Mother City Moving Up In Travel Ranks Cape Town is celebrating after moving up from last year’s eleventh spot to a single digit, fourth place, in the annual Conde Nast Traveler Readers Choice Awards.

Cape Town hotels also fared well, with several top Cape Town properties making the list of Best Hotels in Africa.

The one million votes from close to 77 000 Conde Nast Traveler readers, contributed to putting Cape Town into the mix as a global favourite.

Just beyond Cape Town, Bushmanskloof in the Cederberg fared very well, being recognised as number six on the list of Africa’s Top 20 Best Safari Lodges and Camps, number four on the list of Best Resorts in South Africa and as number 41 on the Top 100 Hotels in the World list.

Cape Town was also voted in as the #8 Friendliest City in the World; an accolade that supports the opinion of Tripadvisor users when they voted Cape Town second in line as the City with The Most Helpful Locals in the 2014 Tripadvisor World City Survey.

Since its inception in 1998, the Eat Out Restaurant awards have grown in both size and stature, and it is considered South Africa’s most authoritative and glamorous gastronomic event to celebrate South Africa’s chefs, restaurants and the culinary industry.

The winners of the Best Steakhouse, Best Asian Restaurant, Best Italian Restaurant, Best Country-style Restaurant and Best Everyday Eatery, as well as the winner of the Boschendal Style Award and Nederburg Rising Star Award, will also be honoured at the awards ceremony.

This year Abigail Donnelly, Eat Out editor and judge for the annual restaurant awards, was supported by five anonymous judges, whose identities will be revealed on awards night. In keeping with feedback received from restaurants, chefs, and the public, the winners were selected by a panel of South African judges with varied experience and backgrounds relating to the food and restaurant industry.

The judges have been eating at restaurants across the country to determine the nominees and each judge scored restaurants individually. The restaurants are scored on food, service and ambience, thus taking into account various aspects that make for an ideal dining experience.

Rust en Vrede Restaurant

Paarl and Wellington Restaurants become StreetSmart Paarl and Wellington have become the latest towns to join StreetSmart SA, a national fundraising initiative for the upliftment of street children.

The Paarl and Wellington chapter of StreetSmart was launched at a cocktail event at The Light House Boutique Suites, Courtrai, Paarl.

StreetSmart SA, is a non-profit organisation dedicated to family reunification and the upliftment of street children and has raised more than R8,6 million over the past nine years.

Participating restaurants raise funds through encouraging diners to add R5 to their table’s bill, completely

voluntary and diners can decline or add more if they wish. Every cent raised in StreetSmart restaurants is dedicated to support organisations that run educational and family reunification programmes for street children within their own communities.

Pioneering the way as the first Paarl Restaurant to become StreetSmart, is Glen Carlou Restaurant, who joined this initiative way back in June 2009. At the launch Georgie Prout, Public Relations Manager at Glen Carlou Wine Estate, appealed to other Paarl and Wellington restaurants to follow suit and make a real difference to children in need in their area.

StreetSmart SA, launched by Biggs under the patronage of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu in 2005, currently has 90 participating restaurants throughout the Western Cape and Gauteng.

StreetSmart's goal is to be part of the process of social normalisation and to encourage the public not to give money into the hands of a child as this keeps them on the streets.

In essence, eating and donating at a StreetSmart restaurant is the responsible way to help a street child.

Distell’s premium brandy category showed its muscle at the Veritas Awards, held in Cape Town in October, with six products winning Gold medals and two winning Double Golds.

Judges of the country’s most prestigious wine competition saw fit to award Double Gold medals to Oude Meester Demant and Van Ryn’s 15 Year Old, and Gold medals to Klipdrift Gold, Oude Meester Souverein 18 Year Old, Van Ryn’s 10 and 12 Year Olds, Richelieu International and Richelieu 10 Year Old. Klipdrift recently updated the brand to embody Gold in Every Drop, Van Ryn’s celebrates the craftsmanship aspect of centuries-old brandy making traditions, while Oude Meester showcases the Mastery that goes into making these exquisite products. “Awards like these help support the messages conveyed to the public about our brands. It reinforces our belief that South Africa has the best brandies in the world and that this is an underestimated category in the international spirits market,” said Distell Brandy Ambassador Nick Holdcroft.

