Cape Town rugby supporters had a great chance to meet their Springbok Sevens heroes on Heritage Day, 24 September, at the Springbok Experience. The occasion marked the first birthday anniversary of the Springbok Experience, the state of the art museum of the South African Rugby Union situated at the V&A Waterfront, one of Cape Town’s biggest tourist attraction. The full squad and management paid a visit to the Experience where Neil Powell, Coach of the Springbok Sevens team presented a Commonwealth Games jersey to SARU CEO Jurie Roux, where it will be on display in the museum.

HOMELAND FILMING IN CAPE TOWN Cape Town is playing host to the fourth season of the highly successful TV drama, Homeland which begins screening in America on 5 October.
HOME & LIVING Page 10
This multiple Emmy-winning sensation started filming during mid-June at various locations in Cape Town. Narrow streets and city buildings in Cape Town was transformed into Islamabad, Kabul and Washington DC. Michael Klick, Co-Executive Producer of Homeland says, “There are a few places we could have shot, but for a variety of reasons primarily political, economic and climatic, it didn’t work out.” Because the filming is not done in the Middle East, each location has to be dressed to be a true and honest reflection of the Pakistani capital and everything was created from scratch. About $100 000 alone was spend on the cars that had to be modified to look like cars used in Pakistan.

Springbok Sevens Team Celebrate
OUR INFORMATION
Springbok Experience First Birthday (continue from page 1) The sevens squad participated in several interaction games with the public where fans received autographs from their favorite players. Kyle Brown’s Springbok Sevens team is one of the world’s most popular and successful Sevens rugby teams. Last season the team finished second on the HSBC Sevens World Series log after appearing in five consecutive tournament finals and winning two titles, in Port Elizabeth and Las Vegas. In July they won international acclaim from rugby supporters across the globe by winning the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. They finished the tournament unbeaten after six matches and defeated their biggest rival, New Zealand, in a pulsating final in front of 70 000 fans at the Ibrox Stadium. Since the opening of the Springbok Experience, nearly 40 000 visitors had an opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the most iconic names in South African history as they meandered their way through the Experience. Like their heroes, a significant number has tried their hand at outsmarting and beating each other in Springbok Sevens Player - Frankie Horne playing the Hands-off Challenge. This game, one of the most popular in the interactive game section, called the Springbok Trials Zone, has stumped many a competitor even some Springboks! This particular game, which demonstrated the need for sharp and highly developed reflexes, underline the high standards required of players on the national level. Beyond the fun and games offered at the museum, the Springbok Experience given its unique place in South African’s sport history and local cultural - heritage industry and special atmosphere, over the course of its first year has served as the flagship platform and space for the launch and hosting of major corporate events. Notable amongst these were the send-off ceremony for the Queen’s Baton, the torch that travelled the Commonwealth prior to the opening of the Commonwealth Games. Similarly, the William Webb Ellis or Rugby World Cup Trophy visited the Experience in August on its tour throughout the world en route to the next tournament in 2015. Logically, these events and the artefacts complementing them saw the facility being visited by some of the most high profile names in the athletics and rugby world.

Calendar with a Difference for Charity
Along with professional photographer, CM Muller from Muller Photography, Eunice Visagie has taken on the project of creating a special edition calendar to raise funds for a charity. Various sportsmen from across various sporting codes gave their time for the 2015 calendar that will be printed to raise funds for the Ithemba Foundation. The sportsmen include captain of the Springbok Sevens rugby team, Kyle Brown, gold medal winner with the Sevens at the Commonwealth Games Chris Dry, national hockey players Wade Paton and Dylan Swanepoel, and professional triathlete Bradley Weiss. The Ithemba Foundation is a non-profit entity (2012/171250/08) with the public benefit goals of raising awareness of depression as a biological illness, and raising funds for research on depression.
The Experience has also become the base for the announcement and send-off of national teams such as the Junior Springboks, South African Women’s and Commonwealth Sevens teams. An important initiative such as the launch of SA Rugby Travel, the company who handles the sale of travel packages to the 2015 Rugby World Cup on behalf of South African rugby, was also announced from Portswood Ridge. The Springbok Experience is open every day of the week from 10h00 – 18h00 (except Christmas Day). For more information call 021 418 4741 or visit www.sarugby.co.za
Homeland Filming in Cape Town (continue from page 1)
If depression is the illness of despair, then we need to constantly focus on HOPE (Ithemba means hope in isiXhosa). Every individual can be an agent of HOPE by talking openly about depression to break the silence and the stigma around this biological illness which can become fatal. Funds are needed to print the calendar. If you would like to sponsor a month in the calendar, see details below. For more information contact eunicevisagie@gmail.com

Rupert Friend, playing the role of Peter Quinn in the series sums up his time in Cape Town, “It is beautiful sunny days, the seas are blue and it is like a postcard.” Actor, Mandy Patinkin who plays the role of Saul Berenson says, “Our experience here are off the charts. I went on a Safari. I never thought I would do that in my life.” The story line of Season 4 centres mostly around CIA case officer Carrie Mathison, played by Claire Danes, moving back to the Middle East to take up the rather dangerous position of station chief and continue her frantic fight against terrorism. Is Brody Back? The third series of Homeland ended with Nicholas Brody being executed. According to Mail Online British actor Damian Lewis, playing the part of Brody was recently spotted on the set of acclaimed TV show Homeland in Cape Town. We’ll have to wait and see! A special behind-the-scenes video was released by Variety, the creators of the popular show to reveal just how they managed to turn Cape Town, not only to resemble Islamabad, but Kabul and Washington DC as well.

