One individual, (a Mr. Schaeffer) was sworn in as a council member in the US while wearing a colander. Another, in Austria has his official government ID photo taken with similar head wear.

Finally, if you are ready to take the ultimate plunge, you can buy yourself a pirate ship on the Potomac River. Former Loudoun County firefighter Daniel Corder is selling the pictured transformed house boat for $49,000 USD. Tell me what you think. Email me at abletters@newsadvertiser.com

Some advice is to talk in a deep, gravelly voice, grunt and growl a lot, use insults abundantly, yell “arr!” every now and then, mumble incoherently from all the rum you’ve drunk, slur your words, give up g’s and v’s in most words, and replace “you” and your“ with “ye” and “yer”. However, if you are in customer service, you may want to forego the insults.

Thankfully, for our entertainment there are some people out there that didn’t miss the festivities in Arrrgust (August). You can find a few stories in the news reels about community events that I’m sure were thoroughly enjoyed. There are also some upcoming dates favorable to swashbucklers.

is the leader of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster of B.C. Yes, you read that right. They are the CFSMBC and their followers are known as Pastafarians. I won’t go into detail about the CFSM at it would undoubtedly be offensive to some, but they are making some headlines.Members all over the world have argued (and won) that their religion’s head wear of either the three-cornered hat, known as a pirate’s tricorn or a pasta colander can be worn for official ceremonies or photos.

Mr. Smith is arguing that it is his right to express his religion and this is protected under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. He has taken his fight to the Supreme Court of B.C. and when he submitted a request for files the ICBC had related to him, Pastafarianism or the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, he received back 691 pages of heavily redacted documents. The story goes on and Dread Pirate Higgs has even put out a “call to arms” of sorts, suggesting that on International Talk Like a Pirate Day, all the Pastafarians show up at the ICBC and demand that their driver’s license photos be taken while wearing the official religious headgear of either the tricorn hat or a colander. That brings me to International Talk Like a Pirate Day. You have a few days to warm up in front of a mirror before September 19 rolls around. What better way to start a new week than talking like a pirate. If you have kids, you can wake them up a hearty “Arrrr… time to get up matey.” You may even have a bucko or two or an old salt you know who would appreciate the effort.

You didn’t think I was going to write about actual pirates and their scourge on international shipping did you? There is also TV & movie piracy, software piracy and in some countries, power pirates. Oh, and we can’t forget the very trendy “porch pirates” who steal packages left on people’s doorsteps. While those are all worthy topics, they will have to wait for another day.

Places like the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands and the Scandinavian countries are democratic constitutional monarchies. The monarch reigns but doesn’t rule, and exercises no effective political power. I don’t see any evidence that their governance is in any way inferior to that found in republics.

True, the concept of hereditary monarchy goes against the modern grain. It seems like a throwback to an ancient time less enlightened than ours.

Does having a monarch as head of state work? What would we replace it with? And why do we think the replacement would be an improvement?

When it later came time to acquire Canadian citizenship, the oath’s explicit inclusion of allegiance to the monarch didn’t cause any difficulty. After all, the privilege of being allowed to join a new country requires respecting its institutions. If you won’t do that, you should stay home.

I have great respect for the way in which Elizabeth performed her role. It would’ve been hard to find a more diligent and conscientious head of state. But that hasn’t translated into an emotional connection to the Crown as an institution.

By the same token, I’ve no antipathy to the Crown. It doesn’t raise any historical hackles or touch any philosophically sensitive buttons. To me, the relevant questions are practical.

In fact, constitutional monarchies are inherently adept at separating the head of state function from the political process. Whatever one’s personal opinion of the monarch, you don’t have to worry about the position being occupied by some politician who is past their sell-by date but still carries the partisan baggage of a political career.

Realistically, Queen Elizabeth II’s death at age 96 wasn’t a surprise. But it still came as a jolt, the impact being accentuated by the apparent suddenness of her final decline. For many, such as my Toronto-born wife, Elizabeth’s 70-year reign as Queen of Canada rendered her a benign presence who symbolized continuity in a changing and sometimes turbulent world.

Scott Calder, District Chief for Lamont and Chipman, said, “Heroes In The Sky began in 2009. It was more of an Alberta initiative through Firefighters First back in the day. We would sell calendars and try and raise money, and initially we would put people up on a structure and we wouldn’t come down until that money wasSinceraised.then it’s evolved into more of a hero’s event and we do a barbecue, have raffles and do demonstrations. We’ve try to throw a few different things in there to draw more people. So, they’re not seeing the same thing over and over again. The vehicle extrication is a highlight for people. We’ve been doing that for the past five or six years now.

A further attack was made on the Pentagon in Washington DC and a fourth plane was crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. A total of 2,977 people died on Sept. 11, 2001 as a direct result of these attacks. Included in these numbers 415 were emergency workers who responded to the World Trade Centre. As many, if not more than that number have died or will die from illnesses resulting from the response. These people were doing their jobs.

The second reason is that beginning 2012, the second Sunday of September, the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Memorial Ceremony is held in Ottawa. This is to honour any firefighter line of duty deaths, (LODD) that have occurred in the prior Currently, year.there are 1,748 names on the memorial. The first recognized LODD recorded in Canada is firefighter William Thornton, Toronto ON, Nov. 24, 1848. The most recent firefighter, Stephen Rayfield, Castor, AB, Feb. 4, 2022. The goal is to have no new names added to the memorial.”

Herman Sieker, President of the Friends of Lamont Firefighters Society, said, “The purpose of the Friends of Lamont Firefighting Society is to assist in providing training, education, safety and wellness to the first responders in the community. The people that are here today that are first responders do no less.”

