The movie “Bucket List” popularised the concept of epic adventures in pursuit of things you want to achieve. It inspired us to dream big and continues to challenge us to achieve big, hairy, audacious goals.

Samantha Pillay, Director at First Loyalty Plus, is a strong supporter of bucket lists and believes that you are never too old or too young to have one. It’s a great tool to keep life interesting, and it will challenge and inspire you to make those dreams become a reality.

“So, fill your bucket list with dreams that have no boundaries; things that will inspire the adventurer in you.”

Samantha shares her top five reasons for having a bucket list:

Forces you to dream, keeps you motivated, gives you something to look forward to, create new experiences and memories, and gives you a sense of accomplishment.

Forces you to dream

A bucket list is a license to dream BIG! It helps you to envision some of the major highlights of your life that you would like to happen, those things or places that give you a jolt of excitement when you think about them.

And when you write them down, suddenly they seem more real and turn into goals and best of all, there aren’t the limitations of time and money to constrain you.

Meet Sustainability Challenge Winner

On 26 August 2022, Lizl Naude of Lilly Loompa Upcycled Homeware was announced as the winner of the Stellenbosch Network #ideasforchange Challenge.

Cape Town Designer, Lizl Naude from Paarl, is known far and wide for her quirky, upcycled décor items. But more than that, she is known for her purposeful and environmentally consciousness approach to design. In 2020, during the pandemic, she launched her “My Africa Lap Desk” - made with discarded, waste material.

Compared to Europe and some first-world countries, South Africa is lagging in terms of seeing the value of recycling and upcycling. Over the last 5 years, Lilly Loompa Upcycled Homeware has been changing this narrative by producing highquality products made with discarded waste material and introducing it to the market.

“We collect all our material from neighbouring wine farms, construction sites, industrial kitchens and waste dump sites. It then goes through a process of cleaning and restoration, and finally, it is transformed into a beautiful and usable product to use in your home,” says Lizl.

“My family and I lost all our material possessions a few times between 2006-2016. This caused immense financial suffering and setback. During this desperate time, I prayed for a solution and I clearly understood that the way out for my family, and others, was ‘Waste’. Lilly Loompa (Pty) Ltd has been trading since 2018 and currently employ three people and out source teams.”

Lizl’s vision is to pioneer the way to a cleaner South Africa through innovative upcycling. Her goal is to lessen the amount of waste to landfill by designing and manufacturing desirable and usable homeware products that people can purchase on their online store.

“Through our enterprise, we want to raise awareness on what can be done with waste material. There is value found in waste and opportunities available for the communities of Stellenbosch and Paarl through collecting waste, and earning an income.”

“We want to work with scientists and engineers from University of Stellenbosch and CSIR and look at harvesting and creating new kind of materials from current waste streams. We believe there is value in waste that is overlooked, and with more research and innovation, it can be a much-needed commodity,” Lizl concludes.

Eco-friendly, handcrafted and 100% South African, each Lilly Loompa piece, once trash, is now a meaningful piece of treasure.

Escape to the Cape Karoo

Known for its wide-open spaces, the Cape Karoo is where you want to go when the pace of city life is something you would like to escape. This is where you go to get off the grid.

A place of incredible beauty, wild game, clear skies and magical sunsets, the Cape Karoo has a number of Nature Reserves and game farms, boasting an abundance of wildlife. The Karoo National Park, for example, is home to black rhino, lions, and other wild game.

Another animal in abundance in the Karoo is sheep, who roam ‘freely’ around the area on large plots of land, sampling a wide range of indigenous, aromatic plants. As a result, the Karoo has become famous for its succulent and tasty lamb dishes.

Beaufort West, the largest town in the arid Great Karoo region, is known as the “Capital of the Karoo”. It is the centre of an agricultural district based mainly on sheep farming. Next door to Beaufort West is the Karoo National Park - a sanctuary for herds of springbok, gemsbok (or Oryx), Cape Mountain zebra, red hartebeest, black rhinoceros, eland, kudu, klipspringer, bat-eared foxes, black-backed jackal, ostriches, and, since fairly recently, lions.