Van Ryn’s Charentaise Collection - Nederburg Auction The House of Van Ryn’s has produced a once-off Collection of meticulouslyblended 10-year-old potstill brandy for the Nederburg Charity Auction, intended as a timeless expression of original brandy craft. This showpiece item was created from six unique single vintage potstill brandies and distilled using the traditional Charentaise method – meaning that it was produced in an original copper potstill from the Cognac region in France. The Van Ryn’s Master Distiller Marlene Bester was charged with combining the six individual brandies to create one master blend. The Collection is presented in a crystal decanter which resembles the shape of the Van Ryn’s potstill and is displayed in bespoke leather and wooden case, containing a hand-bound leather journal with a note from Bester detailing the tasting notes of the components and the master blend. A Mont Blanc pen, a brand renowned for its timeless writing instruments, accompanies the notebook. “The pen is a personal invitation for the owner to create their own signature blend, detailing their blending notes along with those of the Master Distiller’s,” Snyman said. The annual Nederburg Charity Auction was conducted at the conclusion of the main auction on Saturday, September 13, to raise funds for The Breytenbach Centre in Wellington and the Hope Through Action project, by auctioning unusual wine items, many with a high collectable status.
New Aquaponic Research Facility Opens A research and training facility where Matie postgraduate students and the public can learn how to farm vegetables with fish, thanks to the latest application of aquaponics techniques, opened on 26 September at Stellenbosch University (SU). All produce will go to the Stellenbosch Feeding Action (SFIA). The facility contains, among others, four 2800 litre fish tanks and 44 growth beds. It has been established at the Division of Aquaculture at the Welgevallen Experimental Farm. The intention is for master students to do their practicals and conduct research into aquaponics, a sustainable system of food production whereby fish and vegetables are farmed together. Furthermore, workshops will also be held for the public, while a certificate course of a year is also being planned.
The reserve price for Van Ryn’s Charentaise once-off Collection was R25 000 and sold to Peter and Nico Pitsiladi, Eastern Cape liquor merchants who bought the Collection for R25 000.
Classic Styles that last! Lizbit Blommaert, owner of Address What 2 Wear in Stellenbosch never for a moment thought of owning her own clothing store one day. Lizbit told The Newspaper that the business was established in March 1999. She graduated as a teacher, managed a guest house, and for 6 years prior to purchasing this business, she operated a coffee shop. Address What 2 Wear was a shoe store when she bought the business. After time the shop expanded and she obtained more brands such as Pringle, Sirocco and Yarra Trail. Today she has a very large Australian range which covers about 60% of all brands in the shop. She also offers a few Canadian brands, including shoes and handbags imported from Italy. After 15 years in the clothing industry the business grew from strength to strength. Shirley September was employed at the time the business opened, and is an active employee for the best part of sixteen years. Angie, another employee, has been with the company for the past 7 years. Presently the company client list include about 10,000 – 15 000 customers from all over the country including Upington, Namibia, Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Cape Town to purchase their favourite clothes. Address What 2 Wear offer an excellent customer service to their clients. They provide garments on loan to clients for up to 3 days - to fit in the privacy of their own home. Most of her customers became friends and occasionally visit for a chat. There are even men who buy garments for their wives, as they are too busy to select the garments themselves.
According to Henk Stander, general manager of the Division of Aquaculture at the SU Department of Animal Sciences, an exchange student from the University of Ghent in Belgium will be the first postgraduate student to use the facility in 2015. His masters degree studies will focus on identifying appropriate plant varieties for use in aquaponic facilities. The establishment of this facility has been made possible thanks to Japie Muller, who has a particular passion for aquaponic farming. Muller decided to donate a part of the inheritance received from his father to the benefit of research at SU as well as the Stellenbosch Feeding Action. The SFIA, under the project management of Muller’s sister, Liesel Koen, was established in 1994 with a single point of delivery to feed a few people; today it delivers almost 12 000 plates of food to 4 000 people in the Stellenbosch area, in an attempt to combat hunger in the Stellenbosch community. The next workshops will be offered on 17 October and 24 October.
High Tea @ The Summervale Throughout Lizbit’s business dealings with clients she strives to provide the best in quality products. She would rather suggest that a client purchase 3 quality items during a season, rather than 10 items that does not last as long. Address What 2 Wear also offer a pick-up-and-go service to clients. The customers collect the garments that Lizbit selects on their behalf. She is able to provide classic styles and service customers between the ages of 20 and 80 years. Radio Helderberg 93.6 FM, favourite community radio station in the Hederberg loves to put a smile on the face of their listeners! They recently hosted a lavish High Tea at The Summervale Retirement Village in Somerset West. Tommy Dell entertained the guests, whilst they enjoyed delicious scones and other delectable treats. In sync with mobile technology
Mobile technology is driving the home and office automation market by making it affordable and accessible to the average Jo Soap - that’s you and me. Once an exclusive offering to the mega wealthy, automated mobile services, already a huge market overseas, are on the verge of exploding in South Africa. Think Snap Scan but on steroids.
Wesgro, the official Tourism, Trade and Investment Promotion agency for Cape Town and the Western Cape, lead a delegation of close to twenty companies to exhibit under the South African banner at the twentieth edition of the 100% Design trade event held in London 17-20 September 2014. The visitors included architects, interior designers and retailers. The 100% Design Show is officially the United Kingdom’s largest design trade event making it the biggest event during the London Design Festival. It is an event that gives designers from around the world an opportunity to network and rub shoulders with international buyers. “This mission forms part of a joint venture between Wesgro, The Western Cape Furniture Initiative, and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and with more than 10 000 interior designers, 2 119 retailers, an average lead count of 223 leads per exhibitor and 2 500 media in attendance, this is the perfect platform for our designers to showcase their work,” says Nadine Smith-Clarke, Export Development Manager at Wesgro.
“In the not so distant future everything will be linked to your phone - your alarm system, your light switches, your payroll and your coffee machine that knows exactly how and when you’d like your daily shot,” says Riaan Swart, MD and founder of Solv, an IT concierge company based in Cape Town. The figures speak for themselves with Grand View Research anticipating the global smart home market to reach $47.61-billion in value by 2020. “South Africa is a bit behind with smart technology, however there is no doubt that we’re following the global trend,” Swart says. Swart’s background is in IT retail. He is founder of Chaos Computers, ran seven retail stores across the Western Cape and managed a turnover of R67-million and opened Solv, an IT concierge company earlier this year. Sensing a shift in the market and identifying a new business opportunity, Solv is aimed at providing IT services, including on and off site repairs, remote desktop support,

