Local star Onel Potgieter shines
Onel’s immaculate voice met low notes smoothly and powered through high notes. Her heart was in all her performances at An Evening with Onel at Vegreville Alliance Church on February 28. (Rosanne Fortier/Photo)
Rosanne Fortier In any language, music speaks louder than words. This was the message that Onel Potgieter, locally renowned singer and inspirational speaker conveyed to a full dining hall during An Evening with Onel at Vegreville Alliance Church on February 28. Onel hails from South Africa. She grew up in a musical family and has been singing since she was four years-old. Her father was a big inspiration for her. Onel has lived in Viking with her husband, Manie and their three children since 2002. She sings professionally and has released three CD’s. Onel’s immaculate voice met low notes smoothly
and powered through high notes. She expressed through non-verbal means that her heart was in all her performances. Between songs, Onel wasn’t scared to touch on the joyful moments and tough issues as she illustrated stories from her life. She spoke about how
grace was a free gift from God before she sang one of her favorite songs, A mazing Grace. Following this, she described how Christians, especially her sister, faced the end of life with unquestionable faith, optimism and courage. Onel dedicated Celine
Dion’s song ‘Fly’ to her sister. Then she performed a song from her CD, ‘In Heaven’ which was about how her sister’s death left a void but her sister is now in heaven and there’s no place she would rather be; she’s an angel now whose wings will shelter her.

Smile of the
WEEK
Attention Yarn Bombers! If you haven’t caught wind of it yet, the Town of Vegreville is encouraging everyone to Paint the Town Red this summer leading up to the Chamber of Commerce’s 40th anniversary celebration of the Pysanka, which was built to commemorate the centennial of the RCMP. As we ask residents to plant red flowers, businesses to consider red in their window displays, so we come to you, our beloved Yarn Bombers… The Impact Vegreville Committee is asking you to step forward and join in the fun this year with some red-infused works to adorn poles, trees or flower planters on public property as part of the decorations. Whatever your upcoming projects may be, we hope that you’ll consider this request, as we’ve been enjoying the work that you’ve done over the past few years. We’re sure you’re creative to come up with a few concepts to go with the colour, we’ve put out the request, and we await your response in kind. Cheers, Councilor Michael Simpson, Impact Vegreville Committee member vEGGfest Committee member

To trap a Leprechaun Every year, on St. Patrick’s Day, leprechauns become a nuisance at Andrew School. These little creatures were up to much mischief and the call went out to students to build traps shortly before March 17. These carefully crafted traps were made to entice a leprechaun or two in hopes of calming down the mischief at school. The majority of their mischief was been confined to the office area, but footprints belonging to these tiny creatures were found throughout Andrew School. (Photos submitted)

