City Launches Water Ratings System To Promote Savings

The City of Cape Town has embarked on an initiative to encourage industry and companies to improve their water management practices by using a newly developed ratings tool. The City hosted an awards ceremony to recognise the 19 industries and companies that have participated in the assessment process and to hand over their certificates and star ratings.

The companies that participated are: In2Foods, Total Garage, Sylko Plant Hire, Advanced Galvanising, Alibaba Foods, Coastal Casings, GlaxoSmithKline, Sonnendal Dairy, Peninsula Beverages, Capegate, NGK Ceramics, Plascon, Improchem, Biovac, Johnson & Johnson, Marley Roofing, Avis Budget, Groot Constantia and Southern Canned Products.

The City’s Water and Sanitation Department appointed JG Afrika (Pty) Ltd to develop a ratings system to assess water management practices.

First assessments undertaken by JG Afrika and the City’s inspectors evaluated a wide range of companies in this pilot phase – from multi-nationals to small businesses in sectors ranging from the food and beverage industry to industrial processes.

The Western Cape not only attracts locals, but many international visitors flock to the area to enjoy its scenic mountains, rivers, beaches, vineyards, floral kingdom, nature reserves and many more.

Although tourism is the major attraction to the province, the line-up of cultural, sporting and other lifestyle events will once again be a major draw-card to the area in 2017.

Bucket list events such as the CapeTown Cycle Tour and the ABSA Cape Epic are on the hot list for serious and adventure riders, while runners flock to the Old Mutual Two Oceans Ultra and Half Marathon - not to mention the many festivals, carnivals, parades, markets and conferences taking place in and around the Western Cape.

Safety will be the main priority at the City of Cape Town’s beaches this summer. The City’s Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department has employed permanent and seasonal lifeguards in order to improve beach safety over the summer holiday season.

The 12 permanent lifeguards and over 100 seasonal lifeguards will be deployed at various beaches over weekends.

From 1 December 2016 lifeguards will be on these beaches daily from 10:00 until 18:00. An essential requirement for appointment as a beach lifeguard is possession of a valid Lifeguard Award, as well as experience in surf lifesaving. The aim of the City’s lifeguarding programme is to provide a lifesaving standard of the highest quality, and to provide lifeguards with better career path opportunities.

Meet City Choices

On 17 November, at Pelmeadow Estate in Klapmuts, near Paarl, a horse named Baybar quietly made South African history. He was the first horse in South Africa to bravely enter into the depths of an underwater treadmill.

Overstrand residents will soon have an exciting new destination where they can indulge in a little retail therapy; Whale Coast Mall is currently under construction by shopping centre specialist developer Dorpstraat, together with its partners Hosken Consolidated Investments and Shoprite Checkers. The mall is scheduled to open in November 2017.

Since the 1990’s the benefits of underwater training have been known, and more recently a number of small animal veterinary practices have started employing this technology to aid with the rehabilitation of canine patients, especially after surgical cruciate ligament repairs.

When a horse named Baybar arrived on Pellmeadow Estate, he turned the owner, Dr Deon de Beer’s perceptions of horses and horse care around. Living on a small farm without the use of a tractor, other plans had to be made to deal with stable muck.

The Overstrand area is currently experiencing major market growth, both in terms of population and spending power. Jannie Krüger, co-founder and director of Dorpstraat, explains that aside from the variety and convenience the centre brings to residents and visitors alike, its establishment is very positive for the regional economy as a whole.

At the end of 2014, Baybar Trailers started building horse boxes and farm implements that could be used by smaller-scale farmers who do not have tractors. All Baybar implements are built to be towed by quad bikes.

As all horse owners know, one horse is never enough and soon a few race horses found their way to the estate once they had retired from the track. One in particular arrived with an injured tendon and Dr de Beer, against strong advice to have the horse put down, decided to give him another chance at a more peaceful life. But his injury still had to be treated.

Dr De Beer therefore sought advice from colleagues in the United Stated who had successfully rehabilitated horses with similar injuries and constructed the underwater treadmill, called Baybar Active. Baybar was given the privilege of trying it out first, and gave his stamp of approval.

