It is being implemented by the Cape Craft and Design Institute (CCDI). Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities, delivered the keynote address at the announcement, held at the Design Park, a shared space where designers have access to equipment and resources to develop their innovations.

“We want to improve the success rate of businesses in the sector by at least 30%. Ultimately this could see the creation of 14 000 jobs,” said Minister Winde.

Minister Winde said: "Entrepreneurs are creating solutions for the world and building the brand of the Western Cape as a centre of innovation.”

Pro Project Engineering (Automatic bag packing machine for use in several industries, including food and beverage), PURIS (Method of increasing production of Soloton, a natural aroma chemical), Sea Monster (Production of digital content and animation which can be integrated into school curriculum), Go Metro (A back-end analytics tool that measures the performance of all modes of transport), ASHTECH (Reporting and monitoring system for food safety industry, which can be used on smartphones and tablets), iMobiMaMa (Interactive health services platform, using mobile technology to connect with pregnant women), Forge Technologies (Rewards-based mathematics and physical science game aimed at high school pupils in Grade 10-12), Nervedata, (Smart devices to track key operational data, including assets and staff, for businesses), Ajax Manufacturing, (High-resistant aluminium pole climbing shoes for professionals working on electrical or phone lines), Stroketech (Waterproof headsets for swimmers and extreme watersport athletes, allowing real time communication and audio), Ecoequilibrium, (Solar-powered pool cleaner) and Sinemac (Solar disconnector).

“We see South Africans like Mark Shuttleworth and Elon Musk who are changing the world because they invested in their ideas. Seeing the ideas of the entrepreneurs here today, I’m confident that South Africa’s next big innovator will come from the Design Park,” said Minister Winde. One of the recipients, Forge Technologies, has designed Intelleapp, a mathematics and science application for grade 10 to 12 pupils. Minister Winde said the park and fund offered valuable support to innovators for high-risk early stage innovation. “We support the growth of the Western Cape’s design sector, which contributes R14 billion to the national GDP. Projections show the Design Park could boost that to R20billion,” said Minister Winde. Minister said the park and fund were well set to increase the number of innovations that are commercialised and increase exports of design-related products.

Innovative SA Company Using U.S. Technology (Continue from page 1) Since Zoeller and Maskam partnered in 2010, the two businesses have sold and installed approximately R10 million of water treatment plants and pumps in South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia, Kenya and Nigeria. It is another success story of the U.S government’s Doing Business in Africa (DBIA) campaign. President Barack Obama announced last year $7 billion in new financing was available to support American exports and investment in Africa. “This win-win partnership is creating jobs in South Africa and the U.S. Equally important this business is having a meaningful impact on communities improving critical infrastructure here and elsewhere in Africa,” said Consul General Taylor. “This is an US-South African partnership with a Stellenbosch company working on this innovation with international companies - another proof that we are truly the Innovation Capital of South Africa,” said Mr Sidego.

Western Cape Cycling Season in full swing (Continue from page 1) “The Cape Roleur generated over R9 million for our economy in 2014. The Absa Cape Epic netted a further R300 million last year. On average, the Cape Town Cycle Tour brings over R400 million into the Western Cape each year. These world-class events showcase the diversity of our province as a cycling destination and will play a key role in our cycling offering. These events drive interest in cycling in the province, which has led to an upsurge in hobby cycling by road and mountain bike. This is generating additional economic opportunities,” said Minister Winde. Minister Winde is leading the drive to attract 100 000 cycling tourists to the Western Cape each year. In September last year, Minister Winde launched the Cycle Tourism Framework, which is the first step towards a Cycling Tourism Strategy and in November, he launched a new mountain bike route at the !Khwa ttu San Culture and Education Centre. The Western Cape Government, Wesgro and the private sector will meet to map out plans for the province’s cycling economy. “The cycling economy adds jobs in the tourism industry, in our rural spaces and in the cycling goods supply industry. It also starts to shift minds around different modes of transport,” said Minister Winde.