The Africa Mercy, the world’s largest civilian hospital ship docked at Quay 6 outside the Table Bay Hotel at the V & A Waterfront from 29 September to 15 October. The purpose of the layover in Cape Town was to finalise all their preparations before continuing on its route to Madagascar for its next field service. During the layover the ship was open for 3 days for the public to visit.

Each year Mercy Ships has more than 1 600 volunteers from more than 40 nations, including South Africa. Professionals including surgeons, dentists, nurses, healthcare trainers, teachers, cooks, seamen, engineers and agriculturalists donate their time and skills to the effort.

FoodPods recently hosted a community volunteer day with students from Kayamandi High School and Paul Roos Gymnasium. About 40 students and Heart Capital interns came together for a fun afternoon of team building, games, music, and hard work!

Taylor Holland, FoodPods Kayamandi Project Manager, summarized the day, “Foodpods is a community-centered project, so we wanted to host a volunteer day that brought together the diverse youth of the Stellenbosch community."

With a little friendly competition, the students from both high schools successfully cleaned up and prepared FoodPod’s Kayamandi site and helped another Heart Capital venture- Wonder Plant- with inventory management.

A lot of work was completed, while new friendships and partnerships were made while Musician Casper Ace volunteered his talents for the afternoon and stated, "What FoodPods is doing is basically seeding future cooperation of the next generation."

“I saw this as a second chance,” says Blain. He completed his undergraduate degree with 10 distinctions and went on to do his honours.

The Maties who exceled academically despite challenging socio-economic conditions, limited opportunities or disability was officially announced at the annual Rector’s Awards for Outstanding Achievement. These awards recognised students who excel in academics, sports, culture, community interaction, service and leadership. The three students received bursaries of R85 000 which will enable them to build on their academic success.

The Student Representative Council’s Award for Outstanding Alumni was presented to venture capitalist and wine enthusiast, Michael Jordaan. Jordaan, the former CEO of FNB, now heads up a private investment company, Montegray Capital. He was also the guest speaker at the prestigious event.

Pebbles Project Reaches Major Milestone

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Pebbles Project who have established themselves firmly within the wine industry as an organisation which aims to enrich the lives of children from disadvantaged backgrounds with special educational needs.

Started as a tiny pebble by Sophia Warner who came to South Africa from the UK with a 13-year background in special needs teaching, the organization has developed into a much larger pebble, all thanks to the support of the wine industry and other role players.

The Pebbles Project was started in 2004 with the main emphasis on children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, but after a lot of research and advice from local specialists, they widened their scope to support the holistic development of children.

Currently the Food for Thought Nutrition Programme provides breakfast, lunch and two snacks a day for 110 children within the Pebbles Project organisation and the goal within the next few months is to have 250 children benefitting from this programme.

Launched in late 2013 the Owethu Clinic currently offers health services to eight farms with a total of 792 children on the Hello Health Database. Established as a result of a major donation of clinic infrastructure from the Cipla Foundation and support from Villiera wine farm, the clinic offers a free service to the children, with adults paying a nominal monthly contribution, from neighbouring farms in the form of basic medical and dental services, family planning and wellness programmes.

Height cuisine from beef tea to Burgers It was an idea which made Imperial Airways’ Silver Wing flights famous and over 85 years later is still the benchmark by which many travellers judge an airline’s onboard service.

In 1927, British Airways’ predecessor, Imperial Airways, removed two seats from the Argosy aircraft it operated on the London/Paris route to allow a steward to serve food on board. It was the first in-flight meal service.

Although the fare was simple; sandwiches or biscuits, beef tea, and a choice of beer, whisky or mineral water - passengers considered the idea of being served a meal in flight the height of luxury. Today for full-service airlines in-flight catering remains integral to the flying experience and getting it right is a science.

