Loki and Logan are two cats who need a temporary foster home. “We are in Vegreville because we’re looking for foster homes for pets in this area and volunteers. We definitely feel there is a need” Pam Jansen, President for the CAWS said. Interested parties can e-mail admin@cawsab.org (Rosanne Fortier/Photo)
For the love of cats and dogs Rosanne Fortier Furry friends deserve TLC. On May 9, the first Vegreville Pet Expo was held at Vegreville Agricultural
Grounds and brought by Vegreville Agriculture Society. This event was utopia for animal lovers. It had displays
and information booths, and some courageous dogs too. One dog, 11 year-old Birdie, had her leg amputated in 2006. Her owner commented
that Birdie does awesome. Right after Birdie’s leg got amputated; she got up and did her thing. A table, Prairie Rose Boarding Kennels, north of Tofield and owned by Amy Porter, offers 24 hour on-site presence, grooming services and more. “We have an off-
leash area. So, dogs can go out in the yard instead of having a supervised walk. They have supervised playtime too.” Local Veterinarian, Dr. Josh Lawrence presented a seminar on the pros and cons of spaying or neutering your cat or dog. Lawrence stated that spaying and neutering prevents unwanted pregnancies and litters. “In shelters every 11 seconds, there is a dog or cat that is has to go through euthanasia.” Lawrence said. “The best time to get your pet spayed or neutered is when

Ms. Hyshka’s class aces at public speaking’ Rosanne Fortier Children learn and gain skills best when they are young. These youngsters’ love for their mothers is at its purest form. For education week on May 8, Ms. Hyshka wanted to showcase to the parents how her Grade one Ukrainian Bilingual class at A.L. Horton School was talented while she gave the students
a chance to honor their mothers for Mother’s Day. The morning kicked off with speeches presented by the Grade ones. “The Ukrainian Bilingual program really helps a child’s self-esteem because they are always performing,” Ms. Hyshka said. “The most frightful thing to do as an adult is to public speak. If you can do this, you are
destined for success. Also, I push for students to have a ‘you can do it attitude’. This attitude and people skills can take you a long way in life.” The students then read their speeches fearlessly. One child spoke about how much reading helps her brain and takes her wherever she wants to go. Other children spoke about their scooter, trip to Disneyland, a bike a boy found at an auction sale, Ukrainian dancing and how much they loved their mothers. Following this, the students read the poems with confidence that they created for their mothers. Then with a lot of action and expression, the children performed, Spaghetti, Spaghetti which was a Speech Arts performance that earned them the highest award at the Wendy Brook Festival. They continued with a Ukrainian
song. The children read the books they made for their mothers and after all this entertainment, everyone celebrated with hot-dogs and pizza.

VegMin is Celebrating a Milestone Name: Emily Sorachan Likes: crafts, puzzles Dislikes: bossy people, snow
VegMin Learning Submitted On June 11, 2015, VegMin Learning Society is having a party. They are celebrating a milestone of “40 Years of Learning” in the Town of Vegreville & the County of Minburn. Holly Cependa, Executive Director said “There have been many changes in the past 40 years – hosting, locations, program guidelines, community needs and people. As we look back through our archives, we have found there are a few gaps. We don’t have much information prior to 1995. If there is anyone out there that might be able to help us fill in those gaps we would be extremely grateful.”
Cependa went on to say, “ We are trying to locate as many past, and present Learners, Tutors, Instructors, Volunteers, General Members, Governance Board Members and Supporters to encourage them come out and help us celebrate. If it weren’t for them, we wouldn’t be here to celebrate! This FREE event is going to be held at the Rotary Peace Park with a short program and a catered meal. The event committee will be finalizing the details on a celebration you won’t want to miss.” For those interested, they can keep up-to-date via VegMin’s website and/or newsletters and their FaceBook and twitter accounts.

