The Cape2Rio yacht race is set to return to Cape Town this December with a thrilling line-up and a new presenting sponsor. The Cape2Rio presented by Maserati gets underway on 26 December with the first start, while the larger Racing fleet starts on 1 January 2017. Having started in 1971, the race will go into its 46th year in 2017. From the very beginning the Cape2Rio, the longest transatlantic ocean race at 3500 nautical miles or 5500km, has attracted interest from around the world and enticed some of the planet’s most celebrated sailors and yachts to its start line. Tactical and testing, the race demands the finest seamanship of its participants. This latest edition is no different, with the best in show from 10 different countries ready to set sail from Cape Town.

Film Industry On The Rise! Western Cape MEC for Economic Opportunities, Alan Winde, City of Cape Town Executive Mayor, Patricia de Lille, and a Wesgro delegation recently met with senior executives in Hollywood at Universal studios, Warner Bros and Walt Disney studios.
REALTY Page 9
The visits were aimed at furthering opportunities for growth in the film sector through the attraction of additional film and television series by major studios, and to understand first-hand what would be required to achieve this. The purpose of these meetings were also to try and convince film studios to increase their investment in the city. Such investment would increase jobs, both directly in the industry and indirectly in the service industry. Cape Town is able to offer highly skilled crews at competitive rates. The industry has enjoyed its projects shot at Cape Town studios and the need for capacity has been reaffirmed, validating the City's strategy to try and increase the spaces and facilities for more filming to take place. Cape Town’s popularity as a filming destination is constantly growing as film studios are always booked.

In the 12-edition history of the race, the race for line honours, or first over the finish line, has fallen 10 times. “There remains much room to better this record and with the global proliferation in trimaran and multihull offshore racing machines, the record is definitely under threat,” says Simon Borchert, Cape2Rio event director. Aiming for handicap honours will be the likes of Vulcan and the Black Pearl. Vulcan is a GP 42, and is skippered and owned by South African sailor Hylton Hale who has been preparing the boat meticulously for the race. Designed by fellow South African Shaun Carkeek, Vulcan has undergone an extensive refit in preparation for the offshore conditions and is a real contender for the overall winner’s trophy. Their battle with the Black Pearl, a German entrant, could shape up as the most potentially thrilling battle of the event. Another entry to watch is Gryphon, a crew that celebrates the diversity and depth of sailing skill that Cape Town has to offer. Cape Town continues to produce some of the very best sailors and marine artisans in the world, and this team is a testament to that.

"Maserati South Africa is incredibly proud to be associated with Cape Town's premier sailing events, especially as we have a long history with sailing, both locally and internationally. There is a clear synergy between the majestic yachts, the daring sport of sailing, and Maserati's tradition of craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology," said Brad Graaff, Operations Manager for European Automotive Imports South Africa (EAI-SA).

THE MOTHER CITY BOOM! CTICC EAST ON TRACK FOR 2017 OPENING
WELLNESS Page 5
After leaving Cape Town, participants head north-west towards the island of Ilha de Trinidad, and south-west from there towards South America. As they near the coast, skippers need to decide whether to take the longer route with stronger winds, or a more direct route with the chance of lighter winds.

After hosting a successful Cape Construction Expo 2016 recently, the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) is proud to announce that it is on track to open its CTICC East expansion in 2017. Construction to CTICC East, which started in 2014, 11 years after CTICC West officially opened its doors, compliments other construction developments taking place on Cape Town’s Foreshore including the Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital and KPMG Place.
SU SATELLITE READY FOR LAUNCH FROM INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION
A nanosatellite developed by Stellenbosch University (SU) and CubeSpace, an Innovus incubation company in the Nedbank SU LaunchLab business incubator, is to be launched with 49 other nanosatellites from the International Space Station (ISS) in January 2017. The South African nanosatellite, ZA-AeroSat, weighing in at only 2 kg, is the only satellite from Africa forming part of an international project, the QB50 project, to launch 50 nanosatellites known as “CubeSats” – each about 10 cm x 10 cm x 20 cm (smaller than a shoebox) − from the ISS to gather measurements from the lower thermosphere between 200 km and 400 km above Earth.
A key milestone in the construction of the building has started with the glazing of the Western façade. The next steps will be to commence the roof sheeting scheduled to start in September and the fitting of the cold rooms and kitchens due to start at the end of October.
ZA-AeroSat will be taken to Delft in the Netherlands, where it will be packed with the other satellites before being shipped to the USA and transported to the ISS in December of this year.

