Life-Saving Treatment to Thousands of Children

With a dire shortage of paediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds in South Africa, a R100 million-plus expansion and upgrade of the Paediatric ICU (PICU) at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital will significantly improve intensive care services given to critically ill and injured children. Capacity will also be greatly increased, addressing the desperate need for more beds to treat the country’s littlest patients.

Construction has officially begun on the unit, which is expected to be completed

by October 2017. The new PICU will be able to accommodate extra patients in need. The 22-bed facility will increase to 39 bed spaces, which will include an urgently needed 10-bed High Care Unit for neonates as well as isolation cubicles.

The high care unit and the isolation cubicles will ensure optimal treatment through better infection control, which is critical in ICU. The expansion and upgrade will also create a comfortable and supportive space for parents as well as breastfeeding mothers. Currently, family members have no privacy or space between life-saving equipment as they sit vigil at their child’s side.

Increased space will also mean that staff who work very long hours saving lives in tough conditions, will have adequate accommodation. These staff members work tirelessly to provide clinical, educational and research services.

Full-moon picnics are scheduled from November to 20 February 2016. At the Stargazing picnics from November to 12 March 2016 visitors can discover the night skies through the telescopes of the Orion Observation Group (OOG), an informal stargazing club from the Boland. The musical “Die Sideboard”, can be seen on 11 December 2015. On 27 December 2015 The Psychedelic Theatre’s fire dancers will once again perform their popular “Dans van die Vlamme” show at the monument. On 31 December 2015 the Monument will host a New Year’s Eve Picnic, with a cannon firing at 24h00. Picnic flicks on the big screen are planned for January to March 2016. A Valentine’s Picnic will be held on 14 February 2016.

“Our picnics are affordable and offer unbeatable sunset and night-time views of the valley,” says Jack Louw, Director of the Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en -monument. The picnic series is an important way of raising funds for projects.”

Freshlyground Kicks Off Elgin’s Hope@ Paulcluver Summer Concerts Elgin’s very own forest amphitheatre at Paul Cluver Wines is gearing up to launch its first event for the Hope@PaulCluver season. The beloved South African band Freshlyground will be the opening concert beneath the stars on 14 November 2015.

Also supporting Freshlygound is singer Paige Mac (from Studio 7) as well as Zion Zuke (from Africa Voices Trust).

Hope@PaulCluver has partnered with Africa Voices Trust and the Rural Arts Network to include more local and undiscovered talent.

The marimba talents of the local De Rust School (via Rural Arts Network) and the voices of the ladies at ThembaCare Grabouw Hospice will form part of the programme on 14 November.

Set in a cluster of towering Eucalyptus trees, the intimate venue is ideal for friends and families to bring along cushions and blankets and settle into the unreserved seating - where everyone in the audience will find themselves up close with the action.

Patrons can bring their own picnics or purchase food at the event.

Swedish Pilot Heads to Cape of Good Hope Swedish adventurer and SAS airline pilot Johan Wiklund continues his remarkable journey, flying his antique De Havilland DH60 Moth from the North Cape in Norway to the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. He’s not just in it for the adventure - Cape to Cape will donate all proceeds after costs to the “Make Reading Cool” initiative for schoolchildren in Red Hill, South Africa.

The trip echoes the feat of another dedicated aviator, Gösta Andrée, who started his Cape journey from Barkarby Airfield outside Stockholm in a similar Moth biplane on 12 September 1929. In fact, Wiklund is using similar technology and is even wearing a copy of Andrée’s flying garb – a brown suit jacket and pants.

“Andrée’s flight was unprecedented. He didn’t have GPS or other high-tech equipment,” Wiklund says. “With only maps and a compass to rely on, he flew thousands of miles an open-cockpit biplane, over relatively unknown territory. Andrée overcame challenges, made new friends, learned new things, and seems to have had great fun too. I plan to do the same.”

