Escaping to nature is a wonderful way to reset, and there’s certainly no better way to spend your day, weekend or holiday, enjoying a safari getaway in the Western Cape.
The Winter months of June to October offer the best game viewing when the herds of game graze during the day, whilst watering holes and riverbeds are the main attraction at sunset.
There are numerous game reserves in the Western Cape that offer the perfect backdrop for a wildlife encounter, all easily accessible and in malaria-free regions – some can be reached by car in a couple of hours.
Other activities during a safari can include game drives, birdwatching, guided walks, boating and many more.
If you are a safari newbie, welcome to this magical world - it is an enticing, relaxing, exhilarating and sometimes an overwhelming experience. All your senses will be awakened by the sights, sounds and experiences you will have when going on a safari.
The Big 5 game reserves in the Western Cape where you can view lions, leopards, elephants, rhinoceros and buffalo are: Gondwana Game Reserve, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, Garden Route Game Lodge, Inverdoorn Game Reserve, and Aquila Game Reserve.

| You can’t put a price on someone’s life A man asked him if he could help, and he had a very short time to make a huge decision – was he going to try and save the woman, or was he going to watch her drown? Having played competitive water polo for both Paul Roos Gymnasium and Maties in his hometown of Stellenbosch, Brandon is an experienced swimmer with knowledge of water rescue. “I realised that I was probably her best chance,” he said. It did, however, cross his mind that the waters of the Thames are quite treacherous and that a man had drowned in the same spot a few weeks before after attempting a similar rescue.
GET IN TOUCH 021 852 6500
Nevertheless, Brandon decided to jump. Unfortunately, the place where he entered the water was quite shallow, and he hit submerged rocks not even two meters below the surface, breaking his foot in multiple places, tearing his meniscus as well as his PCL ligament in his knee and suffering severe bone contusions and lacerations on his feet. Still, he swam to where the woman had last been seen.

In June 2022, Stellenbosch University (SU) alumnus Brandon Visser quietly commemorated the day a year ago when he jumped into the River Thames near London Bridge to save a drowning woman. For this selfless act, he was recently awarded a bronze medal by the Royal Humane Society, a British charity that grants awards for acts of bravery in the saving of human life. Brandon, who had been preparing for a marathon at the time, was 16 km into a 30 km training run when he saw a crowd on the bridge staring at a woman in the water. “I had never run that route before, so it seemed like fate, like maybe I was meant to be there,” he recalls.
“People were pointing to me where she had gone under, and I managed to find her and pull her up. I was so relieved that she was still alive. She was very stressed and shaken and immediately started to struggle. I was expecting that, but it made it very hard.” He managed to swim to the shore, and they were both taken to hospital. Brandon spent 4-5 months on crutches and has been focusing on recovery and rehabilitation ever since. He hopes to be able to complete a half-marathon on the anniversary of the rescue. Putting your own life at risk to save others He described the awards ceremony as an exceptional event. “It was a real honour to be there and receive this award from Princess Alexandra. There were some amazing stories of people being selfless and putting their lives at risk to save others. So, I felt it was a great thing to be a part of.” He is often asked whether he would do the same thing again. “My answer is definitely yes. You can’t put a price on someone’s life.” Brandon obtained his BCom (Statistics) degree from SU in 2012 and moved to London in 2019 where he works in financial technology in the data and analytics space.