data security and tech audits to small businesses and homeowners. “In the fast-paced, high energy, technology must work world that we live in, we will become increasingly dependent on our phones as a multi-management platform; your wallet, GPS and on/ off button in one unit. It makes sense to have everything available on one device. The cost effectiveness of mobile technology has opened so many doors; we’re only just touching the tip of the iceberg. Exciting times lie ahead and we’re looking forward to being at the forefront of the trend,” he says.
Are you a Newbie, a Native or a Networker?
The question most asked? Where do I begin? This leads to a whole battery of questions you first have to answer: The South African pavilion was designed by Aidan Bennetts Design and featured beautifully crafted items from leading South African designers with the likes of; Pierre Cronje, Meyer Von Wielligh, Martin Doller, and Mervyn Gers to name just a few. The designs ranged from stunningly crafted contemporary pieces of furniture to elegant chandeliers and porcelain dinner sets, sure to have attendees spell bound. “The calibre of furniture designs that are currently coming out of South Africa is truly exceptional and speaks to our beautiful culture and heritage as a country,” says Bernadette Isaacs from the Western Cape Furniture Initiative. Rose wine can easily be described as the official trendiest wine of summer. Stylish European’s are never far from a glass of crisp rose during hotter days, sipping it while overlooking the Mediterranean or during long lazy lunches in St. Tropez. Holden Manz Wine Estate in Franschhoek is upholding this trend in South Africa with their 2014 Rose. Made in Province style the Holden Manz Rose is completely dry with a pale salmon colour and made with all four red grape varietals, which are grown on the estate farm (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Franc). The subtle nuances of fresh strawberries and cherries makes this the perfect easy drinking wine for summer. The palate reflects the flavours of the strawberries and dark cherries, which follow through from the nose. The acidity and fruit is well balanced, leading to a fresh, lively, crisp and dry finish on the palate. The Holden Manz Rose is a great wine to serve to guests, enjoyed on it’s own as a summer aperitif or paired with delicate fish dishes, such as salmon, as well as poultry dishes. Sip on the crisp summer wine whilst meandering through the Holden Manz vineyards in Franschhoek, before finding a spot to enjoy a gourmet picnic. The picnics are prepared by the estate restaurant, Franschhoek Kitchen, and are brimming with fresh local produce - the perfect city-escape during the hot Cape Town days. ART
THE NEWSPAPER
Artist’s presence revealed in the Artwork The Newspaper recently discovered the talent of Christell de Wet, a creative and highly energetic artist. To her, art is the ability to take a flamboyant lead, to step away from popularity, to establish her true character in her artwork, and to become the artwork in itself.
She states, “I was constantly analyzing my individual existence and plight in an unfathomable universe and realized I must assume ultimate responsibility.” Existentialism to her is very difficult to define, but it embodies the spirit or aura of how one responds to human existence. It is a conscious shaping of one’s own existence. “I found it intuitively obvious that I must create my own value. Affirm it. Live it,” she says. CONCEPTUAL ART To Christell today’s ardent art follower is used to conceptual art where the concept motivates the art, and where the concept becomes more favourable than the traditional esthetical and material considerations of former art. It is for this reason that she embarks on the present era of conceptual art and grows a new branch concerned with instant acquisition of fame.
Christell’s artistic scope is the driving force from within. She is the subject and muse of her fierce campaign, understanding the power of a visual presence able to promote herself as the art embodied within the artwork. She is able to self-construct her identity and make herself more visible in her art, becoming the pin-up in the Artwork. Her signature, pinstripe stockings, a carefully considered strategy, reflects her own distinct image as an artistic business which is inseparable from her art, the result of which is self publicity. In her own words she states, "I started off as a student of art, and wish to finish as a business artist.” To her, being a celebrated artist is the most fascinating portfolio any artist can ever dream off.
Dali recorded, “If I act like a genius I will become a genius.” In the same manner that Dali decided to further his reputation by dressing up for the public eye in order to gain attention, in the same way does Christell draw the public eye through her artistic ability to dress up, and view herself transmigrated into her artwork. In the same manner that journalists hungrily fed on each morsel of news Dali produced, so will journalist hungrily feed on the brilliance of Christell’s presentation of conceptual art charming the public and art literati with flamboyant happenings procured around her.
One need to follow Christell’s train of thoughts, and take note of her strong academic foundation. Studying at the Vaal Triangle Technicon she first obtained her National Diploma in Fine Arts, where after she obtained her Baccalaureus Degree, and lectured in various workshops at the Vaal Triangle Technicon.
In her drive to increase the public’s awareness, Christell employs performance art, photographic advertisement, a signature logo, animation, art, and fellow artists’ involvement in becoming the subject of their close study, thereby translating herself into the art spotlight.
Christell’s first solo exhibition of large format paintings of the human body in 2000 dealt with psycho-analysis of art. In 2002 she was approached by Keith Anderson to assist with the ICC 2002 Cricket World Cup Tournament’s opening ceremony at Newlands, Cape Town.
Christell reveals that during her research for dissertation, “Psychology and the Artist” she also came across the phenomenon of Salvador Dali whose favorite topic of discussion was - How to become a genius.
Artwork by - Richard Scott
Christell and Keith worked in close collaboration to design and make the props for the opening ceremony. This Olympic-styled ceremony was viewed globally by almost 1.4 billion people. PSYCHO-ANALYSIS OF ART Christell refers to a quote by Deurzen recorded in 1984 which had a direct impact on her mind. He stated, ‘If man, as the existentialist conceives him, is indefinable, it is because at first he is nothing. Only afterward will he be something, and he himself will have made what he will be.’ She reveals that it was only during her preparations for her first solo exhibition which dealt with psycho-analysis of art, where the body served as a structural point of departure for suppressed desires and images with their origin in the subconscious mind, that she kept on being plagued by the classical existentialism questions. Artwork by - Marieke Prinsloo
She channels conceptual art into the notion that in the aim to fame the idea remains important, yet, the artists with whom she collaborates are even more important. She believes the media’s attention will be drawn by the important names involved in her concept. Therefore, to Christell, this is the only way she is able to immortalize herself. She says, “Being recognized not only within the art exhibition itself but outside as well, challenges the conventions. I am creating, and defining the self I am, which a public self is.” Christell is orchestrating a movement whereby the highly academically motivated artist can consciously elevate himself with a strategic plan of action. To her every artist must use the elements of conceptual art to his advantage, and create happenings concerning himself. The core of conceptual art is that the concept is more important than the artwork. Christell says, “What I will be in some final sense is what I make of myself. My acts are not trivial, they define my self-hood. People want to have recognition in one another's lives, but ultimately I have come to realize that I cannot depend on others for validation. With that realization I finally understood that validation must come from within and not from others.” For more information contact Christell de Wet on christell@shoppingcentredesign.com or visit www.christelldewet.co.za

