Michael Simpson Editor It’s been a long and trying battle for Craig Woloshyn, but after being told he would never make it to the CFL, he’s proven any critic he’s ever had wrong, signing paperwork with the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts on May 27 only hours after getting a phone call to get on a plane and head east.

Woloshyn had recently seen action as a special invite to Toronto for the CFL Regional Combine, a second chance after missing the draft out of University the previous year. After shattering expectations with his speed and size, Woloshyn then headed to New York to play in an American invite

One Way or Another, Voters Will Force Politicians to Reform the Senate Gregory Thomas Canadian Taxpayers Federation Standing in the vast foyer of the Supreme Court of Canada after the judgment on the Senate reference was made public, former Liberal leader Stephane Dion demonstrated, once again, the legendary tonedeafness to the electorate that ushered him into electoral obscurity in 2008.

To listen to Dion, the millions of Canadians demanding action on Senate reform should simply shut up: the Supreme Court has spoken.

Forget about electing or abolishing the shameful bordello of backscratching, he suggested. Instead, we need to accept an unelected and unaccountable upper house, recommended perhaps by a panel of academics and jurists — graduates all, no doubt, of the best schools, the product of the best families.

Dion hailed current Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau’s initiative in expelling senators from the Liberal caucus. He suggested that Prime Minister Harper follow Trudeau’s example — thus elimi-

nating any elected authority over the senators who vote yes or no on every decision of the House of Commons.

On the Senate’s many deficiencies — the corruption, the criminality, the expense-padding, the partisanship — Dion was silent. On the ongoing Liberal party activism of the senators expelled from the Liberal caucus, their fundraising, their organizing, their attacks on the Conservative government, Dion had nothing to say.

On the bizarre composition of the upper house — substantially unrevised in 150 years — Dion had nothing to say: that 7.5 million Canadians living in B.C. and Alberta get 12 votes in the Senate, while seven million Quebecers get 24, and two million Atlantic Canadians get 30 — well folks, that’s just how it goes in Canada, according to Dion and his leader.

Agri-News Canola crops need at least five living and healthy plants per square foot to reach their full yield potential.

“The unfortunate thing is that many canola crops do not achieve this population, which means growers are potentially leaving money on the table,” says Autumn Barnes, agronomy specialist with the Canola Council of Canada.

The ideal is to have seven to 10 plants per square foot emerge, leaving some margin to lose plants during the season to insects, disease and weather conditions, and still have enough plants to reach the yield potential.

Yet, the math suggests that

with an average seeding rate of five lb./ac., a thousand seed weight of five grams, and a typical 50 percent seed survival rate, the result is only 5.2 plants per square foot. “The number is even lower with heavier seed,” Barnes says. “This doesn’t leave much margin for error.”

In order to keep seeding rates at five lb./ac. and also achieve seven to 10 emerged plants per square foot, the seed survival rate will have to increase.

This can be done with the following best management practices for canola seeding: Seed shallow. Half an inch to one inch below the packer furrow is the recommended

seed depth for canola. This will reduce days to emergence and reduce the seed energy required for emergence. This also reduces the number of weeds that are able to emerge ahead of the crop.

Seed at a consistent depth.

The more consistent the better. For some drills, the overall average may be one inch, but the range could be zero to two inches. Too shallow or too deep both contribute to seed and seedling mortality, and those that do emerge from too shallow or too deep will have highly variable emergence dates, creating an uneven field.

Seed slower to ensure good and even seed depth from

all openers. The ideal speed will vary by drill and soil conditions. In general, at higher speeds, rear openers tend to throw more soil over the front rows. Seed in these front rows will be buried deeper, making them slower to emerge — if they emerge at all. Re-check depth when moving from one field to the next.

Limit seed-placed fertilizer.

Seed-placed fertilizer can damage canola seedlings.