| Stormers triumph puts smile back on Capetonian faces The DHL Stormers coach, John Dobson, believes the DHL Stormers have put smiles back on the faces of the people of Cape Town with their victory over the Vodacom Bulls in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship Grand Final, claiming an 18-13 victory at the DHL Stadium. Victory earned Dobson’s men the inaugural URC crown and ended the Stormers’ long wait for glory, having not won a Super Rugby title during their time in that competition and endured a challenging period off the field in recent times. “It’s absolutely surreal,” said Dobson. “We had a mission statement at the start to get Cape Town smiling for many reasons - whether that’s because of the pandemic because rugby had lost its lustre in the Western Cape. We were always on the front pages for the wrong reason. People were disconnected from the team, both through Covid reasons, and we weren’t doing well off the field or on the field.” Victory of success is halfway there, if you set goals and achieve them “It’s not often in life that you start off with an audacious goal, and you actually achieve it, so it’s completely surreal. Going around that stadium afterwards, the people weren’t saying ‘well done’, they were saying ‘thank you’. That’s so powerful for us. We should be thanking them, but it just shows what this team means. To re-establish that connection is absolutely surreal.” On what was behind the team’s triumph, Dobson added: “If I were to put it down to one thing, it’s an unwavering work ethic and joy among our players. This guy, Steven Kitshoff, epitomises it. He takes notes in meetings, puts everything into training, never complains. It’s an excellent group, and we got them to believe in what we were trying to do,” John concluded. The Stormers ended the campaign with a run of 11 straight victories, with 10 of them at home. Dobson is of the opinion that the Grand Final – a fantastic spectacle with an atmosphere to match – will go even further in making the Stormers feel at home at the DHL Stadium following their switch from DHL Newlands last year.
| Groot Constantia celebrates its 337th birthday Groot Constantia’s world-famous wine continues to shine as it claims the spot with one of three wines in South Africa which have achieved more than seven top 100 positions annually, with Grand Constance leading the charge with 11 wins over a period of 12 years. Until now, Grand Constance undeniably remains the grand dame of sweet wines. Hundreds of years ago, the wine produced at Groot Constantia began to receive international acclaim for its superior quality, and emperors and kings - such as Frederick the Great of Prussia, Napoleon and Louis Philippe, King of the French - were all known to be great lovers of Groot Constancia wines (translated Grand Constance into the French) which also means “consistency”. As a provincial heritage site and a living museum, Groot Constantia has always been one of Cape Town’s most important destinations and is a member of the Cape Town Big 6 tourist attractions. Groot Constantia has been welcoming visitors to the Estate for more than 300 years and has a long track record as a must-visit location in the Cape. In fact, 160 years ago, JP Cloete (the then owner of Groot Constantia), produced one of the earliest known tourist attraction adverts in South Africa, marketing Groot Constantia and giving detailed directions to the Estate – making it the first-ever wine route map in SA. On 13 July, Cape Town’s iconic Groot Constantia Estate celebrates its 337th birthday, cementing its status as the oldest wine-producing farm in South Africa. Adding to the Estate’s reputation of consistent quality is its much-lauded flagship wine, Grand Constance, which recently received the National Wine Challenge Special Award for Wine Consistency and the Grand Cru ‘Best in Class’ Award.
For the modern-day visitor – be it wine lovers, fun-seeking families, tourists, social explorers, or anyone looking for a memorable and unique location in the Cape - Groot Constantia offers a wonderful day out, immersed in a rich sense of history and wine culture, accompanied by gorgeous views and outdoor spaces, exceptional wines, delicious food and fun for the whole family.

THE NEWSPAPER
| Relocation of Wheel to view Robben Island and beyond
The much loved and iconic Cape Wheel at the V&A Waterfront is moving from its current location in front of the Victoria Wharf Shopping Center to a new location offering unparalleled views to Robben Island and beyond, as well as views of passing ships movement to and from the Waterfront and the commercial port while retaining views of the city bowl and Table Mountain. The wheel, which came into operation in 2008 will undergo maintenance and be reassembled at the new site, close to the Waterfront’s boardwalk with additional new activities like Skilled Games and Food & Beverage where it will open in time for the start of the Cape Town summer in November. The new site, with near access to Breakwater Park, also provides a more open and relaxed public space for visitors to the wheel. Work is also underway where the wheel currently stands to revamp this area into a landing plaza for public transport into the Waterfront.
Adding to the list of reasons to visit the V&A Waterfront is the news of a SterKinekor movie theatre arrival. Ster-Kinekor has triumphantly fought off the cynic’s notions that it wouldn’t make it through lockdown. “Earlier this year, a positive attendance trend showed that cinema lovers are far from extinct, and now we have a new place to get our movie fix.” The V&A addition to the Ster-Kinekor menu is bursting with movie magic, including a first of its kind for the Western Cape in the form of a Kids’ Cinema. The Kid’s Cinema is filled with all the vibrancy, colour and comfort (in the form of bean bag seats) that little movie-lovers need, and also boasts a playground inside its theatre. For more refined movie lovers, Cine Prestige and Cinema Nouveau are also ready to be visited, alongside 2D and 3D theatres. Word on the street is that IMAX will come to town later this year, as well as D-BOX, which earmarks a motionfueled cinema experience, as the V&A explains.