The Sizzlin’ Summer program gives kids so many opportunities to learn, grow, discover and develop. It’s a great program. We hope to make this community garage sale an annual event. The community is very generous.” Royal LePage Homewise Realty generated $1,444.65 from their Community Fundraising Garage Sale
on April 25. These funds will be used for FCSS Sizzlin’ Summer Day Camp which provides programming for children from six to 11 years old. This program runs during the summer months and offers games and different developmental activities. “We are really thankful and excited to receive these funds. they are from four to six months of age.” “There are medical benefits to this; the females will eliminate their chances of breast cancer by 90% if they’re spayed prior to their first heat cycle. Other types of cancers, diseases or conditions in dogs and cats can be stopped too. We can also reduce fighting, roaming and spraying in males.” Lawrence added. The cons are weight gain in pets which could have a hormonal influence but at the end of the day, calories in and out are what matters, Lawrence said. “People are worried their dog won’t have male characteristics but there is no study that proves that neutering
will reduce muscles or growth in pets.” Lawrence stated, adding the same information applied to spaying female pets. “But urinary incontinence can happen; we have medicine to reduce this. Spaying and neutering can lead to avoiding certain types of cancer. Then there is a short-term cost that will save you with long-term gain.” Lawrence said. The CAWS, Companion Animal Welfare Society which is based in Edmonton/ Sherwood Park held a booth which sold baked goods, DVDs and cat beds to raise money for the CAWS. “We
provide temporary housing for pets whose families are in transition; women who are f leeing domestic violence. While animals are in our care, we provide veterinarian care, spaying or neutering, food and everything the pet needs. We also do military respite where we take care of members of the Canadian Military’s pets while they are away training or deployed, medical respite for a person who has to go in for surgery, or any disaster situation,” Pam Jansen President for the CAWS said. “We are in Vegreville because we’re looking for foster homes for pets

Horsing around at the vet clinic
Rachel Farr Project leader March 21 the Vegreville 4h multi club horse project group took a trip to the vet clinic. No, not because of a sick horse, we went to Uncas Vet clinic for a fun learning day. The wonderful staff at Uncas vet clinic showed the kids around to multiple stations. First was the Microscope station where they got to seem worms. Then a bandage station, where kids got to wrap up their parents in bandages and vet wrap and trot them around the clinic to make sure the bandage wouldn’t fall off. At the X-ray station the kids got to look at lots of different animals X-rays and tell the staff what it was they were seeing. The scope-camera station was where they got to look up a horse’s nose. (I know sounds gross, but it was pretty cool) The ultrasound station was where they got to see a fetus. The favorite station for all was the horse surgery table. The kids were air lifted one chamber at a time to reach the perfect height for surgery, and then quickly took a ride down as it was deflated. Throughout the day the clinic staff would quiz the kids with what they learned and reward them with candy. (They were on a sugar high all the way home). It was great for the kids to see a vet clinic for horses it gave them a better understanding of how everything works.

Ask the Guys Dear Classified Guys, I am one of five administrative managers in the same secretary pool. We all switch around when someone is on vacation, traveling on business or a department needs additional help. All of us have been here for at least seven years and get along very well. Just recently one woman left to start a family and Annette was hired to fill the position. She is nice and like her predecessor, gets along with everyone. She is always professional and courteous and her attire is within the dress code, but her style, in my opinion, is a bit too risqué for the office. There is no sexual harassment or anything like that, but I think the attention she draws is causing others to disrespect us as a group. I can't put my finger on it, but it's the looks I see people giving her and the whispering that sometimes occurs when one of us enters the room. Since I plan on staying with this company, should I say something about her attire or just hope it passes.

lucky our wives let us pick out our own outfits! Cash: Your situation sounds more like a high school than a professional environment. Although you probably didn't plan it, it seems the five of you formed a clique in the office and now with a new co-worker in the mix, things are not quite the same anymore. Carry: However, unlike high school, everyone here is a grownup and an employee of a company. That means you need to act accordingly and work together within your group. Cash: Keep in mind that dress styles are often subjective. One person's "inappropriate" may be perfectly fine to another. Carry: Since Annette is still
new, give her some time to adjust to the job. She may be dressing up, hoping to impress and fit in or it may just be her style. In either case, it's best to focus more on the job and less on her outfits. Cash: And until someone actually says something to you about your group or performance, just ignore the whispers. People love to gossip at the office. When the uniqueness of the new person wears off, they'll probably just find something else to whisper about. Carry: Besides, you never know how long Annette will stay in your pool. She may swim to another company or worse, be promoted and become your boss! •

