LIFEGUARDS READY FOR HOLIDAY SEASON

TRAVEL & TOURISM Page 6
Photo: Summer Holiday at Camps Bay Beach, Cape Town
Safety will be the main priority at the City of Cape Town’s beaches this summer. The City’s Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department has employed permanent and seasonal lifeguards in order to improve beach safety over the summer holiday season. The 12 permanent lifeguards and over 100 seasonal lifeguards will be deployed at various beaches over weekends. From 1 December 2016 lifeguards will be on these beaches daily from 10:00 until 18:00. An essential requirement for appointment as a beach lifeguard is possession of a valid Lifeguard Award, as well as experience in surf lifesaving. The aim of the City’s lifeguarding programme is to provide a lifesaving standard of the highest quality, and to provide lifeguards with better career path opportunities.
R400m Mixed-Use Retail Centre Opens In Somerset West
The developers behind Somerset West’s acclaimed Waterstone Village are celebrating the opening of their anticipated destination centre, a R400-million mixed-use retail and convenience development called The Sanctuary. Anchored on the corner of the R44 and De Beers Avenue, the three-storey, R400-million building offers 8,000m² of retail space on the ground floor, with a further 8,000m² of optic fibre-connected office space and a Virgin Active gym.
LIFESTYLE Page 12 & 13
Designed by SVA International Cape Town, The Sanctuary boasts the first formalised restaurant node for Somerset West, bringing with it popular Gauteng steakhouse franchise, Turn ‘n Tender – a first for the Western Cape. Other eateries include the popular Casa Bella and the new look Cape Town Fish Market, Crème De Levain artisan bakery and patisserie, and Simply Greek (opening in January 2017). The trendy Java and Craft restaurants will be opening before the end of the year as well. Adding to the centre’s appeal, say developers, is its scenic setting. Restaurants spill onto an outdoor deck which overlooks a rehabilitated water body.

Film Industry On The Rise! Western Cape MEC for Economic Opportunities, Alan Winde, City of Cape Town Executive Mayor, Patricia de Lille, and a Wesgro delegation recently met with senior executives in Hollywood at Universal studios, Warner Bros and Walt Disney studios.
REALTY Page 9
The visits were aimed at furthering opportunities for growth in the film sector through the attraction of additional film and television series by major studios, and to understand first-hand what would be required to achieve this. The purpose of these meetings were also to try and convince film studios to increase their investment in the city. Such investment would increase jobs, both directly in the industry and indirectly in the service industry. Cape Town is able to offer highly skilled crews at competitive rates. The industry has enjoyed its projects shot at Cape Town studios and the need for capacity has been reaffirmed, validating the City's strategy to try and increase the spaces and facilities for more filming to take place. Cape Town’s popularity as a filming destination is constantly growing as film studios are always booked.

“While I am confident that the lifeguards employed to ensure the safety of beach-goers are competent and well qualified, beach safety is a shared responsibility between our beach safety staff and our beach-goers. Many drownings are linked to the consumption of alcohol before swimming or people swimming in dangerous areas not designated by lifeguards, so I appeal to residents to exercise caution.” “While the City does provide lifeguards and law enforcement personnel, this service cannot take the place of a parent or guardian’s supervision of children.” “On peak days, the high number of people visiting our beaches and pools makes it very difficult for lifeguards to keep a watchful eye on all swimmers all of the time.” “The lifeguards are under constant pressure to keep a keen eye out for anyone in distress.” “Parents need to be on high alert when their children are playing in or near the ocean, a river or a pool and are urged
to be vigilant,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services, Councillor Anda Ntsodo. The lifeguard service will be boosted by accredited members of lifesaving clubs and teams will work closely with National Sea Rescue Institute volunteers. Beachgoers are encouraged to keep the following key safety tips in mind: Only swim at beaches that have lifeguards on duty; Swim between the red and yellow flags, they indicate safe, rip current-free, supervised swimming areas (An area outside of these flags could have dangerous rip currents; Never swim alone; Always inform friends or family members when you are going swimming; Do not swim when there are marine animals such as whales, dolphins and seals in the area or when a marine animal carcass has washed up onto the beach. If you find yourself in difficulty, turn on your back and float, raise your arm and wave to attract the lifeguard’s attention, and do not panic, as this will make you tired. If you see someone in difficulty in the water, alert the lifeguards or find trained help. Do not enter the water and attempt a rescue. Throw something that floats to the person or call a surfer who can take floatation to the person. Call emergency services on 112 or 021 480 7700 from a cellphone if you require assistance.

Speaking of the uniqueness of the development, Abacus managing director Gavin Blows said a fibre optic backbone meant high-speed connectivity for stores and office tenants alike, with 100 mbits speed and 250MB of free Wi-Fi data available to shoppers daily and is a continuation of the national partnership with Vodacom which has resulted in cost effective connectivity not only for office and retail tenants but also for surrounding developments. Vodacom has invested in a high speed “meet me room” which will act as hub for fibre connectivity in the Strand and Somerset West.