Training a horse in an underwater environment has many benefits which can help to get horses moving and exercising much faster after injury or surgery. Where they would usually be restricted to box rest and minimal hand walking, they can now continue to exercise because the weight they have to put on injured limbs is decreased and strengthen its muscles without putting added pressure on an injury.

Muscle strength is increased through the resistance provided by the water, but because horses don’t actually swim in the water their necks do not have to arch and their backs don’t hollow, making it ideal for horses with back problems.

According to Mooij et al.

2013, at the highest water levels, horses bend their backs more after ten days of working on an underwater treadmill.

This research also suggested that adding an underwater treadmill session to a horse’s fitness regime will relieve back pain and increase its range of motion. It seems that after six sessions, horses take fewer, longer steps in the water treadmill. (Scott et al. 2010) There are also benefits for horses with oseatoarthritis and it improved horses’ postural stability. (M.King et al. 2013; M.R. King et al. 2013). Research done by York and Walker, ( 2014) supports the idea that the physical demands on a horse is intensified while it supports the symmetry of the horse’s movement. Just walking on the treadmill may evoke more activity than trotting (Tokuriki et al.1999).

The facilities are now open and will soon also facilitate post-injury or post-surgical rehabilitation for horses. Procedures are overseen by Dr de Beer himself with qualified veterinary nurses in attendance.

“The development underway provides jobs for those who work in the construction industry, and the completed centre will offer many jobs for tenants and their staff.

On top of this it will require full-time, casual and operational staff – boosting the local job market and resulting in increased opportunities for employment.”

Developed by Dorpstraat – the team also responsible for the establishment of the popular Weskus Mall (Vredenburg) and Mountain Mill Shopping Centre (Worcester). The new Whale Coast Mall will be built in line with international standards and cover some 30 000 square meters.

It is conveniently situated in Sandbaai near the Hemel-en-Aarde Road and R43 intersection, between Onrus and Hermanus.

“Whale Coast Mall will act as a one-stop destination, offering a multi-purpose entertainment centre and an all-year round comparative shopping experience – particularly in terms of fashion – in a safe, sheltered environment,” says Krüger.

The contemporary new centre will boast a diverse and exciting tenant mix, including retail giants Checkers and Woolworths. Other stores such as Dischem, Clicks, Mr Price Home, Mr Price Sports and Due South will also feature, as well as food chains such as Spur, Daily Coffee, Melissa’s and Mugg & Bean. Fashion tenants include a large Foschini and Truworths, as well and a Markham, Donna Claire, Ackermans and Cape Union Mart, to name but a few. It will also offer ample free parking and feature multiple entrances to avoid traffic congestion.

The mall caters to a broader market of shopper, differentiating it from the entrepreneurial businesses situated in Hermanus’ Central Business District (CBD); an innate facet of the coastal town’s charm. Krüger is excited about the opportunities Whale Coast Mall brings to the area – both in terms of economic growth, but also through offering greater diversity and convenience to shoppers.

Farm Workers Turn Carbon Credits Into Cash

A game-changer in Western Cape agriculture has seen farm workers benefiting from carbon credits earned through a climate change mitigation initiative by an organically certified estate which practices regenerative farming.

27 workers on the Spier estate in Stellenbosch are to share half the R204 000 paid out from carbon credits - derived from practicing regenerative farming on a section of the organically certified wine farm. An average of R4 000 was given to each worker, with those managing the cattle component receiving a larger portion of the credits.

“The farm has acquired the credits for sequestering 6 493 tons of carbon dioxide in its soil, which is cultivated in as natural way as possible by using regenerative farming practices like high density grazing,” says Spier Wine Farm’s livestock farm manager, Angus McIntosh. “This is a technique that involves frequent stock rotations aimed at using livestock to mimic nature by restoring carbon and nitrogen contained in livestock and poultry urine into the soil profile.”

Among institutions that have bought credits is the office of the Premier of the Western Cape, Helen Zille. “We now have a sixth revenue stream from carbon credits in addition to our other five - from sales of beef, chicken, eggs, pork and lamb, says Spier Sustainability Director, Heidi Newton-King. Livestock farming on the Spier Wine Farm practices high-density rotational grazing alongside the vineyards. 74 hectares of pastureland supports about 300 cattle, 4 500 laying hens, 1 200 broiler chickens, pigs and sheep.