5 things every Canadian should know about obesity Carolyn Shimmin Troy Media There has been a dramatic increase in the number of Canadians living with obesity over the past few decades and it is often cited as a risk factor for other chronic health conditions including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and some forms of cancer. This means that obesity is frequently a hot topic in the news. But media stories often miss the mark when it comes to informing Canadians about the complex factors that lead to obesity. What we know is that obesity is both a chronic and often progressive condition. Research has identified a number of factors associated with obesity including: physical activity, diet, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, immigration and environmental factors,
which all interconnect in complex ways and patterns. This means that while the root cause of weight gain may be a reduction in metabolic rate, overeating or a reduction in physical activity, secondary factors such as biological (e.g., genetics), psychological (e.g., depression) and/or socioeconomic (e.g., poverty) may also pose significant barriers to weight management. So the short term, ‘quick-fix’ solutions often espoused by shows like The Biggest Loser - focusing on maximum weight loss in a minimum amount of time - are generally unsustainable in the long term and associated with high rates of weight regain. Experts point to the fact that successful obesity management requires realistic and sustainable treatment strategies. Here’s what everyone should know: The prevalence and severity of obesity in Canada has increased dramatically in the past three decades while fitness levels are decreasing. Research shows that one in four Canadian adults and one in 10 children are clinically obese. Obesity rates have roughly doubled in the past 30 years among both males and females in most age groups in both adult and youth categories. Since the late 1970s, increases in the prevalence of obesity have been proportionately greater for the heaviest weight classes. On top of this, evidence demonstrates a trend toward
decreased fitness for children, youth and adults. Obesity is a costly epidemic. It has been estimated that obesity costs the Canadian economy approximately $4.6 billion in 2008, up $735,000 or 19 per cent from $3.9 billion in 2000. Measurement of obesity is not straightforward. The Body Mass Index (BMI) should be considered a rough guide for predicting health risk in individuals. The distribution and amount of body fat are also crucial determinants of some obesity-related health risks. For example, fat around the abdominal region has a stronger association with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease than BMI. Hence measuring waist circumference alone provides a more complete picture of overall obesity-related health risk than BMI. Experts are looking to government regulations and food industry. Similar to smoking and problems with alcohol use, obesity is not simply the result of individuals making bad decisions, but is strongly inf luenced by the social and commercial environments that puts some individuals at higher risk for certain behaviours. Some risk factors include: the promotion and availability of high-calorie food, limited access to healthy foods, lack of time for meal preparation and barriers to physical activity. Experts point to promising government regulatory approaches such as: discouraging higher calorie consumption by enforcing serving sizes, banning food and beverage advertisements targeting children, zoning laws prohibiting fast food sales near schools, regulating nutrition claim packaging, tax credits for fitness activities, more affordable recreational activities and better walking paths. Weight bias is associated with significant discrimination against people living with obesity in employment, health, healthcare and education and is often caused by widespread untrue negative stereotypes that persons with obesity are lazy, unmotivated and lacking willpower and self-discipline. Inspiring Education detrimental to our children I’m a parent of a young girl in Grade 4; I’m extremely concerned with the direction our government is taking in education. I know while many other parents are concerned, many aren’t aware
of what “Inspiring Education” involves. I myself have learned a great deal from researching the subject and talking to many other parents that share my concern. Inspiring Education is a
“policy shift” to completely change Education in Alberta. It is experimental, not evidencebased and has failed in other jurisdictions. No longer will children be taught by a teacher; stu-
dents are put into groups to “discover meaning” and teach themselves. The teacher becomes a “guide on the side”. Knowledge and skills are no longer a priority. Instead our children will
learn by “discovery”, with emphasis on computers, videos, and kids teaching kids. Learning outcomes will decrease, and there will be a ‘dumbing-down’ of content because the “Discovery Learning” process takes much longer. Proponents claim “teaching knowledge” is unnecessary – students have “Google and Spellcheck”. This curriculum rewrite is costing taxpayers millions of dollars and with the projected budget cuts our money would be better spent on saving our teachers, investing in more teacher aides, and resources for children with special needs. Unfortunately it seems this isn’t a priority; instead our Government is investing in an experimental system that will be implemented in all A lber ta Schools September 2016. The Ministry of Education should not dictate teaching methods. Our teachers should decide teaching methods! Under the Government’s plan, textbooks and workbooks will be replaced with software, apps and etextbooks. iPads and tablets will be on supply lists, making it necessary for parents to supply these devices. Technology is fine as a tool, but not to replace teachers! School Libraries are scheduled to become ‘learning commons’, spaces where students gather with their devices. More and more schools will allow test rewrites, open book exams, allowable cheat sheets; why? – to ensure statistics look like all students are succeeding! Academic students are being pushed down, and not allowed to advance at their own rate. Testing will soon be eliminated altogether;
marks or grades already consist of terms like “Excellent, Basic, and not meeting expectations”. No longer will schools or students be held accountable. Discovery Math in Alberta is a disaster; turning many students off math with its convoluted strategies. It cost parents thousands of dollars on tutors, learning centres, etc. The Ministry k nows Discover y Learning has failed in other jurisdictions, but still chooses to implement it in all subjects next year, even after hearing from university professors, teachers, professionals and thousands of parents about the damage this system will do to our children. Discovery Learning isn’t a new concept; why is our government trying to “reinvent the wheel”, but this time expecting a different result? “If I have seen further than others, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants”. Isaac Newton The Government claims that for the first time ever our schools will be “student-centered” and “Teachers must teach less for children to learn more”. They say with inquiry-based learning kids fall back on their previous knowledge. How can young kids fall back on knowledge they have not yet learned? Young kids need direct instruction; the evidence shows this is the best way for young children to learn. I believe teachers have always been studentcentered. Discovery Learning will cause a lot more work for teachers and leave our children without the knowledge and skills they require to CONTINUED TO PAGE 22

