The Western Cape has taken its place as a global big-hitter amongst tourists, with arrivals and infrastructure spend reaching record levels.
The City of Cape Town’s Transport and Urban Development Authority has published a draft Cycling Strategy which aims to increase the percentage of commuter trips made by bicycle from the current 1% to 8% by 2030, and has committed substantial resources over the past eight years to pursuing the vision of a cycling-friendly city. Currently cyclists have access to at least 450 km of cycle lanes across the city, some of which are separate from the road.
Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities, and Wesgro, the official tourism, trade and investment promotion agency for Cape Town and the Western Cape, revealed key facts on the state of the Western Cape’s tourism sector.
On City’s Draft Cycling Strategy
“Although some of these lanes are popular for recreational cycling, we still have not seen the growth in commuter cycling which is required to have a noticeable impact on traffic congestion, greenhouse gas emissions and to improve mobility in the lower-income areas.” “We evidently need a new approach, together with some key interventions from both the City and the private sector, to realise our goal to increase the percentage of commuter trips by bicycle to 8% within the next 13 years,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member: Transport and Urban Development Authority (TDA), Councillor Brett Herron.
Minister Winde said that the Western Cape has entered a exciting period in the tourism sector. Nine of out ten key attractions reported record visitor numbers for the 2016 peak season, and these increases speak to the emergence of the Western Cape as one of the world’s leading tourism destinations.

Cape Real Estate Outlook Is Good For Another Year of Growth “Not only does Cape-based property hold its value, it continues to offer superior growth as an asset,” says Mike Greeff, CEO of Greeff Christie’s International Real Estate. Propstats indicates that the total sales revenue across all areas of the Western Cape for all property types for the period November 2015 to November 2016 was R21,342,534,829, indicating a 3.3% increase on the revenue figure for the 12 months prior to that. “The average property selling price for all property types across all areas of the Cape grew by 12.6%, over the period indicated above, which demonstrates that Cape based real estate continues to outperform that in other areas of South Africa, and is, according to FNB Property Economist, John Loos, invariably the driving force behind national property price inflation figures,” says Greeff, whose own company has recorded a year-on-year growth in revenue of 41% to date for 2016.

“The highest growth sectors will continue to be security estates, sectional title apartments and family homes near leading schools, however, land is in short supply in the Cape, given the natural boundaries of mountain and sea, so even properties further and further from central areas are starting to grow in value,” adds Greeff.

“There’s a drive to get a foot in the door with regards Cape real estate, particularly with the steady flow of people from other provinces migrating to the Cape,” explains Greeff.
WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE WESTERN CAPE?
He says there has been significant growth in the average selling price measured for the period November 2015 to November 2016, when compared to the preceding corresponding twelve months, in all areas in which Greeff’s agents operate.

City Launches Water Ratings System To Promote Savings
The City of Cape Town has embarked on an initiative to encourage industry and companies to improve their water management practices by using a newly developed ratings tool. The City hosted an awards ceremony to recognise the 19 industries and companies that have participated in the assessment process and to hand over their certificates and star ratings. The companies that participated are: In2Foods, Total Garage, Sylko Plant Hire, Advanced Galvanising, Alibaba Foods, Coastal Casings, GlaxoSmithKline, Sonnendal Dairy, Peninsula Beverages, Capegate, NGK Ceramics, Plascon, Improchem, Biovac, Johnson & Johnson, Marley Roofing, Avis Budget, Groot Constantia and Southern Canned Products. The City’s Water and Sanitation Department appointed JG Afrika (Pty) Ltd to develop a ratings system to assess water management practices. First assessments undertaken by JG Afrika and the City’s inspectors evaluated a wide range of companies in this pilot phase – from multi-nationals to small businesses in sectors ranging from the food and beverage industry to industrial processes.
The Western Cape not only attracts locals, but many international visitors flock to the area to enjoy its scenic mountains, rivers, beaches, vineyards, floral kingdom, nature reserves and many more. Although tourism is the major attraction to the province, the line-up of cultural, sporting and other lifestyle events will once again be a major draw-card to the area in 2017.
FILM, THEATRE & DANCE Page 7
Bucket list events such as the CapeTown Cycle Tour and the ABSA Cape Epic are on the hot list for serious and adventure riders, while runners flock to the Old Mutual Two Oceans Ultra and Half Marathon - not to mention the many festivals, carnivals, parades, markets and conferences taking place in and around the Western Cape.

“These growth figures are significant and compare very favourably against most other investment categories, making property a prime choice for a healthy portfolio,” says Greeff, adding that the inclusion of Cape real estate in a portfolio offers buyers an opportunity to plan for a future with the confidence that there will be asset growth.

The most notable wins for Western Cape tourism include: The Visa rules were relaxed and Investor Centre launch set for the second half of 2017. In 2015/16 the Western Cape secured 30 conference bids, with an estimated economic impact of Wesgro that supported 35 events which attracted 100 000 visitors. The Foreign tourist numbers grew at 29.8% year-on-year in December; Some of the major attractions achieved growth of 19.8% between 2013 and 2016. The attractions include: Agulhas National Park, Bontebok National Park, Cango Caves, Tsitsikamma National Park, Wilderness National Park, Karoo National Park, Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, Robben Island, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, and Table Mountain National Park. Over the next three years, Cape Town International Airport will invest R331million into its new Domestic Arrivals terminal and R996 million for its International Terminal expansion. Last year, Marriott International, in partnership with Amdec, announced a R2 billion investment to develop three new properties here, while Tsogo Sun is currently adding 500 rooms to accommodation in Cape Town central through the opening of a R680 million hotel. The Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group has also invested significantly into the province. The group has launched the Radisson Red at the V&A Waterfront’s Silo District, and the Radisson Blu Hotel and Residence at the old Triangle House Building. In March, the Silo hotel will open at the V&A Waterfront. “The brand of Cape Town is growing tremendously, we can see that from the numbers.”