| Restoration of Civic Centre's Mandela and Tutu murals
The contractors removed the old decals from the windows of the Civic Centre’s Tower Block recently to make way for fresh versions of the much-beloved murals of Archbishop Desmond Tutu and President Nelson Mandela. These iconic artworks invite us to enact the values of these two great South Africans while going about our daily lives by building and maintaining a free, fair, prosperous, and non-racial city and country. “I hope the murals will inspire Capetonians to commit and re-commit ourselves to these values.” The restored twelve-floor-high window murals will see the two figures - both of whom are recipients of Cape Town’s highest civic honour, the Freedom of the City - once again greet motorists as they make their way into the city. The project will take roughly one month, weather permitting, to complete. The City will retain the existing artwork of the murals, rather than having it redesigned. “This will allow us both to preserve the iconic imagery and minimise the cost of the project.” The conceptual design of the images was undertaken by Dreamfuel Media, who specified that the clothing of the subjects in the artwork should contain various imagery of special significance to Cape Town and South Africa. The image of Madiba was based on a photograph by Matthew Willman and the image of Archbishop Tutu draws on a photograph by Andrew Zuckerman. Madiba’s shirt contains images representing some of the city’s most iconic features, including the Bo Kaap, penguins at Boulders Beach, Table Mountain, a minstrel at the Kaapse Klopse, and the King Protea. Archbishop Tutu’s shirt contains imagery invoking the anti-apartheid struggle as well as the core political values of non-racialism, freedom, togetherness, and peace. The concept designers selected Cape Flats-born artist Linsey Levendall to illustrate the concept.

Kanu | Angelina Gold
A unique Cap Classique with a ‘touch of gold’ There may not be a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but Kanu Wines on the outskirts of Stellenbosch has made it possible for everyone to enjoy “gold in a glass” with the introduction of their premium Angelina Gold Cap Classique. What makes this bubbly unique and exceptional is the fact that it contains 24 carats of edible gold flakes, the first for a sparkling wine in South Africa. “This Cap Classique also pays homage to the 50th anniversary of this exceptional wine style in South Africa,” says Johan Grimbeek, winemaker and cellar master at Kanu. The pinot noir grapes for this sparkling wine were sourced from the best Stellenbosch vineyard blocks and the fruit was bunch-pressed, then cold-fermented with neutral yeast before the juice spent six months on the fine lees. The wine spent 12 months in the bottle after the second fermentation before disgorgement. “The Angelina Gold Cap Classique is rich salmon in colour and gold-flecked with a very pale rim,” Johan explains. “It is fresh, refreshing and crisp, and displays red berry fruit, crunchy red apple and delicate candyfloss flavours. It enters the palate on a dry note with persistent red fruit, malted barley and wild strawberries, and has an extended finish with a toasty undertone.” This is not Johan’s first foray into sparkling wine production. He’s been making Cap Classique since 2012, but “this is the first time a bubbly gets the gold treatment”! “Extensive research and development has been undertaken regarding the insertion of gold flakes into wine,” he says. “These flakes are completely edible and harmless.” Another feature that puts this Cap Classique in a different league is a light-emitting diode (LED) unit in the bottle’s punt, which lights up the gold flakes when switched on. The Kanu Angelina Gold Cap Classique, which also comes in eye-catching packaging, sells for R1 200 per bottle, and is initially available from the estate or online.
The Mythical | The name Kanu is from a legend told by an old Xhosa man who was raised in his grandmother’s house on the Goedgeloof farm. Day after day, he would tell of the mythical bird he had seen flying over the farm. According to him, if the bird’s shadow touches your crop, you are promised a bountiful year’s harvest!

And, with the Kanu name comes the Kanu Promise: that each wine made by Kanu, no matter the price point, is made in such a way that it will always deliver on quality and flavour.

