Ivan Zimmerman, V & A Waterfront, Cape Town

Actor, Ivan Zimmerman is a true inspiration to many South Africans after completing the gruesome Tour d’Afrique from Cairo to Cape Town which commenced on 9 January 2015. After a few weeks back in Cape Town, Ivan has been overwhelmed with telephone calls, media enquiries, and radio and television interviews sharing his story! Sage Pastel Accounting and SAICA, proud sponsors of Ivan Zimmermann’s Tour d’Afrique journey as well as many fans who followed his journey on social media, welcomed the actor at the V & A Waterfront in Cape Town on 9 May, having completed his 12 063 km, and a 121-day journey across Africa.

EVENTS Page 10

After a hearty welcome from the Capetonians Ivan received a medal for 3rd place - exceeding all expectations. Ivan among others also received membership of the elusive EFI Club. These men managed to deal with all the unforeseen circumstances travelling through Africa every kilometre of the way! With the theme for the Tour d’Afrique being, “Leaders Never Quit” Sage Pastel thought it fit to encourage businesses in forging ahead in 2015 just like Ivan did on his journey. Daryl Blundell, general manager of Sage Pastel Accounting says, "We sponsored Ivan’s ride because we saw similarities between his journey and the long roads small businesses travel toward achieving success in South Africa. Like Zimmermann, entrepreneurs must be dedicated, forward-thinking, and strong to succeed." "As South Africa’s biggest supporter of small and medium sized businesses, we think his journey is an inspiration. At Sage Pastel Accounting, we are well aware of the difficulties that businesses can encounter on the road to success, but the end reward makes it all worthwhile," Daryl adds.

Leaders Never Quit (Continue from page 1) Why Ivan participated in the Tour d’Afrique? Ivan says, “It was something in me that I had to do. I needed to prove to myself that I can do this journey. It was a lifelong dream. It was time to fulfil that dream, not only to dream the dream, but to get the message across to everybody out there - listen to your heart and do your dreams!” Ivan was overwhelmed with the idea of being the “Man of the Hour,” but said, it was a great team effort from his sponsors, SAICA and Sage Pastel Accounting making his dream possible. He felt honoured being part of the challenge and thanked motivational speakers Bruce Fordyce, former Comrades Marathon winner and the adventurer Riaan Manser for their words of encouragement. “One of the reasons why I decided to participate in this journey is to show that ordinary people like myself can achieve extraordinary things. By focusing, having a clear goal and preparing for the task at hand,” Ivan continues.

Tour de Afrique Experience The Tour d’Afrique started off with night temperatures in the dessert of minus 5°C, while travelling through the Sudan the day temperature rose up to 49-50°C. They travelled 150 km on average per day. The highest point they reached was 3,500 metres above sea level. It was difficult to find decent nutrition when exposing their bodies to so much stress – many of the cyclists took ill. Travelling through these African countries made Ivan realize that South Africans have so much to be grateful for. He was so proud to be a South African when he reached the South African border at Vioolsdrift! “Some days I felt very bad, but knew I had to cycle to get my medal. It was tuff days out there, but it made me realize that the journey never ends.” “My journey did not end in Cape Town. You always create new challenges for yourself. From the start I told myself I’m never going to quit.” “I am very privileged to say that I’ve never quit, even though I was exposed to flu and diarrhea.” “It is so important to challenge yourself in life, but also to challenge yourself physically as it gives you mental confidence.” Ivan was not prepared to take credit for what he had achieved. He says, “The biggest challenges that we face in life is our fears and we have to overcome them - It is a lifelong process. Face your fears and challenges and become the most you are supposed to be.” Ivan completed the journey by collecting 5,000 cans of food for the hungry, as part of the Can-A-Kilo initiative. These cans will be distributed by the Hanna Charity and Empowerment Foundation in South Africa.

One of Ivan’s motivational points from #leadersneverquit is that you never compare yourself to other people. Everyone has their own challenges, and must set their own goals.

Junior Cyclist on his way to Europe

A junior cyclist from Oudtshoorn, Louis Visser is one step closer to making his cycling dreams come true when he heads off to Europe for a month of road racing. Louis started cycling at the age of twelve when he participated in a few fun rides on his grandfather’s mountain bike. He was spotted by Eden Cycling’s president Corné Bence who borrowed him a road bike and has not looked back since. Even though road cycling is his first love, he enjoys mountain biking and takes part in most local races. This year he has won 4 MTB Marathon races, as well as cross country MTB race. The biggest achievement thus far was the gold medal he won at the African Continental Track Championships in January 2015 where he won 4 medals, gold in the scratch race and 3 silvers in the respective races, points, team sprint and team pursuit. All of the training for the track racing had to take place on the roads around Oudtshoorn as the nearest Velodrome is 450 km away. Training on a public road with a track bike is not an ideal situation and can be dangerous when you have to use the same road as learner truck drivers. Louis is currently the Eden road and time trial champion and has been awarded Eden (SWD) Colours for road cycling for the last 4 years. In 2013 he earned Eden Colours in Road, track, MTB Marathon and MTB Cross Country racing, showing a remarkable versatility in the sport of cycling. The focus has since been shifting more towards the road cycling and taking preference when training. Louis participated in both the Oudtshoorn and Bloemfontein Youth Cycling Festivals where they race against the best riders from across the country. In the road events he achieved 5 podium positions of a possible 6 of which were 1 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze. Road cycling is an endurance sport and requires many hours of hard and long training sessions. As 2014 was his last year as an under 16 an extra effort had to be made to make sure he will be ready for the Junior (under 18) category. This was a difficult transition and Louis decided to go on a three week base training programme to make sure he is ready for 2015. In 18 days he clocked up 1751 Km, 67.5 hours, and 24497m of ascent. For a scholar to get up at 05:00 every morning during December to train takes a huge amount of discipline and dedication. During a normal training week Louis would train between 14 -17 hours and during the base period extends his training to 22 hours. To fit those hours into training, resting and school takes good planning and lots of mental strength. As there are not many training partners in Oudtshoorn, most of his training is done alone.