Soil samples from the livestock farm were tested over an 18-month period by a leading US laboratory. “They confirm a significant and rapid enhancement of soil organic carbon over this period,” shared Credible Carbon.

“The presence of a great many animals in a confined space for a short period of time deposits enormous amounts of manure and urine on the land leading to healthy, vigorous pasture growth without the need of fertilizer,“ says McIntosh. “No inorganic fertilisers nor grains are used as animal feed, thereby disassociating the farming practice with industrial agriculture.”

FAO estimates that carbon released from soil sinks is responsible for about one third of GHG emissions. However, says the FAO, “There is major potential for increasing soil carbon through restoration of degraded soils and widespread adoption of soil conservation practices.”

“This is the second tranche of carbon credits earned by the farm following a smaller previous payout bringing it to a total of 7 852. This initiative adds to the farm’s sustainability and underlines that regenerative farming is not only good for the environment but makes good business sense,” shares Newton-King.

Globally, the conversion of grass- and forest land to crop and grazing lands has resulted in losses of soil carbon, explains the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). Organic carbon accumulates in soils through photosynthesis as plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Carbon escapes into the atmosphere if land loses its cover of natural vegetation and becomes denuded and degraded through practices such as intensive agriculture and monoculture, and use of inorganic pesticides and herbicides.

The credits were bought by a South African bank, brokered by Credible Carbon, a business dedicated for making carbon work for the poor as it facilitates carbon trading through credits earned for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and global warming.

The assessment covers different aspects of water management, namely: Where the water comes from; How the water is used on site and in operations, What measures are in place to reduce potable water demand, How much effluent is discharged into the system and the quality of this effluent and The ratings tool looks at potable water, grey water and black water systems.

Companies were awarded points: if they had implemented measures to reduce their potable water consumption; if they had made changes to operating systems in order to re-use grey water, thereby reducing the volume of potable water required; if they are treating black water, thereby reducing the level of contaminated water entering the sewer system which would ultimately need to be treated at a wastewater treatment plant.

Companies who receive one star are compliant with the relevant water legislation and the City’s water by-laws, between two and five stars have implemented measures to reduce water consumption and limit water pollution. Companies who achieve five stars are being innovative in their operations and are finding unique ways in which to conserve water and limit water pollution, whether via stormwater or sewer disposal. The information from the assessment can be used to guide the industries towards the areas that require attention, or where there is potential for improvement.

Global Rugby Icon Bryan Habana Releases His Genetic Information Springbok rugby hero Bryan Habana has shared his DNA information giving the world a look at his genetic power, endurance and recovery disposition. The release of Habana’s personal genetic information is part of a global challenge to rugby players across the world to have their DNA tested and analysed.

Global vision - Habana has joined the vision by global biotechnology company DNAFit to create the largest rugby genetic database in the sporting world, and has put his money where his mouth is by being one of the first professional rugby players in the world to be tested.

Setting the ambitious target of 1000 rugby samples genotyped for research and analysis by the end of 2018, Habana said he had released his personal genetic code and associated information “to encourage other players from around the world to do their DNA test and help build this very important database.”

Habana did a simple mouth swab test from DNAFit to collect a DNA sample, which looked at 45 genes known to determine power, endurance and recovery. Supported by independent research, the test used the DNAFit Peak Performance Algorithm, based on validated genetic variant scoring methods, to determine Habana’s personal genetic score for power/ endurance response and other important information to assist training. Unsurprisingly, as one of the best wings in South African rugby history, Habana’s DNA revealed he is genetically pre-disposed to be a very well-rounded athlete.

Analysing his results and looking back at his career, Habana believes the information could have made a huge difference to his performance. “As a legacy, I want other players and athletes to have the opportunity of understanding the make-up of their DNA and how best to train as a result. Looking at these results and what they say about my genetic make-up means that I probably could have pushed myself further in certain areas and who knows the difference this could have made?”

Already a decorated rugby superstar, world cup winner and international icon, Habana understands the difference between winning and losing. “It’s sometimes that 1%, the smallest of margins that can be the difference between winning and losing. This information and data gives you that edge,” he said.