Irene Mynhardt | A creative Mind of Inspirational Art “The art of painting is in my blood,” says Irene Mynhardt. As child, Irene was seldom without her sketchbook and pencil - always busy creating new ideas. Irene grew up in a small town with little opportunities to develop her talent. She followed different professions in marketing and teaching, yet, being a creative person, none of these professions really satisfied her inner desire to create. The burning desire to paint became ‘louder and louder’ over the years, and she decided to give up teaching and follow the urge within her soul to create. “In 2015 I set myself up in my studio, and started painting, and from that moment for the first time in my life, my soul came alive, and I felt closer than ever to my Creator,” Irene says. As an artist, every time she takes on a commission to create a painting, she centres on the uniqueness of its creation. She focuses on the layout and the presentation of the object to be captured on a canvas. She observes the finer detail in the object by meticulously applying it to bring amazing products through her artistic skills to life. “I started to see God’s hand in everything. Amazed at how He created everything in detail, even from the smallest leave of a tree to the biggest mountain, everything becomes alive before my artistic eye. I have been painting full time since then and haven’t stopped,” says Irene. A wide selection of products are available from Irene Inspirational Art, all bearing witness of her artistic skills. These imprinted articles include: bedding, carpets, table cloths, place mats, bags, and many more can be viewed on the website.

MannaBrew - Mesquite Espresso T h e s u p e r f o o d “ c o f f e e ” t h a t ’s c h a n g i n g the lives of everyone involved MannaBrew is not another coffee brand trying to convince you that our coffee is the best, because it is NOT COFFEE. MannaBrew is, in fact, made from a superfood known as Mesquite seedpods, roasted in a similar way as coffee. You can still get to enjoy a cup of rich, smooth, delicious dark liquid – but it is unlike anything that you have ever tasted before. To summarise - It looks like coffee, can be made the same ways as coffee, enjoyed the same way coffee would be, but it is a superfood that tastes super good! BACKGROUND The story of MannaBrew starts in South Africa, deep in the heart of the Karoo in a small town called Prieska. It is here, on the banks of the mighty Orange River, where farmlands are being taken over by thousands of invasive thorn trees, known as Mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa) trees. While most local people regard these trees as a nuisance, one family has discovered that the deep-yellow seed pods that grow on these trees are in-fact an amazing superfood. But what does one do with an abundance of a superfood in the middle of nowhere? Through 26 years of working with the Mesquite trees, the two brothers, Aam and Brandt Coetzee discovered you can actually make coffee with the Mesquite seedpods. Well, each year, a small window of only 2 to 3 weeks allows us to harvest a year’s supply of the Mesquite seedpods before the summer rains start to fall. But this small harvesting window brings a smile to the faces of the locals in this poverty-stricken Karoo town. For these people, it is an opportunity to go into the field and collect the pods, which are then purchased from them according to the weight they have collected.
This helps to provide them with seasonal work and supports their local economy. The pods are sorted by hand to ensure they are of the highest quality, before being weighed, put into bags, and transported to Somerset West, in the Western Cape province of South Africa. When the pods arrive at the MannaBrew processing plant, they are sorted once more, before being roasted, milled, and blended into the perfect ground consistency so that it can be brewed using almost any type of coffee-making instrument. The blended Mesquite Espresso is packed in specially made bags to secure a long shelf life. The packaging is 100% bio-degradable and recyclable. Now, it is ready to be enjoyed! The slow roasting process brings out the natural sweetness and unique flavors of this superfood from nature. MannaBrew contains no caffeine, but the essential sugars from the Mesquite beans are known to energise and uplift, like caffeinated coffee, but without the negative side effects. Once you have tasted MannaBrew, everything else might taste a bit bland in comparison.