Table Mountain National Park Gears Up For Fire Season Several agencies including South African National Parks (SANParks), Working on Fire (WoF) Department of Environmental Affairs Expanded Public Works Programme, the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, Cape Nature, Provincial Disaster Risk Management and Cape Peninsula Fire Protection Association will once again come together this summer as the 2016-17 fire season subsequently kicks off. SANParks would thus like to advise that the public can be assured that TMNP Fire in conjunction with these fighting teams will play a joint role during this fire season. The months of September and October 2016 have been particularly dry, coupled with rainfall that was far below the average for both of these months. Table Mountain National Park’s (TMNP) preparation for the 2016/17 fire season has been tested by a fire just above De Waal Drive whereby the park dispatched both the TMNP Newlands and Kloofnek crews to the scene of the fire. The fire has subsequently been contained with TMNP crews as well as WoF (Working on Fire) crews assisting with the mopping up and ensuring that the area remains safe. It is important to note that as soon as a fire is reported all resources are dispatched from key stand-by points at the City Bowel, Kloofnek and Newlands dispatches. Teams are trained and on stand-by based at Silvermine and Newlands in the event of fire outbreaks. These teams are comprised of TMNP Fire staff accompanied by volunteers of the Wildfire Services and the City Fire and Rescue Services. TMNP also makes use of the Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS) to assist the Parks contract as well as WoF fire fighters with regards to the extinguishing of wildfires, this unit forms an integral part of the TMNP fire-fighting capacity.
In addition to acclaim for several malls in its portfolio, Abacus recently scooped the top honours for its mixed-use retail development in Johannesburg, Dainfern Square, at the SA Council of Shopping Centres’ (SACSC) annual Retail Design and Development Awards. Abacus Chairman, Jaco Odendaal said, “There is an increasing demand for boutique convenience shopping centres servicing high income suburbs, The Sanctuary combines a scenic setting with high-speed connectivity and high-end retail. It’s also the first restaurant node for Somerset West, which is a great drawcard.”
TMNP fire crews are assisted by crews from (WoF) programme as well as three medium sized helicopters which are stationed at the SANParks Fire Base at Newlands. The TMNP crews are on standby 24/7 and resources dispatched to wildfires will depend on the Fire Danger Index for that specific day as well as the locality of the fire in relation to “high risk” areas in the Park.
Odendaal said the development also caters to the high demand for premium office space in area and the growth in the residential market. “Our AAA-grade office space features break-away areas for office staff including Zen gardens,” adding the centre was conveniently located, plus the Virgin Active gym provides easy access to a healthy lifestyle. “Bringing the popular Turn ‘n Tender steakhouse franchise to The Sanctuary, which is their first offering in the Western Cape, is supported by our research indicating an under-supply of quality dining areas in the Somerset West and Strand areas,” he said. Designed to be sensitive to the water body which borders the centre, the wooden decks and retractable shopfronts will also allow for restaurants to trade internally or externally, depending on the weather. The water body, which serves as a storm water retention facility, has been rehabilitated, with the developers having removed tons of polluted soil and implemented a water and landscaping maintenance programme to ensure the natural environment can propagate and provide a sanctuary for the birdlife of the area. A path has been built around the water body so as to allow bird watchers access to all sides and includes a few rest areas and benches. Abacus Asset Management leasing director Eradus van Antwerpen said the centre would primarily serve Somerset West, Strand and Gordon’s Bay residents. It was the first restaurant hub for Somerset West, he said, adding that the centre would boast extended trading hours and a safe trading environment along a high traffic node. A key feature for business tenants at the centre was the high-speed connectivity, he added.
Fire Index signage is displayed daily at the entrance of the Newlands Forest and on the TMNP social media pages for the public’s information. Due to adverse and unpredictable weather conditions TMNP and all fire agencies requests that the public exercises extreme caution during the upcoming fire season, to only braai in designated braai areas, not make any illegal fires and to discard of cigarette butts safely. The general public are requested to immediately report all fires within TMNP on 0861 106 417 or the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services on 021 480 7700 and 107 (from a landline). If you suspect a fire outbreak has occurred due to arson, report it by tweeting us and the Volunteer Wildfire Services @VWSfire immediately.

FACET Foundation Expands Fleet of Mobile Graff Learning Centres Graff Diamonds’ charitable initiative, For Africa’s Children Every Time (FACET), is delighted to announce the expansion of the Graff Mobile Learning Centre fleet in the heart of South Africa’s Cape winelands. In partnership with the Pebbles Project, three additional mobile units will be joining the mobile library and computer lab which have been in operation since September 2014. Founder and director of the Pebbles Project, Sophia Warner, explains, “The three new Mobile Learning Centres are literally 'opportunities on wheels'”.
The centres provide much needed after-school support for scholars between the ages of 6 to 18 years whom attend local public schools throughout the Cape Winelands region from Stellenbosch Valley, home to Delaire Graff Estate, to Citrusdal in the Cederberg Mountains.
The FACET Mobile Learning Centres have grown to 2 computer labs, 2 travelling libraries and a multi-purpose vehicle for more remote areas. Currently, the units assist 522 students ensuring they attain the best quality educational care and mentorship. Through a range of exciting strategies and proactive development initiatives, learners improve basic mathematics, literacy and computer related skills. Experienced educational specialists have been brought on board to safeguard the future of the children in the region. The creation of a fertile learning environment in which each individual learner may succeed and grow has been central to the project. Using tested methods of assessment, each learner’s accomplishments are continuously evaluated and their path to academic achievement is designed and adjusted to ensure their personal success. Facility staff members have monthly training sessions on the different programmes resulting in an ever evolving dynamic support structure. Fitted with cutting-edge, first-world technology and featuring an abundant collection of multi-lingual literature otherwise unattainable in these regions, the centres are a source of great encouragement for the individuals in the areas they reach. Cultivating a passion for learning and instilling a love of books from a young age is fostering an appetite for education which carries through the school years and beyond. In their partnership thus far, the Pebbles Project has received financial support from the FACET Foundation to the amount of R20 million.
Historic Houw Hoek Hotel Sold for R42 million The historic Houw Hoek Hotel has recently changed hands, in a sale by Greeff Christie’s International Real Estate. New owners, Robert Haarburger and Drew Danford acquired the seven-hectare property for R42 million. “Houw Hoek fits into the existing portfolio which includes Arniston Spa Hotel and Arniston Seaside Cottages,” says Robert Haarburger. “We’ve changed the name back to “Houw Hoek Hotel” in line with its original title – it was named Houw Hoek Inn some 30 years ago,” he adds. Houw Hoek Hotel bears the distinction of oldest Liquor License in South Africa, and features in the memory banks of countless Capetonians.
“While Houw Hoek Inn has been in continuous operation for longer than any other hotel in South Africa, it is a thoroughly modern, three-star facility, with substantial infrastructure, staff and goodwill. I knew that a shrewd investor would have no difficulty recognising the potential of this jewel,” says Greeff Properties, CEO Mike Greeff.
Located on the site of a tollgate established in the Dutch East India era, and first built in 1779, Houw Hoek Hotel has retained much of the original architecture, and the ground floor bears testimony to the grandeur of a previous age. The upper storey was added in 1860. Since then there have been numerous additions and renovations, however the structures are still characterised by old-world grace and charm, and today Houw Hoek Hotel offers guests an elegant combination of history and natural beauty, located as it is in the heart of the Kogelberg (Biosphere) Reserve.

The hotel is in excellent condition and currently comprises 53 rooms, conferencing facilities, an a la carte Restaurant and the salubrious ‘Hitching Post’ pub. Other amenities include a squash court, two swimming pools, a tennis court, volleyball court, putt-putt course, three boreholes and a generator with more than adequate spare capacity. “Zoned as a resort and with loads of vacant property, there is significant potential to increase the scale and profitability of the business going forward,” says Greeff, adding that Houw Hoek Inn currently hosts more than 100 weddings and conferences a year. Haarburger says he plans to add rooms and suites as well as a Ginkgo Spa. “The hotel will not lose any of its historic charm or popular appeal though, as we are planning to retain the 3-star status along with all the traditional much-loved existing attractions for which the establishment is best known, such as the scone tea and the legendary Saturday night dinner dance and Sunday Carvery,” adds Robert Haarburger.