Cape Karoo Towns to visit: Murraysburg, Laingsburg, Matjiesfontein, Prince Albert, Leeu Gamka, Nelspoort, and Beaufort West.

Keeps you motivated

One of the benefits of a bucket list is that it helps you plan and get motivated - without motivation, your dreams will never become anything more than that. When you are motivated, it leads to enhanced wellbeing and gives you a sense of purpose to achieve your goals.

Gives you something to look forward to What’s life without some excitement? Having a sense of anticipation will get you excited and ensure that you continue acting on what’s important to you.

Create new experiences and memories

Life is a collection of moments and memories. When opportunity knocks on your door to do some thing different, embrace it, even if it’s not on your bucket list. Either way, these will become precious memories that will give you a sense of achievement and fulfilment.

Gives you a sense of accomplishment - In the words of Roz Savage, the first woman to row solo across three oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian, “The bigger the challenge, the bigger the sense of accomplishment when you get to the end of it.”

“If your bucket list includes new experiences that involve travel, a loyalty programme such as First Loyalty Plus, South Africa’s best all-round loyalty pro gramme, can help you visit your dream destination, sooner than you might think,” concludes Samantha.

Festive Lights Switch-On Event shines again

Taking place on the Grand Parade and along Adderley Street in Cape Town, the City of Cape Town’s largest open-air free entertainment event, the annual Festive Lights Switch-On, which celebrates the official turning on of the Festive Lights in Adderley Street, will take place on Sunday, 27 November 2022.

The theme for this year’s extravaganza celebrates Capetonians’ resilience, and how, as a united force, challenges can be overcome. ‘Cape Town - City of Hope’ encapsulates that feeling of expectation, promise and irrepressible energy that is wrapped up in all the people who call the city home.

The entertainment programme will kick off at 16:00 on Sunday, 27 November, with the official switch-on moment expected at around 20:30 in the evening. The evening will wrap up at 22:00, with a spectacular choreographed video mapping lights display across City Hall, always something that sparks wonder and awe for those lucky enough to be there.

The Festive Lights Switch-On also heralds the start of South Africa’s summer, a perfect time to get out and get things done, too. Therefore, supporting some of the City’s key strategic pillars, this year’s Festive Lights event will also run paral lel awareness campaigns around the spring-cleaning and clean energy missions, which underpin how residents can live smart – all year round.

In fact, for the first time, the Festive Lights Switch-On event in 2022, will be powered by renewable energy, thanks to the green credits banked by the City by way of the Darling Wind Farm, with whom the City has a partnership.

NSRI International Award

“We all want our children to not be afraid of water and to learn to swim early, not only for their safety, but also for their enjoyment. However, not everyone can afford swimming lessons. And access to safe, clean water to learn to swim in is a real challenge, especially in the underprivileged parts of South Africa.”

This is according to Andrew Ingram, Drowning Prevention Manager at the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) who is happy to announce that the NSRI has won the International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF) Award for the organization’s innovative Survival Swimming Centres.

Ingram states with so many different ideas the organization has, it just goes to show the ability of the NSRI volunteers and staff to come up with new ideas that make such a huge difference to South Africans.

The NSRI centre is a 6-metre long swimming pool built in the back of a 12-metre shipping container. It is completely self-sufficient; it includes hi-tech monitoring equipment to ensure safety and high-quality water for the children to swim in.

| City lifeguards dive in

Beach and pool lifeguards took to the water last month as the gradual reopening of pools started and visitors began taking advantage of the warmer weather to make a beeline for the coast.

According to the City’s drowning prevention plan, lifeguards will be on duty at 32 swimming pools and 29 beaches, tidal pools and stretches of coast this season. The City offers a number of safe swimming awareness drives and campaigns to prevent drownings.

Remember, alcohol is not permitted on City beaches or at public swimming pools. It results in slow physical reaction time should you find yourself in trouble in the water and reduces the impact of CPR. The consumption of alcohol also causes someone to misjudge their swimming abilities and lead them to take risks that they ordinarily would not take when sober.

Beachgoers are reminded to only swim where there are lifeguards on duty and where signs indicate it is safe to do so. Always supervise children near water, dressing them in bright colours to make sure that lifeguards can see them in the water. Remember that the best form of supervision is to be engaged with young children in the water when at play, rather than watching from a distance, which leaves them at risk.