Kirstenbosch Hits The Million Mark The Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town attracted over one million visitors last year, SANBI CEO, Dr Tanya Abrahamse announced on 19 February. Attaining this historic milestone has secured Kirstenbosch’s status as one of the most important tourist attractions in South Africa, said Minister of Tourism, Derek Hanekom, who visited the garden with global leaders in tourism. The Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization of the United Nations (UNWTO), Mr Taleb Rifai, and the President and CEO of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), Mr David Scowsill, joined Minister Hanekom and Western Cape MEC for Tourism, Mr Alan Winde, on a tour of the garden. “The milestone achieved by Kirstenbosch is a tribute to the hard work and vision of the South African National Biodiversity Institute,” said Minister Hanekom. He said South Africa’s botanical gardens provided a window on South Africa’s rich natural heritage, exposing visitors to the country’s biodiversity. Mr Rifai underscored this, adding that the value of biodiversity for tourism was immeasurable. SANBI CEO, Dr Tanya Abrahamse, said the opening last year of the Tree Canopy Walkway, or “Boomslang” as it is known, had led to a surge in visitors, resulting in achieving the one million milestone for the first time in the garden’s 102-year history.“ The Tree Canopy Walkway has become a prime attraction as one of our legacy projects,” said Dr Abrahamse. “Kirstenbosch is well-known as a ‘must see’ destination when planning a trip to South Africa, so when international tourism experts visit the country it’s no surprise that they would like to visit this iconic spot.” SANBI celebrated its 10th anniversary last year, and next year will mark the 40th year of Kirstenbosch exhibiting at the Chelsea Flower Show in London.“This is a true reflection of SANBI’s commitment to conserving the country’s unique biodiversity,” said Dr Abrahamse.

South Africa is one of the most biologically diverse countries in the world and is home to nearly 10% of the world’s plant species, 7% of the reptile, bird and mammal species and 15% of known coastal marine species. SANBI protects, promotes and conserves the country’s national heritage through a variety of programmes. “Our educational and job creation projects offer many solutions to the challenges that we face, and is key to conserving our planet,” said Dr Abrahamse. SANBI’s outreach projects ensure that the youth of today become the custodians of our natural heritage tomorrow. Schools visit the gardens to gain an understanding of the value of biodiversity and why it should be protected at all costs.

Cape Winemakers Guild - Viticulture Internship Kicks Off The Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG), Protégé Programme a mentorship scheme with the goal of effecting transformation in the wine industry, has enrolled its first viticulture intern alongside three new winemaking protégés for 2015. This year’s intake of four new protégés brings to 17 the total number of interns who have participated in the programme since its inception in 2006, with no less than nine graduates currently working in the wine industry. Under the mentorship of members of the Guild and the patronage of the Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Development Trust, Oenology and Viticulture protégés are cultivated, nurtured and empowered to become masters of their craft while enjoying the rare opportunity of working side by side with leaders in the industry. Breathing new life into the programme, Logan Jooste of Kylemore outside Stellenbosch, is the first candidate for the two and a half year CWG VinPro Viticulture Protégé Programme.

As part of the City’s strategy to leverage its economic assets in order to create an enabling economic environment and to facilitate job creation, various development options are being considered for the Good Hope Centre. The City of Cape Town has proposed that the Good Hope Centre in the city’s CBD be used as a temporary or short-term film studio for three years, with a single tenant or combination of tenants from the film industry. The decision to consider alternative uses stems from the fact that the repair cost for the facility is approximately R16 million. The land value is estimated at R145 million. Long-term plans for the centre will take three to five years to develop. In the meantime, Cape Town’s film sector has seen a boom in film and related activities to the extent that all three of the city’s current film studios are fully booked for the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

The City was approached by a number of film companies to consider the temporary or shortterm use of the Good Hope Centre as a film studio and has commenced with this process. Current vendors have been given more than four months’ notice in order to look for alternative venues. The City has made every effort to ensure that key international events are not disrupted.

There will also be consultation with affected communities. Once the lease/rental agreement has been finalised, the City will advertise its intent. “The City’s considered view is that the centre will have a far greater economic and job creation impact as a temporary film studio, as opposed to continued (significantly subsidised) community usage. Currently, it costs more than R5 million per annum to operate, while income is less than R3 million per annum. A number of other City facilities are available to fulfil the functions of the majority of activities that take place at the Good Hope Centre,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Economic Development, Councillor Garreth Bloor.

