World's Top Maths Achiever is Cape Town's very own!

Dario Trinchero, a 17-year old student at Somerset College, has been placed first in the country for Chemistry and first in the world for Mathematics in the International Cambridge AS Examinations. Dario obtained 100% for Mathematics!

CapeTalk Breakfast Host Kieno Kammies spoke with the top maths learner in the world, 17-year-old Dario Trinchero at Somerset College.

Trinchero says he did not expect such stellar results, and does not take all the credit for his success.

“I've always been passionate about maths, and have had passionate teachers.

All of that is the catalyst for success. I've always done well because I've been surrounded by people that encouraged me,” says Dario Trinchero, Somerset College matric learner.

Dario says that he hopes to study both theoretical physics and computer science when he completes high school. Dario obtained 100% for Mathematics and scored over 90% in four other subjects, namely Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science and Afrikaans.

The Western Cape’s tourism sector experienced one of its best seasons yet as international and domestic arrivals continued to rise.

Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities, officially released the summer season visitor numbers for the province during a press conference at Cape Town International Airport, while Deon Cloete, General Manager at the Airport briefed the media on airport movements.

Minister Winde tabled the tourism figures for the period between November 2015 and March 2016 and said that the tourism sector has experienced another phenomenal year. According to Minister Winde the V&A Waterfront welcomed 11.8 million visitors between November last year and March 2016.

Western Cape Tourism Numbers On The Rise (Continue from page 1) This is up 5.8% from the same period in the previous year. Kirstenbosch also reported a 1.3% increase over the period under review, logging 466 646 visitors.

Just under 200 000 people visited Robben Island, the World Heritage Site with an 24% increase in visitor numbers compared with the previous year.

Minister Winde said an analysis on air arrivals into Cape Town, conducted by Wesgro, illustrated the importance of air access.

There has been an impressive 60% increase in Origin and Destination (O&D) passengers coming through Qatar for the time period, from 34 951 to 55 772 passengers. This can be attributed to the partnership with Qatar Airways. There has also been an increase of 53% in O&D passengers from Turkey from 36 348 to 55 714. This growth is linked to the landing of Turkish Airlines flights into Cape Town.

“The European markets continue to make up a significant portion of tourist arrivals into Cape Town, accounting for about 45% of arrivals. We observed increases from Germany, the Netherlands and France during the period under review,” says Minister Winde.

Cloete said overall passenger numbers continued to show robust growth i.e. just over 10% for the financial year. On the International front arriving passengers grew by 7%, while the Domestic arriving passengers grew by 10% for the same period.

Regional growth also showed solid performing, growing by 20%.

“On an average day the airport processes close to 26 000 passengers, handles approximately 11 000 number of bags and uplifts nearly 1.2 million litres of aviation fuel.”

“Over time, the airport has developed the capabilities to facilitate large numbers of passengers and visitors to the airport as result of major events. This includes facilitating events such as the Cycle tour, Two Oceans and Jazz Festival. Minister Winde said they anticipate the following key trends for the period between April 2016 and August 2016: USA passenger bookings are up 23%, from 10 844 to 13 301 passengers. In Europe, the United Kingdom, Germany and Netherlands passenger numbers on bookings are up 18%, 19% and 44% respectively over the period to come and in China, passenger numbers on bookings are up 52%;

Minister Winde said these trends were excellent news for the Western Cape, which is working with industry to counter seasonality.

Tourism is the fastest-growing sector, employing 204 000 residents in formal jobs and through Project Khulisa a further 100 000 jobs can be added to the tourism sector.

Some of the Project Khulisa initiatives set to kick off this year is the development of a data and real-time intelligence dashboard to ensure the province can respond to global trends; the implementation of a Madiba Legacy Route that will include the Madiba statue in the City and the provision of signage along the route; the launch of an online events portal that aggregates data for an all-year events calendar and lastly more landing direct flights to Cape Town.

Minister Winde issued a challenge to the tourism sector to keep the momentum going and keep up the good work to ensure that the next season is the best yet.

V&A Waterfront Goes Head-To-Head With European Destinations Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront took pride of place as the only South African, and only one of three nominated destinations in the world, at the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) ‘Tourism for Tomorrow’ Destination Awards held at the 16th WTTC Global Summit in Dallas, Texas.

With Parkstad Limburg in the Netherlands emerging the frontrunner, David Green, CEO of the V&A Waterfront said this was nonetheless a defining moment for the business.

“The fact that we were nominated by an organisation the stature of the WTTC, alongside destinations such as Parkstad Limburg and Swiss Parks Network in Switzerland is testament to the fact that our offering is comparable with the best in the world.” Sixty two countries across all continents submitted applications for this year’s awards.

