The City of Cape Town has been ranked as one of the top five cities in the world out of 533 cities for demonstrating leadership in our climate disclosure where we measure and disclose our energy and climate action data annually to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).

This achievement saw Cape Town joining over 500 cities, 100 state and regional governments, and 5 800 companies who are now measuring and disclosing climate action data on an annual basis in order to manage emissions, build resilience, and protect themselves from the growing impacts of climate change.

The CDP is a not-for-profit organisation that provides the global platform for cities and companies to manage, measure and disclose their energy and climate data. Every year the CDP and AECOM highlight cities which are excelling in climate disclosure and showcase each city’s efforts with an InFocus Report.

Cities across the world are taking bold action to implement the COP21 Paris Agreement demonstrating their ambition to address climate change by reducing emissions, adapting to climate impacts, and establishing low-carbon economies.

Up to now the Safe Freeway Project has been using WhatsApp as a method of broadcasting these messages to all of its subscribers.

The WhatsApp platform is great for social media chatting, but it was not designed as a Safety Application. SOTERIA was designed as a Social Safety App, and can do so much more than just distribute Broadcast messages from the Safe Freeway Project.

During the month of March the Cape Town Carnival, one of the city’s biggest street celebrations, took place along the Fan Walk in Green Point entertaining viewers with floats and vibrant dance routines under the theme, AMAZA– Ocean Odyssey where 2 000 performers lined the streets of Cape Town.

On 19 March 2017, the Absa Cape Epic, one of the world’s greatest mountain bike stage races started at Meerendal Wine Estate in Durbanville, attracting local and international riders, international viewership on live stream, as well as local fans following the race.

The race took place from 19-26 March from Hermanus with the final stage for the first time at Val de Vie Estate near Franschhoek.

Western Cape Drought Update As at 20 March 2017, dam levels have dropped to 28,6 % which is 1,4% down from the previous week. With the last 10% of a dam’s water mostly not being useable, dam levels are effectively at about 18,6 % of usable water with approximately 103 days of useable water left at current consumption levels.

The City of Cape Town thanks those consumers who continue to find new ways of saving water but challenges Team Cape Town to see if they can get much closer to the usage target.

The Mayoral Committee on 20 March 2017 recommended for noting by Council the declaration of a local state of disaster as a result of the drought. “We are in the midst of one of our worst droughts of the past century. Cape Town is in a waterscarce region, and is experiencing the impacts of climate change with an increased frequency of drought events.”

The two consecutive years of drought have severely reduced stream flows into the dams of the Western Cape Water Supply Scheme (WCWSS). The dams are likely to reach extremely low levels by the onset of the 2017 winter, and are unlikely to recover satisfactorily should average to below average rainfall be experienced over this coming winter.

The City’s contingency plans include further intensified restriction measures and the possibility of intermittent supply to conserve available water should dams drop to dangerous level, which would require emergency procurement of additional equipment and involve increased operational expenditure.

When activating, “I need help,” On the Road Alert, SOTERIA activates your previously created On the Road groups, and inform these contacts that you require assistance. Your location is given and a temporary group chat is opened to see you through your emergency. The ICC operator keeps a close watch on the incident to make sure your contacts are able to assist you, and if not, the operator will step in. This is a powerful tool with many different applications.

Construction & Relocation of Mediclinic Stellenbosch Mediclinic Southern Africa announced plans to relocate the current Mediclinic Stellenbosch to a more prominent site along the R44 in Stellenbosch.

Since opening their doors in 1992, the hospital has grown from a 58 bed hospital with only 3 theatres to a world class facility with 102 beds, 5 theatres and a busy 24 hour emergency centre.

Celebrating 25 years of care in 2017 Operations Executive, Willie Kruger emphasises that the need for the new hospital was driven by the heavy demand for local facilities, “Mediclinic Stellenbosch was unable to grow in line with the need for care at its existing premises and it was decided to provide a new building at an alternative site in order to allow the hospital to better service the community.

“We are building in additional capacity for any future growth to ensure our patients are able to access the best available care long into the future.”

