Life-Saving Treatment to Thousands of Children

With a dire shortage of paediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds in South Africa, a R100 million-plus expansion and upgrade of the Paediatric ICU (PICU) at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital will significantly improve intensive care services given to critically ill and injured children. Capacity will also be greatly increased, addressing the desperate need for more beds to treat the country’s littlest patients. Construction has officially begun on the unit, which is expected to be completed by October 2017. The new PICU will be able to accommodate extra patients in need. The 22-bed facility will increase to 39 bed spaces, which will include an urgently needed 10-bed High Care Unit for neonates as well as isolation cubicles. The high care unit and the isolation cubicles will ensure optimal treatment through better infection control, which is critical in ICU. The expansion and upgrade will also create a comfortable and supportive space for parents as well as breastfeeding mothers. Currently, family members have no privacy or space between life-saving equipment as they sit vigil at their child’s side. Increased space will also mean that staff who work very long hours saving lives in tough conditions, will have adequate accommodation. These staff members work tirelessly to provide clinical, educational and research services.

What can be better than easing out of the weekend and into a new week than with music that satisfies the most diverse of tastes? Where the venue is so spectacularly beautiful that Sunday takes on a whole new ambience? Where friends and family gather their picnic baskets and blankets to enjoy the floral heritage and the mountain as the music rolls over them. The Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts offer all this and more from 22 November through to 3 April, 2016 with a magnificent line–up offering something for every taste. The tradition of top local and international artists appearing on this stage continues in this botanical garden that highlights the Western Cape’s rich floral heritage and at the same time showcases worldclass entertainment in an environment second to none.

Swedish Pilot Heads to Cape of Good Hope Swedish adventurer and SAS airline pilot Johan Wiklund continues his remarkable journey, flying his antique De Havilland DH60 Moth from the North Cape in Norway to the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. He’s not just in it for the adventure - Cape to Cape will donate all proceeds after costs to the “Make Reading Cool” initiative for schoolchildren in Red Hill, South Africa. The trip echoes the feat of another dedicated aviator, Gösta Andrée, who started his Cape journey from Barkarby Airfield outside Stockholm in a similar Moth biplane on 12 September 1929. In fact, Wiklund is using similar technology and is even wearing a copy of Andrée’s flying garb – a brown suit jacket and pants. “Andrée’s flight was unprecedented. He didn’t have GPS or other high-tech equipment,” Wiklund says. “With only maps and a compass to rely on, he flew thousands of miles an open-cockpit biplane, over relatively unknown territory. Andrée overcame challenges, made new friends, learned new things, and seems to have had great fun too. I plan to do the same.” Wiklund took off 1 September from Barkarby Airfield in a restored 1935 open-cockpit Moth biplane with a flightplan through Europe to Crete, on to Egypt, continuing with stops in countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Botswana before he will land at Stellenbosch Airfield where he will be met by Cape Town-based charity Children’s Book Network together with a group of schoolage children from Red Hill settlement outside Simon’s Town. Cape to Cape has set up its own crowdfunding initiative on FundedByMe to finance the flight and raise money for the Children’s Book Network project “Make Reading Cool”. The project funds tools, workshops and books for schoolchildren with limited resources.

Commenting on becoming a beneficiary of Cape-to-Cape 2015, Lesley Beake, co-founder of the Children’s Book Network, said: “Our goal is to bring books to children and children to books by making reading fun and exciting as well as useful. “The children will be part of a workshop on courage – in life as well as in small aeroplanes - with singer-poet Blaq Pearl. They will write their own song of welcome to the pilot. We hope to bring to them an understanding of bravery in small aspects of life as well as big adventures. Children demonstrate courage every day, in everything they do.” Lesley added: “Joining us at this special event will be Michael, a boy from Red Hill, who during a workshop three years ago told us that he wanted to be a pilot. He will be presenting a small donation of South African books for children to read in Sweden and will also have a chance to go up in the plane.” For more information visit www.capetocape.net

Life-Saving Treatment to Thousands of Children (Continue from page 1) Currently the 22-bed PICU at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital is the largest ICU for children in Africa. It provides emergency care for critically ill or injured children from within the Western Cape as well as the rest of South Africa and the African continent. There is a dire need to boost its capacity due to the growing demand for ICU beds in the country. This demand is driven by the increases in surgery requirements and escalations in detection of serious illnesses. In essence, the demands on this unit are higher than its capacity to deliver. The Children’s Hospital Trust, which is fundraising for the R100 million-plus project, works alongside Western Cape Government Health.

Government will contribute R30 million towards the ICU. The budget includes building costs as well as equipment needed for the unit. The ground-breaking marks the start of what is set to be an impressive project, addressing the needs of little patients who need intensive care services. Currently, the absence of isolation units in the PICU increases the risk of cross infection, which can compromise the healing process of critically ill children. Furthermore, there is a dire need for a specifically designed area for neonatal care. In early 2016, the Trust will roll out a public appeal to raise the final R10 million for the upgrade and expansion of the Paediatric ICU.

Tour of Good Hope Receives Official CSA Sanction The 2016 Bestmed Tour of Good Hope, presented by Rudy Project, is the biggest and only Western Cape road tour to be officially sanctioned by Cycling South Africa for next season. The five-day tour, which starts in Paarl on 29 February will take a thousand riders on a 515km journey through the Cape Winelands, with racing categories for professional and amateur teams.

