Newmark Hotels Scoops Multiple Awards

Boutique hotel group, Newmark Hotels, Reserves & Lodges, has scooped a total of ten TripAdvisor Certificates of Excellence and one sought after Hall of Fame award.

TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence awards are based upon consumer reviews and take into account the quality, quantity and most recent reviews and opinions submitted by travellers over a 12-month period.

The ten Newmark properties awarded are: The Dock House Boutique Hotel & Spa, the Victoria & Alfred Hotel and the Queen Victoria Hotel in the heart of the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town; and, also in the Waterfront, Dash restaurant at the Queen Victoria Hotel and Oyo restaurant at the Victoria & Alfred Hotel; Nkomazi Game Reserve in Mpumalanga; The Five-Star Drostdy Hotel in Graaff-Reinet; Motswari Private Game Reserve in the Timbavati – part of the Greater Kruger National Park;

The Nyungwe Forest Lodge in Rwanda and finally Coral Lodge 15.41 in Northern Mozambique.

Another coup is that Newmark’s Victoria & Alfred Hotel has been included in the TripAdvisor Hall of Fame, which is a new award for properties that have won the Certificate of Excellence for five years consecutively. This is some achievement because only nine percent of total winners qualify for the Certificate of Excellence Hall of Fame by consistently doing well over five years.

Draft Events By-law Approved The main purpose of revising the City’s Events By-law was to ensure alignment with the Safety at Sports and Recreation Events Act (SSREA), which is national legislation. The SSREA has a major impact on the role and processes of the City and event organisers in approving event permits and places a strong emphasis on event planning in order to reduce risk.

The SSREA specifies the requirements, while the Events By-law is complementary to ensure that all essential and emergency services as defined and required by the Act, and that must be provided by the City, are in alignment.

The purpose of making amendments to the existing by-law was: - To make provision for the appointment of an event safety office. The safety officer will be required to be on site for the duration of the event, as stipulated in the Occupational Health and Safety Act. - To provide clear consequences for offending event organisers and event owners.

It must be noted that the responsibility for the enforcement of laws remains the responsibility of the South African Police Service and other agencies such as Metro Police and Law Enforcement. These agencies have the authority to halt an event should there be non-compliance with the by-law.

- To ensure that the event organiser provides evidence to the City Manager regarding appropriate indemnity cover and public liability insurance.

Planting Legacy Trees at Newly Opened Primary School On World Environment Day, Friday 5th June, students from Van Wyksvlei Primary School, a newly opened Government school in Wellington, planted trees with Miss Earth South Africa (MESA) Regional Finalist, Ms Sandra Badenhorst, as well as the Lima Rural Development Foundation and the Western Cape Community Work Programme.

Initiated by the United Nations Environment Programme; World Environment Day is annually celebrated to raise global awareness about protecting nature and planet Earth.

The Miss Earth South Africa programme, also aims to help create an awareness of sustainable development, our environment, wildlife and the conservation of our natural legacy in South Africa, and ultimately the preservation of Mother Earth.

Sandra helped to identify Van Wyksvlei Primary School (VWPS) with the assistance of Trevor Johnson, Site Facilitator of the Community Work Programme (CWP) in the Drakenstein Municipality. The CWP, sponsored by the Department of Co-operative Governance, has a strong presence in Drakenstein, and has become known for uplifting communities and schools through various areas of development.

Fifteen trees, indigenous to the Western Cape, were donated to VWPS by the CWP team. Mr Bailey, interim principle, acknowledged the importance of trees in a school environment.

- To amend the provisions relating to offences and penalties. Once the by-law has been adopted, a suggested schedule of fines will be sent to the Magistrate. With regard to spot fines, the Department of Justice has increased the limit to R15 000 and this cannot be increased further.

‘The City hosts a number of local community events and international events. We are bound by national legislation to ensure that all events comply with the requirements stipulated in the SSREA and that the by-law is aligned with this Act. Event organisers are advised to apply for event permits within the specified time-frames and to please ensure compliance with the conditions of their permits,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Economic Development, Councillor Garreth Bloor.

The grade 6 and 7 learners were chosen to participate in the planting activation.

Sandra presented an outdoor lesson on the importance of trees to our environment as well as to our very existence as human beings. Thereafter, the students were divided into groups and energetically planted the trees, proudly naming each one of the fifteen.