There can be safe low rates of seed-placed nitrogen in some cases, but the best practice is to save the spot in the seedrow for a maximum of 20-25 lb./ac. of phosphate and put other nutrients away from the seed row.

Penetrate trash. Spread

residue evenly in the fall, and have a drill that can penetrate trash so all openers place seed uniformly into the soil.

Leave a firm seedbed.

Openers that fracture the seedbed to place fertilizer lower than the seed may not provide the firm moist seedbed that canola needs.

Worn openers that do not provide a defined seed ledge and high fan speeds that cause seed bounce can also reduce an opener’s ability to place seed precisely.

Pack appropriately. In dry conditions, pack more to conserve moisture in the seed row. In wet conditions, reduce packing pressure to limit hard crusting. Packing pressure can be a delicate balance, and often changes by soil type as well as moisture conditions.

It’s easy to understand why the prime minister washed his hands of the Senate file in such haste. The Senate is a national disgrace, with one former senator just completing a jail sentence for fraud on the taxpayers, two more facing criminal charges, two more under RCMP investigation, and the rest anxiously awaiting the outcome of a forensic investigation led by a bat-

talion of accountants from the auditor general’s office.

With an election coming in 12 to 18 months, the Senate is a dirty word in the Conservative war room.

And it’s a word we’ll be hearing lots between now and the election, as the RCMP, the auditor general and the director of public prosecutions do their thing.

Meanwhile, the federal finance department recently reported a $5.1-billion surplus, just for the month of February — the biggest monthly surplus since the 2008 financial meltdown.

It is the most concrete evidence yet that we’re heading for a balanced budget, sooner rather than later, and with it, hopefully lower taxes and lower public debt, part of the virtuous circle that leads to a growing

economy and more jobs.

“Jobs,” “bigger paycheques,” “bigger payrolls” are the words we can expect to hear from Stephen Harper leading up to the election, not “Senate,” “senators,” “Senate reform,” “constitutional negotiations” or “referendum.”

But Canadians are not so

easily spun. Canadians are demanding an end to the corruption, the entitlement and the featherbedding so synonymous with the Senate.

Savvy politicians, starting with official Opposition Leader Tom Mulcair, popular cabinet minister Maxime Bernier and Saskatchewan’s

Brad Wall, the nation’s most popular premier, know a winning issue when they see one.

Canadians want a vote on getting rid of the Senate.

They’ll vote for politicians who respect democracy as much as they respect the courts. If Harper and Trudeau ignore the Senate,

Improving the bottom line Agri-News Now that the cow-calf business seems to be on the upswing, an Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD) specialist has some suggestions where cow-calf operators can invest to help improve their bottom line.

“Improving working capital, and investing in productive assets, herd health and yourself can all bring excellent returns,” says Rick Dehod, agriculture farm financial specialist, ARD, Edmonton.

“Herd health is an important part of the ongoing operations.

Sometimes, when funds were

tight, a vaccination protocol may not have been followed as this expense was perhaps thought of as not critical. Not following a herd health protocol often leads to poor financial performance due to disease and lack of creature comfort.

This just compounds cash flow problems and, ultimately, the viability of the operation.”

Dehod also advocates improving working capital.

Bring account payables current or to within 15 to 30 days.

Trade creditors have helped you through the tough times and you will need them again when margins tighten.

Pay down some small loans to

improve accessible working capital into the future.

Bring any operating loan down to within its margin limit.

Keep in mind that an acceptable current ratio should be greater than 2 (current assets/ current liabilities).

Put some money away for those “lean” periods.

“Do projections and compare those monthly projections to actual returns and costs,” says Dehod. “This will enable immediate identification of problems. Production returns and costs are time critical due to the seasonality of the business. By doing a cash flow projection, you can plot out your sales and your feed requirements. You can see the months when your margins are positive and will have funds to invest or reduce your financial commitments. By comparing your projections to actual, you can make those adjustments to continue to manage a positive margin.

