Rosanne Fortier There is a special young man among us. On February 20, Corporal Christopher Madensky was awarded a Sacrifice Medal for his accomplishments with the Canadian Armed Forces between the years 2001 and 2008. Rocky Mountain Equipment held an award pre s ent at ion for Madensky who is a Heavy Duty Ag Tech in Vegreville. “We are extremely honored to present a Sacrifice Medal to Cpl. Christopher Madensky. This medal is awarded to Canadian Forces former members who sustained an injury during their service.” said Lou Andreola, Regional Commander for Joint Personal Support Unit.
Cpl. Madensky joined the Canadian Armed Forces to bring peace to Canada and other countries. He was on the front line in Afghanistan in 2006. “I liked seeing the changes when we were in Afghanistan. Before we arrived, the children weren’t allowed to play any sports and we made it that they could play again. Kandahar Soccer Fields, which was a public institution, opened up for sporting events.”
Madensky explained. “ The Internationa l Women’s Day at Governor’s Summer Palace allowed women to come into it where it was protected before and they got to take off their burkas. This gave me a sense of purpose. These changes were temporary but if we weren’t there, that wouldn’t have happened.” “[It was challenging] being in downtown Kandahar. We lived just
off the Governor’s Summer Palace. We always got rocketed and those things could really explode! So, even when we were sleeping, it was still dangerous. When we went on patrol, even a piece of garbage could be an improvised explosive device (IED) and an ani-
mal on the side of the road could be packed w it h e x plosive s.” Madensky added. Canada played an active role in the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan in December that same year following the September

played very well, but lost in the C Semi-Finals and left the competition ranked 7th. Warawa describes the event as an awesome experience as the ice conditions were fantastic and the game play was “world class. 7th place out of Alberta is quite a feat! Kendall also won the Bo Davidiuk Award for ‘the front end player who displays the best combination of sweeping prowess, team support and sportsmanship’. This prestigious award comes with a $500 cash award and has been won by Matthew Ng in 2012, Marc Kennedy in 2013, and Bryce Bucholz in 2014.

“Although we didn’t win the Brier, our performance will be stamped on this
trophy forever. I am truly honoured to be recognized alongside some of the past
winners! I cannot wait to do it again next year! I’m indebted to United Fabrication and Pomeroy Inn and Suites for their sponsorship. Without such great sponsors, chasing this dream would not be feasible, Warawa said. Another outcome of this team’s hard work is the Skip, Tom Sallows, being asked to be Team Canada’s 5th player at this year’s Brier in Calgary, playing with John Morris, Pat Simmons, Carter Rycroft and Nolan Thiessen. We will be hearing more from this team in the future!

A pancake supper has most of the food that people who fast during Lent abstain from. Some people profess that it’s a way to use up the leftover eggs, milk and butter so it doesn’t go to waste during Lent. (Rosanne Fortier/Photo)

SELF EMPLOYED?
YOUR TAX DEADLINE IS COMING HERE
A R E S O M E O F T H E M O S T CO M M O N Q U E S T I O N S
Am I really self employed? – Self-employment is determined by the amount of control you have over your work. If you are in any doubt about your relationship, you can request a ruling from the CRA using Form CPT1, Request for a Ruling as to the Status of a Worker under the Canada Pension Plan and/or the Employment Insurance Act. What is the per kilometer rate? – Unless you have already submitted a logbook to the CRA for a previous year, you cannot use a simplified method to calculate your auto expenses. You need to have a detailed logbook for the year to report your expenses correctly. Does a sign on my car mean I can claim 100% of my mileage? – You can claim the sign cost as an advertising expense but it does not mean every kilometer you drive is for your business. You still need to record your kilometers in a logbook. Can I write off my mortgage? – The answer is no. Self-employed Canadians are allowed to claim a portion of their mortgage interest based on the amount of space used for the business in their home. Mortgage principal is not a deduction.
Are credit card statements enough? – No. The CRA will want to see a receipt with a breakdown of the cost and taxes paid. Self-employed Canadians are more likely to be audited, so make sure you keep your receipts and other documentation to support your business expenses. Do I have to make instalments? – If you owe $3,000 or more in taxes in any two of the last three tax years, the Canada Revenue Agency will request that you make quarterly instalments rather than an annual payment. Failing to make instalment payments could incur an interest charge. Do I need a GST number? – If your annual revenues are more than $30,000, you have to register for the GST/HST. However, even if your revenues are less than this, it is usually advantageous to register so that you can claim input tax credits for the GST/HST you pay. A tax professional at H&R Block can talk about other credits and deductions that may affect you. To find the office nearest you visit www.hrblock.ca
Can I claim my home phone? – If you only have one phone line into your home, you cannot claim 100% of the expenses for business. The CRA will expect you to have some personal use so you will need to calculate the percentage used for business and personal. The same applies to your internet connection.