Realising the difference that this could have made in his own career, Habana has launched an initiative aimed at helping rugby players from around the world become better, faster, healthier and stronger players.

“Through the use of science and understanding how we are made, we can develop the ability to create programs using DNA information that will bring out the best of us and change the way people train and possibly the way positions are chosen.”

The aim of Nine’ Academy is to ensure that students are industry ready on graduating.

Janine was privileged to work with top actors such as Nicholas Cage, Colin Farrell, Meg Ryan, Leon Schuster and William H Macey. Productions include: “The Deal”, “Sinking the Lusitania”,” Scorpion King Rise of the Akkadian”, ”Mama Jack”, “The Librarian”, “Lord Of War”, “Ask the Dust”, “Free Willy” and “Faith Like Potatoes”. She enjoys being a supervisor because it means she’s able to learn new things every day. “I dropped out of school when I was in grade 11, but I was so fortunate to come and work on this farm because I’ve received many opportunities here,” she says. These include computer and secretarial courses.

“We also get an Individual Learning Spend which can be used to pay for studies or for our children’s education.” This year, Marilise used her ILS to buy her son a new school uniform as he has just started high school.

“The whole concept of making wine is intriguing – the way you take a wellgrown grape and it ends up becoming something totally different,” says Henrich.

“My favourite wine is the 21 Gables Chenin blanc which I’m very proud of having helped to make. You can taste the ageing and the extra bit of energy put into crafting it.”

Heinrich joined Spier seven years ago as a farm worker. Now a senior cellar assistant, “the growth has been so fast – I’m still learning and still developing,” he says. “Spier really tries to assist you where there’s a problem or where there’s an opportunity to grow.”

Henrich loves cars – so when he’s not at work, he’s either fixing one up, or watching ‘Street Outlaws’, an American drag racing show. “I also enjoy spending time with my five-year-old son. He makes me laugh – the small things he does, simple jokes he makes.”

5 WAYS OF SAVING WATER

THE ORGANIC WAY “THE MORE ORGANIC ELEMENTS YOU HAVE, THE BETTER YOUR WATER RETENTION,” JOHANN SAYS.

The Western Cape is experiencing one of the driest summer’s on record – meaning every drop of water counts. Drawing on the know-how stemming from nearly two decades spent among the vines, Johann Smit, Spier’s viticulturist, reveals the earth- friendly ways that Spier is preventing water being lost or wasted – across both its conventional and organic farms.

Smart watering:

“In dry years like this one, we irrigate less frequently, but for a longer duration to wet the roots and not just the topsoil.

This is done at night.”

Natural cover:

When pruning is done in the winter, the offcuts are placed right below the vines and clover is planted there too. This reduces root and soil temperatures, enabling the vines to withstand the Cape’s notorious heatwaves. When it rains, the prunings also act as a sponge, slowing down the flow of water and encouraging infiltration into the soil.

Between the vines:

We plant cover crops like oats mixed with vetch (a member of the pea family) between the vines. In September a tractor and roller flattens the crops, pushing nitrogen back into the soil and creating a dense carpet. Not only does this preserve the water in the soil more effectively but it also prevents weeds (which compete with the vines for water) from sprouting. This means that unlike many other farms, Spier doesn’t have to pull a weed-killing disc through the vines – a method that ends up breaking the soil’s “seal”, leading to greater water loss.

Taking root:

Sometimes we plant radishes between the vines. After the rolling, the radish dies and disintegrates, leaving behind holes in the soil which allow more water infiltration and oxygen.

And so at Eight, expect to tuck into the likes of zucchini and parmesan cheese soufflé with salad – or perhaps a beef burger with Brie, caramelised onion and hand cut chips. Dessert includes Eight’s famous flourless chocolate cake as well as a Vanilla panna cotta with spiced pineapple, bitter chocolate and honeycomb.

Chef Lolli did her cooking training in Franschhoek, London and with the acclaimed Edgar Osjinik at Buitenverwachting. Before joining Spier, she had stints at The Showroom, the Cellars-Hohenort Hotel and Singita.

In 2011, she travelled to Berkeley, California to spend time in the kitchen of Chez Panisse.