During March Louis made contact with LEADout to join their academy and in May 2015 he was invited by LEADout Cycling to accompany them to Europe. LEADout is a cycling academy run by Barry and Ciska Austin and John Lee Augustyn as team manager. LEADout Cycling is a re-introduced cycling academy, previously known as ACI (Barry and Ciska Austin) that managed several current professional cyclists during their junior and U23 careers between 2004 and 2010 also remaining involved as mentors of several athletes who came through the structure along with the likes of Reinhardt Janse van Rensburg, Jaco Venter, Jacques Janse van Rensburg, Louis Meintjes and Johann van Zyl to name a few. The team will tour Europe, similar to professional athletes and participating in UCI classified events under the management and mentorship of Barry Austin and John-Lee Augustyn. The five week program will kick off on 17 July at Oberösterreich Juniorenrundfahrt (Austria), followed by Internationale Niedersachsen-Rundfahrt (Germany), then off to Ronde van Vlaanderen (Belguim), from there to Aubel - Thimister - La Gleize (Belgium), and the last race on 15-16 August will take place in Ronde des Vallées, France. LEADout Cycling and associated partners subsidize portions of the program, but can unfortunately not accommodate all costs. To enable Louis to join the tour he will need to raise a substantial amount before leaving for Europe on 14 July 2015. He is determined to raise the funds as he has put in a huge amount of time and effort and has been preparing for this moment for a very long time. If you can help Louis to make his dream come true, please contact Louis Visser (Snr) at 084 5700 405 or email visserlouis@ymail.com

Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group No 1 Deaf employer in Hotel Industry The Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group, one of the world’s largest and most dynamic hotel groups, with an award-winning “responsible business” programme, is the number 1 employer of deaf staff in South Africa. The Park Inn by Radisson Cape Town Newlands and Radisson Blu Le Vendome Hotel, situated in Cape Town, lead the way for the brand.

The initiative started eight years before the opening of the first hotel in Newlands.

Hotel in collaboration with DeafSA interviewed deaf and hard of hearing candidates for positions at the hotel.

Deaf Federation of South Africa (DeafSA), on a number of occasions, where approached by property development companies who wanted to renovate the organisation’s old building.

Currently the Park Inn by Radisson Newlands employs 24 staff members who are deaf or hard of hearing able to work in most departments. The hotel has a full time sign language interpreter available both to staff and guests.

DeafSA had bought their office building from the government decades ago for a very favourable price, but the organisation could not afford the maintenance of the large property. After long considerations and discussions, an agreement was made with a construction company to demolish the old building and replace it with a hotel. Park Inn by Radisson Park Inn by Radisson Cape Town Newlands and DeafSA have formed quite a unique partnership and the hotel opened in October 2014, with DeafSA being the main shareholder.

Having worked closely with DeafSA while the hotel was being developed, The Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group recognised a unique opportunity to welcome deaf staff into the hotel industry. The Park Inn by Radisson Newlands

The hotel hosts a huge emphasis on accessibility and offers five wheelchairfriendly rooms and a series of ramps. Radisson Blu Le Vendome Hotel On 28 April 2015 a new flagship, Radisson Blu Le Vendome Hotel, also opened in Cape Town, just a few minutes away from the city centre and V&A Waterfront. “We are exceptionally proud to have followed in the footsteps of our sister hotel Park Inn by Radisson Newlands by employing a significant number of team members who are deaf, embracing diversity and showing respect and care for our communities,” says Clinton Thom, General Manager, Radisson Blu Le Vendome Hotel Cape Town. According to management the employees with disabilities are hardworking, dependable employees, less

absent, with a higher retention rate and their productivity and efficiency are comparable to non-disabled employees. Furthermore, employees with disabilities contribute positively to the overall diversity, creativity and workplace morale and enhance the hotel’s image among its staff and customers. The partnership with these two hotels has not only resulted in employment opportunities for deaf and hard of hearing people, but has also created attention to the employment of persons with disabilities in general through the media as well as through the guests’ interaction at the hotel. “This is a big accomplishment for the world of hospitality. We are profoundly proud of the opportunities and training that our partnership with DEAFSA has created.” “We hope to see other hotel groups follow suit, and support talent development in the hotel industry, irrespective of physical limitations,” said Thom. Congratulations to the Rezidor Hotel Group - the 2015 winner of the innovation award in the diversity and inclusion category of the Guardian Sustainable Business Awards!

Oranjezicht City Farm Market Day Announces Winter Venue From Saturday 6 June 2015, the popular weekly farmer’s market founded by the Oranjezicht City Farm (OZCF) will relocate from its current venue at Leeuwenhof, the historic premier’s residence in Oranjezicht to the Granger Bay section of the V&A Waterfront.

With more than 60 traders and approximately 2 500 visitors every Saturday, Market Day has a direct economic impact estimated in excess of R25 million per annum, supporting nearly 200 jobs and 75 entrepreneurial small businesses including local farms. Trading every Saturday from 9am–2pm, the market is a true farmer’s market with a majority of the offering being fresh, locally-grown vegetables, fruit, herbs and other ingredients and pantry items such as bread, cheese, nuts, olive oil, spices, yoghurt, honey, ethically sourced meats, biltong, fish, and more. Fritz Rabe from Tanqua Karoo Natural Produce

The required move for the winter was taken up by OZCF several months ago as an opportunity to find additional partners and new infrastructure that would help increase the availability of fresh, healthy, locally-grown produce and to provide more support for the more than 15 local small-scale organic farmers that supply the market. After extended discussions with several potential partners at locations in and near the City Bowl, the V&A Waterfront was the clear choice at the Granger Bay site, near The Lookout event venue. A tented precinct for the market will be created for the winter, providing a cosy atmosphere, easy access, great views, protection from inclement weather and a safe, child-friendly set-up. Says Sheryl Ozinsky, a founding volunteer of the Oranjezicht City Farm, “The Waterfront have shown themselves to be truly committed to the goals of expanding access to local organic produce and expanding opportunities for our small-scale local organic farmers.”

