Bittersweet farewell party for AlClub Bingo Hall much so that when the audience was waiting in line to eat, they were clapping their hands to the beat. Otherwise, the rhythm made a person want to get on their toes. Later, there were speeches and the staff presented a gift of a Stone Garden Ornament to Mel Dicks. As the association doesn’t own the building, Dicks said she wasn’t sure of the fate of the space.
Rosanne Fortier After more than 14 years, memories were held dear when AlClub Bingo Hall hosted their appreciation party. “This is a social evening with a gathering of staff and volunteers so we could show our appreciation by giving a farewell party full of food and music,” Mel Dicks, manager said of the celebration of which 150 people attended on February 27. During this time, partygoers filled the hall with chatter and laughter while Baba Jo’s kitchen prepared a feast with something for everyone to eat. Staff and volunteers also donated food for this where the meal consisted of crackers, luncheon meats, chips, cheese, grapes, vegetables and dip, ham pinwheels, wiener rolls, chicken pieces, veggie squares, pork bits, pizza turnovers, potato salad, etc. and desserts for every taste. While waiting, citizens shared their memories from the Bingo nights. Dwayne Hlady, President for VTSS stated that he started volunteering two years ago. “At first, my intentions were to get connections. You know how it is, I took the first step to volunteer over here because then I discovered groups that were available to help the organization I was involved in. If you help out people, they usually help you out too. This idea turned out to be successful. At
the same time, I really enjoyed volunteering for bingo and did this four to six times a month. I’m sure going to miss doing this.” Another volunteer spoke about a humorous tale that happened while she played bingo. “A man was quite territorial and he always sat on the same chair. One time a lady wasn’t feeling well and he could tell so he became so bothered by her suffering that he finally sat on another chair.”
Sherrie Faas, caller offered her memories also. “Well with 14 plus years, there are so many memories I don’t know how to pick one. There has been so many times when we laughed with the players and volunteers. Thank goodness, they know I loved to tease people. I broke out in “You are my Sunshine & hearing some little voices join me. I will miss them all,” Faas commented. After this, the group Country Sunshine performed. Their music energized the hall, so

Next bingo hall better hit support jackpot Please print this letter on behalf of the “regular” bingo players that kept the Al-Club open for the fourteen-plus years. A big thank you from me, as I was one of those that attended most all the bingo’s and enjoyed it. Now that it is no longer opened, we have to thank the Vegreville people for that; “not supporting their organizations.” There were about a dozen or so people from Vegreville that attended faithfully. The only time you would see the others was when the pots were high or being played off (like last weekend) out of greed. They came to try and take if from the regulars. Those
same people would drive to Edmonton to play bingo but wouldn’t support their own organizations although our monies went back into Vegreville from the bingos. We bingo regular players drove anywhere from 18-70 kilometers to attend bingo. Now we don’t have a bingo hall, staff don’t have their jobs anymore all thanks to you (you know who you are). If it ever comes about and we do get another bingo hall, please support it, not Edmonton. M MacDougall Lavoy resident
Are you guilty? This week another cat has appeared in our neighborhood. It is an orange tabby with only half a tail. At present he is up in my spruce tree hoping an unsuspecting bird will provide his dinner. Are you the guilty one who has dropped him off or disowned him once he is no longer something you want to be responsible for? Please do not think our
local animal care person gets any enjoyment out of disposing of these animals if he cannot find them a home. So to all who read this, if you can’t take care of a pet don’t have one and shame on anyone who would abandon an animal, especially in the middle of winter. Phyllis Warburton

Tax tips for Canadians over 50 - Income split and save: Seniors are allowed to split up to half of their eligible pension income with a spouse or common-law partner. Income splitting allows some seniors to enjoy a significant tax reduction. In the situation where the lower-income spouse has very little income, the tax savings are substantial. - Get your benefits: Any senior receiving Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) through Old Age Security should file on time to ensure their benefits continue uninterrupted. - Transfer amounts: If your spouse is unable to completely offset his or her age amount, pension income and disability amount against tax payable, he or she may transfer the unused portion to your return.
- Caregiver amount: If you live with your children and you are over 65, they may be able to claim a caregiver amount for you if your income is less than $18,906. - Foreign pension income: Pensions from foreign countries may be subject to special tax treatment under the terms of a tax treaty. Always check with a tax professional to find out if the pension you receive from a foreign source is taxable in Canada. - Split your CPP and save: You may be able to split part of your CPP retirement benefits with your spouse depending on how long you lived together when you were contributing to the plan. This is an advantage if one senior is in a higher tax bracket than the other. However, to do so, you must apply to
Human Resources & Social Development Canada using Form ISP-1002. It cannot be done at the time of tax preparation. - Medical expenses can add up: If you purchase medical insurance for a trip or wintering in another country, it is considered a medical expense. Medical expenses are calculated based on income so the lower income spouse should claim them And if you have to travel to obtain medical treatment that was not available where you live, you may be able to claim the cost of transportation, meals and accommodation. A tax professional at H&R Block can talk about other credits and deductions that may affect you. Brought to you by Vegreville H&R Block.