Its owner, the chef and author Alice Waters is one of her biggest inspirations.

“She was pioneer of a culinary philosophy that maintains that cooking should be based on the finest and freshest seasonal ingredients that are produced sustainably and locally,” says Chef Lolli. “That really changed my approach to food as a whole.”

The 2016 edition Spier Secret Festival was the first one hosted in Johannesburg – at the Nando’s Central Kitchen in Yeoville.

The food and wine event was held on Sunday 6 November. The day of workshops, talks, eating and drinking explored the way that food is an intrinsic part of our cultural history and identity.

Speaker highlights included the artist collective Cateringa & Kompanen from The Netherlands who showed how algae is the super food of the future, and treated delegates to algae smoothies at the interactive algae bar. TIPS TO ENSURE SAFETY IN TABLE MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK! With the sun rays heating up the Mother City, here are some helpful tips to ensure your safety, while you enjoy the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) and surrounding sites in Cape Town and the Western Cape.

Take a hike, walk or cycle in the park, but don’t embark on the trip on your own.

Travel in groups of 4 or more, but less than 10. Walk, run or cycle at the speed of the slowest person. For a light walk, take the scenic Constantia Nek trail or for something more challenging tackle the world class Lions Head. Do not cycle or hike before 08:00am or after 18:00pm.

If you are visiting the picnic and braai sights this holiday, remember to keep the area clean from litter and do not throw your cigarette butts out of your car window – summers are often dry and windy and it takes just one spark to start a devastating fire. Take plenty water with you en route. Wear sunblock, a hat and take a light, all-weather jacket with you as you can never be sure how many seasons you’ll get in a day!

Avoid carrying valuables such as cash, cameras, i-pods etc. If you are confronted by suspects - do not resist. Programme the TMNP emergency phone numbers 0861-106-417/ SAPS 10111 onto your cell phone and make sure someone at home knows where you are.

Please do not feed any baboons you may encounter – they are wild animals and can become dangerous. Lastly, remember to enjoy the park the way she is meant to be enjoyed – but please, take nothing but photographs and leave nothing but footprints.

NEW DIRECT SEATS TO CAPE TOWN SOAR BY HALF A MILLION

A project to improve air access into the Western Cape played a key role in increasing international arrivals and generating R3 billion in direct tourism spend for the province.

“Between September and October 2016, 147 622 international arrivals were recorded at Cape Town International Airport, up from 119 451 passengers last year.

International air arrivals into Cape Town are increasing by 22% year-on-year.”

Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities, said there had been a significant increase in international arrivals at Cape Town International Airport since the launch of the Cape Town Air Access initiative - a partnership between the Western Cape Government, the City of Cape Town, Airports Company of South Africa and Cape Town Tourism.

Minister Winde said increased air access made a significant impact on jobs and growth and added that forward bookings from the airlines showed increases from several countries.

“We have secured six new routes and eight route expansions, resulting in over half a million more two-way seats coming into Cape Town. Since July last year, this additional capacity generated R3 billion in tourism spend for the Western Cape.”

BA TO SA - MORE SEATS MORE OFTEN THAN EVER BEFORE

“British Airways this summer added three Boeing 777-200 flights from Gatwick to Cape Town to meet the increasing demand on that route. Across airlines, bookings from the United Kingdom for the summer season are up by 15%.”

“Lufthansa Airlines launched its all-year non-stop flight between Frankfurt and Cape Town. Germany is our second largest tourism source market and we welcome 170 000 German tourists each year.”

“There’s a 17% increase in bookings from Germany for our summer season this year,” Minister Winde concluded.

YEAR-ROUND LINK TO FRANKFURT Lufthansa Airlines launched their new year-round, non-stop route between Frankfurt and Cape Town to grow the Cape’s business with Germany. Currently the market is the province’s sixth largest trading partner, our second biggest foreign direct investor, and our second largest tourism source market - with 170 000 German tourists visiting every year.

British Airways is operating its busiest schedule ever to South Africa this summer season, offering up to 33 flights a week over peak periods.

Over the periods of especially high demand, from 1 – 9 January and 3 – 27 February, British Airways will offer two more Boeing 747-400 services from Heathrow.

