Drive-Through Holiday Parade

Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent A Very Vegreville Christmas featured a Drive-Through Stationary Holiday Parade which featured 16 entries and had 231 vehicles driving through Vegreville Agricultural Grounds on November 21.

This event was hosted by the Town of Vegreville in partnership with the Vegreville and District Chamber of Commerce.

Anya Langkow, Tourism, Recreation, and Culture Coordinator said Tim Hortons gave out a free hot chocolate, coffee, and donut to everyone who entered the parade. “Everyone who was involved in the parade seemed happy. It was great to see some non-profit organizations partnering with businesses on displays and to see some new businesses who haven’t participated before.

The Vegreville Christmas Bureau did really well with their collection. Then it was great to see the Mayor of Vegreville and all of Vegreville Town Council together; they decorated their float together, too. Volunteers from Vegreville Agricultural Society passed out treat bags from the different organizations who participated in the parade.

RCMP files from November 15 - 22 Arthur Beaudette News Advertiser November 16 09:04 – Report from an individual who received a photo-radar ticket for a license plate that had not been used for some time. It was last used on an old car that was sold a few years ago and the plate was in his garage. Plate was entered into the RCMP database.

17:58 – Complaint of a suspicious vehicle with unwanted individuals at a rural property near Mundare. Members attended, confirmed the driver was not impaired, but verified that the vehicle was not registered nor insured. The passenger was determined to have outstanding warrants. A 35-year-old male from Camrose was charged with driving with no insurance (mandatory court) and driving without registration (voluntary penalty of $324). The passenger, a 23-year-old female from Mundare was arrested on multiple outstanding warrants and released with documents for court. The vehicle was towed.

20:57 – Report from a male complainant that during communications with an unknown female on social media, he accidentally sent photos to her. She then requested that he send her $2,500 or she would forward the photos to his family.

The subject of the complaint has since deleted her profile from the social media platform. Guidance was provided to the complainant about internet security and information was provided for the Canadian Anti-fraud Centre.

November 17 02:45 – Vegreville members attempted to stop a snowmobile at a Vegreville gas station. They later located the snowmobile in the ditch outside of Vegreville.

The GDL driver was provided a roadside breath demand which resulted in a fail.

The driver was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle and transported to the Vegreville detachment where additional breath samples were obtained. The samples resulted in readings of 0.150 and 0.140 (almost twice the legal limit). The driver is subject to criminal charges; driving while impaired, flight from a peace officer, and failure to comply with release conditions.

16:12 – Report of attempted fraud. A Vegreville financial institution called about an individual who was attempting to cash a cheque on another client’s account.

The client was contacted and denied writing the cheque. Under investigation.

November 18 00:30 – Report of a collision on HWYS 857 and 16 where a vehicle left the

roadway and hit a pole and fence and then rolled. Members responded to assist and investigate. All 3 occupants were transported to Vegreville hospital with minor injuries by EMS. There was no evidence of impaired driving.

16:28 – While on patrol, traffic services observed a vehicle in Mundare that passed through a yield sign without yielding and almost hitting the marked police vehicle which had the right of way. The 39-year-old male driver was issued a ticket for failing to yield which comes with a voluntary penalty of $405.

November 19

10:38 – Report of a disturbance at the Vegreville courthouse. An individual was knocking on the doors in the courthouse. Members attended and located the individual who indicated that he had missed court and wanted to turn himself in. Members obliged and arrested the individual who was later given related documents for court.

18:56 – Report of possible intoxicated driver near Mundare.

Members patrolled but did not locate the vehicle.

They did receive another call about a suspicious male on a rural property.

Members attended, located the intoxicated male in a building on the property. The individual was arrested and charges are pending.

November 20

09:02 – Report of a collision in downtown Vegreville. Members attended and investigated. They learned that a 54-year-old driver from Edmonton, could not see through their iced up windows while using their cell phone and was driving in the wrong lane. The driver responsible for the collision was issued tickets for driving carelessly, (VP $567) and driving while using a cell phone, (VP $300).

12:13 – Traffic services observed a highway tractor was issued a warning for an insecure load. The driver was also issued a warning for not producing a driver’s license.

14:15 – While on patrol, a member came upon a 2 vehicle collision in Vegreville. One vehicle had run a red light striking the other vehicle which had the right of way. One driver had minor injuries and was transported to hospital by EMS. The second driver declined treatment. The driver who caused the collision was forwarded for a driving fitness review.

16:22 – Report of possible attempted fraud of a Vegreville Senior. It is sus-

pected that a 29 year old family member not living in the area, is trying to access funds via cheques and a credit card. Under investigation.

16:45 – Multiple calls from an individual out of province claiming that an area resident was using technology including listening devices to listen to the individual and make people sick.

Mental health is a factor.

23:29 – Complaint of negative comments being made on Facebook. The complainant’s home address was posted including claims that the complainant is a drug dealer. Under investigation.