Sandra added that it has been an honour being selected for the MESA Leadership and Empowerment Programme, as it provides an excellent platform to further explore our roles on this planet.

“We all have a part to play in guarding our environment, for ourselves, and more importantly, the future generations. Every person has the power to make a positive impact,” added Sandra.

Open Door Restaurant, the latest venture by restaurateur and sommelier Neil Grant and business partner Barry Engelbrecht of Burrata (Eat Out Italian Restaurant of the Year 2013) is now open in Constantia on the former River Café premises at Constantia Uitsig.

StreetSmart South Africa, a community initiative that has raised nearly R10 million in partnership with restaurants for organisations effecting social normalisation for the country’s most vulnerable children, turns 10 this year.

The existing restaurant space has been opened up and stylishly revamped to offer several dining areas with menus that will cater for all palates and appetites. With a spectacular Art Deco inspired bar at the centre, there is a dedicated area to suit every occasion.

Open Door features a bright lunch and breakfast room leading onto a spacious wooden deck, as well as a cool lounge terrace for drinks and nibbles.

“Going forward, we will focus on our organisation's long term plan of expanding the national footprint while still remaining locally relevant in the areas where StreetSmart currently operates: Cape Town, Franschhoek, Helderberg, Stellenbosch, Swellendam, Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, Oudtshoorn, Paarl, Johannesburg and Pretoria.”

StreetSmart’s impact is in providing an additional income stream for existing and well-run beneficiary organisations. This assists social workers, and supports and enables skills training and job creation that directly and positively affect the lives of street children.

A sophisticated dining room with elegant banquette seating accommodates guests for dinner. Foodies will take delight in the wonderful ‘kitchen table’, a unique feature of the main dining room, where guests can dine next to the open plan kitchen in full view of the chefs.

Adjacent to the main dining room and tucked away in the space that was once a wine shop, a multi-functional dining area is perfect for private dinners, wine events and functions.

The menu is designed by Executive Chef Annemarie Steenkamp, who is the driving force behind the delectable food at sister restaurants Burrata and Bocca.

This time around, the cuisine deviates from Italian and can be described as ‘modern contemporary’. The menu offers exciting, stylish and sophisticated fare. A caféstyle menu will be available for lunch, including some creative, wholesome kiddies options.

Moving into the chic dining room at night, the menu becomes a little more ‘serious’, to complement Neil Grant’s first love, an interesting wine list of some 130 wines housed in a 1000-bottle, temperature-controlled wine cellar.

Some dishes on the inaugural menu include Lemon butter poached crayfish tail, Braised lamb neck with Jerusalem artichoke, and Venison sirloin with orange sweet potato, but expect changes to the menu as seasons and creativity warrant!

To celebrate 10 years of making a difference, StreetSmart held a birthday party for children from TLC Outreach Projects, a current beneficiary operational in the Cape Town area. Africa Melanie, popular radio personality, was the master of ceremony at this fun-filled party, which was attended by several StreetSmart board members.

StreetSmart participating restaurants display a StreetSmart card on the table informing patrons that a voluntary R5.00 donation will be added to their bill. They will have the option to give more than R5.00 (or not give at all). This donation is registered separately in the restaurant till and StreetSmart collects the funds.

Diners should see their donation reflected on their restaurant bill. Every cent raised in StreetSmart restaurants goes to carefully selected beneficiary organisations that provide programmes for vulnerable and marginalised children, particularly education, skills development and family re-unification.

New ‘Chefs Who Share Young Chef Award’ Launched

This year will see the introduction of the 'Chefs who share - Young Chef Award’, an inspiring new initiative that sets out to showcase and nurture South Africa’s young culinary talent. The award is part of the spectacular black-tie charity gala ‘Chefs who share – the ART of giving’, which will be held in Cape Town in September 2015. It will offer a once in a lifetime opportunity for South Africa’s younger generation of chefs, with one young chef also winning an incredible trip to Europe.

Bringing together 14 of South Africa’s best chefs is at the core of 'Chefs who share’. On the night of the gala, the chefs work in seven teams of two, plus a dedicated sommelier, with each duo creating its own unique four-course menu for 36 guests.

@ Food & Wine specializes in meat dishes. The 28-day matured steaks aged on the bone is perfectly cooked to specification by Chef Michael Badenhorst, presented with his own recipe of pumpkin fritters, sweet potato wedges or triple cooked chips.