This is supplemented with artisanal food traders selling breakfast and lunch fare to eat at the market or for takeaway, as well as coffees, teas, juices, smoothies and other items including catering for vegan, banting, gluten-free, sugar-free and other dietary preferences.

First Car Rental’s Cape Town depot has reduced municipal water usage by nearly 80% since installing the eWasha Washbay Water Recycling Plant. EWasha is a revolutionary car wash system that recycles used carwash water through a chemical-free, biological treatment process and then pumps it back into the carwash system. A rainwater storage system is installed in conjunction to this, further reducing the need for municipal water. Says Melissa Storey, Executive Head of Marketing and Strategy for First Car Rental, “Water is precious and we all have to do our bit to conserve South Africa’s precious resources. The eWasha Washbay System will have a profound impact on water conservation and is certainly the way forward.” First Car Rental is committed to inspiring green processes in the car rental industry.

In 2010 First Car Rental launched the world’s first Green Mobile Checkout facility – Show & Go Mobile Checkout – that allows corporate clients to bypass the branch avoiding queues and paperwork. The ‘green technology’ ensures the entire transaction from the online booking to closing off the contract after the rental period has ended, is paperless.

Pearl Valley Golfers Committed On and Off Course

Drakenstein Palliative Hospice, focused on the provision of palliative care in the Drakenstein region, has received R 270,000.00 from Pearl Valley Golf & Country Estate. “Various member initiatives and activities saw our Captain’s Charity raise a sum of R135,000.00 during 2014-2015,” says Gawie Marx, General Manager, Pearl Valley. “In turn, we matched this amount rand-for-rand resulting in the R 270,000.00 donated.” Focused on the provision of palliative care in the district, The Drakenstein Palliative Hospice provides care for as many as 440 patients at any given time. “Without Pearl’s Valley’s donation, it would have been impossible to continue servicing the entire district.” It has been an absolute lifesaver that could not have come at a better time, providing us with a reprieve for the rest of this year,” says Elizabeth Scrimgeour, Executive Officer, Drakenstein Palliative Hospice. “With so many worthwhile causes in our area, it is often difficult to decide which ones to support,” continues Marx. However, Pearl Valley was especially touched by the needs of the hospice and the incredible work they do. “We salute both Drakenstein Palliative Hospice and its carers for their outstanding contribution and commitment to the quality of lives of so many within our community.”

The Stellenbosch City Orchestra (SCO) conducted a performance of Andrew Lloyd Webber: Celebrating 50 years on Broadway at the Laurent, Lourensford Estate, just outside Somerset West recently. The event provided great entertainment for the audience who enjoyed every moment of the show amidst the magnificent mountains and vineyards. Earlier this year the newly formed Stellenbosch City Orchestra made its Debut under the baton of Matie alumnus, Paul Zuilenburg at a jam-packed Oude Libertas Amphitheatre in Stellenbosch. The Stellenbosch City Orchestra is based on the hugely successful model of Paul Zuilenburg’s Bloemfontein City Orchestra where amateur and professional musicians play alongside each other in a full scale Symphony Orchestra. The 50 piece Stellenbosch City Orchestra presented two shows at the Lourensford Wine Estate featuring Paul Loeb van Zuilenburg, the conductor, vocal stars Corneil Muller and Caroline Grace with Nic de Jager, well known Afrikaans actor as narrator. During the performance Nic de Jager described the great success that Andrew Lloyd Webber achieved within the musical theatre with several of his musicals performed for more than a decade both in West End and on Broadway. Andrew Lloyd Webber composed 13 musicals, a song cycle, a set of number of honours, including knighthood followed by 7 Tony Awards, 3 Grammy Awards, 4 Ivor Novello Awards, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. Truly Amazing!

Chrisna’s Olives Meet High Standards Chrisna was first introduced to olives when her landlady went on vacation, leaving her with a few buckets of fermenting olives and the responsibility of taking care of something she knew nothing about – turning it into a successful boutique olive business. At the time of Chrisna’s engagement in the Olive Industry, she realized that the local market was almost non-existent. The only olive trees in the surrounding area were those planted by farmers as windbreaks. With a ladder in the one hand and a bucket in the other, Chrisna went out to harvest olives in the windbreaks. She returned home with her harvest, poured it into a bath, added water and salt and for ten months the second bathroom of her home became the fermentation room. As the harvest grew she was forced to seek alternative fermentation facilities and her outdoor pool was the next best option. It was not long before the pool also became too small and by 2008 she was forced to move - relocating Chrisna’s Olives from her garage to Delvera Farm, 10km outside Stellenbosch on the way to Paarl on the R44, where she has an open plan production area and a shop where one can taste all the products. The European Influence Chrisna visited Italy and France to obtain a better understanding of the European olive culture, and was totally in awe of their fresh food markets and the abundance of different olives on offer. “I could not wait to get back home and expand my own olive range,” she says. Her product range is well selected and meets the high European standard making it a product par excellence. What happens to an olive before it goes into the jar? An olive picked from the tree is inedible, therefore olives are exposed to a lactic acid fermentation process, that can take up to ten months of regularly stirring and changing of brine. During this time they loose their bitterness and become the plump, good tasting olive that we all enjoy so much.

