New Therapeutic Food Production Facility to Open in Cape Town

The opening of a new world-class therapeutic food production facility in Cape Town is a triumph for relief agencies operating in Africa where one in three childhood deaths are linked to malnutrition. The facility is a joint venture between South African shareholders and Norwegianbased GC Rieber Compact and will make and distribute a ready-to-use therapeutic food product called eeZeePaste, specifically designed for extremely malnourished children between the ages of 6 and 24 months.

FOOD Page 10

The development of therapeutic food products such as eeZeePaste has revolutionized the treatment of severe malnutrition because it allows infants and children to be safely treated at home. These ready-to-use products are designed to be consumed directly from the sachet without any preparation and therefore avoid accidental contamination from unsafe water sources. The product also has a 24-month shelf life and is easily transportable making it an ideal response to malnutrition in remote or difficult to access areas. The new facility has also reinforced Cape Town’s position as a world-class food-processing destination.

“The agribusiness value chain is particularly well-established in the Western Cape, and this makes it particularly appealing to investors in the agri-processing and biotechnology sectors,” explained Wesgro’s Head of Investment Promotion Salman Kajie.

What differentiates the GC Rieber Compact from other locally produced ready-to-use fortified foods is that it is the only UNICEF accredited producer in South Africa and one of only 13 in the world.

“The factory has undergone the SA Bureau of Standards (SABS) FSSC22000 food safety audit and accreditation and is now a recommended supplier to UNICEF and other leading humanitarian and aid agencies,” prides Baxter. Freightage also played an important role in their decision to base the plant in Cape Town. “Cape Town has excellent transport networks and provides easy access to GC Rieber’s markets in East and Central Africa and South East Asia,” said Kajie. As the Western Cape’s official Tourism, Trade, and Investment Promotion Agency, Wesgro was instrumental in connecting GC Rieber with the City of Cape Town and the Department of Agriculture. “The customized commercial intelligence definitely helped us navigate the local regulatory framework and obtain the relevant approvals,” said Baxter. The new facility has already created 21 high-quality new jobs and this number is expected to increase in the near future. “We are excited about this facility, not only because it provides an opportunity for Africa to create life-saving nutritional solutions for her own people but also because the multimillion Rand project represents a clear vote of confidence in South Africa as an investment destination,” said Baxter. UNICEF data estimates that worldwide, more than 34 million children under the age of five suffer from acute malnutrition while an additional 17 million children suffer from its most extreme form, severe acute malnutrition, and require specialised therapeutic feeding care in the form of preparations such as eeZeePaste.

Western Cape Launches Interactive Green Farming Portal In a bold move to sustain the Western Cape’s agricultural sector, the province has launched the GreenAgri web-based portal. Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities, officially launched the portal at the Backsberg Estate Cellars recently. The initiative is a partnership between the Western Cape Department of Agriculture and GreenCape. “The GreenAgri portal will be an interactive portal for farmers, researchers and the private sector. The latest environmentally-friendly farming practices will be showcased. It will also provide more information on the Western Cape Government’s green policies and the industry will have the opportunity to comment on government proposals on these policies.” Minister Winde said many farmers were using innovation to pioneer environmentally practices and the portal would provide support to emerging, urban and small-scale farmers. “Farmers will be able to leave messages and we’ll be able to interact with them and address their concerns or questions. It’s compatible on PC, smartphone and tablet.”

Cape Town and Western Cape Secures Biggest Congress For The City

The World Ophthalmology Congress (WOC) will be held on the African continent for the first time in 2020 when the Western Cape welcomes approximately 15, 000 delegates to the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The conference is one of the world’s largest medical meetings and will be the biggest business event meeting ever hosted in Cape Town. The congress is expected to bring in an additional R210 million into the Western Cape economy over its five days with each delegate spending an estimated R2 800 per day in and around the city of Cape Town. Congresses like these are particularly lucrative to their host destinations because of the knock-on effect they have on related sectors like accommodation, shopping and wine & cuisine. Cape Town is increasingly positioning itself as the leading conference destination in Southern Africa and the successful bid was the result of collaboration between key stakeholders and partners such as Cape Town International Convention Centre and the Ophthalmology Society of South Africa (OSSA). “This coordinated continental effort is as much a win for Africa as it exposes the international ophthalmic community to the professionalism and countless opportunities within the industry on our continent.” said Corne Koch Head of the Cape Town and Western Cape Convention Bureau, a division of Wesgro.

The second annual Cape Leopard Trust Fundraiser was an incredible success. More than two hundred guests arrived at Leopard’s Leap Family Vineyards for the lunch and auction that raised R460 600 for the conservation of the Cape Leopard.

