Waterstone is our biggest Woolworths food market to date and reflects the latest view of our ‘food market of the future concept’ as we continue our journey of becoming a big foods business.” In keeping with Woolworths Good Business Journey, the store also features a number of ‘green’ design elements, such as natural light from skylights and a system that automatically dims the store’s lights in bright daylight conditions. Space project gets lift-off Income generated from building parts for Nano-satellites will assist in financing South Africa’s own satellite, ZA-AeroSat. The Electronic Systems Laboratory (ESL) at Stellenbosch University is busy building 15 control units used in the orientation of satellites. The project is made possible by a recent financial injection. The ESL in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and the Surrey Space Centre in the UK have been working together on the QB50 project, for some time. The recent financial injection will enable the ESL to share its knowledge by building the 15 control units for participants in the project. The QB50 project is an international network of 50 CubeSats (50 Nano-satellites, each measuring about 10cmx10cmx20cm) that will be launched in January 2016 to gather multipoint, in situ measurements of the lower thermosphere, between 200 km and 350 km above the earth. This project is part of the European Space Agency (ESA)’s atmospheric modelling research to improve predictions of what
happens to space objects as they enter the earth’s atmosphere. Weighing only 2 kg, this CubeSat ZAAeroSat is Africa’s only satellite in the QB50 project and is currently being manufactured at the ESL. The ESL has developed the ZA-AeroSat’s on-board computer (CubeComputer) and the orientation control system (CubeSense and CubeControl) locally and has tested it for use in space. The team is very excited about the QB50 project, as this involves groundbreaking work for South Africa’s space exploration efforts.