Fast Facts Electronic Gossip
Reader Humor Here's a Tip
Today's technology makes it easier than ever to spread important information. Unfortunately, it makes it easier than ever to share gossip as well. And the office environment is no exception. Before you click 'send' on the latest office rumor, consider this. A recent survey found that 60% of workers say office gossip is their number one pet peeve and annoyance at the workplace. So while many people use rumors and gossip as a bonding experience, remember that the next time somebody clicks 'send', it could be about you!
My husband, Burt, believes that hard work gets rewarded. To celebrate our anniversary, he dressed up in a formal tuxedo and took me to a very fine restaurant, where coincidently his company president was having dinner as well. As we walked to our table, the president held up a hand and waved my husband over. Thinking he was finally noticed for his ten years of hard work, Burt went over to their table. Minutes later he returned embarrassed and told me that the president mistook him for the waiter and asked for a martini. "Oh my goodness," I laughed. "What did you say?" "What could I say?" my husband shrugged. "I asked if he wanted it shaken or stirred?" (Thanks to Janet Y.)
Shirts & Ties It seems wearing "business-casual" is on the rise. A survey by an online job site found that 78% of executives prefer to dress in casual clothing at the office. Dressing relaxed can lead people to conclude you're more creative or more fun. Unfortunately, it can also cause people to take you less seriously according to the survey. And as it turns out, "suiting-up" or wearing conventional business attire can have its advantage. About 70% of those who dress for success are perceived to be at a more senior level and 60% are taken more seriously.

Praise for PALS in Mundare My family has been a member of the Vegreville community for about six years. This last fall my youngest child was given the opportunity to attend the early learning intervention program PALS, Play and Learn at School in Mundare School. My child has some developmental delays, and as parents, my husband and I were very concerned that he would not be ready for kindergarten when the time came. As this program is not available in Vegreville, we made the decision to drive him in twice a week to attend this program. This has turned out to be a one of the best decisions we have made. Last May our child was only saying the odd word, and now he is talking in sentences! The program runs 2 full instructional days a week with additional family-oriented programming once or twice a month. In addition to a great curriculum, the children receive physical education in the school’s gym, instruction with the school’s music teacher, access to the schools playgrounds, and weekly assistance from speech and occupational therapists. Our child has gone from barely talking to singing non-stop. Without this opportunity we never would have discovered his love of music. We also participate in family-oriented programming. This can be a number of different things; gross motor activities with the physical therapist, learning centers with the occupational or speech therapists, yoga, nature hunts, splatter art, and so much more. This gives us the opportunities as parents to learn how
assist our child’s development. Plus we get to spend quality time with our children and meet the other families. Best of all was the people. The staff has been exceptional. We are always greeted with smiles and open arms. I love the enthusiasm the teacher and educational assistants have. Every activity is presented
with such eagerness and obstacles are looked at as an opportunity to learn and improve. I have no doubt when I walk out of the classroom that my child will be treated kindly and with respect, but best of all, with love. Thanks to the PALS program I am sure my child will be ready for kindergarten this fall. Even though
some developmental assistance will still be required, I am sure he now has the foundation to be successful in school. These types of initiatives make a huge impact on an individual’s life, but also on the future of a community as a whole. Sincerely, Brenda Forbes