Wiklund took off 1 September from Barkarby Airfield in a restored 1935 open-cockpit Moth biplane with a flightplan through Europe to Crete, on to Egypt, continuing with stops in countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Botswana before he will land at Stellenbosch Airfield where he will be met by Cape Town-based charity Children’s Book Network together with a group of schoolage children from Red Hill settlement outside Simon’s Town.

Cape to Cape has set up its own crowdfunding initiative on FundedByMe to finance the flight and raise money for the Children’s Book Network project “Make Reading Cool”. The project funds tools, workshops and books for schoolchildren with limited resources.

Commenting on becoming a beneficiary of Cape-to-Cape 2015, Lesley Beake, co-founder of the Children’s Book Network, said: “Our goal is to bring books to children and children to books by making reading fun and exciting as well as useful.

“The children will be part of a workshop on courage – in life as well as in small aeroplanes - with singer-poet Blaq Pearl. They will write their own song of welcome to the pilot. We hope to bring to them an understanding of bravery in small aspects of life as well as big adventures. Children demonstrate courage every day, in everything they do.”

Lesley added: “Joining us at this special event will be Michael, a boy from Red Hill, who during a workshop three years ago told us that he wanted to be a pilot. He will be presenting a small donation of South African books for children to read in Sweden and will also have a chance to go up in the plane.”

Life-Saving Treatment to Thousands of Children (Continue from page 1) Currently the 22-bed PICU at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital is the largest ICU for children in Africa. It provides emergency care for critically ill or injured children from within the Western Cape as well as the rest of South Africa and the African continent.

There is a dire need to boost its capacity due to the growing demand for ICU beds in the country. This demand is driven by the increases in surgery requirements and escalations in detection of serious illnesses. In essence, the demands on this unit are higher than its capacity to deliver.

The Children’s Hospital Trust, which is fundraising for the R100 million-plus project, works alongside Western Cape Government Health.

Government will contribute R30 million towards the ICU. The budget includes building costs as well as equipment needed for the unit.

The ground-breaking marks the start of what is set to be an impressive project, addressing the needs of little patients who need intensive care services.

Currently, the absence of isolation units in the PICU increases the risk of cross infection, which can compromise the healing process of critically ill children. Furthermore, there is a dire need for a specifically designed area for neonatal care. In early 2016, the Trust will roll out a public appeal to raise the final R10 million for the upgrade and expansion of the Paediatric ICU.

Tour of Good Hope Receives Official CSA Sanction The 2016 Bestmed Tour of Good Hope, presented by Rudy Project, is the biggest and only Western Cape road tour to be officially sanctioned

by Cycling South Africa for next season.

The five-day tour, which starts in Paarl on 29 February will take a thousand riders on a 515km journey through the Cape Winelands, with racing categories for professional and amateur teams.

Wagener said the event was ideally positioned as the only sanctioned tour ahead of the Cape Town Cycle Tour.

“It takes place shortly after SA road champs, so the competitive riders should be in good racing form, and it’s also excellent preparation for the Cape Town Cycle Tour, which happens two days after the Tour of Good Hope comes to an end.”

“The Cape Epic starts three weeks later and it’s a great chance to come and ride this area and to get in some good endurance training with long days in the saddle.”

He said the cloverleaf racing format through the Paarl/Franschhoek valley made the event a logistical dream for participants.

Newly appointed tour director Hendrik Wagener said the CSA rubber stamp signified that all of the correct structures were in place and that all aspects of the tour, including safety, complied with national standards.

“All our plans are in place, and because it will be an official event on the CSA national calendar, their officials and commissaires will oversee the event.

Wagener said organisers had already lodged an application for UCI accreditation, but were still waiting for an official response from the international body.

“In South Africa, we are short on UCI tours for our riders to earn Olympic qualifying points.

“Because it takes place in the European off-season, the Tour of Good Hope could also become an attractive proposition to international teams.”

The racing comprises four road stages plus a time-trial.