Always swim between the red and yellow flags set up by lifeguards at the beach. These indicate safer, supervised swimming areas. Areas outside these flags might conceal dangerous currents and tides.

The NSRI is no stranger to receiving IMRF Awards. In 2016 they were runners-up for an Outstanding Team Contribution, in recognition of their water safety lessons for children, in 2018 their Pink Rescue Buoys won the Innovation and Technology section, in 2019 they were runners-up for the purpose designed rescue stretcher, and lastly, in 2021 they were awarded winner in Innovation and Technology for the JetRIB, a revolutionary surf rescue craft, made by Admiral Powercats and Droomers Yamaha with NSRI.

“The SSC project would have been completely impossible to do as a moneymaking concern, but because we have so many generous sponsors within the swimming and constriction companies, we are able to do it. Our containers are donated, the circulation filtration systems are donated; the swimming pool is donated and so on,” concludes Ingram.

| Tips for airline travel

can be used for

the perfect place to enjoy a great

floor

The airline industry has been dramatically impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, and recovery has been bumpy. Airlines have gone into liquidation, new entrants have emerged, and ticket prices have increased due to limited seating and the rising cost of jet fuel. Travellers now face long queues, exorbitant charges, and delayed or cancelled flights.

“It’s essential to do your homework before parting with your hard-earned cash for the holidays. Before you take out your credit card and book a flight, calculate what the entire trip will cost you, and check that this falls within your budget. Then, search for the best possible deal, while being aware that there are often hidden costs involved when booking a holiday,” says Shafeeka Anthony, Marketing Manager of JustMoney.

Some tips from JustMoney.co.za for getting the best airline deal include: Book your tickets early if you have holiday plans, to avoid capacity constraints. Use flight deal search websites to compare prices, and stay incognito while searching. Be flexible with your travel dates and consider flying during an off-peak day or time. Make the most of rewards programmes and use points built up via your bank or gym membership. Paying with your credit card should ensure you have built-in insurance and can earn more points. Check out budget airlines, but be aware of additional charges for seat selection, meals on board, and luggage. Compare these with a full-service airline.

If you plan to travel overseas, check out alternative airports close to your destination. Domestic flights tend to be cheaper than international flights that cover the same distance. It could be worthwhile going by rail or bus to cross a border, and from there using a domestic flight. Travel light - hand luggage is usually free. If you require extra baggage, book online when buying your ticket, as this is cheaper than paying at the airport.

Flights with layovers (intermediate stops at airports of up to 23 hours) and stopovers (stops of more than 24 hours between the arrival of one flight and the departure of the next flight) take longer to reach your destination. However, the savings could be worthwhile, and if you extend your stopover by a few days, you can visit an additional country.

“Given that airlines are experiencing staff shortages, thousands of cancelled flights, and lost baggage, a final tip is to ensure that you read the fine print so that you are aware of how the airline will assist you if there are problems,” says Anthony. “Paying a little more for a ticket that includes flight flexibility, and purchasing comprehensive insurance, could pay off in the long run.”

Eat Out

Restaurant Awards are back

South Africa’s biggest restaurant awards are back after two years, and the judges have traversed the country to uncover the best places to dine. Their verdicts will be announced at the Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant Awards at the Grand Arena in Cape Town on 20 November 2022.

The event has become a culinary highlight unto itself. The food served at the Eat Out Awards aims to capture the essence of fine dining in South Africa and has delighted hundreds of guests over the years. Cooking at this year’s anticipated ceremony will be some of South Africa’s leading chefs, educators and innovation specialists. Each of these chefs was chosen not only for their passion, technical skills and expertise, but also for how they are helping to motivate, develop and improve the South African food industry.

The 2022 awards have also been a dream partnership with headline sponsor Woolworths, who offer the kind of sustainably farmed, high-quality fresh produce and ingredients that allows South Africans to create restaurant-quality dishes at home.