MASKAM WATER MANUFACTURES FIRST FUSION WASTE TREATMENT PLANT IN SA Maskam Water, a Western Cape based company assembled the first Clarus Fusion Waste Water Treatment plant, imported from the United States of America (USA) on South African soil in May this year.
The partnership between the Western Cape company and Kentucky-based business, Zoeller, is just one of many examples of how South African and U.S. companies are working together to innovate and grow their business.
After years of negotiating, planning and strategizing to solve sanitations problems, Maskam Water now offers customers turn-key water solutions, to resolve tomorrow’s water shortages today. The word ‘Maskam” means, “Give me Water”, a Koi San expression identifying the highest tip of the Matzikama Mountains in Namaqualand.
In his speech, Minster Winde emphasized the importance of South African partners working together creating more local jobs in the Western Cape. He also mentioned that Moody’s published a report stating that South Africa, but particularly the Western Cape, has the fastest growing Green Economy in the world. Sixty percent of the companies are based in the Western Cape with 70 percent in the manufacturing industry.
Background It all started in 2009 when one of Gerhard Cronje’s irrigation customers asked him to obtain an on-site sewage treatment plant. In the same year, the US commercial service contacted Gerhard to import and distribute Zoeller pumps from the USA. What started out as a customer looking for a sewage treatment plant, and the US commercial service looking for a South African distributor for Zoeller Pump Company, was the beginning of a new challenge for Gerhard Cronje, and Maskam Water was founded in 2010. After the first Clarus Fusion Treatment Plant was imported and installed in Franschhoek, Gerhard realized the potential of the system and in 2011 Maskam Water was appointed sole distributor for Zoeller and ever since been the sole importer for all five divisions to Sub-Sahara Africa. Maskam Water have sold more than 120 Clarus Fusions Treatment Plants in 8 countries and Zoeller pumps were sold in even more countries on the African Continent. Since then Maskam Water set up a factory in Brackenfell to manufacture these Clarus Fusion Treatment plants, producing the first local manufactured Clarus Fusion Waste Water Treatment plant outside the USA in South Africa.
“I think the water issue is really important to The Western Cape and the Country. When considering the last 3 years of drought, the sustainability of water to our towns is becoming more and more of a problem. We need to be recycling and re-using as much water as possible, as well as recycle the grey and black water out of the system for re-use,” Minister Winde added. The Greenest way of treating waste water In the present climate water treatment has become a great concern, therefore, the Fusion treatment plant in itself, based its development on world class technology and is by far the greenest way of treating waste water. Power consumption starts from as little as 60 watts (1 - 20 people) to 340 watts (per 100 people). It is the absolute answer to waste water treatment - low energy, low maintenance, small footprint, underground, easily be incorporated in the architecture of the building or even be installed in the garden. It can treat waste water for re-use from as little as R1.88 per kl. Through the implementation of the Clarus Fusion Treatment Plant, and seen from a health perspective, the water is healthier, and from an environment point of view there is no further pollution of water associated with chemicals. Therefore, treated water can now safely be used in the garden and no water is wasted. A further advantage of the Clarus Fusion Treatment Plant is that it is able to reduce pollution by offering the solution to extend the availability of water up to three times its normal usage. This is achieved by directing purified water into the building, treating the waste water from the building, and re-using the same water on the washbay, before treating it the third time for irrigation purposes.
Photo L-R: Consul General Teddy Taylor (US Consulate Cape Town), Minister Alan Winde (Provincial Minister of Economic Opportunities), Gerhard Cronje (CEO of Maskam Water), Billy Walker (Zoeller International Accounts Manager), Dr Kraai van Niekerk and Conrad Sidego
Maskam has been working together with the Western Cape Government and Green Cape for many years to provide dignified sanitation to all communities, regardless of income or status. With this technology, they can facilitate from a prestige development to informal settlements and rural communities where treated water can be re-used to the benefit of the community.
Launch of the Clarus Fusion Waste Treatment Plant The official launch of the Clarus Fusion took place at Maskam Water in Brackenfell on 24 October 2016 with the U.S. Consulate General in Cape Town, Teddy Taylor and Alan Winde, Provincial Minister of Ecconomic Opportunities as honoured guests. Billy Walker represented Zoeller International, while Dr Kraai Van Niekerk (former minister of Agriculture) and Conrad Sidego (former mayor of Stellenbosch Municipality), were amongst distinguished guests celebrating the opening of the new plant. “The manufacturing of the Clarus Fusion Treatment Plant in South Africa has been at the expense of hard work, dedication and two countries joining expertise to solve problems and offer opportunities to communities, companies and government. Maskam Water and Zoeller entered into a joint venture to manufacture the Clarus Fusion in South Africa, thereby ushering in a wide range of benefits, reduced lead time and cost savings. All this played a significant role in deciding to manufacture these Fusion Treatment Plants on South-African soil,” says Gerhard Cronje, founder of Maskam Water. “I am honoured and very excited to be a part of this historic manufacturing joint venture (JV) between Zoeller Inc. and Maskam Water. My commercial section and I have had the privilege of working with both of these companies previously.”

“I am aware of the great strides that they have made together and wish them continued success in the years to come,” says US Consulate General, Teddy Taylor.

