Megan Carmil Holmes may be Deaf, but she is anything but silent. This Group Finance Officer by profession has recently become Ms Deaf International 2022, but as more than just a pageant titleholder, she’s using her new-found platform to make a difference. She is running the Totalsports Two Oceans Half Marathon to fundraise for Hear Us, an organization that assists children and adults in obtaining cochlear implants, ultimately changing their lives. Megan shares her journey and how being Deaf has impacted her life, both positively and negatively. Growing up as a Deaf person, Megan faced communication barriers in everyday life. “Being Deaf has a huge impact negatively on everyday life, especially when you are trying to find another job, get a better salary and improve life. Communication barriers are the number one issue for us wherever you go,” Megan explained.

Megan’s personal experience with cochlear implants led her to support Hear Us. “It can improve hearing in Deaf people who are no longer helped by using hearing aids, and this is why I decided to go for my cochlear implant a few years ago. It can also improve communication and quality of life,” Megan said. “It’s very expensive, and I was thinking of children and adults coming from disadvantaged backgrounds that are unable to afford to get Cochlear implants, and I want to help improve their quality of life.”

When we asked her about her inspiration for taking on this fundraising challenge, Megan cited her daughter. Her daughter was born Deaf and received her first cochlear implant at the age of one, and the second one after the age of two. “She inspired me to do this fundraising challenge and to run to make a difference for others,” Megan said.

Megan has always been an avid cyclist and has used it to help her prepare for the Totalsports Two Oceans Half Marathon. As Megan continues her training and fundraising efforts, she hopes to raise awareness for cochlear implants and spread Deaf awareness to the hearing community effectively. She also hopes for South African Sign Language to be the official 12th language, which can make everyday life easier for Deaf people.

Positive Behaviour Intervention and Resource

Centre breaking ground

The Positive Behaviour Intervention and Resource Centre (PBIRC) in Wynberg is the first special school of its kind in South Africa.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) launched a pilot programme in 2018 that was facilitated by Neville Goliath, Provincial Manager: Positive Behaviour, to conceptualise and operationalise the possibility of a support programme for in-school learners that present with high-level behavioural needs.

A heritage site in Wynberg, previously known as Tenterden Child and Youth Care Centre, was acquired by the WCED to test the feasibility of such a programme. The results of the pilot programme were good and the registration of the Positive Behaviour Intervention and Resource Centre (PBIRC) was granted on 1 January 2022.

The programme finds itself as part of a continuum of support responses to learner behavioural needs. The behaviour support pathway places this programme at the high-level of support to learners experiencing behaviour as a barrier to learning.

Children at the centre engage with adults with extensive experience in working with learners at risk, specialised teachers, psychologists and occupational therapists that are led by a principal and renowned positive behaviour practitioner, Moosa Mahadick.

The individual Support Plan of the learner could comprise psycho-social interventions and occupational therapy support to respond to the functional challenges that the child might experience. These therapeutic needs respond to the challenges in the life space of the child and this could include coping with conflict, dealing with anger expression, problem-solving skills and identifying resiliency factors required to survive their lives.

Parental participation is an important participant in the programme. However, this programme prides itself in the practice of giving these children relationships that are meaningful and not harmful. Therefore, it’s not about the programme, but what the child finds in a relationship.

The Positive Behaviour Intervention & Resource Centre is more than just a school; it’s a deliberate attempt to draw a circle that takes kids in. Creating a space where kids belong and to reconnect them with the important relationship that a child needs in an adult. To guide them through their rites of passage towards adulthood and in so doing, acquire the vital skills only found in relationships.

Waterfront's Cape Wheel reopens at new location

The V&A Waterfront’s Cape Wheel is reopening after a sevenmonth break to relocate it to a new location set to give passengers memorable new views of the city and Granger Bay, from stunning sunrises to sunsets and night-time and more.

Easily one of the Waterfront’s most recognisable attractions, the Cape Wheel, which came into operation in 2008, has delighted international and local visitors, young and old alike, at its previous location between the Victoria Wharf Shopping Centre and the Union Castle Square in front of the kid’s playground and food court. Now located at the V&A’s Breakwater Boulevard overlooking the waters of Granger Bay, the wheel transforms Breakwater Boulevard into a new visitor attraction, with special elevated views across Granger Bay on one side, Robben Island in the distance, views of Table Mountain on the other end, as well as sights of Signal Hill and the Cape Town stadium.