THIS IS NOT JUST ANOTHER CONSUMER PRODUCT – THIS IS A PRODUCT THAT CHANGES LIVES The lives of the people who drink it, by offering them an alternative hot drink that still gives them the full coffee experience, whilst being a superfood that is soft on the digestive system, does not cause acidity in the body, but rather energises and uplift without keeping you awake at night. The lives of the local workers who collect the seedpods, by providing them with a source of income in a poverty-stricken area, so they too can provide for their families. This, in turn, gives a massive boost to the local economy in the area where the seedpods are collected. The lives of the farmers on whose farms these trees grow, who have more time, energy, and resources to produce food when the much-needed water and land is not being used by the rapidly spreading Mesquite trees? THE NUMBERS TELL ANOTHER STORY Stopping the Spread - Each 226g box of MannaBrew contains an average of 75 Mesquite seed pods, which adds up to about 1125 seeds. Research indicates that an average of 35% of these seeds germinates within the first year. This means that each box of MannaBrew has the potential to prevent another 393 new trees from invading valuable farmland over the next year, and the number grows exponentially from there as each tree produces more seed! Saving Water - The water usage of the average size Mesquite tree (2,5 to 3,5 m high) is about 60L/day, which means that with each box of MannaBrew you help to save an average of 8 million litre/year of precious underground water per year. Creating Jobs - Currently, about one thousand people are involved each year during the harvesting process. Every bit helps, as the unemployment rate in the Northern Cape where the Mesquite seedpods are harvested is currently at 40%! With every sip of MannaBrew, you not only get a healthy energy boost, you also help to conserve the ecology of the Northern Cape while making a difference in the lives of thousands of harvesters. Busting open the Piñata Life is like taking swings at a piñata (A piñata is a container hung up at parties to be beaten with sticks until sweets or presents fall out.) It’s also an excellent metaphor. There’s no external evidence that we’re making progress - that’s why people often quit before getting to the part of their lives where the sweets come out. Story: At the birthday party of a 5-year-old there was a piñata, and one by one, the kids put on a blindfold. They stepped up, were given a bat, spun around, and then told to swing at the piñata. The first couple of kids were disoriented and didn’t know which direction to swing. With the help from the rest of the children, no apparent damage was done to the piñata – or so it seemed! Those kids got a little frustrated, but they didn’t realize that the piñata was slowly breaking down. Many of them made solid contact and did some damage, whether they knew is or not. The compounding effect of pounding on the piñata was making a difference. Every time a blow landed, those kids made invisible progress, growing ever closer to the goal of busting it wide open, but still, the piñata would not break. When all the children had their swings, the mom blindfolded the birthday boy, and he stepped up for his turn. You know what happened next. More than a dozen children scurried to gobble up all the treats that had fallen from the piñata.
Was it that one shot that busted the piñata open? Absolutely not. It was the compounded accumulation of all those hits that contributed to achieving the goal of getting the sweets. Life Lesson: Too many people quit their business, their workouts, or their relationships before the sweets comes out! Although they’re making progress, it doesn’t always show up externally. Just like the children, they are making invisible progress in their life. Unfortunately, most people don’t stick around long enough to realize the outcomes from that progress. When you bust open a piñata, you get an undeniable rush. In fact, the harder it is to bust open, the more intense the rush is. As you keep swinging, anticipation builds. Adrenaline kicks in. Confidence grows – all because you didn’t give up. Take your swings. As many as you need. Get those sweets. Many piñatas are waiting for you to bust open and enjoy. From the book, ‘The Power of One More’ by Ed Mylett
Pioneer School for Visually Impaired learners
Overcoming Adversity
Michael Bredenkamp, Pioneer School Principal, said the purpose of this exciting new addition to the school was to educate and empower blind and visually impaired learners to become broadcasters and thus create employment.
On 9 June 2022, T4 Education in partnership with Templeton World Charity Foundation, Accenture and American Express, announced their Top 10 shortlists for the World’s Best School Prize.
The learners share stories and news, do interviews, and report on all activities in and around the school. They are also trained in proper microphone etiquette, operating the various aspects of a studio, producing, sound engineering, compiling and presenting specialised programmes, scriptwriting and compilation of radio ads, etc.
The Western Cape Government is delighted to announce that not one, but two schools, have been nominated in the Top Ten shortlist for the category: Overcoming Adversity. Pinelands North Primary School and West End Primary School have been nominated and will now compete with 8 other schools in their category from Australia, Malaysia, India, Uganda, Brazil, Jamaica, Kenya and Nigeria, for the $50 000 prize for their category.