“While the V&A Waterfront is fortunate to boast many attractions, that alone is not enough to distinguish ourselves as an international tourist destination. It requires a holistic, sustainable vision for development, protection of historical assets and an inclusive approach that is as welcoming of locals as it is of visitors.”

“As the custodians of one of the world’s best waterfronts, we strive to offer locals and visitors alike a world-class destination that nevertheless remains true to its historic roots.” The V&A Waterfront was also the winner of the highly contested international award for Best Destination for Responsible Tourism at the World Travel Market in London in 2015.

The Award was granted in recognition of the Waterfront’s commitment and leadership in not only preserving the heritage of the property, but also its forward thinking in terms of sustainable development.

SANBI-Kirstenbosch’s 41st annual entry to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show (CFS) has taken a new direction this year, with the Harold Porter National Botanical Garden – A Gateway to the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve World Heritage Site taking centre stage in the exhibit. The model showing this year’s theme was unveiled at Kirstenbosch.

Swisatec, an architectural and project management firm based in Cape Town, South Africa, is set to build the first multibillion Green Village in Cape Town. The Blue Rock Village will be the first Green Village not only in South Africa, but in Africa. The multibillion Green Village is an upgrade of the well-known Blue Rock Resort, which boasts a magnificent view of the Blue Rock Lake, the only lake in Cape Town with crystal clear waters, with a depth of 60 meters and a water temperature of 27°C, ideal for water skiing and scuba diving.

The Village is situated in the heart of award winning wine farms of Somerset West, a stone throw away from Sir Lowry’s Pass, approximately 3-6 kilometres away from the Gordon’s Bay and Strand beaches. The Village is accessible through N2 highway, Cape Town International Airport is only 15 minutes away by car and Cape Town CBD a mere 30 minutes.

The Harold Porter National Botanical Garden in Betty’s Bay was bequeathed to the National Botanical Gardens, now SANBI, in 1958. Uniquely located within the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, and situated in the centre of the coastal fynbos where the flora is at its richest, this beautiful garden encompasses mountain slopes with wind-clipped heathlands, deep gorges with relict forests, flats and marshes with restios, sedges and bulbs, as well as dunes adjacent to the beach with specialised salt-adapted plants.

The Garden is renowned for its waterfalls and amber pools. It showcases more than 700 species of indigenous South African plants and over 100 species of birds.

The main fynbos families (proteas, ericas and restios) are present as well as other important families such as irises, daisies and orchids. The Garden boasts red disa (Disa uniflora) in its natural habitat as well as South Africa’s national flower, the king protea (Protea cynaroides) and the Prince of Wales heath (Erica perspicua).

Ten hectares are immaculately cultivated with wheelchair-friendly paths winding between banks of fynbos plants, wetland and dune displays and cool African montane forests.

Another 190 hectares have been left undisturbed and offer several kilometres of attractive mountainside and riverine nature trails taking between one and four hours to walk. Trails in the Garden include a mountain slope Fynbos trail, the longer zig-zag border trail takes you into the core of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, and a trail (requiring a permit) along a stream up to the waterfall in Leopard’s Gorge.

Just an hour out of Cape Town at the southern tip of Africa, lies an area of such natural beauty and floral diversity as to be recognized as perhaps the world’s greatest biodiversity hot-spot.

The Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve falls within the Boland Mountain Complex – one of eight sites across the Western and Eastern Cape that comprise the Cape Floristic Region Protected Areas World Heritage Site. The heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom is in the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve.

With more than 150 000 people visiting the CFS, the success of the stand depends on the enthusiastic team of volunteers who join the designers and SANBI representatives in ensuring that their display is perfect in every way.

The judges said that the ‘Shark Spotters’ solution to safe beaches removes the fear factor from enjoying Cape Town’s beaches, while working to protect sharks, particularly the Great White Shark – a globally threatened species.

Spotters positioned on the mountainsides surrounding swimming beaches look out for sharks near the shore and use a series of flags as a warning system. Sarah Waries, Project Manager of Shark Spotters, said they were delighted to win this award and receive this recognition for their work towards sustainable shark bite mitigation in Cape Town.

"Working together with the City of Cape Town, we have created a holistic, socially and environmentally responsible initiative that protects beach tourism, the local economy and the environment from the negative repercussions of shark bite incidents," said Waries. The Shark Spotters Information Centre at Muizenberg Surfer’s Corner is open to the public from 08:00 to 18:00, seven days a week.