Riders will, from 40 m up, have below them the sight of commercial shipping traffic with giant container ships coming and going, large cruise and charter boats heading in and out of the harbour, kayakers accompanied by schools of dolphins as well as the possibility of spotting the occasional whales that visit the bay from time to time.

V&A Waterfront Chief Executive Officer, David Green said the time is right to restart the operation of the wheel, just ahead of the coming Easter holidays as part of the large package of exciting changes that have been part of the economic recovery of the Waterfront that were revealed ahead of the year-end festive season that the Waterfront.

The new site, close to the Waterfront’s boardwalk, has easy access to the Breakwater parking garage, while also providing a more open and relaxed public space for visitors to access the wheel.

By invitation, guests were able to jump into 12 branded electric vehicles (EVs) and drive roads that included the world-famous Chapmans Peak Drive. En-route, the drivers completed a recharge challenge that demonstrated the ability modern EV’s have to recharge their battery whilst under motion.

The evrt Road Trip 2024 will see a range of electric vehicles driving from Pretoria to Cape Town over 10 days, arriving at the racetrack to showcase EV technology at next year’s race weekend.

On race day, the E-Fest ELECTRIC event opened within the E-Prix precinct, adjacent to the racetrack. Racegoers were able to test-drive electric vehicles, bikes, and scooters, and to learn more about various rechargers, batteries and inverters. Over 750 EV test drives took place.

The 5th round of the Formula E World Championship was held for the first time on African soil, in Cape Town on Saturday, 25th February. To maximise the purpose-led event, a 7-day, co-located E-Fest was conceptualised by the race promoter as a celebration of Go Green Africa, a commitment to playing a meaningful role in helping to accelerate Africa’s transition to a “Green Economy” in a just and inclusive way.

The race promoter, e-Movement, partnered with VUKA Group to launch E-Fest, a mix of events and entertainment that celebrated sustainability, alternative e-mobility and renewable energy solutions for South Africa and the African continent.

Harare, Zimbabwe - FlySafair plans to operate daily flights between Harare and Cape Town, opening new avenues for business and leisure between these two cities. FlySafair will add another three aircraft for travel on the new routes. They’ve also increased their staff complement to accommodate this and hope to have these FlySafair flights up and running by the end of Q3 in 2023.

Zanzibar - Business and leisure travellers can look forward to more frequent travels between South Africa and Zanzibar from 8 April. Zanzibar is an important tourist destination for travellers to and from South Africa; Tanzania also has strong trade ties with the country.

In addition to these new routes, the IASC has also granted FlySafair permission to operate five additional routes to Mauritius. This gives the airline the opportunity to offer daily flights between these two countries after gaining permission to operate flights to the island in December 2022.

ORIGIN OF THE LUND NAME

The modern day South African Lunds are of Scandinavian descent, and are direct descendants of the Vikings from the Middle Ages, hence the company name, Viking Deco. Rest assured, the family does not rebel and raid as history would suggest. The Lund name itself has a very interesting meaning…

In the early 1800s, Gustav Lund joins his uncle, the captain of a ship, on a voyage to India. During the trip Gustav gets ill with Scurvy. His uncle makes the decision to drop Gustav off at Cape Town to receive medical attention and get better with the idea that on the way back from India, Gustav will be picked up again. Gustav, being the hardworking man that he is, sets out to work after getting better. He would do odd jobs, and once finished, continue on his way. This would go on for quite a while, and finally he ended up in Kommetjie where he worked at a general store, and finally bought it and named it “Lund’s Shop”.

According to various sources, the name Lund means, “Man that lives in the woods “or “Man that works with wood from the forest”. The Lund family was not aware of this significant meaning of their name until much later into the existence of the company. It was almost as if we answered a calling by working with our hands and wood.

“We strongly believe that this is the reason why we are so passionate about what we do, and also why we are so good at it,” says Piet.

Celebrating the best of Sauvignon Blanc

The largest and most significant international competition dedicated to Sauvignon Blanc wine, which took place for the first time in South Africa in the competition’s 14-year history, culminated in a starlit dinner in the superb setting of Vergelegen wine estate in Somerset West.