“Historically, repeat visitors explore other regions, outside of Cape Town, and these regions need to prepare themselves for the second wave of growth. To respond to these trends, we need to build our tourist asset base by increasing investment into new attractions.” “As government we are building three new attractions, namely the Cape Cycle network, the Madiba Legacy route and we have repackaged our food and wine offering across the province. We’re also rolling out our province-wide skills drive to ensure we offer quality service. Our job is to help every region to realise its full tourism potential.”

Cableway Welcomes Latest
Cape Yearling Sale
Millionth Visitor In Record Time
Earns Record Revenue
Table Mountain Cableway welcomed its 26 millionth visitor to the mountain, with the latest million visitors having taken a record-breaking 11 months to reach. On a busy morning at the Lower Station Ticket Office, Elbie Mattheus from Craddock, Eastern Cape stood unsuspecting as the numbers ticked closer to the million mark. Last year the TDA’s planning department conducted a status quo assessment of cycling in Cape Town. The research included surveys of cycling movements at 50 locations across the city, an assessment of the available cycle facilities, a review of incident data involving cyclists, and engagements with relevant stakeholders. The survey confirmed that more than 500 utility cyclists cycled to work in the morning peak period, and that the majority of residents cannot afford bicycles. The survey identifies five options to improve access to affordable bicycles, including employer programmes, whilst exploring the possibility of establishing a bicycle manufacturing plant in Cape Town that can build and provide low-cost bicycles. Furthermore, the research indicates the potential for increasing the uptake of utility cycling to work, schools, public services, shopping and social amenities across all income groups for trips of 15 km or less. Other key strategies identified in the draft are as follows: road safety (traffic) and personal security (crime prevention) along cycling routes must be improved, planning, design and provision of cycling lanes must be location-specific, and cycling infrastructure such as cycle lanes, bicycle parking facilities, and storage facilities must be maintained. The Cycling Strategy proposes that cycle routes must be safe, secure, direct routes should avoid detours, comfortable and well maintained, provide a comfortable non-slip riding surface, have gentle curves and flat gradients where possible, and the routes must be attractive to complement their surroundings and contribute to a positive cycling experience. Central to the debate is the need for motorists to accept cycling as a legitimate mode of transport. Residents and interested and affected parties will have the opportunity to submit comments, input or recommendations on the draft Cycling Strategy on www.capetown.gov.za/haveyoursay until 21 February 2017.

BRITISH AIRWAYS NAMES TOP SIX DESTINATIONS FOR 2017 British Airways has named its six top destinations for South African travellers in 2017 and its January sale is making it easier to get there. Unsurprisingly London tops the list. A perennial favourite for South Africans from gap-year students to parents on S.K.I. (Spend the Kids Inheritance) holidays, the UK capital has everything to offer from the finesse of the Chelsea Flower Show to the fervour of the FA Cup Final.
Across the Atlantic New York remains top of the pops. As well as iconic attractions such as the Statue of Liberty, the atmosphere of a Knicks game or arguably the best retail therapy in the world during the spring sales, for a city with such a big brash reputation, there’s also an urbane side to New York. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the city’s largest and most visited attractions, where it’s easy to spend a day and not even scratch the surface of the extensive collection. Other must-sees for art lovers are the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Photo: Tower Bridge - London,UK
Sport, culture and history are certainly among the reasons to visit London and a British Airways 2016 survey of 4 000 travellers found that South Africans are more familiar with UK sport and history than their European counterparts. With a choice of A380 services from Johannesburg and an extended summer schedule from Cape Town there are plenty of flights to choose from. “With up to 30 flights a week, we’re offering more seats to London from South Africa than we ever have before,” says Sue Petrie, commercial manager for Southern Africa. “These include 10 weekly A380 services from Johannesburg and three weekly flights between Cape Town and Gatwick. There are up to 16 flights a week to Heathrow and Gatwick from Cape Town and double daily services from Johannesburg.” A short hop across the channel the romance, cuisine and sophistication of Paris remain as alluring as ever, not to mention Les Soldes – the regulated sales that start at major department stores and boutique shops on 11 January.
Photo: Eiffel Tower - Paris, France
For the more musically Photo: City Skyline - New York, USA inclined Carnegie Hall is going off-site this season with a new production of West Side Story set in a restored factory in Queens. The show runs from 4 – 6 March. The Lincoln Center’s Columbus Circle base is headlining jazz at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and is hosting late-night sessions with up-and-coming artists. On the West Coast, Los Angeles is still the critic’s favourite, no doubt due to the burgeoning film business on the red-carpet route between Cape Town and LA. For anyone wanting to combine a bit of real-world Big Bang science with a large dollop of entertainment, the Science Behind Pixar Exhibition at the California Science Centre runs until 16 April. If West Coast pop culture is more your thing, then you can catch Hey! Ho! Let’s Go: The Ramones and the Birth of Punk at the Grammy Museum every Saturday and Sunday until 28 February. Alternatively Pop Art for the People: Roy Lichtenstein in LA is on at the Skirball Cultural Center every Saturday and Sunday until 12 March.
If it’s more chic 2017 rather than discounted 2016 that you’re into, then time your trip to be there between 22 and 26 January for Paris Fashion Week.
And who could resist Paris in the spring and summer, particularly as the southern hemisphere starts slipping into winter? Naturally there’s plenty to see and do, a soupçon of which includes the French Open at Roland-Garros from May 22 to June 11; the Taste of Paris, which brings together top restaurants, food and wine producers from 18 to 21 May; and the Jazz Festival À Saint-Germain-Des-Prés, offering performances in the heart of the city between 11 and 22 May. The Eternal City remains an eternal favourite and it’s not hard to understand why. Where else but Rome does a modern European city blend so seamlessly with centuries of history and culture? Add to this the irrepressible Romans – the inventors of la dolce vita – and you have the potential for a rock concert in a museum. It’s nothing new, the ancient Romans had 150 days a year set aside for fun and festivities. Perhaps the best way to experience this is during Natale di Roma on 21 April, when citizens celebrate their city’s birthday.
Photo: Downtown - Los Angeles, USA
This year for the first time New Orleans has made the list and visiting early in the year it’s easy to see why. The Mardi Gras parades start in January but run until Fat Tuesday or 28 February. The brightly festooned Mardi Gras floats carry krewe royalty and celebrities, while masked participants lead marching bands and riders on horseback through the streets. Of course, even if you miss Mardi Gras there’s still plenty to see and do in New Orleans, particularly in the historic French Quarter which offers visitors an abundance of restaurants, music clubs and shopping, all contained in an intimate neighbourhood.
Most of the festivities take place at the Campidogilo. As you’d expect from a city founded in 753 BC the Romans have had plenty of practice and mark the occasion by firing off huge numbers of fireworks.
Photo: Trevi Fountain - Rome, Italy
May Day is a more modern holiday, but celebrated with the same gusto, when trades unions organise a free concert in front of the basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano. Yep, it’s pretty much a rock concert in a museum.
In fact there’s so much that happens in Rome throughout the year, you’re unlikely to be there when there isn’t something on. Even so, there’s so much to see and experience you’ll probably want to go back again, even if you didn’t throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain.