The Tale of Two Brothers – Deux Frères This is the story of two brothers, Stephan and Retief du Toit, co-owners of the Le Present farm on the R44 between Stellenbosch and Klapmuts, and their Deux Frères Wines. In 2008 Stephan and Retief decided to plant four varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot to make up a Bordeaux blend, as well as Shiraz and Mourvèdre to make a Rhone styled blend. After their first harvest they decided to plant a small block of Malbec which they added into their Bordeaux blend, and also expanded with Mourvèdre to make a Provence styled Rosé. Stephan and two farm assistants, Niklaas and Seppi, planted 9,480 vines on a 2.2ha area all by themselves which today is all hand reared. The wines produced are showing great potential and the vineyards are doing very well. Stephan and his team put great effort into working the vineyards as organic or biodynamic as possible.

Tasting a wine that is more approachable, with structure, and which opens up and evolves, is absolutely fantastic - that is what Deux Frères Wines is all about, an exhilarating wine experience produced by two brothers. Stephan studied Viticulture at Elsenburg, but never engaged in the formal training of winemaking. Most of Stephan’s winemaking knowledge and experience in chemistry he acquired while working under Francois Naude. His ultimate goal is to create wine that blends in with consumer requirements. Cultivars Liberté, 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon - Petit Verdot: These are low yielding vines of 5-6 tons per hectare which were hand-picked in the early hours of the morning to ensure freshness and quality. With optimally ripe grapes the wines were fermented in open stainless steel fermenters with regular and rigorous punch-downs during fermentation. After fermentation the wines were aged for eighteen months in small French barriques. The wine has a deep ruby and purple colour which derives mostly from the Petit Verdot. Classic Cabernet aromas of black cherry, current, kirsch and tobacco stands out on the nose. On the palate the Petit Verdot gives backbone to the Cabernet with flavours of cocoa and coffee. Stephan says, “The wine is packed with dark fruit flavours with subtle tannin for a long lingering finish. If I had to do it again I would change nothing.”

Le Present produces wines under the label Deux Frères, which means “two brothers” for both the local and international market. Stephan believes that the export market gives the smaller Boutique Winemaker better exposure to boutique labels internationally than in South Africa. The Winemaker Stephan du Toit started at L’Avenir as an assistant winemaker under the guidance of Francois Naude in 2000 and worked with him for five years. When Francois retired in 2005 he stayed on for a year working under the new owner, Michelle Laroche from France. The following year he was employed at Marianne Wine Estate and worked with Christian Doriac, owner of three cellars in France. Stephan was very fortunate to experience a harvest in St-Émilion, and spent three months working in two Chateaus in St-Émilion and one in the Pomorol area of France.

The Liberté, 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon - Petit Verdot was awarded a Silver Medal at Veritas Awards in 2013; a Silver Medal at Decanter World Wine Awards in 2014, and received a Silver Medal at Veritas Awards in 2014. Fraternité, 2012 Shiraz - Mourvèdre: These grapes are handpicked in 20kg lug boxes to ensure the fruit stays at its best for the cellar. The grapes are destalked and pumped to stainless steel fermenters using punch down techniques for flavour and colour extraction. Thereafter it is aged in a selection of 225L barriques. “From the first time the Shiraz and Mourvèdre was produced it maintained a good enough quality to put under the farm's label. A challenging growing season with warm spells made it very tricky to decide on a harvest date. A beautiful blend showing each cultivar's own characteristics - black fruits and spice from the Shiraz and red berry fruit from the Mourvèdre. Easy drinking with low 13.5% alcohol,” says Stephan. The Fraternité, 2012 Shiraz - Mourvèdre was awarded 4 Stars in the Platter’s Wine Guide of 2014; a Silver Medal at Decanter World Wine Awards in 2014, and also received a Silver Medal at Veritas Awards in 2014. Blanc de Noir – 2013: The Blanc de Noir grapes were destalked, crushed and moved directly to the basket press. During pressing, continuous tasting occurred while Stephan keeps a close eye on the colour of the juice. After settling, the juice is cold fermented in a tank. After fermentation the wine was left on its lees for 3 weeks - then prepared for bottling.