Altitude was not a problem 85 years ago, as aircraft flew relatively low were not pressurised. A modern jet aircraft cruises at around 35 000 feet and the cabin is pressurised to 8 000 feet. Under these conditions you lose about 30% of your ability to taste, so food can seem bland or insipid.

The airline calls the approach it has adopted to counter the effects of altitude, lower humidity and other sensory inhibitors in aircraft cabins, Height Cuisine.

It uses ingredients which are high in umami, a savoury flavour known as the ‘fifth taste’, which occurs naturally in foods such as seaweed, tomatoes, mackerel and parmesan cheese and works particularly well in catering at altitude.

British Airways took this research forward by developing World Traveller menus that included citrus juices and spices in Indian chicken tikka and rich umami of tortellacci with tomato and olives. An umami-rich First menu might include British fillet of beef with herb crust, summer vegetables, char-grilled fondant potatoes and a horseradish, dill and chive sauce.

The concept of Height Cuisine isn’t limited to making food taste better and paring it with suitable wines. It’s a holistic concept that extends to the choices customers have as well as how the food is served.

First Liquid Nitrogen Ice-Cream Store Open its Doors in Cape Town N2IceCream, South Africa’s very first liquid nitrogen ice cream has opened its doors in Parklands, Cape Town.

Located at the Emporium in Sandown Road, Parklands, N2IceCream is a small lab themed kiosk doing extraordinary things. Wearing white lab coats and protective gloves N2IceCream brrr-isters can be seen combining ice cream with science while making ice cream from scratch once an order is placed.

“Liquid nitrogen is so cold and freezes so fast that it reduces the size of ice crystals which form ice cream. Smaller ice crystals create smoother ice cream.”

Success begins in the vineyards at Kleine Zalze

To RJ Botha, the chemistry behind wine- and beer making is the reason he enrolled as a B.Sc. student at Stellenbosch University.

In the Newspaper’s interview RJ revealed that he had no formal farming experience before heading off to Stellenbosch University, yet, after 4 years he was one of three students in his class of 40 who successfully completed a B.Sc. degree, and employed immediately.

His winemaking career started off at Natida Cellars in Durbanville. RJ took two trips to France during employment at Natida. During his first visit he followed an internship at Château Angelus in St Emelion Bordeaux, and during his second trip he and his wife, also a winemaker, engaged in harvesting Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon and limited Muscadel for a period of four months where after they travelled the whole of France, a portion of Italy and up to Switzerland before returning to South Africa.

During his time as Winemaker at Nitida Cellars, he won countless medals for his wines at a host of local and international shows and events. In 2010 RJ was named Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year for the Nitida Calligraphy.

During late 2012 RJ was challenged with making a tough decision. Staying with Nitida, or taking up the offer as winemaker at Kleine Zalze. Having been the Winemaker with a rather smaller family-owned wine estate, he took up the challenge and moved to join a larger family-owned wine estate.

“Kleine Zalze is one of the most renowned winemaking cellars in South Africa and I am very happy that I joined the winemaking team. Kobus Basson established a wonderful winery. Ambition at Kleine Zalze is at the order of the day,” says RJ Botha.

The Vineyards Kleine Zalze Wine Estate has about 80 ha under vineyards. They also manage 2 other farms of 120 ha. In total they manage about 200 ha with a yield in the order of 2 200 tons – 2 800 tons. The terroir at Kleine De Zalze is suitable for excellent Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz production.

Being the winemaker he prefers to harvest “bush vine” Chenin Blanc of age which they get mostly from Stellenbosch and some from “Agter Paarl”. The older the “bush vine” the better the quality. As Winemaker they also visit other grape producing farms from Lutzville, Darling, Durbanville, Walker Bay, and Somerset West, and select only the best toward their Sauvignon Blanc label from these areas.

Winemaking Varieties Kleine Zalze’s mainstream winemaking varieties are Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Cabernet.