The new hospital, situated on the corner of Strand Road (R44) and Elsie Du Toit Drive in Stellenbosch, will retain the original name and will offer a series of specialised units for patient centric care as well as a multi-disciplinary team of specialists and Emergency Centre.

The state of the art building will also include a day hospital to be known as Mediclinic Stellenbosch Day Clinic, allowing patients with planned, non-emergency surgical procedures to be admitted and discharged on the day of surgery.

The design for the new hospital has been strongly influenced by the need to create sustainable and eco-friendly facilities and will include design elements relying on natural light in patient rooms, visiting areas and doctor consulting rooms. Several other greening and environmental elements will be incorporated into the hospital to minimise the carbon footprint of the facility.

The current building situated in Die Boord, Stellenbosch will be converted to an orthopaedic unit – to be known as Mediclinic Winelands Orthopaedic Hospital.

Mediclinic Winelands Orthopaedic Hospital will house a number of Orthopaedic and Rheumatology specialists aiming to create a centre of excellence serving the Winelands community, ensuring all orthopaedic disciplines are covered within the facility. A second day hospital – the Mediclinic Winelands Orthopaedic Day Clinic - has been licensed for this hospital, catering for various short stay orthopaedic procedures.

Mediclinic Southern Africa Infrastructure General Manager, Kobus Jonck explains the timeline attached to the new hospital, “Our tender process closed early in March 2017. Following this certain legislative procedures need to be completed and we will be ready to break ground in May 2017. The project is expected to take approximately 20 months to complete, with the relocated Mediclinic Stellenbosch opening its doors in 2019.” The new hospital will be developed by Atterbury Properties, in consultation with Mediclinic Southern Africa.

Western Cape Confirmed as Top Province The Western Cape has been officially confirmed as the country’s Top Province in the 2015/16 provincial and local audit outcomes. The Western Cape Government was officially certified with 100% unqualified audits. The Province also achieved clean audits for 12 of its 13 departments. A total of 23 out of 30 Western Cape municipalities were also awarded clean audits.

This is the fourth year running that the Western Cape has led in audit outcomes in South Africa, with the 2015/16 audit outcomes the best to date.

Representing the Western Cape Government at the awards ceremony, Finance Minister, Dr Ivan Meyer said that the Western Cape Provincial Treasury actively supports municipalities and provincial departments to promote good governance, strengthen financial management and encourage accountability. “While we celebrate, we are mindful that we cannot rest until every rand is responsibly accounted for.”

South African brandies made a clean sweep at the 2017 World Drinks Awards, claiming gold medals as well as the ultimate title of World’s Best Brandy for the Oude Meester Demant. Now in its tenth year, the World Drinks Awards is hosted in London by TheDrinksReport.com to recognize spirit drinks and select the very best in all internationally recognized styles.

“With an ideal climate and a history of brandy production stretching back over 300 hundred years, it comes as no surprise that South Africa is widely regarded among the world’s best brandy producing countries,” says Distell Brandy Ambassador, Nick Holdcroft.

This is the second consecutive year that a South African Brandy has defended its claim for producing the world’s best brandy Klipdrift Premuim walked away with top honours in 2016.

The judging panel comprises a cast of highly respected and experienced authorities from the drinks and hospitality industry, who adjudicate hundreds of international submissions, scoring merit on nose, palate, finish, balance, character and quality.

Explore the museums of the V&A Waterfront in a new light, after dark. After a successful pilot event in July 2016, Museum Night V&A Waterfront returns with two events scheduled for 2017, the first taking place on the night of Wednesday, 28 June. The event allows the public to access a diverse programme of museums until late, while also experiencing a curated programme of performances throughout the night.

Most museum sites offer free admission to the public, with the Two Oceans Aquarium offering half price tickets on the night. Participating museums include Chavonnes Battery Museum, Robben Island Jetty Museum, Iziko Maritime Centre, and the Springbok Experience Rugby Museum, amongst other sites.