Chan Pillay, Woolworths Foods Divisional Director: Commercial, says: “We are really excited to be partnering with the Eat Out Awards this year. It’s no secret that at Woolworths we pride ourselves on offering a wide variety of the best quality and flavour of food products, from ingredients to ready-made meals, sourced or made with the customer and environment in mind. To be part of this highly anticipated annual event that celebrates the best of what our country has to offer on the food front is an honour, and a total alignment where values are concerned, as it’s the hope of both Woolworths and Eat Out to inspire South Africans to eat well.”

Hospitality not a job but a lifestyle

Christmas has come early for 20-year-old Daniël de Bruin from Worcester in the Western Cape.

In December Daniël will be heading to Nice on the French Riviera to take up a two-month internship at Michelin-star Restaurant JAN under the tutelage of South African culinary superstar, Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen.

Van der Westhuizen’s journey to becoming one of the first South African chefs to be awarded a Michelin star has captured the imagination of foodies around the world. To be taken up in the Michelin firmament is arguably the culinary world’s highest honour, but to venture to France and receive the accolade in Michelin ter ritory is a rare feat.

De Bruin and fellow IIE School of Hospitality & Service Management (HSM) student Marc Trollip were chosen for a paid internship at the restaurant, with all their flights and accommodation covered. De Bruin – who will be working front-ofhouse – is currently in his second year studying a degree in hospitality and service management. He chose to study at The IIE SH&SM because he feels it promises international opportunities.

De Bruin is counting down the days until he embarks on this once-in-a-life time experience.

“Learning from Jan and working at his restaurant will be the best way for me to learn how to build a brand of my own. French cuisine has always been something I want to try, and now not only do I get to learn more about it while working at JAN, but I’ll also get to learn more about French culture.”

Dream Big

“Someone who loves the service industry will always try to please people. A person who focuses on the finer details and that pays attention to the body lan guage and the facial expressions of people will automatically provide an overall better service,” Daniël said.

“The hospitality industry is so diverse. You can do anything within it if you set your mind to it. Always dream big because your dreams will most likely become true. All of this is only possible if you believe in yourself and if you have a true passion for what you do.”

“Never work just for the money. Someone working at the Silo Hotel in Cape Town once told me that working in the hospitality industry is not a job, it’s a lifestyle,” De Bruin concluded.

Time Out Market concept is coming to Cape Town

In commemoration of World Food Day that took place in October, a group of Woolworths employees from Stellenbosch Eikestad Mall store rolled up their sleeves and went to work with interns and young farmers at the Living Soil Com munity Learning farm - urging action that promotes inclusivity and the building of sustainable food systems for everyone everywhere.

Situated in Lynedoch Stellenbosch, the Living Soils Community Learning farm focuses on re-engaging and developing young black farmers, particularly women in entry level regenerative farming to productively grow nutritious food, strengthen local and long-term community food security efforts and provide livelihood oppor tunities from farming.

Learn new skills & be inspired

“We learnt a lot about growing food for one’s community and were delighted that we could lend a hand at clearing some land for more crops to be planted in the summer planting season. Getting involved in my local community was so much fun and a unique experience to help build a better future towards foods security. The new skills I learned have inspired me to start my own veggie garden at home,” says Anton van der Berg, Store Manager Woolworths Eikestad Mall.

“This year’s World Food Day theme is to ‘Leave NO ONE behind’, so calls for all of us to go out into our communities to help build a sustainable world where everyone, everywhere has regular access to enough nutritious food and a #zero hunger world by 2030. For many years, Woolworths has been working to make a sustainable and positive impact on alleviating hunger in South Africa. We believe that food security and access to food is a fundamental human right and have over this last year donated R 6 million to organisations, like the Living Soils Com munity Learning farm to empower communities across South Africa to grow more food and become food secure,” confirms Zinzi Mgolodela, Woolworths Corporate Affairs Director.

Cape Town will soon be home to Africa’s first Time Out Market – a concept that showcases a city’s best food and drink experiences under one roof.

The first Time Out Market opened in 2014 in a historic market hall in Lisbon, Portugal quickly turning into the most popular destination in the city with over 4 million visitors a year. The success of Lisbon brought further expansion with Time Out Markets opening in: Miami, New York, Boston, Montreal, Chicago, and Dubai.