The 2023 Concours Mondial du Sauvignon was hosted by the cultivar association Sauvignon Blanc South Africa, with national and international partners.

The dinner at the 323-year-old wine estate, a provincial heritage site, marked the conclusion of several days of sniffing, sipping, swirling and savouring by 40 international and 10 South African judges. They evaluated a record number of 1210 entries from 20 producer countries. This included 152 entries from South Africa.

Quentin Havaux, CEO Vinopres, which manages the technical aspects of Concours Mondial du Sauvignon tastings, said each wine was judged by five people. They represent diverse sectors – winemakers, buyers, media, sommeliers, oenologists and distributors – and 20 countries that span Belgium to Brazil.

The extremely varied geology and topography of the Western Cape, plus the diversity of winemaking styles, “make for complexity, and it is impossible to pin down one characteristic of local Sauvignon Blanc – but this is wonderful,” he said. “Every producer will receive feedback on their wine’s strengths and weaknesses.”

Sauvignon Blanc is South Africa’s top-selling cultivar and most exported varietal. According to Sauvignon Blanc South Africa, the first commercial Sauvignon varietal wine was produced by Verdun (now Asara) in 1977, with Backsberg and De Wetshof entering the market in 1980.

Sauvignon currently holds a 10.9% share of total area under vine in South Africa and is the third-most planted grape in the country.

SA wins big at 2023 Concours Mondial du Sauvignon

International judges awarded silver and gold medals to wines from 20 countries, announced on Monday, 20 March at ProWein in Düsseldorf, Germany.

South Africa ratified its ranking as a major Sauvignon Blanc producer country, winning 56 medals – 26 gold medals and 30 silver medals – along with an international trophy. The Villiera Bush Vine 2022 by Villiera Wines was awarded the Tonnellerie Sylvain trophy, which rewards the best wine matured in oak casks. Darling Cellars’ Gustus Sauvignon Blanc 2020 received the Revelation South Africa trophy for the best-performing South African wine at the show.

Wine Tourism - Top mavens to motivate & expand current thinking

“Brands, brand building and brand distinction” is the theme for the 2023 Wine Tourism Conference, sponsored by Wesgro, Delta Air Lines and WWF, that takes place on 17 May at Lanzerac, Stellenbosch. Margi Biggs, convenor of the annual event, now in its seventh year, has marshalled an impressive list of international and local marketing, branding and tourism experts and innovators as speakers for the event.

“On the whole, local wine tourism is doing well and is approaching recovery to 2019 levels,” says Biggs. “While we fervently hope this trend will continue, the global economic outlook remains uncertain. If we are to continue to attract longhaul international visitors as well as those closer to home, including domestically, we are going to have to be that much smarter, nimbler, and more compelling in our offerings and the way we deliver them.”

According to Andile Ntingi, founder of GetBiz, writing for Business Day, the South African government hopes to attract 21 million international visitors a year by 2030. In 2019, a total of 10,2 million travellers entered the country

Mike Ratcliffe, CEO of the Stellenbosch Wine Route, who has been a leading player in re-establishing the pre-eminence of Stellenbosch as a centre of excellence, will be addressing ways in which to build collective brand identities.

While Paul Siguqa, CEO of Klein Goederust in Franschhoek, will be looking at building a new South African brand; DTC futurist Andrew Douglas will be moderating a discussion on rebuilding established brands. Panellists to appear will be wine personalities Hein Koegelenberg, Kevin Arnold and Pieter Cronjé.

A panel discussion on how eco-conservation can impact brand building will be moderated by André Morgenthal, project manager of the Old Vine Project. Panellists will include Shelly Fuller of WWF South Africa, Jeremy Borg of Painted Wolf Wines and Kathryn Cilliers of Spier.

The journey of SA’s Jo Wessels – 7th

In early 2023, Jo Wessels was named the 7th best sommelier in the world as a representative of the South African Sommeliers Association.

The title of Meilleur Sommelier du Monde in Paris in 2023 was awarded to Raimonds Tomsons of Latvia. Since its inception in 1969, the contest has been likened to the Olympics of sommellerie.