Kleine Zalze produce their Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon in 3 different tiers. The top of the range is the Family Reserve Selection - the show wines, followed by the Vineyard Selection - the more food related wines for restaurants, and the Cellar Selection - the entry level wines.

Cabernet Sauvignon Family Reserve - The wine shows sweet, rich, dark fruit and berry-plum aromas with well integrated French oak tannin.

The 2010 vintage is a vintage of fruit and this wine has a great length on the palate with alluring combination of spicy, plum fruit.

The famous local musician Camillo Lombard will bring a true Cape flavour to the event. He will also direct when the choir sings two of his songs.

A preview to the main concert will be done by the Bosch ensemble, a group of 20 singers from the Libertas choir, under the guidance of prof. de Villiers.

With piano and accordion by Gerhard Niemand, the choir will in addition sing famous songs from the movies and some of the most popular hits from the Afrikaans music treasure.

Since the choir’s establishment in 1989 they have maintained their vision for transformation and musical excellence in the past 25 years.

They are admired worldwide and people appreciate and enjoy their music.

The choir reflects the kaleidoscope of South Africa’s society through their music and members who exceed boundaries of culture, race, social status and religion.

According to prof. de Villiers the choir was established to promote a spirit of trust and unity and the choir also shows the “Rainbow Nation in Harmony”.

The Stellenbosch Libertas choir also shared in the striking 20 Years of Democracy a Choired Taste performance which was attended by 5000 music lovers in the Grandwest Arena in August.

On 11 October 2014 Pinotage, South Africa’s national wine, made history by celebrating the first International Pinotage Day - an event to be celebrated annually on the second Saturday of October.

Tim Collins, Front of House Manager, welcomed guests to their table and presented a tray of appetizing Pinotage bread. As a starter a choice of either Bobotie Spring rolls with Pinotage apple, or oysters with cold Pinotage was served. As a main course a selection of Cob served with vanilla saffron and Pinotage/Chenin butter sauce, a Pinotage Burger, Matured Rump with Pinotage jus, or Chicken pasta with tomato based Pinotage sauce was served.

The inauguration of the first International Pinotage Day is proof of the effort by the South African Pinotage Winemakers’ patriotism in aggressively promoting Pinotage - a uniquely developed South African grape variety, providing wines of superior quality.

Various wine estates in the Western Cape, such as Simonsig, Neethlingshof, Kanonkop, Diemersdal, Longridge, Welbedaght, Clos Malvern, KWV, Bon Courage, Nuy, Fairview, Mervida Wines, Deetlefs Estate, Bergsig Estate, Spier, De Waal Wine, Rijks, Avontuur, Mellasat Vineyards, Landskroon, Temple Wines, and many more, joined in the celebrations, each at their own estate.

The highlight of the menu was the Chocolate Mousse Cake with Pinotage Gelato and Dark Belgium Chocolate Pinotage Cream.

To the Beer drinkers Pinotale, a Pinotage infused Craft Ale, was served.

Other drinks served to patrons included Pinotage Dom Pedro, Pinotage Milkshakes, and not to mention the variety of Beyerskloof wines.

On the International front the Michelin-starred restaurant Hertog Jan in Bruges, in Belgium, joined in the celebrations allowing their customers a glimpse of the Pinotage magic. Even General Francisco Furtado of the Humpata Highlands in Angola uncorked a Pinotage Diesel at his residence in Luanda and joined the celebration.

Three others, Murgado an Angolan, George, a Portuguese, and Koos, a Sourth African, laid hands on a bottle red wine labeled JP, renamed it Jolly Pinotage, and from Quinta Crescent in Angola celebrated a “Jolly Pinotage Day.”

CELEBRATION The Newspaper joined Beyers Truter and his Beyerskloof team in celebrating this prestigious event. To Beyers, the chairperson of South Africa’s Pinotage Association, the International Pinotage Day is not just about talking, but rather, about doing, and that is precisely what materialized at Beyerskloof’s Red Leaf Restaurant - everything on offer was structured around Pinotage.