SA Photographer Wins Red Bull Illume Competition Superior photographic talent, passion for the outdoors and split-second timing have culminated in two, separately awe-inspiring images, resulting in two of South Africa’s most extreme sports’ photographers being shortlisted for the unmatched Red Bull Illume photographic competition. Two of Cape Town’s extreme sports’ photographers Micky Wiswedel and Kelvin Trautman have been selected from some 5 645 international photographers from 120 countries as finalists in the prestigious Red Bull Illume photographic competition. The contest - considered one of the world’s greatest action and adventure sports’ photography competitions the world over - brought these talented individuals together at the awards’ ceremony in Chicago. The overall winner, as well as the 11 category winners, were announced and the images unveiled as part of the Red Bull Illume Exhibit Tour. Wiswedel won the ‘Wings’ category for his shot of climber Jamie Smith mid-fall as he attempts a new route on Table Mountain, Cape Town. He would like to see the exhibition come to the mother city. Its iconic landmark Table Mountain also featured in Trautman’s photograph which was selected runner up in the ‘Mobile’ category added this year. Judged by a panel of 53 photo editors, all working within prominent international sports, news, lifestyle and photography publications, the top 55 photographs represent masterful imagery taken in extremely difficult environments. Renowned for his incredible rock climbing imagery, 38-year-old Micky Wiswedel said he couldn’t contain himself when he learnt he was a finalist. Wiswedel’s after-work passion was rock climbing and he constantly found himself in amazing places, watching inspiring people in action, yet nobody he knew was capturing these experiences. He bought a camera and started putting his newfound knowledge to the test. This simple act has resulted in a career that sees him travelling to some of the world’s most beautiful locations, meeting interesting people while capturing real-life experiences. This was certainly true for his winning image that depicts close friend and rock climber, Jimbo Smith, captured mid-fall while attempting a new climbing route at Jeopardy Wall on Table Mountain, known as the Squid and Whale.
Photo Credit: Micky Wiswedel / Red Bull Illume
33-year-old Kelvin Trautman, captured his image while out running with his girlfriend, Sabrina Chesterman on Table Mountain’s Platteklip Gorge. “That morning we decided to run together and I had my phone more for safety reasons than photographic,” explained the Zimbabwe-born photographer. “We got to the gorge and Sabrina was a little behind me. As I turned, the vista opened up. It was one of those ‘aha’ moments.” Another South African photographer, Wayne Reiche, made it to the top 275 for his image of BMXer Murray Loubser submitted in the ‘Playground’ category.
Film Industry On The Rise!
(Continue from page 1)
The industry has expressed some concern with National Government's barriers on entry in terms of the four-week filming minimum imposed by DTI on productions, and the barrier on filming pilots. This prevents pilots being shot in Cape Town, which limits projects coming to the city given that 70% of approved pilots shoot the series in the same location. Pilots often lead to multiple-episode, multiple-year series productions, and pilots need to be seen as an opportunity to secure this business. Further, the incentives would limit production companies to three productions each, which has implications for established production firms which have built up reliable reputations and skills over years that give big international studios confidence in their local production partners. Getting temporary work permits for actors and directors was another issue which was raised. The Minister and Mayor agreed jointly to address these issues, through discussions with DTI and the Department of Home Affairs. “It was also agreed that we would assess the possibility of making under-utilised Provincial and City property available for film locations.” The upcoming revision to the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) film incentive scheme was raised as a potential lever to increase business, if key provisions currently in the draft version are addressed and strengthened before it is passed.
The delegation was also pleased to announce that it is currently attempting to convert the Cape Town Film Studio into the first ‘green’ film studio in Africa. Due to demand, it has also just completed the building of another stage, bringing the total number of stages to five.

Winning Bid to Host the 2022 (IUIS2022)
for Wheelchair-friendly Park in Brackenfell
It is the first time the congress is being hosted in Africa and the Cape will welcome 6 000 delegates who are expected to bring a bounty of knowledge to the province.
Officially opened in 2014, the City’s Thibault Play Park in Brackenfell uses an inclusive approach to allow children with disabilities to play alongside others.
The field of immunology delivers advances in basic and clinical research that affect the lives of billions worldwide. Vaccines save lives, especially among children, and anti-inflammatory drugs improve the quality of life of countless autoimmune disease patients. The field is driving breakthroughs that promise to revolutionise vaccines, treatments for cancer, autoimmunity, allergy and immune deficiencies, and to improve the outcomes of transplantation.
The local ward councillor, Carin Brynard, provided a budget from her ward allocation for the first phase of this park and the creative mind behind the play park was Willem Myburgh of the City Parks Department. Willem worked in collaboration with the Paarl School and other individuals to design and make this park a reality. The Paarl School for neurally handicapped children is adjacent to the park, and the children make use of the park daily during their breaks.
Led by South African Immunology Society (SAIS) President and Professor of Immunology at UCT, Clive Gray and Federation of African Immunology Societies (FAIS) Secretary General Faith Osier (based at KEMRI-Welcome Trust in Kilifi, Kenya) , Cape Town’s hosting bid beat other major competing cities: London, Paris, Toronto and Mexico City. IUIS President Prof. Mantovani is sure that "hosting" IUIS2022 in Cape Town will bring together the best of immunology worldwide from basic science to translation, tackling global problems, ranging from veterinary health to human cancer, infection and degenerative diseases." “Our task will be to build a pre-conference legacy over the next six years by galvanizing the best minds on the continent and growing new minds to become part of the global immunology community.” “In 2022, we want to bring the world’s best and most exciting immunologists to Cape Town and task them to put their minds to the infectious disease burden in Africa and translate immunology to Human health,” co-Chair Prof. Clive Gray. CTICC Chief Executive Officer Julie-May Ellingson says that it is an honour to host such a high-calibre medical conference. “The healthcare and medical sectors are well-represented in our forward book which reflects Cape Town’s growing profile as an academic and research hub. We look forward to working with the local organising committee to create a meaningful and exceptional event.”
RESTAURANT & WINE BAR
The latest upgrade started in October 2015 and included expanding the hardened park surface with water-wise artificial turf and constructing a 160m long wheelchair obstacle course.
Additional wheelchair-friendly play park equipment was installed as part of this current upgrade, including a see-saw. The upgrades were completed earlier this year. The residents of Thibault Street have taken pride in the play park and are involved with maintenance tasks and locking the park after dark. The City of Cape Town has partnered with the Paarl School to provide physiotherapy services to park users. The physiotherapist, Reinet Barnard, and facilitator, Mark Lewis (both from the Paarl School), assist people in wheelchairs who want to make use of the facility. If other schools or institutions are interested in making use of this training facility, they are encouraged to make contact with the Paarl School.
Dunkin’ Donuts Opens In SA Five people queued for over 25 hours to be the first South Africans to get a taste of Dunkin’ Donuts. The first restaurant, located in Goodwood opened its doors on 13 October and crowds were treated to special giveaways, donut-shaped trampolines and performances by The Kiffness, Early B and Derek Plaatjies. “South Africa is the 45th country to join the Dunkin’ family and we have been overwhelmed by the support we’ve received from Capetonians. With the first restaurant now open, South African coffee connoisseurs and donut aficionados can look forward to enjoying the smooth Dunkin’ Donuts Original Blend, Lattes and Cappuccinos, as well as a variety of 28 different donuts – including the world-famous Boston Kreme.”