Fusion works equally well in urban and non-urban applications, and treated water can be used for irrigation or other non-potable applications, thus saving water. With the current drought in the country this technology offers life-saving alternatives. Recently Nedbank has agreed to offer financing on the Clarus Fusions Treatment Plant, thus making it more affordable for everyone in the country. You can now change your septic tank or conservancy tank over to a treatment plant without it costing you an arm and a leg and at the same time stop the pollution of our natural resources. 5 YEARS ANNIVERSARY COMPETITION #TABLEMOUNTAINN7W In celebration of Table Mountain being named a New7Wonder of Nature (N7W) on 11/11/2011 Table Mountain Cableway is calling on the public to join in the 5th anniversary celebrations by participating in its photography competition. The Cableway has launched a photography competition across Twitter, Facebook and Instagram with prizes for the best photographs taken at one of the seven giant yellow N7W picture frames installed across the city. The competition will run until 11 December. Anyone can enter by visiting one of the frames located at Signal Hill, the V&A Waterfront, Eden on the Bay (Blouberg), Cape Town Station, Harrington Square, Lookout Hill in Khayelitsha or the Silo District in the Waterfont, taking a compelling picture and posting it to their Twitter, Instagram or Facebook accounts using #TableMountainN7W. “Getting a photograph with one’s friends or family at a New7Wonder frame has become a must-do activity for both locals and visitors to Cape Town,” said Cableway Marketing Manager Collette van Aswegen. “The N7W Frames take people to places they otherwise may not have been and provides them with a variety of perspectives of the mountain. They create a Table Mountain views route, an attraction in its own right.” In 2011 Table Mountain joined a hot list of the world’s top natural attractions alongside Jeju Island (South Korea), Puerto Princesa Underground River (Philippines), Ha Long Bay (Vietnam), the Amazon rainforest and river (South America), Iguazu Falls (Argentina and Brazil) and Komodo Island (Indonesia). “The increase in South African (especially Capetonian) visitors to Table Mountain has been the most exciting legacy for us. South Africans who have never visited the mountain are not only more aware of the landmark’s significance, but are also more aware of the importance of conserving it for future generations.” Bernard Weber, the Founder-President of New7Wonders, said South Africa had done a great job of showcasing Table Mountain’s natural beauty through its N7W frames legacy project. “Being elected one of the New7Wonders of Nature is a distinctive honour for the host countries of each of these 7 marvelous locations. But to be elected is one
thing; to manage these sites sustainably and to maintain the legacy is another challenge,” said Weber. The New7Wonder campaign in 2011 was supported by media personalities, sporting stars, comedians, musicians, bloggers and politicians who helped spread the word to the public, who responded by pledging millions of votes online and via SMS. One of the biggest supporters was Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu who in a video encouraging people to vote said: “You really can understand how when God had created all there is, he said, “Ah, I think I’ve got to do something special here. And so God produced this fantastic gateway in the South. Table Mountain. Our mountain. What a wonder.” For information call 021 424 8181 or visit www.tablemountain.net

Wine & Food Tourism Conference Brings Industry Together
Representatives from the wine, food, tourism and hospitality industry gathered with national and international speakers and delegates at Spier Wine Farm on 1-2 November, to take part in the first annual ‘The Business of Food and Wine Tourism Conference’. Valuable insights were shared with industry leaders from different perspectives, including international best practice; food, wine and travel trends; digital marketing; festivals and events, service excellence and training.
South Africa’s granddaddy of wine routes, the Stellenbosch Wine Routes, which might be considered a golden oldie with its winemaking legacy spanning over more than four decades, has reaffirmed its standing as a world class wine destination with shining results at the 2017 Platter Awards. The Platter White Wine of the Year, the Stellenrust 51 Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc 2015 stems from the verdant soils of the Bottelary sub-route outside Stellenbosch, whilst the coveted Red Wine of the Year Title also went to a Stellenbosch Wine Routes member - the Winery of Good Hope for their Radford Dale Black Rock 2014.
“What I hope everyone took away from these two days, is that wine tourism is a national asset that requires commitment and strategy and very importantly, cooperation – between industries, between disciplines and also between Cape Town and the Winelands. We need each other – not only to create a successful and profitable wine tourism industry, but also to sustainably have a quality offering that will result in job creation and that will make a difference to the lives of our people and communities,” says La Motte and Leopard’s Leap CEO, Hein Koegelenberg. Peter McAtamney of Wine Business Solutions says that 88% of direct revenue starts with a visit to the cellar door. He believes that one of the most important changes that could be made would be to invest in staff training and make the consumer the hero of the narrative.
In addition, South Africa’s oldest wine route scooped 23 of the 94 Platter Five Star Wines, with three of Kleine Zalze’s decorated with 5-star status. There were plenty of first time Five Star winners and from Stellenbosch it was Bartinney and Laibach who made their star-studded debuts. This follows on the results of the 2016 Prescient Report on South African Chardonnay where Stellenbosch soared with 16 out of the top 35 wines that rated 90 or higher on the 100-point quality scale. Three Stellenbosch producers also made the enviable shortlist of five producers vying for the title of the International Wine & Spirit Competition South African Wine Producer of the Year 2016. They are De Morgenzon, Kleine Zalze and Neethlingshof. Other significant Stellenbosch accolades include five of the 2016 ABSA Top 10 Pinotage wines for 2016 and four of the Standard Bank Top 10 Challenge winners whilst four of the FNB Sauvignon Blanc Top 10 champions also call Stellies their home. Stellenbosch also excelled at the 2016 Veritas Awards where 38 double gold medals were awarded to worthy contenders, of which 17 are from this eponymous region; a place where greatness shaped over centuries is merged with the visionary talents of pioneering youth. The Stellenbosch Wine Routes was founded in 1971 and this pioneering initiative has changed the face of wine tourism in South Africa, spawning a host of similar regional wine routes in the country. From humble beginnings the Stellenbosch Wine Routes now boasts more than 152 wineries as members which have been divided into five sub-routes. This bitesize approach helps visitors get the most out of their winelands experiences, on a route that caters to history buffs, golfers, families, romantic couples, nature lovers, gourmands, casual quaffers, and serious pilgrims of the grape. For more information visit www.wineroute.co.za
This sentiment was echoed by Felicity Carter, editor-in-chief of Meininger’s Wine Business International, who emphasised that “the single most important investment a business can make, is staff training.” Clay Gregory, CEO of Visit Napa Valley, shared the inspirational story behind the Napa Valley, which used wine tourism to set itself apart as a unique destination. The visionary Robert Mondavi, whose community spirit succeeded in putting Napa Valley on the map, can be seen as an example for all modern wine regions who wish to market themselves, and certainly as an inspiration for our local initiatives. He believes that the key to the success of the Napa Valley is collaboration, above all else. Wesgro’s Research Unit undertook a research study with 60 tourism experts. Their findings are very relevant to the industry. The key take-outs of this conference is that collaboration is everything, training is imperative and international marketing needs to be prioritised. The conference ended on a high note with an awards ceremony celebrating South Africa’s 2017 Great Wine Capitals Best of Wine Tourism Award winners. The next conference will be held at the Vineyard Hotel in Cape Town on 19 and 20 September 2017.