2015 Shiraz in the making

To Stephan, moving away from the massive flavours and bold alcohols found in South African wines, and getting use to the French wines, more delicate, and layered in flavour, opens a whole new world to one’s taste buds.

Stephan continues, “The process of making a Blanc de Noir differs quite a lot from that of Rosé wines, and by using a varietal such as Mourvèdre, the colour of the wine is truly unique. A pale salmon/coral pink, sweet red fruits from the Mourvèdre makes this wine a delight to drink. The wine is dry and carries bold flavours that gives it dimension with or without a meal, and should be serve well chilled.” Take time out, sit back and relax with a glass of Deux Frères Fraternité, 2012 Shiraz Mourvèdre and you will appreciate this classic, well respected wine that could never be excluded from its rightful position among Wine Connoisseurs.

The Liberté, 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon - Petit Verdot is reviewed by The Newspaper as yet another of Stephan’s remarkable achievements in blending these two cultivars. Even the Blanc de Noir took us by surprise. Deux Frères is a Boutique Winery that will most definitely take the connoisseur wine drinker by surprise. ART & CULTURE

SAADA Expo

New history exhibition opens

V&A Waterfront

at University Museum

The 50th annual South African Antiques Art and Design Association (SAADA) Expo, took place from 13-15 February at The Lookout, V&A Waterfront. The association has been very successful in promoting and selling South African antiques.

A new exhibition on the history of Stellenbosch University (SU) opened at the University Museum, 52 Ryneveld Street, Stellenbosch on 18 February 2015 with Prof Leopoldt van Huyssteen, SU's Acting Rector and Vice-Chancellor as guest speaker at the official opening. The exhibition, titled Universiteit Stellenbosch University: verlede hede toekoms/ past present future, provides a concise overview of the history of the University since the inception of Stellenbosch Gymnasium in 1866 and Stellenbosch College in 1879, which became Victoria College in 1887. SU developed from Victoria College and was opened officially on 2 April 1918. The exhibition covers the period up to 2014.

Having undergone a bit of a re-branding the association has repositioned itself to include a somewhat younger, hipper and more culturally diverse market with the same exacting standards. The majority of exhibitors are Cape Town based with some exhibitors from Johannesburg and abroad to showcase their art. A diverse range of art was displayed at the exhibition. Contemporary Art from Holden Manz Art Gallery in Franschhoek featured several artists. Fine art from Johans Borman Fine Art Gallery included the works of well know South African artists, Pierneef and Maggie Laubser. Other displays included Antiques and Modern Design, Silver, Jewellery, Antique Books, Carpets, and Oriental Collectables, not to mention City Coins supported by the SA Mint with Krugerrands as well as other collectable coins and medals. All treasures on display have their own unique story. Ricus Dullaert, from Kunsthandel H.W.C. Dullaert, from Amsterdam, a specialist in Chinese antiques, displayed a Ming dynasty (1368-1644) charger of blue and white Chinese porcelain - a replica made in the second half of the 20th century.

“The history of the university buildings receives a considerable amount of attention, with a series of highlights from each of the ten decades since 1918 concerning events and developments at SU,” says Prof Matilda Burden of the SU Museum, who researched, planned and installed the exhibition. “Over and above those highlights, the exhibition covers subjects such as the current residences, student culture, student language, sports clubs and the current faculties and departments. In addition, there is a virtual tour of the campus and a map displaying the layout of the campus, elucidated with coloured lights.” A few interesting artefacts from academic departments that were used in teaching in years gone by are on exhibition, as well as a number of objects from three of the oldest residences: Harmonie, Dagbreek and Monica. The museum and exhibition is open to the public daily from 09:00 – 16:30, Monday to Saturday and admission is free.

Flying High with Opera Singer Pretty Yende Pretty Yende pulls no punches when she talks about her career. “Look beyond the glitz and glam and know how much you need success.” During a whirlwind two-day visit to South Africa, the celebrated soprano took some time off to speak to 350 young people from Cape Town Opera’s Community and Outreach programme about her incredible journey from Piet Retief to the world’s opera stages.