According to OSSA, the congress has huge benefits for Ophthalmology and eye care on the continent and will be the biggest ever opportunity for African ophthalmologists to learn from the best in all areas of speciality. OSSA President, Andew Boliter says, “The congress will also increase awareness internationally of the great disparities in standards of eye care globally and the particular needs of the African continent”. The bid motivation emphasised the fact that patients in Africa and in particular developing parts of South Africa, suffer from the tremendous burden of unnecessary visual loss and preventable blindness.

Opulent Living Experiences, headed up by Florian Gast and Barbara Lenhard, coordinated the festivities on the day, while Celebrity MC’s, Africa Melane and Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp, captivated the crowd in the build up to the auction that featured lot items including a Dylan Lewis maquette, a painting by self-taught Cape Town based artist Andrew Cooper valued at R110,000 and a Leopard photograph by leading photographer and filmmaker Adrian Steirn, valued at R50,000.

The congress will also be the first time that both CTICC West and East will simultaneously be hosting 15000 delegates. “To date we have hosted more than 450 international association conferences across a broad spectrum of sectors, including agro-processing, the green economy, ICT, property, mining, oil and gas and medical, but nothing of this size,” explained Cape Town International Convention Centre CEO, Julie-May Ellingson.

Over R400,000 Raised For Cape Leopard Trust

The CTICC is currently undergoing an expansion that is due for completion in 2017 and will continue to play a role in bringing international business to the region. “The expansion will allow us to meet the growing demand to stage more events, offer more flexibility and allow for an increase in the concurrent hosting of various sizes of meetings, conventions, exhibitions and other events” said Ellingson.

Helen Turnbull, CEO of the Cape Leopard Trust, said in appreciation: “The atmosphere at the event was incredible and we are extremely grateful to all those who participated. The funds raised this year will go towards sustaining The Cape Leopard Trust operations, primarily paying airtime for satellite tracking collars, fuel and financing the resumption of the Cederberg leopard research project.“ “Leopard’s Leap has been a proud sponsor of the trust since its inception and we have enjoyed being the host and associate of such a great cause and what has become a highly celebrated and enjoyed annual event,” added Hein Koegelenberg, CEO of Leopard’s Leap. Thanks to the generosity and support of Leopard’s Leap, FNB, Fusion Global and Bridgestone, 100% of the funds raised have been donated to The Cape Leopard Trust.

Simply Bee - Truth Regarding Honey Harvested It is of utmost importance for consumers to know, that honey harvested from infected hives is still suitable for human consumption; it does not affect the taste of the honey, nor is this bacterial infection transferable from the bees to humans. Currently bees locally as well as globally are under serious threat from the devastating brood-disease AFB that is demising huge quantities of bee colonies. American Foulbrood (AFB) disease is the worst bee disease in the world. It is caused by a bacteria which infects bee larvae as they are fed, resulting in their death as pupae which are confined to the brood box. It does not affect humans or adult bees, but the brood collapse results in the eventual death of the colony. AFB has received extensive coverage in the media of late, as food security and jobs in the community are under serious threat! Simply Bee is a proud family-orientated business that offers 100 % pure fynbos honey and a range of all natural, hand-made beeswax products from renewable and plentiful resources found in nature. At Simply Bee they adhere to only responsible and traditional beekeeping practices, ensure healthy and happy bees that create only the purest of fynbos honey, beeswax and Propolis, which are all used in the making of their own product range. Simply Bee also do not move their hives for pollination purposes, so as to minimize their exposure to bee illnesses. Simply Bee recently opened a Bee Observation Centre right next door to their Simply Bee Show Room in Hopefield. The Centre offers visitors and groups the opportunity to safely view a bee colony at work in their natural environment. They also educate visitors on the importance of bees for their environment and food

security, and their honey tastings are very popular! For beekeepers, whether they are experienced or just hobbyists, Simply Bee offer regular talks by specialists in the bee industry to assist and educate in the management of hives and the prevention of diseases in bee colonies. The Western Cape Bee Industry Association, together with DAFF (Department of Fauna & Flora), SABIO and experienced specialists have put together an extensive guide as to how to recognize and to manage AFB. These guidelines are for small beekeepers (even if you have just one hive) or commercial beekeepers, as well as hobbyists. Camellia Club Launches Blooming Marvellous Initiative Do you have a camellia tree on your property that might be of historical interest? If so, the South African branch of the International Camellia Society (ICS) would like to hear from you. This local group of horticultural enthusiasts held its annual meeting at Vergelegen Estate in Somerset West on 23 August.