“Talk to your banker early to work together on any issues.

Raising beef is a capital intensive business. You need access to your operating credit and trade creditors. As you go through your operating and financing plans for 2014, it is a good time to review 2013, and project income and expenses for 2014. A year-end net worth statement is another important document to complete. Having this information in-hand is helpful when talking to a lender regarding your operating plan, your operating loan and your financing intentions regarding equipment upgrading and maintenance. A lender wants to know the financial health of the farm business.

They will look at a few key ratios to see if an operation is in good financial shape and whether it can afford more debt and ultimately more risk.”

Investing in productive assets is another strategy Dehod recommends.

How old is your cow herd? Is it time to keep back some heifers, and cull some older less productive cows from the herd?

Lock in some positive margins – you don’t go broke taking a profit.

Feed costs – Consider the alternatives to forward price feed to lock in your feed purchase prices.

“Become familiar with the Cattle Price Insurance Program and how you can protect the down side of your operating margin,” says Dehod. “Choosing an insured price provides a ‘floor’ price that acts as protection against the market being lower than the insured price for the month that the insurance is purchased for. If the market goes above the insured price, producers can still take advantage of the

upside and sell you calves for that higher price.”

Agri-Stability is another important risk tool to manage the next time margins move to break even or negative. For some of you it may be the right time to re-enroll. The enrollment deadline is April 30th.

Review this strategy with your accountant.”

Last, but not least, Dehod recommends investing in yourself.

“Strong business management skills will enhance your decision-making skills, and help give you the competitive edge. You are a professional and all professionals embrace life-long learning to stay at the top of their game. ‘Social costs’ of carbon dioxide a climate change scam Michelle Stirling-Anosh Troy Media Environmental NonGovernmental Organizations (ENGOs) can’t seem to stop themselves.

Maybe it’s time to heed the words of people such as UK MP Douglas Carswell (“We’re spending money that we don’t have to solve a problem that doesn’t exist at the behest of people we didn’t elect”) rather than those of unelected and unaccountable ENGOs which continue to ramp up climate hysteria in an effort to induce governments, industry and the public into agreeing to a carbon tax.

American ENGOs, for example, recently issued a report called “Omitted Damages: the Social Costs of Carbon” which claimed the use of fossil fuels and the emission of ‘carbon pollution’ (i.e. carbon dioxide/CO2) will have disastrous consequences unless we take ‘cli-

mate action’ now. They say carbon pollution costs society in terms of extreme weather, illness, deaths and displacement due to sea level rise.

Let’s look at the facts: According to a report called “The Global WarmingExtreme Weather Link” by retired Environment Canada scientist, meteorologist Dr. Madhav Khandekar, the world has not experienced any trend in more extreme weather despite a rise in CO2.

A comparison of CO2 emissions by country shows that industrialized countries enjoy significant benefits in health, wealth and standards of living. Modern medical interventions, warm, safe buildings, and abundant food supply are all products of industrialized societies.

As to the forecast of people being displaced by rising sea levels (back in 2005 the UN had forecasted that there would be 50 million climate

refugees by 2010, mostly due to sea level rise) there has actually been zero climate refugees. Of course, this hasn’t stopped ENGOs from persisting in making crisis proclamations.

ENGOs focus on alarmist rhetoric recently led Dr. Richard Tol, a Dutch economist at the University of Sussex, to very publicly withdraw from the IPCC Working Group II report writing team, saying . . .”there are positive benefits to climate change, but we are not always allowed to talk about it.”

According to Tol, the increase in temperatures of 0.74 C has led to an increase in global economic output by 1.4 per cent, or US$11 trillion over the course of the 20th century.

Another little discussed benefit of an increase in CO2 is its ‘atmospheric enrichment’ for crop growth-enhancement which has resulted in a greener world and an increase

in crop yields by about 16 per cent or $170 billion, according to an October 2013 report

by Dr. Craig Idso, chairman of the board of the Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide and Global Change.