Fairview Introduces
New Way Of Eating Lunch
With a lineage of great entrepreneurs, innovators and winemakers, it’s no wonder that Fairview constantly finds itself at the forefront of the wine and cheese industry. Now, 35 years after its famous Goat Tower was first built, this is still the case, with the introduction of a new landmark attraction – South Africa’s first skywalk and activity playpark for goats.
A new lunch revolution is about to take a grip on Cape Town businesses. Imagine having dishes such as Parmesan chicken fingers on green beans and roasted baby tomato served on basil infused zucchini noodles; or Beef and parsley mini koftas on a colourful quinoa and veggie tabbouleh drizzled with mint and lemon yoghurt delivered straight to your desk every day.
SA's First Skywalk And Playpark For Its Goats

The Woodstock deli FOODwelove has now created a range of affordable meals that are not only delicious but also balanced, healthy and free from preservatives, artificial additives and refined sugar. All meals are produced fresh daily. FOODwelove is not only spearheading a fabulously enjoyable way of eating lunch in the office, but it is also appealing to contemporary Cape Town based businesses who see the value in having happy, healthy staff. Using only high quality, locally sourced ingredients, the ever-evolving FOODwelove menu changes weekly and ensures all palates are catered for – from calorie counters to vegans, from chicken fans to carb loaders.
“They constantly innovate every single aspect of the customer experience, which has led to their success,” says international wine tourism consultant, Peter McAtamney, an international guest speaker at the recent The Business of Wine and Food Tourism Conference held in Cape Town in November 2016. McAtamney’s statement is supported by Fairtrade-accredited wines that have pioneered new varieties in South Africa, exceptional cheese an award-winning deli, a country-style restaurant, and an unforgettable, fairy tale-like Goat Tower - all of which are part of what makes a visit to the much-loved Fairview farm a world-class experience. The Fairview Goat Tower was built in 1981 when Charles Back and his team realised how much the goats loved to climb on top of things. Adored by children and adults alike, the legendary tower has become a visual icon of the Cape Winelands and symbolic of Fairview’s commitment to creating a welcoming environment for all visitors. But now, the most important members of the farm, Fairview’s goats, have been given a bigger and more exciting playground to explore – a lush green paddock situated adjacent to the tower. A brand new skywalk bridge has also been built, which will take the goats from the Goat Tower, across the path to the other side of the garden, where their newly built paddock welcomes them. “During kidding season this year, we decided to bring the goat kids up next to the Tasting Room to give our visitors a chance to interact with our beloved farm mascots,” says Charles Back. “We received such an overwhelmingly positive response that, we created a large paddock for the kids to take up permanent residence right next to our Goat Tower,” adds Back. Members of the public are encouraged to visit the Fairview farm and experience the new Skywalk Bridge and paddock. Guests can watch the baby kid goats as they take turns on a “goat see-saw”, balance on a “surfboard” and climb and play on a number of other obstacles. This bigger and fun-filled playground is perfect not just for Fairview’s precious goats, but the whole family, too. For more information visit www.fairview.co.za

Where were you during Brandy Alexander Day 2017? With numerous public holidays and commemorative days dotted throughout the year, it can be difficult to remember the really important ones to celebrate. Every year on January 31, otherwise known as Brandy Alexander Day, those with a bibulous bend should raise their Brandy Alexander’s in a toast to the only cocktail to have a day officially named in its honour. There is little consensus on the origins of Brandy Alexander. Popular opinion leans to the first appearance of this decadent cocktail being at the wedding reception of Princess Mary and Viscount Lascelles in London in 1922. However, the Russian Tsar, Alexander II thought otherwise, believing that the cocktail was named after him, while a famous opera critic of the time, Alexander Dragon was convinced that the drink was named in his honour. Regardless of its origin, we do know that that the Brandy Alexander was developed from an earlier cocktail simply called the Alexander which used gin instead of brandy. The Brandy Alexander is slightly smoother and sweeter than the ginsoaked original and went on to claim international fame and favour on cocktail list in the swankiest bars and clubs. The cocktail proved very popular in pre and post war England and made a resurgence in the USA during the 1970’s, becoming somewhat of a cultural icon, with numerous endorsements in songs, books, film and television. What better way to celebrate than to prepare your Brandy Alexander with friends or family.
This relatively simple cocktail is a concoction of 1 part brandy, 1 part chocolate liqueur and one part cream, garnished with a dusting of nutmeg. And for a decadent dessert, just add a scoop of vanilla or chocolate ice cream and transfer to a bowl.