November 21

07:02 – Report of theft of four tires from a residence in Vegreville. The complainant stated that his truck was jacked up and blocked then his four tires were stolen, leaving his truck on blocks. Under investigation.

07:35 – Report of an assault in progress north of Vegreville on the highway.

Members attended and found an altercation had occurred and bear spray was used on one victim.

Members located the group and arrested a male from Saddle Lake for assault with a weapon. All parties were provided medical care by EMS, none having serious injuries.

The male was later released with documents for court.

10:37 – Traffic enforcement in the area resulting in tickets for speeding, seat belts, insurance etc.

November 22

07:44 – Report of a truck stolen overnight in Mundare. A 2003 gray Chevy Silverado is the description. Under investigation 08:49 – Report of a 2013 GMC Sierra stolen overnight in Mundare. Under investigation.

21:12 – Individual located with 5 outstanding warrants from Edmonton Police Services. The individual was remanded and transported to Edmonton.

During the week there were 111 calls for service made in total including: 0 false alarms, 3 false 911, 4 animal strikes, 2 wellbeing checks, 7 calls under the Mental Health Act, and approximately 39 tickets from traffic enforcement.

Arthur Beaudette News Advertiser - Opinion When we go to the polls, our ultimate goal, regardless of our party preference is to elect an individual who shares some common views and will be our voice in the hallowed halls of government. Unfortunately, what happens too often is reminiscent of a showing of the California Sea Lions at West Edmonton Mall. Unfortunately, the antics in government are not nearly as entertaining.

Recently the Federal Liberal filibuster of the ethics committee proved to be a show worthy of Sea World. Intended to stifle the progress of the inquiry into the WE Charity investigation, Liberal MPs were paid by taxpayers to drone on about electric cars, political history, and reading the paper.

They also suggested the committee study the U.S. election to see if there were lessons to be learned.

In similar fashion, the virtual meeting the UCP held for public input on Alberta Parks seemed to be a staged event.

While portrayed as a forum for concerned individuals and groups to ask questions of Environment Minister Jason Nixon, the reality of the event quickly became apparent.

Many questions were not answered, and some that were, had

a typical political non-answer. Attendees quickly reported that shortly after the start of the Facebook live stream, the chat function was turned off and many who interacted were there by invitation. Hardly the town hall on the subject that was promised.

If you’ve watched the town hall events by any group, some are seeded with friendly voices and others are outright propaganda events. Shows at best, orchestrated echo chambers at worst.

What ties these two events together? Looking at it plainly, those in attendance, many of them elected by us and living off of our tax dollars are simply doing their master’s bidding.

As Michael Ignatieff (former Liberal leader) stated, loyalty is a value that is rewarded while disloyalty results in disapproval and demotion. The end result? A chorus of trained seals rather than voices of the electorate.

A recently released biography has created a bit of a stir on Parliament Hill and also brought some clarity to the circus we see in some recent events.

Former MP Celina Caesar-Chavannes, has released her biography entitled, Can You Hear Me Now? In the memoir, Caesar-Chavannes makes public a number of accounts of her time as a Liberal MP. While the party stated it valued her opinion and perspective, it did not care to hear either, instead preferred to have her pose silently for photo ops.

As PM Trudeau’s Parliamentary Secretary, she was not encouraged to speak on his behalf or appear on his behalf.

Notable exceptions were the opening of the National Museum of African American History in Washington and the inauguration of the Republic of Ghana’s new president.

She was also ignored when requesting a 15 minute meeting once per month with the PM. Not an unreasonable request for a Parliamentary Secretary.

“Our leader always said that he wanted to engage with all caucus members but even in the last year of his first term, there were some that had never met him,” she said.

Like those before her with opinions of their own and voices that could not be silenced, MP Celina Caesar-Chavannes eventually moved to sit as an independent. MP Jody WilsonRaybould and MP Jane Philpott are other names that should be familiar. These are all MPs who refused to act as trained seals and seemed to do their best to have a voice, even when it was not agreeable to those in power.

We have fallen far from the ideals of the signing of Magna Carta and the first English Parliament in 1215. Clearly, there have been many changes and a fair share of chaos over the centuries, but the twentieth century stands on its own. We are in a time where popularity reigns supreme, likes and followers are more important than the entire electorate or the good of the country, and we have too many trained seals in our government houses.

Carter Collection Pays Tribute on 60th Anniversary of Bus Accident

Allen Carter Submitted To many of our Chipman and Lamont residents the date of November 29, 1960 is just a heartbeat away. Anyone 70 years of age or more is instantly reminded of the community’s tragic loss when a school bus and a Canadian Nation Rail engine collided on the east side of Lamont.

Ten years ago, Chipman held a 50th Anniversary Memorial where the community gathered to remember those lost, those surviving, and those who continue to suffer from memories past. When the gathering ended there was an accumulation of memorabilia collected from impacted area residents. As the collection needed a permanent home, the Carters were offered the distinction of displaying these treasures in what A tribute in remembrance of the bus accident victims. Since that time, we have proudly displayed the newspaper history, pictures and personal memoirs of area residents. This bit of history has been part of Aldon Auto Salvage since that time.