Even worse news for ENGOs, data from NASA’s Clouds and Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) suggest that two-thirds of 20th century warming was caused by natural factors, which are beyond our control and far more influential than human-made carbon dioxide.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to tax natural factors, which may explain the ENGOs insistence on claiming a social cost of carbon (SCC) - in this case of some US$24 to $37 per ton - which can then be used to capture “the benefit of reduced carbon pollution from a policy in terms of expenses avoided.”

By putting a price on SCC, these ENGOs are undoubtedly hoping that industry may

simply cave in to their rhetorical hysteria as a means of ending regulatory uncertainty.

Hopefully, industry and business leaders will think twice before falling for this “Social Cost of Carbon” scam.

We don’t have to look far to see the true cost of an ENGO model of a low-carbon society.

It was, after all, David Suzuki and the Pembina Institute’s study “Renewable is Doable” which pushed Ontario into implementing a low-carbon Green Energy Act (GEA), which was panned in a cost-benefit analysis by economist Ross McKitrick last April for the Fraser Institute. He concluded “. . . the GEA path is currently 10 times costlier than the retrofit (of coal plants) option, and will eventually be 73 times costlier if pursued to the point of providing 4,800 MW of year-round generating capacity.”

Governments in the EU and

UK, which have pursued stringent greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions and lowcarbon targets, have seen these policies impoverish citizens, ruin industry and destroy shareholder value in conventional utility companies. These countries, now find themselves, like the Ontario government, facing the consequences.

Considering that global warming stopped before Kyoto was even implemented, and that the rise carbon dioxide over the past 16 plus years has not led to more global warming, isn’t it time we reassessed the catastrophic scenarios of these climate change alarmists?

The fact is, the overall benefits of “carbon” far outweigh the alleged social costs.

AGSI, BASF raise thousands for Stollery Submitted Andrukow Group Solutions & Partners and their growers – in conjunction with BASF - reinforced their commitment to supporting local community initiatives with the presentation of a cheque to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation in the amount of $14,788 on Friday, April 25th in Edmonton.

The presentation was made as part of the AGSI and Partners Grow With Your Community program, which provides growers

with the latest chemical technology and leading edge agronomic support for their canola, cereal, and pulse crops.

In its third year, the program provided clients with BASF Headline, Twinline, and Priaxor as part of their overall agronomic business plans. Increases in production were donated by the farmers to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation supporting upgrades in neonatal and pediatric critical care, ambulatory care, and the

Women and Children’s Health Research Institute – ultimately assisting in quality care for the hundreds of children and their families that visit the Stollery each year.

In its three years, the Grow with Your Community initiative has raised nearly $25,000 in support of the Stollery, and will run for a fourth year in 2014.

“We are so proud and excited to be working with our growers and BASF within the Grow with Your Community program,”

Spring warm up for stored canola Canola Council of Canada Storing canola through the summer? Storage experts recommend turning on aeration fans now to warm up stored canola to 5-10°C. Canola to be stored on farm through summer will be safer if warmed up before outside temperatures get hot.

“The goal is to reduce the temperature differential between stored canola and the outside air,” says Angela Brackenreed, agronomy specialist with the Canola Council of Canada. “This reduces the amount of moisture movement within the bin, and can prevent the concentration of moisture that can lead to spoilage and heating.”

Cold grain should be turned or aerated to raise the grain temperature to between 5°C and 10°C. Joy Agnew, a grain storage researcher with the Prairie Agricultural Machinery Institute (PAMI), says now is a good time to warm up dry grain. “If you use air that is more than 10°C warmer than the grain, the air will lose its ability to hold its moisture as soon as it hits the cool grain. This means it will condense on the grain and possibly freeze - which would cause major airflow issues,” she says.