Benoit speaks with St Mary’s students Michael Simpson Staff Writer Vegreville-Wainwright MP Leon Benoit took some time on the morning of February 19 to speak to the grade 12 classes of St. Mary’s High School. He explained what his background was, gave a history leading up to his election nearly 20 years earlier. Benoit started out on a farm he bought during his last year of University. “Back then, you could still get approved for 100 per cent financing, which I was,” he told students. “In the winters I worked as an economist, setting up information sessions educating farmers and lawyers. I worked roughly the same area as my constituency is now.” Benoit said he and a friend started up the local Reform constituency, a party headed
at the time by long-time politician Preston Manning. After being a mover and shaker behind the scenes locally, Benoit said he was repeatedly encouraged to run for office, and following a conference he attended at which Manning spoke, Benoit filed papers and won his riding in 1993. Following this, he took questions from staff and students that spanned oilsands development and the future of agriculture, as well as the importance of gaining the right training to succeed after graduating high school. “With $650 billion in new projects coming to Canada, it’s important to get the right education. There’s courses at NAIT, or at Lakeland College in Vermillion that can help you,” Benoit said. He went

on to explain during question period that the protesting from environmental lobbyists over the Northern Gateway and KinderMorgan pipelines and uncertainty from the US about proposed pipelines such as the Keystone XL are poised to slow the economy down in Canada, which is in a race against time to find new access to foreign markets as the decreasing demand for Canadian oil from the US sends crude prices plummeting. Rail access to eastern and western shores, he said, is not a viable option when compared to how

much oil can be moved through a pipeline. He added that the technology used in modern pipeline construction is vastly superior to counterparts built decades ago in terms of safety and reduced environmental impact. As Chair of the Natural Resources Committee in Ottawa, Benoit informed the students about a push to exploit newer, more efficient nuclear technologies that make greater use of fission materials, including previously spent rods. Benoit said that a move towards nuclear energy as a fallback for power supply
instead of natural resources will satisfy the increasing demand in Canada’s major urban centers, as well as that of industry.

Andrew Grade 12 Students Held a Successful Pancake Supper
There was a great turnout at the Andrew Community Centre for the Pancake Supper. Many stayed & visited with friends while they waited to see who won the 50/50 draw and the many raffle prizes. The silent auction tables were a busy place as bids were checked and rechecked before bidding was called to an end.

Canola retains its spot as the top revenueproducing crop for Canadian farmers. Canola Council of Canada Submitted
Farm gate receipts for canola deliveries in 2012 were $8.1 billion in Canada,
according to estimates in Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Farm Income
Forecast released today. That is 5.4 per cent higher than the final Statistics Canada tally of $7.7 billion for canola in 2011. Wheat generated $6.3 billion in farm gate receipts in 2012. AAFC forecast total farm cash receipts for all crops at a record $29.0 billion for 2012, a 12 per cent increase over 2011. Total farm cash receipts for all livestock are estimated at $21.1 billion, a 4 per cent increase over 2011. ‘’Canola continues to lead all crops in Canada when it comes to farm gate revenue,” says Patti Miller, president of the Canola Council of Canada. “Generating $8.1 billion for growers in 2012 reflects on the power of the whole value chain. Canola’s success in the field and on the farm ripples through the Canadian economy, supporting thousands of other jobs in research, crop inputs, grain handling, exporting and processing.” The revenue increase is based on increased acres but also strong prices, which reflect strong global demand for canola products. “The world wants the healthy oil and productive animal feed that canola provides, and that means continued strong demand for Canadian canola,” Miller says.