Le Riche Naturals - Rare & Exotic Botanicals Blended to Perfection Founder and owner of Le Riche Naturals, Lushinka Louw, dedicated years of research to create the finest in natural skin care products that promise superior skin health and provide exceptionally fast results through best formulations, ingredient preservation and innovation. How did the business start? Le Riche Naturals started with two troubled skins needing special attention! My 18-month-old daughter was suffering with severe eczema, which she inherited from me. I tried various approaches but her skin remained dry and scaly. I decided to formulate a cream that would suit her skin. It was crucial that the cream enrich, replenish, moisturise and keep her skin nourished, without forming a sticky layer. As a result, the Rich Hand and Body Ganache was born. This process inspired me to formulate and produce my own product range, which technique I obtained based on my experience as an industrial engineer and trained manufacturing specialist. What makes your product different from other products? The products are crafted in small concentrated batches in a controlled laboratory, and preserved by making use of the best available packaging technology for distribution, storage and selling. The raw ingredients are not refined beyond recognition. Great care is taken to ensure the natural bioactivity of ingredients is maintained. We achieve results by implementing the following philosophies. Firstly, the range is focussed on maintaining your skin's natural barrier function as a central priority. When your skin becomes calmer and more robust, you know the product is working. Secondly, we believe in natural ingredients for natural skin. Lastly, we believe in maintaining as many phytonutrients as possible, as this ensures active ingredients are much more readily utilised. When using the products, customers soon notice the characteristic Le Riche glow!
Regenerating Night Balm - Rich in Omega 3,6,7,9, Vitamin E, long-acting oil soluble Vitamin C and bursting with naturally occurring carotenoids (precursor to Vitamin A), this product yields dramatic results. Apply it at night for a rich regenerating treatment. It also doubles as an excellent EYE CREAM. Suitable for normal, dry and mature skin. Brightening Face Mask - Containing the bioflavonoid Hesperidin (Vitamin P), this mask works on strengthening the tiny veins in the skin, utilising its vasoprotective properties, while deeply nourishing and brightening the complexion. Suitable for normal, dry and mature skin. Miracle Day Cream - Rich in the legendary Hyaluronic Acid (the skin's natural hydrating factor) and phospholipids, this moisturising cream is all about leaving your skin hydrated and velvety soft. For an additional hydration boost, layer this cream over the Cape Mountain Youth Elixir or Regenerating Night Balm. Suitable for normal, dry and mature skin. Luxe oil cleansers - The special emulsifier in these cleansers has been shown to inhibit the adherence of bacteria to the surface of the skin, and along with its self-emulsifying properties, it is effective at reducing blackheads and clearing impurities without ever drying your skin. For oily and combination skin use the Lavender & Spearmint cleanser. For normal, dry and mature skin, use the Sweet Orange cleanser. Polishing Face Scrub - Refreshing, uplifting and utterly indulgent, the polishing face scrub is a concentrated blend of natural skinloving ingredients. Use this 1 - 3 times per week to remove dead skin cells and prepare your skin to absorb the complementary products in the range more effectively.
What are the benefits of your products? These luxurious products are hand crafted to the highest standards using only 100% pure, natural, organic, bio-dynamic and wild crafted ingredients, made especially for women who prefer to nourish their skin with non-toxic top quality natural butters and oils, high in essential fatty acids. Le Riche Naturals leaves skin remarkably glowing after only one application, and is known for its mood-enhancing qualities: a complete feeling of blissful confidence and wellbeing. Every single product plays a targeted role in nourishing and repairing your skin on a cellular level. The products contain no harsh surfactants or penetration enhancers that diminish your skin’s natural ability to maintain optimum health.
Tell us about the products in the Le Riche Naturals range? The Top Sellers in the Le Riche Naturals range are the Luxe Oil Cleanser, the Miracle Day Cream, the Polishing Face Scrub and the Regenerating Night Balm. Other exciting products in this range include: Cape Mountain Youth Elixir, Rich Hand & Body Ganache, Brightening Face Mask and the Tropical Day Spa - Bath Soak and Scrub. Cape Mountain Youth Elixir - Containing approximately 65% Essential Fatty Acids and 6600IU Co-enzyme Q10 per 100ml, this Youth Elixir targets the energy centre of skin cells, invigorating and stimulating cell renewal. Suitable for all skin types.
Rich Hand and Body Ganache - Enriched with phospholipids and cholesterol to support the skin’s natural barrier function, it is an exceptionally rich, long acting product that is known to be extremely effective in dry skin prevention and relief. Made in a similar way to this classic chocolate and cream filling, it is like melting chocolate on your skin...only better. We offer four variations of our Rich Hand and Body Ganache: English Summer Garden, Lemon Meringue Pie, Peppermint Crisp Tart and Sensitive Skin. Tropical Day Spa Bath Soak and Scrub - Powdered hibiscus tea leaves give this product its rich red colour. Transform your bath into a luxurious mineral and anti-oxidant rich infusion, enhanced with pure essential oils that condition, perfume and revitalise your skin. What do you still want to achieve with your products? I’d like to improve the customer experience by developing more products, such as a luxurious, natural, hand poured perfume range. Le Riche Naturals is driven by innovation, combining cutting-edge new technologies and international trends to deliver a superlative customer experience. Where can you buy Le Riche Naturals products? CAPE TOWN’S RICH MILITARY HERITAGE CELEBRATED The military history of Cape Town gives locals and visitors a glimpse into the past where it all began hundreds of years ago. The launch of the Military Heritage Route forms part of Cape Town’s culture and heritage strategy with an abundance of museums and memorials. The Military Heritage Route, which includes the Castle of Good Hope, the South African Naval Museum in Simon’s Town, and the Chavonnes Battery Museum, showcases the rich military heritage. The Castle of Good Hope is the oldest surviving building in South Africa’s colonial era and has been the centre of civilian, political and military life at the Cape since 1666. It was initially erected as a fort and about 13 years later was turned into the Castle of Good Hope. It has survived many challenges in its time and in its current state the Castle possibly represents one of the best preserved 17th century buildings. The South African Naval Museum pays homage to the country’s rich naval history. There is also some very dramatic naval artwork on display in the museum, recalling in particular various sea battles fought during World War II. In the mid-1600s, Table Bay was the main docking point for ships surrounding the Cape of Good Hope. The little seaport of Simon's Town became the preferred harbour during the winter months in the Cape as it was less exposed to the hazardous storms. In 1971, Simon's Town officially became the winter anchorage and the town was developed to accommodate the busy naval port. The Chavonnes Battery Museum showcases archaeological ruins that were buried for over 140 years. Originally built in 1724 using rock from Table Mountain and cement made of sea shells, guests are able to step below sea-level among the ribs of this old VOC Fort. Here visitors are able to touch the sand of the original shoreline of the Cape of Storms/ Good Hope.