CYMBALUK In Loving Memory of Victor Cymbaluk I feel warmth around me like your presence is so near, I often close my eyes to see your face when you were here, I miss our life together forever locked inside my heart, For as long as I have memories we’ll never be apart. Even though we cannot speak again my voice is always there, As each night before I go to bed I have you in my prayer. Love and miss you, Emily CYMBALUK, Victor Dad, We thought of you today, But that is nothing new. We thought about you yesterday, And days before that too. We think of you in silence, And male no outward show. For what it meant to lose you, Only those who love you know. Your memory is our keepsake, With which we’ll never part. God has you in his keeping, We have you in our heart. Love Curtis, Debra, Rick, Joanne and families

Fiddlin’ Kiddlins’ 17th annual concert FASEK In memory of our wife, sister, mother, grandmother Geraldine Fasek who passed away on May 19, 2009. He put his arms around you, And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. He knew you were suffering, He knew you were in pain, He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough, And the hills were hard to climb, So he closed your weary eyelids, And whispered “Peace Be Thine.” It broke our hearts to lose you. But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God called you home. Forever missed by: William, Nick and Sandra Fasek; Todd, Linda, Jasmine and Diesel Fenske

It’s always a delight to see the youngest set of performers at the Fiddlin’ Kiddlins’ events. A full hall of citizens issued cheers and an appreciative applause after each performance. (Rosanne Fortier/Photo)
Rosanne Fortier The show did go on! Fiddle music matches the colors of life in all its variety. The Fiddlin’ Kiddlins’ 17th annual concert, Up to the Highlands, presented playful and thoughtful tunes at the Elk’s Hall on May 3. This concert was held in honor of Fiddlin’
Kiddlin founder, the late Heather Soldan. The 15 performers who ranged in age from 6-20 years old confidently showcased their talents to a full hall of citizens who issued cheers and an appreciative applause after each performance. There was a special thank-
you offered to Callina Kirk, Director and instructor. It was noted that she did an amazing job. Kirk mentioned in an interview in January that she is delighted and blessed with all the assistance the parents and community gave her in this journey of continuing on Fiddlin’ Kiddlins.
Mundare community garage sale
Garage Sales hold the mystery of merchandise. On May 2, Mundare held their annual town-wide garage sale with more than 40 sales available to explore. Despite moments of frozen ice pellets and rain, toques and snowmobiles suits were not necessary as many shoppers of all ages rushed out to explore these sales and the town in general. Andrew School Submitted
On April 16th, close to one hundred guests enjoyed an evening of fine dining and comedic entertainment when the Village of Andrew Family & Community Support Services (FCSS) and the Andrew School Drama class teamed up to present ‘10 Ways To Survive the Zombie Apocalypse’ written by Don Zolidis. A delicious meal of salad, chicken cordon bleu, roasted potatoes, seasonal vegetables, and amazing desserts where prepared by Elke Carr and Charlene Shulko along with their hardworking team of volunteers. Andrew School students seated guests,
served the meal, and cleared tables during the event. Once everyone’s hunger was satisfied, principal Daniel Verhoeff and drama teac her, A ngel a Christensen, introduced the ‘living’ characters in the performance, describing their virtues and failings to the audience. Hosts Bobbie-jo Rougecou (played by Alisha Donovan) and Shaniquoi Latina Hilton (played by Megan Halisky) described each of the 10 scenarios where the humans played by Devon Hamaliuk, Breck Hrehorets, Tyra Shulko & Jayla Snyder try to survive the onslaught of zombies played by Keara Lamb, Austin Fillion,
Jessica Goddu, Jared Perepeletza & David Swyers. What would your plan be for surviving the zombie apocalypse? Sacrificing the weak, using your Kung Fu skills to fend them off, or trying to reason with the undead were just some of the ridiculous suggestions presented during the comedy. Our gratitude goes out to everyone involved with the evening including our stagehands and servers Emi ly Slasy nsk i, Cassandra Ostashek, Eric Little, Geoffrey Bryks, Alyshia Bryks, Hope Boster, Addison Ng, Matthew Melnyk, Brandon Wipf, Gage Pritchard & Colby
Yaremie. We hope everyone enjoyed their evening and we look forward to your presence at our next Andrew School Dinner Theatre!