The Natural Range includes Kalamata, Mission, Nocellara, Manzanilla and Sevillano Olives, while the hand Stuffed Olive Range have natural stuffing such as cured lemon rind, pimentos, almonds, elephant garlic, blue cheese, anchovies and the big mouthful; garlic stuffed olive inside Peppadews™. The Range of Pastes consists of; Black Olive Tapenade (with anchovies, capers and garlic), Smoked Olive Paste (made with hickory smoked olives), Mediterranean Olive Paste (with olives, feta cheese, sun dried tomatoes and lots of fresh basil) Moroccan Olive Paste (with cumin and chilli), and Green Olive Pesto (with almonds, lemon rind and rocket), all of which taste absolutely phenomenal as a snack on freshly baked bread. No olive range can be complete without Cold pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil and to make the perfect salad dressing combo, Chrisna makes homemade flavoured vinegars. These include the Oil Free Raspberry, Oil Free Lavender and Oil Free Bulgarian Rose Petal Dressings. For these Homemade Dressings Chrisna uses naturally fermented grape vinegar, soaking the fresh flowers or berries for a few weeks to extract all the flavours and adding sugar to enhance the floral and berry notes. Accompanied by a good extra virgin olive oil, these dressings can change a very ordinary salad into an interesting and unique taste sensation. No steak should be served without one of Chrisna’s lovely olive, garlic and herb rubs or special spiced salt. Why the Green and Black Olive Cultivars Olives ripen from March till June. A green olive is an unripe olive and will turn ripe and blacken if left on the tree. Some cultivars are more tasty when picked and used green and others like the familiar, but scarce Kalamata and the more plentiful Mission olive are traditionally used black. Some of the green cultivars they use include the familiar Manzanilla, nutty and crunchy Noccelaras and the huge crispy Sevillanos. Oil cultivars like Frontoio, Corotina and Leccino are picked green or half ripe to give special characteristics to their oils. These are pressed within 24 hours of harvesting to ensure a top quality and highly valued extra virgin oil.

“There are faster ways to cure olives, but we choose to go the slow and traditional way and that normally shows in the end result,” says Chrisna. Only after Chrisna has tasted her fermented olives and found them to be acceptable and edible, does she commence with the next phase. Some of these olives are bottled immediately, while the pips of others are removed and stuffed with natural ingredients. Others get marinated and a lot get turned into pastes. A Niche Product Over the years Chrisna developed her own recipes to create high quality olive products that is different from and superior to the olives available in any of the larger commercial stores. Chrisna’s Olives produces three ranges of olives – the Signature Range, the Natural Range, the Stuffed Olive Range, and a big range of Pastes as well as olive oil, vinegars and olive rubs and sprinkles. The Signature Range is by far the most popular and include marinated olives to the likes of Garlic and Herb Olives, Olive Medley, Spanish Green Olives, Chili Kalamata Olives, Smoked Olives, Mediterranean Olives, and Roasted Olives.

Not to be missed facts - All Chrisna's Olives are grown locally. They are proudly South African! - They grow most of their herbs in their own herb garden - without pesticides. - They have a negative carbon footprint. - They do not use any chemicals or preservatives in their products. - They recycle and re-use. - They make compost and line the paths in their herb garden with olive pips. - They have an online shop, and their products make very exiting corporate gifts. Shopping for the Chrisna’s Olive Product Range Today Chrisna’s Olives regularly attends high end farmer’s markets in and around Cape Town, Stellenbosch and the Cape Winelands, where she sells her olives to many happy customers as well as excited newcomers. She also invites the public to her open plan production area and to the shop where one can taste all these wonderful olive products. Just recently they established an online Shopping Basket where it is easy to order and goods will be delivered to your doorstep. The Newspaper was greatly impressed by the array of fine products, the firmness of the olives, but when the Moroccan Paste was applied to steak it took us by surprise – this is a gastronomic experience not to be missed! A few products were tested by The Newspaper and Chrisna’s Olive products are outstanding and highly recommended! Food Safety Ninja Born and raised in the Northern suburbs of Cape Town, Bennii van Rooy studied Food Technology, graduated in 1997, and returned to complete her BTech degree in Quality Management in 2009 at the Cape Town University of Technology (CPUT).

The Wacky Wine Weekend will embrace the usual line-up of fun-filled activities, for example: ‘meet-the-winemaker’ tastings, brandy tours and tastings, river cruises, barrel tastings, cheese- and olive tastings, a simulated rodeo bull, a mountain bike challenge and local performing artists. And while the adults are revelling in these activities, there will, as always, be a wide range of children’s activities including: fishing, jumping castles, pony rides, tractor trips and jungle gym. For more information visit www.wackywineweekend.com

According to Bennii, Food Technology chose her. “I applied for Medical Technology and in those days you could add a second choice. The Medical Technology course was already full and Food Technology chose me.” “I started working at Stellenbosch Vineyards for my practical and after 6 months they appointed me permanently. I was promoted from laboratory assistant to Risk and Compliance Manager in a few years. It was during this time that I discovered that writing, implementing and managing food safety systems was a gift I had.” During her time as Risk and Compliance Manager, she was approached by other wine estates to assist with documentation.

Music festival

“The Food Safety Ninja came as an evolvement of my services after almost a decade of providing this service to the industry.”

ClemenGold and Zandvliet Wine Estate teamed up to ensure that the Robertson Wine Valley’s Wacky Wine Weekend will be a colossal, fun-filled event.

With regards to her choice of company name, Bennii explains that it happened completely by accident. “One morning a client needed to see me urgently. I had just finished a CrossFit training session and decided to go in my training gear. After sorting the problem, my client called me The Food Safety Ninja, and that is how it started. I have an active sporting life, so self-employment was a natural progression as it affords me the opportunity to manage my time. Chris Barnard, oorgeplant is?

Douvoordag - Quality Butchery Douvoordag Slagtery started way back in 1995 as a small business operating from a two roomed butchery with a cooler room and four employees. It was the need of “Koup Lamb” in and around Cape Town that beame the back bone of the Douvoordag Slagtery. No better “lamb” can be produced as “Koup Lamb” and this vision Joubert Esterhuizen grabbed with open arms.