The blustering gale-force wind on 7 April 2016 did little to dampen the joyful spirits of young Jack Kastner and his party when they met with Overstrand Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie to receive an allocation to the Butterfly Centre in Stanford, where he is a learner at the special needs educational facility.

The Butterfly Centre is one of a number of recipients to benefit from the proceeds raised during the Seartec sponsored Overstrand Golf Day that was held at the Arabella Wine Estate and Country Club in November 2015.

The Butterfly Foundation is a charity organisation established in 2013 by Jami Yeats-Kastner in honour of her then 18-month son, Sam, who tragically passed away in February that year. YeatsKastner’s motivation was borne from the need to ensure her son’s life, albeit brief, continued to have meaning, whilst in turn leaving an everlasting impact on the world.

She, and husband Peter, have fortunately been blessed with two more boys. However, Jack aged 8, has special needs. For a while the delightful lad attended a mainstream school, but it soon became evident that a different learning vehicle was needed that would cater specifically to the scholastic needs of kids with learning impairments like Jack’s.

After realising that there were very few of these facilities in the Overstrand. Jami initiated a fundraising campaign that subsequently culminated in the Butterfly Centre being born on 20 July 2015.

On addressing the group, the Mayor said that she was pleased that Alissa Coetzee, a Miss Teen Commonwealth SA finalist, had elected to bring the efforts of the Butterfly Centre to her attention.

Trees For Africa At Vergelegen

Probio is proud to announce its recognition by the annual Eco-Logic Awards for its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions using the Probio Bokashi Composting System. Probio received the Certificate of Merit in The Climate Change Award category on 21 April 2016 at a gala event held at The Table Bay Hotel in Cape Town.

In diverting food waste from landfills, Probio collaborated with local households, businesses and communities to reduce their carbon footprint by turning waste into a valuable resource, using the Probio Bokashi Composting System.

The result is a notable reduction of over 46,000 tons of waste from landfills and over 10,000 tons of methane from the atmosphere since 2012.

The famous “big five” at Vergelegen are five enormous camphor trees (Cinnamomum Camphora) in front of the gracious homestead. Planted by former Cape governor and Vergelegen owner Willem Adriaan van der Stel between 1700 and 1706, they were proclaimed national monuments in 1942.

Seedlings from these five gigantic specimens have been planted to form a shady camphor forest near the homestead, where guests enjoy the estate’s famous picnics in summer.

Vergelegen is also the home of an Outeniqua yellowwood, estimated to be 150-400 years old. A hollow old English oak, about 300 years old, is believed to be the oldest living oak in Africa. The estate boasts a total of about 15 oak varieties, and launched an oak arboretum in 2012.

This acorn survived the sea trip from the UK to the Cape in the 1920s and duly grew into a giant oak. When King George VI and his family paid an informal visit to Vergelegen in 1947, they were delighted to hear the story about the tree with royal connections. They took some acorns back to England and had them planted in Windsor Great Park.

Vergelegen also boasts an ancient specimen of white mulberry (Morus Alba) that is the only surviving relic of van der Stel’s attempt to start a silk industry at the Cape. This white mulberry has renewed itself over and over again as the old trunk has grown and produced branches that flop over and take root.

The estate also has numerous camellia trees that comprise South Africa’s first and only International Camellia Garden of Excellence – one of only 39 such gardens in the world, and the only one in Africa. The camellia gardens at Vergelegen include approximately 550 cultivars, many of them decades old.

To ensure that Vergelegen’s magnificent trees remain in top-top condition, one of South Africa’s premier tree health management specialists, Dr Jolanda Roux (Professor at the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute at the University of Pretoria) makes an annual visit to check on these venerable specimens.

PROTECTOR OF THE MARINE BIG FIVE AND MORE! There is a small fishing village in the Western Cape, Gansbaai. It is known internationally as a hot spot for the great white shark with eighty thousand tourists that visit there just to shark cage dive.

Dyer Island is the hub of the area, a protected habitat of the endangered African penguin and also home to 60% of the Cape Cormorant population.

Across the famous Shark Alley is Geyser Rock, home of almost 60 000 Cape fur seals, favourite food of the great white shark.

Both businesses are Fair Trade certified since 2008. Dyer Island Cruises has been cited as a socially responsible tourism company in two publications. Wilfred is changing the way the shark cage diving industry is viewed and enjoys support of other conservation organisations. He has structured a business model that not only creates employment but also benefits the environment and is aimed at protecting our marine heritage.

Every day funds are raised from clients visiting the companies and this supports the work of the Trust. Wilfred’s companies support the Trust in various ways, ultimately contributing a R1million towards research and conservation.