Gansbaai - Bredasdorp Road to Unlock Economic Potential in Overberg During Transport Month the completion of the upgraded Gansbaai to Bredasdorp road was celebrated. This R277 million project spanned a construction period of 32 months with a total of 62.6kms of high quality, surfaced road connecting the community of Gansbaai to Bredasdorp and surrounds.

The project consisted of the construction of a new and wider surfaced road, upgrading of the stormwater system, upgrading of the historic towns of Elim and Baardskedersbosch, construction of a new bridge over Uilenkraals and the construction of two low water causeways.

Elim has become known for the export of fynbos, and as an

emerging area in the production of wine. Both industries will benefit greatly from this upgraded road and improved infrastructure.

With the project having now been completed, many residents and businesses in the area will look forward to the many benefits that will come their way.

La Paris Festival in The Valley La Paris Estate with its luscious gardens and manicured lawns is situated only 8km outside the picturesque town of Franschhoek. La Paris dates back to 1699 when Willem Adriaan van der Stel as a newly appointed governor awarded the farm to Francois Retief. The French Hugenot later married Marie Mouij. They became the founders of the Retief family in South Africa. Francois named the farm La Paris which was both nostalgic and filled with hopes for the future. They farmed with wheat, vineyards and livestock.

La Paris has been the home to various families and activities over the years and has been responsible for many happy memories. The stories told by Italian families celebrating life under the Oak trees in the 1950’s being just some of them.

In 2004 Michael and Sjaan Rodenburg and their son, Sebastian fell in love with a still beautiful but derelict farm. The old Manor House framed by Oak trees with the Mountain behind it captured their hearts. In 2013 the Rodenburg’s moved to La Paris permanently and started to develop La Paris into that Grand dream that had its humble beginnings in 1699.

Family Care for Orphaned Children In 1998, Acres of Love provided family care to children orphaned in South Africa, rescuing over 400 children. Maintaining entrepreneurial model of family care and the belief that the complex needs of orphans require individualized care has grown to 24 Forever Family Homes in Johannesburg, and in the last two years, four family homes in the Cape. Many children placed in Acres of Love homes have moderate to severe special needs including paralysis, hearing impairments, hydrocephalus, FAS, HIV, TB, Down Syndrome, Autism, and Cerebral Palsy.

Situated in quiet neighborhoods in Somerset West and the Strand, these homes are warm and inviting with well-kept gardens and tidy exteriors. Inside, family photos line the walls, children’s toys are collected in baskets, and kitchens are well stocked with local fruit and veg that accompany every meal.

Each child has their own bed, complete with warm linen and stuffed toys on their pillow. The most impactful thing in an Acres of Love home is the way the children are thriving.

Allergies Costing SA Economy over Half A Billion Per Year The cost of allergies to the South African economy is in excess of R606-million a year with healthcare expenditure and lost productivity being the biggest contributing factors.

Experts warn that should the unmet needs and strategies to prevent the burgeoning “allergy epidemic” not be addressed, it could soon overwhelm the country’s already fragile healthcare system.

Wilmi Hudsonberg, spokesperson of leading allergy pharmaceutical firm, Pharma Dynamics says: “This is largely due to a very low base of registered allergists in the country – of which there are only ten – and only four dedicated allergy clinics at Pietersburg Hospital (Limpopo), Tygerberg Hospital, Groote Schuur Hospital and the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town.”

SA’s current allergy rates among children and young adults are as follows: 1.8 million children in SA have asthma, while the most recent International Study on Asthma and Allergy in Childhood, which examined eczema and allergic rhinitis in teenagers, found that 33.2% experienced problems with allergic rhinitis and 11.9% suffered from eczema. Food allergy data is scant, but a study conducted by the South African Food Sensitisation and Food Allergy has preliminary data showing a true food allergy rate at 2.5% among 1 – 3 year-olds.

Free Mediation Week

South African patients with allergies currently spend over R480-million a year across allergy medications, and unit sales figures from last year to this year have more than doubled – pointing to a significant increase in allergic conditions in the country.

Over the last few decades the field of alternative dispute resolution has grown tremendously with the recognition that not all cases are well suited for the adversarial process and that there are multiple paths to justice is increasingly shared by attorneys, judges, and the public.