The magnificent 315-year-old wine farm boasts the only International Camellia Garden of Excellence in Africa. Its renowned collection of over 1000 crimson, pink and white blooming camellia bushes comprises about 550 different camellia cultivars, from as far afield as France, Japan, America and South Africa. “Vergelegen became a member of the ICS in 2010, and they have asked local enthusiasts to provide input on historic camellias to be found in South Africa,” explained Vergelegen horticulturist Richard Arm. “We would be most interested to hear about any unusual old varieties, and the stories that go with them.” Vergelegen itself has numerous classic, pre-1940s Camellia japonica cultivars, most of which are now large, mature shrubs up to five metres high. Most of these were planted by Cynthia Barlow after her family bought Vergelegen in 1941. The queen of the winter garden is now nearing the end of its blooming cycle, but outstanding flowers can still be viewed at Vergelegen for about another month. The estate is open every day from 09h30 to 16h00 at a cost of R10/head, with a reduced rate of R5/person for pensioners. Personalised tours of the camellias and other gardens at Vergelegen may be organised by arrangement for gardening clubs and other interested parties. There are 18 diverse gardens extending over 10 hectares, part of a cultural heritage area spanning 60 hectares.

The event was attended by about 20 camellia experts, including horticulturist and landscape designer Keith Kirsten and retired nurseryman Jan van Bergen, who has donated numerous shrubs to Vergelegen since 1995.

If you think your camellia tree could be of historic interest, please contact Keith Kirsten at office@keithkirsten.com or Vergelegen horticulturist Richard Arm at gardens@vergelegen.co.za

Springbok Experience Rugby Museum Named in Top 1% of World's Attractions The South African Rugby Union’s Springbok Experience Rugby Museum in Cape Town has been named in the top 1% of world attractions, by TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site. The Springbok Experience, which celebrated its second birthday on Heritage Day, has been awarded TripAdvisor’s highest accolade, a Travelers’ Choice Award, in their latest citations. The Springbok Experience has attracted close to 80 000 visitors to rave reviews since it opened its doors at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town in September 2013. Jurie Roux, CEO of SARU said that the instruction to the development team had been twofold: to create a museum that told the story of South African rugby in all its diverse racial traditions and one that offered a “wow” experience. “There are 91 media channels playing across touch screens, monitors and projectors, which requires 14km of cabling to help tell the story,” said Roux. “That story carries on across half a kilometre of printed graphic panels as well as through some beautifully preserved objects.” “We have a short movie about rugby in South Africa today as well as the game-playing ‘Springbok Trials’ zone, which has a series of specially created interactive games that test rugby skills

such as passing, kicking, fitness and reactions.“ “At our launch ceremony we invited the surviving 50 or so captains spanning the years and the different federations from 1960 to the present time to join us,” said Roux. “We took casts of their handprints which have now been cast into bronze and will be the latest addition to the collection and be another way of uniting once divided traditions.”

Survey Reveals What Makes

How can members save

South Africans See Red

with their Medical Scheme choice for 2016 ?

Traffic jams, queue jumpers and people who think rules don’t apply to them have emerged among the list of 30 things that gets South Africans’ blood boiling, according to a health survey of Pharma Dynamics released in September to mark National Heart Awareness Month.

Medical Schemes offer paybacks and discounts to members that live a healthy active lifestyle.

Mariska van Aswegen, spokesperson of Pharma Dynamic said they commissioned the poll as a way to get South Africans to take their heart-health more seriously.

Discovery launched Vitality Active Rewards where members can achieve weekly goals and receive weekly rewards. From well known brands such as Kauai or Vida e Caffé, you can enjoy these reward benefits each week by completing goals that are set out for you.

“With 6.3 million South Africans living with high blood pressure, SA has one of the highest rates of hypertension in the world. Many however remain unaware of their condition because high blood pressure usually has no symptoms. Hypertension is also a precursor and leading cause behind other life-threatening conditions such as stroke and heart disease.” “Stressful situations can cause your blood pressure to spike temporarily, but too much stress could lead to high blood pressure in the long-run. Doing activities that can help you manage your stress and improve your health can make a long-term difference in lowering blood pressure,” she says. More than 1 300 South Africans were polled by the country’s leading heart and stroke treatment provider, to divulge the things that most get their goat, with taxi drivers topping the list. People cutting in line, folk who ignore the rules, forgetting to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ and load-shedding complete SA’s top five rageinducing annoyances. Commuting in SA evidently also shoots our blood pressure through the roof especially when motorists and/or cyclists jump red traffic lights, drivers ignoring zebra crossings or when Cocky Joes rip through suburbia or housing estates at supersonic speeds.

Free Gym Membership Adult members will have access to Virgin Active and Planet Fitness where they can save up to 100% off monthly gym fees based on the number of active rewards goals they achieve. Free Local Flights Fly with Kulula.com or British Airways at no cost by achieving goals. Tracking your progress Members will receive an Apple watch to track their daily achievements. Should a member achieve their goal, they will receive the watch for free or members will pay a monthly fee if they have not achieved any goals for the month. Medical Scheme Outlook for 2016 Discovery Medical Scheme enhanced their benefit offerings by adding new options with an contributions increase of 8,6% for 2016 on average, maintaining a competitive discount of 14.8% to the market.

