According to a report by Chris Whitfield Absa Cape Epic riders helped press some grapes for the Meerendal Wine Estate and those of the 1200 starters who make it to the finish will be presented with a bottle of wine made from those same grapes.

Thousands of the pinotage grapes were packed into large reinforced plastic bags and laid across a 10 metre section of the course - as the riders emerged from the part of the ride that took them through the Meerendal Manor House they rode across them.

The wine will be labelled as “Bigfeet - pressed by bikes” and cellar master Liza Goodwin said there would be a few bottles left over after the Epic that would be sold.

The idea, she said, was the brainchild of Meerendal owner Herman Coertze.

And in case anybody might suggest he was getting the riders to do his work, Coertze was among the riders taking on the eight days of the Cape Epic.

The eleventh edition of the Absa Cape Epic kicked off on 23 March with a 23-kilometer prologue at Meerendal Wine Estate in the Durbanville Wine Valley. The event saw 1 200 excited riders from 50 countries enjoy cool weather with the first group of riders starting their 8-day journey at 06:45.

Shoprite Checkers recently opened its 1000th supermarket in the group and continues to expand all over the county.

A number of energy efficient elements were incorporated in the design of the store. The supermarket utilises more energy efficient lighting throughout the store and makes use of heat pumps instead of geysers. All interior and exterior illuminated signage use LED lighting and the signs and parking lot lights are

activated by light sensors. Various engineering concepts have been employed to minimise sound pollution and the roof insulation has been improved to reduce heat radiation.

These elements will be included in all future stores developed by the Group to achieve environmental sustainability.

Removal of Adverse Credit Information

Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies announced that South Africans with paid-up default judgments against their names at credit bureaus are set to have their adverse records cleared in the next few months.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has published regulations for the removal of Adverse Credit Information, which as of 1 April 2014 indicates that all adverse information of a consumer who has paid up their debt is removed from credit bureaus. The Minister stated that they have two months thereafter to clear up their systems.

Those with paid-up judgements would not have to approach a court and go through various other processes before the information was removed from their credit profiles.

Among the critics have been the Banking Association of SA and Moody's ratings agency, which said it could create a bigger risk of borrowers defaulting because it would reduce the amount of information available to banks.

on his way to New York An ‘obstinate (but not foolish) refusal to give up’ is the attitude that got a Maties computer student into the final round of the largest and most competitive mainframe computing competition in the world.

Rijnard van Tonder, an MSc student at the MIH Media Lab and the Computer Science division of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Stellenbosch University, is one of 43 contestants from around the world to go head-to-head in the IBM Master the Mainframe World Championship to be finalised from 5 to 9 April in New York. This is after they out competed nearly 20 000 other contestants from around the world.

According to an IBM media release, the championship is designed to assemble the best university students from around the globe, who have demonstrated superior technical skills through participation in the regional contests.

The final round began on March 10 and students competed head-to-head in “creative problem-solving for online workloads, server applications and systems programming on the mainframe”.

Davies acknowledged fears that this would heighten the risk and cost of credit, but said the government was intent on pushing ahead with the measure, which will result in the debt rehabilitation of 1.6 million blacklisted consumers.

The new regulation will result in the immediate and ongoing rehabilitation of blacklisted consumers who have paid their debt, but are still prevented by credit bureau listings from getting loans, housing and sometimes jobs.

National Credit Regulator (NCR) chairperson Trevor Bailey said the object would not be to write off existing debt or to enable people to take on more credit if they could not afford it. Rather, it was to give some of those blacklisted in the past a clean slate so that they could have access to housing and jobs. This would stimulate economic growth.

On 5 April the finalists will travel to New York City to showcase their application to a panel of judges. The winners will be announced at the IBM Mainframe 50 Anniversary event on April 8.

Rijnard says he decided to enter the preliminary round, which ran from 5 February to 3 March, because of his interest in solving problems in the context of computer systems. The competition also required no prior experience in mainframes and the prizes (from custom-made T-shirts to Google Nexus 10 tablets) looked good, he adds.

as the challenges were time-consuming and required perseverance: “Perseverance is a state that I would describe as ‘I'm completely stuck, I'm pressed for time, I've tried everything, I'm tired, and I've had enough!’ followed shortly thereafter by ‘It's time to try harder.’”