The area is also visited by Bryde’s whales and Humpback whales but most renowned for the Southern right whales that visit these shores from June to December.

The last of the Marine Big Five is the dolphins of which three species delight visitors – common dolphin, bottlenose and the shy humpback dolphins.

Wilfred Chivell

It is this marine heritage that entrepreneur and conservationist, Wilfred Chivell, strives to protect.

Wilfred has a diverse background from working as a President’s guard; diving for treasure, literally, as he discovered the biggest coin collection of a wreck called the Nicobar; to owning his own construction company in the 90s when sadly the recession hit and he had to close doors.

But perhaps not so sadly, he then took his passion for the sea and its marine life and has made a successful living from it while contributing to the conservation of an area he loves with a passion. Starting off with a rubber dinghy in 2000 he started a whale watching company called Dyer Island Cruises.

He took his own calls and handled most aspects of the business himself and slowly started building a new vision. He then purchased a shark cage diving company in 2005 called Marine Dynamics and has changed much in an industry that could be used purely for financial gain.

He has supported three marine biologists in completing their Master’s degrees and continues to assist PhD studies. This also meant Wilfred became incredibly interested in sharks and some of the research that has come from the team is groundbreaking and includes: population dynamics through fin identification; wound healing; predatory interactions; foraging ecology and seasonal behaviour.

Wilfred also cares about the promotion of the area as a tourist destination and supports tourism efforts.

He has been involved in the protection and accessibility of the Klipgat Caves, commemorates the Birkenhead Memorial every year through a special trip on the whale and shark boats.

The coins Wilfred discovered on the wreck of the Nicobar are held at the Cultural History Museum in Cape Town and the Royal Coin Cabinet in Stockholm, Sweden.

That has now grown into a very successful award winning eco-tourism business especially due to the research, conservation and education work of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust Wilfred established in 2006.

Wilfred himself will declare he prefers animals to people (except for those people just as passionate about animals) and his passion for the African penguin and its plight led to him creating the ‘Faces of Need’ housing project for this flightless bird.

This project has grown over the last ten years with more than 2000 penguin homes, designed by Wilfred, on the protected Dyer Island - the penguin colony there having declined by 90% in 30 years - and other colonies. Wilfred initiated two penguin conferences and pushed for the penguin to be listed as endangered. A dream of his finally came true in 2015 when he opened the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary, a state of that art rehabilitation facility which has already saved more than 120 seabirds in its first year.

Wilfred’s whole ethos is based on conservation and protection of the environment. Measures are even in place at the Great White House from recycling, support of the SASSI fish programme, reduction of waste, using less chemicals, inclusion of a solar geyser and low wattage light bulbs. The boats use low emission engines. He encourages guests and tour operators to consider that “Your Choice Makes a Difference.”

When the adult penguins moult at the end of the year, if they have bred late, the penguin chicks are abandoned as the adult can no longer feed them.

They are removed into care and then released to become the next breeding generation.

This is crucial considering there are only an estimated 18000 breeding pairs left. The population has dropped over 60% in the last 30 years.

Wilfred is the ideas man whose plan for a Marine Educational and Resource Centre saw the first privately owned whale exhibit erected in the Great White House - a prelude to this vision and a dream many years in the making.

Wilfred is passionate about whales, is part of the SA Whale Disentanglement network and has dedicated boats for rescues.

He has also developed a special rescue cradle already put to use twice for removal of a deceased great white on Dyer and a washed up Bryde’s whale. Wilfred constantly strives for perfection and expects the same from his large team of more than eighty employees while at the same time encouraging them to be confident and take as much from all the experiences they are exposed to for their own personal growth.

Wilfred’s vision is to build on what exists and create an internationally recognized Centre in Gansbaai that will attract tourists and locals, a place where scientists, conservationists, investors and locals meet and work together towards sustainable marine utilization, conservation, marine research and socio-economic upliftment.

R1,2 MILLION RAISED FOR NEW ICU AT RED CROSS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL One month into a public appeal to raise the last R10 million for the R100 millionplus expansion and upgrade of the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and the R1 million mark has just been surpassed.

The project will see significantly improved intensive care services delivered to critically ill and injured children from in South Africa and the rest of the African continent. Capacity will also be greatly increased, addressing the desperate need for more beds to treat some of the country’s sickest little patients.

With the lion share of the funding already secured for the building of this lifesaving unit, the Children’s Hospital Trust – the official fundraisers for the Red Cross Children’s Hospital – have made an emotive appeal to the public to help them raise the final R10 million to complete the building. R1 243 715 million of this target has now been reached, so there is still a way to go to reach the final target of R10m by the end of June.

