A tail-waggling trail for cancer research
This dog was given a certain scent he/she is trying to find at the Dog Detention course on October 4. (Rosanne Fortier/Photo)
Rosanne Fortier They say that a dog will risk its life for its owner, so it made sense when the Canadian Cancer Society’s fundraising efforts went to the dogs when the first Bark for Life event was held on October 4 at Vegreville’s Dog Off Leash Area. The pooches and their owners raised $4,137 for cancer research. Dogs spoke to each other in their unique language as they shook paws with their new human and canine companions. Signs from the Cancer Society were posted that read: Cancer deaths in children have
dropped by 50% since the 1950’s, Pick a fight with cancer-Know your body and get screened, Fight for
life-Fund research to outsmart cancer. “Vegreville is such a great community. The Canadian
Cancer Society supports many people in Vegreville with our programs and ser vices.” Christ y
Ravndahl-George, Revenue Development Specialist for Canadian Cancer Society said when asked why they decided to hold this event in Vegreville. “Dogs and owners were invited to walk around a track. We also had a Dog

Rev. Carolyn Woodall’s Camino Walk a faithful adventure Rosanne Fortier A spiritual life is about discovering each person’s path in life, brotherly love, sustaining faith in God while learning and growing each step of the way. Just like Lloyd Alexander noted that the journey is the treasure, the El Camino walk proved to be a similar lesson for Rev. Carolyn Woodall when she embarked on her journey at
the end of April. On September 28, Rev. Carolyn shared her adventures with a slide presentation at Camino Night at Vegreville’s United Church. Some of pilgrims rode their bikes for the 500-mile pilgrimage to Santiago but most walked the distance. Rev. Carolyn walked more than 400 km, about half the distance – all that she had
time to do. She said that she wished when she was training for the trip that she would have done more squatting with her knees because the area was quite mountainous and a challenge to walk on at times. She also obtained a lot of blisters on her feet and hurt her Achilles tendons, which still bothers her. Rev. Carolyn undertook 37 km on her longest day but

her limit was usually a 30 km trek. She commented that she walked for 10 hours in 30 degrees Celsius temperature once. Rev. Carolyn said the pharmacies in Northern Spain do a booming business in helping pilgrims and she probably spent 100 euros on bandages and insoles for her shoes. She took a St. James’s medal which she bought ahead of time, a Celtic cross that her parents gave her when she was younger, and a rock that she got in the city. She allowed everyone at the presentation to look at her passport where every place she stayed got stamped in the pilgrim’s record to prove she was at these places on the way to Santiago. Then Rev. Carolyn read the beatitudes of the pilgrims that she got from The Church of St. Stephen in Zabaldica, which said: Blessed are you if you discover the Camino opens your eyes to what is not seen, What concerns you most is not to arrive but to arrive with others, When you contemplate the Camino and you discover it is full of names and dawns, When you discover the authentic Camino began when it is completed, Your knap-sack is emptying of CONTINUED TO PAGE 17

The Association was named one of the Top 10 Canadian Economic Development Groups for a second straight year. Site Selection is a leading international publication focusing on economic development. Their annual Canadian awards and ranking of economic development groups are based on project data, regional partnerships, innovative programming, and quality of resources. “Our partnership of municipalities is dedicated to enhancing sustainable economic growth in the Heartland region,” explained Wayne Woldanski, Chair of Alberta’s I ndu s t r i a l He a r t l a nd Association. “It is rewarding to be named among the top economic development groups in the country.” The Association was formed