Rictus informed The Newspaper that the original piece was made for the Emperor. The piece measures 107cm in diameter. The original is displayed in a Shanghai museum and is priceless. Another favourite exhibit was The Old Corkscrew, a premier South African Antiques dealer from Franschhoek who displayed a variety of silver, copper, porcelain, glass and wine collectables. A classic at the Expo was the display by Bukhara to Cape Town Suzani Textiles. Traditional Textile Art from the heart of Uzbekistan showcased the Beauty of these Traditional Hand Embroidered Silk Suzanis. The sculptures by Chris Bladen, one of the world’s best wild fish sculptors caught the eye by surprise. His various displays of creating bronze sculptures with a chemical patination technique to render the scales and colours of the fish is unique. For more information visit www.saada.co.za

Pretty Yende with children & teachers from Cape Town Opera’s Community Outreach Programme

She was clear that talent alone isn’t enough. Achievement takes burning ambition, dogged determination and a huge dose of commitment. Pretty’s journey began in high school, when she saw a British Airways’ television advertisement featuring the Flower Duet from Lakmé and she knew what she needed to do. Some 13 years later British Airways flew the now internationally recognised soprano from Italy to South Africa, to perform at the eve of parliament function in Cape Town. What has happened in-between is remarkable. Pretty joined the school choir, where her determination took her from high school to UCT, where she studied under Virginia Davids, the associate professor of singing, where she graduated cum laude. She started singing at prestigious international competitions and won. Her list of achievements include winning all the big prizes at the Hans Gabor Belvedere as well as wins at Montserrat Caballé, Savonlinna, Leyla Gencer and Bellini. In 2012 winning Placio Domigo’s Operalia competition led to her becoming the first black opera singer to perform at the famous Teatro All Scala. A year later she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. With minimal rehearsal and despite falling on-stage on opening night, she went on to deliver a performance which won a standing ovation and critical acclaim. Her career has taken her to opera houses in Moscow, Vienna, New York, London, Edinburgh, Los Angeles and Barcelona. Back in South Africa her message to the young people at the Cape Town Opera was: “There’s a lot of talent and opportunity here, but to turn it into success we need people who dream bigger, work harder and never give up.” Pretty’s debut album will be out later this year on Sony Classics.

CAPE RETIREMENT & LIFESTYLE EXPO The Cape’s first Retirement & Lifestyle Expo takes place at the Lord Charles Hotel, Somerset West on the 6 – 8 March 2015. The expo aims to become the premier retirement and lifestyle expo in the Western Cape. It is for people planning their retirement and those already retired, seeking a happier and more active, secure and hassle-free lifestyle. During the early part of 2014, Rob Jones of Shire Retirement Properties shared a concept with Okkie Potgieter that he had been considering for some time – the development of a retirement expo in the Western Cape, organised by the industry members themselves with the assistance of an experienced event organiser. Peter Aspinall of SBS Conferences and Exhibitions was approached and immediately agreed to run the expo. Several major participants in the retirement and lifestyle sectors in the Western Cape were contacted and immediately warmed to the idea of an expo that delivered what the industry wanted, close to their own developments and at an affordable price. One of the great things about this expo is that SBS is working with a group of knowledgeable industry experts to ensure they keep the focus on retirement and lifestyle. The exhibition will be open from 10:00-17:00 on Friday, 06 March, 09:00-17:00 on Saturday, 07 March and 09:00 – 15:00 on Sunday, 08 March. The exhibition visitor costs are R50 - which includes free workshops and parking.

To enhance visitor’s experience even more there will be a series of free 45 minute workshops running on the first two days, Friday and Saturday 6 & 7 March. These will address; investments, structuring your estate, choosing and buying a retirement property, nutrition & health and managing dementia & Alzheimer’s. Entrance to the workshops will be free subject to space availability on a first come first served basis. For more information contact SBS on 021 914 2888 or visit www.sbs.co.za/retire2015

THE NEWSPAPER

From Humble Beginnings to Successful Business This is the story of Natasha and Lindy van Diemen, despite growing up in Grassypark, the two sisters raised from humble beginnings to successful business owners and entrepreneurs - both driven by passion and determination to make a success.