To keep the peace with our matriarch, we then researched 5 retirement estates in the Somerset West, Strand and Gordon’s Bay area. Our research included the following: type of house, purchase price, levy, rates, security, facilities available, type of ownership, conditions applicable for resale, escalation of asset, estates’ terrain, and nearby shopping facilities. Summervale Retirement Estate stood head and shoulders above the rest, especially being Freehold ownership with levies of the lowest, measuring a yearly increase of around three percent on average. The houses are face brick, which reduces the maintenance costs substantially. The terrain is level, and that makes walking a pleasure for Senior Citizens. The indoor heated pool is excellent for aerobics and health fitness exercise, and the restaurant provides well balanced meals throughout the week, while carvery is served by caring and well-mannered staff on Sundays.
Summervale is the only fully-fledged retirement facility in Gordon’s Bay, offering all the amenities and services commensurate with quality living during the retirement years. Launched in 2005, Summervale has grown into a vibrant and thriving community consisting of over 300 completed units and establishing itself as a benchmark in the Helderberg, attracting buyers from all over South Africa and abroad. A limited amount of units are still for sale. These units consist of own title houses which are sold on a plot and plan basis. A variety of well designed homes are available, ranging from two bedroom units with single garages to three bedroom units with double garages. Each puchaser’s individual preferences are incorporated in the final design of the unit, including a choice of various finishes. Units are designed to offer a low maintenance lifestyle, given the use of facebrick walls and aluminium windows. The interior design is modern, yet incorporates the specific needs of retirees. Buyers obtain full ownership of their units and as such have unfettered capital growth on their respective units. Early bird buyers at Summervale have seen unprecendented capital growth on their investment.
At the age of 82 my mother-in-law purchased a house and moved to Summervale and settled in quite happily. Although Portuguese speaking, she has been welcomed by her neighbours and made many friends and has added, “Goeie More” and “Hoe gaan dit?” to her vocabulary! The 24/7 professional nursing care made available to residence takes care of emergencies, and my mother-in-law had once called for assis- Photo L - R: Fatima & Fernie de Passos (Residents and Trustee of Summervale) tance – their track record speaks for itself. Shopping centres, Hospitals, Doctors, Dentists, Pharmacies, and Opticians are close by, limiting travel in heavy traffic to centres further away. Last year my wife decided we need be closer to her mother. I therefore undertook another research, based on similar lines, as mentioned above. Comparisons of the same type house revealed that value of my mother-in-law’s house had increased by 50% in three years. No restrictions regarding sale of house, choice of agent with no commission or added fees payable to the HOA - another great advantage. We took the plunge and bought plot and plan, living 3 houses away from motherin-law. It was a great experience to shop around and choose our tiles, flooring, the style of kitchen, and keeping within the specs and budget price permitted. Having now lived in our new home for 10 months, our asset has increased by 7%.As my wife says, “If we have more funds, we would purchase another property for investment purposes, as Summervale is still a bargain.”
A rental option at Summervale is also available in the form of 55 Garden Cottages of either a garage or carport.
You could not wish for better, the wonderful Mountain as a backdrop and the sea literary a 10 minute walk from Summervale. Not to mention that we are within a short distance from the winelands, and that is why we decided to settle at Summervale, mother-in-law and all!
It goes without saying that safety and security has become a very pertinent issue in our daily lives. In this regard Summervale is not lacking. The entire development is fenced with a 1.8m high wall and/or palisade fencing and is further secured with electrified fencing. A single manned entrance/exit gate with remote controlled access further enhances a safe environment. You will be glad to know that Summervale is located next to the biggest neighbourhood shopping centre in Gordon’s Bay. In order to enhance community living and a hands-free lifestyle, Summervale boasts a variety of communal facilities including: | Restaurant with dining room | Lounge with ladies bar | Library | Boardroom | | Cozy fireplace | Clubhouse with braai facilities | Undercover heated swimming pool |
Summervale is managed by an owners association together with a full time manager. The manager and her staff are responsible for the day to day operational functions. Pioneering Study Guiding Rehabilitation 29 Blue Flags for Western Cape Beaches of Vissershok Landfill
In 2010, authorisation was granted to extend the Vissershok landfill to provide an extra six to nine years of landfill capacity. A condition for the approval of this project was, however, that the City develop a master plan for the closure and rehabilitation of the site as a whole, once landfill operations at the current site cease.
Twenty-nine Western Cape beaches, all eight boats and four of the five Blue Flag marinas will be flying the Blue Flag this season as part of the National Blue Flag Programme, coordinated by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA), over the forthcoming 2016/17 South African Blue Flag season, which opens officially on 1 November. The following Cape Town beaches have attained full Blue Flag Full status: Silverstroomstrand, Melkbosstrand, Clifton 4th Beach, Camps Bay, Llandudno, Fishhoek, Muizenberg, Strandfontein, Mnandi, and Bikini Beach. Other areas in the Westerm Cape include: Kleinmond (Overstand), Hawston (Overstand), Grotto (Hermanus) Witsand (Hessequa), Santos (Mosselbay), Hartenbos (Mosselbay), Klein Brak (Mosselbay), Wilderness (Eden), Brenton-on-Sea (Knysna), Keurboomstrand (Bitou) and many more. The Blue Flag is an international accreditation awarded to beaches that display excellence through meeting 33 criteria. Participation in this international programme is voluntary and the status indicates that the beaches all have their own environmental education programmes, have bathing water of the highest standard, are clean, have adequate ablution facilities and parking, are environmentally sound, are safe and secure to visit, and adhere to international safety and tourism standards.

