RCMP take pride in Tim Horton’s Camp Day
Members of the Vegreville RCMP Detachment worked the drive thru and front counter at the Vegreville Tim Horton’s for Camp Day. Camp Day is an annual event that raises money to send kids on a camping adventure of a lifetime. All coffee sales during the 24 hour period, as well as money raised through special events and activities, is donated to the Tim Horton Children’s Foundation. Members of the Vegreville RCMP were happy to be a part of this very special day. Pictured are (left, Cst. Dave Hopkins, Centre, A/Cst. Dustin Luchak, Right, Sgt. Jeremie Landry). (Photo Submitted)

Rosanne Fortier On May 31, Raise-A-Star Fundraiser tradeshow with their 31 home-based businesses was the ideal spot to purchase an authentic and uncommon item. This sale was held at Vegreville Centennial Library. Shannon Kerr, vendor for Jockey P2P and Silapa and Nicole Basarabowich, Fundraising Coordinator for Vegreville Preschool Association were the organizers for this tradeshow where the profit will go towards a new stage for A.L. Horton School. Melissa Kerr, Assistant Principal for A.L. Horton School described why it’s so important for the school to have a new stage. “As a school, we do so many things throughout the year that we want to present to our kids’ options for configuration. We do Christmas concerts, Speaking in Class, Reezdo and the Geography Challenge. We want to give a lot of opportunities to kids, to prop them up to show their talents where the spotlight is on them. Performing gives kids the opportunity to learn skills that adults are nervous about. The more opportunities they are given to be in front of an audience, it becomes normal and a way of life for them. “We want the option of having a stage available that
is easy to set up. The stage we currently have is old and heavy. So, it’s a burden. “I really want to express my gratitude to Shannon Kerr and Nicole Basarabowich for helping to put on this tradeshow for our school. It’s because of generous community members like this that communities are united. It makes it a win-win situation. “If we have a stage set up that encourages community groups to do presentations, it benefits the whole community. It’s not just an A.L. Horton stage but a Vegreville stage.” Kerr said. Students Erinn Kerr and Madison Marzhak held a lemonade booth where they gave 50% of their profits for the new stage. Erinn said she’s really happy to do this because it will be neat to have a new stage at their school. Madison added that she is happy and excited at the idea of getting a new stage too. The vendor, ‘It Works’ was selling body applications that were all natural and help tighten and tone the body. She said that they were doing well with their sales. She feels a new stage is essential because A.L. Horton School deserves a new stage “Their stage is very old. I like to help out the school because they don’t usually have a lot of money.”
A.L. Horton School is still accepting donations for this new stage. If anyone wants to donate, they can contact Melissa Kerr at 780-632-3113. The vendors who participated included Scentsy, Fifth avenue jewelry, Younique Quilting by Judy, MIZ, Prantz Woofy Cookies, Mini Garden Joy, Sparkle Tattoo, Partylite, See Spot Go Cleaning, Javita, Passion Parties, Chula Sandals, Grace Adel, Norwex, Mary Kay, Jockey P2P Himmel, Sent World Financial Group, It works – krista, Epicure, Arbonne, Jamberry Nails, Happy Hippo bath products, Lynnae Images by Nicole Gold, Canyon, Watkins, Petite Boutique, Princess House, Oma’s Gems, Hot Head Stitches, It works – Connie

Albertans recycle millions of electronics, paint, and tires It began with the tire recycling program in 1992, continued with electronics recycling in 2004, and paint recycling in 2008. What are we talking about? The fact that through these programs, Albertans have recycled 85 million tires, six million computers and TVs, plus 13 million litres of paint, and the Town of Vegreville has contributed to these impressive milestones. The Vegreville Sanitary Landfill does not only accept waste; this site has been accepting end-of-life computers, printers, monitors, scrap tires, and leftover paint for recycling since each of these recycling programs began. Vegreville is part of a network of over 470 municipal recycling depots set up throughout the province, helping to make it convenient for Albertans to recycle. Dave MacDonald, Public Works Utilities Manager with the Town of Vegreville, states that “Alberta’s tire, paint and electronics recycling programs play an important role in the day-to-day life of our landfill. Not only do they save valuable landfill space, they are a reminder
that Albertans have a commitment to the environment that is secondto-none.” Alberta Recycling, the organization that manages theses recycling programs, will have a promotional tent at Vintage Day, happening at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village this Sunday, June 29. Bob Barss, Chair of Alberta Recycling, notes that “Our environment benefits from the commitment of Albertans such as the residents of Vegreville, who make great use of the Vegreville Landfill by dropping off their old computer or spray paint cans. Keep up the good work!” Alberta Recycling is a not-forprofit organization responsible for managing Alberta’s tire, electronics and paint recycling programs. Incorporated under the Societies’ Act, Alberta Recycling operates as a Delegated Administrative Organization and reports to the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development. Krista Bergen hangs out with WISEST over the summer
Submitted For most students, a summer job often involves working at a local store or business, or doing work for the town. However, for one Vegreville Composite High School student, summer employment will be a little more unusual. Krista Bergen will be spending six weeks studying pork loins. “I wouldn’t have thought of working with them initially, but I’m open to new experiences,” says Krista, a Grade 11 student who was recently accepted into the University of Alberta Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science and Technology (WISEST) summer research program. The program encourages applications from young men and women who have completed Grade 11 and who have exceptional academic standing in math and science courses. Only forty students from Edmonton and area were selected in 2013 from applicants. During the next six weeks, Krista will be working with supervisors Bimol Roy, Jennifer Potter, and Dr.
Heather Bruce of the Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science to study how muscle pH and fat content affect the tenderness, juiciness, f lavor and overall acceptability of pork loins. Not only will she be using sensory testing, which is common in food and product development companies, but she will also be involved in data entry and interpretation of statistical analysis. Krista enrolled in the program with encouragement from her teachers as she has always been interested in science and biology, and she is eager to learn new skills. The experience should prove valuable to the development of this future scientist in the making. “I hope to come away with experience in science and new careers that I might not have known about. Everyone seems really friendly,” Krista said.