gastronomic journey at Rust en Vrede the season the wine shows a restrained, fresh, herbaceous tomato leaf character that emphasis the smoky and spicy character of the pure. The third course, the Crown Roasted Kroon Duck served with Butternut, Star Anise, Lentils, Chestnut, and Pancetta indicated a lighter style of wine, to match the texture of the duck, with good structure and sweet aroma profile to compliment the sweet and spicy nature of the dish. The Bouchard Finlayson Pinot Noir 2004 on jeroboam achieved this with a distinct Walker Bay Pinot Noir character of sweet red fruit and spice, while the jeroboam provided excellent complexity from age without losing freshness due to the limited amount of oxygen to wine and low temperature fluctuation due to larger volume. It is early evening as we drive alongside the vineyards toward Rust en Vrede. In ceremonious style we are met outside the Rust en Vrede Restaurant by the host Ronalda. She directs us to a terrace patio table overlooking the rolling lawns and the vineyards in the distance where canapés and sundowners are served. Seated, we are served a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and a canapé consisting of Parmesan cumin straws, Curried Popcorn, Flavoured “Braaibroodtjies” with cheese and Tomato on saffron mayonnaise, and Onion and Fennel Bahji dough, while we are able to enjoy the beauty of nature, the last of the setting sun, and its pink rays cutting through the vineyards in the distance. Cecele, the Maître d’, appears from within the Restaurant through the large double glass doors leading onto the Restaurant patio. She invites us into the luxurious dining room with its open plan showcase kitchen, guides us to our table, and asks, “May I take your jacket, Sir,” to which I gladly responded “Yes”. The chairs are drawn from the table and as we sat down, pushed in. She turns to me and points to the waitress and says, “Your waitress for the evening is Marilize”.
Head Chef - John Shuttleworth
Marilize presents us with some sparkling water, and in a most elegant way she holds a napkin by the side of the glass to prevent any escaping sparkles while pouring. She returns and presents us with the menu which reflects the option of choice, either the Four Course or the Six Course Menu. The four course menu reflects regular dishes with a selection of one of three dishes within each of the four courses, while the six course menu reflects a sequence of finely designed dishes. Each of the six dishes includes a wine pairing option. In royal style, having been seated, the gastronomic journey at Rust en Vrede begins. The Six Course Menu becomes the preferred choice of the evening. The waitress, Kirsten presents us a tray selection of appetizing mini breads consisting of Guinness loaves, mini Sundried Tomato and Olive Focaccia, mini white perfectly round rolls, mini Black Sausage and Thyme, and mini Sage and Onion Brioche. What an unexpected pleasure to be greeted with the presence of pure white goat’s milk butter as spread on these freshly baked mini loaves. Barry Scholfield, the assistant Sommelier introduces himself, and in a very professional manner explains the various pairing to the dishes on the menu. The first course, the Pan Seared Tuna, with marinated Octopus, Seaweed, Pickled Ginger, Teriyaki, and Sesame, is paired with a developed style of Champagne, the 2000 Guy Charbaut Premier Cru Millésime Brut and perfectly complemented the umami rich, salty, maritime, light and elegant quality of the dish. It is a Champagne blended
The fourth course, the Chalmar Beef – Head to Tail a combination of cheek, Rib, Sirloin, Oxtail is served with Parsnip and Coffee Purée, and Baby Marrow. On their main courses the Chef always prepares more rustic red meat dishes and, taking into consideration the delicate nature of John's cooking we source directly from our vinotique. Aged wines lose their harsh tannin structure and in the case of our Rust en Vrede Estate Shiraz 1998, produced by Kevin Arnold, shows great complexity with developed farmyard, meat, leather and red fruit character which perfectly complement the meaty flavours of the dish. The fifth course is the Twice Baked Goat Cheese Soufflé, with quince, and Peanut Brittle. With the goats cheese Soufflé pairing is confronted with the issue of lightness and freshness against musky goats cheese flavours. Deciding against the conventional compliment pairing the dish is contrasted with a light fresh and floral 2012 Viognier by Francois Villard from Condrieu. A very well made, typical condrieu with delicate floral aromas and a slightly waxy texture.
The second course, the Smoked Tomato Tortellini’s with Blue Cheese, Walnut, Pesto, and Tomato Leather, is paired with a Babylonstoren Mouvedre Rose 2013. Harvested slightly earlier in
In the comfort of upholstered chairs, dishes served on crockery handmade by the designer craftsman potter David Walters and wine enjoyed in glasses shaped for different wine varieties with its heavy silver cutlery dressed on fine linen, is the character of this world class restaurant neatly etched. Rust en Vrede Restaurant being regarded as a World Class Restaurant pride themselves on anticipating what the Guests may require before asked; provide a setting in an old Cape Dutch farm-styled building - an atmosphere which blends in, and matches well with elegance the presentation of their flavoursome dishes. Rust en Vrede upholds quality, style, and a smooth service of fine dining with a romantic touch. Last but not the least; the Sommelier applies his genial ability
The sixth course, the Chocolate MilleFeuille, the chef expertly contrasted the bitter salty nature of the chocolate with the fresh fruit character of the passion fruit. It was decided to build on this with a clean, light and fresh style of sweet wine. The Hermanuspietersfontein Nr.2 Sauvignon Blanc Noble Late Harvest from the Sondagskloof ward of Walker Bay was an excellent choice in quality, light and an elegant Noble Late Harvest with exceptional purity of fruit. John Shuttleworth, the Head Chef, attends to the setting of each dish. His gracefully prepared dishes in miniscule portions plated on porcelain slate plates invite guests to engage with each flavour. It is these flavours that bring out an amazing sensation through the combination of elements. John is able to excite the taste buds by the sheer range of ingredients meticulously decorated on the porcelain slate
from two thirds Pinot Noir and one third Chardonnay, and showed a rich palate with developed aromas and an elegant mineral structure.

