Smile of the
WEEK
“It’s Just What I Do!” Lisa Topilko Volunteer Services Coordinator, Vegreville & District FCSS When it comes to parents helping out with their children’s activities, this is the phrase we hear often: “It’s just what I do.” Parents want their offspring to be involved in extra-curricular programs: sports, dancing, and clubs. Most of these activities are run by volunteers and, in our town, parent volunteers. They do it all: fundraising, grant proposals, renovations to facilities, meetings, budgets, phoning, carpooling, coaching, scheduling, and the list goes on. There are about 55 organizations that provide out-of-school programs or events for local children; an astonishing number! “It’s just what I do.” Parents know that children who are involved in community activities are being positively stimulated. Young brains and bodies are growing and developing, and every experience has an impact. Youngsters need to be active in the community as they mature so that they can develop: -Social Competence -Physical Health and Well-being -Emotional Maturity -Language and Thinking skills, and -Communication Skills and General Knowledge. My own children knew that, wherever they went in our small town, somebody knew them and was looking out for their best interests. They could always get help, if needed, and
they knew that our house would receive a phone call if they had made questionable choices. For all the right reasons, parents and community members take ownership of the non-profit organizations that provide activities for children and youth. And often, things go well and the organization thrives. The wisest leaders of these non-profit groups are the ones who seek help in the right places, and invest time to learn about what works best and how the group can grow and be strong. Volunteer groups need to be organized and ready to be flexible and creative in receiving volunteers who have busy work lives and multiple children in many activities. Parent volunteers in local groups need to know exactly what they are signing up for when someone asks them to help out. And if they have an enjoyable volunteer experience, they will be more likely to offer to help out again. Your local volunteer centre (Volunteer Vegreville at FCSS) is able to assist local organizations be the best they can be as they recruit, train, recognize and keep their volunteers. We hope that parents continue to willingly run extra-curricular programs and that they continue to say, “It’s just what I do.” This is what makes our community thrive and makes this a great place for children and families!

‘Inspiring’ mandate delivered at Andrew School Andrew School Submitted On April 7th Andrew School hosted a parent information & kindergarten registration night. Parents and community members were invited to attend this evening event on the current research and direction in education taking place in the very near future. The evening began with a delicious free barbecue supper prepared by
school staff. Four and five year-olds, along with their parents, proceeded to the kindergarten classroom to meet the teaching staff and prepare for their entrance to kindergarten in the fall. Principal, Daniel Verhoeff, and assistant principal, TJ Kennerd, opened up the formal part of the evening with the introduction of Alberta Education Deputy Minister, Greg Bass. Bass presented the new ‘Inspiring

Education’ mandate and the changes this will mean to students and the Alberta curriculum. Next up was Constable Mitchell Coffin of the RCMP Integrated Child Exploitation (I.C.E.) Unit. His presentation focused on how parents can keep their children safe online and offline. Predators are out there and wait for any small opportunity to form a relationship with an innocent child. Coffin stressed that if any parent has a concern that their child is being bullied or coerced online to contact the RCMP immediately. Next up was Peter Baron of Elk Island Public Schools Instructional Services who gave an outline of what EIPS already has in place to align with the ‘Inspiring Education’ mandate and the plans for the 2014-2015 school year. An opportunity was given to ask questions of all three speakers and discuss the information presented. As the presentation grew late it was decided to reschedule the last two items of the evening for another date. Presentations will be made to Andrew School Parent Council in regards to the changes coming for the 2014-2015 school year and the introduction of the high school flex project. Jeff Spady, Salisbury Composite Assistant Principal, will return to give his presentation on current research in brain development and plasticity with links to educational practices and how this aligns with the new ‘Inspiring Education’ mandate. To learn more about ‘Inspiring Education’ go to https://education.alberta. ca/department/ipr/inspiringeducation.aspx. This is a work in progress but the opportunity is here now for parents and community members to become enlightened to the future of Alberta education.