Jo began his career in service at a coffee shop in Bloemfontein as a teenager, which he says instilled respect for the trade and the people working in it. Later, as a student at Stellenbosch, he worked in various restaurants, wine shops and tasting rooms, but it was at Rust en Vrede Restaurant where the sommelier bug really bit him.

He subsequently worked as a sommelier on luxury cruise ships. In 2015, he applied to study International Wine Business at Geisenheim University in Germany. While studying, he worked as a commis sommelier in a Michelin-starred restaurant in Wiesbaden. After Wiesbaden, Jo worked as a sommelier at Restaurant OPUS V in Mannheim for three years. Since 2022, he has worked at an innovative casual fine dining restaurant in Heidelberg called Mary Jane Space.

“Our philosophy is to treat our guests as though they are friends coming over for dinner on the weekend. It is a small team (only three chefs, and myself in service). There aren’t the hierarchies of many other fine dining establishments, nor the stress or long hours otherwise present. High-end gastronomy can be quite taxing on one’s personal health as I had a nasty burnout in 2021),” Jo explains.

Jo looks back on Family meals when he was growing up: “Sunday lunches were the highlight of the week. After church, my dad would put on classical music and fetch a special bottle from the cellar, and my mom would show off her cooking. It was mostly hearty and rustic dishes – roasts, casseroles, lasagne and often lamb from my aunt’s farm in the Karoo. It was at these lunches that I was introduced to some old Cape classic wines such as Meerlust, Alto and Rustenberg.”

“The tradition and the setting showed me how good wines shine on special occasions,” he explains.

Contemporary South African design meets modern local culinary flavours Vegan Restaurants in Cape Town

Chef Mmabatho Molefe’s modern Zulu cuisine offering at Emazulwini restaurant at Makers Landing at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, is a celebration of her culinary heritage and childhood food memories viewed through a 21st-century fine-dining lens.

Train, whose practice is informed by his own diverse heritage, describes his work as sitting at the intersection of two seemingly disparate worlds: one a Nguni upbringing rooted in family and culture, the other a western lineage intimately part of his birth.

Train brought to life his concept, which was partly inspired by the surrounds of the restaurant’s dockside location, with the help and guidance of Clout/SA, which facilitates opportunities for companies to support and collaborate with South African designers.

In the new-look Emazulwini, Molefe’s modern take on traditional food now has a setting that echoes its deeply South African roots with a modern global twist.

‘Clout/SA is proud to have initiated and managed an approach that we believe amplifies the incredible energy and food shared by Chef Mmabatho Molefe,’ says Lynch.

Considering that South Africa is one of the highest per capita meat-consuming countries in Africa, one might be surprised to discover that there are 14 fully vegan restaurants in Cape Town alone. Humane Society International/Africa and ProVeg South Africa have partnered to create a My Plant-Based City map of Cape Town to highlight these restaurants, as well as 16 other vegan-friendly eateries offering great plant-based options.

More and more South African consumers are looking for healthier, more environmentally friendly, and ethical food options. This has led to an increase in veg-friendly restaurants, serving everything from burgers and brownies to finedining dishes. Offerings cater to everyone, from those looking for healthy poke bowls featuring fresh whole foods, to others craving plant-based versions of fastfood favourites like cheeseburgers. Advances in food technology have meant that plant-based meat and dairy alternatives are now able to successfully mimic the taste and texture of animal products they replace.

In a big win for the South African media industry, Triggerfish is excited to bring the adventures of a new African superhero, Kiya, to children round the world. Kiya is the heroine in the animated action-adventure series called Kiya & the Kimoja Heroes –a show about a trio of friends that combine their everyday passions with extraordinary powers and teamwork. The series takes place in the fictional Kimoja City, a city inspired by the sights and sounds of southern Africa.

Hasbro has announced April 2023 as the international launch date for this new kids’ TV series, developed and co-produced by South African animation studio, Triggerfish. The show will be streamed on Disney Junior and Disney+ and broadcast on France Télévisions, amongst other channels, and released in South Africa later this year.

Grounded in recognisable elements of African styles, Kiya proudly mashes up her passions of dance and martial arts into unique routines, while having fun with her family and friends, as most kids do. An original concept by Robert Vargas, adapted from characters created by South Africans Marc Dey and Kelly Dillon, this action-adventure animated series follows Kiya, a seven-year-old African girl who was inspired by the antics of Dey’s daughter who played dress-up as a ninjaprincess but also saves the world, and, through Kiya, the team has wonderfully captured this duality in a heroine who boldly shines bright and makes things right with her two friends.