We’re building something really special, a proper national road tour, for the future here.” Wagener said the event was ideally positioned as the only sanctioned tour ahead of the Cape Town Cycle Tour. “It takes place shortly after SA road champs, so the competitive riders should be in good racing form, and it’s also excellent preparation for the Cape Town Cycle Tour, which happens two days after the Tour of Good Hope comes to an end.” “The Cape Epic starts three weeks later and it’s a great chance to come and ride this area and to get in some good endurance training with long days in the saddle.” He said the cloverleaf racing format through the Paarl/Franschhoek valley made the event a logistical dream for participants.

Newly appointed tour director Hendrik Wagener said the CSA rubber stamp signified that all of the correct structures were in place and that all aspects of the tour, including safety, complied with national standards. “All our plans are in place, and because it will be an official event on the CSA national calendar, their officials and commissaires will oversee the event.

Wagener said organisers had already lodged an application for UCI accreditation, but were still waiting for an official response from the international body. “In South Africa, we are short on UCI tours for our riders to earn Olympic qualifying points. “Because it takes place in the European off-season, the Tour of Good Hope could also become an attractive proposition to international teams.” The racing comprises four road stages plus a time-trial.

Hirsch’s Homestore opened its doors for the first time in the Helderberg on Friday 16 October with sales exceeded all expectations. The previous evening saw the official launch of the store with invited guests. True to their professionalism Emer Zavaroni, Sales Manager for Africa and Australia from Smeg Italy and the South African directors were present to celebrate the opening of the new store with the Hirsch family. Hirsch’s started as a repair company in Kwa Zulu-Natal way back in 1979 and their name is still synonymous with the best service in the country. Hirsch’s has graduated to Gauteng and eventually opened their first store in Milnerton in the Western Cape. The success at the Hirsch’s Homestore Milnerton branch exceeded all expectations which resulted in the opening of the Somerset West Hirsch’s Homestore. Within weeks of purchasing the property they revamped the structure to meet the Hirsch’s Homestore Brand requirements, and were able open the Homestore 6 months earlier than anticipated. The Hirsch’s would like to thank the community of Somerset West on welcoming them into the area and they hope to be of service to everyone for many years to come. Hirsch’s Homestore is South Africa’s leading independent appliance retailer and is presently selling the highest volume of Smeg products within South Africa. The Newspaper visited two of the Smeg Factories in Italy on a four-day visit which included the Head Office, factory in Guastalla near Reggio Emilia as well as the factory in Chieti in the south of Italy - displaying products of the highest standard of engineering. Their architectural brilliance has made them the number one manufacturer of products of excellence, appealing to the eye, not to mention their environment friendly approach in energy conservation. It is these little extras that create the desire to invest in a Smeg product – it remains a top quality product and a good investment to any prospect client.

Gansbaai - Bredasdorp Road to Unlock Economic Potential in Overberg During Transport Month the completion of the upgraded Gansbaai to Bredasdorp road was celebrated. This project will serve as a constant reminder of ongoing commitment to delivering key infrastructure to all regions in the Western Cape, thereby triggering the realization of the area’s economic potential. This R277 million project spanned a construction period of 32 months with a total of 62.6kms of high quality, surfaced road connecting the community of Gansbaai to Bredasdorp and surrounds. The project consisted of the construction of a new and wider surfaced road, upgrading of the stormwater system, upgrading of the historic towns of Elim and Baardskedersbosch, construction of a new bridge over Uilenkraals and the construction of two low water causeways. Elim has become known for the export of fynbos, and as an

emerging area in the production of wine. Both industries will benefit greatly from this upgraded road and improved infrastructure. With the project having now been completed, many residents and businesses in the area will look forward to the many benefits that will come their way.

La Paris Festival in The Valley La Paris Estate with its luscious gardens and manicured lawns is situated only 8km outside the picturesque town of Franschhoek. WELLNESS

Family Care for Orphaned Children In 1998, Acres of Love provided family care to children orphaned in South Africa, rescuing over 400 children. Maintaining entrepreneurial model of family care and the belief that the complex needs of orphans require individualized care has grown to 24 Forever Family Homes in Johannesburg, and in the last two years, four family homes in the Cape. Many children placed in Acres of Love homes have moderate to severe special needs including paralysis, hearing impairments, hydrocephalus, FAS, HIV, TB, Down Syndrome, Autism, and Cerebral Palsy. Situated in quiet neighborhoods in Somerset West and the Strand, these homes are warm and inviting with well-kept gardens and tidy exteriors. Inside, family photos line the walls, children’s toys are collected in baskets, and kitchens are well stocked with local fruit and veg that accompany every meal. Each child has their own bed, complete with warm linen and stuffed toys on their pillow. The most impactful thing in an Acres of Love home is the way the children are thriving.

Allergies Costing SA Economy over Half A Billion Per Year The cost of allergies to the South African economy is in excess of R606-million a year with healthcare expenditure and lost productivity being the biggest contributing factors. Experts warn that should the unmet needs and strategies to prevent the burgeoning “allergy epidemic” not be addressed, it could soon overwhelm the country’s already fragile healthcare system. Wilmi Hudsonberg, spokesperson of leading allergy pharmaceutical firm, Pharma Dynamics says: “This is largely due to a very low base of registered allergists in the country – of which there are only ten – and only four dedicated allergy clinics at Pietersburg Hospital (Limpopo), Tygerberg Hospital, Groote Schuur Hospital and the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town.” SA’s current allergy rates among children and young adults are as follows: 1.8 million children in SA have asthma, while the most recent International Study on Asthma and Allergy in Childhood, which examined eczema and allergic rhinitis in teenagers, found that 33.2% experienced problems with allergic rhinitis and 11.9% suffered from eczema. Food allergy data is scant, but a study conducted by the South African Food Sensitisation and Food Allergy has preliminary data showing a true food allergy rate at 2.5% among 1 – 3 year-olds.