Occasionally it has been open to the public for celebrations such as clubs, reunions, photo ops as it is part of an operating business. Arrangements must be made well ahead of such requests. Due to COVID-19 the display is all but closed to the public so it is our hope that this contribution to the Vegreville News Advertiser recognizes this time in history.

In retrospect was this the community’s finest moment? At a time when the only ambulance was a multi-use hearse, this little town did what had to be done. surely saved lives.

Lamont’s School of Nursing had been a source of pride since 1915 when we had the first graduate.

Since that time a class had completed their three years training every year.

With the training school came the best in educators. Nursing grads from Lamont were well known worldwide as the best.

Dr. Morley Young, Dr Roland Young, Drs. Weatherilt and Dobson.

The talents of L. Marie, Ex-military, Director of Nursing put all their training to the task at hand. The multitude of grads and student nurses made immediately available was the saving grace on that day.

Professional, well trained, dedicated. This is why they were trained by the best, only to be the best. Almost half our students were lost on this day. The other half have survived to be parents, grandparents, friends and neighbours. For this we shall be eternally grateful.

90 Years Ago – November 26, 1930

Some stirring representatives to the Post Office Department finally brought action, and Postmaster B.P. Hinde has been duly instructed to pack up his baggage in the old office and move it up to the new office.

Unparalleled violence was witnessed in the terrific windstorm which swept the northern part of Alberta last Saturday. Vast quantities of real estate were agitated and each individual particle of the land hit the unprotected face with all the violence of a machine gun bullet. A part of the roof on the annex at the rear of the Bank of Commerce which house the vault, was moved by the violence of the gale. The auto camp just west of town, was lifted from its foundation and unceremoniously dumped in the brush in an inverted position.

Alberta, which is generally looked upon as a wheat and cattle raising country, will produce about 24,000,000 pounds of sugar this year from sugar beets grown in the southern part of the province. All together 14,000 acres of beets were under crop this year in Alberta. The centre of the industry is at Raymond.

75 Years Ago – November 28, 1945

While chasing coyotes on Birch Lake Sunday morning, L.F. Tuck of Lavoy had the misfortune to break through the ice. The crew of the Northern Development Co. took its caterpillar and hoist out and rescued the car safely from the icy water. Mr. Tuck received a very cold bath on a very cold day.

It can now also be disclosed that 210,000 Indian troops were overseas at the end of the European war. They were in Italy, Africa, Iraq and Iran where they guarded the supply route to Russia.

American engineers engaged in constructing an air base on the Island of St. Lucia built a bridge on dry land! Called upon to span a stream at a point where it had a hairpin curve they built the bridge, on land at the mouth of the curve, and then dammed off the water in the curve and forced it under their bridge.

A British official said a C-54 transport plane furnished Winston Churchill by the United States when he was prime minister had been turned back. “It is not our plane,” said the official who asked to by anonymous. Its purpose has been served, he indicated, and it should be returned.

50 Years Ago – November 26, 1970

Merchants of the town set Christmas Shopping hours for the month of December at a meeting held recently and the program suggested was approved by the membership of the Chamber of Commerce. The stores will remain open each Wednesday in December plus remain open late December 21, 22 and 23. They will closed at 6:00 p.m. December 24th.

The Vegreville 4-H Clothing Club presented a cheque for $50.00 to the Dr. R. R. Cairns School. The money was raised by the girls in the bake sale of Christmas stockings. Maxine Klammer made the presentation to Dr. Ross Cairns.

Miss Sandy Kuzyk was chosen as a Camrose Lutheran College Princess in the school’s recent Queen Contest. Miss Kuzyk is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Kuzyk of Vegreville.

John S. Batiuk, a farmer from the Mundare area, is seeking the nomination for the Progressive Conservative Constituency of Vegreville. In the public service on the Lamont School Division from 1958 to 1967, Reeve of the County of Lamont since its formation in 1968. Mr. Batiuk is married and has one son and three daughters.

25 Years Ago – November 28, 1995

Sid Hinton was elected zone five director of the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties. Hinton, who is the County of Minburn reeve, will be the liaison between the zone and the association.

The Two Hills trip of the month winner for November of a trip to Las Vegas valued at $809 was David Orlecki of Two Hills.

The rink of Larry Lafleur, Brenda Dew, Greg Muzechka and Roxanna Bennett defeated the Herbert rink to win zone 12 curling play downs. The foursome now advance to Northerns at the Avonair Curling Club in Edmonton.

Local producers have donated almost 47,000 tons of grain to hungry people in overseas countries. Steven Achtymichuk, the Vegreville co-ordinator for the Canadian Foodgrains Banks, reported that the local goal was 50 metric tonnes. So far 46.6 tonnes of grain were donated at the Cargill elevator in Vegreville.