Healey’s Slow Matured Cheddar has churned out SA Champion status at this year’s SA Dairy Championships by soaring above all other competitors in the Raw Milk Semi Hard or Hard Cheese Category. The cheese is made by hand in limited quantities at Waterkloof Estate on the outskirts of Somerset West.

The seven-month matured cheese that took top honours exudes a harmonious savoury and nutty flavour, which is in perfect balance with saltiness and acidity.

Notably, it is made with unpasteurized (raw) milk – free from growth hormones and antibiotics - produced from a certified herd of grass-fed Holstein (also known as Friesian) cows from the Stellenbosch area.

Over the years, Healey’s improved its equipment and more recently, its facility too. At the end of last year, it was time for Healey’s to move on to greener pastures.

Financial Fitness Starts Today Rising costs are making it harder and harder for millions of South Africans to make ends meet each month. Putting some money aside for savings is even harder, but if you want to realise your dreams and retire well, then saving for tomorrow is exactly what you need to start doing today.

John Manyike, Head of Financial Education at Old Mutual, says that Government is under increasing pressure to balance its own budget. The country currently has debt of R2.2 trillion, which is the equivalent of 49% of GDP. This makes any significant increases in the level of social grants or pensions for struggling South Africans highly unlikely.

“It is therefore important not to rely solely on the Government pension for your retirement – but to start saving as early as possible to ensure that you can maintain a reasonable standard of living when you do stop working, Old Mutual Savings and investment monitor also reveals that one in three South Africans believe that the government will look after them when they retire.”

He adds that consumers need to get creative about stretching their income.

Cutting down on indulgences such as eating out in restaurants or buying clothes on a store-card that has a high interest rate, or even packing your own lunchbox instead of buying takeaways, will go a long way towards enabling you to save a little extra each month.

He points out that even a small increase in the amount that you put away each month can make a huge difference over time, thanks to the power of compound interest. Manyike believes the key to achieving financial fitness is to live within your income and not your credit limit.

Set your goals and stay committed - Determine what your goals are and set financial objectives for the short, medium and long term. Goals must be realistic to be achievable. Prioritise goals in order of importance, estimate how much you need to save for each, and settle on a timeframe. Be emotionally connected to your goals as this will keep you disciplined during difficult times such as the festive season and holidays, when you may be tempted to overspend.

Determine your needs honestly - Cut back on lifestyle expenses that you can do without, and then use those savings to pay off debt. If you eat out in restaurants once a week, decide as a family to reduce that to once a month. The money saved will help you settle debts or save for your children’s education.

Before you spend money on ‘nice-to-have’ items such as home décor, expensive shoes, or a new car, ask yourself if it is a ‘need’ or a ‘want’. Don’t spend on items that are not absolutely necessary when your goal is to destroy debt.

Stay focused on tackling your bad debts - Pay off your most expensive debt first. Your credit cards or store cards generally carry higher interest rates than your bond, for example. Consider consolidating all your debt into one loan to replace multiple interest charges, service fees and debit order fees with one consolidated payment.

The benefit is that the debt-free date is clear – and we all love to see the end line and feel a sense of satisfaction when reaching a goal. However, be warned that the zero balance on your credit card and store cards may tempt you to spend. Resist this temptation!

Over the past 25 years, the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) – the only registry in South Africa that supports an active unrelated donor match and transplant programme – has helped save the lives of hundreds of patients with lifethreatening blood diseases.

Currently, approximately 30 times a year, couriers travel to fetch stem cells from anonymous overseas donors, delivering them to South African patients awaiting bone marrow transplants. Timing is everything when a patient needs a bone marrow transplant to survive and the journey of stem cells for transplant is planned like a military operation. From searching for the right tissue match – finding someone who is like an identical twin found in the general public – to co-ordinating the collection and delivery of stem cells, the SABMR leaves nothing to chance.

Finding a matching donor - The SABMR’s mission is to find matching unrelated bone marrow donors for critically ill South Africans who need a transplant to live, but who do not have a match in their family. This represents the majority of patients – over 70% – living with disorders or illnesses such as leukaemia. Stem cell transplants can help patients recover from these serious maladies and live a long and healthy life.