The day provided many exciting moments. Patrons could taste their popular Pinotage, Pinotage Blends as well as some older superb vintage wines. Live entertainment filled the day, and a guest performance by local legend Koos Kombuis entertained the guests with his very own Pinotage song.

The Red Leaf Restaurant presented their guests a Pinotage infused lunch menu – a gastronomic experience par excellence presented by the Chef Frank Menezes.

The Art of Mosaic - Putting together broken pieces

The Newspaper recently met Karen Costigian, an “Organic Mosaic” artist and the founder of Organic Mosaics. She lives art founded on the principle of brokenness.

Everything that comes her way reflects the simple stature of an art derived from brokenness unto healing.

To Karen mosaic is her life. She goes to bed at night sleep-thinking mosaics, and will wake up still pondering on mosaics.

Life took a sudden turn fifteen years ago when Karen lost her husband, aged 38.

Stranded as a single mother with two young children, she was left with no alternative, but, to find a new source of income to sustain life for her and her children.

Karen is drawn to the textural and reflective qualities of tiles and love the majestic enchantment of colour that comes with these pieces, a phenomenon which resulted in her exploring mixed media.

Recycling is part of her art in mosaic.

Collecting materials is a huge part of being a mixed media mosaic artist.

Karen loves working with recycled material as she constructs the various items from discarded objects.

In reality, Karen is recycling as she develops her mosaic masterpieces. She calls it, ‘Planned recycling’.

Her love for found objects is fulfilled in both mediums. Interesting items will sometimes be discovered in her works of art such as old taps, or even a piece of driftwood collected from a lonely stretch of beach.

She loves to teach others the art in mosaic. To get her hands dirty with the grout gives her great joy. “My hands talk for me,” she says.

Karen says, “There have been many moments in my life that I have felt broken like mosaic pieces, and, I have come to the knowledge that I needed love and understanding to gather together the broken pieces.

“My children Janine, Ryan, and son in law Phillip, means the world to me and we have realized what loss is, and how precious every little aspect of life is – every moment is valuable, just like the mosaic pieces. To someone discarding broken items is acceptable, but to me, using the broken object in creating something new; be it a beautiful masterpiece made from brokenness.”

Karen does not believe in boundaries, simply because she is always moving them. Since meeting Willie Schmidt, the owner of Aspidistra Garden Centre she discovered that her boundaries have moved even further.

Willie has supported her by buying her mosaic masterpieces, and secondly, has made her think outside her comfort zone - pushing her to new boundaries.

Karen is a self-taught artist. She was born and raised in Cape Town, and became interested in mosaics when she started gathering different objects together. The first time she nipped a tile, she knew her search for what God wanted her to do, had become a truthful reality.

“Being a mosaic artist makes me feel inspired to gracefully put colourful jigsaw puzzles together each day.

My first ever mosaic was on a glass jar that didn’t have the artistic impact I visualized, yet I enjoyed the creative release it provided. My desire in creativity escalated.

I have a passion for creating and making something that once was broken, whole again,” Karen continues.

It may be claimed that not one of her artistic mosaic pieces are the same.

Her claim to fame is that her mosaic journey continued with broken china. The art of pique assiette allows her to give new life to damaged or discarded china. Karen prefers to use a variety of china plates, both old and new, and views it as the past in relation to the present. Brokenness becoming reshaped, an art brought together to form lasting wholeness.

Karen comes up with the most amazing ideas. Nothing is too small or too big to mosaic, and just about anything can be developed around mosaics.

You will find Karen’s mosaic masterpieces at the Aspidistra Garden Centre located on the corner of R310, known as Baden Powell Road, and Vlaeberg Road, near Stellenbosch.

The mosaic masterpieces include a collection of unique mosaic mushrooms, one of a kind mosaic stepping stones, bird baths, mosaic flower pots, mosaic urns and many more interesting mosaics are on display at the garden centre.

Barrydale Hand Weavers bringing beautiful creations to your home Carol Morris, owner of Barrydale Hand Weavers, has been involved in fabric craft for the past 30 years. In 2007 she decided to move to the quaint town of Barrydale, on Route 62 where she started the weaving business, training local community members the skill of weaving on wooden hand looms in the old fashioned way.