Now in its 27th year, the free-to-enter competition has become South Africa’s pre-eminent entrepreneurial platform, and embraces local entrepreneurship by providing an opportunity to showcase business achievements and elevate the entrepreneur’s profile, as well as their profits. Christo Botes, spokesperson for the Sanlam/Business Partners Entrepreneur of the Year® competition, says that the competition serves as a promotional tool to not only create awareness for entrepreneurship in South Africa, but also for local entrepreneurs to generate a credible reputation amongst competitors.

Since 2013 Eternal Child has already established an entire lounge area at Foodlovers

Recently Douvoordag Slagterye left the Willowbridge Slow Food Market premises in Durbanville and opened a branch in Bellville. They now have two fully operative butcheries. The Somerset West butchery will be celebrating its second year in business.

Whisky Live Showroom Brings Finest Whiskies

A cannon firing will take place at the Afrikaanse Taalmonument in Paarl on the last Saturday of every month – part of a series of firings to be held, in collaboration with CAOSA (Cannon Association of South Africa).

The Cape Town edition of the Whisky Live Showroom will take place from 18–20 June 2015 at The Lookout, V & A Waterfront, bringing this popular celebration of the golden dram back to Cape Town at an exciting new venue.

The firing includes a short talk on the history of South Africa’s cannons and the VOC cannon signal system, as well as a demonstration of the use of all the loading gear. The cannon is loaded with gunpowder (no projectile). The cannoneer will ask a question about the cannon’s history and a member of the public who answers correctly, will get the opportunity to fire the cannon. CAOSA issues a certificate as proof that this person has fired the cannon at the Taalmonument.

This intimate showcase of over 100 expressions of the world’s finest whiskies, including newcomers to the Showroom Tomatin and Smokehead, expressions of The Glenlivet, Bains Cape Mountain Whisky, Kavalan, The Macallan, Scottish Leader’s newly launched Signature and Glenfiddich among others, makes it possible for fans of the precious dram and curious newcomers alike to sample and purchase their favourite whiskies in an exclusive, intimate setting. Innis & Gunn, a craft beer made in whisky barrels, will offer an intriguing interlude in whisky tasting too. There are limited tickets available for the events, and whisky lovers are

encouraged to book their tickets online in advance to make sure that they don’t miss out, especially following 2014’s sold-out event in Cape Town. Whisky Live Festival promotes responsible drinking. No persons under the age of 18 years will be allowed into the Showrooms. For more information visit www.whiskylivefestival.co.za

Hermanus FynArts 2015 Visitors to Hermanus FynArts 2015 will be treated to an eclectic mix of some of the best in a range of South African arts. The event, a fusion of Arts Fest and Winter School, now in its third year, will run from 5-16 June. The Opening Concert will feature Ammiel and Avigail Bushakevitz (born in Jerusalem, raised in South Africa and now living in Europe) as soloists with Camerata Tinta Barocca, a Cape Town based baroque ensemble. Violinist Avigail won first prize at the Unisa National Strings Competition, and numerous other awards, while Pianist Ammiel drew international attention in 2013 when he was the first recipient of the Richard Wagner prize. Cannoneer Riaan Conradie, Chris Alexander, Marco and Neil Truter

The cannon, a Half Pounder (1770 Armstrong), is fired at 12:00 from the Garden Theatre stage. According to cannoneer Riaan Conradie, who is in charge of the demonstrations at the Taalmonument, South Africa has one of the biggest varieties of muzzle loading cannons in the world. “Unfortunately many of these cannons have been grossly neglected and some even destroyed. It is CAOSA’s mission to research these cannons and the VOC cannon signal system, as well as to track, restore and display the cannons to preserve their heritage for future generations. The association has already found, measured and registered more than 1 000 of them in the DURR record of South African Muzzle Loading Cannons.” “We are excited about extending our public firings to include the Taalmonument, as it is an important destination for South Africans who have a passion for our country’s history. In our talk we also refer to the Six pounder cannon on Paarl Mountain, and other cannons in Drakenstein.”

“Three professors on Three Pianos” is a première for Hermanus FynArts. Francois du Toit will perform with Franklin Larey and Albie van Schalkwyk, who has transcribed music for three pianos. Albie, is one of South Africa's finest chamber musicians and music educators, Francois is a highly regarded soloist, while Franklin, has won several awards. Professor Kamal Khan, also from UCT, will direct a “Festival of Italian Music” at FynArts 2015 with some of his most promising opera students. From this year Hermanus FynArts will recognise the diverse origins of immigrants to South Africa. The programme will therefore include a number of events of one country's contribution to the arts in general and kicks off with the Italian Connection not only in art, but also in food, wine, vintage films and music.

In 1980 award-winning South African winemaker Giorgio Dalla Cia produced one of South Africa's first Bordeaux-style wines, Meerlust Rubicon in his own Grappa distillery in Stellenbosch in 1996. As part of the “Wine Plus” series of tutored tastings, festival goers will have the opportunity to taste and appreciate this famous Italian fortified wine with the master himself. Apart from celebrating this Italian art connection, eleven art galleries in Hermanus will each host an exhibition during FynArts 2015 including the Old Synagogue, and three hotels. In addition, there will be wine tasting and art exhibitions at a number of participating wine farms in the Hemel en Aarde Valley. One of the highlights is the Tondi Exhibition of the finalists in the Tollman Bouchard Finlayson competition where circular art works are displayed on the heads of barrels in the cellar at Bouchard Finlayson. The fine art of food will be celebrated throughout the festival, including a gala dinner at Bona Dea, a Pop-up Festival Kitchen at the Windsor Hotel where top chefs will give two daily demonstrations. In keeping with the Italian Connection some of these will have a definite Italian flavour. For more information visit www.hermanusfynarts.co.za

Largest Wedding Show is Back! The South African Wedding Show – the country’s largest and most talked about bridal show is launching again in Cape Town on 6 June 2015 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. More than 200,000 people are married every year in South Africa, each one looking to create a special and memorable day. The SA Wedding Show has become the largest event of its kind and has worked hard to develop interesting lifestyle categories that educate and inspire visitors. Every couple want their big day to stand out and be remembered and the organizers have planned a show unlike any other wedding show. For Him - To ensure the groom doesn’t recall an urgent game on SuperSport and beg to be left at home, the SA Wedding Show has created the Men’s Zone – cars: from vintage to Harley Davidson, fashion, cool ideas for a bachelor party and suggestions for a honeymoon destination.