Since the chance of finding a matching donor for a patient is approximately one in 100 000, identifying a suitable match is a complex process that can take weeks, or even months, to find. With only close to 74 000 registered donors in South Africa, the SABMR has partnered with donor registries in 56 countries worldwide to increase the chance of finding the perfect match for local patients.

Andrew Melck, 27, is a representation of the 70% of patients who rely on finding a match from an unrelated donor.

Andrew was diagnosed with leukaemia in September 2015. The SABMR conducted a search across local and international databases but a match was not found in South Africa. Just two months after Andrew’s diagnosis, the SABMR found a 10/10 match on the German database.

Comments Andrew: “The thought that a donor may not be found is one that slowly wears down your energy and emotions, leaving you open to worry and frustration. I was ecstatic and relieved when I heard the news that an international donor had been found.”

Small wonder then that Jackie Burger and H&M collaborated on Salon 58’s latest soirée that focused on sustainability in fashion held at Cape Town’s Gallery Momo recently.

Burger believes that this requires us to be sustainable in everything we do, something the Swedish retailer has committed to in its 2016 Sustainability Report. The range of trousers, shirts, dresses and skirts is all made from recycled and/or sustainably produced fabrics and materials. Centre stage was a gossamer pink evening gown made from soft chiffon that once was plastic bottles washed up on a beach.

In addition to this trademarked Bionic fabric, H&M is the world’s biggest user of cotton certified by the Better Cotton Initiative. Their goal is to use only recycled or sustainably sourced fabrics by 2030 and to be climate positive throughout the company by 2040. This undertaking starts with using only renewable energy in the production chain.

Burger and H&M’s Amelia-May Woudstra were joined by select panellists for the conversation around conscious living. SARIE editor Michelle van Breda, Tarryn Oppel, Marie Claire’s fashion director; architect Ilze Wolff and photographer Gerda Genis all highlighted different aspects of this “new way of thinking”.

To illustrate how easy it can be to take a more sustainable approach to fashion, guests were asked to bring unwanted clothes and drop them into the recycling bins provided by H&M’s global Garment Collecting initiative. Since its launch, over 35 000 tonnes of garments have been collected. In exchange, shoppers are rewarded with vouchers to use towards their next H&M purchase.

Burger will host her next salon on Saturday, 24 June whereafter she will launch a series of smaller, tailored Salon 58 experiences that focus on personal style.

The bag of life-saving stem cell fluid – live human tissue – must be transported by a personal courier and arrive within 72 hours of the start of collection to remain effective for transplant. It is kept in a small, cool, temperature-monitored hamper and closely watched to ensure its safety. Couriers may not take alcohol or sleeping pills on the plane and must keep the container within sight at all times, taking it with them wherever they go.

SABMR Assistant Harvest Co-ordinator, Jane Ward, is one such courier who has travelled locally and across the world to courier stem cells from donors to the bedsides of patients in South Africa. As a seasoned courier, Jane knows the importance of delivering stem cells on time.

On one occasion, while travelling from Sheffield, England to Manchester Airport to catch her connecting flight to Heathrow Airport, Jane found herself in a taxi stuck in traffic for more than an hour. Out of his own will, the taxi driver decided to risk getting points deducted from his driver’s licence to get Jane and the cells to the airport on time. Upon arriving at the airport, and with less than an hour until boarding time, Jane needed to make her way through security. The hamper carrying the cells cannot be X-rayed as this can destroy the cells. Thus, in order to prevent this, couriers have to be prepared and follow strict security protocol. After waiting for more than 20 minutes while the security manager verified her documents, Jane boarded the flight with minutes to spare.

Andrew concludes: “Words can’t describe the gratitude one has for the people involved in providing you with a chance of survival. On a mission to deliver the cells from the unselfish donor, the courier takes part in a race against time and is often faced with immense challenges. Their determination saves lives and we, as patients, are eternally grateful for this.”