He has stern advice for students missing out on these kinds of opportunities because of limited programming skills: “I think students in South Africa exaggerate the fact that programming is too challenging. At first it is intimidating, but like any other skill it develops over time; and programming requires a large initial investment of time. All around the world the skill is being adopted at a growing pace, and it is becoming increasingly accessible to a variety of disciplines”.

For Rijnard it is a privilege to be part of this challenge, and he is especially looking forward to staying in the internationally-renowned Waldorf Astoria on Park Avenue in Manhattan, New York.

Later this year, he is heading off to Carnegie Mellon University, where he has been accepted to do doctoral research in the topic that he is actually most interested in, computer security.

The MIH Media Lab at Stellenbosch University was founded with the purpose to promote research in ‘new media’ technology in South Africa. In close partnership with MIH, the internet division of Naspers, the MIH Media Lab aims to participate in research on next-generation technologies that will influence the ways in which humans interact with computers, the Web and other forms of electronic media.

The final group of students, who could not move into their new accommodation at Stellenbosch University (SU) earlier this year due to construction work, moved in at the end of February.

The additional accommodation comprises 769 beds that were added, therefore US accommodates nearly 6 800 of its approximately 28 000 students in University accommodation right at the centres of its campuses.

SU is currently completing a new senior residence, Listen, Live and Learn units (LLL Houses) and making additions to the Huis Marais, Huis Visser and Irene residences. These students live together for a year according to a central

together in a network.

New meeting place for Africa’s Travel industry

It is important that immunizations, preventative medications, and general precautions should be considered before travelling to different parts of the world.

The launch of ‘Africa Travel Week’ by Reed Travel Exhibitions (RTE) will take place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) from 28 April to 3 May 2014.

Travel vaccines are used to prevent illness and disease while travelling. They can range from typhoid fever, yellow fever, malaria and many more. The various vaccinations are administered at least 4 - 12 weeks before travelling to ensure enough time to develop an immune response before exposure to an illness or disease.

Africa Travel Week will target Africa’s inbound and outbound markets under RTE’s established portfolio brands of World Travel Market Africa (WTM), Incentives, Business Travel & Meetings (IBTM Africa) and the International Luxury Travel Market (ILTM Africa).

Vaccinations will vary from person to person, depending on the following: the country you will be visiting, the season, your age, health condition, length of your visit, and if you are staying in a rural or urban area.

Although few immunizations are compulsory for international travel, some are recommended for the traveller’s protection. Many countries require you to have a certificate confirming the various vaccinations.

Which vaccines you should get before you travel Vaccines that are necessary for travel are divided into three categories: routine, recommended and required vaccinations.

Routine Vaccinations - Ensure that you are up to date on your routine vaccinations. These vaccines are necessary for protection from diseases that are still common in many parts of the world like: Tetanus, Polio, Measles, Mumps and Rubella, Diphtheria and Influenza (Flu).

Recommended Vaccinations Recommended vaccines are travel vaccinations that can protect you in areas where there is a high risk for contracting certain illnesses or infectious diseases. They also help prevent the spread of diseases from one country to another.

Required Vaccinations The only vaccine required by International Health Regulations is the yellow fever vaccination for travel to certain parts of Africa and South America.

Most important vaccinations for Travellers Here is a list of vaccines that are recommended for international travellers as well as the areas reflecting a high risk for contracting certain illnesses or infectious diseases.

Hepatitis A - An infection of the liver caused by the hepatitis A virus. This

viral infection spreads through contaminated food, water, shellfish, or person to person contact where poor hygiene is common. Areas most common: Africa, India, North and South America, South East Asia & Eastern Europe.

Hepatitis B - An infection of the liver caused by the hepatitis B virus. This virus is transferred from one person to another through infected body fluid, such as blood contact, infected medical equipment and sexual transmission.

Areas most common: Africa, China, Southeast Asia and India.