The radio station is broadcasting live from the school, every Wednesday night from 19:00 until 20:00. It is an internet-based station so listeners from all over the world can tune in.
They will also have the opportunity to showcase, on a global platform, their best practices and innovative approaches on how to overcome adversity.
Started Radio Station
Quinten Pendle, a music teacher at the school and the driving force behind the radio project, said employment opportunities for visually impaired people are fewer than for their sighted peers. “As a blind person, I have had to compete with other “normal” or “sighted” people to get a job, and to provide for my family.”
WC Schools on shortlist
“Under the leadership of Principals Ann Morton and Clive Arries, Pinelands North Primary and West End Primary, respectively, have stood out for overcoming adversity – by giving each learner the opportunity to succeed in a caring and nurturing school environment. They achieved this by working together with many dedicated teachers, SGB members, administrators and other employees, as well as the broader community.”
The learners started off with preparation and training at the beginning of 2021. Their very first broadcast took place on Thursday, 9 September 2021. Until now, the school made use of some of Pendle’s spare equipment, which includes a computer, mixing desk and microphones, to stay on air, but in February, this year, they received a generous donation from “Dankie Lottoland” with which they can now buy all the necessary studio equipment and software. One of the rooms in the music building is being made soundproof and ready for use as a dedicated broadcasting studio. At present, nine learners are part of the Radio Academy. Apart from music, the learners cover all topics regarding the school. “Our broadcasters are keen interviewers, and not only do they bring the most amazing stories, but they also have great ideas, some of which we have already implemented into our schedule.” “Our radio station serves as a method of entertainment for both students and staff, a platform for communicating information, and as a marketing tool for our school,” Pendle concludes. “Of course, the learners of these schools have also played an important role in representing their schools. These efforts are empowering our young people and set an example of excellence within our education system. Going forward, T4 will open up voting to the public and I strongly encourage residents to take part in it – to truly showcase the amazing work being done right here in our province.” The schools will now compete for the Top 3 positions and then the ultimate prize.

Everyone needs a spa day (or two) While pampering spa days have traditionally been deemed an extravagant, once-in-a-blue-moon expense, Rioma Cominelli (Founder of La Vita Spa and Director of First Loyalty Plus) says that many men are also starting to recognize the proven benefits that spas deliver and are frequenting them more and more to reap the rewards.
“Given the frenzied pace of our modern world, coupled with the stresses and strains that constitute our daily lives, we owe it to ourselves to take a break now and then, and simply switch off,” she says. “Whilst there are many ways to relax, a spa day not only relaxes but pampers you as well.” Here are 5 great reasons to go right ahead and book that much-needed spa day:
“Spa treatments date back to ancient times and were recognized then already for their healing and rejuvenation qualities.”
Improves your mental health and relieves stress: Nobody returns from a spa day feeling stressed and grumpy! A spa day is, by its very nature, designed to improve your mood, calm your mind, release stress, and reduce aches and pains while boosting your feelings of happiness and wellbeing through the release of a flood of happy hormones (serotonin and dopamine). Rids your body of toxins: When you’re stressed, you’re more likely to retain water and suffer from low-energy levels, and in the process of relaxing, your body is more easily able to rid itself of harmful toxins. This in turn strengthens your immune system, helping your body to fight off illness and infections. Increases blood flow and circulation: Massages stimulate blood flow and boost circulation, thereby aiding the lymphatic system to rid the body of excess fluids that may have built up. Relieves pain: If you suffer from regular headaches or muscular aches and pains, a massage will assist in getting rid of painful “knots” to reduce and manage these symptoms. Enhances your sleep quality: A lack of sleep causes a myriad of issues, including depression and anxiety. A spa day is a sure way to ensure you will be ready physically and mentally for a good night’s rest, which, in turn, helps your body to regenerate itself. Rioma concludes, “There’s something to be said for simply taking a day off to relax and rejuvenate, go ahead and treat yourself - your body deserves it - and you’ll end up feeling like a new person.”