VVA introduces Marg Varga
VVA Submitted Marg Varga has lived in Vegreville for 34 years. After retiring from teaching, she realized that felt a missing piece to her life, with a need to be creative. She has always loved glass work of all forms. She became interested in fused glass specifically, after creating and working with an artist to make a mural for a school wall. She was hooked, so this led her to take a course on Fused Glass at Four Winds Studio in Edmonton. Marg uses Bullseye glass, which comes as transparent, opalescent and iridescent glass, in sheets, powdered, frit or as stringer.
The glass is cut and arranged and then fired in a glass kiln to varying temperatures, depending on the desired end product. Marg is experimenting with the many techniques that can be used to form fused glass. “There are so many types and colors and so many things you can do with glass,” she says. Marg’s inspiration comes in all forms from the landscapes she sees, the places she visits or from just playing around with new techniques she is learning. Some pieces just happen. She makes functional pieces such as plates, bowls, window hangers and magnets. Her work has been donated to various non-
profit groups and fund raising events. Marg has participated in local markets and shows, as well as neighbouring communities. She continues to add her time and energy into the world around her for the betterment of everyone as a whole. She can be reached at mpvarga@shaw. ca 780-632- 6091. VVA is a group of local artists supporting and promoting the visual arts in Vegreville. All interested artists are encouraged to contact mpvarga@shaw.ca for more information. The featured artist’s work can be viewed at the Centennial Public Library. Check us out on Facebook at Vegreville Visual Artists.

Detection course put on by the Dog Training Company. Dogs were given a certain scent then had to find that scent in a course and everyone had a great time with these activities.” Ravndahl-George said.
“Revenue raised from Bark for Life does benefit research against human cancer types. The Canadian Cancer Society feels once we find a cure for human cancer we will be able to find one for canine cancers.” Ravndahl-George
admitted. “Dogs are such an important part of a person’s cancer journey. Dogs truly become a family member. They allow their owner to have someone to stand by them no matter what. People on a cancer journey can talk to
their dog about anything, share their fears and a canine friend is there no matter what.” Ravndahl-George was pleased to see everyone who took part in this event.

Rosanne Fortier On October 1, St. Martin’s School held a Faith Day with a mass at St. Martin’s Church and activities and conversations with their welcome visitor Father Michael Schumacher. This day helped students to magnify and comprehend their Catholic faith on a deeper level. “I was 18 or 20 years old before I accepted the gift of faith in God. I practiced my faith before then but I didn’t really understand it. When I asked God’s forgiveness and received it, I felt like I was up in a helium balloon.” Father Michael said at the question
period. “If you want to know who is God, God is existence. Jesus is Joseph’s adopted son. Jesus is God’s son. The most important tool I hope you take home is that the foundation of prayer is to receive God’s love and pretense so we can have and maintain a relationship with God.” Afterwards, Father Michael was thanked with a standing ovation from the students. The day was capped off with a presentation of donations from the student’s Nickel Carnival which was held during the 2012/13 school year. Mr. Wieclaw, Representative from St. Vincent de Paul
Society at St. Martin’s Church received the cheque of $772 for this charity where this money will be used by the St. Vincent de Paul Society which started in 1833. Today there are one million members in this non-profit organization. This money will help the society give emergency food
hampers to people with nothing to eat, help people pay the rent who are on the verge of being evicted, donate beds to people who have nothing to sleep on. “I heard Father Michael say love many times when he was speaking about God. We show love by helping others like you did today.”
Wieclaw added. Jennifer Cheremshynski, member of Holy Trinity Church accepted $772 which will be sent through the church to an orphanage in the Ukraine which will help boys and girls who lost their parents have food, clothing, toys and school supplies.

