who play for the Millwoods Selects U14 Tier 3 team, met with some tough competition but managed to come out victorious. Stefanie, who is the keeper, is in her third season with the team and Tianna just

joined the team this spring making a great addition to the team’s offence. The team is coached by Wilfred Streets and his new assistant coach Sam Streets. Pictured are Stefanie and Tianna with their team.

Wendy Brook – another season and some changes Wendy Brook MFA Submitted The Wendy Brook Music Festival season finale has, for the last six years, been a short concert given at one or the other of the seniors’ residences to celebrate the performers who receive bursaries. This year’s concert was held at Heritage House on Thursday, April 30. The performances included fiddle, guitar, ukulele, piano and of course vocals. Each of the performers was presented with a bursary to be used at a music camp. Some of the sponsors of the bursaries were on hand to present the bursaries. The accompanying picture shows the performers and the presenters. Li Giebelhaus presented her

bursary to Barbara Rybchuk, Terry Kubin gave the Woodwynn Farm bursary to Bailey Stefan. Malachi Barter received the Heather Soldan Memorial from Allan Soldan. The Derek Fox Financial bursary was presented to Jennifer de Forest. The Lions Club bursary was presented to April Siggelkow. Shade Clark received the Leola Nawrot bursary. Viola Braun Fox’s bursary went to Owen Pasay. Perogies & Jam and Wendy Brook Festival bursaries were presented to Julia and Brooklynn Doljesi, Callina Kirk, Cassidy and Brett Zahar. Wendy Brook Festival bursaries are supported by the community in the general donations to the festival.

These bursaries will be used for registration at the Banff Band Music Retreat, MusiCamp Alberta, Camp Calvin (Calvin Vollrath’s Music Camp), Gleek Out! (Young Singers of Calgary), the Calgary Arts Summer School Piano Camp and the Ukrainian Music Workshop. Now, about changes to come. Some time ago, at the Festival Concert on April 9, Caroline Knowles announced her retirement after 15 years as Chairperson and asked for help in refreshing the Board of the Wendy Brook Festival. A week later a number of people answered the call and attended a meeting to form the ongoing festival board. While not all the attendees were in a position to become

Left to right: Allan Soldan, Li Giebelhaus Terry Kubin, Caroline Knowles, Barbara Rybchuk, April Siggelkow, Julia Doljesi, Bailey Stefan, Malachi Barter, Brooklynn Doljesi, Brett Zahar, Shade Clark, Cassidy Zahar,Viola Braun Fox. (Photo Submitted)

full board members all expressed their intention to help with the festival. The attendees at that meeting were: Anna Tomyn, chairperson elect, Lynette Massey, Vice-chair elect, Shawna Semeniuk, who will take over the catering function, Debra Fedoruk, Annette Schieck, Janet Rowlands, Sian Vadnais. Also expressing support, but unable to attend were Brendan Barkwell and Brandy Stefan.

Returning to the board is Irene Bowen. Members of the board who are continuing in their positions are Viola Braun Fox, scheduling, Norma Cowan, fundraising, Pat Dobush, treasurer with Colette Miller, Terry Kubin, recording secretary and venues, and Marielle Brodziak, director. For the present members of the Board it was a very encouraging and energizing

show of support for the Festival. The official start for the new board will be in September at the AGM. As is the nature of things there have a number changes in the Festival over the last fifteen years. Perhaps the first of the changes was for the festival to become a charitable organization and thus able to give receipts for tax deduction purposes. While the Vegreville community has always supported the festival even without the tax deduction, this was a welcome change for donors. From the start of the festival there were funds set aside or designated for two bursaries. At first these were specifically for MusiCamrose, a summer music program for bands, choirs and solo performers, which is now MusiCamp Alberta at Red Deer College. Presently, thanks to the generosity of the community and several special donors, as many as a dozen bursaries a year are presented to performers in each season’s festival. The bursary concert described above is the most recent innovation of the Festival Board. Several years ago, the Festival Board decided to present a workshop each February. Originally this workshop was organized as an aid to those who were planning to enter the Vocals classes in the Festival. But over time the workshop has branched out to include Theatre Improv and Musical Theatre, all of which have been very well received. So the Wendy Brook Music Festival continues to grow and evolve.