The Family Mediators’ Association of the Cape (FAMAC) is offering a “free mediation week” as an initiative in celebration of the strides FAMAC has made in institutionalising mediation as one of several appropriate dispute resolution processes.

During the week of 26-30 October 2015 a single family mediation session can be free for both people whether they qualify for legal aid or not.

This initiative has been brought in to encourage more people to try mediation rather than head off straight to court. The professional mediators will mediate settlement agreements and parenting plans between the parties, either pre or post divorce. Mediation is usually much quicker, cheaper and less stressful than the legal route, and seven out of ten people are able to reach full agreement using family mediation.

Is a Non-Compete Between an Employer and an Employee enforceable?

When an Employee-Employer-relationship is terminated, albeit due to the Employee resigning or as a result of dismissal, or the like, the inevitable question arises: “Are non-compete agreements enforceable?”

The answer is yes, but with certain qualifications.

Under certain circumstances a Court may not always be amenable to enforce a non-compete agreement. Although our Courts generally enforce agreements when necessary to protect a contracting parties’ interests, such protection are afforded whilst taking into consideration the surrounding circumstances and the effect enforcing or exempting a party from a non-compete clause in an Employment agreement would have on both parties.

It is therefore clear that all laws and therefore also the common law principals, which underlies the law of Contract, applicable when any contractual aspect arises, are therefore subject to our Constitution and to the premise that every person has the fundamental right to choose and practice any occupation.

An agreement “not to compete” generally is a promise that the employee will not engage in business competitive with that of the employer during and for a certain time period following termination of employment and may be defined to be limited for a specific area. Such undertakings are often accompanied by a promise “not to solicit” the employer’s customers (“non-solicitation”) and “not to disclose” the employer’s confidential business information (“non-disclosure”).

The underlying consideration shall always be that every person has the fundamental right of freedom, freedom to choose their trade, occupation, profession and freedom to practice such trade, occupation or profession. Of course such freedoms as is defined and stipulated in our Constitution may be regulated and limited by the law. Where it is necessary to protect another’s rights or where no real protectable interests are at stake, where the restrictions are unreasonable, or where the employer has undermined its ability to enforce the rights, by for example engaging in “selective enforcement” of such agreements, a Court may very well not enforce the non-compete Agreement.

Each person’s fundamental rights to freedom of trade, occupation and profession are recognized in our Constitution, with the Supremacy of the Constitution defined as follows: “This Constitution is the supreme law of the Republic; law or conduct inconsistent with it is invalid, and the obligations imposed by it must be fulfilled. Chapter 2 deals with the BILL OF RIGHTS and in its application states that: “The Bill of Rights applies to all law, and binds the legislature, the executive, the judiciary and all organs of state. A provision of the Bill of Rights binds a natural or a juristic person if, and to the extent that, it is applicable, taking into account the nature of the right and the nature of any duty imposed by the right. When applying a provision of the Bill of Rights to a natural or juristic person a court, in order to give effect to a right in the Bill, must apply, or if necessary develop, the common law to the extent that legislation does not give effect to that right; and may develop rules of the common law to limit the right.”

Because a non-compete is a “restrictive pledge,” i.e., ­a promise by an employee not to engage in certain behavior that is contrary to the employer’s interests, for it to be enforceable, a non-compete must be (i) necessary to protect certain employer interests, (ii) reasonable in time and scope, (iii) legal and consistent with public interest and (iv) supported by consideration. The Courts distinguish two key protectable employer interests: an employer’s relationship with customers, clients and vendors (also called “good will”) and confidential business information, such as for instance trade secrets.

Goodwill encompasses a variety of intangibles, including market position and reputation. Confidential business information encompasses commercially valuable information or necessary business specific information, not generally known outside of the company, which the company has taken reasonable measures to protect.