Architect’s designs make international headlines SAOTA is an architectural firm based in South Africa. It was established in 1987, but at the time, it was known as Stefan’s Antoni Architects. Stefan’s Antoni graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1985. When he first opened his office, he had a small team working with him. Today, SAOTA is a formidable team that is led by Stefan’s Antoni and has grown immensely. Their architectural designs have impressed hundreds of clients in more than 86 countries and 143 cities across six continents. SAOTA has become an international sensation in architecture, which is no mean feat for a company that first set shop in Africa. It has taken hard work, talent, and a unique vision to deliver diverse architectural projects to different markets worldwide. The team at SAOTA appreciates that each country or continent follows a different approach in design. However, they also know that the architecture philosophy is the same; function and form remain the core in architecture. SAOTO has set numerous real estate records and has become renowned in all corners of the world. Most of their clients are based in South Africa and the United States, but they’ve also had a variety of projects in Russia, Indonesia and Nigeria. And their projects truly push limits and show that good design has got great value. The team’s ambition to build and create prestigious projects against all odds has placed SAOTA on the world map. The company is not just focused on the quality of the design, but also on how their designs will improve their clients’ quality of life.

Tours & Activities in Bo-Kaap
United Airlines expands its service
On 6 June 2022 United Airlines officially expanded its service to Cape Town with three non-stop flights per week, year-round, between Cape Town International Airport and its New York hub, following their decision to resume their direct flights between Cape Town and Newark/New York, ahead of their initial schedule. The Boeing 787-9 aircraft was welcomed by a cheery crowd – a mixture of a waiting public, representatives from the Western Cape government & the City of Cape Town, representatives from ACSA and United Airlines, Wesgro’s Air Access team, United Airlines’ cabin crew, as well as the CTT Penguins – all joined in to celebrate the start of the year-round route. Supporting the economic recovery in the Western Cape and providing muchneeded relief to the tourism and hospitality sector in the province, the New York/ Newark – Cape Town route is expected to generate R523-million worth of direct tourism spend within its first year of operation (June 2022-May 2023).
The Bo-Kaap is a community with a uniquely rich history and culture and one of the most visited areas in the city. You can find the best koesisters, sweet treats and Cape Malay food in the Bo Kaap too. Many restaurants, vendors and traders are doing their best to recover from the impact of the pandemic. To ensure they get through this, and thrive again, support local businesses and enjoy what’s on offer within their communities. Within the rich cultural history of the Bo-Kaap precinct is the Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum (IBKM), one of the earliest homes built in the Bo-Kaap area, dating back to the mid-eighteenth century. The Museum was established in 1978 as a satellite location of the SA Cultural History Museum. It was furnished as a house that depicts the lifestyle of a nineteenth-century Muslim family. The most recommended Tours and other activities in Bo-Kaap are: Cape Town three hour Malay Cooking Class and Lunch in Bo-Kaap, Cape Town three hour Bike Tour, Cape Town: Half- Day Table Mountain and City Tour and Cape Town: Introductory City Tour by Foot and Minibus, and many more.

Wine Town Stellenbosch South Africa’s heartland of wine goes on full display from 4 - 9 August, when it welcomes families and friends to its annual celebration of the grape, suitably called Wine Town Stellenbosch 2022. Inaugurated last year, Wine Town Stellenbosch features a diverse series of events and experiences intended to offer something for everyone. These include live music performances, farm walks, inspired meals, and tutored tastings – from formal to informal occasions – all featuring wine as the main attraction.
What better excuse to stock up on wines for the winter season? Franschhoek is Celebrating Bastille after a two-year hiatus on 16 - 17 July, taking place in the main road of Franschhoek, with all things French inspired. Dress up in your finest red, white and blue, not forgetting your beret, as you soak all that Franschhoek has to offer – great wines, delicious food and superb hospitality. The village’s Main Road will be abuzz with activities, which include Frenchinspired street food offerings from the restaurants situated along the way. Grab a freshly baked croissant, filled baguettes, croque monsieur, moules frites or a piping hot cinnamon sugar pancake as you take in the day’s festivities.
