United Conservative Party, (UCP) candidate Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk was successful in her re-election bid earning a total of 14,616 votes in the May 29 election. She won by 5,175 votes over her nearest competitor New Democratic Party, (NDP) candidate Taneen Rudyk, who garnered 9,441 votes.
Rounding out the candidates were: Kathy Flett, Independence Party of Alberta, Kelley Zeleny, Advantage Party of Alberta and Granny Margaret MacKay, Solidarity Movement of Alberta. The vote count was 823 for Flett, 239 for Zeleny and 112 for MacKay.
Armstrong-Homeniuk commented by saying, “The constituents of Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville have spoken and have chosen to continue to move Alberta forward.
Over the course of the campaign, my team and I knocked on over 16,000 doors and we heard time and again that Albertan’s didn’t want to go back, and the election results reflect this.
I am very grateful and proud that the constituents and communities of Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville have once again placed their trust in me to continue to represent them and I will continue to work hard to do so.
I would like to thank my team for their dedication and hard work in ensuring that Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville stayed blue.”
Armstrong-Homeniuk took to Facebook May 30 to thank the residents of Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville for placing their trust in her. Armstrong-Homeniuk wrote, “It is an honour to be re-elected as your MLA and to represent you and this amazing constituency. I am committed to working tirelessly on your behalf and together, we will continue to move forward, building stronger and prosperous communities.”
She also expressed her gratitude to her opponents Taneen Rudyk, Kathy Flett, Kelly Zeleny, and Granny Margaret Mackay for putting their names forward and engaging in a spirited campaign. “I extend my respect and admiration to each of you for your dedication to public service and offering your vision for Fort Saskatchewan/ Vegreville.
Congratulations to my United Conservative Party of Alberta colleagues who were elected. To those who were not, it has been a privilege to work with you, you have an unwavering dedication to this great province.“
According to the unofficial results, the UCP won 49 seats while the NDP won 38 seats. Provincially, a total of 1,763,441 valid votes were cast with turnout of 62.39 percent. Results will not become official until June 8.