Only in the event that good will or confidential business information requires protection can an Employer prevent an Employee from competing with the Employer, as was agreed in the non-compete agreement. In other words non-competes can be used to prevent unfair competition (involving misappropriation of good will or confidential business information) but cannot be used to prevent ordinary, everyday, competition. All persons are allowed and indeed entitled to compete with one another, as they have the right of freedom to choose and practice any trade, occupation or profession.

An Employer should therefore carefully consider whether it is necessary to restrict an employee’s right to freedom of trade, occupation or profession by entering into a non-compete agreement and an Employee should likewise consider whether such restrictions are necessary, under the circumstances and what such restrictions should contain to be reasonable in time and scope, legal and consistent with public interest and if supported by consideration. As such it is advisable to contact a legal Practitioner to prepare a non-compete that will be legally enforceable.

Top Honours at 2015 South African Magic Championships In one fell swoop, two of Cape Town’s top magicians, Stuart Lightbody and Olwethu Dyantyi took top honours at the 2015 South African Magic Championships, held at GrandWest recently.

Going wand to wand against dozens of their nationwide competitors, Lightbody (31) and Dyantyi (21) impressed judges and delegates alike with their captivating acts, claiming first place in the Close-up Magic and Stage Magic contests respectively. Dyantyi also clinched the coveted Grand Prix title, a prize awarded to the magical competitor who scores 85% and above for their acts.

Hosted by the College of Magic, the Mother City’s only magical arts organisation, the 2015 South African Magic Championships is a triennial event held to select the best magician nationwide. This year’s activities saw GrandWest transformed into the ultimate magic convention venue with series of exhilarating contests, demonstrations, panel discussions, gala magic shows and more.

This 2015 victory marks the second time Lightbody, a Claremont resident, has claimed the SA Magic Champion title since 2005. With several international accolades, including Weekly Best of Fest Award at the Adelaide Fringe Festival and the Creative Award at the Prague Fringe Festival beneath his wand too, the psychological illusionist is elated with his latest triumph: Likewise, rising magical star Dyantyi has been floating on air since his double win. Having just returned from performing at a festival in Beijing, snagging the 2015 Stage Magic Champion and Grand Prix titles are a dream come true for the township youth.

Four Stellenbosch Wine Icons Go Back to their Pinotage Roots Four of South Africa’s iconic Pinotage producers, all part of the Stellenbosch Wine Routes, have joined forces to create the Pinotage Root of South Africa, the first demarcated wine experience centred round the grape variety with which the South African wine industry has become synonymous.

The four wine farms are part of the lexicon of premier South African wines, with the Pinotage Root comprising Simonsig Estate, Kanonkop, Beyerskloof and L’Avenir, all recognised as the crème de la crème of Pinotage producers. Not only have these wineries been top performers in the history of the Top 10 Pinotage Competition, but their role in promoting the country’s Pinotage pedigree has been at the forefront of South Africa’s wine narrative over the past few years.

According to Annareth Bolton, CEO of the Stellenbosch Wine Routes, the Pinotage Root was formed to provide a unique experience for wine lovers wishing to focus on wines made from the country’s best-known indigenous grape variety.

The relative close proximity of the L’Avenir, Kanonkop, Simonsig and Beyerskloof allows the visitor easy access to the best Pinotage wines in South Africa within a day-trip. Each farm will be offering visitors a selection of five Pinotage wines from their cellars, with various culinary offerings varying from snacks to gourmet restaurant meals laid on.

Received International Blue Flag Status

Lufthansa Flights Increased!

Now Flying Daily to Cape Town

As a major achievement by municipalities in the Western Cape, 49 beaches, marinas and boats received the international Blue Flag Status. In total 84 Blue Flags were given to South Africa of which more than half were in the Western Cape.

The commendable achievements of the stakeholders responsible for the success of these beaches were formally acknowledged with the presentation of awards at the launch event for the 2015/16 Blue Flag Season at Grotto Beach in Hermanus recently. The Blue Flag is an international award given to beaches that meets strict criteria of excellence in the areas of safety, amenities, cleanliness and environmental standards.