Currently the 22-bed PICU at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital is the largest ICU for children in Africa.

It provides emergency care for critically ill or injured children from all over South Africa as well as other African countries. The demand is driven by the increases in surgery requirements and escalations in detection of serious illnesses. In essence, the demands on this unit are higher than its capacity to deliver.

“Thanks to the generosity of the South African community, we are slowly but surely inching our way towards our R10 million goal. This project will enable this life-saving unit to help heal thousands of young children so we appeal to all of you to please donate to help us to complete the bigger and better ICU brand new ICU. Even a small donation can make a huge difference,” says Louise Driver, CEO of the Children’s Hospital Trust.

by October 2017. The 22-bed facility will increase to 39 bed spaces, and will include an urgently needed 10-bed High Care Neonatal Unit as well as isolation cubicles.

BEATING LYMPHOMA Progress Report on “The Newspaper Challenge” to SoundWaves Health Clinic in the January 2016 Edition: A volunteer assigned by “The Newspaper” visited the SoundWaves Health Clinic in Gordon’s Bay for consultation.

A full Body Scan indicated the presence of Lymphoma and the relevant Bio Resonance (Frequency) Therapy Treatment Programme was suggested: Cleanse and detox the liver; detox the blood from heavy metals; kill viruses, bacteria and parasites, molds and fungi in the body. The volunteer had live up to end of the bargain by following the dietary prescriptions for cancer patients, avoid man-made medication, avoid supplements/food containing a given list of harmful ingredients, exercise and cut down on stress .

Feeling healthier than ever before, our volunteer faces each day with an overall sense of well-being. The volunteer has shed about 3 kilograms since eating healthier food – and intends to keep it up!

Patients suffer devastating side effects during, but also long after, conventional cancer treatment, i.e. radiation burns; agonizing pains; headaches; chronic fatigue; vomiting; diarrhoea; impairment of vision/hearing – just to name a few. The high care unit and the isolation cubicles will ensure optimal treatment through better infection control, which is critical in ICU. The expansion and upgrade will also create more comfortable and supportive spaces for parents as well as breastfeeding mothers. Currently, family members have no privacy or space between life-saving equipment as they sit vigil at their child’s side. Increased space will also mean that staff, who work very long hours saving lives in tough conditions, will have adequate support facilities.

The Children’s Hospital Trust works in collaboration with the Western Cape Government: Health. The provincial government will contribute R30 million towards the ICU.

SPYGLASS SYSTEM

IMPORTANT STEP FORWARD FOR MEDICINE The SpyGlass DS Direct Visualization System may sound like something out of the latest James Bond movie, but it is actually new medical technology that was recently introduced at a private hospital in Cape Town.

The technology was acquired by the Digestive Diseases Centre (DDC) of UCT Private Academic Hospital, and is designed to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients suffering from a range of pancreatic and biliary disorders. According to Professor Eduard Jonas, a surgeon who practises at the DDC, the SpyGlass enables doctors to directly and more accurately visualise these systems.

“The technology significantly enhances our diagnostic capabilities in enabling direct visualisation of lesions,” observes Prof Jonas, who is also the head of the Surgical Gastroenterology/Hepatobiliary Unit at the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital.

“Establishing the precise nature of indeterminate strictures in the biliary and ductal systems has been a longstanding challenge. The Spyglass is particularly valuable in that it allows us to better investigate indeterminate bile duct strictures. It also offers more options for the management of difficult bile duct and pancreatic stones.”

Prof Jonas explains that the SpyGlass DS System is a refinement of an earlier device, offering better image quality with four times higher resolution and a 60% wider field of view. It also offers a channel which enables devices and guidewires to be passed through it. Such devices may include, for example, a biopsy forceps for directed biopsies of diseased tissue under direct vision, and laser technologies that are able to break down difficult biliary and pancreatic stones.

According to Lieselle Shield, general manager of UCT Private Academic Hospital (UCTPAH), the new SpyGlass technology is not available to patients in public hospitals in the Western Cape at present.

Shield says that the SpyGlass, which is manufactured by Boston Scientific in the United States, is an important advance in the field of hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) and academic medicine in the Western Cape.

“Technology such as this strengthens UCTPAH’s position as a centre of learning excellence and will serve to advance our medical knowledge, particularly as it will be applied in a limited resources context and in our populations with their unique disease profiles.”

“Furthermore, Spyglass ensures that UCTPAH will remain at the cutting edge in the management of HPB diseases in South Africa. We applaud the DDC for taking the initiative to partner with the hospital to introduce this cutting-edge medical technology,” concludes Shield.