Aloe Ferox Gelly has the ability to transport moisture to below the epidermis to hydrate dry skin. Anti-bacterial and antifungal properties helps to accelerate the reproduction of the cells responsible for the formulation of collagen which is vital for skin strength and elasticity. A good skin care regime should include anti-oxidants that prevent free radical damage. These include Vitamin E, Herbal extracts and plant derived oils and butters. All of these super anti-oxidants are included in the MRL Creations and MRL Private Collection Skin Care Range. MRL Creations philosophy is a focus on the natural. Wherever possible we select naturally derived, organic raw materials of the purest standard in preference to those of a petrochemical origin. Their range includes: Hand and Nail Cream, Body Butter, Bath & Shower Gel, Bath Salt and Body Lotion. Exciting extensions to this range are currently in Research & Development stage and are planned for later this year. SOUTH AFRICANS

SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR HEALTH Although most South Africans are aware of at least some of the health risks associated with smoking tobacco, this does not prevent an estimated six million people from lighting up every day. Dr Frans Skosana, a physician who practises at Netcare Olivedale Hospital, says that, although medical studies repeatedly show that regular smoking is more likely than not to negatively impact our health at some point in our lives, we choose to ignore the dangers and continue with the habit. “The truth is that while some individuals who smoke live to an old age, cigarette smoke contains more than 4 000 chemicals, many of which are toxic, and these negatively impact the health of most smokers at one point or another. In other words, if you are a moderate to heavy smoker, the chances are high that it is going to make you ill,” says Dr Skosana. Smoking is not only linked to lung cancer, but also increases the risks of developing some 50 other kinds of diseases, including, heart disease, stroke and colon cancer. The World Health Organization (WHO) observes that smoking negatively impacts young people's physical fitness in terms of both performance and endurance even in those trained in competitive sports.

R600M HEALTH TECH PARK TO DRIVE SA’S MEDICAL INNOVATION

South Africa’s world-class medical innovations have gained international acclaim with the Western Cape, the site of the ground-breaking medical procedures such as the world’s first successful heart and penis transplants. There is also massive potential in the medical tourism industry with a specific focus on Africa. South Africa’s medical equipment export industry is worth R1 billion, the imports are valued at R11 billion. These figures, contained in a Deliotte study commissioned by the Department of Trade and Industry, show that our trade deficit is increasing sharply and currently stands at over R9 billion, of the products investigated in the study. “It is our goal to harness our strengths to ensure that the production and use of local content is prioritised, says Economic Opportunities Minister Alan Winde. The Western Cape is poised to drive health innovation. The majority of the country’s medical device manufacturers (43%) are based in the province. The Cape Health Technology Park, set to be located in Pinelands, presents a significant opportunity to support health innovation. The Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism, in partnership with the National Department of Science and Technology, will invest up to R600 million in the facility. This health technology hub will bring together research and development firms, universities, academic hospitals, government and the private sector to drive innovation. The project is moving to the next stage of feasibility and preparation work for land acquisition has started. The department is confident this collaboration will lead to the development of new firms and intellectual properties which will establish our region as a globally competitive centre of health innovation.

Werner Teichert, a clinical psychologist at Netcare Olivedale Hospital, explains that tobacco contains nicotine, which is a highly addictive drug, and many people consequently have difficulty giving it up. Regular smokers soon start to crave nicotine when they are without it. The good news is that while smoking is a tough habit to kick, and giving up requires commitment, there are a number of programmes and nicotine replacement products that can assist one to kick the habit. A number of highly effective medications are also available on prescription. The withdrawal from nicotine is strongest for the first few days after giving up and this is often when people relapse. However, the withdrawal symptoms start to subside, and the chances of beating the habit increase exponentially with each passing day. You soon start to enjoy the many benefits of being smoke free including having more energy. Teichert affirms that there are numerous benefits to stopping smoking. A few of these include: blood pressure and pulse rate return to normal within hours, blood circulation improves, reduction in chances of developing lung cancer, heart disease or suffering a stroke, reduction in feelings of anxiety and restlessness, improved concentration, better sleep, and Lung function.

Ask the captain

Wish you were here …

Airline pilots get asked all sorts of questions from straightforward enquiries about how long it takes to fly to London to the more obscure, such as how much paint is used on the A380?

Jenny Ellinas from Cypriot Realty is currently in Cyprus with clients on the first of her property inspection tours for 2015. The tours are an ideal opportunity for South Africans wanting to explore a Plan B (property ownership, permanent residency or citizenship) in an English-speaking country in Europe without immigrating immediately.

Here are some of the more interesting posers that curious customers have put to British Airways flight crew and some expert answers from Captain Steve Allright, a training captain with over 11 000 flying hours. How do jet engines work? It’s actually fairly simple. Air is sucked in at the front of the engine and then squeezed through a series of rotor blades into a combustion chamber where aviation fuel is added and the mixture ignited. The air is blown out the back of the engine faster than it entered at the front, causing the thrust that moves the aircraft forward. How do aircraft steer on the ground? When taxiing the aircraft is controlled by a tiller which moves the nose wheel. The pilots can also control the nose wheel by moving the rudder pedals.