ATCO Electric donation gives VTSS Handivan service a lift (Left to Right) LeeAnne Kermode (ATCO Electric), Dwayne Hlady (VTSS President), and Elsie Kisilevich (VTSS Driver)
Submitted ATCO Electric recently announced a $1,000 donation to help the Vegreville Transportation Services Society purchase a new handivan so that it may continue delivering a safe and reliable transportation to local residents in need. “ATCO Electric has a long history of supporting the communities we serve,” said Bobbi Lambright, President of ATCO Electric Distribution. “We are pleased to support a project that addresses a critical issue in the community and helps improve
the quality of life for local seniors and residents with special needs.” “Access to transportation enables our residents to remain connected to the community and maintains their independence,” Elaine Kucher, Program Coordinator of the Vegreville Transportation Services Society. “The handivan provides much needed access to medical facilities and community services resulting in an improved quality of life for those facing a number of challenges.”
Residents must qualify for the Handivan program. It is used mainly by seniors and area residents having economic or mobility issues. The van seats
approximately three people and holds up to three wheelchairs. Almost 90% of travel is to and from medical appointments.

Ask the Guys Dear Classified Guys, HELP! I'm getting cold feet and need advice. It all started two weeks ago when I decided to ask my girlfriend to marry me. After dating for a few months, I realized she was the one. Then, last week, my mom and dad decided to have a yard sale. Besides selling the usual stuff, my mom decided to clean out her closet of dresses, blouses and pants that no longer fit. I didn't know they were having the sale when my new fiancé and I stopped by to share the good news. While we were there, some of the clothes caught her eye, so my mom gave them to her. When we got home, she tried them on. As she fashioned the new outfits, it suddenly dawned on me. OH MY GOD, I'm marrying my mother! As I thought about it, she even has the same hair color, eye color and personality. Now she has her clothes! Maybe I should call it off before this gets worse. What do you think?

Carry: Some say that when the
going gets tough, the tough go shopping. Maybe it's time to take you fiancé out for some new clothes, and this time, avoid your

parent's yard sale. Cash: Getting married can be stressful, even before you start planning the event. You've made a big decision recently and it's common to revisit the idea, especially considering your recent wardrobe dilemmas. Carry: The truth is that you may actually be marrying someone who has similar attributes to your mother. There are many studies that suggest people seek out relationships with others who have similar physical or emotional traits as their parents. It tends to offer a sense of connection and comfort. Although, Freud probably has a few very interesting theories on that matter as well! Cash: Despite your fiancé's
newfound resemblance to your mother, don't let the new clothing decide your future. Before you make any final decisions, clean out the closet. Tell your fiancé that the clothes make you feel uncomfortable and offer to take her shopping instead. She's sure to agree to a shopping trip! Carry: If you find you're still unsure of your decision to get married, find someone to talk to about it, like a therapist or close friend. Sometimes just talking through the jitters is enough to warm those cold feet. Cash: And the next time you plan on stopping by your parent's house, be sure to call first to make sure they're not selling anything else!

While most engagements are met with sheer joy and happiness, "cold feet" is more common than you might think. As your "singlelife" ends, there's often a sense of worry about losing independence or breaking family connections. Most experts agree that it's best to work through these feelings before proceeding, rather than shying away from the anxiety. Some suggest journaling to reflect your thoughts or confiding in a professional or friend.
From the moment my friend Jake told me that he was getting married, Jenn, his brideto-be, took over planning every detail and left Jake out of most of it. Needless to say, I was surprised when he called and asked me to find him a band for his reception. As a radio DJ, I pulled a few strings and got him the hottest band in the area. However, when I called to give him the great news, he told me it probably wasn't going to work out. "What do you mean?" I said. "These guys are perfect." "Well," he sighed. "When Jenn told me I could pick the wedding 'band', apparently she only meant the style of my ring!" (Thanks to Buster D.)
Wedding Bliss Many marriages seem to have their ups and downs. And the same seems to be true of the marriage rate over the past 50 years. Between 1960 and 1990, the number of marriages per year continually increased from 1.51 million to 2.44 million. However, since 1991 there has been a steady decrease in the number of matrimonies. Year 2008, with 2.16 million marriages, was the lowest since the record high in 1990. Fortunately for businesses, the wedding industry is still worth an estimated 71 billion dollars annually. The average wedding costs around $31,000 and involves 169 guests.