Jakkalsvlei - The Garden Route's Best Kept Secret
Jakkalsvlei Private Cellar is a family owned Wine Estate situated on the R327, 8km from Herbertsdale, and 50km from Mossel Bay on the beautiful Garden Route. The Jonker family has been proud owners of Jakkalsvlei since 1972. The Newspaper recently paid winemaker, Jantjie, a 3rd generation Jonker, a visit.
You can’t help, but fall in love with the breathtaking views and the beautiful mountain range surrounding the farm. The farmland was called Jakkalsvlei after all the foxes, jackal’s, and wild cats were seen in the mountains. While hunting in the Southern Cape, Nelis Jonker senior was inspired to buy this beautiful land.
Cultivars
Pinotage - Coffee Edition: Oak-matured Pinotage with dark berry fruit & roasted coffee bean flavours and a smoky, spicy palate. Smooth tannins ensure a fruit-driven lingering aftertaste. Cabernet Sauvignon: Medium bodied with a lovely dark red colour. Rich plum & blackberry aromas, complemented by oak and soft with firm tannins. Mount Cuvée - Pinotage/Merlot: The best blend from the cellar with mouth filling fruit flavours. La Perlé Rosé - Pinotage/Red Muscadel: Fragrant, Playful, Fresh & Fun. A refreshing wine with strawberry & plum fruit flavours. Served lightly chilled. Sauvignon Blanc: Aromas of tropical fruit. Crisp, fresh, & lively on the palate, with a vibrant tropical grapefruit nose. Long lasting finish. River Cuvée - Chenin Blanc/Sauvignon Blanc: On the nose and palate this wine shows refreshing flavours of lime citrus, mango with a hint of floral tones. These flavour flows through on to a lusciously palate which ends with a lingering crispness.
History Jantjie grew up in the Herbertsdale area. His grandfather, originally from Bonnievale, sold his farms in 1959, and bought the farm in 1960. He started off by planting peaches and apricots as well as vineyards. The peaches and apricots he dispatched to Mossel Bay. He then built his own winery and made his own wine and sold it to the local market. Since 1960 the Jonker-family is still the only farmers in the area that have vineyards. In 1980 Jantjie’s father broke away from his grandfather, planted his own vineyards, and established his own winery.
Jantjie Jonker Even thou his father’s winemaking portfolio was the smallest of 5 enterprises, Jantjie told his father, “I wish to establish my own label, and add value to my products. I have no desire to farm vineyard and produce bulk wines. I wish to establish my own brand.” Jantjie recalls California as one of the best times in his life. He believes that the winemakers of the Napa Valley are way ahead of the Wine Industry in the World. During his time in California he worked a winery, called Chappellette, the second oldest winery in the Napa Valley. They produce both red and white wines with Cabernet as signature wine. “I learned quite a lot about vineyards, the making of wine, the marketing of a region, and how the people stand together.” After returning from Napa Valley in 2006 Jantjie embarked on establishing a wine estate at Jakkalsvlei. He planted various cultivars. At the end of 2008 he produced his first bottle of wine under the Jakkalsvlei label. Today Jakkalsvlei has 34 hectares under vines. The vineyards are situated 40km from the Indian Ocean at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains. The combination of the southern and northern slopes of these mountains allow for the cultivation of quality grapes.
SA Champion - Hanepoot/Muscat de Alexandria: Made from full-ripe selected Hanepoot grapes. Soft on the tongue with a lingering Hanepoot character, fruity finish and well rounded. SA Champion Red Muscadel: A full-bodied dessert wine, deep ruby in colour, with sweet rich red fruit & sun-ripened raisin flavours with a soft aftertaste. First Pomegranate Farm in South Africa The Van der Merwe brothers from Merwespont, Bonnievale, a fruit and wine farm established in 1883 in the Breede River Valley, are the proud owners of Pont Juice, also known as the Passionate Pomegranate Company. They were the first farmers to grow Pomegranates commercially in South Africa.