Agnew recommends turning the grain after it has been warmed. “If possible, entirely empty the bin and put it into another aeration bin,” she says. “If this is not possible, pull out several loads and put them back on top of the same bin. The goal here is to try to mix the grain to help even out the temperature variations and help warm up the grain a bit more.” She recommends that stored canola remain below 15°C. The larger the bin, the greater the risk of spoilage if canola is not warmed.

“Bins larger than 5,000 bushels are more susceptible to moisture migration because there will be a greater temperature differential between the outer

edge and the core of the bin,” Agnew says.

Canola that went into the bin with moisture above 10 percent, even above eight percent, deserves extra attention this time of year.

“Tough canola is at much higher risk, and it should be dried if it can’t be delivered right away,” Brackenreed says.

A hot air dryer will do the job quickly. Natural air drying with aeration fans can also work, but the ideal conditions for this technique are when outside air temperature is higher than 15°C and humidity is lower than 65 percent.

Agnew adds that canola dried with a hot air dryer should be cooled to 15°C for storage.

Plastic mulch can help tree seedlings survive Agri-News Planting trees on Alberta’s agricultural landscape in the form of shelterbelts provides a range of benefits to the province, including wildlife and habitat corridors, soil and water conservation and improved road conditions. Shelterbelts may also benefit individual farmers by increasing livestock and crop productivity, protecting buildings from wind, and reducing energy

bills.

Jeff Renton, project manager at the Agroforestry and Woodlot Extension Society (AWES), is an advocate of using plastic mulch for weed control in shelterbelts. His work at AWES involves helping farmers, ranchers and landowners establish shelterbelts on their property.

“The labour and financial costs of establishing and maintaining shelterbelts can

often be barriers to landowners,” says Renton.

“Plastic mulch provides a simple, affordable and highly effective way to help ensure that tree seedlings will survive, thrive and produce a healthy, functional shelterbelt. Plastic mulch has been used in Alberta for almost 10 years and has proven to be an important agroforestry innovation.

Rosanne Fortier Crown Jewels of Canada is a non-profit national social group for Canadian women of all ages. Many fun-loving women who belonged to Crown Jewels of Canada Society’s Classy Canadians of Vegreville appeared at Leonel’s Place on May 12 to celebrate Olga Osinchuk’s 90th birthday while they dined on lunch and strawberry shortcake which was topped off with ice-cream. This gathering was also meant to bestow an honorary membership upon Olga Osinchuk, who is a member of the Classy Canadian Chapter of the Crown Jewels, upon the celebration of her 90th birthday. A gift certificate from Olga’s favorite restaurant, Boston Pizza was also presented to her.

Fran Lazarowich, Queen of the Classy Canadians said a short speech. “It was written in the Crown Jewels of Canada Society’s April’s

newsletter that Olga Osinchuk continues to live in her own home, driving around her little red truck, and she hasn’t missed a chapter meeting yet! Olga is a Charter Member of the chapter.

“Olga loves to attend CJCS functions that are out of town and entertains them all along the way with her keen sense of humor.

“She’s raised six children and is a wonderful cook where she even published a cookbook for her family members. She is an artist also and an active member of her church and community. We are honored to honor her and want to wish a Happy Birthday to Olga from Jewels across Canada.”

ClaraJanet resides in Vegreville and is in grade four at A.L. Horton School. Her teacher, Ms. Debra Dyer, nominated Clara-Janet for Alberta’s 2014 Great Kids Award because of Clara-Janet’s special qualities that she demonstrates every day to her family, school and community. Hence, Clara-Janet was given special recognition, an Honorable Mention certificate for Alberta’s 2014 Great Kids Award which was signed by The Honorable Manmeet S.

Bhullar, and Jacquie Fenske, MLA for Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville.

“I feel really proud of myself for receiving this certificate because I was the only one who was nominated in this entire school and I won out of many people,” Clara-Janet explained.