Emirates has been recognised as the Best Airline in the World in the inaugural TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice® Awards for Airlines. In addition to clinching the grand prize, the airline was the biggest winner with 4 other awards including Best Major Airline - Middle East & Africa, Best Economy Class, Best First Class and World’s Best Airlines - Top 10.

As well as the £400 million investment in Club World, the latest-generation technology in the air and on the ground, African customers will also benefit from additional capacity on African routes, new lounges and enhanced catering. British Airways has also confirmed it will again operate its expanded Cape Town schedule, including three weekly flights from Gatwick, over the 2017/18 southern hemisphere summer. At its peak this schedule provides 19 weekly services between London and the Mother City.

More good news for African customers flying into Gatwick is that all operations have now been moved into the South Terminal, where a new premium check-in area has been created. The new First and Club lounges, with sweeping views of the runways, have 40% more floor space. Other features include power sockets with USB ports in most seating areas and upgraded Wi-Fi; a study with project tables, PCs and a printer; modern shower suites with Elemis amenities; a hot and cold self-serve buffet; full bars and tea and coffee stations and; centrally managed lighting set by time of day in different zones.

At Heathrow’s Terminal 5 British Airways has launched a new ‘First Wing’ check-in area, including a dedicated two-lane security channel and direct access to the Galleries First Lounge and Concorde Room for the first time. The new security lanes will also reduce the number of travellers passing through the existing lanes, helping to speed up the journey. The programme of lounge investment will see revamps of the Terminal 5 lounges as well as the Johannesburg lounge at OR Tambo.

This is the first year TripAdvisor has introduced a category for airlines in its signature Travelers’ Choice® Awards. The awards highlight the world’s top carriers based on the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for airlines worldwide gathered over a 12-month period.

Catering has been a focus across Africa and improvements have already been made across a number of routes, most recently Accra. Johannesburg will be the next route to benefit. In addition to improvements to the on-board menu a new service style is being introduced across Club World in September, with display trolleys allowing customers to select dishes from a choice of freshly prepared starters and desserts, providing an experience similar to that of a premium restaurant.

The airline recently announced a multi-million dollar cabin interiors upgrade programme including an enhanced Onboard Lounge for its flagship Airbus A380 aircraft which will make its debut in July. Emirates also recently underwent a product overhaul with a host of exclusive products introduced to its First and Business Class cabins. New additions include the world’s first moisturising lounge wear in First Class, luxury blankets, skincare from organic brand VOYA and a new range of amenity kits from Bulgari. In the last year, Emirates has also introduced several new products for customers travelling in Economy including the world’s first interactive amenity kits and sustainable blankets made from 100% recycled plastic bottles.

The on-board improvements extend to the latest-generation Wi-Fi, which will be rolled out across the long-haul network from April. Customers will be able to use their own devices to browse the internet, access email and check social media. In addition they will be able to stream video content from sites such as Netflix and YouTube.

Technology is also helping customers simplify and speed up their journeys through the airport. Customers are now able to self-service bag drop at Heathrow and Gatwick, enabling them to label their own bags and drop these off before proceeding through security.

Additionally British Airways has opened the first three automated boarding gates for UK domestic flights at Terminal 5. The gates use facial recognition to allow customers to simply scan their boarding pass before walking onto the aircraft.

Two Oceans Aquarium

Calls on Public to be on the Lookout for Turtles

Each year between April and June, a number of juvenile loggerhead turtles wash up on Cape Town beaches. Concerned citizens bring these stranded turtles to the Two Oceans Aquarium for rehabilitation. To date, five loggerhead hatchlings have been brought to the Aquarium and are undergoing rehabilitation.

The Aquarium is calling on all beachgoers to keep an eye open for these little sea turtles and to contact the Aquarium if they happen to find one.

What the public should do if they find a turtle on a Western Cape beach: Remove the turtle from the beach and DO NOT return the turtle to the sea, keep it dry and at room temperature – DO NOT place the turtle in water, place the turtle in a container that has ample air holes, and make a note of exactly where the turtle was found.

Please note: This advice is only valid for marine turtle strandings around the Western Cape. Should you come across a turtle elsewhere around the South African coast, please contact the local aquarium or animal rehabilitation centre.