Young Entrepreneurs 'Spitbraai' Their Way To Success
With the success of the basting sauce their next objective was to produce the sauce on a bigger scale. Since 2016 they have expanded the sauce production, and presently supply their products to various outlets in the Western Cape. Products in the sauce range includes: Blitz Braais Sticky Sauce, Blitz Braais Braai Spice, and Blitz Braais Salt and Pepper Mix. The philosophy of Blitz Braais is, “It’s not a braai without Blitz Braais” For more information call 082 934 4662, email: info@blitzbraais.co.za or visit www.blitzbraais.co.za
Discontinuation of Rock Lobster The spitbraai company, Blitz Braais was started in 2014 and is owned by Raymond du Preez and his sister, Yvette. The secret to their success was developed by the passion of their hard-working team. Blitz Braais’s vision from the start was to provide their clients the best possible service, yet to remain affordable - making it possible for everyone to share the love of a traditional South African spitbraai. Blitz Braais is situated in the Helderberg, and operates within a ±100km radius from base. In 2016 they also opened a Blitz Braais DIY branch in Table View, which focus specifically on equipment hiring in the surrounding areas. Blitz Braais cater for birthdays, baby dedications, weddings, and corporate events, just to name a few. Their equipment is userfriendly, and the team will demonstrate all you need to know! Many first-time spit braaiers have since become a spit braai fundi for their family and friends. In the past years, Blitz Braais achieved great success in preparing spitbraai events for their clients. “We were privileged to do spitbraais for childhood sporting heroes, such as Herschelle Gibbs, Robin Peterson, Pieter-Steph Du Toit, and his family, as well most recently, the DHL Stormers Rugby Team’s 2016-year-end function,” says Raymond. Blitz Braais basting sauce has become the center of success in their brand. Their special basting sauce started out in their kitchen and has developed into becoming a hit among their clients.
At Cape Point
The Two Oceans Restaurant, situated at the foot of Cape Point within Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) is a world class restaurant often attracting locals and tourists daily. The restaurant is also however a voluntary member of the WWF Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) whom recently listed the West Coast Rock Lobster (WCRL) as redlisted meaning part of an unsustainable population. SASSI drives change in the local seafood industry by working with suppliers and sellers of seafood, as well as informing and inspiring consumers to make sustainable seafood choices. The easy-to-use ‘traffic light’ system tells you which seafood can be eaten with a clear conscience (Green list), which seafood you should think twice about (Orange list) and which seafood should be avoided altogether because it is either considered unsustainable or illegal to sell in South Africa (Red list). West Coast Rock Lobster (a.k.a. Crayfish) has recently been red-listed.
As a result of this listing, Two Oceans Restaurant has since depleted all holding stocks of West Coast Rock Lobster and will no longer sell this species in the restaurant until such time as the population recovers. The park has also been informed by SASSI that there is less than 2% of the of WCRL remaining which is a huge concern to all. SANParks TMNP supports this initiative wholeheartedly in the spirit of conservation.

No-Address Delivery Solution: Deliver 2 Me Here’s something that sucks: being stuck in one place while you wait for your order to be delivered any time between 09h00 and 17h00. You can’t leave, and you can’t call or track your delivery guy to find out where he is. Why is that? Because when it comes down to it, every other delivery service is delivering to addresses on a map, not to people. That’s why WumDrop created Deliver 2 Me, the world’s first delivery solution that delivers to the real time location of your mobile phone, giving you the power to choose the hour that you’d like your order delivered, at the exact location that you happen to be at, regardless of whether or not that location has a street address. You left the office and went to the beach? Deliver 2 Me. You had the sudden urge to hike up Table Mountain? Deliver 2 Me. You really have to get to the airport, but you also really need your parcel? Available to retailers via integration with WumDrop’s API, Deliver 2 Me represents a significant leap forward in business-to-customer delivery, particularly across Africa, where address data can be highly unreliable. “What makes this technology remarkable is its scalability. Deliver 2 Me isn’t locked into a native mobile app like most geolocation services - it leverages the increasingly powerful suite of features found in mobile browsers to deliver an accurate delivery location to the driver, and a clean, easy to use interface to the end user.” – Wilson Canda, WumDrop CTO. How it works - Place your order, and choose the Deliver 2 Me option. When your parcel is ready for delivery, you’ll receive an SMS with a link to the Deliver 2 Me mobile web app. You can either choose “deliver now” or “deliver later”. Choosing Deliver now will allow you to drop a pin or type in a specific location.