Clara-Janet described her volunteer involvement. “I volunteer for the school by helping in the cafeteria where I help make hot dogs or any other task that needs doing. I’m a Snow-Angel. I feed and care for peoples’ dogs. I help at the Kids Club, Skating Club and take pictures when needed to at events. I’m always

busy.

“I cut my hair to help people who have cancer on my mother’s birthday.

When I did this, they put the hair into packages and made a wig out of it.

“Since I was seven- yearsold, instead of getting presents, I asked for money to donate to those in need or collected stuff for the lessfortunate on my birthday. I do this because I already have enough toys. I would prefer to give to people who don’t have many essentials in life. We donated socks, mittens, coats and toques.

Clara-Janet spoke about a special memory she had.

“When I first donated socks and other items, one person gave me a huge hug and said thank-you. I felt pretty proud of myself and I continue to feel really happy when I give to others. The

people who don’t have anything are happy too because they get all this stuff they might not normally have.

“Everyone should give to the less-fortunate because there are millions of people in Canada alone who don’t have the essentials of life.

In the whole world, there is probably billions, so I am just giving as much as I can to help them.

“I think if anyone has a bit too much, why don’t they give a bit away? Too many possessions and money can make a person angry, greedy

and very jealous.” ClaraJanet mentioned.

Clara-Janet noted what makes volunteering special.

“Volunteering is lots of fun because you get to meet new people and make new friends. Also, you get to help people, learn new things, it’s so cool.”

Clara-Janet’s mother is her biggest inspiration. “My mom is the one who mainly inspires me to give to others. Mom said if we help people, they will respect us.

She really helped me out with gathering the donations for my birthday and when I cut my hair to help people who had cancer.”

Clara-Janet said her favorite subjects at school are Spelling and Math. “It’s really fun to do the adding in Math.” She said.

She continued on to speak about her life, hobbies and what her dreams are for the future. “My hobbies are collecting stuff for others on my birthday, playing football, swimming, skating, Girl Guides, Kids Club, playing with my friends, Spiderman stuff and just doing many more things. In the future, I want to continue to donate stuff on my birthdays and try to get some time off so I can do horseback riding. I want to be a horseback rider and a veterinarian when I grow up.”

how to plant shelterbelts and how to keep them alive and healthy. They want the most efficient and effective solution; something that’s low cost and low maintenance.”

Shelterbelts come in many shapes and sizes and can serve different purposes depending on where they are located. They may be planted near a building to protect it from wind, or in crop fields to help distribute snow evenly and create better soil conditions for crops.

Planting trees for shelterbelts is different than planting trees for forestry operations. Most forestry operations will accept around a 12 per cent mortality and loss. In agricultural and shelterbelt plantings, where each individual tree is an important part of the wall against wind, and a dead tree is a gap, farmers generally aim for closer to 100 per cent survival.

One of the largest threats to newly planted trees on agricultural land is competition from weeds for light, space, water and nutrients.

Agricultural land is usually

very open and productive, with high levels of light and plenty of available nutrients.

This provides the perfect growth environment for weedy species that can easily out-compete the slower growing tree seedlings in the first three to five years after planting. Weed control is a serious issue, and this is where plastic mulch comes in.

“Farmers are incredibly busy people and don’t have a lot of time to spare on shelterbelt maintenance,” says Renton. “With plastic mulch, annual spraying or tilling to reduce weeds is not required, leading to substantial time savings.”

Plastic mulch is an effective weed controller for several reasons: it provides a physical barrier that weeds cannot penetrate; it blocks light from reaching the soil; and, its black colour warms the soil, which kills any weedy plants beneath it and leaves the tree free from competition. The benefits don’t stop there. Warmer soil is more productive and, by providing a barrier against evaporation, plastic mulch enhances water availability to the trees. The

combined effects of weed control, warmer soil and increased water availability result in significant growth increases in the trees. For example, trees grown under plastic mulch may grow an average of 25 per cent faster .

The genius of plastic mulch lies in its simplicity.