Today, Corporate Companies use the mobile showroom as a marketing tool to promote their products and services by going to private clients, taking their brands to the market. Using Orisons promoters trained in product and brand knowledge, interacting with their customers, assisting and hosting launches, measurable brand awareness is created. Orisons Promotions has organized close to 400 activations with the mobile showroom in 2014. Eternal Child was born The story continues when corporate clients from Orisons activations requested Lindy and Natasha, as brand ambassadors, to provide hand and neck massages at some corporate events offering wellness days to their clients and staff. First they used body products provided by their clients, but then decided it was time to follow their own passion and produce their own luxury body products – a dream becoming a reality!

Natasha and Lindy van Diemen

Today they not only own Orisons Activations, a brand activation and promotions company but are the proud developers of the Eternal Child luxury body care products range as well as the wellness Spa, situated in the southern suburb of Tokai - rated as one of the top Wellness Spa’s in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town. In 1999 the two sisters decided to start a modelling agency. Although the two sisters are complete opposites of each other, they work well together as a team. Sixteen years ago, with a good understanding of modelling Lindy and Natasha started Outlook Models. Soon their clients were also interested in them assisting with promotions and events. Natasha realized that there are many brands on the market that need to promote their products. Natasha van Diemen Natasha used her entrepreneurial skills to create Orisons Promotions in 1999, a company which provides high quality active strategy’s and brand ambassadors to both main and formal markets. As a business-woman she achieved great success in the events and brand activation industry over the past 12 years. In 2009 she was the winner of South African Breweries Kick-Start Competition and was funded a Mobile showroom, the first in the country. As Natasha had no formal training she decided to study at the Louis Group Business Academy in 2011, where she was awarded 3rd prize out of 70 students. Lindy van Diemen Lindy has been with Orisons since the start. She has managed activations, trained promoters, engaged in client negotiations and has closed many deals - Motorola, GrandWest Casino, Distell and SAB to name a few. She also managed major events such as North Sea Jazz Festival, Grand West smoking casino. Currently Lindy manages the Finance Department.

The name “Eternal Child” was born while brainstorming with staff in finding a suitable name for their new Body Care Company. Lindy and Natasha decided to leave a legacy for their children – therefore the E for Eternal stands for Emma, Lindy’s child, and the C in Child stands for Chloe, Natasha’s daughter. Background In 2012 Natasha and Lindy started with the Research and Development of Eternal Child. Spending time learning about the wellness industry in Holland. Together they created a luxurious range of bath and body products that would leave a person feeling as royalty. In October 2013 Eternal Child opened doors as a day Spa with 4 treatment rooms, providing treatment for individuals or couples. Eternal Child became a brand designed and developed by the Van Diemen sisters and promoted through Orisons Activations. Presently Natasha is the spokesperson, attending all the workshops and interviews with her outspoken personality, while Lindy is the one that is office based, handling the finances and operations. They started manufacturing the foot care range first, followed by other products in smaller quantities to personalize their product range for their clients.

Orisons Promotions Run by Natasha Van Diemen, Orisons has more than 11 years’ experience in taking brands to the market for clients such as SAB, Capitec, Grandest, Heart FM, KFC and many more and are equipped to service all markets. As part of a business competition in 2009, called Kickstart, Natasha was asked to come up with a product or showroom that can enhance Orisons Promotions and make it easier for brands to reach out to the main market. As winner of the competition, a mobile showroom was built and launched in 2010 at the Fernwood Estate as a South African Breweries and Orisons collaboration. The first luxury mobile unit was used for corporate events and company branding by Nissan, GrandWest Casino, Pick ‘n Pay, Capitec, Avroy Slain, Curves Ladies Gym, Hansa Pilsner, Department of Transport, SAB, Western Cape Government, schools, and many more which quickly led to Orisons increasing its number of mobile units.