Each home welcomes up to six children and is run by long-term, committed house parents who treat these children as their own. Given the very best medical, emotional, and educational care, the children know they are deeply loved. Most of the children have medical or other special needs, and the Acres team works with specialized therapists and doctors to ensure that each child is given the best chance to live a happy, healthy life.

Allergic rhinitis (the most commonly reported allergy) affects as many as 16 million people in South Africa. Some suffer from seasonal hayfever, but many suffer from perennial rhinitis, making it one of the most common chronic illnesses in the country. The prevalence of allergy in South Africa is higher than even commonly reported diseases like tuberculosis (TB) and HIV/AIDS. Other atopic conditions, such as eczema, allergic conjunctivitis and asthma, often co-occur, thereby increasing the burden of the disease.

Each home has the wrap-around support of the entire Acres team, which includes social workers, transport drivers, regional coordinators, medical experts, and a host of local volunteers acting as de-facto extended family.

Hudsonberg says among the unmet needs is the inadequate number of allergy specialists. Presently only the University of Cape Town offers training in the field of Allergology. Plenty more are needed to meet the population’s existing and future healthcare demands.

Free Mediation Week

South African patients with allergies currently spend over R480-million a year across allergy medications, and unit sales figures from last year to this year have more than doubled – pointing to a significant increase in allergic conditions in the country.

Over the last few decades the field of alternative dispute resolution has grown tremendously with the recognition that not all cases are well suited for the adversarial process and that there are multiple paths to justice is increasingly shared by attorneys, judges, and the public. The Family Mediators’ Association of the Cape (FAMAC) is offering a “free mediation week” as an initiative in celebration of the strides FAMAC has made in institutionalising mediation as one of several appropriate dispute resolution processes. During the week of 26-30 October 2015 a single family mediation session can be free for both people whether they qualify for legal aid or not. This initiative has been brought in to encourage more people to try mediation rather than head off straight to court. The professional mediators will mediate settlement agreements and parenting plans between the parties, either pre or post divorce. Mediation is usually much quicker, cheaper and less stressful than the legal route, and seven out of ten people are able to reach full agreement using family mediation. For more information or to make a booking contact the FAMAC Secretary, Charmaine Esterhuizen, on 021 801 6176 or email her at info@famac.co.za

FREE MEDIATION WEEK 26 - 30 OCTOBER 2015

ROOIBOS CAN HELP YOU SHED OVER A KILO A MONTH

One of the best-kept weight-loss secrets could already be in your pantry. Celebs swear by it, and research confirms that Rooibos tea is the ideal way to help you slim down this summer. By swapping just one cup of coffee for Rooibos tea every day, you could lose as much as a kilo every month. Most of us load our coffee with sugary syrups, honey, whipped cream or milk and sugar which can add anything from 35 to 250+ calories per cup. And if one considers that the average South African knocks back about four cups of coffee a day, drinking Rooibos instead could lead to a whopping 7 – 14kg shed in a year. Ernest du Toit, spokesperson for the SA Rooibos Council, says the indigenous tea offers dieters a healthy, enjoyable and sustainable way to lose weight. “Rooibos tea contains no fat or carbohydrates and its weight-loss properties further extends to inhibiting fat-storage hormones within the body. Rooibos’s unique Bioflavonoid, Aspalathin, helps to reduce stress hormones that trigger hunger and fat storage, typically associated with high blood pressure, heart disease, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes. In a nutshell, Rooibos tea can prevent the body from storing and even forming new fat cells. “Rooibos tea is also caffeine-free and naturally sweet so there’s no need to add extra sugar. Plus it comes in a variety of flavours like berry, cinnamon, mint and citrus. SoundWaves - The Pathway to Sound Health Imagine you could identify a dreaded condition – diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease etc – at the onset, before conventional diagnostics are able to detect it. Imagine you could do this without running expensive blood (or any other) tests and having to wait in suspense for the lab results. Imagine you could have a complete body scan, right down to your chromosomes, in one location: no discomfort, no one touching you, no one requiring any kind of sample from you. Imagine you could have your skin, teeth and eyes – everything – scanned at this same location. Imagine you could take pro-active control of your well-being and stop an impending illness in its tracks. Have you grown weary of running the medical gamut of pills and expensive scans; the discomfort and indignities of a mammogram, “Pap” smear, or prostate examination? Are you still suffering from symptoms that seem immune to your medication or other remedies?