THE BEST RESIDENCY PROGRAMME IN EUROPE! 3 generations all get residency for life!
A growing number of South Africans are exploring the option of purchasing a property overseas to acquire permanent residency or a 2nd citizenship to leave a legacy for their family; but the choice of where to invest can be daunting.
5. Culture like RSA: With gorgeous outdoor walks, nature reserves, golf estates and open spaces – you will feel right at home. There are plenty of expats who have moved to Cyprus to make it their new home – the Cypriots are warm and friendly and don’t have any xenophobic attitudes or prejudices. 6. Very advantageous tax benefits: a. NO inheritance tax (death tax)! In South Africa, you pay 20% b. NO capital gains tax on any property purchased by 31 Dec 2016! In South Africa it is 16,4% c. Very low personal tax: the first €19,500 of your worldwide income (including pension income) is exempt from personal tax. d. Very low municipal rates: it is 75% cheaper than South Africa being calculated at between 0,1 and 0,2% of the property value.
7. English-speaking universities: On offer is a Medical School faculty (from Oxford University), a variety of post and undergrad degrees; and a host of colleges. You can secure your child’s future by educating them in Cyprus! Cyprus – a full member of the EU – currently has THE BEST permanent residency programme on offer where THREE generations of the same family all secure permanent residency FOR LIFE through the purchase of a single property! This means that the main applicant, the spouse, all dependent children up to the age of 25, PLUS both the parents & the parents-in-law each secure permanent residency permits FOR LIFE by buying one property. No other country in Europe offers this!
Cyprus represents an excellent Plan B investment destination and the property prices are affordable. The choice of where to buy is very personal and the type of property depends on your lifestyle requirements, budget and long term plans. With an impressive portfolio of over 330 completed projects, every style and location of property is available from seafront and hillside villas to beachfront apartments and townhouse complexes. We will find you your ideal home!
And their 2nd citizenship through investment programme is acknowledged as the best on offer because it is the quickest programme in Europe (passports are issued in 3 months); and dependent children up to the age of 28 also qualify! In Cyprus, not only is there no inheritance tax applicable, but the cost of living and the property ownership costs are a fraction of what we pay in South Africa. Being voted THE SAFEST country in the world with a population of under 5Million – investing in Cyprus is a good option. Cyprus is in the most enviable position in the EU in that the refugees from North Africa and Syria are not interested in landing on her shores because Cyprus is not on the migratory route to Europe. There are no work opportunities for the migrants; and no direct access to the wealthy Western European countries (they would have to catch a boat or fly to get there); so this is another reason why investing in Cyprus is a good option. There are a number of other reasons why Cyprus is so appealing: 1. No language barrier: Cyprus is an ex-British colony, so everyone speaks English. The road signs are in English, your telephone accounts and municipality rates accounts are in English; and you feel right at home. 2. Strong economy: Cyprus’ economy is booming with increased foreign investment pouring into the country – this year their growth is predicted to be 2,8% (RSA has zero growth!).
LOGO
They are on a massive infrastructural drive building new marinas, a casino and new golf courses. And Paphos (the province on the West of the island similar to the Western Cape) is The Capital of Culture for 2017. They are expecting more than 1,6Million additional tourists coming to Paphos alone next year. Cyprus is an appealing investment destination because of the solid fiscal policies, offering tangible benefits to investors and having the perfect location being where East meets West. 3. Politically stable: Cyprus is a democratically elected government and has a president with a zero tolerance on bribery and corruption. 4. Incredible lifestyle: You have every modern convenience coupled with incredible outdoor living, a plethora of outdoor activities and loads to do. Being on the cusp of The Med means travelling across to Europe and the UK quick and cheap.
Be clear on the reason why you want a Plan B in Europe. You will approach your investment decision with a different mind-set if you are looking to acquire residency/ citizenship, are wanting to relocate and create a legacy for the children and grand children versus investing in a property to rent out to earn a subsidiary income. Buying a home overseas is not only a major financial and emotional commitment, but a decision that is made easier when you get advice from professionals. It is recommended that you always check exactly what you are buying before signing any contracts. The cost of a property inspection trip to personally view the property opportunities and do the groundwork will save you thousands in the long run. Cypriot Realty is a pioneer in actively and consistently promoting the property opportunities primarily in Cyprus. They have succesfull been doing this from their Cape Town and Sandton offices since 2008. As a result, the company is recognised and respected as Southern Africa’s authoritative investment specialists for promoting Cyprus as an ideal desitination for acquiring permanent residency/citizenship as well as property invest-ment & immigration/retirement.