From Schumacher’s Valley to Schoemanshoek small farms and have over these years governed their farming businesses in producing tobacco, seed, feathers of ostriches, and many more. In 1897 two brothers, Stoffel and Hekkie Spies, sons of Christoffel Fredirik Jacobus Spies of 1833 constructed the first Tobacco Factory in the Schoemanshoek Valley which was completed in June 1901. In 1908 they also registered the Spies Mild Tobacco Bag where after they packed their tobacco in these bags and sold it on the South African market.
Hidden in a lush valley with its small farms and homesteads, when traveling north from Oudtshoorn on the R328 to the Swartberge, is the little village of Schoemanshoek.
Over the years farming has taken on new dimensions with the likes of a Winery and an olive producing farm in the Schoemanshoek Valley.
In 2003 Johann Landman purchased Portion 19 of the Farm Roodewal nr. 47 from Kobus Spies, grandson of Hendrik Stephanus Spies. He kept the original name Vogelsang, and established a vineyard and a Wine Cellar – the Karusa Premier Winery and Craft Brewery.
It is recorded in the archives that Heinrich Schumacher, born in 1700 in Bosau, Holstein Germany, employed as a sailor of the VOIC, arrived from Sleeswijk-Holstein on the ship Meijenberg at the Cape of Good Hope on 21 October 1724. After his arrival at de Caap de Goede Hoop he changed his birth names and was henceforth known as Hendrik Schoeman. Ten years later on the 1st October 1734 he married Martha Olivier. They had three sons and one daughter. The first son named Johannes Hendrik Schoeman, born on 6th October 1738 was later in life allotted the land area known as De Rust in a leasehold agreement. The second son named Jurgen Schoeman, baptized on 6th August 1740 was later in life allocated the land area Roodewal under a similar leasehold agreement. It is the Roodewal area which became known as the Schumacher’s Valley, and only toward 1895 or shortly thereafter that it was renamed Schoemanshoek. Johannes Ulrich Spies, born in Amburg, Bavaria, Germany in 1730 was the first Spies to arrive at the Cape of Good Hope in 1747 employed as a Soldier by the VOIC. He married Anna Johanna Beukes on 6th April 1755. His eldest son Johannes Jacobus Spies, born on the 24th March 1755, is the father of Johannes Hermanus Spies born 14th November 1792. He and his family of 11 children lived in "de Cango" at Rust and Vrede and became the first in the Spies-family to set foot in Cango Valley. Johannes Hermanus Spies of 1792 is the father of Christoffel Fredirik Jacobus Spies, born on the 3rd March 1833. Christoffel Fredirik Jacobus Spies became the first in the Spies-family to set foot in Schumacher’s Valley when he married Regina Catharina Schoeman on the 7th April 1856. As wedding gift she inherited Potion 20 and 22 of the farm Roodewal nr. 47 from her brother, Hendrik Stephanus Schoeman.
He replanted the fruit trees and secured a Fresh Fruit producing Export Farm. Jacques Conradie, the winemaker of Karusa was selected the Winemaker of the Month. Karusa also offers tourists the opportunity of enjoying their Wines, their Belgium Styled Beer, and Tapas at their Restaurant. Bella Mea Olives & Pottery Seven years ago the Serfonteins sold their business and smallholding in Pretoria. Chris, an attorney, and Mariaan, a radiographer left their field of expertise and bungee jumped into olive farming and pottery on a small farm, a portion of Roodewal nr. 47 which they purchased in Schoemanshoek. The undeniably beauty, and the attractive surroundings with its green pastures even during the hottest, driest summer is what makes them function optimally. They purchased an Italian Olive press, trained themselves on bought-in olives, and today harvest their own olives and produce high quality olive oil. Even before they had completed the construction of their new house, Mariaan‘s pottery was functional.
Oue Werf Country House & Manor Today, 158 years later this gift evolved into the establishment of the Oue Werf Country House and Manor, a family run business. It not only lends itself to a Four Star Guest House, but also extends its services to its own Orchard Fine Food Deli and Coffee shop, and Evening Markets – an experience not to be missed. The Evening Market takes place on the last Friday of each month from September to the end of March. Take a weekend break and enjoy the luxurious accommodation and traditional countryside hospitality this winter. Call Tharina at (044) 272 8712. Chris is no longer intimidated by an olive harvest, neither is Mariaan hesitant about her own pottery ideas. In fact doing things their way, without fear, favour or influence is probably the backbone of their venture. Both the Olive Oil and Pottery are on sale at their studio in Schoemanshoek. WINEMAKER OF THE MONTH FROM THE “LAND OF THIRST” Karusa, the Khoi-San word for “Dry Land” or ”Land of Thirst”, is situated in the farming settlement of Schoemanshoek Valley, 13Km from Oudtshoorn en-route to the Cango Caves. Karusa is a 350ha well developed farm with an area of 35ha consisting of stonefruit and 8ha of wine grapes. The rest of the farm is mountain and veld, while the vegetation is the typical Karoo fynbos with succulent Karoo-aloe and spekbos with many more indigenous plants, not excluding the presence of wildlife. Johann Landman took ownership of the farm Vogelsang in 2003 and renamed it Karusa. The family business is run by his son Theo Landman (Estate Manager), daughter, Saretha Conradie (Financial Manager), and Son-in-law, Jaques Conradie, (Winemaker, Brewer Master, and vineyard consultant). The past 11 years has seen the development of Karusa into becoming a premium producer of export fruit and quality wines. The farm has become a tourist destination, with its Tapas Restaurant, and Wine tasting. And to the connoisseur beer drinker it is home brewed Beer in fine Belgium Style. Since taking occupation of the farm over 95% of all the initial orchards planted before the take-over in 2003 have been replaced by high density planting techniques. Most of the "old" cultivar fruit were also replaced with new exciting and modern cultivars, especially plum and apricot cultivars. Karusa is one of the first farms in SA to ever start picking apricots in November. The largest percentage of all fruit harvested is freshly packed and exported to UK supermarkets and some selected outlets throughout South Africa.
Winemaker Jacques Conradie Jacques, matriculated at Oudtshoorn High School in 1996 where after he completed his diploma in Cellar Technology in 1999 at Elsenburg and took office at Mooiuitsig Wines in Bonnievale. After a 2 year stint he was appointed winemaker at Graham Beck Wines in Robertson under mentorship of Cellar Master and MCC guru, Pieter Ferreira. He was also greatly influenced by Gary Baumgarten the GB Manager and Charles Hopkins the Graham Beck Franschhoek Cellar Master. It is to these 3 men that he owes his passion, knowledge and skill, which also became the reason, “Why Karusa”. When Jacques was given the opportunity to make 1 x 300 litre barrel of his own wine at Graham Beck in 2004 he realized that was the start he needed. The wine, being a co-fermented Syrah/Viognier received a 4 star rating in the 2005 Platter Guide which he and his wife bottled by hand. The 380 bottles was scooped up by Belgium importer Stefaan de Vriendt - with whom they do business till this day.
Microbrewery Karusa has a very primitive and basic microbrewery system. During May through September they brew, ensuring optimal productivity in the winery. In the summer months they receive lots of European visitors to the tasting and Tapas facility.