Choosing Deliver later will allow you to choose another time or day when you’d prefer us to SMS you to kick off the Deliver now step above. Feel free to change your location while we’re delivering to you, life happens. If you do, we will automatically prompt you to drop a pin at your new location. We’ll change course, find you, get your autograph, and make you smile. Never worry about missing another delivery, ever again. Traction - Deliver 2 Me is available exclusively through the TFG eMall (www.tfg.co.za) for the launch of the product. “We’re honoured to be partnering with TFG for the launch of Deliver 2 Me. 7 Reasons to secure a Plan B in Europe The opportunity to acquire permanent residency or a 2nd citizenship to formalise a ‘Plan B’ to leave a legacy for their family is very appealing to many people. And Europe - the largest single market & global trading block in the world - still holds huge appeal. Investing in Europe to try and hedge against our volatile currency is a sensible decision - but the choice of where to invest can be intimidating. The financial, legal and tax implications coupled with language & cultural barriers sometimes makes even thinking about a “Plan B” a non-starter. Going overseas on holiday can endear that country to you: it’s easy to fall in love with the charming customs and romantic foreign language. But investing offshore can often expose a very different picture – especially if it becomes difficult to be accepted into the local community, if you are always seen as a foreigner and you don’t quite feel like you fit in.
Some other attractions that Cyprus offers are: a. being an ex-British colony, there is no language barrier – everyone speaks English b. you can rent out your property to earn a Euro-based income; c. low cost of living; d. Euro-accredited education gives your children a distinct advantage when they enter the global job market; e. Europe on your doorstep: Cyprus has 2 International Airports and several marinas; f. 1st world medical facilities & affordable healthcare with highly qualified doctors & specialists.
Savvy investors should ensure they make the right decision to secure a “Plan B” in Europe especially with some counties offering the chance to secure relatively easy permanent residency status or a 2nd passport. You are advised to closely evaluate each programme to understand the pre-requisites, limitations and of course all of the costs. Cyprus is a very popular choice not only because of the affordable investment entry-level to secure residency, but also because of the following 7 benefits: 1. Cyprus is economically stable and politically secure – the country is not flooded with refugees. 2. 3 generations in the same family (including parents and in-laws) secure permanent residency status FOR LIFE in 4 – 6 weeks through the purchase of a single property. 3. The whole family can get EU passports in 3 months via Cyprus’ “Citizenship through Investment” programme – and dependent children up to 28 years of age also qualify! This is the quickest way to get unlimited access to Europe for life! 4. Properties in Cyprus offer excellent value for money when compared to other European countries – especially homes right on or near to The Med. The lush & beautiful Western side of the country is similar to the Western Cape and enjoys the biggest demand and highest growth. 5. The lifestyle is similar to South Africa: the golf courses are world-class, the countryside is breathtakingly beautiful and Cyprus has 57 blue-flag status beaches, the cleanest seas in the Med and a mountain-range where it snows for 3 months. 6. No inheritance tax: on your death you can dispose of your assets to your loved LOGO ones without having to pay any tax. This is advantageous for legacy planning.
Your approach to your investment decision will be determined on how clear you are on the reason you want a Plan B in Europe. Is the driver to acquire residency or a 2nd citizenship, to relocate and create a home for a growing family or invest in a property to earn a subsidiary income? Investing overseas is a huge financial and emotional commitment, but your offshore journey can be made easier when you get advice from professionals. Always check exactly what you are buying before signing any contracts; and take your time – there will always be a good deal to be had. Going across on an inspection trip to personally view the property opportunities and do the groundwork could save you thousands in the long run! Cypriot Realty is a pioneer in actively and consistently promoting property opportunities primarily in Cyprus. They have successfully been doing this from their Cape Town and Sandton offices since 2008. As a result, the company is recognised and respected as Southern Africa’s authoritative investment specialist for promoting Cyprus as an ideal destination for acquiring permanent residency/citizenship, property investment, immigration/retirement and starting a European-based business.

Cape Town Carnival Yields Riches, Real And Social on March 18
Experience In Cape Town
The Seven-year-old event is pulling in the crowds and pushing up the numbers for those in need – Over the past seven years the Cape Town Carnival has established strong roots in 54 diverse community groups across the Western Cape.
Open Streets Day Cape Town was celebrated on Sunday 15 January 2017, when Bree Street and the section of Longmarket Street, between Bree and Adderley Streets were closed for traffic - an estimated 15 000 to 20 000 people experienced a partially car-free CBD.
Many months of preparation and hard work go into the final parade of fireworks, music, dance and larger-than-life floats. The event shines a light on the Mother City and the talent and the creativity of its people, giving the different community groups an opportunity to strut their stuff on this unique stage, exposing carnival-goers to new and exciting performers.
The aim of Open Streets is to inspire the public to explore more of the city centre on foot or by bike with a range of other activities including skating, cricket, dancing, singing and performing, and playing Scrabble and other games in the street.
One of the community groups that participates in the Cape Town Carnival is the Western Province Marching Band. “The Cape Town Carnival is a great way for the marching band to interact with and be exposed to other cultures and communities in the province,” says Saeed Ruiters, group president of the band. The Western Province Marching Band was one of three groups that in 2016 shared the annual cash prize offered to the carnival’s top performers, with judges giving points for professionalism, precision, performance and passion. The other two were Steenberg High School and Lavender Hill High School. Cape Town Carnival CEO Jay Douwes says that job creation is a key priority for the Cape Town Carnival. In 2016 the Cape Town Carnival created over 400 direct jobs and a further 514 work opportunities, of which over 60% were aimed at our youth. “Giving the youth purpose and a cause to be part of a team is vital in motivating them,” says Douwes. “The job opportunities cover an array of skill sets and diverse fields such as metalwork, pattern-making and event planning, with training opportunities provided in costume, float design and set building.” The Cape Town Carnival also encourages and supports small businesses and entrepreneurs by enlisting them to install event branding, doing photography and conducting surveys on the event day. M-Net is a sponsor of the event, and several of the company’s interns from its Magic in Motion Film & TV Academy are working on the Cape Town Carnival 2017 production. CEO Yolisa Phahle says, “M-Net’s continued investment in skills development and enterprise development in South Africa is what I believe will drive our economy in the future.”