During these periods there will be 19 flights a week between the UK and Cape Town.

A number of major German logistics, manufacturing and energy companies have opened successful branches in the Cape, and others such as DHL are running their entire African operation out of the Cape.

The new route will help to grow the relationship as it provides three weekly direct flights between Cape Town International Airport and Frankfurt Airport. The route is the result of extensive lobbying and support from Cape Town Air Access.

“For nearly six decades, Lufthansa has connected Africa to the rest of the world, and South Africa as a key market remains a strategic focus for the group.”

“The Cape Town route has grown consistently over the past few years and now even doubling the winter capacity isn’t enough to match demand. Fortunately Gatwick gives us the flexibility to add more services, using aircraft that are ideally configured for leisure customers,” said Sue Petrie, British Airways commercial manager for Southern Africa.

“These and the extra two Heathrow services mean that over the peak of peaks we’ll be offering over 6 000 seats a week on the route.”

Western Cape Minister of Economic Development and Tourism, Alan Winde, said: “In the past year, we’ve added over 400 000 direct two-way seats between our region and key international markets. Forward bookings for our summer season show an increase in tourists travelling to the Western Cape, including 15% growth from the United Kingdom. As an important partner in driving this growth, I would like to thank British Airways for their continued business confidence in the Western Cape.”

British Airways has been promoting the Gatwick – Cape Town service in the UK using a social media campaign featuring fun, pop-up displays of African animals appearing at train stations. The 747s it is operating boast refreshed interiors and state-of-the-art inflight entertainment systems, similar to those on its newest aircraft. They are also specially configured to offer more Club World seats.

“Cape Town has risen significantly in global rankings as a preferred destination for both leisure and business travellers and we plan to extend the service to five weekly flights in the European Winter season of 2017/2018,” said Tamur GoudarziPour, Lufthansa Vice President for Sales Africa and Middle East.

This new route will also be supported by a Munich flight in our summer season, and Wesgro looks forward to welcoming the new influx of German visitors.

BE SAFE AND SMART THIS SUMMER SEASON Safety tips for Beachgoers Swim only where there are lifeguards and where signs indicate that it is safe to do so. Do not swim in an area if there are no lifeguards present. Make sure that the lifeguards can see you when you are in the water. Always swim between the red and yellow flags. These indicate safe, supervised swimming areas. An area outside of these flags could have dangerous rip-currents and tides.

- Only swim in areas where other people are present. Swim in groups and advise friends or family when you go swimming.

- Do not swim when there are marine animals such as whales, dolphins and seals in the area.

- If you find yourself in trouble, raise your arm and wave to attract the lifeguard’s attention. Try not to panic, as this will make you tired. If you see someone in trouble in the sea, alert the lifeguards or find trained help. Do not put your own life in danger as well.

- Do not allow family members and friends to go into the water if they have consumed alcohol.

Be aware of Rip Currents During spring tide these rip currents are stronger than normal and although rip currents at all times pose a danger to bathers - they pose the greatest danger during the spring tide. Bathers are at risk of being swept out to sea by rip currents, while swimming or wading in water along the beach front. Even bathers wading in shallow water who find themselves trapped in a rip current that forms suddenly are at risk of being swept out to sea by rip currents.

The Shark Spotters app provides water users with all the latest shark safety information at City beaches, including which flag is currently flying and why. The flags fly for various reasons, including: poor spotting conditions due to cloud cover, shark sightings, an indication of water temperature, the lunar phase, and an indication of whether the shark exclusion barrier in Fish Hoek has been deployed or not.

The app is updated by the Shark Spotters on duty in real time so users can be assured that they always have the most current information at their fingertips to help them make a personal assessment about shark risks when entering the water.

Beachgoers will appreciate the app for all of the other information of interest which it offers including the weather conditions, marine animal activity in the area (such as whales, seals, dolphins, sunfish etc.), the details of amenities on the beaches, as well as short surf videos of isolated surf spots covered by the programme that do not have live web-cams in operation. Furthermore, the app includes safety tips to reduce the risk of encountering a shark, as well as information about shark activity in Cape Town.

The Shark Spotters app is available on iOS and Android platforms and is free to download.