New Deli Café opens in Stellenbosch Three individual dreams, three individuals, and one new business - Vernuft Deli Café at the Woodmill in Stellenbosch.
Ferns from Stellenbosch 360 was the guest speaker. The 45 guest were treated with Canapé’s as well as a cheese tasting and wine.
It all started way back in 1998 when Hester began the production of her own high quality yoghurt and cheese with milk from her own dairy. Her ingenuity became the cornerstone for the production of Hijke, her own brand of cheese and yoghurt. The yoghurt, high in protein, low in GI, with no added preservatives, neither any stabilizers nor sugar, is the basis of her success.
During a visit to the new Vernuft Deli Café The Newspaper was pleasantly surprised at the quality of their well prepared and neatly plated light lunch.
Today, two additional dreams have become a reality. Her daughter Eleonor, a wine maker by trade, and daughter in law Kari, a former teacher, both brought their skills to Vernuft. Kari runs the Deli with Hester, while Eleonor, who previously worked at Spier as wine maker for almost 8 years, is now making her own wine that will be sold at Vernuft Deli Café in the near future. On 10th April Vernuft Deli Café officially opened their doors to the public. Johann Rademan from Radio Sonder Grense was the MC and Annemarie

Karen Pretorius, enthuisiastic head Baker says the bakery follows sustainable practices, grow their own wheat, rye and barley, stone grind the flour, and bake it in a wood-fired oven that runs on invasive alien wood species – thus protecting the indigenous renosterveld on the farm. Farmer Angus, the winner of the Best Free Range/Organic Producer award has won this award previously, but the judges felt strongly that he continues to raise the bar in free-range practices.

ART & DESIGN
Holden Manz Art Collection Nestled in the heart of the winelands Holden Manz Wine Estate not only offers award-winning wine, a 5 star guesthouse and restaurant, but also boasts an impressive array of art by local South African artists for purchase. The gallery was founded in 2006 in Cape Town, but was later moved to Franschhoek when owners, Gerard Holden and Migo Manz bought the wine farm. The art, which is carefully chosen by Migo Manz, cannot only be viewed at the gallery in the picturesque town of Franschhoek, but throughout Holden Manz wine estate too. Migo Manz explains why he decided to bring the artistic flair to the estate, “I have always had a love of art from a young age and specifically a deep appreciation of contemporary
South Africa artists, so when Gerard and I acquired the wine farm, I saw the possibility for a synergy between the two.
Extending the artistic theme to the actual wine, the wine labels for every Holden Manz range is also carefully thought of and personally designed by Manz and incorporates his love of abstract paintings.
The artists and art we represent is purely based on our personal choices of whatever South African contemporary art inspires us. It is an educated choice, but always decided by the heart, not the head.”
“Each wine label reflects the essence of the wine and the estate,” says Manz, “My belief is that artists do their work, then let go of it, and the one experiencing it might see and feel something completely different to the artist which is just as true and valid and one of the main reasons that I love art as it influences and speaks to everyone differently.” The gallery currently represents the following uniquely signed artists: Karin Miller, Trevor Potter, Luhanri Bekker, Marie Stander, Donna McKellar, Carl von Bach, Dedre Fouquet, Jayne Cully, and Marinda du Toit.
Although much of the artwork is on display at the gallery, guests to Holden Manz wine estate can enjoy displays of art throughout the farm, with artwork adorning the walls of the restaurant, Franschhoek Kitchen, as well as the guesthouse. Each room in the guesthouse features one of the unique artists signed to the gallery and is available to purchase by visitors.