Other temper-triggers highlighted in Pharma Dynamics’ poll include anti-social behaviour such as when someone pays more attention to their electronic device(s) than to you, along with having to go through endless automated phone options and then being kept on hold. Money also leaves us fuming with high petrol prices, having to pay a fee for withdrawing money from an ATM, paying for parking when you only intend to pop into the shops. Twenty percent of respondents experience daily stress and aggravation from everyday irritations and frustrations, and almost 40% admitted that these usually cause them stress long after the incident. Some other annoyances according to the survey include: bad manners, rudeness in general, smoking around children, spitting in public, using cellphones while driving, backstabbers, people eating loudly and sloppily, people who swear all the time, people who can’t spell or use correct grammar, pop-up adverts on the internet, paying tax, drivers speeding through housing estates, laziness, and your neighbour mowing the lawn or drilling at 7am on the weekend. Van Aswegen says if you’re tired, stressed or simply at the end of your tether, it doesn’t take much to make your blood boil. “Try to take short breaks during times of the day that tend to be very stressful, identify what specifically makes you angry and think of possible solutions, humour can also help to diffuse tension, practice relaxation skills especially when your temper flares, while exercise is a great way to help reduce stress and feelings of frustration.”

Nature Reserves

NSC Candidates

Outdoor Popular Classrooms For Learners

The matric class of 2015 is entering one of the most challenging and arguably most important times of their lives – the build up to their final examinations.

The number of learners from schools across the metro to the City of Cape Town’s nature reserves increased sharply during the 2014/15 financial year compared with the previous financial year. More than 43 000 learners from 1 396 schools attended educational programmes in the City’s reserves, while approximately 14 500 adults attended programmes totalling more than 60 000 person days of education.

With days to go until the start of the 2015 NSC examinations, it is important for all candidates to make use of all the resources available to them.

During the year in review, the City’s nature reserves attracted 347 740 visitors in total and a year-on-year increase in income from approximately R1 million to R1,55 million was recorded. This amounted to 164% more than what was expected. The City manages 16 nature reserves across the city and the firm year-on-year increase in revenue can be attributed to the sound management of the reserves, the dedicated maintenance of the reserve facilities, and an innovative and creative approach to making reserves inclusive and sustainable public green spaces. “We are doing our very best to ensure that the significance of our biodiversity heritage is being taught from an early age. The year-on-year increase of almost 6 000 additional learners to our reserves show that we are making good progress. Importantly, the majority of the learners attending environmental education programmes in our reserves are from previously disadvantaged areas. In the last financial year, we also held various workshops for teachers as nature’s classroom can be unlocked as one of the best teaching tools.” The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is committed to supporting NSC candidates in every possible way to pass matric and to achieve excellent results. Thousands of NSC candidates across the Western Cape have already begun writing the 2015 NSC trial examinations. To help candidates to pass their matric, WCED have prepared a booklet, called “Tips for Success”, to provide advice on preparing for the exams, planning study time and what to cover in each subject. The “Tips for Success” booklet includes advice from those who excelled in last year’s exams, along with the exam timetable and information on bursaries and loans for studying after school. The full booklet can be downloaded from the WCED website.

“Biodiversity in the city is a valuable part of our heritage and plays an important role in underpinning a healthy and sustainable urban environment. Retaining biodiversity in our green open space system can be a powerful driver of education, tourism, economic growth and social upliftment. Cape Town, unlike other world cities, is a global biodiversity hotspot of international importance without parallel in an urban context,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Environment and Spatial Planning, Councillor Johan van der Merwe.

The importance of practising exam questions cannot be emphasised enough. This is why the WCED has made past exam papers available to all learners. Candidates should use their June examination results as an indication of what their strong and weaker subjects are. Candidates should also make use of the E-Portal resources on the WCED website to find other resources that may assist them. There are also a wide range of matric revision videos on the WCED YouTube channel. These provide guidance mainly on how to tackle specific questions in the exam. To the 2015 NSC Candidates, your success will depend on what you put into your studies. This in turn depends on how you plan your time, how hard you study, and that you stay focused, positive and healthy. With only days to go to the start of the 2015 NSC, matric learners have less days per subject of study time remaining. We wish all schools and all candidates every success as they enter the final straight before the start of the NSC examinations.