Part of this rehabilitation includes reducing the visual impact of the decommissioned landfill with landscaping and indigenous vegetation. In this regard, the City requested a study to determine what is necessary to help new plants thrive and which plant species were best suited to survive on the landfill slopes. Ultimately, it is foreseen that the site will be incorporated in to the Blaauwberg Conservation Area as a wildlife habitat. For the purposes of the experiment, a portion of the currently active landfill zone was capped with a clay layer, an impermeable geotextile membrane was also established and the area was divided into zones with different soil depths. The main area of interest of the experiment was whether or not increased soil depths would sustain a greater number of vegetation species. One of the major challenges to the rehabilitation of a barren area, especially in high wind zones, is the high levels of erosion that make it difficult for plants to establish themselves. Higher grass content was specified to mitigate against potential erosion as these plants are hardy and fast-growing. The species commonly found in the Vissershok area and which are endemic to a lowland thicket biome were selected. Initial results have confirmed expectations that grass and other hardy vegetation would establish first. Encouragingly, within a year some perennials had taken root and were tolerating the harsh conditions. Other recommendations for the eventual rehabilitation include: that only once the area is stable and the integrity of the clay capping layer and membrane have Photo: Embankment Before Revegetation been assured should long-term rehabilitation be undertaken; that seeding occurs during the right season for the plant species to ensure successful germination; the implementation of wind suppression measures, such as a windbreak, and the suppression of alien vegetation with the use of fire as a first measure to stimulate endemic fynbos. “The lessons that have been learned through this experience will go a long way to ensuring that the site can be returned to nature, first as a wildlife habitat and eventually, once open to the public, to expand our conservation efforts and to enable future generations to enjoy our natural heritage,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Utility Services, Alderman Ernest Sonnenberg.
Rotarians Laying Foundations in Mfuleni To mark World Habitat Day, celebrated internationally, members of the Rotary Club of Claremont mixed cement and laid bricks at a building site in Mfuleni. Learners from Rustenburg Girls High School’s Interact Club and Rotaract members joined Rotarians in a volunteer team to build a house with Habitat for Humanity South Africa. The Team Build Week was part of Habitat for Humanity’s campaign to advocate for informal settlement upgrading where the community is an active and equitable partner in the upgrading process. “This initiative focuses on providing decent shelter and building thriving communities which is in alignment with our values,” explains Ian Robertson, President of the Rotary Club of Claremont.
“Every South African deserves to live in dignity in a permanent home that is structurally safe and conducive to raising a family.”
The National Department of Tourism is funding the Tourism Blue Flag Project, which is a national employment creation programme that will employ 50 extra persons to work on the Blue Flag Beaches, in an effort to complement and enhance tourism efforts.
Malaysian Flying Foxes at Butterfly World In March 6 male Flying Foxes arrived at Butterfly World Tropical Garden in Paarl. Being creatures that live in tropical forests of South East Asia, Butterfly World is almost as good as home to them. Their long, pointed, fox-like ears and of course the wingspan that can reach 1,8m, gave them the name Flying Foxes. On arrival they were kept in quarantine until animal collection manager, Alana Witberg, deemed them healthy and fit for introduction to their new home in the main garden. They were let out of their individual containers and set free in the garden. After carefully scouting the area and, finding the moist, 30◦c jungle to their liking, they climbed up the side netting and settled, in their typically upside down position from the rafters. Visitors will see them hanging in the same area as they are group animals, often found in groups of thousands in their natural habitat. As time went by these shy animals ventured closer and closer to humans and today visitors are often treated to a fully grown flying fox coming to fetch a bite to eat a mere meter from the path. The planet’s largest bats eat fresh fruit and vegetable sosaties, twice a day. Flying Foxes can reach up to 30 years in the wild. Although the exact age of the flying foxes are unknown, a few of them are already very old and have started to lose their teeth. For this reason the staff makes fruit and veg smoothies to put alongside the sosaties, in order for the old men to also have their daily dose of vitamins which they need. During the heat of the day, the bats use their wings to fan themselves. Being tropical animals they do not hibernate like our native bats. In their natural habitat they will fly up to 50km a night for food. The conservation status of the species today is near-threatened. Their numbers are dwindling fast, as natural forests make space for other human activities and as they are captured to supply the ever growing exotic pet trade. Because Butterfly World strongly discourages the keeping of wild animals as pets, it has an educational department devoted to get a very simple message across: Appreciate - don’t keep!

REALTY
THE BEST RESIDENCY PROGRAMME IN EUROPE! 3 generations all get residency for life!
A growing number of South Africans are exploring the option of purchasing a property overseas to acquire permanent residency or a 2nd citizenship to leave a legacy for their family; but the choice of where to invest can be daunting.
5. Culture like RSA: With gorgeous outdoor walks, nature reserves, golf estates and open spaces – you will feel right at home. There are plenty of expats who have moved to Cyprus to make it their new home – the Cypriots are warm and friendly and don’t have any xenophobic attitudes or prejudices. 6. Very advantageous tax benefits: a. NO inheritance tax (death tax)! In South Africa, you pay 20% b. NO capital gains tax on any property purchased by 31 Dec 2016! In South Africa it is 16,4% c. Very low personal tax: the first €19,500 of your worldwide income (including pension income) is exempt from personal tax. d. Very low municipal rates: it is 75% cheaper than South Africa being calculated at between 0,1 and 0,2% of the property value.
7. English-speaking universities: On offer is a Medical School faculty (from Oxford University), a variety of post and undergrad degrees; and a host of colleges. You can secure your child’s future by educating them in Cyprus! Cyprus – a full member of the EU – currently has THE BEST permanent residency programme on offer where THREE generations of the same family all secure permanent residency FOR LIFE through the purchase of a single property! This means that the main applicant, the spouse, all dependent children up to the age of 25, PLUS both the parents & the parents-in-law each secure permanent residency permits FOR LIFE by buying one property. No other country in Europe offers this!
Cyprus represents an excellent Plan B investment destination and the property prices are affordable. The choice of where to buy is very personal and the type of property depends on your lifestyle requirements, budget and long term plans. With an impressive portfolio of over 330 completed projects, every style and location of property is available from seafront and hillside villas to beachfront apartments and townhouse complexes. We will find you your ideal home!
And their 2nd citizenship through investment programme is acknowledged as the best on offer because it is the quickest programme in Europe (passports are issued in 3 months); and dependent children up to the age of 28 also qualify! In Cyprus, not only is there no inheritance tax applicable, but the cost of living and the property ownership costs are a fraction of what we pay in South Africa. Being voted THE SAFEST country in the world with a population of under 5Million – investing in Cyprus is a good option. Cyprus is in the most enviable position in the EU in that the refugees from North Africa and Syria are not interested in landing on her shores because Cyprus is not on the migratory route to Europe. There are no work opportunities for the migrants; and no direct access to the wealthy Western European countries (they would have to catch a boat or fly to get there); so this is another reason why investing in Cyprus is a good option. There are a number of other reasons why Cyprus is so appealing: 1. No language barrier: Cyprus is an ex-British colony, so everyone speaks English. The road signs are in English, your telephone accounts and municipality rates accounts are in English; and you feel right at home. 2. Strong economy: Cyprus’ economy is booming with increased foreign investment pouring into the country – this year their growth is predicted to be 2,8% (RSA has zero growth!).
LOGO
They are on a massive infrastructural drive building new marinas, a casino and new golf courses. And Paphos (the province on the West of the island similar to the Western Cape) is The Capital of Culture for 2017. They are expecting more than 1,6Million additional tourists coming to Paphos alone next year. Cyprus is an appealing investment destination because of the solid fiscal policies, offering tangible benefits to investors and having the perfect location being where East meets West. 3. Politically stable: Cyprus is a democratically elected government and has a president with a zero tolerance on bribery and corruption. 4. Incredible lifestyle: You have every modern convenience coupled with incredible outdoor living, a plethora of outdoor activities and loads to do. Being on the cusp of The Med means travelling across to Europe and the UK quick and cheap.
Be clear on the reason why you want a Plan B in Europe. You will approach your investment decision with a different mind-set if you are looking to acquire residency/ citizenship, are wanting to relocate and create a legacy for the children and grand children versus investing in a property to rent out to earn a subsidiary income. Buying a home overseas is not only a major financial and emotional commitment, but a decision that is made easier when you get advice from professionals. It is recommended that you always check exactly what you are buying before signing any contracts. The cost of a property inspection trip to personally view the property opportunities and do the groundwork will save you thousands in the long run. Cypriot Realty is a pioneer in actively and consistently promoting the property opportunities primarily in Cyprus. They have succesfull been doing this from their Cape Town and Sandton offices since 2008. As a result, the company is recognised and respected as Southern Africa’s authoritative investment specialists for promoting Cyprus as an ideal desitination for acquiring permanent residency/citizenship as well as property invest-ment & immigration/retirement.