Evylin Chudyk, grade 6, won a ghetto blaster for raising $312 in pledges in the swim-a-thon. The Two Hills swimming pool received a total of $3,882.06 from students participating in the swim-a-thon.

While the Lakeland Regional Health Authority welcomed the government’s move to make no further cuts in health care funding, the issue of doctor shortage still looms large.

Freedom and Responsibility Two Sides of Same Coin

Gerry Chidiac Troy Media Contributor Psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl made many trips to the United States.

He appreciated the sense of freedom experienced by Americans, but added, “I recommend that the Statue of Liberty on the East Coast be supplemented by a Statue of Responsibility on the West Coast.”

Freedom and responsibility seem to mean different things to different people. To Frankl, the ultimate freedom was for a person to mindfully choose how they would respond, regardless of the circumstance. When we choose freely, however, we’re responsible for the consequences of each decision.

This realization may make us very uncomfortable.

Those of us who live in democracies have the ability to influence our governments. We rightly express gratitude toward those who made sacrifices, even giving their lives, so we could have this freedom.

Seeing freedom and liberty as the ability to do whatever we want with no consideration for the consequences of our actions, however, trivializes what we’ve been given by simply making it an excuse to behave irresponsibly. It’s also a recipe for social chaos.

This is just one of the many deep truths that have become clear during the COVID-19 crisis.

Humans don’t know everything but we do have an incredible capacity to learn. This is why directives from scientists aren’t the same now as they were last spring. They’re giving us the best information possible, trying to err on the side of caution, all the while humbly accepting that they don’t have any definitive answers. Their recommendations may change as new evidence emerges but this is a normal part of the scientific process.

The rest of us can choose whether we want to follow the recommendations of experts in virology and epidemiology, or even if we want to believe them.

The harsh reality of this decision,

however, is that we then become responsible for the consequences of our actions.

Everything we do has a consequence, sometimes positive, sometimes negative, sometimes neither.

The challenge is that there’s no way we can know the consequences of every decision.

However, through the centuries sages have realized there are principles that lead to the best outcomes. We need to be humble in our quest for truth, admitting what we don’t know and being willing to listen to others. We also need to be respectful, looking not only at what works for us but also what’s best for our neighbours.

In order to have this kind of humility and willingness to sacrifice, we need to see the goodness and beauty in ourselves. We need to be confident and secure in order to admit that we could be wrong.

Though it may sound counterintuitive, when we’re feeling down, as many of us do in this time of isolation, often the best thing we can do is something kind for our neighbour.

The COVID-19 crisis is getting worse around the world and the challenges we face will continue to exacerbate as those of us in the northern hemisphere move into our winter season.

However, we’re learning a great deal about this virus as we move forward. It’s like we’re all part of a global experiment, constantly providing data to our scientists.

We are indeed free to accept what health officials tell us. We’re free to comply with the new laws and the societal expectations regarding COVID19 protocol. Each choice we make, however, has a consequence and by making our choices we become responsible for the known consequences.

We know COVID-19 is a highly contagious virus. We know it spreads rapidly, particularly when people congregate in closed spaces. We know it has already killed over one million people worldwide.

Perhaps the most responsible thing we can do is to freely choose to follow the advice of B.C. chief health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry: “Be kind. Be calm. Be safe.”

Premier Jason Kenney Declares State of Public Health Emergency New mandatory public health measures have been put in place in communities across Alberta to protect the health system and slow the spread of COVID-19.

Kenney said that while face masks play an important role they are not a silver bullet, however masks will be mandatory in all indoor workplaces in Edmonton and Calgary and surrounding communities. The only municipality in our region currently under the enhanced status is Smoky Lake County which has 67 active cases.

On November 23 Vegreville Town Council discussed a proposed face coverings bylaw that will be brought back for further review at its next meeting.

Under the proposed bylaw, it would require people to wear a face covering at all times while in an indoor, enclosed or substantially enclosed public place or in a public vehicle. As far as signage, an employer or proprietor of a business must prominently display a sign in a location that is visible to a person immediately upon entering the public place or a public vehicle. Failure to wear a face covering where required has a specified penalty of $100 and failure to display prescribed signage has a specified penalty of $200.

Province has implemented in areas with Enhanced Status include no indoor social gatherings in any setting, and outdoor gatherings would be restricted to 10 people. Wedding and funeral services, maximum of 10 people, no receptions are permitted.

The only municipality in our region currently under the enhanced status is Smoky Lake County which has 67 active cases.

No festivals or events will be allowed.

Places of worship at 1/3 of normal attendance in Calgary, Edmonton and enhanced areas.

There will be restricted access to some businesses and services starting November 27. Some businesses will be open by appointment only.

A complete list is published on the Government of Alberta’s COVID19 website.