It can be used with Greek yogurt, in fresh fruit salads, over leafy Greek salads or cold meat cuts. Ruby splash – A light pomegranate reduction – no sugar added. Drizzle over leafy salads, fresh fruit salad or roasted vegetables. Use as a marinade with garlic and fresh herbs in meat dishes or pan sauces. It can be used in vinaigrettes, winebased gravies and cocktails. Mix with crushed garlic and olive oil it can be used as dipping sauce with freshly baked bread. Ruby syrup – Grenadine available in plain, rose or chilli flavour – sugar added. Enjoy as a healthy treat with Greek yogurt and cashew nuts or muesli. The fruity syrup can be drizzled over fresh fruit salad, ice cream or waffles. It adds an interesting slant to a salad of rocket, baby spinach, blue cheese and garlic croutons. Enjoy over French toast or waffles. Did you know that Pomegranates are the number 1 Superfood and has more anti-oxidants than any other known food/fruit on Earth?
HISTORY Agricultural pioneers Jan, Willem, and Hugo Van der Merwe imported the first pomegranate plants from Israel in 2003. Thirteen thousand pomegranate trees were planted and a nursery established. Their main focus was to export the fruit, and provide seedlings to other farmers. In 2006 they harvested their first pomegranates, a small crop as many of the fruit burst open. Hugo decided to make juice of these pomegranates. Having travelled the Middle East, and having tasted fresh Pomegranate juice sold by vendors on the streets, the brothers decided to produce the first 100% pure Pomegranate Juice in South Africa. The Van der Merwe’s experimented with the juice to create a healthy, superior tasting Pomegranate juice. In February 2011 Pont Juice commenced trading as the Passionate Pomegranate Company. The fruit is harvested manually from early March to end of April. The first grade fruit is reserved for the fresh market, export and retail purposes. The second grade fruit is sold to a company that packs and markets the fresh arils (pomegranate pips) in plastic containers. The third grade is washed and sterilized before entering the factory. Once inside, it is cut open and the bright red arils are separated from the skin and pith by hand before being placed in the press. From the press the juice is pumped into a stainless steel cooler. The juice of several sweet and tart pomegranate varieties are mixed to acquire a pleasing juice combination.
NUTRITIONAL VALUE AND HEALTH BENEFITS Pomegranate Juice is an exceptional source of vitamin A, C and E with minerals such as calcium, phosphorous, potassium, iron, folic acid, niacin, thiamine, folates, and riboflavin. Pomegranate has been used for medicinal purposes in the Middle and Far East regions for thousands of years. Pure Pomegranate juice has disinfectant and antiseptic properties. It contains antioxidants like anthocyanin and ellagic acid, and punicic acid, an omega 5 polyunsaturated fatty acid, and flavonoids like quercetin. Antioxidants are molecules that protect the body from the harm done by free radicals. Pomegranates also contain estron - a natural oestrogen which is also produced by the human body. Heart – It keeps the arteries flexible, it decreases inflammation in the lining of the blood vessels, and known to reduce atherosclerosis. It helps to raise the levels of “good” (HDL) cholesterol, reducing “bad” cholesterol (LDL). Consult with a medical practitioner when using anti-cholesterol or blood pressure medication. Maintains Blood Sugar Levels – Although pomegranate juice contains fructose, it does not elevate the blood sugar levels as other fruit juices do. Diabetics should consult a medical practitioner before use. Protection From Cancer – It eliminates free radicals from the body and inhibits the growth and development of cancer and other diseases. Pomegranate contains the fatty acid CLA, a powerful anti-cancer agent. Soothes the Stomach – It is used in the treatment of diarrhoea and dysentery as it plays a vital role in the secretion of enzymes which aids proper digestion.
PRODUCTS - Handmade & farm fresh In 2011 Jan and his wife, Maretha decided to expand to pomegranate syrup, reductions and preserves. Maretha perfected the products and experimented with it in various recipes. Several restaurants and acclaimed chefs have since started to use these products in their kitchens. Fruity and Robust Pont Juice - 100% pure Pomegranate – healthy, delicious and all-natural. It is unpasteurized, not made from concentrate nor diluted with water. Neither are any other fruit juice nor juice concentrates added. As it is unfiltered, the sediment adds to its character and flavour. No preservatives or additives are added. The juice is sold frozen and must be kept frozen until thawed to drink. Once thawed, it must be kept refrigerated and be consumed within 5 days. It is available in 235ml &1 litre bottles. Preserves – available in Pomegranate (plain), Pomegranate with Rose and Pomegranate with Chilli – sugar added. The plain Pomegranate preserve, and the Pomegranate with Rose pairs well with Vanilla ice cream, scones with cream or waffles with ice cream. For a decadent breakfast, drizzle over layers of French toast, Camembert wedges and crisp bacon. The Pomegranate preserve with Chilli (a mild, sweet chilli), pairs well with cheese platters, soft cheese moulds, chocolate mouse or chocolate ice cream.
Boosts Immunity – It has strong anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties which help fight viruses and bacteria and boost the immunity system. Prevents Anaemia – A condition caused by the deficiency of red blood cells in the body. Anti-Aging Benefits – It help to slow down the process of ageing by reducing wrinkles and fine lines caused by constant exposure to sun. Razvan and Pete back in the kitchen
Making the point that it's the sauce rather than the central protein of the dish that should determine the choice of wine, they show how to make several basic, but foundational sauces to transform ordinary meals into masterpieces, and then what's needed to vary them. With just a few extra ingredients, they transform these staples, creating new tastes that call for different wines.
Razvan Macici and Pete Goffe-Wood share a passion for taste: Razvan for wine and Pete for food. To mark the third season in the popular MasterChef South Africa series, the two have teamed up to trade their secrets in matching wine and food, with three short, fun-to-watch videos to inspire chefs at home. Razvan is the cellar-master of Nederburg, the official wine sponsor of the food show, while Pete is one of three judges who will determine South Africa's MasterChef, to be announced at the end of the season's run in mid-December.
In the first video a white sauce that's good for mac-and-cheese is paired with Nederburg's Winemaster's Reserve Chardonnay. In another video, they make a Hollandaise sauce for eggs Benedict, downed with a glass of Riesling. In a third video, they make a red wine sauce. In one version they add prunes and a bit of rum, to enjoy with steak and Merlot; in another, they add chilli and chocolate, also served with steak, but this time with Pinotage. MasterChef South Africa is broadcast weekly by M-Net on Thursdays at 19h30 until December 18.

Sleeping in the Comfort of Down
Why waste thousands on mass produced products every few years when you can save money by purchasing homesewn, higher quality, and everlasting products. The Newspaper was greatly inspired by the high quality of Duvets, Pillows and Sleeping bags manufactured by Hex Valley Down.
Down is also very scarce in comparison to feathers and therefore more valuable and comes at a much higher price.
To ensure a safe sleeping environment, the filling is thoroughly washed, sterilized and treated for allergies after harvesting.
What sets Hex Valley Down apart? A quality pillow or duvet is determined by the quality of the filling. Selling products filled purely with the very valuable and costly goose down drastically reduces the market size. To create a larger market and ensure come-back sales when old products need to be replaced, mass producers resort to refining feathers with machines - in essence “changing” feathers to down. As soon as one changes their original structure, the quality is compromised. In this process the hard shaft of the feather is chopped into soft, fluffy bits and often cleverly marketed as “Super Down”.
How did the Hex Valley Down come about? Established as a business formally in 1991 by Christine Jordaan, the seed was actually planted many decades ago by her great gran who endeavored to make pillows and duvets for the family. Her daughter was to follow in her footsteps breeding geese of her own on their Namibian farm exposing Chistine to this craft where she gained the interest and expertise that would one day prove so valuable. Many years later, Christine married a farmer and moved to the beautiful Hex Valley. Used to a farm swarming with animals, she decided that geese would be the easiest livelihood to manage. Gathering down and feathers was already a familiar task and, along with running a busy household, she ensured each member had his/her own duvet, pillow and sleeping bag. Word of their household luxury spread quickly and before long Christine had her hands full trying to supply the Hex Valley community. A few years down the line and valuable contacts made, she was persuaded to share a stand at the Bloemfontein Agricultural Show to test how well her products would be received by the general public.
In theory this is a brilliant idea but these refined feathers slowly disintegrate and the consequences experienced are 3 fold: Disintegrating feathers give off a very fine powdery dust which escapes through the product casing causing you to sleep with your face buried in dust which has obvious implications for allergy and sinus irritations. The filaments falling off the broken shaft pieces eventually cause the whole manmade down cluster network to collapse and become lumpy. Pillows lose their original form and fall flat after two to five years of use and refuse to be fluffed up again. Finally, ‘I have stopped counting the number of times I have heard people complain, “Our duvet just doesn’t seem to be as warm as it used to be!”’ says Annemien. Collapsing, broken feathers lose their initial ability to capture body heat, the filling becomes lumpy, it shifts to the sides of its compartment and you end up with fabric on fabric areas across your duvet. In these areas your body heat escapes through the duvet and you inevitably wake up shivering. Hex Valley Down only works with two qualities, as it comes off the geese and thoroughly cleansed: A mixture of whole, unrefined goose down and feathers for their range of feather pillows and whole, unrefined goose down which is used to fill their duvets and sleeping bags.
This first show prompted two more, and finally, she decided to invest in her own stand. Suddenly this hobby-became-business was starting to burst at the seams, necessitating the need to move from home to a small factory and employing help through the talented hands of Sassa, Johanna, Beatie and Charlotte from the local community.
Their uncompromising choice in filling might mean a smaller market but through this they can guarantee quality products that they are passionate about, that maintain their structure for many more years than cheaper imitations.
The most exciting addition to the business was when Christine’s only daughter, Annemien, joined the company. Her energetic and joyful approach to life has added greatly to the business which she now co-manages.