Heroes in the Sky fundraiser that was held on Sept. 10 netted $3,000 for the Friends of the Lamont Firefighters Society.

Sieker said they chose the Saturday closest to Sept. 11 to host the event for two significant reasons. First, on Sept. 11, 2001, the United States of America was

attacked by terrorists. Among other things, the twin towers of the World Trade Centre in New York City were struck by hijacked commercial airlines, resulting in the collapse of both.

There was sadness with the passing of the Queen and the end of a reign which was all I had known my entire life, especially as someone whose grandfather came over from Britain. So, there was a somberness as we watched so many tributes and protocols to respect for her passing.

Poilievre gave his first speech to caucus on Sept. 12 and stated, “Our mission: Fight Trudeau’s tax hikes and inflationary deficits to protect your paycheques and savings.” He even sang Happy Birthday to his young child Cruz and blew out the candles on his cake with his wife by his side.

Ruptash, who was the Mayor of Vegreville, recalls being very nervous before Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip arrived at the town’s famous pysanka for an official welcoming ceremony on Aug. 2,“It1978.was a day I’ll never forget,” said Ruptash. The event was being broadcast worldwide and there were many considerations to ensure everything ran smoothly that day. One of those considerations was ensuring there were no goose droppings on the pad underneath the pysanka were they would be standing. They also had to lock the pysanka in place so it would be in the perfect position for the cameras that would be capturing the proceedings.

Ruptash said he was saddened to hear of the Queen’s passing and reminisced about that unforgettable day. “It was an honour.” His daughter Lara presented the Queen with flowers that was a special touch. The Queen was also presented a gold framed replica of Vegreville’s pysanka surrounded by eight other colourful eggs written by Elizabeth Sembaliuk.JoyceZiegler never met the Queen, but said her daughter did as she was with the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides that served as honour guide at the airport before taken in a motorcade to the Elks/Kinsmen Park. Joyce and her husband David lived on 50 Street and watched the motorcade drive by their home. She said lots of family and friends came over to visit that day, including her Grade 1 teacher. Joyce said she always respected the Queen and said she was well revered and admired.

“One thing I do remember about her visit to Alberta that time was that her and Prince Phillip travelled by train,” said Vegreville resident Rod Stewart. John was a kind, patient man with strength like no other. He led by example, took advantage of every teaching opportunity and was quick to share his best advice; be it vehicle troubles, garden tips, or what to have for weekly family dinner. John’s zest for life was unmatched and he was never “too old” to learn something new. He truly treasured the simple things and was often found outside soaking up the sun, feeding his birds and enjoying the fresh air. John had a spunky sense of humor and was rarely spotted without his smile; we will miss that the most.

A celebration of life will take place Saturday, September 24, 2022 at Grace United Church, Fellowship Hall, Wainwright, Alberta at 1:00 pm.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Kitt, formerly of Ranfurly, Alberta who passed away, peacefully at St. Joseph’s General Hospital in Vegreville on Thursday, September 8, 2022 at the age of 94, 9 days short of her 95th birthday.

STOSKI, Dean Allan

HNYDYK, Jennie It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Jennie Hnydyk on September 11, 2022, at the age of 84

Anne was a devoted Wife, Mom and Baba. She took pride in caring for her family and welcomed everyone into her home. She was never too busy for a visit and the coffee pot was always on. Anne’s hands were never idle. In her 96 years, she probably pinched a million perogies - her last batch being Christmas 2021. Anne enjoyed gardening and canning, feeding the birds, baking and decorating cakes, making silk flowers, crocheting and knitting. Many people enjoyed the fruits of her labour - be it good food, special occasion cakes and silk flowers or a knitted or crocheted item. She enjoyed a good card game and never lost her competitive edge or her ability to add up a score, in her head, faster than anyone could tally on paper. In later years, she loved watching game shows, hockey and football. We will miss her feisty personality, her caring manner and her presence at the perogy pinching table.

Ann Chomlak. Jennie always said they took after their Grandpa (Ron) when it came to humour and Afterlaughter.retirement, Jennie kept herself busy with volunteering (Christmas Bureau, U.C.W.L. & Hospital Auxiliary). Ron & Jennie had a love of travel, and they travelled all over the world, including Europe, Ukraine, Poland, South America, Africa, Northwest Territories & Singapore. Jennie’s most favourite things to do were puzzle books, shopping, bingo and a wide variety of crafts.

General Manager for Vegreville Vipers Bryan Brown said, “The camp went pretty good we ended up having 36 kids at Wecamp.had hockey players from Ukraine, Croatia, Slovakia, and in Alberta from Calgary, Pincher Creek, Medicine Hat,

Edmonton, Dayton Valley, and Edson. Also, we had players from Saskatoon and Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan.

This main camp is to get the right selection of players to play in our town; some don’t blend in with others. I give all players an evaluation when they leave. I let them know if they’re released from the camp and won’t continue on. It gives them something to work at to bring them up to the potential needed to play Jr A

Historian Robert Tombs described Elizabeth’s June 1953 coronation as “the first global television event and the last great aristocratic and imperial flourish, where ermine and coronets mingled with turbans and slouched hats, with Churchill in the silks and feathers of a Knight of the Garter.” And a contemporary article in the Sociological Review asserted that it produced “a degree of moral unity equalled by no other national state.”

The House of Windsor’s position over the coming decades remains to be determined.Asfor Elizabeth herself, British columnist Brendan O’Neill, a fervent republican, expressed “a great sense of loss” at her death. He put it this way: “She embodied values that are at risk of extinction.