At home learning for students in Grades 7-12 will begin November 30 and go until January 11. Grades K-6 at home learning will begin December 18 and go until January 11.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Alberta stands at 49,536 with 1,115 cases on Nov. 23. The number of recovered cases are 35,695 and the number of active cases are 13,349. A total of 492 deaths have been reported. There are 348 people in hospital and 66 people in intensive care.

Co-operators Vegreville Agency Rates Number One in Canada Michelle Pinon News Advertiser The Co-operators Agency in Vegreville has been named the number one agency in all of Canada.

Financial Advisor for the Vegreville Agency, first heard the news when the announcement came during the Western Congress in Calgary last fall.

Fournier, who took over the Vegreville agency in July of 2016, said he was “shocked, stunned and humbled” by the prestigious award. With 400 Co-operators agencies nationwide, he never expected to receive the honour of being the number one Underwriting Gains Award in Canada.

He attributes the success of the agency to his great staff and their really great clients.

Currently, the Vegreville Co-operators agency has around 1,500 clients who not only reside in the Vegreville area but in communities throughout Alberta.

St. Paul Board of Education Completes Electoral Ward Review ward a bylaw that would see the number of trustees reduced from seven to six as well as a redesign of its ward structure.”

Rajoo explained that the boundary changes were part of a process that was launched a couple of years ago. “It was part of a deep dive to find efficiencies two years ago and we chose to pursue this.” One other change that came as a result of the review was the elimination of the assistant superintendent position.

The elimination one trustee would realize a savings of about $28,000.

“While that not a huge amount given our overall budget, but does lead by example and show that everyone is doing their part and that we continue to prioritize the classroom,” stated Rajoo.

He told council that nothing has been written in stone and if they had any questions or concerns here was there to listen. Coun. Elroy Yakemchuk said he didn’t see a problem with the proposal.

Rajoo said they tried to align the boundaries with county boundaries as much as they could.

Range Road 90, which is two miles east of Myrnam, would encompass most of the students.

Michelle Pinon News Advertiser St. Paul Education Regional Division No. 1 has undergone an electoral ward review and is reaching out to stakeholders to brief them on the proposed changes and give them the opportunity to provide feedback.

Division C trustee Ruven Rajoo went before Two Hills County council on Nov. 18 to discuss the school division’s proposed electoral ward review.

According to the electoral ward review report, “Based on this review, the Board has brought for-

the ratepayers,” stated Rajoo.

During initial discussions Rajoo said they were wondering if it (the boundary) should it go towards the Elk Point boundary or the north boundary with the County of St. Paul, but based on the commonalities Myrnam has with Two Hills and the County of Two Hills they thought it would be prudent to keep it within those. Coun. Murray Phillips said he thought it was smart to stay with Two Hills and not Elk Point.

Reeve Don Gulayec commented that he would not want to see children in this area having to go to Elk Point. He emphasized that the boundary change needs to be parent driven, and to make sure parents are consulted because in the past parents were not consulted.

As far as where children are allowed to attend school, under the School Act, parents have the right to choose the kind of education they feel will be best for their children.

Trustees have passed first reading of the revised ward design bylaw, and second and third readings are scheduled for Dec. 9. The board must pass the bylaw before Dec. 31.

Stakeholders as well as parents and other interested parties have until the end of November to submit feedback.

St. Paul Education Regional Division No. 1 is comprised of 18 schools that includes Hairy Hill Colony School, Myrnam Outreach and Home Education Centre, New Myrnam School, Plain Lake Colony School, Two Hills School, and Two Hills Mennonite School which are located within the Vegreville News Advertiser’s circulation area.

Mundare Fire Department Receives New Safety Helmets Michelle Pinon News Advertiser One good turn deserves another. That holds true for Dale and Rhonda McCarty who decided to donate specialized safety rescue helmets for the Mundare Fire Department.

The couple were on hand to present the helmets to Fire Chief Glenda Dales on November 19. Also, on hand for the presentation were representatives from the manufacturer, Drager, and retailer, Guillevin Fire, Safety and Industrial, who lowered the purchase price of the safety helmets so they could purchase 10 instead of 6 helmets for the fire department.

Dale and Rhonda explained why they donated the helmets, saying, after they were involved in a serious motor vehicle accident in July of 2017 members of the Mundare Fire Department constructed and donated a wheelchair ramp so they would be able to easily access their front door and allow them to be able to come and go freely.

“We spent two months in the hospital.

Then we got home. And in the mean time the Mundare Fire Department had taken the initiative to build us a ramp outside of our house. We, of

course got our expenses back from the insurance company and so that’s what we’re equating that to, how much the ramp costs for the department to put it in, so we are donating that money back. And that money is being used to buy the helmets,” stated Rhonda.

Dale McCarty said the idea for donating the helmets came after a conversation he had with City of Calgary Firefighter Terry Schmitz. “Between Guillevin, who threw the ball into your guys’ court, between the corroboration of our money and you guys bringing your price down, and Guillevin bringing their price down, we were able to get it done,” said Dale.