The format of the festival remains de-centralized. With events hosted around town and on wine farms, Wine Town Stellenbosch gives wine lovers the best opportunity to explore the region known for its heritage and world champion wines. One of the main attractions of Wine Town Stellenbosch 2022 will be Stellenbosch Wine Festival, a two-day showcase of local wines to be held in the Stellenbosch Town Hall. Over 200 wines will be represented, while food prepared by renowned chef Bertus Basson will be available too.
Channel your inner Marie Antoinette or Charles de Gaulle for the day by hiring a costume. Franschhoek’s local band will add to the festive vibe throughout the weekend at the Town Hall.
In town, Stellenbosch’s popular vibe gets extra energy during Wine Town Stellenbosch. There will be a special walk-around tasting to be held at Simon Wine Emporium on 9 August.

kids milk drinks paired with cookies “OK, kids, we’re off winetasting.” Much eye-rolling, followed by one word uttered in unison. “Boring!” Now rewind. “Guys, the grownups are planning a wine tasting at Nederburg. We’ve planned something very similar for you. You’ll be able to taste different flavoured chocolate milk drinks paired with a selection of cookies. You get to sip and nibble and compare and decide which combo’s the nicest. What do you think?” “Yay, can we go there now?” they ask. Jerry Kennedy of Nederburg’s The Manor eatery says, “We understand that children need fun activities of their own. So apart from the milk and cookie pairings, we offer cupcake decoration workshops, we arrange picnic boxes with a delicious collection of snacks you’d be happy to see them eating and drinking.” Jerry says the accent this winter is on indoor activities, but weather permitting, “We set the picnics up on the beautiful rolling lawns, under the shade of the plane trees or on our stoep and keep a close eye on everyone.” There’s also Jenga and a range of lawn games, jungle gyms and a zip-line, tree house, swings and more to keep the children occupied. A Winter of Content at Benguela Cove Guests can be a winemaker for a day and participate in a hands-on wine blending experience in the state-of-the-art winery. It is an opportunity to see exactly what happens in a vineyard wine cellar and blend your own wine from the estate cultivars with guidance from the vineyard team. Bookings are for a minimum of four guests at R400 per person, with a maximum group size of 15 people.
Visitors to Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate can expect to be met with roaring log fires and a warm welcome for a great day out this winter, says estate developer Penny Streeter OBE. There is a range of new experiences to enjoy amid the natural beauty of this protected environment, which is committed to the WWF’s Conservation Champions’ charter. The estate will continue to feature pontoon cruises on the Lady Bonnie throughout the winter season. This is an ideal time for whale watching, as well as spotting the wild horses that roam the lagoon cove. The hour-long cruise is free for two guests when they buy any case of wine, available from Wednesday to Sunday, from 10am to 4pm.
The estate also offers private vineyard tours with a gourmet dining experience. This includes a tasting session of five estate wines in the vineyards while overlooking the lagoon. The tour finishes with a gourmet two-course lunch at the estate’s Moody Lagoon restaurant, with seasonal fresh produce, which can be paired with award-winning wines, at R800, available from Wednesday to Sunday weekly.
Benguela Cove is home to the 200-hectare wine farm in one of South Africa’s most precious coastal environments, set within a protected nature reserve. The estate is home to some 100 species of birds including owls, blue cranes, guinea fowl and flamingos within its protected reserves and wetlands. Visitors might also spot the small buck, mountain leopards and wild horses that are also known to make an appearance on the estate.
The Art of Living Exhibition continues throughout the winter months at Benguela Cove. It features a new range of works by established and emerging artists working in various modern styles and materials. Guests can enjoy a glass of wine while viewing the paintings and sculptures, which are all for sale, in the relaxed atmosphere of the gallery and outside areas overlooking the lagoon.
To keep the chilly blues at bay, there is a new winter tasting special in the hospitality area. This includes freshly baked ciabatta, together with cheese fondue and a selection of dips, and Glühwein, made from the vineyard’s red wine.
During the winter months, the estate organises team-building and group events for businesses and other organisations, including schools. In the relaxed atmosphere of the estate, guests can enjoy a round of pirate-themed miniature golf, with its 18-holes and range of challenging obstacles.
This can all be enjoyed in the tasting room with log fires, and views across Benguela Cove: seven days a week until August 31st at R320 for two guests.