Record Cattle Prices Spark Increased Demand for Livestock Price Insurance AFSC Submitted Higher Prices Bring Higher Risk, Says Market Analyst As Alberta’s Livestock Price
Insurance Program expands across Western Canada this month, demand for price insurance in Alberta is growing as cattle producers in the
County of Minburn and across the province witness cattle prices that have been hitting record highs over the last few months. “Cattle producers are experiencing some of the strongest prices in history on their cattle, and they don’t want to risk losing that money if prices fall for some reason. That’s why so many Alberta producers are using price insurance to protect the high cattle prices they’re seeing today. Participation in cattle price insurance has tripled in Alberta over the last year because it gives producers an Alberta f loor price that locks in up to 95 per cent of
the future forecasted price on their cattle. And it doesn’t put a ceiling on the price they can sell their cattle for if markets keep climbing,” explains Brenda Hagen, with Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) – the provincial Crown corporation that has administered livestock price insurance since the program was first unveiled in Alberta five years ago. No Program Changes in Alberta as WLPIP Expands Across West Now renamed the Western Livestock Price Insurance Program (WLPIP), Hagen
Brenda Hagen, with AFSC, says high cattle prices have sparked growing demand for Livestock Price Insurance in Alberta. As the program expands across Western Canada, she reminds producers of the May 29 deadline for WCPIP-Calf policies this year. (Photo Supplied) says the success and uptake of price insurance in Alberta was a major factor in the decision to expand it across Western Canada this spring. AFSC will now deliver the program – which has only been available in Alberta – to cattle and hog producers across the West on behalf of the federal and provincial governments. As WLPIP rolls out across the region, there will be no changes to the program in Alberta, says Hagen. “Other than a new logo and website at www. wlpip.ca, it’s the same program Alberta producers have used for years to protect themselves from any risk that could cause these high cattle prices to drop below their insured f loor price,” she says, noting, “We’re adding settlement indexes and coverage levels for the other provinces, but coverage and settlement prices in Alberta will still be based on the Alberta cattle market.” Cattle Prices Jumped 20 Per Cent The expansion of WLPIP comes at a good time, says Brian Perillat, a senior Alberta cattle market analyst with
Canfax. Cattle prices have jumped about 20 per cent over the last four months – and those higher prices bring higher risk, says Perillat, especially for feedlots and backgrounders that buy high-priced calves and feeder cattle to place on feed or pasture. “Those producers have more money on the table than ever before. And with the increased market volatility that often comes with high prices, producers could easily lose a lot more money a lot faster if they’re not using tools like price insurance in today’s markets,” he explains. Unexpected Risks And while there’s every indication today’s strong prices will continue through 2014 – due to tight cattle supplies in Canada and the U.S., a weak Canadian dollar, and low feed costs – there are always unexpected risks that can come out of nowhere and change that picture, says Perillat. “For example, the Canadian dollar can be extremely volatile and negatively impact cattle prices. Or if there’s a drought or some other weather concern that results in a small U.S. grain crop, that could reduce cattle prices this year,” explains Perillat. “There’s too much at stake not to protect the high prices we’re seeing today with price insurance. That’s why we actively promote WLPIP to our members,” says Reg Schmidt, with the Feeder Associations of Alberta (FAA), an industry group that sat on the steering committee that developed livestock price insurance in Alberta. The FAA helps producers finance feeder cattle purchases through a Loan Guarantee Program. “We also finance WLPIP premiums See Story.......................... Page 17