WCED Makes Urgent Call to Parents to Enrol Children To date, schools in the Western Cape have processed 128 545 applications for placement for the 2016 school year. So far, 118 429 learners have been placed. Parents were encouraged to apply to schools by the 30th June 2015. Parents who now still need spaces at schools need to urgently approach their nearest schools or the closest district office to find out which schools still have spaces available. WCED cannot guarantee places in schools of choice, but will do their utmost to place children appropriately. It is crucial that parents who have failed to enrol their child for the 2016 school year to do so urgently and before the end of the 3rd term to ensure that they secure a place for their child. Planning for the school year ahead requires great deal of work and involves various structures within the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), including head office, the districts, principals, educators and school management teams. Last year, WCED introduced the new online School Admission Management Information system (SAMI). The system was developed to simplify the management of learner enrolment. The system makes it much easier for schools to capture applications for places and to share this information with other schools and officials. The SAMI system is currently being used to direct learners to schools that have spaces available. WCED officials have been using the system to generate lists of learners accepted at more than one school. Those parents whose child has been accepted at multiple schools are currently being notified that they need to choose which school to send their child to. There are currently 3 470 learners who have been accepted at more than one school. 2 257 of these learners are Grade 8 learners who have not confirmed if they are taking up their places. WCED expect that learners will continue to migrate to the Western Cape from other provinces in search of a better education and access to opportunities.

Included in their planning for 2016, is the allocation of additional mobiles to schools, as well as additional LTSM being ordered for predicted growth. 3 new schools are being opened and approximately 190 additional mobile classrooms are being sourced to meet demands. 9 replacement schools have also been completed and learners and teachers will be enjoying access to these brand new facilities by the end of this year. Each year WCED plan as best as they can for the influx of additional learners from other provinces. The inward migration into the Western Cape has huge financial and planning implications, impacting on the provisioning of education resources and the overall management of the system. WCED have to prioritise according to the greatest need across the whole province, and available budget. The current budget is under considerable pressure. WCED appeal to all parents to honour enrolment deadlines for their children. Failure to enrol children on time places a massive burden on officials at the start of the school year, and disrupts teaching and learning time.

Overcoming A Learning Disability To Succeed In Exams With exams looming for high school learners and students at higher education institutions, thousands will face the challenge with the added hurdle of having to contend with a learning disability. But an education expert says that these young people can make a success of their studies with the help of a solid strategy and support from their institutions. “Current figures suggest that almost 11% of learners and students face learning disabilities, although the actual figure is likely to be much higher than that due to under-reporting and under-detection,” says Nola Payne, Head of Faculty: Information Technology at The Independent Institute of Education, SA’s largest and most accredited private higher education institution. Payne says the challenges faced by young people attempting to master their work also fall within a broad range – with some experiencing diagnosed challenges and others facing limiting challenges which are either considered normal, behavioural challenges, or are not identified at all. Payne says that often people were not aware that if a learning disability had been identified and documented, it was possible to apply for some form of concession or accommodation during exams.

“To qualify for such concessions, formal assessment is critical. For disabilities, the accommodations and concessions are often ongoing and may or may not need to be formally renewed. More often than not you will be able to access the same concessions you did at school in your higher education institution.” “A professional must assist with the documentation and motivation, which should include the period for which a concession is likely to be needed. Higher Education institutions will also require reasonable notice so it is prudent to apply as soon as you can.” “These techniques are valuable to everyone, and even more so to those who need a little bit extra support and preparation,” she says. Ways to counter the impact of learning challenges include: starting revision well in advance of the exams, having a study timetable, keeping study sessions short, using other resources to supplement the notes from class, getting a study buddy, making posters and practising. “Learning disabilities do pose challenges, but they do not necessarily stand in the way of achieving your dreams,” says Payne.

Delicious Roosterkoek & Coffee @ Oude Post Bistro Buffeljagsrivier Most interesting stories begin with “a long, long time ago...” This story has its beginnings in 1730, when the VOC constructed a trading outpost “op Rietvallij aan de Buffeljagds Rivier,” to protect the cattle farmers and sympathetic Khoi against the San. OUDE POST Monument is approximately a kilometer downstream from Suurbraak along the Buffelsjagsriver.

Comfort Food with a Modern Global Influence - Henri's Walking into Henri’s, you’ll be greeted by the owner, Pierre Vosloo and his staff, who will treat you like guests in their own home. Henri’s is conveniently situated on Somerset West Main Road in a heritage house that has been renovated into a spacious contemporary restaurant. The top floor has been renovated and can be used for private functions.

This is where the name for OUDE POST BP Buffelsjagriver came from. It is the new owner’s, dream and vision that it will once again become a “trading post,” where people from all over can come and relax, rest and enjoy themselves in a children and pet friendly, warm and inviting atmosphere. Their focus is on simplicity, quality and delicious produce, uniqueness and outstanding service.