This research trickled down to NASA, and finally landed up in the global Bioresonance Therapy arena. This means that the 3D NLS Bioplasm System can pinpoint how long you have had a specific condition, disease or tumour; and also how serious or critical it is. Examples of some conditions scanned and treated by Bioresonance are: Asthma; ADHD; Cardiovascular Disease; Depression; Detox of Heavy Metals; Eczema; Gynaecological Disorders; Headache/Migraine; Parasites/Viruses/Bacteria; Preand Postoperative Treatment; Rheumatism; Sports Injuries; Stress; Urological Disorders. However, there are countless others that can be identified and treated. Background

Welcome to the wonderful world of SoundWaves Bioresonance Therapy, headed by Charl de Villiers in Gordon’s Bay. What Is Bioresonance (Frequency) Therapy? Have you ever witnessed a sonar image of an unborn baby or used a cell phone? Do you know that sonar systems guide submarines underwater (the so-called “ping”)? Then you will understand how this particular form of therapy works! The basis of this totally natural treatment is simple: every object (human, animal, animate and inanimate) emits its very own unique frequency. If you have a virus or parasite in your body the machine reads that frequency, identifies and kills it. How does Bioresonance (Frequency) Therapy work? By wearing a special pair of headphones, frequencies (i.e. soundwaves) are conducted to your body via a 3D NLS Bioplasm System, using cutting-edge technology, to scan and treat any part of your body – top to toe. Best of all - there is no pain or discomfort; no embarrassing physical invasion of your body; no radiation; no chemicals; no human touch. The 3D NLS Bioplasm System allows you to take proactive and preventative control of your health – of your life. First of all, your body is scanned to detect viruses, parasites, heavy metals, chemical imbalances, tumours, glandular and other disorders. A schedule of treatment is then set up, depending on the outcomes of a scan.

Charl de Villiers, a true “Bolander”, born in Knysna and raised in Stellenbosch started out teaching, and became a School Principal at the age of 26. However, Charl developed an interest in the medical aspects of Education for the Disabled and became active within the South African League for Epileptics (SANEL). Furthermore, Charl was part of the team who, in the mid-1980’s, built and established the Noluthando School for Deaf in Kayelitsha, which is still fullyfunctional today. Having spent 10 years at the school – both before and after 1994 – Charl has even stared down the barrel of an AK47, aimed at him and his teaching staff during some very turbulent times! Charl’s career rekindled a longstanding passion for all things medical, leading him towards research of the multi-faceted medical aspects of Epilepsy, Deafness, Mental Retardation and Genetics, including Fingerprints. The intriguing, revolutionary field of Soundwave (Bioresonance) Therapy opened up for Charl about 15 years ago, while still active in Education. With great enthusiasm he treated friends and family for free, with his very first machine - purely as a fascinating hobby. Having retired in 2010, the “hobby” became a full-blown passion, especially since Charl and his wife, Annemarie, relocated from Pretoria to Gordon’s Bay in 2012. They both believe in helping people and this “alternative” (in fact, “natural”) therapy enables them to do just that. Experience

Bioresonance Therapy can even run a blood or bone marrow test; read the condition of your eyes, ears, teeth, nails, skin - in fact: thousands of conditions and diseases can be traced and treated. An added bonus is that this particular system offers you the benefit of having a “mammogram”, “pap” smear, or prostate check-up, without any person or instrument touching you! It is totally non-invasive, non-chemical, painless and without any discomfort. All you have to do is sit back and relax. There is yet another unique benefit to your personal healthcare! The Russian Space Program developed a system predicting the physical condition of their astronauts while in space, 3 to 5 years ahead.

Charl de Villiers has 27 years’ experience in various types of severe disability, i.e. Mental Retardation, Epilepsy, Deaf Education, and Genetics; 15 years’ experience in Bioresonance Therapy and Bio-scanning, with a TOD. SpO. SpD at the University of Pretoria and Potchefstroom. Charl is also an Accredited Member of SARTA (The South African Resonance Therapy Association) and The Cancer Clinic of New Zeeland. He also offers group demonstrations from time to time – free of charge. Charl and Annemarie de Villiers want people to know that there truly is an alternative way of caring for your health! Fight Against Hunger on World Food Day World Food Day was celebrated globally during the month of October and seeks to highlight public awareness of the world food shortage and to strengthen solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty. On 16 October 2015, World Food Day, people from around the world come together to declare their commitment to eradicate hunger. Locally, SASKO donated a total of 10,000 loaves of nutritious Low GI bread, and 6,000kg of SASKO Cake Flour to FoodBank SA to assist with its drive for food donations this year. FoodBank SA will donate food items to non–profit community based organisations across the country. These organisations include early childhood development facilities, homeless shelters, soup kitchens and schools, which will in turn serve over 110,000 people during this time. Le-Anne Engelbrecht, marketing manager of SASKO, explains: “11 million South Africans are currently food insecure which means they do not know where their next meal will come from. We applaud the work being done by FoodBank SA, not only on World Food Day, but throughout the year as they aim for a country without hunger.”

“Through Project Khulisa, we are positioning the Western Cape as a leading food and wine destination. Establishments such as the Test Kitchen will be a key part of that strategy,” says Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities. Reviews for the Test Kitchen on Tripadvisor were full of praise for the city restaurant.

STELLENBOSCH - AMOIT ESTATE - FROM R1,095,000

Acclaimed national mall developers Abacus Asset Management are hitting all the right notes with their latest venture – a 16,000m² office and convenience shopping centre on the corner of the busy R44 and De Beers Avenue in Somerset West. Set alongside a rehabilitated water body with views of the mountains and the ocean, The Sanctuary combines AAA-grade office space with South Africa’s leading convenience shopping brands, a cutting edge gym and a niche eateries to suit every taste. The R400-million, three-storey Stauch Voster (Cape Town) designed building will offer 8,000m² of retail space on the ground floor and a further 8,000m² of office space and a gym on floors one and two. On track to open in October 2016, the three-storey centre has already secured anchor tenants Woolworths Food, Pick n Pay and Virgin Active. Other firsts being introduced by the centre include South Africa’s first Burger King drive-through restaurant in the Helderberg region, which opens this December, as well as popular Gauteng steakhouse franchise, Turn ‘n Tender, which opens with the centre next year.