Mobility Indaba Leaves A Legacy of Opportunity October 2016 kicked off with Transport Month at the Mobility Indaba #cocreate2MOVE, a five-day event that commenced with a two-day conference followed by a weekend of activities for the whole family at Kenilworth Racecourse. The event was hosted by the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Cape Town in collaboration with the City of Cape Town, Transport for Cape Town, WESGRO and Accelerate Cape Town. According to the 2016 TomTom Traffic Index Report Cape Town is rated as the most congested city in South Africa. The aim of the event was to rethink the way people move in the City of Cape Town and co-creating a way forward that focuses on mobility as a key driver of inclusive economic growth, sustainable development and societal transformation. The event focused on different modalities of transport and the inter-modality perspective including cycling and other active forms of NonMotorized Transport (NMT). The Mobility Indaba weekend activities started with the opening of the Mobility Hack by Minister of Economic Opportunities, Alan Winde stating, “We need to keep people at the centre of our planning; mobility is about how people move and that’s where our focus should be. Congestion is a constraint to economic growth, and it is a huge cost to our emotional well-being.” “We see this with commuters faced with train delays and motorists stuck in gridlocked traffic.”
Ease Congestion In The City With uGoMyWay Cape Town has the worst congested roads in South Africa and 47th worse in the world according to the TomTom Traffic Index 2015. And yet, 79% of vehicles on our roads only have one person in them.
uGoMyWay aims to ease congestion in the city by connecting drivers and passengers to share their everyday journeys.
Using your Smartphone, uGoMyWay allows users to create routine journeys like home-to-work or home-to-school and to share them. Matches are then ranked to maximise the shared journey. An in-App chat facility allows users to establish a dialogue before any personal details are shared. Once this has taken place, you decide who is driving and what the shared costs are. A trip log maintains a record of actual trips taken which in turn allows shared costs to be tracked. A one-touch payment facility allows shared costs to be settled without reverting to cash or exchanging banking details. Organisations may then choose to reward those who carpool with payments in lieu of the parking space they have freed up or perhaps a subsidised Taxi voucher scheme to cater for unforeseen circumstances. Users can also request to be a part of a ring-fenced community which includes only members from your workplace. Additional safety features include; verification by one time password sent to a RICA cell phone along with user profiles and star rating. A leaderboard facility puts visibility on carpool activity at the Organisation level, measuring road trips saved and the resulting reduction in CO2 emissions. Governments and transport authorities may then reward Organisations who have embraced carpooling. The app can be downloaded free on the Google Play for Android users, with iPhone launching in the App Store at the end of October.
“Part of the solution is building trust in the system, in that you trust your child will arrive safely at school if they walk, or you’ll arrive safely at work if you decide to cycle. The Mobility Indaba is exploring smart solutions to the way we move.” The Mobility Hack will use the outcomes of the conference as a starting point to use design thinking to create solutions to challenges around mobility. “I believe there are barriers to cycling, but I also believe there are a community of cyclists and future cyclists who can work together to create our own solutions to these barriers, and by coming together improve our own experience of the city” says Jen Katchmark, Founder of The Cycling Collective. Kenilworth Racecourse also welcomed the opening of the Pedal Power Association (PPA) Pump Track offering kids of all ages, a traffic-free environment to have fun and improve their cycling skills. The racecourse is centrally located and within easy reach of many schools and communities and will be open and free to use, 7 days a week. Furthermore, the Pedal Power Association (PPA) and Bicycling Empowerment Network (BEN) also offered a Safety Cycling School Programme where kids received their cycling diplomas. In the run up to the Mobility Indaba Councillor Herron of the City of Cape Town issued a statement that the city intend to release a draft cycling strategy for public comment in die coming months with the purpose to grow their modal share of utility cycling.
Bike2Work Challenge To City Commuters Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities, has encouraged residents who live within 10km of their workplace to get out of their cars, and onto a bike. Minister Winde marked the start of Bike2Work week by cycling to work during peak hour morning traffic. He was joined by KFM’s Liezel van der Westhuizen. Riders from across the city tweeted their support for the initiative, with many joining in by cycling to work from their homes. “It was amazing to ride. We were passing all the cars, taking in the fresh air and the fantastic view of our mountain. We really need to decrease congestion on our roads, and I would like to appeal, especially to those living within 10km of their workplaces, to cycle to work instead of taking the car. It is healthier, often quicker, and less stressful.”
“October is Transport Month, and we’ve dedicated this month to finding smart solutions to improve mobility around our region. Challenges around mobility place financial and emotional strain on residents, and we need to work together to improve this situation.” Follow all the activity on Twitter and Facebook at the #Bike2WorkCPT hashtag
N2 Roadworks Project Progressing Well Phase 1 of the work on the third lane is nearing completion, and the piling and earthworks to prepare for the future construction of a bridge and interchange from Eisleben Rd onto the N2 is complete. Current work in progress includes the rehabilitation of the existing left and middle lanes, which includes the recycling of all concrete road materials taken from the old road structure. These road materials will be broken up, taken off site for crushing to a specified grade, and brought back for reuse in the foundations of the rehabilitated roadway as well as on the new on- and off-ramps. The Department of Transport and Public Works is making good progress with a R186 million project to rehabilitate a 7 km portion of the N2 between Borcherds Quarry Rd and the R300, and to add a third lane in both directions. This project began in January 2016, and is expected to have been completed in mid-2017. So far, the project is 40% complete.
About 82 000 vehicles travel on the affected stretch of road every day. The upgrade will improve the carrying capacity of the road, especially for buses and taxis during peak periods. The ride quality of the road will be improved and better street lighting will be installed. Every attempt will be made to facilitate the flow of traffic and minimise delays. Contract expenditure to date is R8 million for targeted enterprises. A total of 7 356 person-days of work have been created so far for 74 men and 12 women from the City of Cape Town municipal area.