Congratulations to all of the winners, especially Grotto Beach in Hermanus who won the Gold Status this year.

Western Cape beaches that received Silver Status are Clifton’s 4th Beach, Bikini Beach in Gordonsbay, Kleinmond, Hawston and Lappiesbaai (Stilbaai). Bronze Status were given to Silwerstroomstrand, Camps Bay, Llandudno, Muizenberg, Mnandi, Witsand, Santos (Mossel Bay), Hartenbos, Robberg 5 and Keurboomstrand.

The Blue Flag Status is important for promoting tourism, boosting the economic growth and contributing to permanent job creation in the province. However, one of the most importantly attributes is the creating of proud citizens and an overall awareness of the importance of the environmental and the preservation thereof.

City Hires Lifeguards to Ensure Safety of Beach Users

Lufthansa is increasing its service between Cape Town and Munich from five weekly non-stop flights to a daily schedule. The seasonal service, valid from 25 October 2015 until 27 March 2016, links the Bavarian capital to the mother city and is operated using the A340-600. For local business and leisure travelers this means tapping into a growing network of European and intercontinental flights from Lufthansa’s Bavarian Hub. Lufthansa’s intercontinental fleet overhaul, equating to a daily 1 million invested in both onboard and ground products is in its final stretch and customers are now being offered the new Premium Economy Class which compliments the retrofitted First and Business Class cabins. The new Premium Economy Class seats offer up to 50 percent more room than Economy Class and positions Lufthansa as a leader in offering premium service in all four classes of service.

“Launched just 18 months ago, Lufthansa’s newest cabin of service has already become a benchmark in quality and service for passengers interested in upgrading their travel experience,” notes Andre Schulz, Lufthansa’s General Manager for South Africa.

The City of Cape Town’s Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department is employing permanent and seasonal lifeguards in order to improve beach safety over the holiday season.

During the spring school holiday 12 permanent lifeguards and over 100 seasonal lifeguards, 100 beach monitors were deployed. The team of lifeguards and beach monitors will be on duty at the various beaches between 08:00 and 16:30 over weekends until the peak season.

An essential requirement for appointment as a beach lifeguard is the possession of a valid Lifeguard Award, as well as experience in Surf Lifesaving.

The 100 beach monitors are in addition to the many law enforcement personnel who vigilantly patrol the City’s beaches and assist lifeguards in preventing drowning incidents. The beach monitors will be responsible for helping to prevent irresponsible and dangerous behaviour along the coastline. These monitors will patrol the areas of coastline not covered by lifeguard services in order to prevent people from swimming in areas where there are no lifeguards present. The presence of these beach monitors is crucial if the City is to effectively prevent drowning incidents.

The following hotspot beaches will be covered by lifeguards on weekends: Clifton, Camps Bay, Fish Hoek, Muizenberg, Kogel Bay, Strand, Macassar, Monwabisi, Mnandi, Strandfontein and Blue Waters.

During the peak summer season, this service will be boosted by accredited members of lifesaving clubs and the National Sea Rescue Institute.

He further adds that Lufthansa’s new cabin service offers a seat pitch which is up to three centimetres wider depending on the type of aircraft. The separate wide armrest for each seat and the centre console between the seats ensure extra privacy and thus a total of about 10 centimetres more space to the side. The seat back can be tilted further and the seat spacing is much more generous at 97cm.

The adjustable headrest can be folded at the sides to give comfort and support.

Premium Economy also offers leg support and foot rests to provide which differ slightly in design depending on the row configuration.

With two pieces of luggage up to 23 kgs, each passenger has twice as much free baggage allowance as standard Economy Class allowance.

Cape West Coast tourism Sector Boosted by New Routes Recent numbers compiled by Wesgro Research reveal that the Cape West Coast has experienced a constant increase in tourist numbers to the region. Lately, the allure of the region has been boosted by the development of new routes with the likes of Langebaan attracting over 30,000 visitors to its respective attractions during December 2014, largely owed to the growing popularity of these routes.