Abacus Asset Management leasing director Eradus van Antwerpen said the centre would primarily serve Somerset West, Strand and Gordon’s Bay residents. It was the first restaurant hub for Somerset West, he said, adding that the centre would boast extended trading hours and a safe trading environment along a high traffic node. Abacus Asset Management managing director Gavin Blows said the development was in response to the high demand for premium office space in area and the growth in the residential market. Luxury 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment in Historic Centre. Open plan kitchen, dining and lounge with street facing balcony. Modern finishes. All furniture and appliances included. Includes one basement parking. Perfect lock up an go!

“The centre will provide a new dining destination for the residents of the Somerset West and Strand areas, as it will consist of at least eight eateries,” said Blows. “The popular Turn ‘n Tender steakhouse franchise has chosen The Sanctuary as their first offering in the Western Cape, which supports our research of an undersupplied dining demand in the Somerset West and Strand areas.” Designed to be sensitive to the water body which it surrounds, the centre will also allow for restaurants to trade internally or externally, depending on the weather. The water body, which serves as a storm water retention facility, is being rehabilitated, with the developers implementing a water and landscaping maintenance programme to ensure the natural environment is preserved.

Luxuriously designed 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment in the heart of Stellenbosch. Open-plan design offers lounge area, dining area and extra area for open 3 2 office or for entertaining guests. Living room and main bedroom each with balcony and views towards Jonkershoek valley. Modern, neutral palate has been used throughout. Features include under floor heating, air-con and Bose sound system. 2 basement parking bays. Building has a built-in generator. Web ref #103313395

STELLENBOSCH - AAN DE WEBER - R1,550,000

Blows said that prior to Abacus purchasing the property, the water body had been polluted from various sources in the area, which had led to the degradation of bird and plant life around the pond. “Since ground-breaking, over 5,000m3 of polluted soil has been removed, the banks the pond have been shaped and, in due course, vegetation will be planted to encourage the return and growth of the bird life in the area,” he said. “A bird and plant education route is planned, and a specialist company has been appointed to monitor the quality of the water once the centre is operational.” The centre would also feature high-speed connectivity. “As with all new Abacus developments, the shopping centre will be fully networked with optic fibre. Vodacom will provide voice and data services to all retail and office tenants with speeds far in excess of what is currently available,” added Blows.

North facing, 363 m² erf with beautiful views in popular security Estate close to Techno Park. Approved building plans included. Potential rental income from R18 000 pm. Don’t miss out on this opportunity!

Western Cape Manufacturing Indaba 2015 Taking place on 6 November 2015 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, the Western Cape Manufacturing Indaba will bring together the province’s manufacturers to workshop and network with government’s policy makers and the province’s leadership to unlock the growth opportunities of the sector. The Manufacturing Indaba will be hosting a programme focused towards issue impacting manufacturers in the Province and create a platform to raise awareness in the automotive, chemical, tooling and general manufacturing sectors and address issues to enhance sustainability in manufacturing industries. Topics to be discussed include: Advanced manufacturing design and innovation, investment promotion and export opportunities in manufacturing, energy solutions and alternative power for manufacturing, localisation for supply chain development and local production, spatial development opportunities, access to finance, and manufacturing opportunities in Africa. Manufacturing is the second biggest sector in the Western Cape after the financial services sector and contributed 15% to the South African manufacturing sector output of R300 billion in 2012. The manufacturing sector in the Western Cape attracts large amounts of inward investment, and enjoys substantial state assistance as an employment-creating industry. Manufactured products include heavy-duty industrial equipment, vehicle parts and electrical equipment. Exporters in this sector have experience in supplying large quantities to buyers from developed and developing countries. Brought to you by the Manufacturing Indaba in conjunction with the Department of Trade & Industry (dti) and the Manufacturing Circle, the programme has input from collaborators such as Wesgro, NCPC-SA, the Western Cape Tooling Initiative and Green Cape, and will address the challenges that are particular to manufacturing businesses based in the Western Cape. For more information visit www.manufacturingindaba.co.za

Is a Non-Compete Between an Employer and an Employee enforceable? When an Employee-Employer-relationship is terminated, albeit due to the Employee resigning or as a result of dismissal, or the like, the inevitable question arises: “Are non-compete agreements enforceable?” The answer is yes, but with certain qualifications. Under certain circumstances a Court may not always be amenable to enforce a non-compete agreement. Although our Courts generally enforce agreements when necessary to protect a contracting parties’ interests, such protection are afforded whilst taking into consideration the surrounding circumstances and the effect enforcing or exempting a party from a non-compete clause in an Employment agreement would have on both parties.

It is therefore clear that all laws and therefore also the common law principals, which underlies the law of Contract, applicable when any contractual aspect arises, are therefore subject to our Constitution and to the premise that every person has the fundamental right to choose and practice any occupation. An agreement “not to compete” generally is a promise that the employee will not engage in business competitive with that of the employer during and for a certain time period following termination of employment and may be defined to be limited for a specific area. Such undertakings are often accompanied by a promise “not to solicit” the employer’s customers (“non-solicitation”) and “not to disclose” the employer’s confidential business information (“non-disclosure”).