The fillet steak accompanied by blue Cheese and biltong fritters was succulent, melting away in the mouth and can be compared to the steak prepared for the Oil Barons of Texas. Another delicious dish on the menu was the catch of the day, pan fried Cob with steamed vegetables, savoury rice, and orange hollandaise sauce.

The event organisers are now taking this concept one step further with the `Chefs who share - Young Chef Award’, inviting the country’s top restaurants to put forward their most talented and promising young chefs who are keen to fast-track their careers and make a name for themselves.

The aim of the ‘Chefs who share – Young Chef Award’ is to find talented young chefs, give them opportunities, inspire them and help them to develop their skills.

The 14 chefs will be working with on the night count amongst South Africa’s culinary elite, and will act as role models and mentors for the emerging kitchen stars.

To enter the award, the up-and-coming chefs have until 15 July to create an innovative canapé that will be served together with a glass of Moët & Chandon Impérial as a culinary highlight at the ‘Chefs who share’ gala evening. WESTERN CAPE CELEBRATES NATIONAL BLOOD DONOR MONTH The aim is also to encourage more people all over the world to donate blood voluntarily and regularly.

Encouraging people to donate blood regularly and voluntarily is quite a challenge in itself. The WP Blood Transfusion Service (WPBTS) places much emphasis on regular blood donors and they are identified as those donors who donate blood at least twice a year. It has been found that regular donors are the safest source of blood donations.

The 2011 Census indicated that the Western Cape has a population of approximately five million people. Sadly, less than 1.2% of the community in our region donates blood. This is a worrying statistic, as further research indicated that at least 75% of Western Cape inhabitants might need a blood transfusion during their lifetime.

In an attempt to increase awareness of National Blood Donor Month, World Blood Donor Day, general blood donation and blood safety, WPBTS hosted a road show with their big red blood bus, the Blood Buzz, visiting various destinations in the Western Cape with the aim to increase the number of new donors, as well as reinstate former donors.

Annually, during June, South Africans celebrate National Blood Donor Month, while countries worldwide celebrated World Blood Donor Day on 14 June.

Worldwide the theme for World Blood Donor Day is “thank you for saving my life.”

The theme focuses on thanking blood donors who save lives every day through their selfless act of donating blood.

Blood donation takes about 20 - 30 minutes of your time every 56 days. It requires you to be between the age of 16 and 65, weigh over 50kgs, be in good general health and lead a safe sexual lifestyle. It does not cause you any bodily harm, since only 475ml’s of blood is taken, which is replaced within 24 hours.

SOUTH AFRICA’S FORGOTTEN PEOPLE Netcare, through its corporate social investment (CSI) arm, the Netcare Foundation, is reaching out countrywide to disadvantaged individuals with certain medical conditions who are in urgent need of assistance.

“We are offering the resources at our disposal to help people needing life-altering corrective surgery for a range of medical conditions,” says Mande Toubkin, Netcare’s general manager: emergency, trauma, transplant and corporate social investment.

congenital abnormalities and can cause physiological problems, such as problems with swallowing and speech defects, as well as psychosocial difficulties. The cleft lip and palate programme has positively impacted nearly 500 people since its inception in 2004. After the repair operations, there is little to indicate that these children were born with a cleft and/or lip defect.

“Through our craniofacial, cleft lip and palate, and sight programmes, we are offering free medical interventions that will help alleviate the burdens faced by individuals afflicted with these conditions,” says Toubkin.

The Netcare Foundation was established in 2010 and is registered as a public benefit company. It is governed by a board of trustees.

“Aside from the physical aspects of such medical conditions, many people with craniofacial anomalies or cleft lip and palate are often stigmatised and shunned by society,” notes Netcare Foundation’s CSI operations project manager, Adelaide Senabe.

She says that cataracts, on the other hand, rob people of their independence and can prevent them from even undertaking simple day-to-day tasks, such as cooking and reading, as well as their livelihoods in some cases. Cataract blindness is also almost always reversible, through an operation to remove the cataract and replace the lens of the eye.

The Netcare Foundation in partnership with various organisations and healthcare practitioners has changed the lives of hundreds of South Africans afflicted with these conditions through its CSI programmes.

“We have helped many people to realise their full potential, and are now looking to reach people in more remote areas of South Africa, those very individuals who are so often forgotten by our society,” Senabe explains.