PROPOSED GORDON’S BAY OUTLOOK POST Another lifestyle and popular regional, national and global tourist attraction is on the cards for the Helderberg Basin.

Piet Maré recently concluded a study on the possibility and feasibility of a Tourist Outlook Post on the slopes of the Hottentots Holland Mountains slightly above and to the west of Gordon’s Bay Harbour overlooking False Bay. The proposed tourist attraction, is in line with some of the most exiting tourism sites Cape Town has to offer.

The site is easily accessible from the R44 and the N2 with an entry point at Steenbras dam above Gordon’s Bay. People of all ages including the disabled would be able to enjoy the facility. The hospitality and tourist industry in particular, can most definitely benefit from this attraction.

From this point most of False Bay is visible. It includes the whole of the Helderberg, the areas of Sir Lowry’s Pass, Gordon’s Bay, Strand and Somerset West. In the distance Macassar, Khayelitsha, Mitchell’s Plain, Muizenberg, Fishhoek, and Simon’s Town also loom on the horizon with Table Mountain as backdrop, and Cape Point to the west.

The entire project is eco-friendly.

No excavations will be required as the terrain is flat which is ideal for

viewing purposes. It is envisaged that the Outlook Post will consist of a free standing wooden cabin structure, with a wooden deck. On the deck three powerful telescopes will enhance quality close up viewing of the broad spectrum of the spectacular scenery.

It may also be noted that emphasis will be on nature conservation, history, tourist information and events in the Helderberg and bigger False Bay area.

The Outlook Post will be complimented by a kiosk which will provide light snacks, cool drinks local art paintings/handcraft and memorabilia e.g.

T-Shirts, caps, coffee mugs, carry bags, key holders etc. for visitors to the Outlook Post.

Piet Maré’s research has been well received and is supported by the Provincial Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism (Alan Winde) the Ward Councilor of Gordon’s Bay (Johan Middleton), Gordon’s Bay Business Forum, the Rotary Club of Gordon’s Bay and numerous guest houses in the Helderberg.

He states that nowhere in the False Bay/Helderberg area there is a more suitable point to appreciate the surroundings and the beauty nature has to offer, not to mention the spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

ITB is the world’s largest tourism convention and was the perfect platform for the global launch of the region’s wine tourism marketing campaign, Stellenbosch Experience.

The aim of this dynamic campaign is to reaffirm Stellenbosch as the wine tourism capital of South Africa and the ideal hub from where to explore Cape Town and the Western Cape, and from 5 till 9 March, representatives from the granddaddy of South African Wine Routes met with top trade and media to showcase the area’s diverse and unparalleled wine tourism offerings.

The Stellenbosch team engaged face to face with close to 400 members of the travel trade and media during the threeday event in Berlin. A highlight of the global launch activities at ITB was collaborating with TripAdvisor for their ITB networking event held at the popular Soho House in East Berlin. The event was by invitation only and attended by 300 of the top international trade and

industry representatives.

The latest global tourism travel results and trends, which were released at ITB confirm a rosier outlook for tourism in 2014. The good news for South Africa is that Europe, still the country’s biggest source market, is expected to show solid growth in 2014 on the back of a two-year period of economic depression.

“This is good news for tourism growth in Stellenbosch, but it means we have to respond with innovative, enticing travel offers to a world that is spoilt for choice, easily influenced and still under economic pressure. We believe the Stellenbosch Experience campaign is well timed to attract more visitors to our region,” said Annareth Bolton, CEO of the Stellenbosch Wine Routes.

Other Stellenbosch Experience campaign elements planned for the rest of the year, include an innovative wine tourism blogger campaign with top international and national travel, lifestyle and food bloggers that kicks off at the end of April, just before the campaign is showcased at Indaba from 10-12 May 2014.

Food Routes has now also introduced an invaluable ‘Food Forensic Tool’ called Culinary Sensibility Identities (CSI) on its website. This serves as a nifty online evaluation process in which the traveller can compare and match his own unique culinary personality profile to that of a compatible destination.

Wine Maker of the Month the village he named Stellenbosch.

Van der Stel then settled Dutch farmers on farms alongside the Eerste River where Pieter de Vos in 1696 became the first Dutch Settler to be awarded ownership of the farm he named Vergenoegd, meaning “satisfaction has been achieved”.