The underlying consideration shall always be that every person has the fundamental right of freedom, freedom to choose their trade, occupation, profession and freedom to practice such trade, occupation or profession. Of course such freedoms as is defined and stipulated in our Constitution may be regulated and limited by the law. Where it is necessary to protect another’s rights or where no real protectable interests are at stake, where the restrictions are unreasonable, or where the employer has undermined its ability to enforce the rights, by for example engaging in “selective enforcement” of such agreements, a Court may very well not enforce the non-compete Agreement. Each person’s fundamental rights to freedom of trade, occupation and profession are recognized in our Constitution, with the Supremacy of the Constitution defined as follows: “This Constitution is the supreme law of the Republic; law or conduct inconsistent with it is invalid, and the obligations imposed by it must be fulfilled. Chapter 2 deals with the BILL OF RIGHTS and in its application states that: “The Bill of Rights applies to all law, and binds the legislature, the executive, the judiciary and all organs of state. A provision of the Bill of Rights binds a natural or a juristic person if, and to the extent that, it is applicable, taking into account the nature of the right and the nature of any duty imposed by the right. When applying a provision of the Bill of Rights to a natural or juristic person a court, in order to give effect to a right in the Bill, must apply, or if necessary develop, the common law to the extent that legislation does not give effect to that right; and may develop rules of the common law to limit the right.”

Because a non-compete is a “restrictive pledge,” i.e., a promise by an employee not to engage in certain behavior that is contrary to the employer’s interests, for it to be enforceable, a non-compete must be (i) necessary to protect certain employer interests, (ii) reasonable in time and scope, (iii) legal and consistent with public interest and (iv) supported by consideration. The Courts distinguish two key protectable employer interests: an employer’s relationship with customers, clients and vendors (also called “good will”) and confidential business information, such as for instance trade secrets. Goodwill encompasses a variety of intangibles, including market position and reputation. Confidential business information encompasses commercially valuable information or necessary business specific information, not generally known outside of the company, which the company has taken reasonable measures to protect. Only in the event that good will or confidential business information requires protection can an Employer prevent an Employee from competing with the Employer, as was agreed in the non-compete agreement. In other words non-competes can be used to prevent unfair competition (involving misappropriation of good will or confidential business information) but cannot be used to prevent ordinary, everyday, competition. All persons are allowed and indeed entitled to compete with one another, as they have the right of freedom to choose and practice any trade, occupation or profession. An Employer should therefore carefully consider whether it is necessary to restrict an employee’s right to freedom of trade, occupation or profession by entering into a non-compete agreement and an Employee should likewise consider whether such restrictions are necessary, under the circumstances and what such restrictions should contain to be reasonable in time and scope, legal and consistent with public interest and if supported by consideration. As such it is advisable to contact a legal Practitioner to prepare a non-compete that will be legally enforceable.

Top Honours at 2015 South African Magic Championships In one fell swoop, two of Cape Town’s top magicians, Stuart Lightbody and Olwethu Dyantyi took top honours at the 2015 South African Magic Championships, held at GrandWest recently. Going wand to wand against dozens of their nationwide competitors, Lightbody (31) and Dyantyi (21) impressed judges and delegates alike with their captivating acts, claiming first place in the Close-up Magic and Stage Magic contests respectively. Dyantyi also clinched the coveted Grand Prix title, a prize awarded to the magical competitor who scores 85% and above for their acts. Hosted by the College of Magic, the Mother City’s only magical arts organisation, the 2015 South African Magic Championships is a triennial event held to select the best magician nationwide. This year’s activities saw GrandWest transformed into the ultimate magic convention venue with series of exhilarating contests, demonstrations, panel discussions, gala magic shows and more. This 2015 victory marks the second time Lightbody, a Claremont resident, has claimed the SA Magic Champion title since 2005. With several international accolades, including Weekly Best of Fest Award at the Adelaide Fringe Festival and the Creative Award at the Prague Fringe Festival beneath his wand too, the psychological illusionist is elated with his latest triumph: Likewise, rising magical star Dyantyi has been floating on air since his double win. Having just returned from performing at a festival in Beijing, snagging the 2015 Stage Magic Champion and Grand Prix titles are a dream come true for the township youth.

Both Lightbody and Dyantyi are graduates of the College of Magic, the only organisation of its kind in the world, which celebrates 35 years of teaching magic and its allied arts to children and adults in 2015.

Four Stellenbosch Wine Icons Go Back to their Pinotage Roots Four of South Africa’s iconic Pinotage producers, all part of the Stellenbosch Wine Routes, have joined forces to create the Pinotage Root of South Africa, the first demarcated wine experience centred round the grape variety with which the South African wine industry has become synonymous. The four wine farms are part of the lexicon of premier South African wines, with the Pinotage Root comprising Simonsig Estate, Kanonkop, Beyerskloof and L’Avenir, all recognised as the crème de la crème of Pinotage producers. Not only have these wineries been top performers in the history of the Top 10 Pinotage Competition, but their role in promoting the country’s Pinotage pedigree has been at the forefront of South Africa’s wine narrative over the past few years. According to Annareth Bolton, CEO of the Stellenbosch Wine Routes, the Pinotage Root was formed to provide a unique experience for wine lovers wishing to focus on wines made from the country’s best-known indigenous grape variety. The relative close proximity of the L’Avenir, Kanonkop, Simonsig and Beyerskloof allows the visitor easy access to the best Pinotage wines in South Africa within a day-trip. Each farm will be offering visitors a selection of five Pinotage wines from their cellars, with various culinary offerings varying from snacks to gourmet restaurant meals laid on. Photo: Beyers Truter

Bolton says that the initiative was taken by the wineries themselves to set-up the Pinotage Root, and underscores the dynamic forward thinking that has become a feature of the corps of members belonging to the Stellenbosch Wine Routes.