Вітаємо з Масницею! Olena Babiy
Have a Great Masnycia!
If you need a reason to make and eat pancakes just as many as you want, then now you definitely have one –recently Ukraine celebrated Masnycia! Masnycia, also known as Maslyana or Butter Week, is a holiday celebrated during the last week before Great Lent. During this week Ukrainians are saying goodbye to the winter and welcoming the spring. Traditionally every day during this week people are making and eating pancakes with different toppings. You can ask – why exactly pancakes? During the last week before Great Lent it’s already prohibited to eat meat, but still allowed eggs, milk and cheese. Therefore, pancakes with various toppings are just the perfect treat for these special seven days. Our ancestors even believed that the more pancakes you make the sooner
warm weather will come. They also believed that during Masnycia spirits of ancestors are coming down to earth, and to appease them, people were always leaving the first made pancake on the window so they can enjoy it. As for the other traditions of Masnycia celebration, people
News Advertiser Page 9
also made a straw scarecrow, dressed it in women’s clothing, fastened a pan to its hand, and walked with it around the village. At the end of the week, this scarecrow was burnt, what meant farewell to the winter and the long-awaited arrival of the spring. This ritual was always
accompanied by fun, dancing and singing. Moreover, Masnycia week was also the last week before Great Lent when it was allowed to celebrate weddings. So, I hope everyone had a great Masnycia and enjoyed their pancakes!

Ask the Guys Dear Classified Guys, I was on my way to work when a house passed me on the highway. I'm sure you know the ones I'm talking about. It's those prefabs that are moved in halves to their new location. As it pulled alongside and I looked through the protective plastic at the master bath, I realized it was a nicer house than mine. When I had my house built years ago, it took more than 10 months. Now I'm wondering if prefabs are actually better than building onsite. I see builders advertising in my newspaper to build them all the time. Are there substantial cost savings by building with prefabs?
• • • Carry: No matter how many
times I see one, I still think it's strange to see a house traveling down the highway. Cash: But it would be stranger to see a family eating dinner while it's moving! Carry: Prefab houses have changed a lot over the years and today are more common than you may think. If fact, you may have visited family or friends who live in one and probably never even realized it. Cash: Years ago, prefab houses
Duane “Cash” Holze & Todd “Carry” Holze 03/01/15 ©The Classified Guys®
were considered to be lesser quality and poorly constructed. It was common to see a house with trim down the side where the two halves joined together. However today, many of the prefab builders have incorporated improved engineering and manufacturing procedures to create excellent quality homes. Carry: Most prefab homes are manufactured in factory conditions. Much of the construction is automated or performed in a controlled environment so the weather conditions don't affect the materials. This helps reduce the possibility of mold, a recent concern in the housing market. Cash: The selection of prefab designs has also grown over the
years. With so many design options, it's like hiring a personal architect. Carry: The largest benefit to prefabricated houses is time and cost. Depending on the design, a prefab house can be completed in one third of the time of on-site construction and can save you up to 10% or more on the cost. Cash: Much of the savings results from the lack of delays due to bad weather or coordinating the subcontractors. Since 80% to 90% of the construction is performed in the factory, very little needs to be finished on site. Carry: And who knows, maybe one day the house will be shipped fully furnished.
Fast Facts Modular Idea
Reader Humor Heavy Traffic
Modular homes are not a new idea. They have been built in the US since 1890. Around 1908 Sears started selling mail-order homes through catalogs and shipped them around the country. Between 1908 and 1940, they sold over 100,000 homes. The houses were typically mass-produced box type designs ranging in price from $500 to $5,000. The kits included everything you needed like nails, paint, lumber, building supplies and thankfully, a step-bystep manual.
When my wife was pregnant with our first child, she became very sensitive about her weight. One day, I began to notice the change when we were traveling down the highway. As the traffic merged, we ended up driving directly behind a tractor-trailer carrying one of those large modular homes. My wife looked around and became increasing nervous, slumping down in her seat. "Does the house in front of us bother you?" I asked her. "It's not the house," she replied. "It's the big sign on the car behind us that says, Wide Load Ahead" (Thanks to Samuel K.)
Half the Story When prefabricated houses became popular in the 1970's, some of them gained the stereotype of cheap designs and poor quality. However, today's prefabricated houses are a whole new design and stronger than ever. In fact, most prefab designs incorporate more lumber and supports than their on-site counterparts. Since the houses must be transported from the factory to the construction site, additional lumber and supports are added to secure a safe trip and a quality finished product. •

