Christmas Bureau in Operation

Caroline Knowles Submitted Every year at this time the Vegreville Christmas Bureau Committee goes on a search for a suitable space for the depot. The space needed is for receiving donations and for displaying the Coats for Kids and Families as well as a place for people to come and apply for hampers. In addition to those functions the committee needs space for sorting and organizing the gifts and toys for the younger family members. On top of that there has to be room for more than a 100 hampers to be filled with suitable Christmas food for families ranging

from those with small children to singles and seniors. Lots of different requirements. Year after year the Bureau has been fortunate in receiving support from the community for all that it does and in particular has had each of the various locations donated. Once again this year the space is donated at the north end of Main (50th) Street across from the former “Coffee by the Book”. The Christmas Bureau Depot will be open Wed 5 – 7 pm, Fri 10am – 1 pm, Sun 2 – 4 pm. Anyone applying for a hamper is asked to come to the depot during those hours or if not able to get there, to phone 780 603

0321. Donors can also bring new toys and gifts for tots to teens (except no stuffed/ plush toys) as well as donations in cash/cheques. Gently used winter jackets and coats in all sizes are also needed (must have working zippers, please). Toques and mitts are a plus. The Bureau is also glad to pass on Christmas trees and decorations that are in good condition. The deadline for donations in kind is Friday, December 12th, although donations of funds are gratefully accepted anytime before or after that. Donors can also drop off new unwrapped toys and

gifts at A.L. Horton and St. Martin’s Schools as well as a number of businesses around town. Coats for Kids and Families collection boxes can be found at

the Vegreville Centennial Library. Check the posters for the many other locations. Actual address of the Depot is 5127 Main (50th) Street (across the street from Coffee by the Book). The Christmas Bureau phone number is 780 603 0321.

Louisiana Hayride Show turns the knob to a golden era Rosanne Fortier Conversations buzzed with excitement weeks before the Louisiana Hayride Show rode into town on November 8. Vegreville is riddle with folks possessing distinctive rural roots including oldtime country music. The Louisiana Hayride Tribute Show nourished this trait where the performers

charmed a full house of citizens who came from across the province and were of all ages as this cast performed Hank Snow, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Tammy Wynette, George Jones, Red Foley, Don Gibson, Willie Nelson, Faron Young, Patsy Cline, Dick Thomas, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings

and Glen Campbell impersonations. The performer’s authentically-edge, rich voices and catchy tunes had even the youngsters dancing in their seats and the audience greeted each act with whistles and rapturous applause. The first tribute act was Moving On by Hank Snow. Going forward, Lori

Smile of the

WEEK

Kindling the TELUS Christmas candle? Dear Telus, I still remember the light up candle that went on the radio towers and I really miss it. I would really like it if you could put it up this Christmas. Ever since you put up new towers it’s been gone. None of my friends remember it. I don’t actually remember it, but one night I was sitting in my hot tub and my mom told me about it. Ever since that night I wanted you to put it back up. I think other people would like it if you put it back up too. It’s been a long time since I looked up at that tower and the candle was glowing. I know it’s really hard work but I would really appreciate it if you put it back up. It’s ok if you put it up too late but at least put it up for next Christmas. Sincerely, Bianca

Summer Throwback

As kids return to school and ask each other “what did you do this summer?” Shayla Anisa and Madison Taylor will likely tell friends one of their highlights was singing during the Town of Vegreville’s Canada Day celebrations. “We had a lot of fun singing,” Madison said. “It was an amazing opportunity.” (John Wagner/Submitted)

Christmas Blitz wins in helping kids Rosanne Fortier Vegreville Preschool Christmas Blitz was a fastpaced festive sale with 28 tables of tradeshow products where plenty of parents accompanied their children on November 8 at Vegreville Centennial Library. This sale was held for a good reason because

Nicole Basarabowich, Fundraising Coordinator for Vegreville Preschool Association and Shannon Kerr, vendor for Jockey organized this sale where Basarabowich said the purpose of the sale is to raise funds for Vegreville Preschool because it is a great program to have in

our community. “The three and four years old can access this program to start their early childhood education. The children are our future, so it’s essential to give them a good beginning.” There were a few clothing vendors at the sale. Mayberry’s Leggings with Mandy Rudyk, vendor said she is brand-new to selling these products.