Craniofacial programme - It is estimated that one in every 2 000 babies is born with craniofacial anomalies, many of which are congenital, resulting in lasting deformities in the bones of the skull and face. Sadly, this disfiguration of head shape and facial structure commonly leads to these children being hidden away and forced into an isolated existence.

Cleft lip and palate programme - Cleft of the lip, palate or both is one of the most common

Where a second procedure is needed, it would likely be done several weeks after the first. The effect of reconstructive surgery on facial abnormalities fundamentally changes the way a child will live his or her life and it is therefore recommended that the surgery be done as early as possible. Early intervention can also pre-empt the need for speech therapy in young children.

Sight programme - Cataracts reduce the transparency of the lens of the eye and can lead to blindness if not treated. In fact, cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the world, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Although they occur more commonly in older people, cataracts can affect any age group. The cataract removal surgery, which completely restores vision, is performed at a number of Netcare hospitals, with the peak in such surgeries being undertaken as part of Netcare’s corporate social responsibility initiatives during Eye Care Awareness Month in September/ October.

The programme is supported by Vodacom, Nedbank and Alcon, and numerous healthcare practitioners at Netcare hospitals volunteer their time and expertise to perform the surgery.

Cycads are the most threatened groups of living organisms, where more than 60% of the ca. 300 species are classified as threatened with extinction (IUCN, 2010). South Africa has the highest cycad diversity within Africa (38 species), and also has the highest proportion of threatened species. South Africa also has the highest number of species classified as extinct in the wild, and is the only country with recent cycad extinctions (in the last decade) and also the highest proportion (12 out 38) of Critically Endangered species (IUCN, 2014). The aim of the Extinction! Dinosaurs and Cycads exhibition is to raise public awareness about threatened status of Cycads, so as to increase public participation in Cycads conservation and support for Cycads conservation research.

Hermanus FynArts 2015 The annual Hermanus FynArts celebration hosted in Hermanus during June treated the general public to an eclectic mix of some of the best in South African arts.

Honing in on the growing allure of craft beer, The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa has introduced a brand-new craft beer and craft cider tasting that may be booked for private groups of between two and 20 guests, either in The Leopard Bar, or the Conservatory. The private craft beer and craft cider tasting can be booked up to 24 hours in advance, depending on availability, any time between 10:00 and midnight.

Hosted by Head Sommelier Gregory Mutambe or his colleague Richard Gosa, guests will be able to taste five different craft beers and craft ciders, together with a selection of perfectly matched canapés prepared by Executive Chef Christo Pretorius.

The programme from 5-16 June included art exhibitions, music concerts, recitals, vintage films, talks, food and art demonstrations, wine tastings and pairings, and dinners and awards.

world’s newest Biosphere Reserve Mossel Bay Tourism welcomed UNESCO’s decision during the 27th annual session of the International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Programme to recognise both the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve and the Magaliesberg Biosphere following their nomination for biosphere reserve status by the Government of South Africa.

Willem Botha, chairperson of the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve (GCBR), said that biosphere reserves exist to promote sustainable development through combining local community efforts with sound science.

Celebrates Opening of new MTB Trails On 13 June 2015 the organizers of the FNB Wines2Whales (W2W) MTB Events together with Cape Pine and Cape Trails, opened the latest addition to the 2015 FNB W2W MTB route, the A-2-Z Trail in Grabouw, to the public.

“The A-2-Z Trail includes 26 sections of single track in the Grabouw Forest and Pine Plantations and is managed by Cape Pine,” says Johan Kriegler, FNB W2W MTB Director. “The A section starts near the exit of Gantouw Pass.”

“The Gouritz Cluster includes the coastal region from the Breede River to the Great Brak River, and inland from Montagu in the west to Prince Albert in the north and Uniondale in the east,” he said.

“Our aim as the GCBR is to ensure the sustainable utilisation of the unique biodiversity of the area through creating partnerships and encouraging responsible decision-making.

It’s important to include the socio-economic component to the benefit of all the people living within the biosphere reserve.”

Mr. Botha cited three of the GCBR’s current projects as examples: The Jobs for Carbon Project, which involves planting spekboom (Portulacaria afra, a plant that removes large quantities of carbon dioxide from the air, and that converts it to oxygen, and adds carbon to the soil), has attracted the attention of organisations like Cambridge University.