Captain Steve Allright

The 5-day property inspection trips that Jenny arranges are for clients who are serious about investigating the property opportunities in Cyprus; and as her guests, each couple is hosted at the magnificent 5-star Coral Beach Hotel in Paphos. She has arranged a special rate at the hotel as well as transfers from and to the airport; and these tours are a really good way for her clients to explore if Cyprus is for them. Jenny says, “I just know you will love the social and aesthetic elements of the country; Cyprus is absolutely beautiful! As my guests you will enjoy true Cypriot hospitality, I will show you some of my favourite places; and you'll get a real feeling of the solid investment opportunities there and of course the prospect to secure permanent residency in Europe. There is plenty of time to take a few dips in The Med, enjoy the magnificent sunsets and to have some relaxation on the beautiful beaches.”

What does place doors to automatic and cross check mean? This is a standard instruction and means that the crew arm the inflatable slides so that these will automatically deploy should the door be opened. The crew members on each side of the aircraft check the opposite door to make sure it is set properly.

Why do my ears pop during takeoff and landing? It’s to do with the pressurisation of the aircraft. As it climbs the amount of oxygen in the air decreases. In order to keep the oxygen at an acceptable level to breathe normally, the aircraft is pressurised. This is done automatically during the climb using air from the engines and air conditioning machines. As the air pressure changes in the cabin, the air in your inner ear has to adjust to the pressure around you. For most people this isn’t a problem, but if you are suffering from a cold or you inner-ear is inflamed it can cause discomfort or even some pain. The easiest way to equalise the pressure is to close your mouth, pinch your nose and breathe out hard. If you are unable to equalise during the decent, don’t worry; your ears will naturally adjust some time after landing. Are most landings done using the autopilot? Actually about 98 per cent of the landings we do are flown manually to ensure the flight crews maintain their skill levels. The remaining two percent are autolands which are usually only used for landing in fog or for practicing the slightly different procedures for automatic landings.

Cyprus currently offers the easiest way to acquire permanent residency in Europe, with the fewest restrictions. It is the only English-speaking country in the EU offering residency without requiring that you live there for a minimum prescribed number of days per year, nor dictating that you pay a minimum amount of tax annually. Another benefit is that your residency permit in Cyprus automatically renews; and it is for life! Kirstenbosch Receive Silver Gilt

Despite Feature Plants not Released from customs in Time When the team from South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI-Kirstenbosch) at the Chelsea Flower Show heard the judges’ decision, they knew that they had beaten all the odds. This year, the exhibit was awarded a Silver Gilt for its 40th exhibit at the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show (CFS) in London. There were some tense moments when it looked like the stand may not be completed in the allotted time as only part of the consignment had been released from customs, and then not the feature plants. But it was a story of camaraderie once it became clear that the whole consignment was not going to get there. Volunteer Jenny Badenhorst and Jo Lankester walked the show to see who had the appropriate plants and with warmth and generosity other exhibitors rallied around offering whatever was required to fill the gaps.

Share Cape Town’s unique biodiversity The residents of Cape Town share this city with a range of unique plants and animals, many of which are found nowhere else on the planet. In terms of the diversity, density and number of endemic plant species, Cape Town is recognised as one of the most exceptional places for environmental growth in the world. However, the pride of being a capital location for the flourishing of these species is accompanied by a heavy sense of responsibility as Cape Town is one of the most threatened areas of plant and animal life in the world. Of the 53 nationally critically endangered vegetation types in South Africa, ten are found within the City with three of these species occurring nowhere else on earth. ‘We have an enormous responsibility to ensure that our globally important biodiversity is conserved and utilized in a sustainable manner’, says the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Environmental and Spatial Planning, Councillor Johan van der Merwe.

While still calling the exhibit “a celebration of 40 years” and despite not being able to showcase the feature plants, the generosity of the other exhibitors made up for some of the disappointment. Plants were donated from Kientzler in Germany, and other contributions came from, amongst others, Prince Harry's Lesotho garden which donated kniphofias and aloes; Australia donated proteas, aloes, polygala... and the use of their forklift to assist. France donated juncea and grasses. "It was a race against time" said David Davidson, designer, "we advised the judges of our predicament and these factors were taken into account when judging." The judges make their way around the more than 550 stands that make up the show. Then it is celebrity time as London’s rich and famous wander the show stopping here and there for a word and a photograph. Finally it is time for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her entourage to tour the show, before this preview day comes to an end and exhibitors are left to wait anxiously for results. The awards are revealed and it is a mad dash to get in to see whether (or not) dreams have come true. This is the scene every year for the team who put together their exhibit at this ‘Olympics’ of flower shows and, in a year that has seen Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden win several major awards, it was with great joy and jubilation that the SANBI-Kirstenbosch 40th entry should notch up a Silver Gilt – the same as they achieved in 2014. This 40th display was a treasure trove of information and colour and a trip down memory lane for those who are regular visitors and contributors to the show.