From opening day Eternal Child Spa provided service to over 3000 customers. Clients from areas as wide as Franschhoek and Hermanus return frequently for pampering at the Spa and the rebooking of services is one of the successes of the business. The Eternal Child Spa is well established creating an environment for the customer to feel at home. Their qualified therapist’s treat customers with respect, dignity and supply them with a first class service and quality products that make them feel rejuvenated and relaxed.

WORLD CLASS INSTITUTION INVITES POTENTIAL FRANCHISEES TO JOIN THEIR WINNING MOMENTUM With passion for training bred on the fire ground, an emerging market leader in Health and Safety Training was birthed. Riverport Training Academy (RTA) is a Health and Safety Training Institute rooted in humble beginnings and an inspiring history. The institute originated in East London in 1998, and through its momentous progression has flourished into an emerging market leader. The training institution was founded by the current Chief Executive Officer, Dane Herman. From a young age, Dane aspired to be an entrepreneur. Having been raised by a single mother, the first form of entrepreneurial training that he got was from his uncle who was an entrepreneur in a small town. School holidays spent helping his uncle was a formative experience. On the completion of his schooling, Dane had applied to join the municipal fire department. He passed the rigorous tests and spent more than a decade working his way up in the fire department, which resulted in him ending up in the training division. He was exposed to a vast array of massive fire and rescue operations, which included rescuing passengers off the sinking Ocean Liner, The Oceanos. After his time at the fire department, he planned to start a Health and Safety institution and gradually built up a profile of corporate clients. Further along the line, one of his clients – The South African Breweries, had a vacancy for a local risk manager and thus offered him the job seeing that they were so impressed by the standards of his work they had come to know. Dane knew it was an opportunity to learn world class standards in Health and Safety, but knew he was destined to run his own business. In the end he got the best of both worlds, as SAB agreed that he could continue running his own training business whilst working as their risk manager.

CUSTOMER RELATIONS Riverport Training Academy values their clients as integral parts of their long term success and not as a stream of faceless transactions. RTA has a standard of excellence they meet at every stage of service delivery – from when clients interact with friendly office clerks right down to when clients receive training from industry experts who collectively have over 100 years of experience in the Health and Safety industry. RTA constantly displays phenomenal work ethic and operations to grow market share. RTA has developed an unparalleled brand reputation in providing incomparable training and consulting services. In present day, RTA has market coverage in the entire Eastern Cape – with branches in Port Elizabeth and Mthatha, as well as headquarters in East London. FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITIES Through having registered Riverport Training Academy as a franchise through the Franchise Association of South Africa (FASA), the training institution is now poised to expand nationwide. The company envisions selling 25 franchised branches throughout South Africa. Franchise operations are available for the Southern Cape (1), Cape Town (2), and the West Coast (1).

Dane enrolled at the University of Port Elizabeth to do his MBA and once it was completed, he yet again yearned to work for himself. He recalls an unforgettable moment of sitting at his computer one day and seeing money flooding into his account and hearing his phone ring to no end. This moment was the major turning point for the training institution – from this moment the institution went onto gaining an ever growing market share. TRAINING ACADEMY Riverport Training Academy currently offers 53 accredited and unit standard aligned Health and Safety Training courses, in Marine Safety, Fire Safety and First Aid Training. RTA is accredited with MERSETA (The Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services SETA), as well as with SAMSA (South African Maritime Safety Authority) and with the Department of Labour. They also offer consulting and auditing services, and sell a broad selection of safety equipment to members of commerce and industry. RTA consistently increases their product offerings by acquiring new accreditations. The company is now also venturing into the High Voltage Electrical Training Field.

Exclusive territories will be granted to each franchisee. Franchisees will receive a complete turnkey operation, will benefit from the existing and new accreditation the company receives, will receive ongoing support from Head Office and will receive a return on their investment in approximately two and a half years. The training institution is inviting prospective franchisees with business acumen to join this lucrative brand and its lineage of great entrepreneurial minds. Join tomorrow’s Health and Safety Training leaders TODAY. Cape Town Cycle Tour On Sunday, 8 March 2015, 35 000 cyclists will line up in Hertzog Boulevard, Cape Town to participate in the world’s largest timed cycling event, the Cape Town Cycle Tour. From humble beginnings, the event - now in its 38th year – has become a permanent feature on the calendars of professional and recreational cyclists worldwide. General public entries for the 2015 event opened on 26 September 2014, and closed in a record eight hours. History of the Tour Back in 1978 two Cape Town cycling enthusiasts decided to hold a “Big Ride-In” to raise awareness about cycling safety and to lobby for dedicated bike paths. Little did John Stegmann and Bill Mylrea realise that their humble ambitions would give rise to one of the world’s iconic cycling events.