Two Oceans Aquarium - Turtle Network expansion

The Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation’s Turtle Conservation Centre team is taking up the call to get the message out there. With the growth of the Turtle Road Trip after 6 years, the turtle team has decided to split the education focus of turtle rescue into four targeted areas of the Western Cape. The main message they will be spreading is for those who come across a stranded turtle, to immediately contact the Turtle Rescue Hotline. From there, a permitted official will jump into action and take the necessary steps to get the turtle to the Two Oceans Aquarium’s Turtle Conservation Centre.

The turtle stranding season for 2023 officially started with the arrival of two loggerhead hatchlings at the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation’s Turtle Conservation Centre. They were found stranded near Cape Point recently and brought to the Turtle Conservation Centre. The turtle team anticipates this to be the first of over one hundred turtle hatchlings that will find their way into their care this year

The rescue of the first two turtles of the 2023 stranding season marks the importance of the Turtle Rescue Network and the continued

Turtles are a keystone species for the well-being of the marine ecosystem, and all seven species are considered endangered, largely because of human-caused hazards such as plastic pollution and fishing nets. This year, the Turtle Rescue Programme team hopes to expand the number of people who are equipped with the knowledge needed to save the life of a stranded turtle hatchling immensely, by visiting over 34 schools, and bringing them fun, interactive lessons. The aim is to create future turtle rescuers who are inspired to take action should the need arise.

As part of a five-year plan, the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation will roll out 10 informative signs located in strategic turtle stranding points along the coastal network. These signs include information on the different species of turtles that are found along the South African coastline, what to do if you find a turtle stranded on one of the beaches, and who to contact. The sign unveiled in Hermanus will be the fourth sign completed, with the first three in Struisbaai, Arniston and De Hoop respectively.

Endangered Knysna seahorse Spotted in Keurbooms Estuary in Plettenberg Bay

What does it take to spot the world’s most endangered seahorse? Quite a bit of patience apparently, a good eye and when the seahorse in question is sighted carrying eggs, well that’s cause for celebration!

Marine researcher, volunteer coordinator at the Orca Foundation and conservationist, Melissa Nel posted some rare photos of a Knysna seahorse carrying eggs on her Instagram account, with the caption.

“We’re about to have some baby seahorses in the Keurbooms estuary!” Melissa confessed that it was a very special sighting for her, as it took a couple of years to spot her first Knysna seahorse hiding in the eelgrass of the estuary in Plettenberg Bay,” she says.

“The reproductive behaviour of seahorses is notable in that the male carries the fertilised eggs,” - which is what Melissa photographed. After an elaborate courtship, the female uses an ovipositor to place her eggs into the male’s brood pouch, where the eggs are later fertilised. This delicate species is notoriously difficult to spot with a standard length of up to only 12 cm and colouration strongly influenced by the surrounding environment.

The Knysna seahorse is endemic to the South African coastline and is actually only known to be found in three estuaries in the world: Keurbooms, Knysna and the Swartvlei system in Sedgefield.

Interest in the marine life of the Keurbooms Estuary proved to be tremendous at last year’s Marine Science Symposium during the Plett Ocean Festival where Melissa’s colleague, Dr. Chantel Elston presented an impressive and well-received talk: “What lives in the Keurbooms Estuary?” The festival and marine science symposium will take place again this year in Plettenberg Bay from 30 June - 9 July 2023.

The limited range of the Knysna seahorse does put it at risk of extinction, and conservation plays a very important role. In fact, in the Keurbooms Estuary, a period of strong river flow may even have resulted in temporary extinction of this beautiful species in that location. Thankfully, the seahorse was found again in the estuary during more recent surveys conducted by the ORCA Foundation, with indications that the population diminished due to floods in 2007 and 2011.

The release of a new coffee table book, Against the Odds, is the remarkable story of leopards at the Cape that celebrates these big cats and conservation efforts to protect them.