The Open Streets experience included Bree Street and a section of vehicular traffic in Longmarket Street connecting Bo-Kaap with District Six via the CBD, passing through several neighbourhoods, including the East City, it shows a cross section of Cape Town life, and those who were fit enough could walk all the way to the top on Signal Hill, while enjoying the views over the city and Table Bay. From Longmarket Street it was easy to get to Adderley and Long streets. The former, Cape Town’s “main street”, had a dedicated cycle lane connected to the Company’s Garden. The Pedal Power Association, the Bicycling Empowerment Network, Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy and Up Cycles also joined forces with OSCT. This initiative included a safe cycling school, free bike rides for children, bicycle parking, bike rentals and a bike bus. “Open Streets City Centre was everything we expected: from positive interaction on the street to amazing weather! As Councillor Brett Herron outlined during his speech at the opening ceremony, City of Cape Town wants to see this programme transition into a new phase where longer stretches of street enable people to move from A to B in non-motorised transport while connecting different communities,” says Marcela Guerrero Casas, Co-founder & Managing Director.
“The City of Cape Town is another sponsor, and councillor Eddie Andrews, Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Economic Development, says that events like these boost the local economy and create economic opportunities for residents. “Our support forms part of our efforts to foster unity within our communities and to position Cape Town as the events capital of Africa. As part of a commitment to the development of the community groups, the Cape Town Carnival will see more than 50 groups from communities and schools teamed up with some of the leading choreographers and music coordinators in the industry,” he says. Other sponsors include: The National Department of Arts and Culture, DStv, the Western Cape Government, Tsogo Sun, Media24 and Kfm.
“We were particularly glad to see active citizenship in action with the myriad of collaborators who brought positive, healthy, and interactive fun to the street. All of them contributed on a voluntary basis which highlights the power of creating an open platform. This in addition to the many volunteers who helped us run the day motivates us to continue growing the Open Streets movement in Cape Town,” she adds. OSCT has organised several Open Streets Days in Cape Town since 2013 and in 2016 partnered with the WWF Nedbank Green Trust to help create a new mindset about movement on city streets. This is an exciting development as OSCT continue to explore the potential of our streets and the power of experiential learning in promoting sustainable transportation. There are several permanently pedestrianised thoroughfares in the city centre, including St Georges Mall and Waterkant Street. The municipality began closing the mall to vehicular traffic in the late 1980s and Waterkant Street. Today, these are popular lunchtime meeting spots that showcase the value of public space.

ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE

SOUND ENERGY - MEDICINE OF THE FUTURE FREQUENCIES: those mysterious unseen elements present in every entity – be it human, animal, plant or rock...No exception. Even deep space reverberates with the “songs” emitted by the planets and stars!
Example: Article headlined by Robert Mc Kie, Science Editor, “The Guardian”, 31 October 2015: “High power sound waves used to blast cancer cells” confirms that the medical field is starting to appreciate this astounding source of healing. This is just 1 of countless similar findings all over the world.” Examples for further research: https://goo.gl/1gMSyg https://goo.gl/6EhWYC The Good News! This Therapy is available in Gordon’s Bay at SOUNDWAVES HEALTH CLINIC (SHC), where you can be scanned and treated with truly front-line technology. The “Foundational Scan” checks your skeletal system, nervous system, vascular system, etc. including every organ – and much more! You may ask: what about a “pap smear”; “mammogram”; or prostate check-up? ALL done with frequencies, with NO invasion of the body. This particular 3D Scanner is statistically recognized as one of the most accurate systems for early detection…fundamental to any life-threatening disease. Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is the latest addition to SHC’s treatment arsenal, offering a unique advantage by combining the 2 types of therapy.
Photo: Charl analyzing scan results
Let’s see what Frequencies (aka sound) can do:
Cold Laser (LLLT) applies non-thermal light photons to accelerate the body’s natural healing processes.
1. It can modify DNA, as proven by Russian biophysicist Piotr Garjajev in 2011 2. levitate objects 3. boil water, as demonstrated by Peter Davey with his “sonic boiler”¹ 4. create light 5. move faster than light² 6. kill viruses and parasites 7. destroy tumours ¹ www.rexresearch.com/davey/davey.htm ² Scientists demonstrated in 2007 that sound pulses can travel at velocities faster than the speed of light –www.LiveScience.com) Giant technological strides since the mid-20th century have enabled the harnessing of these marvels in a variety of fields – including Frequency Medicine (also known as Bio-resonance/Energy Medicine).
Photo Left - Right: Skeleton scan emphasis on the hand & LLLT Treatment for Arthritis
Besides its cosmetic advantages, it’s especially useful for pain, joint and neurological problems, wounds and burns, dental issues, lymph node swelling, bone/tissue regeneration, plus many more applications. The therapeutic uses of Cold Laser are backed by numerous medical studies. (Various videos on YouTube, search for LLLT)
This has provided a healthy, non-invasive, non-artificial alternative to conventional (chemical) medicine - based on the ONE inherent characteristic present in all objects: “RESONANT FREQUENCY” i.e. the frequency at which an object vibrates.
Charl de Villiers, Therapist in Bio resonance Medicine, has a proven track record in this field ranging over the past 2 decades. What started out as a hobby many years ago has become a fullblown passion.
The frequencies at which viruses/bacteria become deactivated have been mathematically determined many decades ago. This means medical conditions can be treated by pulsing specific frequencies (sound waves) into the body, to trace and destroy microbes or any other pathogen – including tumours.
He keeps abreast of new developments by continual study and is steadily working his way toward a Doctorate in Energy Medicine and Bio Resonance. Sharing his vision and enthusiasm, his wife (and co-owner) Anne-Marie sees to the smooth running of their daily schedule.
This offers hope for healing in a world where viruses/bacteria are mutating faster than new antibiotics can be developed.
They feel truly blessed, being able to offer real hope to so many people.
Photo: Anne-Marie demonstrating the 3D NLS system with specially designed headphones to measure frequencies released by the brain
The extensive range of conditions and diseases treated successfully with sound waves includes emotional issues, i.e. depression and many more. This demonstrates the inextricable bond between body and mind – the one always influences the other. Can this type of therapy treat cancer? The answer is a resounding YES! Across the world, frequencies have proven extremely effective in the fight against cancer. The secret of its success? Frequencies are able to kill the stem cell of a cancer cell: no radiation, no chemicals, no scars, no hair loss, no side effects at all! (Of course this does NOT preclude life-saving surgery when necessary.) Today, more and more doctors and scientists are growing excited about the seemingly inexhaustible possibilities of harnessing sound waves to improve human and animal life.