British Airways officially opened its new £1.1 million (R19.8 million) lounge at Cape Town International Airport, the first in South Africa to be modelled on its Galleries Lounges in Terminal 5. Twice the size of the previous facility and able to comfortably accommodate 148 customers, the Cape Town lounge opened a month before the airline increases its winter schedule to the Mother City from seven to 10 weekly services. The Galleries lounge concept was first introduced at Terminal 5 and contributed to it being named the world’s best airport terminal. It has since become the de facto benchmark for British Airways’ lounges at key destinations around the world, of which Cape Town is one. The original Galleries lounges took the best of British design, style and art from past and present to create a series of carefully curated rooms within larger, flowing spaces. The same idea has been applied at Cape Town International, expect here it integrates both British and South African design. To achieve this, the British Airways’ team worked with local design agency, Tonic, Striking and innovative interior surfaces created by the London-based Giles Miller Studio and fabrics from Osbourne and Little, the renowned UK fabric and wallpaper designer, combine with locally manufactured furniture and art by upcoming South African artists. Gary Cotterell says: “How exciting for artists to be part of this corporate col-
lection in a space shared with travellers about embark on journeys of their own. " As well as creating elegant, peaceful spaces the designers also had to account for the varying needs of customers. Two large bathrooms each boast a luxury shower, ample washbasin and toilet, while allowing enough room to get changed and accommodate a carryon suitcase. In keeping with Galleries standards, a range of complimentary Elemis products are provided. A spacious quiet area, separated from the rest of the lounge, provides large, comfortable seats for customers to relax or read before boarding. There is complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the lounge as well as two desktop positions in the business area. A new feature is an ‘air’ printer which enables customers to print from anywhere in the lounge. Food and beverage is central to the lounge experience and British Airways chefs have worked with local suppliers to create a new lounge menu. Customers come First at Torga Optical It was Magdél Gouws’ dream to be a part of a Franchise where the need of the consumer comes first. As a newly qualified optometrist she was hired by the Torga Optical Mokopane (Potgietersrus) branch in 2010 and when Torga Optical opened their new store in (Polokwane) Pietersburg she was appointed as manager and Optometrist. From a young age she desired to open her own business. She moved to Bredasdorp in 2013, and after a year a Torga Optical Franchise in Somerset West became available, she immediately took up the offer. Her dream came true as the Torga Optical store opened on 24 April in the newly constructed Helderberg Centre in Somerset West, adjacent to Somerset Mall. Gary Willman, a Mechanical Engineer from Manchester, England, helped Magdél to make her dream come true. “I was sold on the Torga Optical Group instantly,” Gary said. Gary is a silent partner and has a business orientated mind. Since qualifying as an Engineer he has moved to South-Africa and started a number of successful ventures. Torga Optical’s main focus is customer service. “People have become too familiar with poor services as part of their lives,” Magdél and Gary says. As a service orientated business, Torga Optical would like to impress people by
showing them that good service does exist. They go through a process with the client, do the examination and then provide the correct product that suits the need of the client. They go the extra mile. The quality and pricing of their products are more than competitive and real value for money. Torga Optical design and manufacture their own frames and lenses, eliminating the middle man and cutting costs to benefit its clients. The company imports all their basic lenses from Germany and make Freeform High Definition lenses on demand in their Laboratory in Maitland, Cape Town. Torga Optical offers free visual screening which gives a basic understanding of what could be wrong with the patient’s eyes, even before the patient goes for a full eye examination. They also supply visual certificates free of charge for those who require drivers licence certificates, eliminating standing in long queues at Traffic departments. Other licences include JCB, forklift, pilot, and skipper licences. To the customer Torga Optical offers a 12 month guarantee on their lenses and frames, and a 30 day exchange guarantee should the client not be satisfied with his/her lenses. Go Green with Gumtree South Africans to consider greener modes of transport. Between January 2013 and November 2013, the number of hybrid cars advertised on the online classified site increased by a remarkable 721%, indicating that in a relatively short period, consumers’ automotive vehicle preferences shifted dramatically. The majority of the ads for these eco-friendly vehicles were listed in the Western Cape.
Earth Day took place globally on 22 April and raised awareness about environmental protection and sustainable living. On this day, citizens of the world were encouraged to consider living greener lifestyles – something that can be done simply by using eco-friendly products and adopting more sustainable behaviour. Doing so not only yields significant environmental benefits, but also has the potential to cut down on expenses. Gumtree, home to thousands of ads for environmentally-friendly products and services offers its users plenty of ways to improve their green credentials and save some cash in the process. Gumtree offers a category devoted to carpool and rideshares. Sharing transport not only reduces carbon emissions, but also saves on fuel costs, ensuring commuters have extra rands in their pockets at month-end. Petrol prices are currently at record highs – a motivating factor behind carpools and rideshares, but the steady price increase has also prompted many