Live Jazz Sundays are also on offer at the Moody Lagoon Restaurant every Sunday until April 23rd, from 13:00 to 16:00. A big annual event in the calendar of the Hermanus wine farm is the Easter Egg Hunt trail. This will take place from Saturday, April 1st until Monday, April 10th. CAPE TOWN OPERA brings ROSSINI’S 'STABAT MATER' to PAARL

This Easter, on Saturday, 8 April 2023 at 4pm, Cape Town Opera brings Rossini’s Stabat Mater to the beautiful Toringkerk in Paarl. This masterpiece is one of the best known and beloved hymns to Mary, presenting her grief at the crucifixion of her son Jesus Christ. Rossini’s extraordinary capacity for composing arias –inspired by his exceptional operatic skills – is matched by hauntingly beautiful and triumphant choral sections. The fusion of operatic drama and tender, reverent moments marks this work as one of the finest contributions to classical sacred music.

This once-off performance will feature the multi award-winning Cape Town Opera Chorus under the direction of Marvin Kernelle, with guest artists Hlengiwe Mkhwanazi (Soprano) and Minette du Toit Pearce (Mezzo-Soprano) alongside two of Cape Town Opera Soloists - Lukhanyo Moyake (Tenor) and Conroy Scott (Baritone). The Cape Town Opera company will also be collaborating with the Cape Town Symphony Choir, and maestro Adam Szmidt will conduct the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. Rossini’s Stabat Mater is certain to be a highlight in Cape Town’s classical music calendar.

GREYTON GENADENDAL CLASSICS FOR ALL

The Sonderend mountains towering above the villages of Greyton and Genadendal in the Overberg will soon come alive again with the sounds of beautiful classical music. The popular Greyton Genadendal Classics for All Festival takes place on the weekend of 12 – 14 May 2023.

Now in its 19th year, Classics for All is a small, intimate and unpretentious get-together for music lovers from all walks of life. The ethos behind this festival is to take audiences on an accessible classical music adventure, catering for the tastes of everyone, from the aficionado to the lesser devotee.

Twelve concerts will be performed in various churches in Greyton and Genadendal and on the historic The Oaks Estate, a few kilometres outside Greyton. Concert-goers can look forward to performances by the clarinet and piano duo from the Netherlands, Maria du Toit and Vera Kooper, Mixed Doubles featuring the critically acclaimed Lutesong Consort, the Disa Trio, the sensational Voces Cordis choir under the baton of award-winning conductor Andre van der Merwe, the Rainbow Exchange String, soloists such as Thobela Ntshanyana, Lynelle Kenned, Lente Louw, Zanne Stapelberg de Lange, Willem Bester and more. Two additional concerts will be performed by the Handevat Project String Orchestra, to be attended by learners of the six schools in Greyton, Genadendal and Bereaville.

U HI-TEC Marathon added to Walker Bay Outdoor Festival

In 2023, the eighth edition of the multi-sport festival will take place from the 27th of April to the 1st of May. The action will begin on Thursday with registration before Friday heralds the start of the sporting events with the LedLenser Twilight Run. The Marathon, Half-Marathon, and See & Sand Swim Run Jump take place on Saturday. Saturday and Sunday also offer athletes a selection of trail running events in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve. Whilst Sunday will play host to the long and short distance mountain bike races, in the beautiful Hemel en Aarde valley, as well as the Open Water Swims and HI-TEC Dash4Cash. This year the Dash4Cash will see a very great activation where the public can also get involved. Monday the 1st of May sees South Africa’s most scenic Triathlon events starting in the Old Harbour before the weekend concludes with a Junior triathlon for the future WBO athletes.

The HI-TEC Walker Bay Outdoor, a long weekend of sporting and entertainment festivities in Hermanus, is launching a road marathon alongside its existing half marathon, in 2023. Set to take place on Saturday, 29 April, the marathon route will showcase the spectacular scenery of the seaside Overberg town. It will also act as another of the cornerstone events, along with the ocean swim, mountain bike race and triathlon.

In between, there will be live music performances and ample opportunities to dance late into the night. Hermanus will also be abuzz with activity as the coffee shops, restaurants and market fill to the brim with outdoor enthusiasts. Wine tastings, adventure swims, treasure hunts, hikes in the beautiful Fernkloof Nature Reserve and the potential for an early whale sighting all add to the excitement around the HI-TEC Walker Bay Outdoor.