Cougars Display Basketball Brilliance
Courtney King Student Reporter The Vegreville Composite High School Cougars hosted their annual Senior High Boys basketball tournament on the weekend of Friday February 22. On that day, the action kicked off at 1:00 in the afternoon with the Cougars facing off against the Elk Point Crusaders. The boys started their weekend off positively; beating the Crusaders sixtyseven points to thirteen. Vegreville Composite held a strong lead throughout the entire game. It proved to be a good first match, sending the boys off to Saturday’s games with an edge of confidence. The team was back in the gym at 1:30 the next day, this time with the Ashmont Falcons as their opposition. As the game proceeded, intensity rose as the score continuously bounced back and forth between the two teams. The crowd watched with antici-
pation while the boys battled, hoping to reign victorious. In an unfortunate turn of events for the Cougars, the Falcons were able to push ahead as the game progressed. After the buzzer sounded, the final score read fifty-one over
thirty-nine; Ashmont taking the victory. It was a tough loss for the Cougars to swallow as they had fought very hard through the entire game. This being said, the boys were still able to walk away from the match without shame as they had given a stellar performance. The loss against Ashmont left the Vegreville boys to play for the bronze medal at 6:45 the same evening. Acting as the rival team in this playoff match were the St. Joseph’s Saints. The game began and it became clear that both teams equally thirsted for the win. Around the court sat many parents and fans, watching as the leader of the game changed even more frequently than in the Cougars’ previous match. As the third quarter ended, the score board read twenty-five points for Vegreville and twenty-one points for St. Joseph’s. The home town team held the advantage as the fourth quarter began but the trend of quick score changes continued as the Saints began to gain momentum. With the end of the game looming, the Cougars trailed by only one point. A game as close as this required both teams to
play to their highest ability, testing their drive and stamina. The final seconds faded with the Cougars and Saints both still playing with full intensity. In a final effort, St. Joseph’s was able to hold the lead and end the game. The final score was forty-seven points for the Saints against the Cougars’ forty-three. Although the boys fell just short of a metal, they left the tournament with a strong fourth, making their school proud. After the championship match finished, the official standings showed the St. Jeromes Spartans in first, Ashmont Falcons in second and St. Joseph’s Saints with the bronze above the Vegreville boys. The tournament served as an excellent platform for the Cougars to showcase their talent before their community and test their abilities in preparation for their zone tournament at the end of the season.

World-class archer setting sights on championship in Italy
Lisa Topilko Volunteer Services Coordinator Vegreville FCSS As the coordinator of Volunteer Services at FCSS, it gives me great pleasure to introduce a local volunteer who
also happens to be a worldclass athlete. James Tracey is an expert at 3-D Archery and is on Team Canada in the Barebow Division, set to compete at the World Archery 3-D Championships in Sassari, Italy in October, 2013. What sets James apart from other athletes is that he teaches his sport to 70 local youth three nights per week (plus many weekend competitions). Yes, 70 Vegreville and area kids are benefitting from his time and talents, engaging in a sporting
activity with a great organization, the Vegreville Wildlife Federation (VWF). James works here in town for Telus, and has lived here for 2 and a-half years. He’s married to Angel and has two children, one of whom is also an archer. He has worked hard with VWF at setting up the Youth Archery Program here in Vegreville and has his sights on local youngsters earning placement at national competitions. He’s not in this just for himself; he really wants the local youth program to grow and thrive. It takes a lot of resources to get to Italy for a competition, and James has some good friends and fellow archers who are organizing a fund-raising dinner. Donations are being sought to cover expenses so that Vegreville can proudly send this athlete and community volunteer to represent us (and Alberta and Canada) at this international sporting event. Please contact me at the Volunteer Centre at FCSS to show your support for this local volunteer/athlete! 780632-3966 (volunteers@vegreville.com

Vegreville Multicultural Melodiants supplemented the Valentine’s Day treat for seniors at Vegreville Care Centre. (Rosanne Fortier/Photos) Rosanne Fortier Live and love was the theme while red and white colors flashed around the room as Nettie Charuk pushed a 101 year old resident in her wheelchair to the rhythm from the music. While later upon request, she got up to dance. This melody and vocal arrangements were performed by the Vegreville Multicultural Melodiants on February 13 at Vegreville Care Centre, where the residence was enveloped with Valentine’s Day flair. Strawberry angel food shortcake was served. The refreshments were provided by Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League from the Holy Trinity Church, where resident’s eyes shone with their first glance at this food they were served, while others tapped toes and hands to the vivacious tunes. There were vocal pieces also that had lyrics which discussed
joy, religion and ethnic culture with songs that included - My Faded Valentine, Are You Mine?, What a Friend We Have in Jesus, as well as, Ukrainian pieces. The music went on with some melodies having a relaxed, slow tempo, while others blended in a snappier sound. These performers create music at senior residences in town on an ongoing basis. One resident wanted to comment about how much he enjoyed the music. “The performances were all wonderful and I never get tired of music. I liked it so much that I want to purchase a CD. The cake was delicious too,” he said.