However, sustainable ways of living are not just limited to the road. In fact, Gumtree offers a multitude of other products that consumers can use to up their eco-ratings. For instance, over 1 000 ads for solar panels and geysers were listed throughout and although they are popular year-round, ads for these appliances saw a surge in popularity in January, possibly as a result of sunlight hours being at their highest and the heightened opportunity to maximise this power.

Skills shortage tackled by Labori High School
In an effort to alleviate the skills shortage in the building industry and engineering fields, Labori High School, the only school in Paarl and one of very few in the country to offer the full technical as well as academic portfolio, is working together with the private sector to prepare learners for the world of work. A course in construction and building science is currently being offered after hours to learners who are interested in a career in construction industry or engineering. The course is offered free of charge by Abré Marais Architects. The learners’ first project is the design and construction of a tuck-shop at the school. Building material has been made possible by the generous spon-
sorship from local businesses and the interest from the industry in assisting the learners has been overwhelming. Head master of Labori High School, Johan Batt, said this initiative aims to offer learners practical skills beyond the class room to make them more competitive in the job market or even prepare them as entrepreneurs. He adds that there are opportunities for other businesses to participate in additional courses aiming to develop students in the technical trade. “Our classrooms are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and machinery and offers and ideal platform for businesses to offer additional courses in the electrical, civil and mechanical fields

Teachers and learners had been invited to receive their rewards for their hard work and ingenuity in carrying out their Eco-Schools projects like, recycling swop-shops, vegetable gardens, environmentally-focused curricular work water walks and fundraisers.
A teacher and learner from Macassar High School received their Winning prize for the International Category – where schools have run ongoing projects for five years. The Macassar learner had starred in a movie on water pollution made by Macassar High School. The school was commended by Waste to Wealth for their excellence in partnering with initiatives like the President’s Award and 90 by 2030 – a carbon reduction campaign. It was well into autumn and still dark when we arrived at the pick-up point where we followed our tour guide, Rudolph and his assistant Anke to De Zeekoe Gat Conservation area to observe Meerkat activities. Awaiting sunrise over the Klein Karoo we were treated to an early morning coffee, before setting off to experience the Meerkats. Everyone took a chair and a blanket to experience an adventure of a lifetime. En route to the meerkat’s burrow, Rudolph told us more about the territory, and informed us that they return every afternoon before sunset to establish the correct burrow location for the next morning’s expedition. As clouds were delaying the sun’s rays, the meerkats remained underground for almost 50 minutes from the time of our arrival. While we waited for the first meerkat to make its appearance Rudolph explained in detail how Dewey Ginister started the De Zeekoegat Meerkat Conservation Project five years ago. In the beginning he observed the Meerkat family by standing 300 metres away from them, talking to them and coming closer every time. After 6 months the meerkats realized that he was no danger to them. Meerkats don’t like movement and immediately feel endangered if there is a sudden movement. We were instructed to sit still while waiting for them to come up from the burrow. Sandy, the oldest meerkat suddenly made the first appearance. He stood in a sentry (upright) position for a few moments, scanned the territory, and

then started digging up soil to warm up his body. One after the other they surfaced from different holes leading from their burrow. Not before long six of these meerkats were sitting close together, gathering heat from one another to warm up. Some meerkats started digging, while others ran around. We counted 10 meerkats in this family.
Some of them have the cutest names like Liefie, Moaner, Sandy and Uno. It was interesting to see that one of the meerkats in the family is always positioned as a security guard to watch out for danger. All of a sudden, after almost 90 minutes of entertainment the show was over. They took the road in a direction away from where we were being entertained. We were told that it is their daily routine of foraging and frolicking. We followed them for some time by foot, and then headed back. Lots of photos were taken of these small creatures while information in general was shared by the guide.