Marriott International Introduces Three New Brands to CPT The world’s leading hotel company, Marriott International, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAR), announced plans for the construction of three new hotel properties in Cape Town, in partnership with the Amdec Group. These will be three new hotels in the city: one under the company’s signature brand, Marriott Hotels®, which will be the first Marriott Hotel in Cape Town; the second under the upscale extended stay brand, Residence Inn by Marriott®, the first for South Africa; and the third the upper-moderate tier lifestyle brand, AC Hotels by Marriott®, which is the first hotel under this brand for the Middle East & Africa (MEA) region.
Once the hotels are completed, over 700 new hospitality jobs will be created - 470 in the three new Cape Town hotels and 320 in Johannesburg. Cape Town’s importance in the world tourist market has been confirmed in recent years with the ever-increasing visitor numbers to the city. The addition of further accommodation to meet the growing demand will place the city in an even stronger position as a top global destination.
These three planned developments will add over 500 rooms to Cape Town’s hotel accommodation offering. Bringing 189 additional rooms to Cape Town, the AC Hotel Cape Town waterfront will be located at The Yacht Club in the Roggebaai precinct, while Harbour Arch will be the site of the 200-room Cape Town Marriott Hotel Foreshore and the 150-room Residence Inn by Marriott Cape Town Foreshore. This announcement is an extension of Marriott’s existing partnership with the Amdec Group, initiated in 2015 with the announcement of the development of the first two Marriott branded hotels in South Africa, situated in the popular upmarket Melrose Arch Precinct in Johannesburg, and are scheduled to open in 2018. Amdec’s total investment in these Cape Town and Johannesburg developments amounts to over R3 billion between the two cities which will have positive economic spinoffs and a massive impact on job creation. Marriott International’s growth plans for the continent are impressive: by 2025 the company aims to expand its current presence in Africa to 27 countries, with over 200 hotels and around 37,000 rooms. It is anticipated that, during the construction phase, approximately 8 000 construction related jobs will be created.
Home Owner Winner of a Ferrari worth R 4 million in Highly Anticipated Draw A significant day in the history of Val de Vie – top luxury residential estate in South Africa – took place 14 October 2016 when a Polo Village home owner, Magnus Heystek, was awarded a Ferrari California 30 Convertible worth R 4 million by the estate. The announcement was made at a glamorous event held in the estate’s ballroom, where the first-of-its-kind draw took place. Purchasers of Val de Vie’s Polo Village luxury apartments were automatically entered into the draw, which was audited by PwC South Africa. Due to the nature of the draw, entrants stood a 1 in 56 chance of winning the slick sports vehicle. “It was a really exciting moment waiting for the winner’s name to be read out. On behalf of Val de Vie, I’d like to congratulate Mr Heystek! We wish him many safe and enjoyable kilometres in this show-stopping car,” comments Ryk Neethling, Marketing Director and Shareholder at Val de Vie Estate.
Photo: Mark de Villiers who represented the winner & accepted the Ferrari on his behalf.
“What a feeling! I am absolutely thrilled to be named the winner of the Ferrari! I’d like to thank Val de Vie and Ferrari for this amazing opportunity and for the privilege of receiving this stunning vehicle. I can’t wait to take it out on the road,” says Heystek winner of the Ferrari and Polo Village home owner. Val de Vie’s Polo Village – designed by Stefan Antoni – was launched in 2014 in celebration of the finer things in life.
While most homes on Val de Vie are primary residences, the lock-upand-go Polo Village apartments cater perfectly to the jet-setters of the world – to those who live abroad or in other parts of South Africa and have a love for the Cape Winelands, for polo and the estate’s lifestyle. Sale prices started at R 1.6 million and the value of the units has already increased significantly. The decision to give this particular car away stemmed from the fact that Ferrari and Val de Vie are both internationally recognised as leading products in their respective categories and are equally associated with excellence, elegance and luxury. The Polo Village has in fact become synonymous with sophistication. Owing to Val de Vie’s ideal location, just 35 minutes from Cape Town and Cape Town International Airport, it offers its residents the best of both worlds – proximity to the city and nearness to nature in the Winelands. The estate’s ample size affords its residents space and privacy and a wealth of outdoor amenities from polo fields and the Pearl Valley Golf Course to 42 km of trails, amongst others. “We’re an estate that offers great diversity and I can confidently say that we provide an incomparable lifestyle to our residents, whether they are travellers that frequently visit the estate, families, couples, expats or investors.” “This giveaway is just one example of how we have implemented our core value of remaining ground-breaking in all aspects: our vision, our offering, building practices, conservation efforts, security and lifestyle. While we love the relaxed atmosphere at Val de Vie, we also know how to enjoy the thrilling side of life, and I’m sure that Mr Heystek will agree,” Neethling concludes. Val de Vie has earned a host of local and international awards – the latest of which includes being named South Africa’s top estate by New World Wealth and receiving the award for the Best Single Unit Residential Development in Africa (The Valentia Manor House) at the 2016 International Property Awards.