More benefits and services for veterans Leon Benoit Submitted Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for Vegreville-Wainwright, was very pleased to see further support for veterans. Earlier this month the Minister of Veter a n s Affairs unveiled the proposed new Critical Injury Benefit (CIB) as well as a plan to boost Veterans’ access to case managers. The CIB will provide a $70,000 tax-free award to support the most severely injured and ill Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members and Veterans. It is intended to address the immediate impacts of the most severe and traumatic service-related injuries or diseases sustained by CAF members and Veterans, between the time the injury or disease occurs and the time when their condition becomes medically stable. The CIB recognizes the stress and hardship CAF members and Veterans go through in the weeks and months following a traumatic injury or disease. The CIB is intended to work alongside the existing benef its and supports delivered by Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) for which injured Veterans are eligible, and is separate from disability award payments. This announcement was one element of the new Support for Veterans and their Families Act. Along with the Critical Injury Benef it, other proposed initiatives in this new legislation include: -the Retirement Income Security Benef it for moderately to severely disabled Veterans beginning at age 65 and their survivors; - the Family Caregiver Relief Benefit for eligible Veterans requiring ongoing informal care— a tax-free grant of $7,238 annually; - the addition of a purpose statement to the New Veterans Charter recognizing t he Government’s obligation to CAF members, Veterans and their families; and - the authority for

Veterans Affairs Canada to provide advice and information to CAF members and Veterans, and make decisions on applications for benefits and services prior to their release from the military to help them successfully transition to civilian life. Additionally, the Minister announced that VAC will deliver on its service excellence commitment by reducing caseloads to an average of 30 Veterans for each VAC case manager and will hire more than 100 permanent case managers in order to provide improved oneon-one service. VAC frontline employees will work in locations where they are needed the most. “By increasing the number of case managers, workloads will be balanced, allowing case managers to dedicate

more time and attention to meeting the individual needs of Veterans,” explained Benoit. VAC will continue to work with DND to access medical records as quickly as possible in order to reduce the amount of time Veterans wait for decisions on disability benefit applications. “These changes will provide immediate recognition and compensa-

tion to CAF members and Veterans who have made a tremendous personal sacrifice, and will provide them with security and peace of mind following a critical injury or illness,” stated Benoit. “We will continue to support Canada’s Veterans and their families and ensure the changing nature of their needs are met with the best possible service.”

Rosanne Fortier The finest treasures can be a few steps away. On April 18, Citizens had a chance to purchase a novel item locally. The 11th annual Spring Home Business Trade Show at Vegreville Centennial Library helped shoppers commend their mothers on Mother’s Day with an original gift. This sale held 35 vendors and 45 tables with sandals, leggings, clothing, health products, books, beauty products, scent items, jewelry, pet items and household items. Sandi Lecky said that she is happy to be a vendor at this sale because her products-

Gold Canyon candles always sell well. “We sell flame and flameless candles that give out various scents. I believe the flameless ones are safer to use with small children around. They have automatic timers and you just have to plug them in. One fragrance will cover an entire household. We have many varieties including carrot cake, fudge brownie, fresh orange, fresh homemade bread and even ones to eliminate fish odor or give a fresh linen smell. For instance, the brownie one will make your home smell like you’re cooking brownies all day.” Jennifer Hladilo, Sale

Organizer, created cat beds and toys. She made sure to buy organic cat-nip for the toys. “I have been making these for 10 years. I love to sew. The cat beds are machine washable and dryer safe. They are well-received. Dogs and cats really enjoy these beds. Almost everyone who buys one sends me a picture of their pet lying on it.” Sylvia Westaway from Mundare was the vendor for P&P Dog Treats which stands for pumpkin and parsley, two of the ingredients in them. “I just started making these from a recipe. My dog really enjoyed eating them.” Sylvia said.

Vegreville floor curling takes second in spring bonspiel

On April 22nd Vegreville Sunshine Club hosted a bonspiel of 20 teams. There were 5 local teams. Ardrossan’s Ray Gartner took 1st place. VNellie Labatiuk’s Vegreville team took 2nd. Gloria Mazurkewich from Sherwood Park took 3rd. Two other teams split 4th prize. We all enjoyed the day and thanks to the cook for a great meal. By the way, this was a regular floor curling bonspiel. Ask the Guys Dear Classified Guys, I am one of five administrative managers in the same secretary pool. We all switch around when someone is on vacation, traveling on business or a department needs additional help. All of us have been here for at least seven years and get along very well. Just recently one woman left to start a family and Annette was hired to fill the position. She is nice and like her predecessor, gets along with everyone. She is always professional and courteous and her attire is within the dress code, but her style, in my opinion, is a bit too risqué for the office. There is no sexual harassment or anything like that, but I think the attention she draws is causing others to disrespect us as a group. I can't put my finger on it, but it's the looks I see people giving her and the whispering that sometimes occurs when one of us enters the room. Since I plan on staying with this company, should I say something about her attire or just hope it passes.