Wes Stefanec What leads up to this day that people celebrate? Well, on Thursday (Maundy as some refer to it) Jesus sits with his disciples and lays on them the itinerary of the next few days, none are overly impressed, somewhat fearful and one in particular overrun with greed. The story moves forward as Jesus gets arrested and is declared guilty of offences against the religious movements of the day. For these, he must be put to death. So far nothing really spectacular here; man is convicted of crimes he didn’t commit and must be put to death – kind of sounds like things that happen in the world today. This happens on Friday, now you can imagine for a moment being around someone for three or so years, being taught, encouraged and loved, and then suddenly that person is gone. Likewise for the disciples of Christ; He was assassinated on Friday, they scattered in fear of their own lives and not really knowing what to do. This takes place on Saturday (the Sabbath). By Sunday, all of Christs’ disciples are scattered, somewhat lost and afraid,
but Mary Magdalene and the other Mary (gotta love names that are the same) wander up to the tomb where they laid Jesus and the stone was rolled back, Mar y Magdalene of course is freaked totally out to see two angles – one at the head and another at the feet where the body was laid. They asked her what all the fuss was about, what is she so upset and frantic about? She exclaims that someone has removed her lord and she does not know what they may have done with him. She is going off on these angels and as she turns to another voice that she presumes to be a gardener and says to him “sir, if you moved my Lord can you please tell me where you placed him,” and suddenly she realized that this man is not the gardener… Wow! She’s totally off the deep end now. Why you ask? Because this man before her is Jesus! Well, she wants to hug him and
just be all happy over the fact he is back, but he says to her that he hasn’t been to the Father yet, and that she should go and tell the brothers that He (Jesus) is alive. Crazy three days, eh? Well on a closing note, Jesus’ resurrection is the direct result of his crucifixion three days prior. ‘This resurrection of Jesus confirms he is the son of God, end of story,’ you say. Not really, it is just the beginning of yours. This is where the good news starts; when we decide to lay down our own past lives and believe in the resurrection of Jesus we have an opportunity for a new beginning. Just remember he changes you from the inside out. I know, I know, if it was from the outside in, we could all have nicer hair, or hair, be a little less plump, nicer eyes, straighter teeth, or even teeth period. But God is about your heart, and you having a relationship with him. It
is the most important thing to him. His words say that Jesus did not come to condemn the world but to save it. It is up to you now; he has come to bring salvation to you this day. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Giving us an opportunity to start over, ask for forgiveness and invite him into your heart and life. And know what it’s like to be restored to life, for the old is gone and the new is here, happy Resurrection day. Although donations are welcome and will not be turned away, we are having a free Easter dinner on Monday afternoon at 5pm. If you find yourself without family, friends or would just like to meet some new people come and join us at The Rock, 5014 – 50 Street. We will open April 6th at around 12 noon with supper being served around 5 p.m. and as usual, it will be absolutely awesome.

CARTER (Bilyk), Florence Little did we know that morning God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide. And though we cannot see you, you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again. Sadly missed by loving husband Bob, brothers & sisters, nieces and nephews and great nephew
Liz Petruk (Sister In Law) Aug. 20, 1931 – Oct. 13, 2013 As life unfolds another year Treasured memories keep you near. Quietly remembered everyday Sadly missed along life’s way. Just as you were, you will always be Treasured in my memory. We cannot clasp your hands Mother and Father and Brothers and Sister In Law dear; Your faces we cannot see. But let this little token Tell that we always remember you all. Loving and kind in heart and mind. What a beautiful memory they left behind. Lovingly remembered by Daughter & Sister Marian Austin & family, Kathy & family

