ogrodnick, Grad Class President, choked back tears as she said, “I want to thank everyone for their long hours they gave to prepare this graduation, which made this night one we will never forget. Today is the day we been looking forward to for 12 years.
We are finally done this chapter in our lives and we’re ready to open another door. I can say that I couldn’t ask for a more kind, friendly and inspiring grad class. I’m truly touched by how each of you has grown into strong and independent young men and women. Our memories of this town, school and friends will never leave us; these are the best years of our lives and forever will be. As we go our separate ways, I want you to discover everything life has to offer, find your passion and live your life the way you want to.” Angelica Tylipski presented the tribute to teachers where she said, “We want to pay tribute to our dedicated teachers because without their guidance, we wouldn’t be here today. They taught us to set our goals and pursue them. They made sure to make our lessons interesting. I’m so fortunate that I grew up in a small town where teachers make a connection with their students. But we sometimes took their effort for granted. For the new students entering grade 7 for this fall, they should consider themselves fortunate to have the teachers and staff that are at VCHS.”

Rosanne Fortier There’s something about art, just like summer that makes people focus on the beauty of life. Even though it sprinkled with rain outside on June 21, the artists for Art in the Park still displayed their extensive talents inside the Vegreville Train Station on June 21.
Ellen Dunn, owner of Vegreville Train Station organized this event. All of the artists at this venue belong to Vegreville Visual Artists which is a group composed of local area painters, potters, fabric artists, jewelry makers, fused glass artists, photographers, woodworkers and many more artists. To get in touch
with this group, e-mail mpvarga@shaw.ca Diane Fausak, who is an artist, said that she didn’t have any of her work at the event but was at Vegreville Train Station to give moral support to the other artists. Her daughter, Erika Pausak, who is starting to sell her artwork, had a booth at the Downtown Market.

Fire department puts the boots to Muscular Dystrophy
Mark Lucas (Michelle), Dayna Lefebvre, Matt Adams, Richard Welke, Dave King, Phil Rowe,Tina Zavaczki, Jenna Rowe, Ryan Zavaczki, Marshall Mackenzie, Eric Von Tettenborn, Chelsey Bigelow and Glenn Brophy pose for a photo during the Boot Drive. “We utilized apparatuses during the event,” Brophy explained.“Command was located in the South East corner of the Fas Gas parking lot, Engine #1 was on the road right in front of Fas Gas. Rescue was positioned to block off the north entrance to Fas Gas and Engine #3 was located in the Boston Pizza parking lot.” (Photo Submitted) Glenn Brophy, Event Chairman Submitted On May 31st, 2014 from 1000 to 1430hrs, members of the Vegreville Fire Department conducted their 5th Annual “Boot Drive” to raise funds in the fight to cure Muscular Dystrophy. Representatives Lana McInnes and Danielle Waschuk from Muscular Dystrophy were on hand to support the event and thanked all the members who were assisting with the event. Fire Fighters give hope to thousands of Canadians with muscular dystrophy. They inspire generosity and bring awareness to neuromuscular disorders. They are the biggest supporters, and always have been. Canadian Fire Fighters have played an integral role for Muscular Dystrophy Canada since 1954, when a group of parents with children who were affected by Muscular Dystrophy approached a Fire Department and requested assistance in raising funds. With the Fire Fighters leading the way, Muscular Dystrophy Canada conducted the first residential canvass in Toronto, and raised more than $200,000 for research. The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) pledged their continuing support “until a cure is
found.” Since that time, Muscular Dystrophy Canada has become a National Organization supported by more than 600 Fire Departments and Associations across Canada, who currently raise over $2.8 million dollars annually – for a total of $64.1 million since 1954. Muscular Dystrophy Canada thanks Fire Fighters for being our heroes every day, and for making a difference in the lives of people with neuromuscular disorders. The event was a complete success with members raising approximately $6346.93. The boot drive was conducted at the intersection of 67 street and Hwy 16A. “The courage that the public thinks that Fire Fighters have pales in comparison to the courage shown by those with muscular dystrophy. They are the real heroes and are the ones who give us the inspiration to continue to help the cause,” Officer Dave King, Public Relations for the Vegreville Fire Department said. “When you become a Fire Fighter, whether career or volunteer, you join a world-wide family and with family comes a bond which collectively is very powerful. When a family decision is made to go to the aid of another family, which could use a little help, the sense of doing something worthwhile
V.V.A. introduces Lois Bienvenue VVA Submitted Lois is a self taught artist, born and raised in Vegreville. During an illness in 2004, Lois turned frustration into determination and developed her talent by combining her love for art and nature. ART BY LOIS became the name for her black ink pen drawings. You can often see Lois driving the countryside searching for old buildings. She scavenges the barn wood from the structures and makes the frames that grace her drawings. She often adds unique hand carvings to further enhance her detailed creations. J.D.TOODOOLYAS are her stand alone abstract wood carvings. Overall, her work is a product of a vivid imagination, as seen in her abstracts or scenes of old homestead buildings, nature and ani-
mals. Lois finds the inspiration for her work “in the beauty that nature displays, memories that old homesteads bring and the wild and playful spirit of animals”. Lois does commission work. ART BY LOIS has been available throughout Alberta and British Columbia at various Art
Shows and in Galleries. Her contact information is email: lmb@digitalweb.net or by phone (780)-6327958. VVA is a group of local artists supporting and promoting the visual arts in Vegreville. All interested artists are encouraged to contact mpvarga@shaw.ca for more information .
in a world full of selfishness and greed is very gratifying. “Being a part of the Fire Fighting family provides us with the satisfaction of having helped in some small way to make life easier for the members of the muscular dystrophy family,” King said. Event Chairman Glenn Brophy said the department was extremely grateful for the support of the business community in town, which helped make the event successful.