“We were very glad it was an option for you guys and we were really glad to be involved in the initiative. I think it’s absolutely fantastic. “These safety helmets have been specially designed for vehicle extrication and intrinsically fit so nice so when I am down on my hands and knees and upside down they don’t fall off. They protect my head, plus my eyes, and all the other stuff, so we as rescuers don’t need to be rescued. We can get in tighter and smaller places than we can versus if we have our normal duty helmets on,” noted Dale. The helmets come equipped with a protective visor and flashlight.

“Classic North American style fire helmets are quite big. They’re designed to protect your head, but you go to motor vehicle incidents where firefighters having to enter a vehicle and you’ll see helmets just littered on top of the car or the ground because they can’t fit inside. So, these helmets are specifically designed for specialty service, that being vehicle extrication, specialty rescue, confined space rescue to be a smaller profile, have a more robust side impact rating, to have a better chin strap so that firefighters can stay safe while they are entering more confined spaces,” stated Magee.

Vegreville 4-H Multi Club News Kaylynn Makarenko Club Reporter The Vegreville 4-H Multi Club had their regular monthly meeting on November 16 in the basement of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Our roll call question was “What did you do on your fall break?” We talked about our Electronics fundraiser and what a success it was.

All project groups that met since our last meeting gave an update on what they did. All of the project groups plan to meet at least once before out next meeting.

We had our Halloween party at the swimming pool and we all had a lot of fun. After swimming, we all got treat bags.

We were sad to hear that the District Fall Fling that was going to be held in Wainwright was cancelled due to Covid.

A Christmas party committee was formed and will start to plan a Covid safe way to celebrate Christmas.

Our next monthly meeting will be in December.

Innisfree-Minburn 4-H Beef Club November Report Rylan Jackson Club Reporter On November 10 we had our meeting in Minburn. Besides our normal agenda we also had Tawyna Copland a 4-H parent, and a local vet of Prairie Rose Vet Services, talk to the club about lead toxicity and the negative effects that it can have on cattle. It gave us good

knowledge on one of the many reasons why it’s important to dispose of and recycle old batteries, especially around our farms.

Branded Western Wear allowed us to use of their farm facilities to do our weigh in for our projects on November 8. We had good weather this year for the day. Our members have steer, heifer,

and cow calf projects this year.

The club is very appreciative of surrounding communities who helped us in one of the biggest tire and electronic recycling collections yet! Your contributions really helpd us out, and we appreciate that very much. We collected over 2,000 tires this year!

Our next meeting will be in December.

Bus Accident Survivors Share Experiences 60 Years Later Michelle Pinon News Advertiser November 29, 1960.

The fateful winter day when a school bus and rail engine collided at the crossing north of Highway 15 on Secondary Highway 831 in Lamont killing 16 students and injuring 24 other students from Chipman who were on their way to school.

The following day one more student passed away. It was considered by many to be one of the worst tragedies in recent history. It irrevocably altered the lives of families and friends of the victims and survivors. It also had farreaching impacts as news of the tragedy made headlines throughout Canada and around the world.

“I know nothing about that day, but after, I couldn’t figure things out. I thought we had wrecked the car. I said how’d I get here, why am I here? Well, you had an accident. They didn’t want me to tell me anything because they thought I’d go into shock.

So, where’s Bob then? I want to see Bob. He’s across the hall.

So, he’s in the hospital. We must have wrecked the car. So that went on until they moved the bed over by the window FAMILY BUILT. FAMILY BACKED. where I could see the car outside. Then Serving Western Canada for Over 20 Years! of course that really got me mixed up.

Looking around David Ewasiuk was across the hall with Bob. They both had broken legs.”

Gradually Terry began to feel better.

He came home from the hospital in December but was not well enough to go back to school until the spring of 1961.

When he returned to classes things were not the same at all because so many of his schoolmates had passed away.

There was a girl right in front of me, like how close can you be when you’re in your seats, that was killed.

I remember making the turn and you know as usual the kids are talking and yacking on the bus. I remember making the turn cause it was the old old crossing which was just a narrow road and when you came up to the crossing you had to go up quite a steep embankment and then over the tracks. And when we turn the corner how the bus rocks so you of course were rocking back and forth. I don’t know why, but I remember this in my mind because we’d done it many times before. And then I remember the slow climb up the incline, and

It was unimaginable and unforgettable except for survivor Terry Cossey who has no memory of the accident.

“On Friday night I went for a drive with my buddy Bob Antoniuk in my dad’s new 1960 car. We did the usual things and did a couple of doughnuts on the ball diamond and stuff like that, and then I wake up in the hospital.

When I woke up it was Christmas time.

So, I don’t remember much about the accident other than what people have told me over the years. I had a severe

Christmas! Really!

Vegreville Christmas Bureau Submitted So much of this year has been abnormal thanks to the Novel Coronavirus, aka Covid-19, that it is hard to realize that Christmas will still happen on December 25 despite all the abnormalities. The festival will take place, one way or another.