LESSARD, Leo Jr. September 12, 1965 – October 25, 1996 In loving memory of our son, brother and uncle who passed away suddenly on October 25, 1996. Just when your life was brightest. Just when your years were best. You were called from us so suddenly. To a life of eternal rest. So sad was the parting. No one can tell. So sudden on earth the sorrow fell; The blow was hard, the shock severe. To part with one we loved so dear. They say that memories are golden. Well that may be true. But, we never wanted memories. We only wanted you. It’s said time heals all sorrow. We know that isn’t so. Because it hurts as much today. As it did eighteen years ago. Our family chain is broken. And nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one. The chain will link again. Forever loved and sadly missed by your family; Dad, Mom, Ken, Bonny, Cody, Bryce, Robbin, Judy, Jonathan, Jason, Jamie, Sheri, Thomas, Joseph and Marlee.
GORGICHUK, Leonard In loving memory of our dear son, brother and uncle who left us four years ago, October. 27, 2010. A cluster of beautiful memories, Sprayed with a million tears, Wishing God had spared you Just a few more years. Thanks for the years you gave us And the happy times we’ve shared, We only pray that when you left us You knew how much we cared. It’s lonely here without you, We miss you more each day, For life is not the same, Since you went away. Lovingly remembered and so sadly missed by Mom & Dad, Bob and family, Betty, Debbie and family.
LOOMIS, Randall Wayne October 25, 2010 4 years have gone and passed You’re so ever close in mind and heart. No further away than a picture, A smile, or a remembered phrase You live in our memorySo close in so many ways. For how often does a sunset, Bring nostalgic thoughts to mind Of moments we shared with you Of happy days gone by! Yes, memory has a magic way Of keeping you nearThe hands of time will not turn back Memories of you we will cherish You’ll be with us forever So ever close in mind and heart. Love always, Florence, Kelly and Kayla
WANDYKA, Ernest & Kaye In loving memory of our dear parents and grandparents, Ernest who passed away November 5, 2001 and Kaye who passed away October 27, 2013. We thought of you both with love today But that is nothing new. We thought about you both yesterday And all the days before that too. We think of you both in silence We often speak your names. All we have are precious memories And your pictures in our frames. Your memory is our keepsake With which we will never part. God has you both in his keeping We have you both in our hearts. So many times we needed you A million times we cried. If love could have saved you both You never would have died. In life we loved you both dearly In death we love both you still. In our hearts we hold a place No one can every fill. It broke our hearts to lose you both But you don’t go alone. For part of us went with you The day God took you home. We get strength from Dad’s (Gidee’s) favorite saying “Let’s Just Take It One Step At a Time”. Forever loved, remembered and sadly missed by their loving family: children – Audrey & Allan (Roxane) and grandchildren – Amanda (Trevor), Cody (Leah), Eric, Spencer, Sara, Kassandra, Kohl and Alan (Natasha), numerous family members and friends.

Rev. Carolyn Woodall answers the questions that citizens had after she gave a slide presentation on September 28 at Vegreville’s United Church about her El Camino walk. (Rosanne Fortier/Photo) CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2
things and your heart does not know where to hang up so many feelings and emotions, You discover that one step back to help another is more valuable than one hundred forward without seeing what is at your side, When you don’t have words to give thanks for everything that surprises you at every twist and turn of the way, If you search for the truth and make of the Camino, a life and your life away and a search of the One who is the way, the truth and the life, If on the way, you meet yourself and give yourself with time without rushing so as not to disregard the image in your hearts, If you discover that the Camino holds a lot of silence and the silence of prayer and the prayer of meeting with God who is waiting for you. Rev. Carolyn wrote in her journal the first few days, “Today I walked through sunshine and rain, wind and mud, up, up and up and then down, down and down. Walking up was very challenging until I got some protein in me and going down was challenging because I was very tired and it was very slippery. The whole distance was 25 km and the height swift from 170 meters to 1450 meters and then down again to 950 meters “My toes and knees are a little
bit sore but I have no blisters today. The hills and valleys were beautiful to see, misty green and appearing as carpet from above, sheep and cows and horses where the horses had bells around their necks that echoed across the spaces. Sometimes, I could see and sometimes the mist and rain stole all the sight immediately in front of me. “I am in an old albergue (a big stone shed) essentially with 110 beds in one room. People are mostly quite friendly and it’s interesting how they know several languages but not English and they don’t know our geography or even our tar sands. Dinner was at 7 p.m. The pilgrim’s meal was pasta, a whole fish each with fries, a yogurt and water with red wine. At 8 p.m. I attended the pilgrim’s mass and received communion and the traditional pilgrim’s blessing. Then I had to repack and check my clothing for dryness. The lights went out to go to sleep at 10 p.m. Rev. Carolyn said there is a lot of rain in Northern Spain and it is a country of rivers, not lakes and the area is quite mountainous. When she went on the Camino walk, it was the 800th anniversary of when St. Francis of Assisi went on the Camino.
Everywhere in Northern Spain has a statue of Mother Mary with Jesus as a toddler on her lap, called Santa Maria. “The way is called the way of St. James by the stars, so pilgrims are like the Wise Men journeying to see the Christ Child. Scholars suggest it may have been two years from the time the star appeared to their
arrival, so Jesus was a toddler then,” Rev. Carolyn said. “On the way, there are a lot of shrines to represent the many pilgrims who died when they were taking the Camino walk. “The walk is a holy thing for most people. On the hill, I was struggling because my feet were very sore and the blisters had developed and my toenails were lifting and a young woman from Holland came over and she gave me cotton batting out of her personal supplies. Then she showed me how to put it on. That was an amazing gift because she was giving out of what she had for her own feet. “It’s a spiritual thing not only for the Camino walkers but for all the people who live in Spain because they wish the walkers well.” Rev. Carolyn added. There were sign posts and old stone marks that said if people were on the right path and how much further they needed to go and there were arrows on walls that directed them where to go next. Scallop’s shells were used for direction signs. “One of the strangest things
about the trip was from March until October the people from Northern Spain allow hundreds of people to walk through their yards. Often, we walked through farm yards which made sense because neighbors put all their farm buildings together and if you had to protect yourselves, you put all the people in the middle and you lined-up all your farm equipment. It meant the road went right through the yard.” Rev. Carolyn said. It was noted that everyone can do the way however they like and everyone has a different way of doing it, there is no judgment in the process. Rev. Carolyn received the Compostella which is a certificate of accomplishment for completing the way. Rev. Carolyn then answered all the citizen’s questions and they were invited to a meal of Spanish cuisine. Rev. Carolyn said that they ate lots of tuna (a staple on lettuce salad), olives, baguette, chocolate or crème caramel pudding, vino tinto (red wine), and chocolates and nuts were everywhere.