Shelterbelts are typically comprised of one to five rows of trees and shrubs, and are commonly planted in straight lines. Plastic mulch comes on a roll that can be applied easily in these types of plantings.

The applicator is pulled along over the planted seedlings by a tractor. It tills troughs in the soil that weigh down the edges of the mulch and keep it in place. A worker must then follow behind and cut holes for the trees to grow through.

When planning to plant a shelterbelt, be sure to include maintenance in the equation. Plastic mulch is a simple, affordable and highly effective innovation that can help simplify maintenance and give seedlings the best possible chance to thrive.

Barbecue season affects meat consumption Agri-News Statistics suggest Alberta’s meat eating habits change once the temperature warms up.

“Consumers change their meat consumption behavior in the summer months, increasing their spending on meats more suited for

the grill, like steak, and decreasing it on those that are not, like roasts,” says Jordan Mahar, post-farm gate business analyst, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD), Edmonton. “They will also change their meal preparation strategies to be more outdoors oriented.”

According to statistics, steak sales total about 100,000 kilograms on a cool winter day, but double to about 200,000 kilograms in the warmth of summer.

The threshold temperature that triggers the sales increase appears to be around 11 degrees. Some meats, such as beef roasts, are less suited for barbequing, and show a decrease in sales on warm weeks as Albertans begin to shift their spending towards steaks.

“Ground beef has long been a staple in consumer diets, but how it is prepared changes with the season,” says Mahar. “In the summer, customers form patties on the barbeque and in the winter they prepare meatloaf. This can be seen in the sales of value-added grinds, like beef patties, where sales rise with the temperature.”

“With average monthly temperatures peaking in July and surpassing 11 degrees from June to August, we can expect sales

to experience a sustained increase in May, reverting to normal levels in late September,” adds Mahar.

“However, this is not a

reason to stock up the freezer as markets have

already accounted for the impact of weather.

Consumers should buy what they need and respond to price changes accordingly.”

where each child created a

blueprint while holding tightly to ‘four musts’ for a playground. They created a “me” doll to use to test their structures. Their playground had to have a structure that spanned a 7 cm gap and could hold their “me”, a structure that was at least 10 cm tall and hold their “me” doll standing on the testing cards and sheet, a shaded area and a garbage can.

Clydesdale questioned the students on why a cylinder, triangle and arch were strong shapes to build with, while she noted that a good shape had a weight that was equal and balanced. Students grasped the concepts well. They noted that a cylinder was able to hold a lot of weight because it had a nice flat surface, there were no points where a cylinder could bend, and the weight was equal all the way around. They continued on to say that a triangle was a good choice because they have a flat and wide bottom that helps it to be stable. When asked about arches, they replied that arches have a strong, thick bottom with no bending points and the weight is equal in every spot.

Then the children challenged their minds and hands to design their own playground while they used only 20 of the materials provided.

SHANDRO, Caroline 1923 – 2014 On Monday, May 26, 2014, Caroline Shandro of Willingdon, Alberta passed away peacefully at the age of 90 years.

Heather Soldan (nee Bowman) Sept. 15, 1946 - May 24, 2014 With great sadness we announce Heather’s sudden death in a violent car accident. She is survived by her husband Allan, sister Beth Bressette (Don Redden), brothers Jamie Bowman and Dave (Cheryl) Bowman, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. Heather was born in Edmonton and raised in Prince George, BC. She attended Vancouver Art School and the University of Victoria, graduating with a BA in Education. She taught in Merritt and Penticton and later as a reporter and columnist for the Penticton Herald. She compiled some of the best of these columns in a book called “All Things Considered” which was published in 1989. In 1990 she moved to Vegreville, the town in which her father had spent his childhood, where she wrote a second book describing the story of the Vegreville Psyanka, called “Now THAT’S an Egg!” . Later she compiled a collection of true stories by local pioneers in a book titled “Pulse to Pen Remembering When”. She met the love of her life, Allan Soldan, and after their marriage in 1992 she settled on the farm at Two Hills.