Now, in November some folks have already hung evergreen garlands on their front doors and colourful lights will soon be outlining eaves, hedges, and fences and trees

all over town and country. There will be Santa Claus in sleighs and bright ethereal reindeer gracing front lawns and roofs (maybe).

So, despite all the necessary physical distancing and other sensible precautions, it will still be possible to enjoy the bright lights at the darkest time of year in this northern part of the northern hemisphere. It may be a challenge to enjoy the festival while maintaining a safe space for all our families but it’s a challenge that can be met with inventive solutions. We can still be sociable even with masks and at a distance.

And the Vegreville Christmas Bureau will be doing its best to keep up the Bureau’s seasonal work of getting hampers to all those families that need a festive meal. The committee has met already (physically distanced, of course). And both a storefront depot and a sorting space have been found. The operation is well underway.

As usual, gently used winter jackets, hats, gloves, and mitts are requested. Coats for Families donations are accepted at Walmart, and many businesses around town have boxes to collect toys and food items. Toys for children should be new and not wrapped. Donations in cash or cheque can be made at the depot as well as by mail.

The storefront depot operation is open now at 4933-51 Avenue (next door to Revive Studio). At the depot, you can apply for a hamper, make a donation (monetary, toys, food, gently used winter clothing), or pick up winter clothing such as coats, ski pants, toques, scarves, and gloves The deadline for both donations and hamper applications is Friday, December 11.

Hutterian Brethren Church of Vegreville (Vegreville Colony Farming Co. At that time there were no rules or regulations saying he had to stop or open the doors for visibility and when we were hit I instantly knew it was the train. I was conscious throughout everything. I remember flying through the air. To me, it felt like when you play football and you get tackled. You know with an unknown tackle all of a sudden you’re flying, you know. And then when I came to rest we were on the inside of the back of the bus which was broke-off or cut off like a bowl.

You know it looked like a salad bowl and I was inside of that with a number of other kids. There was Bob Antoniuk and David Ewasiuk and a few others and we managed to sort of tip it, rock it over.

We definitely, did not hear a whistle. Whether the train did whistle or not I don’t know. Teacher Lois Stefura, who has since passed on, was driving her car parallel to the train and

witnessed the crash. Without opening the door he (bus driver) wouldn’t have seen the train. The windows were so frosted up on the bus, he was probably barely able to see out the front windshield properly.”

Fortunately, he only had major injuries from the crash. “The only thing I had was a goose egg on the top of my Royal Canadian

head and both my knees were scraped up and bleeding. They patched up my knees and I was good.” One of the teachers contacted his parents who took him home from the hospital.

His parents and two siblings were happy and relieved to see him, and he was so thankful to be alive and with his family.

As time went on things became more difficult. “The aftershock was more difficult than the initial first day.” Funeral services were held in all three of the churches in Chipman and John attended the funeral at the Greek Orthodox Church. He said he wanted to be there as they had all been together school since grade school and played sports together. “It was a pretty close-knit community. We were all one big happy family. I missed them dearly.”

On November 27, 2010, John attended a special reunion in Chipman for the survivors. He said it was like a memorial service where you reminisce and have your joyous and your sad moments. “It was nice to get together. The wounds were still there, but most of the serious wounds were healed after 50 years.” He hopes they will be able to have another memorial service in the future.

Village of Chipman CAO Pat Tomkow, who spoke at the reunion, said, “It was an opportunity for survivors to tell what’s in their hearts, what they experienced, and how it affected them. It really helped to heal everyone.”

The Village of Chipman was entrusted with the safekeeping of a scrapbook, original newspaper articles, and photos of the funerals. “It was started by Rose Motyka who went to a seniors home and wanted the memories and documentation to be preserved.”

Sister Doloretta Celebrates 60 Years of Religious Life Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk MLA for Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville It was such an honour to congratulate Sister Doloretta Shalagan of the Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate, (SSMI) on her 60th anniversary of religious life!

She was presented with a scroll commemorating her 60 years of religious life as well as a congratulatory letter on Friday, November 6 at St. Joseph’s Home.

Premier Jason Kenney sent his greetings and congratulations to Sister Doloretta on her 60th Anniversary of Religious Life.

The SSMI has such a rich history! It was founded in Lviv, in the present Ukraine, in 1845 by Sister Josaphata Horadashevska. The SSMI arrived in Edmonton in 1902 and in the Mundare area in 1929.

In 1929, the SSMI built the Mundare General Hospital the same year they arrived. The Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate also built the present-day hospital. The SSMI, as a congregation from Ukraine, served as a bridge to help the Ukrainian settlers be understood and assisted in their native tongue. The Sisters built schools where they also taught and assisted all children to learn to speak, read, and write this difficult English language. This was of enormous assistance to these students and their families in their adjustment.

Thank you, once again, Sister Doloretta, for your selfless dedication to Christ’s teachings and for so lovingly and generously sharing them in thought, deed, word, and great love.

May God richly bless you and all the dear Sisters.

Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent Jake and Hunter Hayduk made a snow fort and a snowman on the first heavy snowfall on November 7 in Vegreville. They said they made these projects to kick off winter and to spend time with the family. Jake and Hunter both admitted that it took about three hours to make the snow fort and snowman but the whole process was a lot of fun.

DOWHANIUK, Rita Jacqueline (nee: Barrie) 1925 - 2020 It is with heavy hearts that we bid adieu to our loving and devoted Mother, Grandmother and GreatGrandmother. Rita lived a very full and happy life. Her absolute joy came from her family, friends, music, and dancing. She had a real eye for fashion and a talent for decorating, crafting, and cooking the Ukrainian meals that the family enjoyed at many gatherings.

Survived by her children, Gerald (Judy Keefe), Shirley (Dave) Howard, David (Candice Borud), Patrick (Jocelyn Lindahl); 16 Grandchildren; 14 GreatGrandchildren; brother-in-law Ralph McGrath; her Barrie and Landry cousins; and all her nieces, nephews and their families from both sides of the family. Rita’s many friends were also near and dear to her heart and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

MAKSYMIUK, Caroline Stella November 25, 1942 – November 19, 2020 On Thursday, November 19, 2020, Caroline Maksymiuk of Vegreville, Alberta, formerly of Myrnam passed away at the age of 77 years.

Caroline is survived by her loving family, children Dennis (Marian), Bruce, Dale and Brenda Zacharuk; 4 grandchildren Terri (Stephan) Bannister, Darci Maksymiuk, Mikayla Zacharuk and Reanna Zacharuk; 2 great-grandchildren Owen and Maddison Bannister; sister Anne (Ken) Chrapko; 4 sisters-in-law Carol Myshaniuk, Vicki Kornak, Rose Maksymiuk and Sonia (Nick) Sheyka. Caroline was predeceased by her husband Dick Maksymiuk; parents Peter and Pauline Myshaniuk; brother Edward Myshaniuk; sister Iris (Bill) Yaremchuk; brothers-in-law Metro Maksymiuk and Victor Kornak; parents-in-law William and Katie Maksymiuk.

A private funeral service will be held with Fr. John Lipinski officiating. Cremation will follow. Inurnment to take place at a later date in St. Peter’s CemeteryMyrnam. Memorial donations may be made to the Two Hills Health Care Centre.

ter wonderland of delightful seasonal activities to kick off the holiday season at the Outdoor Family Fun at ‘A Very Vegreville Christmas’ event on November 21.

The Town of Vegreville partnered with Vegreville and District Chamber of Commerce to host this event. Anya Langkow, Tourism, Recreation, and Culture Coordinator, said approximately 350 people attended.

“Some of the special features were the Ice on Whyte Ice Carving Demos which was brought in by Vegreville Tourism Advisory Board. We brought them in because we thought in a year where many events were canceled due to the COVID19 pandemic; this would be something unique, fun, and different for people in our community to see.

Also, Perogies and Jam and Debbie Fedoruk Singers performed some lovely Christmas carols, FCSS hosted the Take-Away Christmas Craft Corner and were helping to facilitate the snow painting, Hitch Master Hay Rides sponsored by Vegreville Agricultural Society was, there was free hot chocolate hosted by Vegreville Interact Club and donated by Tim Hortons, pictures with Santa Photo Board created by Vegreville Visual Artists, and a warming fire hosted by Vegreville Fire Department.

“What made the outdoor family fun special was we had great weather and I think families were looking for safe, fun alternatives ways to be outside and this provided that and the hot chocolate, hayrides, and families being together as well as the anticipation of the light-up really got people excited for Christmas. Overall, the response from the community was fantastic,” Langkow added.

Fill a Cruiser is an initiative by Vegreville Christmas Bureau, Town of Vegreville, Municipal Enforcement Services Department, Vegreville RCMP, and Alberta Fish and Wildlife. At this event, there was a cruiser set up at Walmart parking lot on November 16, 17, and 19 and at Canadian Tire parking lot on November 20 so that people bring toys, non-perishable items, gift cards, or financial donations.

Ken Podoborozny, Community Peace Officer with the Town of Vegreville said, “We had a blast as a group with “Fill a Cruiser with Toys” which has never been done with the enforcement agencies before.

With the families struggling financially we received very generous donations from people stopping by with cash, toys, and non-perishable items. Families wanting pictures with Santa Claus and the elves were welcomed but masks had to be worn and we tried to do social distancing, but the little kids still wanted to hug Santa or the elves.

The children were told that S/Sgt Terry Hyggen had the RCMP plane sent to the North Pole to bring Santa and his elves to Vegreville so that we could help with this toy drive. He was very upset with his two elves on the plane ride down as they were very naughty and misbehaved during the flight and they might get “coal” in their stockings if they don’t start behaving.

Santa is reminding the kids that they need to get their Christmas lists to the North Pole quickly as the elves are hard at work making toys.