“These leggings are onesize-fits-most and they fit size 0-12 for the adults and there is a plus size that is zero and up for this age group too. Kids come in size 4-7 and the extra large for this age fits 7-12, so they are flexible, size-wise. Then we have blouses too.” “Clothing makes a great gift but people should study the person they wish

to buy a clothing gift for, see what the person’s style is, if they are bold and adventurous, some of the more patterned ones with the brighter colors might be a better option, if the person is more the plainJane style, go for the solid colors.” Rudyk added. Naiomi Laschowski was the vendor for MIZ Prantz. “I’m selling this imported kids’ clothing

where I have pajamas, hoodies and pants, tutu dresses and leggings of cartoons and superheroes.” “To buy a nice clothing gift for a child, you have to consider the child and what they are into at the moment.” Laschowski, “If you’re buying for a niece or nephew, you should speak to the parents or observe the child.”

Mandy Rudyk, vendor for Mayberry’s Leggings stands besides her products which she said makes a great Christmas gift because they are one-size-fits-all and suit any taste or style. (Rosanne Fortier/Photo)

If you’re a good chiropractic candidate, your care will consist of a schedule of chiropractic adjustments. These help normalize spinal function, help restore essential spinal curves, improve circulation and reduce nerve irritation. Many patients report fewer and less severe headaches.

Because of the way each disc is attached to the vertebra above and below it, a spinal disc cannot “slip”. However, trauma or injury to the spine can cause discs to bulge, herniate, or worse, rupture. This can be quite painful, putting pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots, often interfering with

their function. The chiropractic approach to disc problems is to help restore better motion and position to the spinal joints. Besides reducing disc bulging, better spinal function helps decrease inflammation so the slow process of healing the surrounding soft tissues can begin. Can I adjust myself? No. Some people may be able to make their joints “pop,” but that’s not an adjustment! Worse, damage may occur by habitually stressing the joints, muscles and ligaments. Adjustments are specific and take years to master. Even as a chiropractor I must consult a colleague to benefit from chiropractic care. What about kids? Is there an age limit to chiropractic care? Great question. I have provided precise, effective chiropractic care to babies as young as minutes old to adults who are over 100. Babies are not just small adults. Without the language to explain, many newborns experience colic, unexplained crying, lack of appetite, frequent ear infections or other signs of poor health. Taking time to properly listen to these cues

and the concerns of the new parents during their visits to my clinic help me provide the care to these little ones. It has been my experience that regular chiropractic checkups are also helpful to monitor spinal development as infants sit upright, support their heads, learn to

crawl and take their first brave steps. Their little bodies go through many bumps and falls during this time and as a chiropractor, periodic checks can keep everything running smoothly. Sadly, bedwetting and many childhood aches and pains are passed off as “growing

pains” or “just a phase they’re going through.” Careful! Aches and pains at any age are a sign that something isn’t right. To be there best I believe a child’s healthcare team must include a chiropractor. I supply information like this as a public service. If you have questions I haven’t answered here, please email us at fisherchiropractic@hot mail.com and I will try to get them answered for you. I know that the more you learn about chiropractic, the more confidence you’ll have that it will work for you. It’s safe. It’s natural. And it works. It’s a simple idea that has stood the test of time and helped millions enjoy

Liberals omit the facts on refugee health care Dear Editor, In response to a recent letter to the editor from Liberal MP Hedy Fry on our Government’s changes to the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP), I wish to provide some key facts that she failed to include.

Canada has a long and proud tradition of providing protection to refugees and we will continue to do so. We are appealing the Federal Court decision on our Government’s reforms to the IFHP because it fails Canadian taxpayers and neglects genuine refugees.

We remain committed to putting the interests of Canadians and genuine refugees first. We strongly believe that failed claimants who refuse to leave Canada and individuals making asylum claims from US or the European Union should not be entitled to

better health care than Canadians receive through provincial health plans. Under the old, broken refugee system, abuse was commonplace. Thanks to our reforms, we’ve seen the number of asylum claims from safe countries fall by 87%. This means countries

truly in distress, like Afghanistan, Syria and the Congo, have resumed their place among the top ten countries for asylum claimants in Canada. Thanks to fewer unfounded asylum claims, we have already saved taxpayers $600 million in health and social benefits, with anticipated savings of $1.5 billion

over five years. Canadians can be confident that our Conservative Government will continue to vigorously defend the interests of Canadian taxpayers and the integrity of our fair and generous refugee determination system. Leon Benoit, M.P.