Eco–Logic Champions of 2015 Entries are now open for The Eco-Logic Awards 2015, which recognise South Africa’s environmental champions and reward outstanding achievements. Organised annually since 2010 by The Enviropaedia, the Awards invite entries from large and small businesses, municipalities, groups and individuals who are leading the way in environmental excellence and innovation. David Parry-Davies, the force behind The Enviropaedia and Eco-Logic Awards, explains that the awards are unusual because the judging criteria are about quality not quantity. This levels the playing field between small initiatives and large corporates. This year, a new category will be included: Business - Green Economy. This category seeks to identify a business that build and supports the Green Economy in South Africa. The other 2015 Award categories are: Water Conservation, Energy Efficiency, Eco-Innovation, Transport Award, Recycling, Biodiversity, Climate Change, Municipalities, Youth, Eco-Community, Eco-Angel, Eco-Warrior and Lifetime Achievement awards. Sarah Farrell, Marketing Manager for Cape Town’s Hotel Verde, which has won awards for energy and water-saving, says that winning an Eco-Logic Award has improved staff morale, increased the hotel’s environmental credibility and contributed to increased occupancy. Winners will be announced at a Glamorously Green Award Ceremony, to be held in Cape Town during October. Guests include environmental movers and shakers, thought leaders, celebrities, sponsors and top business executives, government and municipal representatives, previous winners and 2015 finalists. ’Biodiversity is integral to our city. Through time and development, it has become woven within our urban fabric. We have so many incredible plants and animals and scenic landscapes all around us. On our doorsteps are mountains, spectacular fynbos, leopards, flamingos, porcupines, otters, and a host of marine animals, such as orcas in the bay. We need to take care of this extraordinary environment that we share, and in order to do this government and residents have to work together’, says Councillor van der Merwe. Stewardship is one of the mechanisms the City uses to conserve land. This concept is about empowering communities and putting the management of biodiversity in the hands of the people. It is beneficial to the private landowner who is offered the tools and skills to make this conservation possible. To date, the City together with its partners has secured 300 ha of land for conservation purposes through its stewardship programme. The City has established a number of partnerships with organisations such as South African National Parks (SANParks), CapeNature, World Wide Fund for Nature, Wilderness Foundation, Biosphere Reserves Companies, local communities and is conjunctively working towards ensuring a sustainable city with well managed natural habitats. Education is also seen as a vital component of biodiversity conservation. School groups from Cape Town and surrounding areas visit various nature reserves to learn about biodiversity as well as sustainable living. A range of public events, including trail runs, weddings, star grazing, and bird ringing to name a few are held throughout the year at these reserves.

Capetonians can get involved various ways, including the following: visit a local nature reserve, join an environmental club, plant local plants in your garden (these are beautiful, water-wise and will support biodiversity and will also attract local wildlife, such as birds, into your garden), report non-indigenous invasive plants and animals and start an organic food garden (which doesn’t use pesticides) at your home, at your school or in your community. “Be aware that we share our city with many wild animals and always treat them with respect and care.”

Explore Madagascar with Riaan & Andy He loves challenges says ex-cricketer and master distiller of Three Ships Whisky Andy Watts, so when the opportunity presented itself to go on an extraordinary journey with adventurer Riaan Manser he didn’t hesitate for a moment, but headed for the nearest beach to start honing his kayaking skills. Riaan is no stranger to Madagascar. In July 2009 he achieved world first when he circumnavigated the island in a kayak, alone and unaided. “The journey of 5000 km which took eleven months, was extremely demanding, both physically and mentally,” says Riaan. “I had to overcome not only extreme loneliness, but had to face treacherous conditions such as cyclones, pounding surf, an unrelenting sun and up to ten hours of rowing. “However, I also had incredible encounters with marine life – from humpback whales breaching meters away to giant leatherback turtles gliding alongside. I even had my kayak rammed by sharks! I really look forward to sharing this adventure with Andy and the winner of the competition. It won’t be as extreme but certainly an experience that many would like to add to their bucket list.” Riaan and Andy are kindred spirits. Both push the boundaries in their individual fields, with ground-breaking results. Riaan has achieved many world firsts as an adventurer while Andy has created many firsts for the South African whisky industry such as winning the title World’s Best Blended Whisky for the Three Ships Premium Select 5 Year Old at the 2012 World Whisky Awards.

Currently Andy is receiving some helpful tips from Riaan as he prepares for the upcoming expedition, dividing his time between mountain biking, his first love, and kayaking on the dam at the James Sedgwick Distillery in Wellington, home to Three Ships. Apart from the kayaking, Andy also looks forward in pairing his whiskies to especially a few laokes, the quintessential rice dishes of Malagasy cuisine. DHL Stormers & adidas hand over R100 000 to women's charity The DHL Stormers and adidas, together with their fans, have raised a collective R100 000 for a women’s charity in their recent Storm in a Teacup Mother’s Day campaign. On the 9th of May, the day before Mother’s Day, the DHL Stormers took on the Brumbies at DHL Newlands in once-off jerseys adorned with pink roses in honour of their mothers and the women of South Africa. For two days after the nail-biting match, where the DHL Stormers beat the Brumbies by 25 points to 24, five of the players’ jerseys went on auction on Twitter, with all proceeds being pledged to Sisters Incorporated, a charity supporting abused women and their children. “We auctioned our match day Mother’s Day jerseys on Twitter and were overwhelmed by the response that we got from our fans,” says DHL Stormers Captain, Duane Vermeulen. “The five jerseys raised R78 000 for Sisters Incorporated and we are proud to be able to make a difference to the lives of the women and children who call the charity home.” In addition to the R78 000 raised through the Twitter auction, adidas, the DHL Stormers’ technical and apparel sponsors, has pledged a further R22 000 to bring the donation to R100 000.

“It was a real storm in a teacup with the special edition jersey creating quite a stir on social media and amongst fans. Whether you loved it or hated it, the jersey created great conversation and

achieved its aim of paying tribute to mothers and women and raising an amazing amount of money for Sisters Incorporated,” says Adrian de Souza, Head of Rugby at adidas South Africa. Sisters Incorporated is a charity based in Cape Town which was established in 1959. It acts as a safe house for abused women and their children and helps the women get back on their feet by supporting them and helping them with training and skills development.

The organisation also offers a safe place to call home, counselling and access to medical care and schooling for the children. The Twitter auction included the jerseys of Duane Vermeulen, Siya Kolisi, Damian de Allende, Nic Groom and Schalk Burger using the @adidasZA handle and the players’ individual bidding hashtags. “Besides the money that we raised, the Storm in a Teacup campaign also aimed to say thank you to all the mothers and women of South Africa, including our own moms, and it was a real honour to play in a jersey inspired by the women in our lives,” concludes Vermeulen. A limited number of replica jerseys are available at selected sports retail stores in the Western Cape.