Training 1 Million Young People in digital skills

City’s Free Public Wireless Internet Zones Pass the 200 mark

The City now has 201 public Wi-Fi zones clustered in 78 locations spread across the metro area. In the past week, more than 84 000 residents have used the service.

Most of the Wi-Fi zones installed so far are in suburbs and centres that have been neglected by commercial service providers, or where residents find commercial internet services too expensive. The Wi-Fi service operates on top of the City’s fibre-optic network, which both reduces the direct costs and ensures a high quality of service.

“Our high-grade access points are connected to fibre-optic cables, which means that users enjoy access speeds of around 40 MB per second,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services and Compliance, Councillor Xanthea Limberg.”

“The City has partnered with Always On, a commercial Wi-Fi provider which manages the connection to each user device and pays for the bandwidth. In exchange for the use of City’s network, Always On gives 100 MB of data to every user each day.”

By 2020 there’ll be half a billion internet users in Africa, presenting an opportunity for African businesses and digital entrepreneurs. Youth unemployment across Africa is high (35% in South Africa, 17% in Kenya, 13% in Nigeria) - developing digital entrepreneurship and creating new job opportunities for young people is critical to Africa’s transformative growth, but digital skills are still under-developed, making it harder for African economies to get the most out of the web.

Since its inception, over 460 000 residents have used the public Wi-Fi service.

“These are unique users, each of whom may have connected to the service multiple times.

Last week, 338 438 connections were made by 84 070 different users.”

Google is supporting Livity Africa to run two training programs: Digify Bytes, aimed at helping young people develop a digital career; and Digify Pro, a 3-month immersion program to develop digital specialists for jobs in companies or digital agencies. They also launched digifyafrica.com - an online-learning portal that will house a range of digital skills tutorials and courses. Available to anyone in Africa, it’s been designed to be as “light” as possible to help people manage data usage.

The Digify programs (which are all free) will provide tools & knowledge on subjects including building an online presence, creating content, understanding web design and user experience, social media and app development. A group of 65 Googlers from 9 different countries have helped Livity develop content, provide mentorship and, in some cases, deliver the training.

Google is also talking to a number of other potential partners across Africa with a view to scaling the digital skills training program and helping to reach even more young people in more countries.

More needs to be done to support people in Africa to succeed in the digital world, and Google want to be part of that. The internet offers huge opportunities to start new businesses and grow existing ones, and they are committed to helping Africans make the most of the digital revolution.

THE STORY OF PAUL ENGLISH - HE CAN; HE WILL AND HE DID! Paul English, a 36 year old writer from Somerset West, was born with the same inexplicable undiagnosed syndrome with congenital abnormalities, as his elder brother Mark. The challenges that had to be dealt with since babyhood would probably make most of us throw a lifelong “pity party” – but not Paul!

Before he was 3 years old he had to start wearing a patch on his left eye to strengthen his right eye and correct his squint - not easy for a toddler at nursery school! This continued until age 6, but without much success. Paul now has the use of only one eye, though prescription glasses have enabled one of his favourite hobbies – reading. Sadly, as a child he was cruelly nicknamed “four-eyes,” because of his thick lenses.

Continual ear infections and several attempts at grommets resulted in burst eardrums. An ENT specialist suggested a hearing test – which indicated major hearing loss in both ears. Hearing aids made a huge difference, but young Paul had to cope with curious stares (and remarks) from his peers.

Paul's first novel “Fire Angel: Genesis”

X-Rays revealed scoliosis and kyphosis (outward spine curvature). After several months of wearing a thoracic brace, 12 year old Paul was given an extremely uncomfortable full brace.

This had to be worn for 21 hours a day.

People often stared, oblivious of what this young boy was going through.

Summer times were stressful, wearing a vest under the brace to protect his skin - limiting time to cool off in the pool with friends.

Paul did not want to copy the stereotype male hero with a perfect body and all the techno gadgets. His Superhero is Haley, a sassy but kind-hearted teenager living in a crime ridden lower-working class neighbourhood, with fears of retrenchment looming over her parents.

A meteorite crashes down in their suburb, causing certain fascinating after-effects in Haley. She discovers very unusual “powers” and often acts impulsively, landing up in some sticky situations. Soon she is being hounded by unscrupulous people who want to reap huge benefits for themselves. Haley quickly learns not to trust anyone- not even the scientists, with their own secret agenda.