EIPS’Students Continue to Show Top Results in PAT’s Elk Island Schools Submitted Elk Island Public School (EIPS) students who wrote Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs) in June 2014 have something to celebrate today – great results. Recently, Alberta Education released province-wide PAT results. A significant number of Grade 6 and Grade 9 students who wrote these tests achieved the Acceptable Standard in all subject areas. EIPS students far exceeded provincial averages for the percent of students who achieved the Acceptable Standard and the Standard of
Excellence. Of particular note, 91 per cent of Grade 6 students achieved the Acceptable Standard in English Language Arts with 24 per cent of those students achieving the Standard of Excellence. In Grade 6 Science, greater than 37 per cent of students achieved the Standard of Excellence. Additionally, 20 per cent and more of Grade 9 students achieved the Standard of Excellence in all four core subject areas, with close to 30 per cent achieving at the Excellence level. The PATs are a snapshot of student achievement from the
Alberta Program of Studies in: Grade 6 English Language Arts, French Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Grade 9 English Language Arts, French Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Knowledge and Employability. “Our students and staff have worked very hard, and these results are evidence of that,” explains EIPS Board Chair Trina Boymook. “We are proud of both our students and staff in their accomplishments, and are pleased to see continued success in all areas of study.” The results from the PATs

can be used to inform student achievement of curricular outcomes in the respective programs, future teacher practice, future school planning, and future school board planning. Analysis of the results allows teachers, schools and school boards to focus on both areas of strength and areas that require further reflection and investigation. Of particular note, EIPS students in both English 30-1 and 302, along with students in Social Studies 30-1 and 30-2 significantly exceeded provincial averages in the acceptable category. “Our students and staff have worked very hard, and should be very proud of these results,” said EIPS Board Chair Trina Boymook. “It is very motivating for students and staff to see their hard work pay off, and we are proud to see con-
tinued success in all areas of study.” A Standard of Excellence result refers to students who demonstrate a mastery of the core subject material. An Acceptable Standard refers to students who demonstrate an understanding of the subject material. EIPS is one of Alberta’s largest school divisions, serving over 16,600 students in 42 schools. We are proud to be an integral part of our communities including Sherwood Park, Fort Saskatchewan, Vegreville, Strathcona and Lamont Counties, and the western portion of the County of Minburn.

“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes a Canadian and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. “But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet a Canadian, and nothing but a Canadian… “There can be no divided alliance here. “Any man who says he is a Canadian, but something else also, isn’t a Canadian at all. We have room for but one flag, the Canadian flag… “And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the Canadian people.” - Sir Wilfred Laurier on immigration and Canadian citizenship, circa 1907