The Faure’s came to the Cape of Good Hope with the French Huguenots, and in 1820 took ownership of Vergenoegd where they have been making wine ever since. The farm Zandvliet was also owned by a member of the Faure Family, and is today known as Macassar.

John Faure, the Cellar Master at Vergenoegd is the 6th Generation Faure making wine on the Vergenoegd Wine Estate.

The original farm was 600 hectare. It has since been reduced to 300 ha with the Cape Town Studios being located on land which was part of the original farm.

History claims that Van der Stel crossed the sandy wastelands from Cape Town in the direction of Vergenoegd and at the first river, which he named the Eerste River he met some Strandlopers. He then followed the river up-stream to where he proclaimed

Presently John is farming 70ha of vines, and produces about 500 tons of grapes, with the entire harvest worked through the cellar. Large volume of wine is sold off and only the best is retained by John and bottled under the Vergenoegd Label.

Famous Runner Duck Parade A childhood passion of ducks controlling snails in the vineyards has turned not only into a non-invasive farming practice, but also, into an environment friendly working force. These Indian Runner Ducks under the watchful eye of their “Duck Master” march off daily into the vineyards to forage for snails and insects thereby limiting the use of pesticides. There are between 800 - 1000 Runner Ducks “contracted” to work the vineyards. Tourists from all walks of life come to view the Runner Duck Parade,

and even indulge in a breathtaking lunch experience at the Restaurant.

Producing Good Quality Wine The factor that helps John the most in producing excellent wines is that the soils are poor which enhances concentration in the vines, with a lot of wind off the False Bay coast that not only cools the grape, and curbs the vigour of the vines. Vines at Vergenoegd are not as vigorous as further into Stellenbosch area.

Coupled with the poor soils and the wind reducing growth the vines produce small berries with thick skins. In red wine production it is all about the skins.

The flavour and the colour are all in the skins.

For the past 45 years Vergenoegd has been bottling their wine under their own label. It was consistent from year to year as they only bottle the best. Consistency has been very even over the years and in a poor year they were able to produce at least 2 tanks.

Vergenoegd produces only red wines, and sells quite a lot of bulk wine. Only 15% of its best wine is bottled annually.

Grapes for the production of the Runner Duck White Wine are the only cultivar that is not grown on the farm. These grapes are either bought in or swopped with red grapes. Runner Duck White Wine is produced in the Vergenoegd Cellars.

The Label

A Cellar Master Handpicked In his own words John said, “I have a lot of respect for the history and believe that wines are made in the vineyards.

Growing up on a family farm with generations of knowledge passed down, you start with such an advantage over a winemaker that would come here and then try and make the best wine he can make. You are not going to get it right in one or two years. We are blessed with the handed down knowledge which is a huge factor.”

John obtained his diploma at Elsenburg and graduated in 1983. He respected his father’s success and knowledge and did not start immediately implementing everything that he had learned. Over the years they started experimenting and blending modern techniques with tried and tested traditional practices.

If they see it’s a cool year, they might pick a little later and give a longer skin contact than in a warmer year. 1989 was the first odd year that broke the trend of even years being better than the odd years. The climate is no longer as relevant as winemaking has adapted to get the best out of each vintage.

Vergenoegd, by being a family farm, has ensured that during the last 20 years there was only one winemaker at Vergenoegd, and over the last 50 years only 2 winemakers. This helps in consistency and heritage.

Vergenoegd produces two ranges of wines. The first is the Classic Range with its Vergenoegd traditional label, bottled as the Vergenoegd Estate Blend, the Vergenoegd Cabernet Sauvignon, the Vergenoegd Shiraz, the Vergenoegd Merlot, the Vergenoegd Terrace Bay, and the Vergenoegd Old Cape Colony Vintage Port.

The second is the Runner Duck Range, labelled the Runner Duck Red, the Runner Duck White, and Runner Duck Rose.