NIVEA Sunslide Is Heading To A Beach Near You! The NIVEA Sunslide is the first of its kind in the world and will be making its way to South African beaches during December this summer! The giant 4.5 metre high slide uses innovative technology that allows children to get complete sun protection coverage while sliding down the big blue slide. The ingenius concept was developed off the insight that kids love to spend time in the sun, but hate applying sunscreen as they feel it disrupts their fun.
The NIVEA sunslide sprays waterproof sunscreen onto kids and can cover approximatly 100 children in an hour. Hundreds of fine spray jet outlets fitted at the top of the slide, spray down a light film of waterproof NIVEA Sun Kids Swim & Play Protection Sun Lotion SPF 50+ onto the kids as they enter the arch, covering them from head to toe in sunscreen. Even those hard-to-reach places like behind the ears, between the toes and on the scalp are sorted. Each child will also be given a pair of goggles before sliding down to make sure their eyes are completely covered. Just one slide is all it takes for complete sun protection so parents can relax with total peace of mind that they aren’t compromising on care while their kids have fun. NIVEA Sun is South Africa’s number one skin care brand since 2008 and the world’s number one sun care brand, and all its products offer: UVA and UVB balanced protection compliant with Skin Cancer Foundation of South Africa (CANSA) requirements, as well as ISO (European Standards), Water resistant formulas compliant by CANSA requirements and ISO European Standards, 100% reliable sun protection, Immediate protection – you’re protected the moment it is applied. The NIVEA Sunslide will be in the Western Cape on16 December at Clifton Beach, and 17 December at Big Bay.
Be smart In The Sun This summer Warm weather naturally encourages people to spend more time outdoors. Always remember to protect your skin from the harsh African sun. It is important that we take the necessary steps to protect ourselves from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The sun has two types of sun rays – those that is visible, and invisible UV rays that can cause skin cancer. Remember that UV rays can burn right through the fabric of beach umbrellas and can reflect off water, sand and cement. What you should know about sunscreen - Sunscreen helps block harmful UV radiation from causing damage to the skin. Sun Protection factor (SPF) measures the protection provided by a sunscreen against UVB rays. When choosing sunscreen, select a product that provides “broad-spectrum” protection for both UVA and UVB. Sunscreens with SPF 15 or higher are suitable for days you are outside for a short period of time. If you are going to the beach or pool make sure the sunscreen is water-resistant with a SPF of 30 or higher. Higher SPF numbers are better. Sunscreen should be applied 20-30 minutes before heading outside to give it time to absorb into the skin. Re-apply every two hours, or more often when perspiring or swimming, even when it’s overcast. Remember, between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm the UV rays are at their strongest. Wear the right clothes - Clothes do not provide full protection from the sun’s UV rays and can penetrate through fabric and damage covered skin. Nevertheless, clothing remains the most effective way to minimize exposure to UV rays. A hat with a brim of at least 3 inches all around can help shade your face, neck, ears, and scalp from direct sunlight. Wear long sleeves and cover as much of your body as possible. Wear a pair of sunglasses - Wear sunglasses that blocks out UV rays, not one of those cheap ones you buy on the street. Look for shade - Taking regular breaks in the shade can help reduce exposure to sun. When planning your outdoor activities, take an umbrella, set up your picnic
under or near a tree, or take breaks in a nearby shop or pavilion. It will allow you to get out of direct sunlight throughout the day. Be aware that you can be exposed to UV rays even in the shade. You can be exposed to UV rays even on cloudy days. Each year during the hot summer months, CANSA steps up its skin cancer awareness communication through its SunSmart Campaign, to remind South Africans of the dangers of over-exposure to the sun. The campaign includes beach, workplace and school activations, as well as sharing education online on CANSA’s platforms. People at high risk include those with fair skin that burns easily in the sun, personal or family history of skin cancer, lots of moles, that is, more than 50, and those who are being treated with immuno-suppressive drugs. If you are at high risk, you should make protecting your skin in the sun a priority. In addition, try to get as much vitamin D as possible from sources other than the sun, such as, your diet and supplements.
Vaccinate To Protect Against Rise Of Antibiotic-Resistant Superbug The total immunisation coverage in the country over the 2013/2014 period stood at 84.4% according to the latest district health barometer by the Health Systems Trust. The figure points to a drop in almost ten percentage points from the 94% coverage, which was recorded the year prior, indicating a significant decline in the overall administration of vaccines. Blackmore notes that there are some logistical and supply issues that could potentially play a role, such as a lack of access, as well as long queues and extended waiting periods particularly in the public sector. She adds that there also remains a misconception that vaccines could cause autism in children, which has sparked a wide debate on social media and the news around the safety of vaccines.
During National Antibiotics Awareness Week held from 14-20 November the spotlight fell on the critical role that vaccines are likely to play in curbing anti-microbial resistance (AMR) – at least in the foreseeable future until a new stream of antibiotics are brought to market, which according to experts may still be a long way off.
“The outcry by parents and healthcare-givers was triggered by news reports of a now retracted British study that linked autism to the childhood vaccine for Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR). The study has since been proven fraudulent by an investigation published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), but the damaging effects remain, and as a result, many parents are in two minds about whether to vaccinate their children.”
Annemarie Blackmore, Pharma Dynamics’ Antimicrobials Category Manager, says the effective roll-out of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) expanded programme of immunisation (EPI) is paramount in the ongoing fight against antibiotic-resistant superbugs.
Dr Malcolm Miller, Intensivist and Anaesthesiologist at the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) academic hospital, adds his voice to the debate. “As an example, if rolled out globally, the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine – used to protect against the streptococcus pneumonia bacterium – could effectively avert 11.4 million days of antibiotic use per year in children under the age of five. Meningitis and pneumonia are life-threatening diseases caused by this bacterium, which kill more than an estimated 800 000 children annually, yet some still choose not to vaccinate against it. S.pneumoniae is one of the vaccines that form part of the NDoH’s expanded programme of immunisation.”
“Antibiotic resistance is when an antibiotic has lost its ability to effectively control or kill bacterial growth and is caused by the unnecessary and incorrect use of antibiotics.” She explains that vaccines have the potential to decrease disease, which can in turn reduce the need for antibiotic use.
Blackmore’s message to consumers is clear. “The onus of antibiotic stewardship does not only fall on the shoulders of medical professionals. Everyone can and should play their part by vaccinating themselves and their loved ones against the diseases outlined in the expanded immunisation programme.”
One of the country’s leading providers of antibiotics, Pharma Dynamics, will over the next few months be embarking on a national education campaign aimed at both healthcare practitioners and consumer to address the dangers of AMR, whilst promoting the responsible use of antibiotics.

Cape Town Flower Show Displays Variety of Flora The Floral Kingdom of Table Mountain show garden celebrated local fynbos, with other gardens showcasing a little bit of everything from the Cape Winelands. Some highlights at the show included workshops and demonstrations, house and garden high tea talks, The South African Mint Floral Theatre, Epsom flowers in Art, food and drink garden and many more exhibitors. Lusinka Louw, the owner of Le Riche Naturals, a natural Cosmetic Range launched her natural perfume for the first time at the Cape Town Flower Show. All the products in the range are rare and exotic, with botanicals blended to perfection. Le Riche celebrates skin by blending cutting-edged natural, non-toxic ingredients to create highly synergistic formulations that yield dramatic results.
Thousands of people flocked to the Castle of Good Hope, which celebrated its 350th anniversary this year, for the inaugural Cape Town Flower Show held during the last week of October 2016. The purpose of the Cape Town Flower Show was to artistically display the brilliant diversity of the Cape’s flora, inspire its visitors to value their outdoor spaces and environment, provide a platform for the local horticultural industry to promote itself and also to emphasize the strong focus on keeping spaces green despite stringent water restrictions. “When there is drought it is not necessarily to say you can only do gravel and succulents it is about grouping the things with the same water requirements together so that when you do water you are not over watering the one and under watering the other, you are basically giving the right amount of water and that is what water wise is actually about,” says Cape Town Flower Show Curator Paul Odendaal. The show gardens were designed by landscape architects and exhibitions showed visitors what can be done with a bit of flair. Twenty show gardens were on display with both local and exotic species.
Levante to Make SA Debut at Maserati Cape Town Race Week Cape Town Race Week (CTRW), South Africa’s most prestigious regatta will take place between 15 and 20 December 2016. Maserati South Africa the title sponsor will also be the presenting partner of Cape2Rio, the world’s longest transatlantic yacht race and South Africa’s most famous international offshore race, with competitors setting sail on 1 January 2017.
First Lifestyle Estate To Offer Free Private Schooling In SA In a South African property first, Somerset Lakes lifestyle estate located in Somerset West, is offering free private schooling at Reddam House Somerset with each property purchased from the developer from October 2016. According to Jan Minnie, spokesperson for Somerset Lakes, all properties purchased from the developer, Omwieco (Pty) Ltd, will include the price of one full year’s tuition for up to one child per family at Reddam House Somerset. “The main reason for this offer is to make our dream of creating a family-orientated residential community, with schooling located right on the doorstep of the homes, a reality,” says Minnie. “In June 2015, we commissioned an independent study by Urban Econ Development Economists into the demand and growth impact of including a school in a lifestyle development,” he adds. “The research revealed that lifestyle estates developed in conjunction with a school resulted in 10% to 15% higher property price growth when compared to residential areas with pre-existing private schools in the area. This trend was present throughout South Africa.” Research indicates that residential property in close proximity to elementary schools has an 18% higher price than those further away. Middle schools increase property prices by 16% and high schools, by 12%, while properties in close proximity to good quality schools sold for 31% higher. The new Reddam House Somerset, which opened its doors in 2016, is offering the Independent Examiners Board (IEB) National Senior Certificate, which recorded a 98,3% pass rate in 2015.