Harvesting Goose Down and - Feathers
Duvets - Hex Valley Down supplies 3 main seasons of goose down duvets of various standard and custom sizes, encased in a 100% pure cotton percale down proof fabric.
Driven by integrity and high esteem for their feathery friends, Hex Valley Down strictly follows a safe and bird friendly procedure when harvesting down and feathers once geese naturally starts moulting. What most don’t realize is that goose down and -feathers are actually not the same! Feathers, forming the top layer, have a much stronger structure and consist of a harder shaft and adjoining filaments. Due to this characteristic, goose feathers can carry the weight of a person’s head and provide proper neck support. Down, underneath the feathers, has a soft centre and finer filaments and has the ability to puff out and connect with the surrounding clusters to create a network that retains and regulates one’s body heat.
Pillows - Hex Valley Down offers a wide range of pillows in various sizes, either filled with pure down or a mixture of down and feathers. Sleeping Bag - All sleeping bags are filled with pure down for superior insulation, encased in pertex or pertex-and-cotton combination fabric, either in the mummy or rectangular shape.
Rejuvenating old Products
Hex Valley Down receives old products of various brands from all over South Africa. Mostly what this service entails is to remove the filling from the worn out casing, wash and treat it for allergies and then make a brand new product of your choice. Westvaal - A Family Owned Business Westvaal Holdings is a family owned business operating from Nelspruit who owns and manages approximately 25 dealerships nationwide of which 19 are General Motors (GM) passenger and light delivery vehicle dealerships, 4 truck dealerships, and two Volkswagen dealerships. In September 2012 Westvaal Stellenbosch opened its doors as a boutique new car sale dealership linked to their Somerset West branch. They sold new cars as well as the odd trade-in vehicle which they received when selling a new car.
The New Showrooms Westvaal Stellenbosch commenced with the upgrade of their showrooms in June 2014, and completed during the first week of July. August became the first fully operational month with the service centre becoming busier by the day. The advantage of the new showroom is that they are able to carry more stock which helps in selling more vehicles within a faster turnaround period. Sales have doubled since the completion of the new showrooms. Westvaal Stellenbosch developed a proper, neat, professional dealership. Competitors recently visited them and were pleasantly surprised at what they offer prospective clients. They only received good feedback and responses from the public.
During the beginning of 2014 the dealership decided to expand, and with the approval of GM South Africa developed a fully-fledged dealership with a new vehicle, a used vehicle, a parts department, as well as a workshop/service centre. From a small minor dealership, according to Motor Industry Standard, Westvaal Stellenbosch is presently recognized as a medium dealership. The Westvaal vision and mission is all about making their client’s experience an unforgettable one. As part of the GM Group, Westvaal carry a wide variety of new Chevrolet, Opel, Isuzu and used vehicles. They provide service options as well as vehicle finance, and believe that any client will find a deal that suits them.
Workshop The workshop covers an area of almost 1000m². It accommodates six vehicle lifts and can at any given time service six vehicles which means that they can service at least 10-20 vehicles a day. Westvaal Stellenbosch can now offer services, not only to GM warrantee vehicle owners, but also to business fleet owners at fleet rates, and those who are owners of vehicles older than six years, be it GM products or not, at a special discounted labour rate.
Staff Stephen Nelson, the newly appointed Dealer Principal at Westvaal Stellenbosch, has been involved with motor vehicle, motor financing, and motor sales for almost 14 years. He started off in a fleet management environment, thereafter managed a network of used vehicle outlets in the country, later became Sales Manager in Somerset West, and was recently appointed to head up the dealership in Stellenbosch. His goal is to exceed the national set target of GM percentage shareholding and to become recognized as a dealership of choice where customers can experience the type of service that he thinks they deserve.
Westvaal on the R44 Heinrich Prinsloo, Director of the Westvaal Group, identified the present position as being the best location in securing their business and the GM Brand alongside the seven main stream car dealerships in Stellenbosch. As a businessman he recognized the positive impact the R44 will have on Westvaal Stellenbosch with regard to continuous branding and prospective sales. For the past 4 to 5 years the GM Brand did not really have any presence in Stellenbosch, specifically when it came to the servicing of vehicles and customers in Stellenbosch took their vehicles either to Paarl, Kuils River, or Somerset West.
The compliment of 16 staff members include the likes of a New Car Sales Manager with 3 salesmen, a Used Car Sales Manager and Salesman, a Finance and Insurance Consultant, a Workshop Manager with 2 Technicians, a Parts Manager with a Salesman, a Workshop Service Advisor and a driver. The staff are committed in providing professional and friendly service to clients. As the proverb states, “The proof lies in the pudding.” New and existing customers are invited to join them for coffee, visit the dealership, meet the staff, bring their vehicles for a service, experience the quality in service, get a quote on a new or used vehicle, and compare pricing to other dealerships. EDUCATION
THE NEWSPAPER
Winelands hotel school wins with avos Students from the Private Hotel School in Stellenbosch recently trumped several other chef and hotel schools in the country with their range of innovative recipes using avocado as main ingredient. The competition, the initiative of the South African Avocado Growers Association, aimed to increase awareness of the multiple uses of this versatile fruit by challenging upcoming chefs to think outside the box concerning the use of avocado. Participating cooking schools nationwide received avos with which they had to experiment. They were then required to submit their recipes, accompanied by full colour photographs of the completed dishes as well as pics of the students having fun creating the dishes on their avo day. Friends and fans were encouraged to vote online for the school with the most appetising looking recipes. “We were really impressed with the creativity of the recipes this year,” says Derek Donkin, SAAGA CEO. “Avocados were brought out of their traditional culinary roles and used in wonderfully different ways, perfectly illustrating their versatility. The recipes show the public just how easy it is to incorporate avos into everyday dishes.” The Private Hotel School, who had to compete with the likes of the 1000 Hills Hotel School, Capital Hotel School, Capsicum Culinary studio in PE and Chez Gourmet, received R10 000 in prize money, while lecturer Chef Matt Vigario received R5 000 and a further R10 0000 was shared amongst the students.
“We loved the contest,” says Chef Vigario. “It really challenged the students to think outside the box while exploring all the gastronomic possibilities that avos have to offer. They are certainly not just for salads and wraps.” Some of the recipes that wowed the judges included eggs benedict with an avocado English muffin, avo stuffed risotto balls and decadent desserts such as avo ice cream and Swiss meringue stuffed with avo buttercream.