Well known for their aged grassfed beef as well as the freshest local seafood. The menu can be described as comfort food with a modern global influence. Henri’s offers a light lunch menu during the day and also has a kiddies menu. There is a wood fired oven, where they bake great tasting thin based pizza. Henri’s offer their patrons a complimentary focaccia per table. You can also enjoy a drink on their patio or at their stylish bar. Henri’s offer a wide selection of craft and imported beers. The wine list is quite substantial and offers a variety of wine by the glass, but patrons are welcome to bring their own wine, as Henri’s do not charge corkage. Once you have discovered Henri’s Restaurant & Pub you will be back (and back again)! Henri’s is open Monday to Saturday from 12h00 till late.

Fresh New format for SA’s Most Prestigious Restaurant Awards

Another interesting bit of history... the outpost OUDE POST stood from 1730 to 1790. Here “trek” oxen were acquired from the Hessequa, but it also had to control the “illegal” trade with the khoi. A corporal and seven Dragoons were entrusted with this task. There is a monument on the R324 in Suurbraak, between Swellendam and Barrydale that marks the exact spot. If you are travelling between Cape Town and George, or are locally based, by all means STOP at OUDE POST Bistro just 10 km outside Swellendam. The “ROOSTEKOEKE” are freshly baked and delicious - try the tasty new fillings. They also have toasted sandwiches, muffins and the best brownies in the Western Cape and “FARMSTALL PRODUCTS.” There are also wide-open spaces and interesting things for the kids, who can stretch their legs, enjoy themselves and get rid of some of that pent-up energy. Also for the first time, OUDE POST Bistro is offering ground coffee, espresso, cappuccino and cafe latte!!! For more information contact 028 512 3700 or email info@buffeljagsfillup.co.za

A further change to this year’s restaurant awards is that for the first time, the categories formerly known as the ‘Best of’ awards will be announced at separate events and be renamed the Best Everyday Eateries. In October, two successive events will be hosted – one in Johannesburg and one in Cape Town. The Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards, however, remain the most prestigious accolades for fine dining restaurants, their chefs and the culinary industry in South Africa. International Stars of Magic

BANFF Is Back In October

transforms GrandWest into the ultimate magical paradise

With Films of Adventures

They’ve dazzled audiences in theatres across the globe for decades with their unbelievable feats of magic – now three of the world’s finest illusionists, Max Maven, Paul Wilson and Rob Zabrecky, will transform Cape Town’s very own GrandWest into a marvellous paradise in the amazing extravaganza, the International Stars of Magic, from 9 - 11 October, 2015 at 8pm nightly!

This October the annual Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour comes to South Africa, bringing with it films of adventures by ski, bike, rock, ropes and on water. For the tenth year, Cape Union Mart proudly hosts the screening of the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour films at Ster-Kinekor cinemas in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth and Pretoria.

Hosted by the College of Magic, the Mother City’s only magical arts organisation, the International Stars of Magic forms part of the 2015 South African Magic Championships, a triennial event held to select the best magicians nationwide.

From Antarctica to Iceland, the annual Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour visits 44 countries to bring a selection of films on exploration, adventure, culture, environment, and mountain films to growing audiences.

Combining three nights of unlimited magic, three of the world’s most celebrated performers and the most entertaining venue in Cape Town, this is magical entertainment like you’ve never seen it before! Set to mystify audiences nightly at the International Stars of Magic are: Max Maven (USA) – The Mentalist, whose performance is described by The New York Times as being a “categorydefying mind-reading show that veers into conceptual art”. Hailed as one of the greatest mindreaders in the world – Maven will be having you question what is real and what is not – are your thoughts really your own? Paul Wilson (UK) – The Con Artist, star of the BBC’s The Real Hustle, he is the world's foremost expert on cons and scams, a master magician, speaker, and authority on the art of deception. Paul Wilson proves that anyone can be conned and that knowledge is the only defence. Don’t miss this incredible glimpse behind the curtain of duplicity. Rob Zabrecky (USA) – The Deceptionist, two time Stage Magician of the Year from the famed Magic Castle in Los Angeles, the name means ‘abracadabra sideways’ ! With a penchant for the weird and incredible – or a psycho from the twilight zone doing magic - Zabrecky is renowned as a magical humourist who creates an abstract universe that pushes performance to its very edge.”

Eleven award-winning and audience-nominated Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour films, selected from hundreds of submissions, will be shown at each screening in South Africa. They include a mix of topics and styles that are entertaining, inspiring and thought-provoking. These films range in duration from the intense-action, two-minute kayaking video 'Into the Ditch' to the 37-minute documentary film 'And then we swam', winner of the Best Exploration & Adventure Film category. Regular audiences will delight in seeing some of their favourite adventurers in action. Danny MacAskill is up to his mountain biking feats again in 'Danny MacAskill - The Ridge', Rush Sturges kayaks in an urban environment in 'Into the Ditch' and Alex Honnold climbs desert towers in 'Sufferfest 2'.