He adds that towns located on the outskirts of Cape Town, like Somerset West, have become increasingly trendy over the last couple of years. In light of semigration, an increasing number of property buyers are looking for recreational facilities that are offered by so-called ‘adventure estates’.
“Maserati South Africa is incredibly proud to be associated with Cape Town’s premier sailing events, especially as we have a long history with sailing, both locally and internationally. There is a clear synergy between the majestic yachts, the daring sport of sailing, and Maserati’s tradition of craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology,” said Brad Graaff, Operations Manager for European Automotive Imports - South Africa (EAI-SA). EAI-SA is the official importer of Maserati vehicles in South Africa. This will be the Italian luxury automobile brand’s second title sponsorship of Maserati CTRW. Graaff said that Maserati will introduce the South African public to its new game-changing SUV, the Levante, which will officially be in the country as of December 2016, at Maserati CTRW and Cape2Rio. “Luxurious and adventurous, the Levante is a SUV done the Maserati way: its unmistakable Maserati design is showcased in sleek yet sporty lines. It is comfortable and spacious, whilst delivering outstanding performance even in the most extreme conditions. We are extremely excited for the South African public to meet the Levante,” said Graaff.
Somerset Lakes, for example, affords residents the opportunity to experience an array of outdoor activities, including fishing, canoeing and sailing on the six hectare lake.
Members of the public will be able to see the exquisite and luxury Italian car firsthand at the Maserati CTRW Race Village, which will be showcased as part of a stunning exhibition featuring the entire Maserati range. The signature range, consisting of the Ghibli, Quattroporte, GranTurismo and GranCabrio, will be on display at Jetty 2 at the Victoria and Alfred (V&A) Waterfront throughout Maserati CTRW and during Cape2Rio.
In the estate there are 59 new homes for immediate sale in “The Lakes” and “Kingfisher Terrace” phases. All of these properties will come with the Reddam scholarship and the new owners can expect to take occupation at the end of 2017. The offer will work on a first-come-first-served basis and the sales centre at the estate has been geared up to process the housing purchases and scholarship system at the same time.

Cape2Rio Dream Comes True For Grassy Park Man 31-year-old Tobin’s introduction to yachting took place in 1997 when he was just 13 and in Grade 8 at Grassy Park High School. “I was approached by Zeekoevlei Yacht Club, who run a development sailing programme in partnership with Wynberg Rotary. Since then I have taken part in many sailing events in South Africa and abroad.” “I also wanted to give back to the club, my school and sailing in the country, and thus we created HBYSDT,” adds Tobin. “My goal is to give sailors who come from disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to sail on a highly competitive keel boat. Is he looking forward to his first Cape2Rio? “I always looked forward to doing the race, and I’m glad my first race will be with a group of experienced sailors that come from a similar background as mine. I consider them all as great friends.”