The Runner Duck Red is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Cabernet franc and Malbech. The white is a Sauvignon Blanc, a more tropical easy drinking wine. The Rose is made from their red grapes – a more full body Rose. When the red grapes are ripe, they are harvested, left on the skins for a day, and only thereafter is one third of the juice drained off and kept separate.

The best expression of Vergenoegd is the flagship Bordeaux styled Estate Blend, a combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and, Cabernet frank. The Terrace Bay blend is “Vergenoegd in a bottle”, if you don’t know Vergenoegd Wines the Terrace Bay will give you an idea what the rest of the range is like.

Traditionally winemaking was made according to a recipe but now they evaluate each season and adapt the “recipe”. These traditional winemaking techniques were characterised by the odd/even year phenomena, when following these standard recipes, evident during the vintages of the 70’s and 80’s.

Awards During the 60’s Vergenoegd planted Cabernet Sauvignon, which was relatively unheard of in the Cape at that stage. In the early 70’s they received the General Jan Smuts Trophy for the best wine on show with Cabernet Sauvignon and went on to win the trophy 4 years in a row. This set them on the road to bottling wine under their own name.

Today their focus is more on the bottled wine shows where members of the public can buy the wine. Vergenoegd sells one third of its wines from the farm, a second third to the local trade, and the last third to the International market. Even though their wines are well received in Europe, their biggest export market currently is China.

New home for IS Art Gallery IS Art Gallery moved into the charming ‘old world’ space next to Le Quartier Français four years ago to establish Franschhoek centre’s first truly contemporary South African Art gallery.

Celebrating 23 years of free service Drakenstein Palliative Hospice (DPH) are celebrating 23 years of free service to the broader Drakenstein, from Saron to Simondium municipal community this year.

Led by a professional team of committed staff and volunteers, the organisation provides care to patients, families & vulnerable community members infected and affected by a life-threatening illness or life-limiting conditions. Their service delivery includes palliative home based treatment, care, support and programmes focusing on health, wellness and optimal ‘living’ in the community, for the community, with the community.

A year later they established the sculpture garden, behind the gallery, in the herb garden of the world renowned restaurant of Chef Margot Janse, The Tasting Room. Over the years the gallery has had such success that it has now grown out of its home at Le Quartier Français and is moving across the road to 11 Huguenot Street (corner of Berg Street).

Cape Wine Auction marquee at Delaire Graff Estate in Stellenbosch

The inaugural 2014 AfrAsia Bank Cape Wine Auction, which took place on Saturday 15th March, witnessed the remarkable realisation of a bold dream when an astounding R7.045 million was raised for education in the Cape Winelands.

In a grand marquee on the majestic Delaire Graff Estate in Stellenbosch, 250 prominent local and international wine aficionados as well as online bidders were invited to make a serious difference when 40 once-in-a-lifetime Auction lots came under the enthusiastic hammer of auctioneers Iain Banner and Paul Myson.

The astonishing line-up of lots included rare wine collections as well as exclusive hand-selected local and international wine, gourmet and travel experiences.

Highlights of the day included an art cameo by talented artist John Adams whose live 8-minute surprise portrait of Nelson Mandela fetched a staggering R460 000 on the Auction. Other lots fetching phenomenally high prices were: The Mulderbosch & Fable Mountain Vineyards American Dream Lot: R700 000; The Glenelly Estate Lot: R450 000 and The DeMorgenzon & Royal Portfolio Lot: R400 000.

The Auction beneficiaries, the Pebbles Project, the MAD Charity and the Click Foundation, together with The Cape Wine Auction Trustees Michael Jordaan, Ken Kinsey-Quick, Wendy Appelbaum, Siobhan Thompson and Michael Ratcliffe, will now have the resources to take the first steps towards changing people’s lives through the powerful tool of education.

FIRST HI-TECH SOLAR PLANT OFFICIALLY OPENED IN STELLENBOSCH South Africa’s and Africa’s first hi-tech solar plant was officially opened in Stellenbosch’s technology hub, Technopark, with a ribbon-cutting and plaque-unveiling ceremony by the Minister of Science and Technology, Derek Hanekom, 28 February 2014.

The plant will serve as a demonstration facility for the production and marketing of a thin-film solar module that provides an effective way to convert solar energy into electricity.