questions about fashion. We're

lucky our wives let us pick out our own outfits! Cash: Your situation sounds more like a high school than a professional environment. Although you probably didn't plan it, it seems the five of you formed a clique in the office and now with a new co-worker in the mix, things are not quite the same anymore. Carry: However, unlike high school, everyone here is a grownup and an employee of a company. That means you need to act accordingly and work together within your group. Cash: Keep in mind that dress styles are often subjective. One person's "inappropriate" may be perfectly fine to another. Carry: Since Annette is still

new, give her some time to adjust to the job. She may be dressing up, hoping to impress and fit in or it may just be her style. In either case, it's best to focus more on the job and less on her outfits. Cash: And until someone actually says something to you about your group or performance, just ignore the whispers. People love to gossip at the office. When the uniqueness of the new person wears off, they'll probably just find something else to whisper about. Carry: Besides, you never know how long Annette will stay in your pool. She may swim to another company or worse, be promoted and become your boss! •

Fast Facts Electronic Gossip

Reader Humor Here's a Tip

Today's technology makes it easier than ever to spread important information. Unfortunately, it makes it easier than ever to share gossip as well. And the office environment is no exception. Before you click 'send' on the latest office rumor, consider this. A recent survey found that 60% of workers say office gossip is their number one pet peeve and annoyance at the workplace. So while many people use rumors and gossip as a bonding experience, remember that the next time somebody clicks 'send', it could be about you!

My husband, Burt, believes that hard work gets rewarded. To celebrate our anniversary, he dressed up in a formal tuxedo and took me to a very fine restaurant, where coincidently his company president was having dinner as well. As we walked to our table, the president held up a hand and waved my husband over. Thinking he was finally noticed for his ten years of hard work, Burt went over to their table. Minutes later he returned embarrassed and told me that the president mistook him for the waiter and asked for a martini. "Oh my goodness," I laughed. "What did you say?" "What could I say?" my husband shrugged. "I asked if he wanted it shaken or stirred?" (Thanks to Janet Y.)

Shirts & Ties It seems wearing "business-casual" is on the rise. A survey by an online job site found that 78% of executives prefer to dress in casual clothing at the office. Dressing relaxed can lead people to conclude you're more creative or more fun. Unfortunately, it can also cause people to take you less seriously according to the survey. And as it turns out, "suiting-up" or wearing conventional business attire can have its advantage. About 70% of those who dress for success are perceived to be at a more senior level and 60% are taken more seriously.

A crowd of citizens journeyed to purchase something to honor their mothers at Spring into May and Mother’s Day Home Business and Craft Trade Show with 44 vendors at Vegreville Centennial Librar y. Nicole Basarabowich was the organizer. This sale included door prizes and a kids’ corner. “We have this sale to offer unique items locally that a person might not be able to buy in a store. All the proceeds from the door prize donation will go towards the Grade 11 Wildlife class in Smoky Lake for a f ly-in fishing trip which will give these kids a fun, good and new experience. It’s a way to bring the community together t o o .” Basarabowich said. Shauna McMinis, Independent Sa les Director, and Shannon Kerr, vendor for Mary Kay, were excited to be selling their products with a charitable twist. “The Mary Kay Ash Foundation raises money throughout the year and they give back to one women’s shelter in each province $20,000 every year. If there’s a shelter you want to nominate, you can do this by contacting the head office. They have a feel-good program for women that go into hospitals for cancer and show them how to wear make-up or wigs. This is because when you look good, you feel better,” McMinis said. Vendor Connie Barnes had a table selling girl accessories that moms might buy for their little ones, Mothers Day or not. “I started this company, Jam Girlz Boutique for my daughter who has Down’s-Syndrome because I want to bring

When my daughter gets older she can take over this company and have something of her own.” Connie Barnes said. “I make the tutus and hair-bows and I sell hats, baby bloomers, masks and we have dresses from the movieFrozen.” Sherri’s Handmade Crochet Creations was the booth with handmade items by Sherri Andriashyk who lives in Vegreville and admitted that the community is really supported. The table held pot scrubbies, soap savers, face scrubbies, coffee cozies for your coffee cup, dish cloths, adult and child

slouchy beanies which are crochet hats. Sherri’s husband, Lindsey Holmes is her moral supporter who helps Sherri sell these products. “Sherri has a real passion for creating these items. She learned to crochet on her own. I work long hours and I learned how to crochet too so I do it with her. It gives us time together,” Lindsey said. “I stay at home with my two sons and I am doing really well with this business. There is always something new to learn and it’s a good experience for multi-generations to participate in.” Sherri said.