The 2014 Cape West Coast visitor trends reflected a growing share in respondents who indicated overnight stays. The summer season saw visitors to the region staying on average one (24.2%) and two (41.0%) nights.

During the same period visitors spent on average R500-R1000 on accommodation and spent the same amount daily on various other purchases.

The growing popularity in the heritage-inspired Groenekloof Route and the BlueBenguela Leisure Route is underlined by the activities indicated by visitors during the 2014/15 summer season; with scenic drives (30.8%), gourmet restaurants (15.1%), outdoor activities (13.6%), culture/heritage (11.4%) and fishing (4.0%) ranking as the top five activities enjoyed in the Cape West Coast.

Basson adds that delicate perfume vials, porcelain dinnerware (with the White Star Line logo), personal belongings, postcards, pieces of the ship and numerous other items recreating the lost era will be available to view. Certain areas have also been created to mimic the rooms of Titanic.

Children of all ages can look forward to a downloadable educational curriculum, kiddies artifact map (weekly prizes to be won), a live iceberg and the Kiddies Activation Zone with a Titanic jumping castle, Titanic PlayStation Zone, Titanic Lego building tables, Titanic sand pits and Titanic ocean tanks.

Authentic artifacts recovered from the famous shipwreck of the Titanic will be displayed for the first time in South Africa when Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition opens in Johannesburg during September, followed by the V&A Waterfront from 27 November 2015 to 14 February 2016.

Educational, emotional and appropriate for all ages, Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition will take visitors on a journey through the life of Titanic. The Exhibition has been designed with a focus on the legendary ship’s compelling human stories.

Those attending will find out about the lives of South Africans that were on board Titanic, learn about passengers and crew members, admire a recreated iceberg installed at the exhibition and relive the events of that fatal night.

Says Marius Basson, director of Manic Global and organiser of the event: “Visitors will be drawn back in time to April 1912 when the ship embarked on its maiden voyage.

Adults in turn can shop at the extensive merchandise shop, sample specially made “White Star” ranges of beer and wines, order a Titanic tea or coffee package and experience an authentic dining experience that recreates what life was like on board the ship in 1912.

Basson concludes: “People of all ages will benefit as we celebrate and remember all those whose lives were lost or changed by one of the biggest maritime disasters that mankind witnessed in modern history. It shouldn’t be missed and we’re very proud to present it in South Africa.”

Discover Art Franschhoek at this year’s Art in Clay As with good food and outstanding wines, so too fine art needs to be savoured in order to be appreciated. Regarded as SA’s premier food and wine destination, Franschhoek has added art destination to its résumé.

Home to some of the country’s finest art offerings and a growing number of local and international art enthusiasts, a need arose to establish Art Franschhoek, which will be launched at this year’s Art in Clay exhibitions. A highlight on the Franschhoek events calendar, Art in Clay, which runs from 24 October to 30 November this year, features a grouping of six exceptional art galleries in and around Franschhoek, featuring the extensive range of work by leading ceramic artists.

The largest room in the museum is dedicated to the life and art of one of South Africa’s greatest masters, Jacob Hendrik Pierneef. A selection of contemporary art by other distinguished South African artists can also be viewed.

EBONY showcases classic and contemporary paintings and artworks by some of the most recognised and collectible South African artists.

With spaces in Franschhoek and Cape Town it has a respected and vibrant exhibition program. Ebony also participates at various Art Fairs throughout the year.

EBONY represents the artists Richard Smith, Zemba Luzamba, Kufa Makwavarara, Oliver Barnett, Jean – Claude Moschetti and Hugh Byrne and collaborates with many other artists and galleries. Calling all beer lovers! South Africa’s largest and most popular beer festival, the Cape Town Festival of Beer is back to rock the Mother City at Hamilton’s Rugby club in Greenpoint from 27 - 29 November 2015.

The videos are a direct response to the “Travel like a Local” trend; visitors want to experience the places they travel in ways that expose them to the quirky and interesting features enjoyed by locals.