Disappointingly his condition deteriorated, which meant an operation to implant rods & clips to support & strengthen his back. By then Paul was 13 years old with several years of growth still ahead, so only the lower vertebrae were fused, leaving the upper section free. He still had to wear a thoracic brace for a few more years, though for shorter periods. X-Rays at age 16 revealed no marked difference, and Paul was informed he’d reached his maximum growth - hence his short stature today.

Furthermore, Paul was born with flat feet with significant pronation (inward rolling).

At age 3 he had to wear built-up shoes to counteract the pains in his knees and feet, but even today walking is still an arduous painful activity.

Paul attended a Remedial School where classes were limited to 12 students.

Sports participation was restricted due to his physical problems, but otherwise he was the usual youngster with friends. He didn’t excel academically and only finished Grade 9 - Maths being his worst subject; Creative Writing his best. He found school boring and felt it kept him from drawing & writing!

The children’s TV series “Transformers” awoke the desire to write in 7 year old Paul, but the inspiration to create his own Superhero came many years later from Stan Lee’s “Spiderman”.

After a few attempts he decided to take a course in Creative Writing, which gave him a much better foundation. He regrets not having done that first of all and earnestly recommends this to aspiring writers.

A writer definitely not to be disturbed!

The story reveals a good mix of characters and enough action to keep the tension running. The title of the soon-to-be-published sequel – “Fire Angel: Turning Point” – speaks of change and growth, so we’ll have to wait and see how life turns out for this young Superhero and her family. Paul promises interesting new twists and turns!

He confesses there is a little bit of him in Haley: courage in the face of difficulties, played down by a quirky sense of humour.

He recalls a Guidance Counsellor telling him, “You’ll never be as good as Wilbur Smith.”

Today Paul says, “I don’t want to be as good as Wilbur Smith; I want to be as good as Paul English”!

To hear him talk about his work with so much passion and fiery enthusiasm makes one forget his numerous limitations. His favourite T-shirt sports the phrase “I can, I will.” He has taken this as his personal motto: he decided he can write and publish, and he will write and publish – and he did.

His message to fellow writers?

“Write the story you’d want to read.”

Since 2008, energy prices have been steadily increasing at an average rate of just under 19% per year across all sectors. With alternative energy sources becoming more affordable and accessible, more and more people are opting to invest in these as a means of curbing energy inflation.

To become more energy efficient, however, one needs to know where the energy is going. If you know where your energy is going, you know where to start your energy savings initiative. This also helps in the design and sizing of any alternative energy solution.

The typical IRR (investment rate of return) is between 24 and 30% over 25 years”. xRg is not a “one-size-fit-all” type of company. In this area their main focus is largely photovoltaics as it is currently still the cheapest per installed Watt of all other renewables. Photovoltaics, however, is not the only renewable xRg specialise in, with wind and hydropower also being part of their salvo.

“The great thing about photovoltaics is their affordability”, says co-founder Dieter Voges. “Currently, when designed for self-consumption (all energy generated is utilised, with no feeding or selling back of energy to the utility), the current payback is between 4.5 and 7 years, depending on the electricity tariff plan you are currently on.”

For a photovoltaic system, for example, this market segment would normally require the use of a battery system. This is because the energy is mostly consumed at times when there is no sun, i.e. early mornings and evenings. Any excess energy produced by such a system needs to be stored for later use. What makes a system like this quite attractive is that the governing power utility becomes the back-up provider, not the main provider. xRg also provide off-grid solutions, especially when it is large enough to make use of the micro-grid concept.

Micro-grids are, in general terms, an off-grid system making use of a variety of energy sources at the same time, ie photovoltaics, wind, hydro and diesel generators. Each sub-system is optimally sized so that initial investment and operating costs are minimised, while still maintaining a high uptime probability. This is a very exciting field, with endless possibilities.

FanCon: Cape Town Comic Con is a comic convention held at The Lookout, V&A Waterfront from 7-8 May 2016. This is the first event of its kind to take place in South Africa and the 2 day show promises a host of entertainment for all lovers of comics and geek & pop culture.

Underwater Photographer of the Year 2016 Coming to South Africa for the first time, the Underwater Photographer of the Year 2016 exhibition will be showcased at the Chavonnes Battery Museum, Clock Tower, V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, from 1 May to 30 September 2016 in partnership with the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI).

The 41 images cover 8 categories, 3 of which are exclusively in British Waters while the rest are a selection from 54 countries including South Africa, UK, Mexico, Russia, Indonesia, Egypt, Jordan, Malta and Italy. These spectacular images invite you to explore fascinating perspectives and interesting insights into our world underwater and on land from underwater. South African Pier Mane, is the winner of the Up & Coming Underwater Photographer of the Year 2016 for his image titled “Three Pillars - Practice, Patience & Luck!” The overall winner, Davide Lopresti’s image titled “Gold”, is an artistic portrait of a spiny seahorse taken in Trieste, Italy.