A total of 158 Canadian Forces personnel had been killed in Afghanistan since 2002. This is the single largest number of Canadian casualties in a military conf lict since the Korean war in the early 1950’s. A resting place we visit, To lay our flowers with care, But no one knows the heartache, As we turn and leave you there. Always a smile instead of a frown Always a hand when one was down Always giving, thoughtful and kind Wonderful memories she left behind. Michael Simpson Editor A project that began roughly two years ago but stalled late last year is gaining momentum again after taking the winter off. “Kinettes had been seeking a major project for about two years and this came about late last year where we had the idea to join with the Kinsmen who are putting up their outdoor skating rink. We approached the Town with the talk of a partnership as they were replacing a playground along 47 Street. We’d hoped to complete this project last fall however due to changes in the rules surrounding using funds raised by clubs who worked events overseen by the Alberta Gaming Liquor Commission, there was a setback on our timeline,” Candice van der Torre, Kinette President, said. The budget to replace the playground structure sits around $100,000, and the Kinettes are asking the Town of Vegreville to supply ground prep for the site which includes bordering
and edging for the playground site as well as pay for the installation costs and gravel base and pilings and footings. “We presented to the Town that we’ll pay for the structure but asked that they pay for everything else to get the playground there,” van der Torre said. “That price should be around $50,000 assuming costs haven’t risen too much from the previous year. In our initial presentation to council went well and I think they were positive, wanting to work collaboratively with us. Looking at it from a Kin/Kinette standpoint this is a great way to introduce a great KinPark project. Working with [Recreation Culture and Facilities Manager] Paul Suiter, he recognized that since that park was deemed in need of replacement in the new future and welcomed the Kinettes proposal to replace the existing structure.” Because of AGLC rules, the Kinettes will be doing fundraising in support of the project to make up the $100K. One
upcoming event will be a ladies night out event which takes place on March 21 at the Vegreville Social Center. The theme “Girls just want to have fun” will feature a catered dinner and award-winning hypnotist Sebastian Steel with an 80’s f lair. “We want ladies to know there’s no limit on how much hair spray you can use in getting event,” van der Torre quipped. “There’s no attire too bright, so break out the neon leg-warmers and scrunchies from cryostorage because it’s time to get awesome to the Max! The whole thing will be totally solid.” The event will have notable prizes including AC/DC tickets and Coach Purses, which, arguably are not 80’s purses but are still to die for, van der Torre said. Dusk ‘til Dawn will be providing a 80’s-charged dance to cap off the night, and give the girls a chance to have fun. For more information on the ladies night event, ladies are encouraged to call Raeanne Yackimec at 780 603 0029.

A Valentine’s candlelight affair Rosanne Fortier Citizens were bewitched with romance, inspiration and beauty at ‘Love in the Library’ on February 13. Vegreville Centennial Library offered an occasion to spoil a person’s sweetheart or oneself with their annual wine and cheese fundraiser. Novelist and singer/songwriter Gayleen Froese presented a book reading and performed a few songs later. Gayleen’s advice for writing a book was you can do it because there’s nothing in your way. You just have to give up things and carve the time. She then spoke about a writer’s contest where people are challenged to
write a novelette in 3 days. This period was full of questions which any writer would admit that Gayleen thoroughly and truthfully answered. The evening proceeded with local performers – Anna, who did belly dancing, Brendan Barkwell played music and Debbie Fedoruk, Ken Timanson and Jennifer Young performed also. “We want to thank all the people for attending and the performers for doing a great job. We received a lot of positive feedback from the public.” Donna Williams, Manager of Vegreville Centennial Library said. “Love in the Library is a great event because the
atmosphere is fashionable and out-of-the-ordinary. It changes the perception of a wine-and-cheese fundraiser because it’s an event that nice for anyone to attend.” Mayor Myron Hayduk said. “The event was good. I enjoyed Gayleen’s comments about her writing style and career. The fun part was when she described how she was locked in Chapters for three days when she participated in a reality show.” Blane Woodall said. “The author was multitalented, very personable and fantastic. The bucket draws and prizes were really appreciated by the participants.” Nick Chrapko said.