Chris Bertish, internationally acclaimed Speaker, Big Wave Surfer and SUP Guinness World Record Holder, was greeted by a massive crowd at Cape Town International Airport Chris last month after he finally return home after completing the First Ever Solo Unsupported Transatlantic SUP Crossing.

Bertish set off on the greatest ocean adventure ever attempted from the coast of Morocco on 6 December 2016 and traversed 4,050nm/7,500km, paddling 1,944,000 strokes across the Atlantic Ocean for 93 days, to reach the finish in English Harbour, Antigua on 9 March.

Bertish stand up paddled to the English Harbour shores to receive a hero’s welcome and flotilla on the water to guide and encourage him to the finish line.

Chris’ own brothers, locals and project supporters from around the globe turned out to watch the dramatic arrival take place and cheer Chris on during the final strokes to the finish.

Sea turtles are temperate water animals and when they are washed up on Western Cape beaches they are often suffering from hypothermia, dehydration and possibly infection. The Two Oceans Aquarium rehabilitates the stranded turtles and once they are strong and healthy enough, they are released.

World First for Simon’s Town’s Lawhill Maritime Centre

Simon’s Town School’s Lawhill Maritime Centre has officially opened its new education and boarding facilities which include a ‘world-first’ electronic navigation classroom for secondary school students, a Marine Sciences classroom, a Ships Library and Resource Centre, and additional accommodation.

Twenty-two years ago Lawhill became the first school in South Africa – and possibly the world – to offer students a maritime-focused education while they are still at secondary school. It introduced two subjects, Maritime Economics and Nautical Science, with the aim of reducing youth unemployment and poverty by preparing young South Africans for careers in the industry in Grades 10 to 12. The two maritime subjects form part of the South African curriculum and National Senior Certificate.

“Until recently, Nautical Science instruction included training on paper charts and paper radar plots. While there are theoretical modules relating to electronic navigation systems, Lawhill identified the need to provide PC-based simulation training, especially in electronic chart display systems (ECDIS) as the students will encounter ECDIS both in their tertiary navigation studies and at sea.

As the nearly 20’ specialized SUP craft, the ImpiFish, shoved to shore for the first time in three months, after much cheering, hugging and tears of joy, Chris commented, “If you truly believe in yourself and persevere, anything is possible, and here we are. After over three months solo on the open ocean, I am here, on land again with friends and family – my feelings of accomplishment and extreme gratitude for everyone that made this incredible journey possible are beyond words.”

Over R5 million has already been raised via the SUP Crossing. Chris together with his team will continue to raise funds for several charitable organisations including The Lunchbox Fund, Operation Smile and Signature of Hope. Bertish personally committed to funding one operation for a child in Africa through Operation Smile for every World Record he achieved on this epic Transatlantic journey.

With Bertish’s long time experience as a keynote and inspirational speaker known internationally for inspiring audiences with his tales of courage, determination, and skill to overcome seemingly impossible obstacles in pursuit of his dreams,” Chris added, “Reaching your goals and breaking records is all about beating the odds and challenging your own limits until you achieve what you never imagined could be accomplished. Nothing is impossible.”

To ensure that our Nautical Science course remains current and relevant, and to provide a headstart for those of our learners who wish to embark on a seagoing career, we felt it imperative that the students are exposed to ECDIS while at Lawhill,” says Lawhill Head, Mrs Debbie Owen.

The appropriate simulator software, valued at over R1 million, was donated to Lawhill by Maretek’s Captain Kieron Cox. Captain Cox developed the ECDIS system which is currently in use in a number of countries across the world.

Electronic equipment was also donated by the AP Moller Foundation/Safmarine and ECDIS training provided by the South African Maritime Training Academy (SAMTRA) who will be using the new ECDIS facility during school holidays to train qualified officers, which will provide an income for Lawhill and support sustainability, as Lawhill does not receive any direct Government funding and relies solely on grants, donations and sponsored student bursaries to fund our operation.