Bowl for Kids’ Sake strikes positive chord with youth Rosanne Fortier Children will mold tomorrow’s world. One person can be an example that can direct a child towards a loving, moral and contributing life. Friendly people, cheerful neon lights, party food, prizes, neon and white party themes made bowlers’ moods elated each time they earned a strike at the Bowl for Kids’ Sake event on June 21 at Vegreville Bowling Lanes. But the real gratification was in the idea that supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters creates role models and mentors for children who shape and transform a young person’s future in a positive direction. Ashley Ferguson, Vegreville Program Facilitator for Big Brothers, Big Sisters, knows the impact that one person can make in a child’s life. Ferguson stated that the proceeds of over $4000 from
this event support the program in Vegreville. Ferguson described how Bowl for Kids’ Sake went. “We had all our teams of five people for the adult bowl, so that went really well. Since it was a busy time of the year, the turnout for the family bowl was [a little lower than] we expected. We’re hoping next year that the amount of participants will grow. Otherwise, we were very pleased with it. Everyone who attended had fun.” Some local professional were involved also. “Brendon Kowalsky, Customer Service Manager for Alberta Treasury Branch is on our committee and there was an ATB team who participated in the adult’s event. “I would like to thank everyone for helping to support this event and I hope they come out next year.” Ferguson added.

Mundare’s community garden sows seeds of growth Michael Simpson Editor Officially titled the Children’s Family Community Garden, the project headed up by Mundare resident Debra Raymakers is geared towards giving children in town a spot for learning about growing natural food outside of the classroom. Raymakers and supporting volunteers planted a blueberry bush in the garden on June 14 to honour the dads who were riding through town as part of the Ride for Dad fight against prostate cancer. Raymakers said that there will be different activities throughout the summer aside from the garden that give children a chance to deepen their understanding of the way they get their food. “Some of the plants here will grow from seed, others are
coming in fully grown so that kids have a chance to see the different stages of how things develop,” Raymakers said. “The intent is for parents to join in with their kids and make it a family thing.” Towards the fall, children who planted items in the garden will have a chance to harvest and prepare what they’ve grown by way of some cooking exercises. The garden was supported by ARSAN, Mundare’s Communities in Bloom committee, the Town of Mundare and the Vegreville and area Parent Link Center. PLC Outreach Program Coordinator Laurie Haaland said that the center sees the merit to supporting initiatives such as the Children’s Family Community Garden in Mundare because it helps build capacity in families.
ATB supports Vegreville Food Bank Doug Schaffner from Vegreville’s Alberta Treasury Branch (ATB) presented a cheque to the Vegreville Food Bank on June 20 in the amount of $262.25 which was proceeds from their customer appreciation day. Clients of the bank who attended the BBQ donated funds that ATB put back into the community by way of the donation. Treasurer Caroline Kiist, member Gladys Palahniuk, Vice Chair Kevin Lesoway and faithful volunteer Sarah Pertram accepted the donation which will be used to help hungry families in the Vegreville area. 4H Multi club kids highlight their achievements Michael Simpson Editor It was time to weigh in on the progress made over the past several months for the many 4h multiclub members during their annual achievement day June 7 at Ag society grounds. Kids in ages from 8 (cleaver) to 14 years of age worked on projects in the areas of woodworking, photography, small engines, crafts and cooking. Projects began in October and were wrapped up by June 1. “Our club is always excited to have new members. We’re a healthy group with lots of opportunity for growth.
Our members have the opportunity to develop skills outside of the classroom in many ways. At 4-h we learn to do by doing.” Rachel Farr, one of the group leaders for the Multi club, said. Field trips through the year included northlands race track to learn about different equestrian groups, blue sky’s to study actual small engine repair practices, Olsen Art Photography studios to study some macro photography techniques as lighting tricks. Crafting students did a shopping extravaganza.