More facts on Meerkats Meerkats are members of the shy family which include the bat-eared fox, the aardvark, porcupine, and aardwolf. The name “Meerkat” is derived from the Latin name “Suricat”. The normal meerkat family consists of 10-17 meerkats. They sleep at night in their 3 meter deep burrow, and only come out during daytime. In midsummer the meerkats come out of the burrow at about 5 o’clock. In bad weather they hide away. If they come out and there is no sun, they warm up by digging. Their life expectancy is 12 years, and they start producing siblings from the age of 2. They identify each other by the
mother’s smell while the oldest meerkat is in control. The females stay in the family of their birth, while the males travel to find a female and start his own family. The meerkat lives in the semi dessert area. They are not designed to drink water, but eat lots of succulents that give them enough moisture. The meerkats have excellent eye sight, and can see any intruder long before they can be seen. Meerkats are not beggars of food. They hunt slow moving food and don’t share their food. They eat fast - grab and go.
They feed on insects, larva of insects, termites, worms, spiders and scorpions. While digging they also scan the area for possible danger. The Meerkat does not trust others and moves rapidly if in danger. Meerkats mate for life. The mating season is from May to July. The first babies are born after a gestation period of 75 days and weigh between 600 and 800 grams. First sight of babies is almost 3-4 weeks after birth, and all females share duties apart from mating by helping with feeding as they all have milk.
During the mating season 18 babies will see the light; however only between 40-50% will survive. Every baby meerkat goes to school. For almost 4 months they learn all the different calls. The babies shadow the mentor, learn new skills and find out what plants they could eat for moisture. A baby graduates at the age of 5 months where after he needs to do things for himself. Their enemies are the Jackal, and African wild cats. Nothing can get close to them as they are very observant. They do not make good pets and it is not possible to discipline them.

strength and perseverance. However, I never thought that being on the 7th continent surrounded by ice capped mountains, glaciers, icebergs, snow, penguins, whales and other wildlife will be so emotionally overwhelming,” says Wagner.

Hein Wagner, blind adventurer and motivational speaker, has successfully completed the extreme Antarctic Marathon on the South Pole. On March, 9th 2014 Wagner completed what has been colloquially described as the harshest marathon on the planet. Nick Kruiskamp, well-respected athlete and race champion, was Wagner’s guide. This is the first time in the history of the 15-year-old event that a blind person has finished the gruelling race. “I always knew the Antarctica Marathon would be a test of endurance, mental
As expected, the treacherous race covered the most rugged terrain, made of mud, ice and sludge. Wagner refuses to stand back from a challenge. Despite his blindness, Wagner has a string of accomplishments to his name. He is an avid sportsman and enjoys abseiling, running and cycling; he has won the World Cup Cricket for the Blind, sailed the Cape-to-Rio yacht race, completed the gruelling Ironman triathlon and finished the legendary eight-day stage Absa Cape Epic mountain biking race. Wagner is also the current holder of the land speed record for a blind driver at 322.52 km/h. Wagner participated in the event to promote the abilities of those living with disabilities and to raise the profile of Vision Trust, an organisation dedicated to making the world more accessible to the blind. He reached his goal to raise enough money to provide 20 previously disadvantaged, unsighted individuals

with specialised computers and software to help them lead a normal live. Wagner’s describes the most difficult thing he has had to do, was to accept his blindness unconditionally. He describes how his sense of feeling was challenged in Antarctica: “I can only remember a few occasions in my life when I really yearned to see. Waking up to whales playing in the water, seals sun-bathing on floating icebergs and
the backdrop made up of pristine, beautiful and breath-taking glaciers left me a little envious of the sighted. It wasn’t easy, but then I started looking at it from a different perspective. I believe this was my true test of endurance and to my surprise the pristine beauty of the 7th continent is so extreme it turned out that I could actually hear the view.”