Western Cape Beaches

Received International Blue Flag Status

Lufthansa Flights Increased! Now Flying Daily to Cape Town

As a major achievement by municipalities in the Western Cape, 49 beaches, marinas and boats received the international Blue Flag Status. In total 84 Blue Flags were given to South Africa of which more than half were in the Western Cape. The commendable achievements of the stakeholders responsible for the success of these beaches were formally acknowledged with the presentation of awards at the launch event for the 2015/16 Blue Flag Season at Grotto Beach in Hermanus recently. The Blue Flag is an international award given to beaches that meets strict criteria of excellence in the areas of safety, amenities, cleanliness and environmental standards. Congratulations to all of the winners, especially Grotto Beach in Hermanus who won the Gold Status this year. Western Cape beaches that received Silver Status are Clifton’s 4th Beach, Bikini Beach in Gordonsbay, Kleinmond, Hawston and Lappiesbaai (Stilbaai). Bronze Status were given to Silwerstroomstrand, Camps Bay, Llandudno, Muizenberg, Mnandi, Witsand, Santos (Mossel Bay), Hartenbos, Robberg 5 and Keurboomstrand. The Blue Flag Status is important for promoting tourism, boosting the economic growth and contributing to permanent job creation in the province. However, one of the most importantly attributes is the creating of proud citizens and an overall awareness of the importance of the environmental and the preservation thereof. City Hires Lifeguards to Ensure Safety of Beach Users

Lufthansa is increasing its service between Cape Town and Munich from five weekly non-stop flights to a daily schedule. The seasonal service, valid from 25 October 2015 until 27 March 2016, links the Bavarian capital to the mother city and is operated using the A340-600. For local business and leisure travelers this means tapping into a growing network of European and intercontinental flights from Lufthansa’s Bavarian Hub. Lufthansa’s intercontinental fleet overhaul, equating to a daily 1 million invested in both onboard and ground products is in its final stretch and customers are now being offered the new Premium Economy Class which compliments the retrofitted First and Business Class cabins. The new Premium Economy Class seats offer up to 50 percent more room than Economy Class and positions Lufthansa as a leader in offering premium service in all four classes of service. “Launched just 18 months ago, Lufthansa’s newest cabin of service has already become a benchmark in quality and service for passengers interested in upgrading their travel experience,” notes Andre Schulz, Lufthansa’s General Manager for South Africa.

The City of Cape Town’s Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department is employing permanent and seasonal lifeguards in order to improve beach safety over the holiday season. During the spring school holiday 12 permanent lifeguards and over 100 seasonal lifeguards, 100 beach monitors were deployed. The team of lifeguards and beach monitors will be on duty at the various beaches between 08:00 and 16:30 over weekends until the peak season. An essential requirement for appointment as a beach lifeguard is the possession of a valid Lifeguard Award, as well as experience in Surf Lifesaving. The 100 beach monitors are in addition to the many law enforcement personnel who vigilantly patrol the City’s beaches and assist lifeguards in preventing drowning incidents. The beach monitors will be responsible for helping to prevent irresponsible and dangerous behaviour along the coastline. These monitors will patrol the areas of coastline not covered by lifeguard services in order to prevent people from swimming in areas where there are no lifeguards present. The presence of these beach monitors is crucial if the City is to effectively prevent drowning incidents. The following hotspot beaches will be covered by lifeguards on weekends: Clifton, Camps Bay, Fish Hoek, Muizenberg, Kogel Bay, Strand, Macassar, Monwabisi, Mnandi, Strandfontein and Blue Waters. During the peak summer season, this service will be boosted by accredited members of lifesaving clubs and the National Sea Rescue Institute.

He further adds that Lufthansa’s new cabin service offers a seat pitch which is up to three centimetres wider depending on the type of aircraft. The separate wide armrest for each seat and the centre console between the seats ensure extra privacy and thus a total of about 10 centimetres more space to the side. The seat back can be tilted further and the seat spacing is much more generous at 97cm. The adjustable headrest can be folded at the sides to give comfort and support. Premium Economy also offers leg support and foot rests to provide which differ slightly in design depending on the row configuration. With two pieces of luggage up to 23 kgs, each passenger has twice as much free baggage allowance as standard Economy Class allowance. Lufthansa’s First Class passengers flying from South Africa already enjoy the highest quality of service and luxury available on board, the superb comfort of the award-winning First Class cabin with its ergonomically contoured seat that converts into a fully flat, two-metre long bed has won a 5-star award from Skytrax, the travel industry’s independent quality institution. For the fifth year running, Edelweiss, Switzerland’s leading leisure carrier and a subsidiary Lufthansa Group carrier Swiss, will connect Cape Town with Zurich non-stop twice a week during South Africa’s high season operating flights from October 2015 until mid May 2016. Edelweiss has also recently completed a major refurbishing programme of their cabin now offering three classes, namely the flat bed Business Class, the Economy Max and the normal Economy Class. Reflecting the importance of South Africa to Lufthansa network, the airline is also introducing the new generation Boeing B747-8 to its Johannesburg route. For the first time in aviation history, the stretched Jumbo Jet passenger version also known as the “Queen of the skies” touched African soil on 25 October this year.