They are also investigating a new tourism project that will hopefully see the creation of a hiking trail along the banks of the Gouritz River. This trail will stretch from the river mouth to Calitzdorp in the Klein Karoo, and will trace the route that the Khoi people of old would have followed on their journeys inland.

The GCBR are working on a long-term project that will both eradicate alien plants in the region, and turn them into commodities with economic value. (This project has attracted the attention of several interest groups and government departments, as well as a Netherlands-based biofuels company.)

“The Z section is the last section, before riders leave the Grabouw Forest, to cross over a stream via a PERI Bridge on the Eikenhof farm, on their way to the finish at Oak Valley Wine Estate. Section A is the highest point and section Z the lowest point, therefore it is mostly downhill”.

“The circle route that will be opened to public will be 36km in length, however the route that W2W entrants will get to experience will be 23km in length,” continues Kriegler. “Interesting features to look out for will include wooden bridges crossing over streams, berms, the Winch (steep uphill climb wooden structure over rocks), Rock-a-Roll (a long wooden structure over and between rocks that goes up a steep embankment) as well as stunning scenery”.

Riders can purchase a day permit at the Cape Pine gate, opposite the Grabouw Country Club. Rated according to the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) standards, the A-2-Z Trail is a Blue/More Difficult/Intermediate rated trail.

Scoops Major National Award PAARL GOLF CLUB has won the 2015 John Collier Award for Environmental Compliance and Good Governance.

The award, which is open to all golf courses and golf estates in South Africa, is made following detailed assessment of a comprehensive questionnaire covering a wide range of environmental considerations including biodiversity, landscape, heritage, water resource management, turfgrass nutrient usage, pest control and energy management.

In taking the award, Paarl Golf Club, which is located on Boschenmeer Golf Estate, finished ahead of 150 other South African golf courses. In presenting the award to the Club on World Environment Day, Mr John Collier praised the quality of environmental management at Paarl, stating that their 75% rating ranked it well ahead of its nearest competitors. The average score recorded the survey was 21%.

Mr Collier said that he was particularly impressed with the work that is being done at the Club. He praised the environmental planning he had seen at the Club, and remarked that it had scored highly on all the key indicators. He said that Paarl Golf Club’s rating placed it at the forefront of best practice internationally, and ranked it well ahead of most businesses his organisation monitors.

Former winners of the awards, which are in their ninth year, include Leopard’s Creek, and last year’s winner Pretoria Country Club.

Marion Stewart, the Club Manager at Boschenmeer, expressed her delight at the recognition: “As the judges pointed out, what we are doing does make a difference to the big picture. We are blessed with a truly beautiful location, and this inspires us. We have been working extremely hard on a wide range of dimensions in order to achieve this.”

John Peach, who is Paarl born and raised, has been Course Superintendent since 2009. Peach, who has been chairman of the Western Province Turf Grass Managers’ Association, and is one of the leading innovators in golf course management, said that he was proud of what the Club has achieved.

He said that conservational and environmental issues had been at the forefront of the thinking behind the Boschenmeer concept ever since its inception.

As course manager, he monitors a wide range of indicators in order to ensure that global best practice is followed.

He said: “This was our first time to enter this survey, and this award provides real endorsement of what we have been trying to achieve.”

We have further plans for improvement in the environmental, energy management and conservation areas, and we will intensify our efforts in order to retain our number one status into the future.”

Mercedes-Benz Golf Hall of Fame Opened in Cape Town The Mercedes-Benz Southern African Golf Hall of Fame located at the Clock Tower precinct, V&A Waterfront was officially opened by Gary Player, assisted by the Mayor of Cape Town, Patricia de Lille and Sally Little on 2 June 2015.

The opening were attended by numerous golfing legends, champion golfers, heads of golf bodies, and captains of the golf industry.

Mercedes-Benz Golf Hall of Fame tells the story of the history of golf in Southern Africa, consolidates memorabilia, acknowledges those who have contributed to the rich heritage of golf in Southern Africa, retains the legacy for future generations, and expounds on the game of golf.

The museum catches your attention from the moment you enter, with photographs dating from the late 1800s, Pre and Post Democracy, TPA Tour results in South Africa, South African Open and Amateur winner, amazing Trivia, International triumphs, Women and Junior golf, Major winners, and so much more artifacts which tell the story of golf in this part of the world.