SEMOTIUK, Harry March 7, 2012 A tribute to a Special Man A beautiful life came to a sudden end. He died as he lived Everyone’s friend. What a precious memory He left behind. He left us so suddenly His thoughts unknown. He left us memories we are proud to own. The whispering hills of heaven echo, with the soft mellow sounds of his Bow and fiddle. Those we love remain with us. For love itself lives on. Cherished memories never fade Because a loved one’s gone Those we love can never be More than a thought apart For as long as there is memory He will live on in our hearts. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal Love leaves a memory no one can steal. Forever Remembered by: Olga, Melissa & Stephen
SHAPKA, Nick W. Sept 4, 1922 – Mar 3, 2010 Three years have passed since you left us. But still the vacant chair Recalls the love, the voice, The smile, the hugs, Of the one who once sat there. Honoring and recollecting the history of our centenary pioneers
Participants conversed with each other while they browsed their forms. Radomir Bilash was a fountain of information on the project and how users can make the most of their efforts to find out more about their ancestors. (Rosanne Fortier/Photo)
Rosanne Fortier Attendees had a glimpse into the historical past while a few participants commented, “I didn’t know that.” This happened during the presentation, Alberta-Ukraine Genealogical Project, Howto-Seminar series on February 21 at the Vegreville Centennial Library meeting room with host, Shirley Kumble, Team Leader of the Genealogy group at the library, Radomir Bilash, Project Manager and Svitlana Melnyk, Resource Associate of A lber ta-U k ra ine Genealogical Project. At this presentation, attendees received assistance in filling out the Centenary Pioneer Recognition Program 2013 Nomination Form. “This is to show people how to research their families with the intention of getting these names on the Centenary
Pioneer Recognition Monument that is at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village,” Radomir Bilash said. “Also, we’re over here to help people research their family in general. Although, most of the examples we are going to give have to do with this program. Overall, we’re over here to enhance this more than you could manage to do yourself. There will be a lot of reference to the actual nomination form.” Bilash stated. “The program itself is connected directly to the plaque that is on the monument and dedicated to all those who settled in East Central Alberta prior to the First World War this is not just for people of Ukrainian descent but for anyone who settled in this area. The program was created in 2003 and initially in terms of where it came
from; it came from yourself – your growing need to get information and your continued interest. This is now a disease that you can’t seem to stop,” Bilash explained. “People would phone and say that they were celebrating their ancestor’s 100th anniversary and they didn’t know much about their family history. They would then ask if we had any information on this. That is why we decided to have this certificate program where the names are handed out at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village. The date we’re interested in is not only when they arrived in Canada but when they settled in this region of Alberta.” Melnyk spoke next. “It’s time to speak about the process of the program. The first question you need to know if the people you are nominat-
ing settled in East Central Alberta. Did they settle over here before World War I? How do you know if your family is part of this region? This last question is a very important one and we have developed this binder which contains the names that are already on the monument. There are the Ukrainian and English versions in here. If you have any questions regarding this, please call our office and we will be willing to help you. An important question is what does East Central Alberta cover?” Melnyk went on to show the map on the projector while she commented, “Here you will see a map of the area.” Bilash continued on to explain the map. “This is a very accurate map which shows where Ukrainians settled in East Central Alberta, which was one of the largest areas for Ukrainian pioneers to settle in. The simple reason is this was a major event in world history.” Bilash went
on to give brief explanations of these historical facts relating to the pioneers and what they went through during the process of settling in the region. The evening seminar continued with more facts and assistance in understanding and filling out the form process. There were question periods and speakers provided websites that had extra content and could assist participants in their discoveries. If you were unable to attend but are interesting in this program, there will be an additional seminar on this held in
Andrew this March. You can still nominate people for the Recognition program who settled in East Central Alberta prior to 1913. You can pre-register those individuals or families who settled in the region in 1914. You can nominate extended family or neighbors or ancestral pioneers, provided you locate and submit the necessary documents. You are not required to be current residents of your ancestral homestead to participate in the program. The program expires in 2016.