The new Farm Implement and Dealership Act will continue to ensure Alberta farmers are treated fairly when purchasing and maintaining farm equipment. “The Farm Implement and Dealership Act helps protect the investment that Albertan farmers make in farm implements by establishing minimum requirements for sale agreements, warranties, and the availability of spare parts,” said Jeana Les with the Farmers’ Advocate Office (FAO). “The Act also provides a mechanism for resolving disputes regarding farm implements.” The new Farm Implement and Dealership Act is a blended act combining the old Farm Implement Dealerships Act and the Farm Implement Act. The two acts were combined on December 17, 2014, when Bill 6, the Statutes Amendment Act, received royal assent. Bill 6 also includes numerous changes to sections of the former Farm Implement Act. “The revised statute addresses gaps in the legislation and adds more clarity. This legislation has been around since the mid1960s and, like any good legislation, it needs to keep evolving to meet the realities we’re facing. We’ve also taken this opportunity make our Farm Implement and Dealership Act more consistent with equivalent legislation in Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Manitoba.” As the administrator for the Farm Implement and
Dealership Act, the FAO provides support to the Farm Implement Board, employs a farm implement inspector, and manages licensing for dealers and distributors. The Farm Implement Board is comprised of three farmers, three industry representatives, and one member appointed by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development. “The FAO strives to resolve complaints through the Farm Implement Inspector to help limit costs and ensure expediency for affected farmers,” said Les. “In 2013-14, the farm implement inspector spoke with approximately 240 different farmers and agri-business owners, mediated 155 disputes, and completed over 20 farm implement inspections. As a result, the Farm Implement Board did not need to review any disputes in 2013-14.” More information on these changes is available on the FAO website at www.farmersadvocate.gov.ab.ca. For details on Bill 6, go to www.assembly. ab.ca and look under “Bills and Amendments.” The new legislation will come into force in 2015, once the required amendments to the regulation are completed to align with the amended legislation. Updated copies of the Farm Implement and Dealership Act will also be available on the FAO website once they become available. For more information, contact the FAO at farmers. advocate@gov.ab.ca or at 310FARM (3276).

Inspiring Education. A very knowledgeable parent, Dr. Nhung Tran-Davies has started a petition against the implementation of Inspiring Education. I have a copy of the paper petition and am hoping once parents have researched the subject, many will sign it. I love the teachers at my daughter’s school and believe they went to University to obtain the knowledge and skills to educate our children. I don’t want just a “Guide on the side”; I want them to teach, share their knowledge and prepare our children to compete in the “Real World”! My concerns are with the system our Government and Ministry are implementing; definitely not our teachers! I’m very concerned we will lose experienced Teachers and our children will suffer. We Parents are our children’s advocates and must ensure they receive the best education possible! Please like the Facebook “Alberta Math Petition” page to stay updated on this subject. Please contact myself by text at (587-280-0771) or by email at dsberry@telus. net if you would like to sign the petition or receive additional information. Shelley Berry, concerned parent

Celebrating 90 years B. Morris Submitted On February 28, 1925, a baby girl was welcomed into the world by her parents Annie and William Andony of Mundare. Ninety year later Elsie Matviw, surrounded by her friends and family, celebrated a milestone event. The Saturday afternoon get-together at the Legion was hosted by her children, David Matviw, Mildred Saik, and Barbara Morris. David capably served as Master of Ceremonies. Elsie’s brother-in-law Henry Matviw recounted her early life as a young bride moving into the in-laws family home. Elsie and Mike soon acquired their own farming land near Mundare, then move with their young family to the Inland area where they successfully operated a mixed farm. Elsie and Mike planted the typical grain crops and raised chickens, turkeys, geese and hogs, and milked
dairy cows. Elsie planted and harvested a huge vegetable garden as well as cultivating raspberries, strawberries, and numerous other small fruits. Throughout her years in the Vegreville area, Elsie has been active in home and school activities, 4H, the National Farmers’ Union, the Vegreville Fair and the Women’s Institute. After retiring from farming, she devoted nine years of her mornings preparing snacks for the Breakfast Club when it was based in AL Horton School. Her eldest grandson, Shawn Saik, acknowledged Elsie’s hard work as an active partner in their life’s adventures. Elsie, a determined woman who doesn’t believe in giving up, still plants both a vegetable and flower garden at her Vegreville home where she lives independently. Congratulations Elsie, and may you enjoy many more healthy, happy years.