where nobody knew who he was. He was just a hillbilly singer but a few times on the Louisiana Hayride Show changed that and he became very popular and he went on to Nashville. But Hank was born with a spinal condition that left him in a lot of pain and to deal with this, he developed a pill and alcohol addiction and would miss shows, so he was fired. Hence, he went back to the Louisiana show in 1953.” A honky-tonk sound with

intense rhythmic energy rocked the roof of the Social Centre when the tunes-Your Cheating Heart and Hey Good Looking by Hank Williams were performed by Gil Risling. “In 1956, Johnny Cash released a song that would be a huge hit. The song he wrote was a beautiful love song, a ballad for wrote for his new bride and the song was called, Because You’re Mine, which he was very proud of this song. Then when Johnny was touring, Carl Perkins was with him

and Carl told him the title was lame and maybe he should pull some words out and call it, I Walk the Line. So, Johnny renamed the love song this title instead and got back to Sun Records but this record company wanted to speed it up because they didn’t want a ballad. Johnny was devastated by this but Sun persisted and finally Johnny agreed because he worked so hard to get on with them and this song became so popular.” From there, William performed, I Walk

Mike Melnichuk blended in the stand-up bass, electric guitar and vocals. Gil Risling added electric and acoustic guitar, and vocals. Andrea Anderson performed vocals to Patsy Cline’s and Tammy Wynette’s tunes.

Spotless service On November 7th around 5pm I decided to wash my car at Spotless Car Wash in Vegreville. I pulled up to the machine to pay. Put in a ten dollar bill... the machine returned the bill to me....turned it around and put it in the machine again....the machine returned the bill to me. I did this until the bill was put in the four variable ways. Each time the bill came back to me. On the machine there is a phone number to call when experiencing problems. I have used this in the past and staff have arrived within a half hour to rectify the situation for me. Realizing I had some reading I could do while waiting, I decided to call the number and was prepared to wait for someone to come and assist. The call was answered on the first ring by a gentleman with a welcoming voice. Upon explaining the situation to him and being prepared to wait for some time, the gentleman said to me, “how would you like a free wash”? I thought my hearing had escaped me and I said, “pardon me”? He repeated, “Would a free wash work for you”? Once I realized what was being offered to me, my breath was taken away and I told him I would be very grateful. He THANKED ME for being so patient and understanding. I not only received a free wash, I received the best wash Spotless Car Wash offers!!! Also, I didn’t even have to wait as the gentleman gave me a code to enter which allowed me to access the car wash immediately! I want to recognize this faceless person as representing the ultimate of customer service and making me feel appreciated as a customer. He is a true representation of what all businesses should be................putting the customer first and treating them with respect and dignity. I have paid forward this act of kindness and will continue to do so. With gratitude and thanks, J. Frost

Vegreville-born author exposes the darkness within diamonds Joan Mettauer Submitted Looking like craters from a meteor shower, diamond mines have gouged out huge regions of Canada’s arctic region providing jobs for struggling communities and a source of income beyond the moon. Some Northerners reaping the benef its aren’t slaving away underground, but are high above. Author and retired Flight Ops Manager Joan Mettauer can tell stories far removed from the Canadian life we know, and now she has published her f irst book, weaving her experiences into a true Canadian mystery based in – and over - the rugged ice. Diamonds in an Arctic Sk y, published by FriesenPress, tells the story of Andi Nowak who, haunted by memo-

ries of her daughter, ventures north to the remote town of Inuvik and enters a challenging career at Tuktu Aviation. The discovery of a rich kimberlite pipe near the small community creates a diamond-mining frenzy, and more business for Tuktu. When Andi discovers that their Twin Otter aircraft are being used for unauthorized f lights, her queries to the crew are violently dismissed. With the aid of her new friend, local galler y owner and dog-sledding enthusiast North Ruben, they plot a scheme to trace the aircraft’s mysterious movements, but their plan backfires with devastating - and deadly - results. BLAIR Our Sincere Thanks And Gratitude To all those whose respect, devotion, compassion and patience and were an integral part of Mom’s life and cared for her – enabling her to live with as much independence and dignity possible for the years she struggled with Parkinson’s. With your presence, the ability to express concerns and share in addressing them made her challenges so much easier as her health slowly declined. You are more appreciated more than you could ever know and we know you too share in our loss. Her pain was lessened by your attentiveness while she resided with you, and her burden lifted when God called her home to suffer no more. We ask God to pour his grace upon you and bless you as you continue in your journeys of compassion; and know there are many angels who guide your footsteps and many thankful heats who share in your load. You are true blessings. Family of Victoria Blair