Time Out Market Cape Town is expected to open towards the end of 2023 at the V&A Waterfront. Visitors will get to taste food from local top chefs and much-loved restaurateurs, sip cocktails from award-winning mixologists and enjoy culture and entertainment from rising talents. The space will span 27,000 sq ft and feature fourteen kitchens, four bars and one stage. With approximately 750 seats, guests will be able to sit indoors or quayside with the spectacular view of Table Mountain as a backdrop.

“We are delighted to have secured this great offering,” says David Green, CEO of V&A Waterfront Holdings. “Time Out Market coming to our city reaffirms Cape Town as one of the world’s leading tourism destinations. We look forward to the vibrant offering and another way of showcasing local culinary expertise.”

Cape Town Air Access Claims prestigious Aviation Award

“It is a great honour to receive the prestigious Destination Award at World Routes 2022,” said Wesgro CEO and Official Spokesperson of Cape Town Air Access, Wrenelle Stander.

The establishment of new routes to unserved destinations remains at the heart of the project’s objectives, however, following the pandemic, the consolidation of capacity through route expansion and retention has become equally important.

The project plays a pivotal role in domestic network development and position ing and unlocking Cape Town’s air cargo potential.

Since March 2021, nine routes and four new destinations have been announced for Cape Town. The new routes include Airlink’s non-stop, three-weekly service from Maputo, Mozambique (31 August) and Air Belgium’s two-weekly, direct flight from Brussels, Belgium commencing 14 September. Eurowings Discover will fly from France to one of the most iconic and remote destinations in the world, the Kruger National Park, commencing on 15 November 2022.

The Cape Town Air Access (CTAA) project – powered by Wesgro – proudly walked away with the Destination award at World Routes 2022 hosted in Las Vegas recently. With the awards ceremony comprised of seven categories total ling 1 000 collective nominations, this is the first time the CTAA project has won the award - following recognition as runner-up at World Routes 2018.

The World Routes event is the biggest route development conference in the world, with over 2 000 attendees present from the aviation industry. Nominated and judged by airlines, the awards ceremony is highly regarded, recognising the outstanding marketing services that have supported the launch of new air routes, and the development of existing services.

Through collective efforts, United Airlines will begin a non-stop, Washington DC (IAD) service on 18 November complementing their current year-round Newark (EWR) route to CPT, both as three-weekly services. Delta Air Lines will commence a daily four-weekly service to Atlanta, USA, on a triangular ATL-JNB-CPT ATL routing on 2 December, as well as three non-stop, direct flights between ATL-CPT on 18 December.

The ramp up in connectivity from these two mega American airlines means that Cape Town will now enjoy 13 year-round flights per week to the USA compared to December 2019 when only three seasonal flights operated per week.

Finally, after exiting the destination in 2015, Virgin Atlantic will make their longawaited return to CPT with a daily seasonal service from London, Heathrow starting IATA winter 2022/23.

Benguela Cove | Three Double Golds at Veritas Wine Awards

Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate, the family-run wine farm in Hermanus, has won three double gold medals at the annual Veritas Wine Awards on 8th October 2022, where all the panel judges voted unanimously to award more than 93 points out of 100, achieved for a second successive year.

“All of our wines are estate-grown, produced and bottled here. It’s a rarity these days, but it ensures that buyers know they are getting wines that are unique and authentic in style - and are now recognised consistently for their quality by a panel of independent judges,” says Johann Fourie, cellar master at Benguela Cove.

“It’s a big achievement in just 10 years, from when the Streeter family bought and invested in this very special place in the cool-climate Walker Bay region, located on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s at the lowest height, at sea level, and with the longest seaboard of any vineyard in the world.”

Achieving the top awards for a sparkling, white and red wine as well shows the diversity and consistency of the estate’s portfolio, says Fourie. He attributes this to the skills of the vineyard team in working with an unusually wide range of growing conditions – including the diversity of soil, slopes, and microclimates in the lagoon location, which is separated from the ocean by a sandbar.