2015 is a big year for the College of Magic, the only organisation of its kind in the world, as it celebrates three and a half decades of training adults and children in the theatrical performance art of magic and its allied arts.

South African audiences are also treated to the screening of an additional fiveminute film: the winning submission from the Cape Union Mart Adventure Film Challenge. This annual film competition encourages South African filmmakers and athletes to capture and celebrate local outdoor culture. The 2015 Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour is screened at these Ster-Kinekor cinemas in Cape Town at Cavendish Square, 23 October - 2 November 2015, and Tygervalley Centre, 23 October - 2 November 2015. Shows start at 20h00 and all eleven films are shown at each screening. Tickets can be purchased directly through Ster-Kinekor.

Ballet and Orchestra Share Stage in Spectacular Symphony of Dance The Cape Town City Ballet and Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra will appear together on stage for the spectacular production, Symphony of Dance, showing at Artscape in Cape Town from 7-11 October. Conceptualized by Robin van Wyk, Artistic Director of Cape Town City Ballet, the programme features six breath-taking ballets danced to famous orchestral and instrumental masterpieces by Strauss, Rachmaninoff, Ponchielli, Barber and Pärt. “Our ballet audiences are accustomed to seeing the dancers on stage and the orchestra in the pit. However, for Symphony of Dance, the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Graham Scott, will share the onstage limelight with us in a wonderful celebration of classical and neo-classical dance,” says Van Wyk The highlight of the programme is bound to be the world premiere and first ever staging of Romance, a new ballet by Robin van Wyk, danced to a live performance of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s magnificent 2nd Piano Concerto. Audiences will be thrilled to know that the piano soloist for all performances will be the acclaimed South African pianist, Francois du Toit. Two more ballets will also be premiered. Largo Variation, choreographed by Kirsten Isenberg, is set to the poignant minimalistic, Spiegel im Spiegel, by the Estonian composer, Arvo Pärt. In Adagio for Strings, another new work by Van Wyk, the dancers will move to the stirringly emotive composition by the same name, written by American composer Samuel Barber. Audiences can additionally look forward to the beloved music of Johann Strauss in The Emperor Waltz, choreographed by Veronica Paeper, and The Blue Danube, choreographed by Van Wyk. In Van Wyk’s ballet Ensemble for Six, The Dance of the Hours from Amilcare Ponchielli’s opera, La Gioconda, will take centre stage. Tickets available at Computicket

Top Ten Tips for Small Businesses to Spring Into Action As we approach the last quarter of the business year, small businesses everywhere need to take stock of the year, do some spring-cleaning and make final plans for a last push in 2015. The National Small Business Chamber (NSBC), launched Small Business Friday™ a movement by the NSBC in association with Nedbank, has shared ten tips for springing into action: “At times like these it is always good to revisit your business and double check a few essentials before moving forward,” says Mike Anderson, CEO and founder of the NSBC. Do you still love what you do? - It is a tough time of year and you need to make one more push until December. Remembering why you are in the business and the reasons you love it, will help energise you and find a renewed way forward. Take small steps forward - Rather than becoming overwhelmed by the task at hand, keep it simple and take tiny steps forward. Inch by inch we move closer to the goal and this consistent movement forward will help you gain good ground. Be decisive - Don’t wait for everything to be perfect. Instead of seeking the impossible, efficient decision makers tend to leap without all the answers and trust that they’ll be able to build their wings on the way down. Don't do it alone - You need a support system while you're starting a business (and afterwards). Mike Anderson (the CEO and Founder of the NSBC)

There are organisations such as the NSBC who can help with advice and inspiration, as well as quality networking opportunities.

When you're starting a business, experienced guidance is the best support system of all. Never Stop Networking. Don’t Give Up - Never stop pushing, looking for business or providing the best service. It’s hard to always believe, but as a self-employed person, you simply have no choice. Never stop. Be ruthless with money – it won’t always be there - Saving habits are the foundation of all financial success. As Warren Buffet put it – ‘Do not depend on a single income, don’t buy compulsively and do not save what is left after spending, spend what is left after saving or investing.’ Use PR as your secret weapon - If you are a local small business, use a good PR consultant and look at local media for PR. Read those publications, forge relationships, find out what types of stories the journalists are covering. Knowledge is power. Collect data - You need to know your business inside and out, so collect information that will help you manage the business, especially when you hit panic mode. Go back to the numbers and work on a solution. Also collect customer information or leads. Having a good database is a common weakness in most businesses. Be different - Challenge the status quo, get out of your comfort zone, do things differently and stretch your abilities. Stretching your abilities will make you great. Take action and just do it! - If you have an idea that you really believe in, do something about it. Unless you take action, your idea will remain worthless. Miré was awarded WP road cycling colours on 2 September for her achievement during the 2015 SA Road Championships in Nelspruit earlier this year. She now holds WP colours for both road and mountain biking. After her performances in the Junior Ladies category during the 2015 Western Cape Road and Time Trial championships held in Oudtshoorn, she was selected for the Western Cape road cycling team. This team will participate in the CSA Interprovincial road cycling championships from 5 – 8 October in Bloemfontein. As from the 1st of October, Miré will join the LEADout Cycling Academy and she will be trained by Barry Austin. She is very excited about this opportunity as Barry will prepare her for the 2016 SA Road championships early next year