Heather loved farm life and gardening, as well as her hobby of photography. She promoted a love for music among the youngsters and adults in the area by teaching fiddle for 23 years, which led to the formation in 1993 of “The Fiddlin’ Kiddlins”.

This group actively entertains in the community through music and dance, and puts on annual spring concerts and family dances.

Heather was a director for the Alberta Society of Fiddlers and an active member of the Two Hills Fellowship Chapel. Heather touched the lives of many with her passion for music. Her energy, productivity and enthusiasm will be missed by many.

A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Two Hills Community Centre with Pastor Glenn Wiebe officiating, followed by lunch, sharing of memories and jamming. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a favourite charity benefitting young people.

Actors & crew celebrate their performance in the Big Bad Dinner Theatre held at Andrew School on April 25.

Andrew School Submitted All their hard work and sleepless nights paid off as close to 150 people enjoyed a wonderful evening of good food, fellowship and entertainment at Andrew School on Friday, April 25th. The Big Bad Dinner Theatre was a joint effort between the Andrew School Junior High Drama department and the Andrew Family & Communit y Support Services (FCSS). A delicious meal was prepared by Charlene Shulko, Elke Carr, and the FCSS volunteers, with students serving the meal.

Fifteen students with the guidance of their drama teacher, Breanna Sorotsky, performed the trial of the Big Bad Wolf in a forest setting complete with the chirping of birds and insects.

The cast included Sydney Gr i m m ( R eb e c c a Warrellow), a reporter providing the background leading up to the class action lawsuit, Fairy Godfather (Zach Miller) was the prosecutor, Evil Stepfather (Tristan Warrellow) was the high-powered defense attorney, Judge Wise Old Man (Brandon McCullough) presided over the court proceedings, and the Big Bad Wolf (Mykayla Nurse) was the notorious criminal. Members of the class action suit were Little Red Riding Hood/Bill Woodcutter (Tyra Shulko), Grandmother Hood/Miss Muffet (Gabbie Sumner), Pig One (Tasha Snyder), Pig Two (Julie Wortel), Pig Three (Kalayha Sidor), the

Shepherd (Addison Ng), and the Boy Who Cried Wolf (Breanna Feener). Dawson Danyluk and Caelan Zabrick assisted with lights and sound and Bryce Hrehorets was on hand as the understudy.

In the end the judge invited the jury (the audience) to clap for a guilty or not guilty verdict. It was a fortunate ending for Big Bad as he walked away a free wolf.

Andrew FCSS and Andrew School hope to make this a yearly event and expressed their gratitude to everyone who made this successful evening possible.

VCHS Band spring concert hits the high notes Rosanne Fortier Vegreville Composite High School Band delivered a rock-solid, positive spirit while they kept in tune in life and during their annual Spring Concert on May 14. Mr. Bill Simpson, Music teacher declared that the Senior High Band was a very dedicated group who came in early two days a week to practice. The Grade 8/9 Band and Senior High Band won an award at the 2014 Wendy Brook Festival.

The Grade 7 Band opened the concert as they set the tone with well-placed notes for Majestica by Brain Balmages.

Senior High Band presented Balladair by Frank Erikson with class.

Moving on, Grade 8/9 Band had the audience dancing in their seats when they played a Jazz tune called Jump Jive ‘n’ Wail.

This performance began with a relaxed swing that titillated into a groovy piece.

VCHS Jazz Band dived headlong into a set that sustained fever-pitch.

Caleb Baldwin presented a well-versed piano solo.

The Symphonic Band offered a classy set.

Mr. Simpson expressed gratitude for the support his band program received from Principal Mr. Hollinshead, Mrs. Melnyk, and all the staff at VCHS. He also acknowledged the Band’s parents for their unwaver-