The opening by the Minister follows the inauguration of the plant’s equipment earlier the month by joint venture partners Photovoltaic Technology Intellectual Property (PTiP), a local technology development and intellectual

holding company, and Singulus Technologies, a listed German engineering company.

PTiP, a spin-off company of the University of Johannesburg (UJ), is the first company in

Finally the moment that all 2013 FNB Wines2Whales (W2W) Mountain Bike (MTB) riders have been waiting for, is the opening of the spectacular Amphi Bike Park at Paul Cluver to the public.

“A key FNB W2W MTB passion is to create and maintain MTB Trails that are scenic, safe and adventurous,” says Johan Kriegler, FNB W2W MTB Director.

“Recently the Cluver family of the Paul Cluver Wine Estate has partnered with us, to build one of the most exciting MTB trail projects in South Africa, the Paul Cluver and FNB W2W MTB Bike Park, situated in the Amphitheatre at Paul Cluver. Dr Cluver always had a passion for wood work and creative ideas. He co-opted Anton Potgieter, who is well known for his eco-bridges in South Africa, to oversee the construction of the Pedal Power Association (PPA) swing, Raka, Slangpark, the resurrection of Pofadder and Witklippieskloof”.

The unique bridges at Paul Cluver Wine Estate have been elected as one

of the design projects for the international World Design Capital Cape Town 2014. Adding to its uniqueness is the alien wood (blue gum, black wattle and black wood) that was used in construction of these magnificent bridges. The alien trees in the amphitheatre were replaced by indigenous trees.

The bike park has three sections, the 7km MTB Loop, 1km technical play park and 30km(Red) and 35km (Black). All three sections start and finish at the same spot, within the Amphitheatre.

In 2013 the Mercedes-Benz Boland Market Centre, consisting of Paarl Motors and Eikestad Motors held their first Annual Mercedes Trophy Golf Day. On the 10th April 2014 they will host the second Annual Mercedes Trophy Golf Day at Pearl Valley Golf Estate, Franschhoek.

South Africa hosts 22 days of Amateur Golfing Tournaments in total around the country and the winners from each Golf Day will be flown to Mauritius for the national finals, all expenses paid.

The Mercedes Trophy is the largest Amateur Golf Tournament in the world.

These Amateur Golf Tournaments are played in over 40 countries in the world, and each country will send their best players to compete.

Two Oceans Marathon in wheelchair for charity On 19 April 2014, Jeremy Hazell will attempt to become the first person to complete the 56km Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon (OMTOM) in his regular wheelchair, fitted only with a third accessory wheel for improved steering and maneuverability.

In taking on this challenge, Jeremy hope to raise funds for The Rachel Swart Fund and Senecio, two Non-profit Organisations. Senecio is an organisation which provides support for people with disabilities from underprivileged communities in the Helderberg region.

“These are charities close to my heart, because they provide support to people whose circumstances present them with challenges that go far beyond those of

their disabilities,” says Jeremy.

The Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon will present him with the greatest athletic challenge he has undertaken since being paralysed in an accident on Table Mountain 16 years ago.

After 13 years of inactivity and declining health Jeremy was inspired by an article Tim Noakes wrote on the famous low-carb high-fat diet and decided to revitalise his health and start exercising seriously, losing 30 kg.

In 2012 and 2013 Jeremy completed the OMTOM Half Marathon of 21 km and the Peninsula Marathon of 42km in a time of 4h41m. On 16 February 2014 he completed the Peninsula Marathon

under five hours to qualify his entry for the Two Oceans. During events, Jeremy uses a clip-on third wheel called a Free Wheel, but does not use a racing wheelchair.

The Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, draws sporting enthusiasts from across the globe to the scenic Cape Peninsula for a unique athletic experience. This year 11 000 runners will take part in the Ultra marathon (56km) while 16 000 runners will compete in the half marathon.

The full marathon kicks off on Main Road, Newlands and continues through Muizenberg, Fish Hoek, over the breathtaking Chapman’s Peak Drive, through Hout Bay, over Constantia Nek before ending at the UCT Rondebosch campus.