As Charl likes to say: “You need sound information (pun intended!) to help you deal with your personal health choices”. A visit to their colourful rooms on the Gordon’s Bay beach front could certainly revitalize you – in more ways than one!

Kirstenbosch Garden Centre Guide
Southern African Wildlife College Trust
For Buying Plants
Winner of Emirates ‘A Greener Tomorrow’ Initiative Emirates has selected three not-for-profit organisations working in wildlife protection and environmental conservation in Africa as the recipients of award funding under its ‘A Greener Tomorrow’ initiative. The winners, Southern African Wildlife College Trust, Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds, and African Parks, were selected from a global pool of applicants working towards environmental sustainability and conservation in their respective regions. Launched in 2013, ‘A Greener Tomorrow’ is an outcome of Emirates’ commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation globally. The programme provides a share of up to US$150,000 in funding to non-profit organisations across the world working innovatively to safeguard and improve their local environments.
The Western Cape’s dams were at 40.4% on 23 January 2017, and if consumers continue to use water at the same rate, only water for 12 weeks are left before the dam levels are too low for water to be extracted. The City of Cape Town’s Council approved the implementation of tougher water restrictions from 1 February 2017. Among others, the use of potable water for non-essential use will be further restricted.
The funds for the initiative are raised through internal recycling programmes within the Emirates Group that process materials ranging from paper from Emirates’ offices to seat components on board aircraft. Following the overwhelming response received for the initiative in its first year, Emirates decided to continue the programme for a second time in 2016. The Southern African Wildlife College was established in 1996 by the World Wide Fund for Nature, South Africa (WWF SA) in close cooperation with national and provincial government departments, and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Kirstenbosch Garden Centre have the following advise to those who want to buy plants: They encourage customers to take a look at succulents - the most waterwise group of our indigenous plants. Succulents can be attractive and colourful even without flowers, especially when planted in mass, and they often have fascinating forms. Take a walk around your garden and look at which plants are the thirstiest. Think about whether you could let them go, in the interests of saving water. Try to save your trees, but shrubs and smaller plants can usually be replaced if they die. Take cuttings from your favourite plants, which you can keep under a plastic or glass cover in the shade to keep them from drying out. Lawns can be allowed to go brown - they are very likely to green up when the rain falls. Refrain from fertilising your plants now, as that will make them put out soft new growth, which is even thirstier than the mature growth. Use shadecloth to keep precious plants from drying out as quickly. Although it’s a difficult time for those of us who love gardening, it’s providing us with a wonderful lesson in creating a garden that will thrive in the prevailing climate. For too long we have had the luxury of manipulating the amount of “rainfall” our gardens receive - now we have an opportunity to start over, and work with our natural surroundings.
To date the College has trained close on 15,000 students from 46 countries in natural resource management and conservation practices. Through funding from Emirates’ ‘A Greener Tomorrow’ initiative, SAWCT - the Trust set up by WWF SA in support of the College - will provide three scholarships and two bursaries for their certificate programmes in nature conservation to students who already work in the conservation arena but who do not have formal education to advance their careers. These qualifications will help students move into roles such as wildlife area managers, park rangers and senior field rangers, working to protect wildlife and biodiversity within southern Africa.
Turn Your Tyre Waste Into Worth This Year! Remember to refrain from planting edible plants in tyres, since leaching of harmful chemical may occur. #3 – Tyre Pet Bed Your furry friends will love this. By simply adding a cushioned base and soft inner lining, your pets can snuggle up in their tyre bed. #4 – Traditional Tyre Swing If the junk in your yard is piling up, use this New Year to turn your waste into something worthwhile. One of the biggest recycling frustrations is old and unused tyres. Disposing of tyres – regardless of the method - may result in a host of health and safety risks. Stay on the safe side and give your old tyres new life! With these five easy repurposing projects from REDISA, the whole family can get involved. #1 – Tyre Table With a simple glass top, you could create a great tyre table. Simply adding and removing tyres can adjust the height, and the durable materials ensures a long lasting creation. #2 – Tyre Plant Holder A fresh coat of paint can transform your tyres and turn them into the perfect plant holder. You could choose to stack your plant holders on your patio, or embed them in your garden. If you’d like to add some flare, you could even hang your new plant holder along your garden wall.
Get the kids outdoors this summer with a new tyre swing. A strong rope or chain can be attached to the tyre and hung from any sturdy tree in your garden. If you have more than one tyre, you could create a swing set and arrange them throughout your yard. #5 – Tyre stool Why stop with a tyre table? You could also use your old tyres to create great outdoor stools. Stack the tyres according to your desired height, add a soft cushion, sit back and enjoy. 9 TIPS FOR SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS PURCHASING A PC 1. Define the role and select the right solution set for the job - As a small business, you have created roles within your organisation. You should define and understand the work required of each role. This will enable you to select the most appropriate ecosystem for optimal employee productivity. Knowing how employees will use their PCs determines whether performance, mobility, battery life or display quality is most important. A desk-bound engineer designing a next generation product will require more computing power than a traveling salesperson. Based on role-specific priorities, you will choose from a wide variety of devices, including notebooks, desktops, 2-in-1s or tablets. The same process applies when choosing a processor - PCs containing entry-level processors will perform just fine for general office duties such as responding to emails, drafting documents and generating presentations. As the performance demands increase, so does the need for a higher end PC containing more advanced components.