Sol Kerzner received the Harry Brews award for his selfless contribution to the development, improvement and growth of the game of golf. In 1979 he conceived and developed Sun City with two Gary Player designed championship courses and raised the standard for all S.A Golf courses.

The museum offers a huge display of golf clubs dating from 1850, the first golf balls, Sunday clubs, scrappers, odd clubs, trophies, including Louis Oosthuizen’s British Open trophy, the Canada Cup won by Harold Henning and Gary Player, and numerous other trophies.

Also on display are all those inducted since 2009, as well as numerous displays and golfing memorabilia, pictures, and golf clubs belonging to Bobby Locke, Sally Little, Vincent Tshabalala, and so many others.

The guests were enthralled by numerous stories told by icons as Hugh Baiocchi, Denis Hutchinson, Dale Hayes, Johann Rupert, Sally Little, and many others, as well as a surprise video messages from David Frost and Jack Nicklaus, and then it was Gary Player’s turn to enthrall all with his energy and wonderful stories.

The following day,The South African Golf Heritage Trust hosted an exclusive Golf Hall of Fame Tournament which included the likes of Deputy Minister of Tourism Tokozile Xasa, Hugh Baiocchi, Fulton Allem, John Fourie, John Bland, Dale Hayes, Denis Hutchinson, and a host of professional Springboks, and leading business personalities.

“This heritage museum will be of interest to young and old, golfer and non-golfer, alike,” says trustee, Barry Cohen.

The museum opening was followed by the ‘Golf Event of the Year’, the 6th Mercedes-Benz Southern Africa Golf Hall of Fame Induction banquet, which was addressed by the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Tokozile Xasa and where the stars of golf, captains of industry, heads of golf bodies, and many others came to pay tribute to Gary Player, 2014 inductees Fulton Allem, John Fourie, Lewis Chitengwa and others.

MTN-Qhubeka squad for Tour de France Seven African riders and four internationals made the MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung Tour de France squad.

As an African team racing to raise awareness for the Qhubeka charity, the team will head to the Tour de France with the goal of putting 5000 African children on bicycles through the #BicyclesChangeLives campaign.

Three South African riders are represented - South African national road race champion Jacques Janse van Rensburg, the African continental road race champion Louis Meintjes, and fast finishing Reinardt Janse van Rensburg have all made the selection.

The Eritrean trio who were all part of Eritrea’s continental team time trial victory this year have all also made the selection. Merhawi Kudus, Daniel Teklehaimanot and Natnael Berhane will each by vying for one of the final nine starting spots. The final African rider on the list is the Algerian Tour de Langkawi victor, Youcef Reguigui.

Team MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung are set to make history when they become the first African registered cycling team to participate in the Tour de France this year. To be on the start line of Le Tour is a huge step forward for their team and a massive milestone for African cycling.

Four experienced internationals, Edvald Boasson Hagen, Steve Cummings, Serge Pauwels and Tyler Farrar are complementing the team. All four men have been an integral part to the development of the African riders and are now ready to help champion the #BicyclesChangeLives campaign cause at the Tour de France.

New Balance as Official Supplier

Andy Birkett has confirmed that he will be on the start line for the defence of the Berg River Canoe Marathon title that he won last year when then the 54th edition of the race gets under way in Paarl on 15 July 2015.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) welcomed New Balance as its official apparel and footwear supplier for the next five years.

Birkett entered the Berg River Canoe Marathon last year as part of his training for the Marathon World Championships in Oklahoma City, and felt that the 220km four day race had contributed well to his conditioning for the world title decider. Having made the South African K1 and the K2 team for the 2015 Marathon World Champs in Gyor in Hungary, Birkett was quick to finalise his plans for the build-up to the event that included returning to the Western Cape for the defence of his Berg title – last year he won the race in his first serious attempt at the title.

The agreement grants New Balance exclusivity as the official apparel supplier of Team Kit and products to CSA, its Teams, Staff and Players and as CSA’s official merchandising partner.

The contract runs from 01 May 2015 to 30 April 2020.

"It is an awesome race and it is a very important part of my build-up to the world champs." The race, widely recognised as one of the toughest ultra-distance marathon canoeing events in the world, covers 240km over four stages from Paarl north-west to Velddrif on the Cape West Coast, taking the athletes and their support crews through the Winelands, the Swartland and down the Cape West Coast.