Marco Tobin comes from Grassy Park, a part of Cape Town more often associated with gangs than sporting excellence. Tobin will be one of the senior yachtsmen in the crew of Gryphon, a leading contender in the 2017 Cape2Rio yacht race presented by Maserati. The nine-man crew of Gryphon has also been drawn predominantly from sailors with similar backgrounds. The 43-foot racing sloop will be part crewed by nine members of the Hout Bay Youth Sailing Development Trust (HBYSDT), an organisation dedicated to fostering “empowerment, achievement, determination, hope, pride and success.” HBYSDT explains that the Gryphon team, “have evolved from development sailing backgrounds, moving up the ladder and proving their worth as competent, competitive sailors.”
Besides Yon, Tobin and students Yon and Agulhas, the crew members are: Andre Julius (49-years-old), Sieraj Jacobs (36), Leroy Rudolf (29), Rian Turner (44) and Clarence Hendricks (34). Ray Matthews, Race Chairman Cape2Rio 2017, recently said, “It has been very pleasing for us at Royal Cape to see the frenzied activity since Marco, Andre and Theo have taken over the Gryphon yacht.” “Their recent results in The Mossel Bay Race and the Overnight Race show they will be a force to be reckoned with. Skipper Theo Yon grew up in Hout Bay and recalls those days: “I used to look out my window and saw all these boats sailing on Wednesday night … I told myself that one day I want to sail.” Yon started sailing in 2000 when HBYSDT first introduced development sailing. “I have a really good team,” says Yon, who will be taking part in his second Cape2Rio. We are all locals, but the guys have done some international sailing. We are taking two students from our sailing academy - Lorenzo Yon, Theo’s brother, aged 18, and Daniel Agulhas, aged 20.”
Lourensford Tops Energy Conservation At Green Awards Lourensford Estate in Somerset West, having invested over R7 million to install 686kWp solar photovoltaic (PV) plants on the roof of the winery and the packshed, has been named Best Farming Practice Winner in the Leadership in Energy Conservation category at the Nedbank Green Wine Awards 2016.
Since that first, ambitious broadcast from Southey Vines on 1 July, 21 years ago, by renowned radio presenter and television host Martin Baillie, Radio Helderberg has grown from strength to strength and has become a powerhouse of information, news and views and an avid community supporter. “Radio Helderberg has morphed from a charitable association to a business, flourishing on advertising income only, thanks to ongoing local, national and international support.” “We broadcast a wide range of music, interviews and community notices in three languages – English, Afrikaans and Xhosa, 24 hours a day,” says station manager, Koos van der Merwe. Radio Helderberg’s broadcast area is not limited to the Basin, but extends to parts of the Peninsula, Northern suburbs, West Coast, Stellenbosch and over the mountain to Grabouw, Hermanus and Caledon..
The historic farm invests in sustainable energy to reduce electricity costs, with the solar plants contributing an expected carbon emission reduction of 987 tonnes per year. The 500kWh solar plant on the winery roof and the 186kWh solar plant on the packshed roof, generate 2800kWh daily, enough to run the winery with the surplus fed to the grid supplying the rest of the estate. “Our vision is one where economic stability and environmental sustainability go hand in hand in a profitable partnership,” says Koos Jordaan, GM of Lourensford Estate. “The solar power plant forms part of our sustainable agriculture and conservation programme, which has also seen Lourensford protect about 1200 hectares of Fynbos and plant an extensive Protea farm across 18 hectares.” Energy Saving in the winery include: Smart metering installed; Procedures put into effect regarding the switching on and off of the compressors, Refrigeration chiller software adjusted for more effective energy use; ‘Time of use’ communication to staff on ‘red’ expensive times of energy use installing energy saving bulbs in the winery. Energy Saving on the broader estate include: All homesteads on the farm have been switched to prepaid electricity; Timers and blankets installed on geysers; Tracker units gathering live data were installed on tractors and farm vehicles; Inverters installed on pumps to ease start-ups and the farm runs annual Earth Protection Awareness training sessions for all staff. Owned by business mogul Christo Wiese, the Estate has about 100 hectares of vines. Venues and activities include the Millhouse Kitchen Restaurant, a coffee roastery and art gallery. The farm hosts weekend markets, as well as cycling and trail-running events.
A core team of 16 staff is employed full-time while most of the 24 talented presenters provide services on a voluntary basis. Some have been with the station for the duration and others for 10 years and longer. In December 2016 the station will relocate to modern studios amid scenic surroundings and tranquil water features at The Sanctuary, off the R44 near Somerset Mall. “Thank you for your support as listener, advertiser, partner and friend! Our goal is to continually bring you excellent programming & listening enjoyment.” For more information visit www.radiohelderberg.co.za or Listen to Streaming: helderberg.radiostream.co.za

Attakwas Trail - Just 2 Years Old but Already Big on History
The Attakwas Trail, which takes place on Saturday, 17 December 2016 offers trail runners the unique experience of traversing the remote Attakwaskloof. The fabled kloof was once a trading route between the coast and the hinterland of the Klein Karoo, but in recent years it has become synonymous with mountain biking. The Fairview Attakwas Extreme MTB Challenge is notoriously tough and offers mountain bikers the annual opportunity to attempt to conquer the rugged Attakwaskloof. In December 2015 Dryland Event Management pioneered the Attakwas Trail, which provided trail runners with the opportunity to test their metal – following the ancient footpaths and wagon trails of our ancestors – as they too seek to negotiate the Attakwaskloof, deep within the Outeniqua Mountains. The 29 kilometre Attakwas Trail Extreme starts at Saffraanriver, climbs skyward to the Attakwaskloof neck from where it descends into the kloof itself. The trails are rugged tracks first established by ox-wagons and later refurbished to rudimentary gravel roads. But as they are seldom used, even by the kloof’s nature conservation custodians, the increasingly weathered surfaces now speak of the harsh conditions in the Attakwaskloof; where flash flooding, searing summers and icy winters prevail. Once trail runners have conquered the Attakwaskloof the route then descends through the reputedly haunted Grootkloof. Though fortunately for the suspicious among the Attakwas Trail runners, they’ll be making the descent in the bright sunlight of a December day so they’re unlikely to encounter one of the Attaqua Khoi-Khoi apparitions who are said to haunt the valley. After 29 kilometres of historic trail running, the finish at Bonniedale Holiday Farm on the banks of the Kamma River, will take on the oasis-like appeal it did in the days when the trip was made by ox-wagon. For trail runners not yet up to the rigors of Attakwas Trail Extreme, the Attakwas Trail Mini offers a taste of the rugged terrain, stunning mountain vistas, and an intoxicating hint of the adventures which the longer distance runners encountered in a manageable 7.5 kilometre distance.
Riaan Manser bidding for Amabubesi status at Cape Epic 2017 Riaan Manser is about as adventurous as you get: his bearded features first became familiar to South Africans as they watched from afar while he rode a bicycle around Africa, circumnavigated Madagascar and Iceland by kayak. In 2014 he took to a tiny boat with then fiancé Vasti Geldenhuys and they rowed across the massive Atlantic Ocean from Morocco to New York. After they got married earlier this year they crossed the treacherous section of the Pacific Ocean from California to Hawaii by rowboat. Most of us would need a long period of rest after just reading about those expeditions. But the Manser/Geldenhuys axis is not like most of us: they are already training to take on the rugged Absa Cape Epic together for the third time in March next year. Riaan will be bidding for his Amabubesi – “pride of lions” – status for finishing all three, but Vasti had to pull out during the event this year after falling and breaking a bone in her hip. In spite of her setback, Vasti will be on the starting line alongside Riaan in 2017. What is it about the Epic that keeps him coming back? “It means I can have a super challenging week but still be ‘home’. The mountain bike community is a relaxed, determined and competitive one, which we enjoy socialising with. We have had some incredible days in awesome, wild African countryside with incredible company,” Riaan says. Is Riaan looking forward to becoming an Amabubesi rider? “Very much so. Apart from the pride of completing three Epics, the memories we have made over these years have been awesome.” Vasti believes though that their experiences at sea have been good preparation for a team race like the Cape Epic: “Obviously spending days, weeks, months together in a small space does prepare you for any team race. We hopefully ironed out all our grievances with each other,” she laughs.

What are their objectives for the race? “I cycle because it keeps me in shape,” responds Vasti. “Riaan and I train each year for the Epic, but do not do many MTB races in the rest of the calendar year. For me, I would like to finish the race with Riaan. Even if it is as team 600, I’ll be proud.” “We have started training three months earlier than we did on our previous two Cape Epics. With a few extra months of preparation we should be in a better condition come start day. Vasti and I agreed beforehand that our primary goal is to get our medals, but obviously we would like to spend less time out in the field this time round.”