LAKUSTA, Sylvester Nov 16, 1940- May 9, 2013 Broken is the family circle; Our dear one is passed away. Passed from earth and earthy darkness Into bright and perfect day. But we all must cease to languish O’er the grave of him we love; Strive to be prepared to meet him In the better world above. Lovingly remembered by wife Margaret, children Lorne, Effie, Lori and Mark, Grandchildren; Lyle, Larissa, Jonathan, Bradley and Hannah. RATTRAY, SARAH JANE AUG 28, 1921- MAY 3, 1992 In Loving Memory Today life unfolds another year Of the day you left us so suddenly No farewells were spoken We didn’t have time to say goodbye Our family circle was broken No one can ever mend that chain So in our hearts we keep you near By all the memories we have Of the one we loved so much Your smile is gone forever And your hand we cannot touch For the ones we love never go away You walk beside us everyday Unheard, unseen but always near You walk with us in sunlight And are in our dreams at night We feel your presence in the breeze That dances gently through the trees So our thoughts are always with you No one can take your place You were so very special Mom What more can we say Except to wish with all our hearts That you could be with us today You are forever in our hearts Lovingly remembered and missed very much by your Children, Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren.
HODGINS, DOUGLAS NEIL April 14, 1957- May 10, 2013 No farewell words were spoken, No time to say goodbye, You were gone before we knew it, And only God knows why. Rosanne Fortier There is a way to have our life live on in the hearts and memories of our loved ones. May 3 is National S c r apb o ok i n g D ay. Scrapbooking is a fun, relaxing and creative hobby that commemorates a family’s history by showing photos, stories, dates and any information they desire for their ancestry to know; a perfect legacy to leave to future generations. The materials that can be used to design a scrapbook are
boundless. People use ribbons, lace, wool, fancy threads or anything they find. Scrapbooking has indirectly been around for centuries. In the 15th century, this product was called a commonplace book which included recipes, quotations, letters, poems and more. Each book was an original item based on its creator’s interests. In the 16th century, friendship albums were common. Photos were added in 1826 when the first permanent photograph was invented by

with our loans so every producer can purchase coverage if they wish,” says Schmidt, noting that as cattle prices have increased, so have the floor prices producers can lock in with WLPIP. Easier Access to Credit About 40 per cent of FAA members enroll in WLPIP through the Cattle Price Insurance Program (WCPIP). Schmidt anticipates that number could double because “producers are realizing price insurance is a necessary part of doing business. It’s bankable so they can take it to their lender to access credit more easily. And you don’t have to look hard for examples of how WLPIP has helped cattle producers manage their price risk,” he says, pointing to the XL Foods plant closure in Brooks almost two years ago due to E. coli concerns. “Feeder cattle fell nearly $20 per 100 pounds at that time, and producers who had price insurance were getting payouts of nearly $200/head,” he says. Chris Sloan says WLPIP played a major role on his cattle operation near St. Paul during the year of the XL Foods plant closure. Luckily Sloan had insured his feeder cattle back then and was covered when prices dropped more than 20 cents/lb due to a backlog of feeder cattle on the market at the time. “The only money we made was through the insurance program that year,” he recalls. Sloan says although the cattle market looks strong this year, he knows that can change quickly. That’s why he’s already insured some of his calves. He says the high retail price of beef on grocery store shelves is a risk factor that could eventually impact cattle prices. “That worries me because there’s only so much the consumer can afford before they switch to some other type of meat which would drive cattle prices down,” he explains. “And in the middle of summer if it gets hot and dry and feed costs
spike higher, we won’t have to worry if markets drop to $1.50/lb and we’ve got our 850 lb steers insured at $1.70/lb. We’re protected.” May 29 Calf Deadline WLPIP programs are available year-round for fed cattle, feeder cattle, and hogs. The only exception is WCPIP-Calf which is offered from February to May due to the seasonality of calf sales, says Hagen, noting the deadline to purchase WCPIP-Calf policies this year is May 29. For more information about WLPIP, producers can contact their local AFSC Branch, the AFSC Call Centre at 1-877899-AFSC (2372) or visit www.wlpip.ca.

Colleen Mascher, with kindergarten student, Evan Lamash, explains the process of pysanka art.
Andrew kindergarten student, Natalie Vanderwal, carefully writes on her egg to create her Easter pysanka.
Volunteers Col leen Mascher, Lydia Yadlowski, Carol Sorotsky, and Colleen Hamaliuk spent almost two days at Andrew School teaching kindergarten to grade 6 students the art of pysanka writing. With the assistance of a few junior high girls as well, every elementary student completed their own pysanka in time to take it home for Easter. Other Easter activities included the making of bunny hats in the playschool class, coloured eggs in the kindergarten class, yellow chicks and
coloured eggs in the grade 1 & 2 class, bunny cards in the grade 3 & 4 class, and a party or two to celebrate Easter! (Andrew School/ Photos)