Underwater Highlighting issues of conservation Photographer and endangered species can also be of the Year found in Mane’s 2016 image of a Hawksbill Sea Turtle found in Sodwana Bay off the coast of SA and Prieto’s picture titled “What feeds beneath” of an endangered Hawaiian Petrel snapped in Mexico.

2016 GF&WS Theme Uncorked The Good Food & Wine Show (GF&WS) needs no introduction. It is the biggest culinary event – and exhibition platform – in Africa, and it welcomes almost a million gourmets and good-life lovers through its door each year.

Presented by Fiera Milano Exhibitions Africa (FMEA) the theme for this year’s GF&WS is “Fresh”. This is apt not only because of international food trends, but also because of the show’s fresh new look and feel.

The 2016 GF&WS is taking place in Cape Town from 27 – 29 May at the Cape Town International Convention centre. In keeping with its theme, it will explore the latest trends in lifestyle and design, as well as urban / rural integration.

Test Your Endurance at the AMARIDER 100Miler The eighth edition of The Amarider 100Miler will be presented by The Bike Hub and will take place in Malmesbury on the 21st of May. This individual one-day mountain bike ultra-marathon of 160km is affordable and a very special event.

From the humbling beginnings that grew in 2009 to what is now one of the must-do-events on the mountain biking calendar. The scenery is beautiful in the Swartland during Autumn and the riding is not technical. The weather conditions play a major role in testing your endurance, as mud, wind or rain do on most outdoor events.

This event will start early morning just as the sun is rising, with astounding scenery that is spellbound to keep the legs going for many hours. Only pre-entries will be accepted for both distances.

Entries are limited and remember that this is a seeding event for Die Burger MTB Challenge 2016.

The team results will be based on the 4th rider crossing the line thereby encouraging teamwork and camaraderie.

The 160km (100Miler) route is divided into three sections of approximately 55km with two compulsory timing checkpoints. The format of the race creates perfect vantage points for spectators and support. While the competition is based on solo riders completing the entire course these riders can form 4-man teams and enjoy a day out with mates on a saddle (of course)!

The shorter route option of the 50Miler (80km), starts at the halfway mark at Riebeeck Kasteel and ends with the 100Miler riders at the Malmesbury Showgrounds.

This event also provides an opportunity for keen riders to taste endurance riding along with twist and turns against the clock.

Bett and Salel back to duel in the Mother City In a massive coup for the FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN, Stillwater Sports announced that the defending champion Emmanuel Bett, and the man who pushed him to the brink, Daniel Salel, (both from Kenya) will both be back to relive their battle in the Mother City come Sunday, 15 May. Third placed finisher Timothy Toroitich from Uganda will also be joining them.

There is every reason to believe that 2016 will be just as entertaining as both athletes have shown great early season form as they prepare themselves for the Olympic Games in Rio. Bett has already been active on the roads this year, racing in two major international half marathons and clocking 61:55 at the RAK Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon in the UAE in February and 62:37 at the highly competitive Lisboa Half Marathon (Lisbon) in March. Salel too has been active, racing at the world best 10km in San Juan on 28 February and finishing 12th, clocking 29:14.

More impressive though is his 30:10 on 31 January in Eldoret, Kenya.

As in previous years, Toroitich has been very active off the track and roads, hitting the cross country circuit with some success. He was second in Amorebieta, 3rd in Sevilla and 4th at Muguerza Elgoibar whilst racing the prestigious Spanish Cross Country Circuit.

In a sprint finish that lasted the entire final kilometre of the 2015 race, the lead changed hands on three occasions until Bett was finally able to out-dip Salel on the line.

Salel has come very close to breaking the 27 minute barrier in the 10 000m. To run 27 minutes is the mark of an athlete that has achieved super status on the world stage, and Salel is not far off. He was also second at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in the 10 000m. Bett has broken the 27-minute barrier twice. The first time in 2011 when he ran 26:51.95 in Brussels and then a year later at the same meeting Bett went 26:51.16. Only 51 athletes in the history of 10 000m racing have been able to achieve a sub 27-minute time.

Bett has also run 28:07 for the 10km on the roads, whilst Salel has run 27:41.

Should the runners hit world best times at these points, they too will be ratified on the international stage, a stage which has now been set to once again bring some of the best athletes ever to be seen in South Africa, back to the Mother City.