Cape Town Marathon sets its sights on World Majors
Host to a legendary cycle tour and a world-famous ultra-marathon, Cape Town is now seeking to raise her sporting profile as the grand city course for that pinnacle of all long-distance races, the classic Olympic 42.2km marathon. Invigorated by a new partnership between the City of Cape Town, Western Province Athletics (WPA) and ASEM Running, the 2014 Cape Town Marathon will be the first year of a focused, long-term development plan which is endorsed by two of South Africa’s sporting greats, Francois Pienaar and Elana Meyer.
series offering a $ 1 million prize purse split between top male and female marathon runners in the world. This collaboration of the organisers of these five historic city races aims to contribute to advancing the sport, globally raising the profiles of the athletes and encouraging running enthusiasts to take an increasing and on-going interest in elite racing. Last year, the Tokyo Marathon was accepted as the sixth race in World Marathon Majors.
“Cape Town Marathon has a vision of becoming one of the rare World Marathon Majors,” comments former Springbok Rugby Captain, Francois Pienaar, now Chairman of ASEM Running. “We believe that the Mother City is the ideal host for an Iconic African City Marathon.”
What all the World Marathon Majors have in common is that each race offers both participants and spectators an unforgettable experience of their city, whether it’s the elite athletes striving to break world records or the weekend jogger with her heart set on finishing her first marathon, the race unites people in cheering on and celebrating the ultimate in human endeavour and achievement.

win medals at Cape Classic
The Maties Swimming Club has a history of excellence, producing multiple Olympians, an Olympic medal, Multiple Paralympic Medals, Commonwealth Games medals, national record holders, and national champions. Swimmers face various challenges to achieve their goals, with the core stumbling blocks being access to appropriate facilities, high performance support services and experiences critical to growth. This year, Maties has chosen to partner with the Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch (AWSS) in a Fund raising Golf Day initiative by donating a percentage of the proceeds of the Auction on the day to the AWSS. The aim of this Golf Day, which is to be held on Friday, May 9th at the Stellenbosch Golf Club is to establish a fund aimed at providing support and incentives to swimmers at every level who meet specific time-based criteria in the form of: performance incentives that reward hard work with the opportunity to improve and achieve even more; access to speciality high performance services and assistance and access to national and international competitions.
The IFBB Western Province bodybuilding and fitness federation kicked of the year with the SSN Cape Classic supported by Scientific Sports Nutrician (SNN) as the main sponsor. The event took place at the CPUT Bellville campus earlier in April with a record of 134 athletes entering the competition. According to the IFBB Western Province president, Kevin Schwartz, about 350 spectators attended the pre-judging and well over 700 the main show. The SSN Cape Classic competition is known as a stepping stone for newcomers to the sport with men’s novice u-75kg and over 75kg divisions and new beach and fitness novice divisions. The Western Cape is flourishing with new talent - evident seeing the tremendous talent on stage. The expierence of chief judge Mary Pulito and fellow judges Deon Munnik, Eddy Holloway, Rob Mellows and Sakkie Changuion shown through as the placings were spot on. The novice ladies beach bikini division saw 20 athletes in a tough competitive line-up. Newcomers to the sport, representing our area, Inka van Rhyn, from Paarl and Lindy Kannemeyer from Somerset West respectively earned first and third place in this division.

Inka, a student at CPUT in Wellington made a decision about two years ago to change her lifestyle. Not only for herself, but to show others how to train, work hard and achieve results. Her competitive background, passion and determination paid off when she was selected the winner of the novice ladies beach bikini division. Theresa Schoeman from Gordon’s Bay, winner of Beach Bikini division over 35 entered the SSN Cape Classic 2014, because of her interest in gym, sports and nutrition. For her it was all about gaining experience, meeting new athletes, and to enjoy the day which she worked so hard for. She followed a healthy diet plan

Theresa also attended the SSN Cape Classic Seminar to prepare her for the competition. Her next goal is to compete in Battle of the Titians II scheduled for 21 June at CPUT Bellville campus. Theresa’s message to the over 35’s: “This is your time to work towards achieving your fitness goal, don't wait, you can do it and you will never look back.” The ever growing men's athletic physique line-ups saw some very impressive first timers. Robert Smith secured a well deserved win in the men's athletic physique up to 178cm division, while Francois Marais took the honours in the men's athletic physique over 178cm line-up. Other outstanding performances included Shuddley Toffar winner of the novice over 75kg division and Elouise Kellerman who won the overall ladies fitness bikini title. Kevin Schwartz president of IFBB Western Province is taking the sport to new heights. The prize money for division and overall winners for the Battle of the Titans II in June have increased substantially which resulted in a greater interest among new competitors from all over South Africa and abroad.