Tips while travelling - Awareness: Think for your fellow drivers. Be alert and aware of what’s happening around you at all time.

- Obey the speed limit.

- Never drive in the yellow line - Wear a Seatbelt: Ensure all vehicle occupants wear a seat belt.

- Maintain a safe following distance.

- Long distance travelling: If you’re on a long journey, divide the driving time into two hour shifts, taking turns behind the wheel with other eligible drivers in the car.

Bathers caught-up in a rip current should not panic. Simply stay afloat by treading water, don’t try to swim against the current as it will only cause exhaustion. Let the current sweep you out to sea but at your first opportunity swim parallel to the beach front until you are free of the rip current and then use the incoming waves to get back to shore. While this is happening shout for help and wave an arm to alert people on the beach to raise the alarm.

Swim at beaches where lifeguards are on duty and obey the instructions of the lifeguards and only swim within the safe swimming zones lifeguards mark (using their red and yellow flags). Children should have responsible adult supervision at all times around coastal and inland waters.

Shark Spotters app to enhance beach safety With the beach season on our doorstep, the City of Cape Town is excited to announce the launch of the Shark Spotters mobile app – an innovative app to assist swimmers and surfers to be more shark smart at Cape Town’s beaches this summer.

Stellenbosch Harvest Parade brings fanfare to City of Oaks The oak-lined streets of Stellenbosch will be invaded by a colourful community of winemaking charismatics on uniquely adorned ‘chariots’ on Saturday, January 28.

The annual Harvest Parade comes to this most prominent town of South African wine to usher in the grape harvest season with convivial cheer.

The memorable Stellenbosch Harvest Parade also pays homage to the people behind this labour of love and especially the invaluable contribution of South Africa’s farm workers.

This proud Stellenbosch procession traditionally includes merry marching bands, inimitable Cape minstrels, drum majorettes and - the highlight of this harvest high jinks – a flotilla of bold and beautifully decorated tractors, trailer and trucks. Extreme Mountain Bike Challenge in the Attakwaskloof

The Fairview Attakwas Extreme Mountain Bike Challenge marks the entry into its second decade of existence with UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) status as South Africa’s premier single day mountain bike marathon gains international recognition. But the ancient landscapes which set the scene for the race which has developed a reputation as the “Hell of the South”, remain unchanged and unyielding.

Long before the tyres of mountain bikes first traversed the Attakwaskloof, the wheels of ox-wagons followed the footpaths of the Attaqua Khoi-Khoi and the Khoi San. Those first men to walk the wilderness of the Attakwaskloof surely followed the trails established by elephants and migrating herds of antelope, which crossed the Outeniqua Mountains from the interior to the fertile coastal plains where the grazing was more abundant. San rock art shows that the Attakwaskloof has a long history of conflict too.

Their art depicts scenes of great hunts and encounters with the first European visitors to the region. In later years the Boer War brought further conflict as the British built a string of block houses along the Outeniqua range to defend against incursions from the interior.

One such block house remains near the summit of the Attakwas Pass, overlooking the wagon trail through the valley below. It’s fitting then that the UCI status of the Fairview Attakwas Extreme Mountain Bike Challenge will once again attract a large European force into the Attakwaskloof. Though this time the battle will be fought in a war of stamina and attrition, where attacks will be countered until one rider finally breaks the will of the defenders and rides off to victory. The age old question remains then, will local knowledge be able to trump foreign desire to conquer Africa?

History both in terms of the Attakwaskloof and the Fairview Attakwas Extreme is not in favour of the local riders, it has been five years since Matthys Beukes, the last South African rider to win the race. Who then will lead the defence for the locals?

Will last year’s 3rd place finisher James Reid step up to the challenge? Or will one of the USN PureFit team of Darryn Lill and Waylon Woolcock look to lay down a challenge ahead of their Absa African Jersey defence at the Absa Cape Epic? Expect the true locals, Erik Kleinhans and Matthew Beers to lead the line as the battle for Fairview Attakwas Extreme Mountain Bike Challenge honours emerges from the historic Attakwaskloof and into the foothills of the Outeniqua where peace has long reigned but will surely be interrupted come 21 January 2017.