These groups will have you wanting to return

historic sites such as Pier 21, Atlantic Museum and The Citadel. All three had excellent guided tours. At Pier 21, some of our students had time to sit down with the archivists and investigate their family roots prior to 1935. Students enjoyed a ride in Vietnam War vintage amphibious machines around Halifax and then into Halifax Harbour for a view from the waterfront side. Next came a tour of the Athabascan, a military warship that was in dock for repairs. Our trip to this region was culminated with a trip to Peggy’s Cove, which is always a delight to see. While here students were made aware of the Swiss Air Disaster just off Peggy’s Cove. Students then travelled to Northern New Brunswick where they visited an aboriginal community for a day at Eel River Bar and an Acadian village. The Dalhousie Museum gave students a glimpse of local history. In addition to travel, students had time to beach comb, and take in the cool salty air of this part of Canada. Students came home with great memories
and new friends. While in Alberta, we travelled to Banff National Park and stayed for 2 days. While in Banff, all students rode the Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain for a breathtaking view of the region. Students learned about the Sulphur Mountain mineral springs and their role in helping bring tourists to this region. A tour of the famous Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel gave students first hand information on why Cornelius Van Horne was so successful in bringing tourists from around the world to see the mountains and stay in his luxurious hotel. His philosophy was “You can’t export the scenery but we can import tourists.” Therein lay the reason why the CP hotel chain was built across Canada. The next day we travelled to Drumheller where stu-
dents visited the Royal Tyrell Museum, the Hoodoos and had a guided tour of the Atlas Coal Tipple, the last remaining coal tipple in Canada, which is a National Historic Site. We left Drumheller and travelled back to Vegreville to prepare for our last two days of organized activities. Next day was a guided tour of our legislature followed by time well spent in the Royal Alberta Museum. Our last day was full of local information starting with a tour of Highland Feeders, a beef feedlot where 32,000 cattle are fed out before being shipped for slaughter to become prime Alberta beef. This was followed by a trip to the Lavoy Hutterite Colony for a tour
and dinner. Here students learned about this very agrarian lifestyle and why this group came to Canada originally. This is always a highlight of the exchange. We are privileged to be able to have a glimpse into their lifestyle. This has been another successful Sevec Exchange where students have had the opportunity to experience and learn about another part of our wonderful country. In addition, we hope that all students have made a connection with a student in New Brunswick and that this relationship continues for years to come. Vegreville Composite is very grateful to Elk Island Public Schools for having the wisdom to approve of
this exchange program. Connecting students from across Canada - one student
at a time - can only help to build unity and understanding no matter where you live or how diverse your background is.

Andrew School Submitted On May 28 Andrew School was the recipient of two generous cheques. Ron Stratichuk, president of the Andrew Lions Club, presented assistant principal T.J. Kennerd with a cheque for $1000.00 to go towards the school swim program during the 2013-2014 school year. The Andrew Lions Club have been longtime supporters of the program where grades 1 & 2 students and grades 3 & 4 students travel to Vegreville for three days of two-hour swim instruction per

Love your family SADOWNYK, Annie In loving memory of our dear mother, grandmother and great grandmother who passed away July 3, 2006. Just entered God’s eternal home And left the gate ajar. Forever loved and missed by son Richard and Arlene, daughter Lorraine and Lyle, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Do All Volunteers Need a Criminal Records Check? Pt. 1 Lisa Topilko Volunteer Services Coordinator, Vegreville & District FCSS Not all volunteers need a Criminal Records Check (CRC). Some organizations ask certain volunteers to complete a CRC if the volunteer is going to be working with money or with children and youth under 18, seniors, the disabled, or anyone in a vulnerable condition. Volunteers who request a CRC need to report to the RCMP detachment in their home community. If people from the Two Hills area are doing volunteer work in Vegreville, they would go to the Two Hills detachment for their CRC. What else can be done
besides CRCs? Many organizations ask volunteers to 1) complete an application form, 2) go through a formal recruitment process, 3) be interviewed, and 4) provide references. Some groups require new volunteers to work with someone more experienced for a trial period. Volunteers are given thorough training, orientation, and contact information of their direct supervisor. Does this sound like something an employer
would request? Indeed, it does. Volunteers and the people who engage them need to treat the task like a job. Both the volunteer and the organization need to be professional, prepared, and accountable. Sometimes, the volunteers are not permitted, under any circumstances, to put themselves or the clients (children, seniors, disabled persons) at risk through one-on-one contact. So, for example, a volunteer sports coach doesn’t ever give a
young player a ride alone in their vehicle. Or a volunteer tutor doesn’t ever meet a student in a place that isn’t public. Two-way protection is provided this way: people can always see the volunteer as well as the person the volunteer is working with. The risk of inappropriate behaviour is greatly reduced. Also minimized is the risk of false accusation. In this space soon will be Part Two: Paying for a CRC. Stay tuned!

Green Home of the Week thumbs at work Town of Vegreville workers were busy planting new trees, specifically, Vegreville Patmore Ash trees, inside planters on the downtown strip earlier in June. The tree has become the official Town tree, bearing Vegreville’s name after the tree was discovered here by an arborist who noted the excellent spring bloom and other distinguishing features that set it apart from other green ash trees. These trees will gradually replace the fruit-bearing trees that mark the downtown walk. (Michael Simpson/Photo)