Presented by Discovery Health, Gunther von Hagens’ BODY WORLDS Vital exhibition is the perfect tool to raise awareness for both the fragility as well as resilience of the human body. For sports and fitness fans, plastinates in athletic sports poses illustrate the use of muscle systems while practicing sport or exercising. These poses are chosen to highlight specific anatomical features and allow the visitor to better understand the interaction between bones, muscles, tendons and relate it to his or her own body.
Keep hunger at bay with a range of delectable delights available from the Franschhoek restaurants showcasing their menus during the festival.
The plastinated bodies on display have all been willed by donors for Plastination. This unique conservation process, invented by trail-blazing anatomist Dr. Gunther von Hagens has rendered the specimens dry and odourless. Over 16.000 people are currently registered in the body donation program administered by the Institute for Plastination in Heidelberg, Germany.

Last Lion Trophy for an #Untamed rider The Last Lion Trophy - a stunning bronze artwork by internationally renowned sculptor Dylan Lewis will become part of the Untamed African MTB race story as unveiled during the launch of the Absa Cape Epic Route 2017 in Cape Town recently. The weighty statue stands about 30cm tall and 50cm long and depicts a lion lying on a rock and looking out across the plains.
The Last Lion Trophy will go to the last cyclist who has finished every edition of the Absa Cape Epic. As things stand there are four who have managed to finish each of the 13 editions so far. The Fabulous Four are: Craig Beech (Somerset West), John Gale (Cape Town), Mike Nixon (Cape Town) and Hannele Steyn from (Knysna) - they will all be on the start line in 2017. Eventually, as one or another drops out or fails to finish, there will be one person left who has finished each event: The Last Lion. That person will get the Last Lion Trophy, a much sought after artwork by a man regarded by London’s Portland gallery as ‘one of the world’s most important contemporary sculptors of animals’. Lewis has exhibited around the world to critical acclaim and, appropriately, one of his installations was called Untamed. Lewis chose this particular work for the Last Lion award because of its “sense of solitariness … which seemed appropriate”. It was created in clay and then converted into bronze using a process known as “lost wax casting”. Lewis confesses to be more of a surfer than a mountain biker, but says he is well aware of the Absa Cape Epic and its challenges. Last year Absa Cape Epic CEO Lynn Naudé announced the Last Lions concept: “We decided to recognise these athletes in a special way.” “They have shown amazing committed and drive and are obviously very talented athletes. It is quite something to just get to the start of the Absa Cape Epic, but to finish is truly amazing.”

European young guns headed to Sun City for Race to Dubai Rising star Tyrrell Hatton and a strong cast of young European Tour winners are expected to be headed to Sun City for the 2016 Nedbank Golf Challenge, hosted by Gary Player, from 10 -13 November. Hatton’s victory in the recent Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland lifted him into fourth place on the current Race to Dubai standings as he continues to chase his best season as a professional. He leads a group of players who have made big moves up the Race to Dubai rankings and will be challenging for a place inside the top 10 at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship and a share of the $5 million bonus pool, and with the Nedbank Golf Challenge playing a key role as the penultimate tournament on the Final Series.
Double US Open champion Retief Goosen will also return to a tournament he won in 2004, having been granted a special invitation to play this year. South Africa’s Richard Sterne played his way into the Sun City field with a share of second place in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, climbing to 35th place on the rankings. Swedish star Alex Noren is also expected to tee it up at the Gary Player Country Club this November. Noren is a two-time winner on the European Tour this season in the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open and the Omega European Masters have placed him to ninth on the Race to Dubai. English stars Andrew Johnston and Ross Fisher will also be looking to Sun City to boost their chances of a place within the top 10, while Johnston, a maiden winner on the European Tour this season with his victory in the Real Club Valderrama Open de España, is currently 19th on the Race to Dubai. Fisher, who shared second place in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, is currently in 17th place on the Race to Dubai rankings. Joost Luiten, currently 12th on the standings, is also looking to break into the top 10 over the next few weeks leading up to the final, as is European Ryder Cup star Thomas Pieters who currently sits in 15th place on the rankings. England’s Tommy Fleetwood is also pushing hard for a return to Sun City, having played his way into the top 60 on the Race to Dubai at number 56 following four top 15 finishes in his last four tournaments. Tour de France Official Event to hit SA roads in 2017 Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), the organizer of Le Tour de France, and Buyu Sport & Entertainment, the newly-formed event-ownership division of Octagon South Africa, announce an exclusive strategic partnership to bring Le Tour de France Official Events to South Africa. L’Etape South Africa by Le Tour de France, will come to the country in May 2017 and is a premier amateur road cycling event, held under the banner of the world’s most iconic cycling race, Le Tour de France. L’Etape du Tour (French for ‘a stage of the tour’) was established in 1993 by ASO (Amaury Sport Organisation) to allow cyclists to experience a stage of Le Tour de France first-hand. ASO has since extended the L’Etape concept internationally bringing the unique Tour de France experience to Australia, Brazil, China, Costa Rica, Mexico, South Korea, Taiwan and United Kingdom and from May 2017, South Africa. Sports and cycling fans will be immersed in the great atmosphere of Le Tour de France as L’Etape will be operated under professional race conditions and will replicate a stage of Le Tour de France. Up to 5,000 amateur cyclists will be invited to participate in the race with riders competing for the legendary Tour de France yellow, green, polka dot and white jerseys. Amaury Sport Organisation General Manager Yann Le Moënner declared: "It seems like South African cycling is breaking away from the peloton these days: 2015 already was a historical year for Le Tour de France as it welcomed its first African team on board in MTN-Qhubeka, which has since been renamed “Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka”.

"With Tour de France 2013, 2015 and 2016 winner Chris Froome having spent years and been introduced to cycling in South Africa as well as numerous teams traveling to South Africa for their winter training and a major sponsor in Dimension Data partnering with Le Tour de France since 2015, the cycling planet has recognized South Africa as a land of cycling. For the first time in history, South African cycling enthusiasts will be offered the excitement of Le Tour de France; we are proud and happy of this new grand premiere!" Further information on L’Etape South Africa 2017, including entry details and the race route will be announced in November.