INSPIRING GARDEN IDEAS AT ASPIDISTRA GARDEN Centre It's summer and a time to spend outdoor in your garden and get creative with inspiring ideas from Willie Schmidt of ASPIDISTRA Garden Centre.
compose out of brokenness the beauty through the art of gardening. I motivate within every client the desire to actively engage in gardening.”
The Newspaper recently paid Willie, owner of ASPIDISTRA Garden Centre en route to Stellenbosch, a visit. Willie has a great love and passion for gardening.
From a psychological viewpoint the comparison between the human element and plants hold great truths. Willie never talks to his plants, yet he motivates his clients. “If a plant does not grow, give it food. If the plant has no desire to respond to the food, make compost with it.” When viewing any object Willie points out, “Do not see a glass for what it is designed to be, but rather, the potential in what can be done with it, even if broken.” Willie’s gardening innovation with its hidden psychological advantages have taken centre stage. He has been interviewed by many TV Producers and featured in several media publications and TV Broadcasts over the years. He is involved in the SABC TV 3 production Expresso, the SABC TV 2 production Pasella, and KykNet’s Tuine en Tossels.
Show Chickens
His creativeness is visibly displayed throughout the beautiful ASPIDISTRA garden. He says, “I cannot absorb, nor draw enough from the elements of nature through gardening, it is a passion I live for, and gives me great joy.” Willie Schmidt is the mastermind behind the beauty of the nursery. Every single time The Newspaper paid Willie a visit, we discovered new things. His style is eclectic and he works with a lot of rusty, throw-away objects sourced from all over. This incredibly gifted creative landscape designer's talent masterfully executed using everyday toss away items can be viewed daily as he frequently makes changes covering every little turn, nook, and cranny, the wonder of his imagination. This is not your average nursery!
Another great love of Willie is his Show Chickens. He is actively engaged in six shows per year, exhibiting 15 different breeds. The most popular of his show chickens is the Orpington breed.
Art in Gardening A wide selection of products are made available at ASPIDISTRA Garden Centre, each with its own unique character; each selected by Willie to develop the stimulus in gardening whereby he is able to reflect the nature of perfected gardening.
The photos in this article are carefully selected to underline the therapeutic fullness, and the importance of reshaping gardening unto a higher level of understanding. The art of gardening stimulates the human mind, and therefore adds to the release of added stress.
A Healthy Spirit To Willie gardening is his life; he lives creativity, and believes every person has the hidden ability to live creativity. “Gardening is good for the human soul; it keeps the entire body healthy; it builds and maintains a healthy spirit.” To him the secret in maintaining a healthy presence is bringing out nature’s creativeness hidden within the element of gardening. Furthermore, “To those who are not feeling well or even depressed the secret in regaining composure lies in gardening.” Through experience he confirms, “To weed the garden or to plant new shrubs uplifts the human moral; it enhances relaxation, it stimulates the brain, and enhances mental health.”
To enhance the importance of gardening, Willie engaged in compiling a coffee table book reflecting the beauty of gardening. The publication will be available in December 2015. Come and see for yourself what can be done with an old wheelbarrow, bath and door, broken pottery, builder’s rubble and pieces of wood. Everything can be turned into something unique. Instead of rows upon rows of plants, making you yawn with boredom, you can pick and choose your plants, containers, garden embellishments in this amazing setting, while getting your imagination fired up with all the visual inspiration around you at the same time! Visit ASPIDISTRA's charming tea garden under the trees, before spending a couple of hours quietly taking in the many, captivating scenes in the nursery's garden itself.
Gardening to his opinion is nothing short of the best in therapeutic therapy. Why call upon a psychiatrist, if gardening provides the best in therapy. Notwithstanding his great love for gardening, Willie qualified in 1987 as a Clinical Psychologist at the University of Pretoria. He practiced as a Psychologist for almost 5 years, where after he became actively involved in the nursery industry, his occupation for the past 21 years. In 2001 he moved to Cape Town and purchased the ASPIDISTRA Garden Centre, near Stellenbosch.
Motivation through creation Willie says, “Every object that comes my way has a distinct meaning, be it broken, as the lives of people in general are, I see the beauty in the object, even as I see the beauty within man, and

Following best practice principles of other international low cost airlines, FlySafair will be charging passengers a base rate which secures them a seat on the flight, and allows for two pieces of free carry-on luggage weighing no more than 7kg in total. Extras such as catering, check-in luggage, pre-booked preferential seats or extraspace seats such as those in the front rows or at emergency exits, will be charged for according to passengers’ specific needs.
“FlySafair’s entry into the domestic market offers passengers a welcome alternative to the previously high prices for air travel. At FlySafair we believe in offering our passengers affordable value by allowing them to tailor make their flight experience,” says Andrew. “With almost 50 years’ of charter and commercial flying experience, we now welcome the opportunity to prove that as a proudly South African and a true low cost carrier, our brand is synonymous with safety, affordability, quality, and of course, choice,” concludes Andrew. Asata Welcomes Deferment
Successful Cape Winelands
of New Immigration Regulations
Tourism Expo 2014
The Association of Southern African Travel Agents has welcomed Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba’s announcement that the new immigration regulations that require South African travellers to apply for unabridged birth certificates to travel internationally with their children under the age of 18 due to come in to effect on 1 October 2014, have been deferred until end May 2015. The deferment comes following months of fervent lobbying by ASATA and its trade association partners in South Africa, including meetings with both the Minister and Deputy Minister, letters to the Ministry and opinion pieces in the press, to raise awareness of the negative impact these new immigration regulations would have on the travel and tourism sectors and the shortfalls in the ability of Home Affairs to meet their own objectives regarding various amendments to the Immigration Act. Since the regulations were announced on May 22, 2014, ASATA has been working relentlessly to drive engagement with the Ministry and outbound travel sector to ensure better understanding of the issues, practical implications and minimal confusion and disruption to the travelling public. “We are grateful to have had the opportunity to address our concerns with Minister Gigaba regarding the impact of these new immigration regulations and pleased that these concerns have been heard and reacted to in this way. “We look forward to engaging with the department over the next few months to find a suitable solution for all parties involved including the appointment of a joint government industry task team that will work to fully understand the objectives, identify international best practice and how these should be implemented effectively for SA. We also need to devise and roll-out a global public awareness and information campaign,” says ASATA CEO Otto de Vries.