Vantage points will be accessible to the general public. Experience the Grand Finale in style!

Mountaintop Grand Finale for Tour De Boland One of South Africa’s premier road tours, the five-day Bestmed Tour de Boland is drawing a growing international field of professional and amateur riders eager to experience true African racing. The 2015 edition of the tour, will start on 2 March in Paarl and will finish at the Taal Monument on 6 March. The 2015 Bestmed Tour de Boland route, which is presented by Pinarello, will feature a total distance of 465km, more than 700 participants, a total vertical ascent of 4 428m and offering a serious challenge and prizes to South Africa’s top pro and amateur teams, it aims to re-establish the tradition of the iconic road tour.

The first cycle tour started in Strand Street and attracted 525 riders. Of these 446 successfully crossed the finish line in Camps Bay and 14 completed the course in under three hours and 30 minutes. It immediately became an annual event and entry numbers grew steadily, topping 2 000 in 1983, 3 000 in 1985 and then leaping to more than 15 000 in 1991. In 1997 the 20th Cycle Tour attracted 30 000 riders, and since then entries have never dropped below the 30 000 mark. Stegmann and Mylrea had planned to name the ride the “Peninsula Marathon”, but the Cape Argus newspaper came on board as a sponsor and so the “Argus Cycle Tour” was born. Within four years the race had grown so much that a bigger organisational team was needed to keep things running smoothly. For the next 18 years the Pedal Power Association (PPA) and the Rotary Club of Claremont organised the event together. In 2000 members from both those organisations joined forces to create the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, which has run the event since then. Now, 38 years later, the iconic ride is simply known as the Cape Town Cycle Tour. In that time it has become a celebration of Cape Town – its route winds around the beautiful Cape Peninsula – and a leading tourism attraction. It is also the world’s largest timed cycle race, attracting top professional riders and enthusiastic amateurs from all corners of the planet. It is internationally renowned for the standard of its organisation and accommodates riders wanting to race as well as those looking for a fun experience. In 2007 the then Cape Argus/Pick n Pay Cycle Tour was named one of the Top 10 cycling events by National Geographic. It is also acclaimed as one of the most environmentally-responsible sport events in the world. In 2012, charity entries were introduced for the first time with 5 000 entries offered to charities and corporate groups. Charitable causes linked to the Cape Town Cycle Tour range from as those designed to help the homeless and destitute, to preventing rhino poaching and skin cancer.

Australian-based UCI Professional Continental team Drapac will participate in the Bestmed Tour de Boland, which is headed up by South African export Dylan Girdlestone. It will be the team’s first participation on African soil, since being awarded ProConti status last year. According to race director Carinus Lemmer, the 2015 edition promised to be the most closely contested tour to date. Franschhoek-born sprinter Nolan Hoffman will delight his local supporters as he spearheads the Abantu attack in preparation for his Cape Town Cycle Tour title defense. While the bigger teams are expected to dominate the tactics, one or two pairings could throw the cat among the pigeons. Cannondale-Blend’s seasoned climber Darren Lill, who powered up Franschhoek Pass to scoop the final stage win last year, is one such rider. Switzerland’s multiple Cape Epic champion Christoph Sauser and Tankwa Trek winner Erik Kleinhans will pair up in the colours of Aramex to drive the pace on their local training routes. The closest any runner has come since then is Zimbabwean Marko Mambo, who ran 3:05:39 in 2005, and who has won the race three times. Russian Olesya Nurgalieva ran the second fastest women’s time in 2008 when she crossed the finish line in 3:34:53. This will be the 16th year that Old Mutual sponsors this prestigious road race.