Carol lived on a cotton producing farm in Swaziland many years ago where she learned the skill of cotton harvesting, cotton cleansing, the hand spinning of yarn, and the knitting of products.

During that time Carol represented Swaziland at a Trade Show in Germany, and asked Tivane Mavuma, who was weaving carpets for another company to make woven products which she took along to the Trade Show. That’s where the whole weaving business started.

The art of hand weaving was brought to Barrydale when Tivane Mavuma arrived from Swaziland and joined her in 2007 adding to the business his loom and his knowledge of the weaving arts.

Today he is the head weaver, production manager and also trains, previously unskilled people, unto becoming new weavers in the same techniques with great passion and care.

Since 2007 Carol’s mission is to train local people in the art of hand weaving on looms and produce beautiful hand woven rugs, carpets, tableware, fabrics and even clothing. She encourages her weavers to come up with their own designs, and as everything is handmade, each item has its own unique signature.

Products Rugs - Hand woven cotton rugs and carpets are made from a by-product of textile manufacture, which the weavers recycled into rugs using their own design ideas or made by customer specification. The rugs are luxurious with a high quality, a soft textured feel and very durable.

Tableware - Hand woven cotton placemats and table runners are made from a by-product of textile manufacture, which the weavers have recycled into tableware, available in the natural cotton colour only. Table cloths and table napkins are made from hand woven cotton fabric, giving a timeless, classic feel.

Tea Towels - All tea towels are handwoven using 100% pure cotton and is available in natural cotton colour with a red, navy, turquoise or sky blue stripe.

MARAIS, NIENABER VICTORS AT IMPI CHALLENGE The picturesque Lievland Wine Estate, Stellenbosch, was a hub of excitement on 18 - 19 October when just over 5500 eager sports enthusiasts and lovers of the outdoors toed the line to partake in the action of the much anticipated IMPI Challenge.

Multisport athlete Stuart Marais claimed gold in the men’s IMPI Elite Race with an impressive finishing time of 02hours04minutes03seconds, while Chantel Nienaber claimed a long overdue victory in the women’s IMPI Elite Race with a deserving finishing time of 02hours36minutes23seconds. Having been the first male and female IMPI to cross the finish line after successfully completing all obstacles, Stuart Marais and Chantel Nienaber each took home a whopping R10 000.00 prize purse.

In the men’s race Iain Don-Wauchope came in second and Christiaan Greyling finished third. In the women’s race Dominique D’Oliveira came in second, while Tanya Rabie finished third.

According to Marais, the IMPI Elite Race was a lot of fun.

Trail Master Jonkershoek Manser Takes On Untamed Mountain Reserve

There is much more to trail building that removing rocks and dirt. When the fires in 2011 devastated the very limited existing trails in the Jonkershoek Mountain Reserve, a small group of Stellenbosch individuals initiated a project to restore, maintain and extend the trails across these magnificent mountains.

Firstly, they needed funding, as the entrance fee to the reserve is only used towards maintaining the main road infrastructure and not the single tracks. Plus they needed an expert trail builder.

Talking to Bennet Nel from Ace of Spades, with over 20 year’s experience in trail building, the trail builder behind most of Jonkershoek single-track trails, one gets to understand the challenges involved and the passion that drives him.

When planning a new trail, Bennet speaks to the actual users to find out what they are looking for in a route, scouts the whole area on foot, plan around Cape Pine’s harvesting plans within the reserve, and builds in young plantations where trees still have lots of growing to do to maximize the lifespan of the trail.

Bennet also emphasizes that regular maintenance of existing trails is vital for the safety of the users.

Bennet employs 7 men from Kayamandi to assist him in the work, creating much needed job creation opportunities for this community. It sometimes takes up to 4 days just to build 100m of trail in difficult terrain.