4. Take advantage of all that Windows 10 has to offer - PCs based on Windows 10 provide significant feature advancements and enable small businesses to easily manage and secure devices and data in a mobile-first, cloud-connected world. Windows 10 runs on all device types, works beautifully with Office 365 and automatically stores files in the cloud so co-workers can collaborate on documents wherever and whenever. 5. Prioritise security - As a small business, security is a crucial element of your IT ecosystem. Windows 10 Pro delivers enterprise-grade security for organisations of all sizes and offers compelling tools to take advantage of the latest hardware innovation to combat cyber threats. If a Windows 10 Pro device or USB drive is lost or stolen, BitLocker and BitLocker-to-Go put everything on lockdown so no one else can access systems or data. For another layer of security, strategic partners such as Dell offer data protection packages that encrypt each individual file so all information is protected no matter where it goes. In a small business, top-notch security can go a long way in saving unwanted costs and compliance fees down the line. 6. Understand the importance of manageability - Your business may be small today, but if growth is on the horizon, you may find yourself managing 50, 100 or even 1000 employees. Manually updating a few PCs may seem like a manageable task while your business is small, but will be a headache if it comes to manually updating hundreds of disparate devices. Keeping manageability in mind early on will help you scale with ease.
2. Keep docks and monitors in mind - Because modularity is becoming a crucial factor in the evolution of the workplace, you should consider the need for versatile and powerful docking systems. This can be especially important within small businesses, where resources are tight and IT equipment might be slim. A notebook combined with a dock that instantly connects to a monitor, keyboard and mouse will enhance productivity. 3. Provide options for user types based on device - Today, thin and light notebooks and 2-in-1s make being mobile and getting work done even easier. To realise the business benefits of a mobility strategy, small businesses should understand the work different employees are doing, where they are doing it and identify the best combination of devices to meet their needs.
VODACOM LAUNCHES FREE
7. Recognise the benefits of good service - As a small business, you may not have the luxury of your own IT department. This creates convenience, logistical, and potentially critical challenges due to lack of immediate in-person support. The importance of having reliable external service is crucial. When building a PC infrastructure, consider the service capabilities offered by their IT provider – alongside cost, offerings, reliability and reputation. 8. By driving a segmented customer approach, we will be able to better cater for and develop more personalised and needs based products and services for all of our customers. Our focus is about giving our customers what they want at affordable prices”, adds Nyimpini. TRAVEL THROUGH TIME AT THE SAADA EXPO CAPE TOWN Now an annual highlight on Capetonians’ events’ calendars, SAADA once again invites guests to travel through time at its upcoming expo. Showcasing the best of South African Antiques, Art and Design, every year SAADA aims to exceed the expectations of the years gone by. The expo will take place from 17-19 February 2017, with the highly anticipated gala evening opening the festivities on the night of 16 February, at The Lookout, V&A Waterfront, Granger Bay. “The SAADA expo is a fully vetted showcase of the best in South African antiques, art and design, except this year, the event will be a little bigger, and a lot sexier,” says SAADA CEO, Paul Mrkusic. Working with the theme of ‘Time Travel’, guests will feel like they are being transported through various decades via the design and antiques showcased. “In today’s world of immediacy it’s easy to think that design just pertains to the ‘here and now’ – almost as though it just fell out of the sky. Sometimes that’s as much attention as we give it before moving on to look at, tweet and share the next brilliant thing that crosses our path or catches our eye. It’s easy to forget that everything that surrounds us is not so fashion-forward as to have no past, but that each and every edgy innovation we see and experience has had an enormous amount of time and thought and intellectual exploration and experimentation put into it,” Mrkusic continues. What sets the SAADA Expo apart is that, quite simply, there is nothing else like it. “Unlike other events, that focus on a singular contemporary, innately transient
moment, our annual expos are a boutique-style celebration of the vast history of design – past, present and future – and not simply a contemporary moment thereof. This assures the extraordinary variety of exhibits: each unique item on show tells its own story, while at the same time it is a piece in the great and glorious puzzle of design through time,” explains Mrkusic. heart transplantee to take on 2 of SA’s premier events Elmar Sprink (45), a heart transplantee from Köln (Germany) will be seen in action at two of South Africa’s premier outdoor sporting events: the Sanlam Cape Mile and the Fedhealth XTERRA in Grabouw on Sunday, 19 February and Saturday, 25 February respectively, this in the year that marks the 50th anniversary of the first human-to-human heart transplant operation. According to Sprink, after his heart transplant in June 2012, he had to once again learn how to sit, stand up and walk. “After having spent half a year in bed, I found that swimming was the perfect way to start training my muscles again. In January 2013 I started to jog, but only 700m at a time. It was then that I decided to return to triathlon racing as an attempt to create awareness around organ donation in Germany. My highlights are having taken part in Ironman Hawaii in 2014 and the Transalpine Run in 2016.” “Partaking in sport helps to minimise the side effects of the medication that heart transplantees have to take,” continues Sprink. “In my case it also helps a lot from a psychological aspect. The Sanlam Cape Mile will be a good test before the Fedhealth XTERRA Grabouw which is a nice combination of swimming, mountain biking and trail running. As with all the other events that I have participated in with my new heart, my goal for both the Cape Mile and XTERRA will be to have fun and cross the finish line.” “I am really looking forward to being in South Africa, enjoying the land and meeting new people.” For more information visit www.stillwatersports.com