Benguela Cove’s Estate Collage 2019 Red Blend, Joie de Vivre 2018, Cap Clas sique sparkling wine and Catalina Sémillon 2017 all received double gold, with a further gold for the Vinography Petit Verdot 2020.

The Collage 2019 Red Blend added to a series of recent triumphs that have included top awards in the Tim Atkin South African Special Report, Michelangelo, Winemag and Platter’s competitions.

The Catalina Sémillon 2017’s success in the museum class proves that this is a white wine that can age and improve in the bottle over time, says Fourie, bringing forth its intense, complex flavours.

Sparkling wine is a relatively recent focus for Benguela Cove, with its Joie de Vivre winning double gold for a second year in a row in Veritas, for only its second vintage. The cool climate of Walker Bay is synonymous with outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and the grapes are balanced to produce a sophisticated Méthode Cap Classique (MCC).

The Veritas Awards is the longest-running and one of the most prestigious wine competitions in South Africa, dating back to 1991. The Veritas Awards this year drew 1,312 entries, which were judged by a jury of 70 local wine specialists For more information visit www.www.benguelacove.co.za

South African Wine Industry | Commitment to sustainability

Over the three days from 5-7 October 2022, visitors from 60 different countries attended CapeWine 2022 - the premier trade showcase for the wine industry at the Cape Town Interna tional Convention Centre. A record-breaking 417 exhibiting producers showcased their wines under one roof whilst illustrating the 360 degrees of sustainability efforts, each focusing on the pillars of planet, people and prosperity.

A combination of both local and international trade and media guests attended a host of semi nars, tastings and producer events where they could experience a wide range of South Africa’s top wines and learn more about the regions and varietals that make this country’s wine so unique.

Creating a sustainable future for the wine industry, its people, the land we farm and focusing on future generations was one part of the theme. The other highlights the 363-year-long history of the South African wine industry.

Each element of CapeWine was meticulously crafted to ensure that the most sustainable prac tices were followed with recyclable stands, minimal waste, carbon offsetting and sustainable packaging and the producers were inspired to tell their individual stories of their sustainability journeys.

As the doors closed on a truly successful event and the industry reflects on what was a busy, yet exhilarating week for all, we are excited to reap the rewards in the international trade as they return with a renewed excitement about South African wine and the media continue to sing the praises of an industry which has positioned itself as a major player in international markets, and we are already looking forward to the next edition of CapeWine, which is set to take place in 2025.

V&A Waterfront trades parking space for giant batteries

Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront is planning to double its rooftop solar capacity and install massive batteries in parking spaces to ward off load shedding, especially during peak-use periods.

The V&A Waterfront runs 48 generators to keep its shops, restaurants, and mall infrastructure powered during load shedding, burning through a massive amount of diesel and cash. Central fuel tanks around the precinct ensure that these generators are well-fed, while a “smart grid” system introduces external power in a phased and controlled manner, with little disruption to the precinct’s operations.

The V&A Waterfront does have rooftop solar panels that generate 2MW of energy. But this generation peaks during the day and is quickly gobbled up by the shopping centres’ air conditioning. Additional solar panels, supported by the re-roofing of Victoria Wharf, which is currently underway, will double the V&A Waterfront’s generation capacity. But even with that, the sun alone will only answer 15% of the precinct’s power needs.

Wind turbines of various sizes and a waste-to-energy biomass power plant are some of the V&A Waterfront’s long-term sustainability projects, so are battery storage solutions. Battery storage will allow the V&A Waterfront to hoard power generated by the likes of its solar panels – along with any additional renewable projects – and dispatch that energy when necessary.

These giant batteries will replace some parking spaces around the V&A Waterfront. This aligns with the precinct’s plans to combat traffic congestion by opening new roads and encouraging visitors to use drop-and-go locations serviced by e-hailing cabs and busses.

The V&A Waterfront has already spent more than R1 billion on upgrades to its roadways, landscaping, bigger and better drop-and-go locations, improvements to the Vic Wharf shopping centre, the Blackwater treatment plants, and emergency power to mitigate load shedding.

Renewable energy will also be used to power the V&A Waterfront’s new 3.3 megalitre desalination plant, scheduled to come online in early 2024, which will produce enough water to supply all the precinct’s needs.