Inspiring Education a real hit with students Rosanne Fortier St. Martin’s School’s three Focus programsDigital Design and Communication, Fine Arts and Recreation and Leadership programs are well underway and will be held all of the 2014/15 school year. These programs are progressing in a positive, forward-looking and skill-gaining way as grades five and six’s students receive a number of predicted and unanticipated benefits from these programs. “I was interested in learning about technology more because as teachers, we have to always stay on top of technology.” Lisa Salsbury, Grades 5/6 teacher who is the lead teacher for Digital Design and Communication said. “I was always interested in photography and other digital formats, so I’m excited about his program.” “In this Focus program, we first started talking about Google docs and some of the other programs we are using in school. Then we got into PowerPoint where we did many things. The last session, the children had to find out about the history of Halloween according to the Catholic reference to it. We researched this on Google and took the pictures and this information and made PowerPoint’s presentations on them. We spoke about what would be visually pleasing to the audience and we looked at the color and font size. ” Salsbury said. “This fell into our Religion’s aspect because we were speaking about how Halloween has a history of being All Saints Day and All Souls Day. So, we mashed it all together into a project.” “Now, we are working with a program called Movie Makers which the kids are really excited about because they always liked videotaping themselves. Eventually, we want to get this on the internet.” Salsbury mentioned. “I think the kids are pleased to have a chance to learn something new, be creative and show off because some of the kids are really advanced in their technology skills and they can teach other students how to use these programs. I tell them the basics of what I want them to do and then someone will notice that they can put music in it or change the background and soon they

are sharing what they learned with other kids. It’s exciting to the students because it’s relevant to them; most kids grew up with computers. It’s amazing what they can learn in such a short time. “The students are gaining confidence in their technology skills and I noticed their communication skills growing when they are teaching and sharing with other people, they don’t only teach their Focus group’s classmates but they are teaching their combined grades 5/6 class on what they learned.” Salsbury said. “That is the neat thing about our Focus groups because they are taking something they learned in the class and bringing it to the other groups. For example, the Recreation and Leadership program taught our class how to play Ultimate Frisbee. It’s that sharing of information and talents that is really neat to see among all three of the Focus groups. This program increases their social skills too.” “The unanticipated benefit was that because the students were arranged in different groups based on their interests, it brought some differences because I had some students who were extremely drawn to technology and were not ones who were strong or interested in Physical Education type of activities and now when I teach my Digital Design class , it’s interesting to see how they are relating and becoming leaders in their gym class because of the strong kids who are in the Recreation and Leadership class and now we have them in the Digital Design Class and the students who were strong with their abilities in gym class develop their unknown talents in technology too.” Dumont said he’s encouraged by the positive attitudes of students taking part in the programs. The privilege of participating keeps students focused in other classes too. “They know in the morning if they want to go to the Focus programs in the afternoon, they have to behave and complete their work in the morning. It’s something for them to look forward to and teaches them a good work ethic because they are so excited about the things we do in this program.”

Чи є в тебе кожух? Olena Babiy

possible to wrap children into them. In addition to the fact of being the main traditional Ukrainian winter coat, kozhukh was widely used in family rituals – on a wedding, at child birth and during christening. For example, during the matchmaking the parents of the bride were seated on a chair covered with a kozhukh. After the wedding the married couple was heading to the husband’s

house where they were also seated on a kozhukh as a symbol of a prosperous life. At birth, the infant was placed on a kozhukh saying: “Wish you to be as rich as hairy this kozhukh.” And at the christening, when the parents were passing the child to the godparents, it was traditional for godparents to throw money on a kozhukh where the child was lying.

first, I painted scenes of the local area but now we’re traveling, I’m doing prints from Jordan and I have done Hawaiian’s, Israel’s and South Africa’s scenes. When I was in Venice, I sketched out a scene and I want to do a water-color painting of this place.” Ziegler said.

“This year, we’re going to Australia, New Zealand and Polynesia, so I hope to do paintings from the scenery of these countries.” “I’m inspired by beautiful scenery and I try to capture what I see. My favorite thing about painting is being in my own little