The Cape Winelands Tourism Expo 2014 (CWTE) was hosted at Stellenbosch Lodge recently. CWTE showcased the importance of tourism development in the Cape Winelands District and its social, cultural and economic value. “The CWTE received tremendous support from stakeholders and participants, with the Stellenbosch Municipality as sole sponsor for the 6 workshops and the 2 days expo.” says Marinda Holtzhausen, the organizer of the CWTExpo. “CWTE aims to register a Western Cape Tourism Development Association that will represent Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMME) tourism products for marketing, training and development. This idea was met with great enthusiasm,” she adds. The target market for CWTE is local SMME Tourism product owners offering authentic tourism experiences. Thirty participants registered and saw the project through. SMME Tourism product owners interested to register for the 2015 program can contact Marinda Holtzhausen on 082 955 4725.

2017 stopover, which Cape Town has secured to host. The V&A Waterfront will host the racing fleet where an interactive race village will be open to the public for the full duration of the stopover.”
Bruce Parker-Forsyth (WorldSport), David Green, (V&A Waterfront), Itumeleng Pooe, (SAMSA), (Marine Tourism and Leisure, for Maritime Excellence).
The South African Marine Safety Authority (SAMSA) has joined the ranks of sponsors of the Volvo Ocean Race Cape Town stopover in November this year. WORLDSPORT, in association with the V&A Waterfront, will be hosting the fleet, which is expected to arrive at the beginning of November. Says Bruce Parker-Forsyth, CEO of WORLDSPORT, which is the host port delivery partner for Cape Town: “As the past few stopovers have proved, the race is a superb platform to achieve business tourism and sporting objectives for Cape Town and the Western Cape as well as showcase us on the international stage. The 2014 stopover at the V&A Waterfront also brings with it additional opportunity in promoting the
David Green, CEO of the V&A Waterfront, adds: “It’s the perfect venue for shore crews to prepare the boats for the next leg of the race and for sponsors and guests to enjoy the unique atmosphere Cape Town has to offer. This stopover will again see great events and activations that will bring an added level of activity to the 150 yearold harbour. As a working harbour, the ocean is a key part of who we are.”
The organizers of the FNB Wines2Whales (W2W) Mountain Bike (MTB) Events are pleased to welcome the TREAD Buffalo Category as an official weight division of the 2014 events. In order to qualify for the TREAD Buffalo Category teams need to boast a minimum combined weight of at least 180kg (excluding bicycles and equipment). “We are excited about the TREAD Buffalo association with the FNB W2W MTB Events,” says Sean Badenhorst, Editor Tread Magazine. “After having secured an association with so many other premium South African mountain bike events, we felt the one really missing has been the FNB W2W”. “The TREAD Buffalo category definitely adds depth to the event,” continues Badenhorst. “Riders that would normally just pedal to the finish now have a reason to pedal harder for a position or even a spot on the podium. Certificates will be handed to the final top three teams at each of the three events, while prizes will be couriered the week afterwards. Our media channels (magazine and website) will once again give the event the exposure it deserves”.
Parker-Forsyth continues that the partnership between the city, V&A Waterfront and WORLDSPORT has resulted in an ocean legacy programme being set up before and continuing after the Volvo Ocean Race stopover. The 2014/15 Volvo Ocean Race will begin in Alicante, Spain and head south some 6 500 nautical miles to Cape Town. The boats are expected in Cape Town at the beginning of November 2014. There will be an in-port race on 15 November, followed by the departure of the fleet on 19 November for Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

Last year, Badenhorst took part in the FNB W2W MTB Adventure for the first time and was suitably impressed. There will be a separate TREAD Buffalo Category for each of the three FNB Wines2Whales MTB events – Adventure, Ride and Race as well as a combined results ranking for all three events afterwards. Pre-registration as a TREAD Buffalo can be done on the official website. For more information visit www.treadbuffalo.co.za

Absa Cape Epic team heads for the snow The team behind the world’s foremost mountain bike stage race, the Absa Cape Epic in South Africa, is spreading its wings … into the Swiss Alps. From January 14th to 18th in 2015 it will stage Snow Epic, Europe’s first winter festival of biking, in the idyllic Alps town of Engelberg. The riding will be done on fatbikes, the new super fat-wheeled trend taking the world of cycling by storm. The event will also host a winter biking expo in the town at the same time. Absa Cape Epic founder Kevin Vermaak explained the thinking behind Snow Epic: “For many years we’ve been looking for an event to complement the Absa Cape Epic. Our goal when we started the Absa Cape Epic was to be foremost mountain bike stage race in the world, and many would say we’ve achieved that.” The Absa Cape Epic, first staged in 2004, has grown into the most televised mountain bike event in the world. It is rated hors categorie (beyond categorisation) by the Union Cycliste Internationale. Other events which enjoy similar status are the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana. Snow Epic riders will compete in five events over three days, each with its own distinct character, on trails and slopes normally reserved for skiing. The events will include a tough hill climb, a timed descent down a ski slope, a cross-country style loop in the Engelberg valley and a floodlit dual-slalom race. Daily riding times will vary from about two to three hours for leading riders to up to five hours for back markers.
The idea for Snow Epic arose when Meerendal Wine Estate owner and entrepreneur Herman Coertze – a long-standing friend of the Absa Cape Epic – took to fatbikes to train for the 2014 Absa Cape Epic in Engelberg, where he lives part of the year. The Absa Cape Epic has partnered with Coertze to organise Snow Epic.
Fatbiking originated in the United States, where the super-sized tyres were first used to negotiate the snowfields of Alaska and the sandy deserts of New Mexico. Now it is the fastest-growing segment of the United States’ cycling market and quickly gaining popularity around the world.
Snow Epic will include a fatbike and winter-biking expo in Engelberg. Leading fatbike and component manufacturers will be showcasing their new products there. Engelberg is the first European ski resort to follow many North American resorts which partially close ski slopes to accommodate fatbiking.