“Each XTERRA event will follow the exact same format in 2016,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports. “Event weekends will start as follows: the XTERRA kids on the Friday, followed by the XTERRA Full on the Saturday and finally the XTERRA Lite on the Sunday. We are really looking forward to our Port Elizabeth introduction. The venue lends itself to becoming one of the most exciting events on the calendar, not forgetting that XTERRA Port Elizabeth will be the only XTERRA SA event to feature an ocean swim.”

Wines2whales Entry - A Dream Come True for Greyton Local Nineteen year old Caleb Henderson had a dream come true when the organisers of the FNB Wines2Whales (W2W) Mountain Bike (MTB) Events granted him a complimentary entry into the FNB W2W MTB Ride. The FNB W2W MTB Ride will start at the picturesque Lourensford Wine Estate (Somerset West) on 2 November 2015. Riders will cross through (and over) 13 wineries, 26 private farms, six mountains, historic roads and mountain passes and nature conservation areas (including the Kogelberg Biosphere) before finishing within sight of the famous whales of Hermanus on 4 November 2015. “We are truly grateful to FNB W2W for Caleb’s entry,” says Owen Henderson. “Caleb was diagnosed as being deaf at birth. At the age of two he was fitted with hearing aids and attended the Carel du Toit School for the hearing impaired, where he was taught to speak. When Caleb started school he was diagnosed with Tuberous Sclerosis (calcification of parts of the brain) and Autism. Although unable to read, he progressed through school with the help of a facilitator and very supportive and dedicated teachers until he left school at the age of fifteen.”

“Despite his disabilities he has made a life for himself,” continues Henderson. “At present he is helping at Greyton House Village School. He enjoys sport and puts this to use by helping with school sport in the afternoons.”

“Caleb has developed a love for cycling which enables him to participate in a sport where his disabilities do not hold him back. Corne Barnard of Rockhopper Adventures encouraged Caleb to fulfil his dream of completing W2W. Corne will be Caleb’s riding partner.” According to Caleb it’s the hard work, training and technique that attracts him to the sport of mountain biking. “I love that each route is different as this allows me to improve my skill. W2W is important to me because it will be my first big race. It will really challenge and test the hard work that I have put in thus far.” “I am mostly looking forward to finishing with my partner, but am also really excited to see my finishing time after each stage. I plan on working hard. It is my responsibility to finish what I have started.” “We are aware that the FNB W2W competitors come from all levels of ability. We welcome Caleb to fulfill his challenge and wish him the best of luck,” says Dezroy Poole, FNB W2W MTB Director. A three day stage MTB race, participants can choose between the fun-filled FNB W2W MTB Adventure, a slightly more relaxed FNB W2W MTB Ride and the action-packed FNB W2W MTB Race from 30 October to 8 November 2015. ENTRIES OPEN FOR SANLAM CAPE MILE Entries are open for the Western Cape’s most exciting open water swim, the Sanlam Cape Mile. Returning to the Eikenhof Dam at the picturesque Grabouw Country Club on Sunday, 7 February 2016 entrants can choose between an exhilarating 1 mile (1.6km) and a refreshing 500m swim.

“The Sanlam Cape Mile was tremendously well received in its maiden year,” says Michael Mayer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports. “With just over 1000 entrants in 2015 and an exciting sprint finish between Elite entrants Danie Marais and Myles Brown, the inaugural event could not have ended on a higher note.” “We look forward to building on this excitement and invite swimmers to come enjoy a memorable experience that is sure to be rivaled by no other.” “It was fantastic to see so many participants taking on the challenge alongside some of the country’s leading swimmers in the Cape Mile last year. It was also heart-warming to see the huge number of spectators, family and friends who came along to support their loved ones,” says Johan van der Merwe, CEO: Sanlam Investments. “I have no doubt that with our Sanlam sponsorship we can grow the Sanlam Cape Mile into one of SA’s premier open-water swims.”