Testament to the success of this initiative, Stellenbosch trails were rated as one of the top 10 mountain biking playgrounds in South Africa in Bicycling Magazine and are used for challenging trail events such as the Jonkershoek Mountain Challenge.

Bennet describes the main focus as being the maintenance of existing and will not be possible without funds raised to support the work. To raise further funds for this initiative, Stellenbosch’s BMT Shop team have collaborated with well-known artists, for a second BMT Bike Art Auction taking place on 26 November 2014 at Ride Inn. This coincides with the Origin of Trails mountain biking challenge, with an entry for this world-class event also up for grabs on the night plus, many other fantastic items.

Riaan Manser is celebrated around the world for his adventures. Vasti Geldenhuys joined him on a 6 000km journey by rowing boat from the African continent to New York. Riaan and Vasti have set their sights on a new challenge – doing the 2015 Absa Cape Epic together.

Manser had decided he would “love to do something with Vasti again”, while she had long been wanting to take on the Absa Cape Epic Geldenhuys said the urge to compete in the world’s premier mountain bike stage race had taken root when she and Manser watched the finish in 2012: “We were on the spectator side of the barriers and it just felt wrong.”

Tackling the eight-day stage race became a regular subject as they shared a rowing boat for 133 days: “Riaan and I had a lot of time to talk on the boat and the Absa Cape Epic was one of my favourite topics.” Manser laughs: “Vasti was nagging me about it for 6000km across the ocean.”

Manser rose to international prominence by completing three world firsts: cycling the entire perimeter of the African continent, circumnavigating Madagascar on a single kayak and then paddling around Iceland with partner Dan Skinstad in a double kayak.

The “Take me to New York” journey in a seven metre rowing boat was the first time Geldenhuys, his partner for 14 years, joined him on one of his adventures. By doing so, she became the first woman from Africa to row across any ocean.

They left from Agadir on the Moroccan coast and arrived six months later in New York, also becoming the first people to row from the African continent to North America.

“I realise the Cape Epic is extremely physical,” said Manser. “But through my explorations I know the mental part of it may be much tougher.”

He is an experienced cyclist - his circumnavigation of Africa took place 11 years ago - but Geldenhuys is a relatively new to the sport: “I did my first mountain bike race about three years ago when a friend had an extra entry for a stage race. I hadn’t done any mountain biking before. I was amazed at how tough it was, but since then, I was hooked,” she said.

While not entertaining any racing ambitions, they both want to do as well as possible in the event: “We want to finish and finish well,” said Manser.

“Riaan and I are both very competitive.

We aren’t going for a podium finish, but would love to push ourselves and each other,” said Geldenhuys.

Jacques Kallis Changing Lives with Red Leather Ball

One of the Foundation’s beneficiaries a scholar from Jacques’s Alma Mater, Wynberg Boy’s High, is Bhoteke Mbombi, who is currently pursuing his BSc Honours degree in Biokinetics, having attained a degree from University of Stellenbosch in 2012.

The scholarship from the foundation covers the complete costs of tuition fees, boarding, and cricket for the chosen candidates, amounting to an average of R70 000 year. The funding predominately supports the child playing cricket but should they spark a fascination for rugby, the Foundation will continue to fund it.

What makes the foundation different is the personal involvement and relationship Jacques has with the children, reviewing their reports four times a year and managing their progress to ensure optimum effort is put in to achieving their level best.

Vermeulen has been nominated in the category of Sports Star of the Year where he is up against Ernst van Dyk (wheelchair marathon athlete), Chad le Clos (swimming), Portia Modise (soccer), Khotso Mokoena (track & field) and AB de Villiers (cricket).

The South African Sports Awards have been created to recognise and honour individuals and teams who have excelled both on and off the field between 1 October 2013 and 31 August, 2014. Candidates for the awards are nominated by the National Sports Federations, the sports media and the SA Sports Awards Voting Panel.

Duane Vermeulen is a South African rugby union player, who represents Western Province provincially and the Vodacom Stormers in the Super Rugby Series. Vermeulen ended 2013 as one of five nominees for the SA Rugby Player of the Year Award.