Cape West Coast tourism Sector Boosted by New Routes Recent numbers compiled by Wesgro Research reveal that the Cape West Coast has experienced a constant increase in tourist numbers to the region. Lately, the allure of the region has been boosted by the development of new routes with the likes of Langebaan attracting over 30,000 visitors to its respective attractions during December 2014, largely owed to the growing popularity of these routes. The 2014 Cape West Coast visitor trends reflected a growing share in respondents who indicated overnight stays. The summer season saw visitors to the region staying on average one (24.2%) and two (41.0%) nights.

During the same period visitors spent on average R500-R1000 on accommodation and spent the same amount daily on various other purchases. The growing popularity in the heritage-inspired Groenekloof Route and the BlueBenguela Leisure Route is underlined by the activities indicated by visitors during the 2014/15 summer season; with scenic drives (30.8%), gourmet restaurants (15.1%), outdoor activities (13.6%), culture/heritage (11.4%) and fishing (4.0%) ranking as the top five activities enjoyed in the Cape West Coast. The role played by West Coast Way, a private initiative procured by Sanparks

to promote the West Coast Bio-diversity Corridor from Blaauwberg Nature Reserve to the West Coast National Park cannot be understated. With many attractions on the West Coast realising increased visitor numbers since their inception. Wesgro also continues to play a significant role in driving up the region’s visitor numbers actively promoting this region with campaigns like the Scoot West Coast campaign and storytelling evenings amongst others. Along with event organisers, West Coast Tourism keeps the flow of visitors to the region constant, coordinating a host of events scheduled throughout the year.

Events include the likes of the Darling Music Experience, Paternoster Jazz on the Rocks, Goedverwacht Snoek en Patatfees and the Darling Rocking the Daisies just to name a few.

Melody Wales Studio Produces Popular Lead-Glass Items The Melody Wales Studio produces heirloom quality lead-glass lamps and assorted lead-glass items, including windows and doors. Each lamp sold is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity guaranteeing that the lamp is a hand-made, one-off product crafted personally by Melody Wales. Melody’s lamps have been sold to a select clientele worldwide, from London to Stockholm; from Italy to Australia. Other popular lead-glass items that Melody produces are jewellery boxes, angels and dragons and beautiful sun catchers - destined to become heirlooms. Among her prized products are lead-glass terrariums, which are much sought after – in particular from clients in the Netherlands. She also does repairs. Until recently the Melody Wales Studio traded from premises at the Watershed, situated at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront. One of the conditions of the lease forced Melody to personally man her premises. She soon realised that she was devoting too much energy as a shopkeeper, and not enough time pursuing her passion of working with glass! However, she saw out her lease period until finally she was once again a free agent. She now operates from her workshop in Blouberg where she is crafting a range of doors which will feature in Cape Town’s largest decorating exhibition in April/May 2016. The Studio currently does not have a retail outlet.

Love Cape Town Neighbourhood Series

To Beer or Not To Beer

Cape Town Tourism (CTT) is thrilled to announce the launch of the Love Cape Town Neighbourhood Series, a collection of videos intimately revealing three of the city’s suburbs.

Calling all beer lovers! South Africa’s largest and most popular beer festival, the Cape Town Festival of Beer is back to rock the Mother City at Hamilton’s Rugby club in Greenpoint from 27 - 29 November 2015.

The videos are a direct response to the “Travel like a Local” trend; visitors want to experience the places they travel in ways that expose them to the quirky and interesting features enjoyed by locals.

With over 200 beers from 60 local and international brewers, this festival is a must-attend event for everyone. Whether you’re a beer enthusiast, connoisseur or just keen on sharing a few cold ones with your mates this festival is for you!

Showcasing local hidden gems around the city, the areas highlighted in these videos (so far) are vibrant Woodstock with its eclectic blend of old and ultra-modern Cape Town, the cosmopolitan heart of the Cape Town Central Business District CBD and the beautiful coastal suburb with the feel of a fishing village, Kalk Bay – Cape Town destinations which will add value to any trip.

“This year we are coming back bigger and better! We’re even extending our offering to a range of cider manufacturers due to popular demand,” says Martin Tucker owner of the Cape Town Festival of Beer.

Celebrity chef Karen Dudley, local comedian/presenter Siv Ngesi and homegrown musician Arno Carstens take you on a guided visual tour of their ‘hoods. According to Cape Town Tourism CEO Enver Duminy, CTT is responding to this trend by releasing online multiple Neighbourhood Guides to areas around the Mother City.

Look forward to delicious food stands, live entertainment, home brewing demonstrations and beer tours to name a few of the exciting activities surrounding the event. Kiddies play areas will also be available providing fun for the whole family. Crowd favourites, CBC, Devil’s Peak, Brew Dog and Darling Brew are just a few brewers that will be showcasing at the event.

“We understand that we’re appealing to the main target audience, but also that with this new trend we can actively spread the positive affect of tourism,” he says. “Being exposed directly to travellers allows local businesses, especially the smaller ones, to be showcased on a global platform”, Enver continues, “This will also allow for a direct injection of funds into areas beyond the traditional tourist routes or sites. This will ultimately lead to increased job creation and wider spread of the tourist rand.” “We encourage all our visitors to download the Official Guide to Cape Town app and visit our website capetown.travel for a host of info on the city, plus have a look at our latest youtube.com/user/CapeTownTourism videos and blogs www.capetown.travel/blog showcasing Cape Town.”