The Lawhill Maritime Centre has also worked closely with the Two Oceans Aquarium to develop a Marine Science curriculum as the Aquarium is committed to education and has been visited by over 1 million school group children.

There are also several interesting items donated by the family of the late Captain Dai Davies, one of the country’s most prominent salvage experts, and Rob Young, another very prominent figure in the South African shipping industry and marine engineering sector.

When consulting with the Aquarium it was decided that introducing a subject into the school curriculum would be a service to students wishing to participate in the Oceans Economy, could benefit enormously. With dedicated assistance from Aquarium staff, the document is now awaiting National Education Department approval. The new Lawhill facilities also houses several important maritime photographic collections that record maritime history in Cape Town for many decades such as the collections of Robert Pabst, Karel de Vries, Michael Stuttaford and Unicorn Lines.

Coupled to this is the stated aim to gain more South African-owned and operated ships and to employ more South African seafarers.

The building of additional cabins has also made it possible for Lawhill to introduce its programme to more young people and the facilities is particularly significant when considering the importance of the shipping sector to the South African economy. A few years ago, the South African Government launched Operation Phakisa to focus, amongst others, on job creation in the maritime sector and on ways of extending the number of young people entering worthwhile careers in the sector.

Brings Swan Lake to Artscape The CAPE TOWN CITY BALLET brings a timeless classic to the ARTSCAPE Opera House from 2-18 June in a production which showcases the art of classical ballet at its best and epitomises the seamless integration of the beauty and grace of ballet with the athleticism required of today’s dancer.

This version of Swan Lake is based on that of Vladimir Bourmeister and was first taught to the CAPAB Ballet Company by Frenchman, Attilio Labis, in 1971. Labis had danced as a guest in Russia in several different productions and it was from these that he chose the elements to make it one of the most eclectic in the world.

This is the nineteenth time that this production has been mounted for this company, known for the past twenty years as the CAPE TOWN CITY BALLET, having been the UCT Ballet Co from 1934 to 1963 and the CAPAB Ballet Co from 1963 to 1997. It showcases the depth of balletic talent in a truly South African company!

At two performances, our Senior Principal ballerina, Laura Bosenberg, will be joined by Burnise Silvius, recently retired from the Joburg Ballet.

Laura will appear as the White Swan, Odette, with Burnise as the Black Swan, Odile. They will be partnered, as Prince Siegfried, by South Africa’s top male dancer, Thomas Thorne. At a third performance, Laura will dance Odette opposite Mariette Opperman as Odile.

The CAPE TOWN CITY BALLET welcomes back Kirstel Jensen in the role of Odile opposite Claire Spector as Odette, with Daniel Szybkowski as the Prince. The last pairing is Hannah Ward as Odette with Leanè Theunissen as Odile, partnered

by Conrad Nusser.

Kurt Wenner’s masterful 3D Meseum of Wonders Kurt Wenner, the internationally acclaimed 3D artist and inventor of this fun and spectacular type of artwork as seen on pavements around the world launched his “Incredible Illusions” exhibition at the V&A Waterfront Watershed in April and will be on show until 23 July 2017. Commonly known as 3D interactive pavement art, the pieces on exhibition are completely interactive and educational - a concept very different from the general idea that is given at conventional museum of no touching, no photographing.

Wenner was inspired by anamorphic perspective, but had to invent an entirely new geometry in order to create his astonishing 3D pavement art images.

Kurt produced his first commissioned mural at the age of sixteen and within a year he was earning his living as a graphic artist. He attended both Rhode Island School of Design and Art Center College of Design, before working for NASA as an advanced scientific illustrator, creating conceptual paintings of future space projects and extraterrestrial landscapes.

After participating in countless festivals, Wenner returned to fine art painting on commission and also created sculptures, decorative stucco relief, ceramic murals, architectural designs, and numerous images for publicity and advertising.

His creation is his book Asphalt Renaissance, which documents the history of pavement art and his role in transforming it from a dying tradition to a dynamic multi-dimensional art form. The exhibition includes an educational zone that shares the history of Pavement Art and how geometry plays a pivotal role 3D painting, immersive and interactive art pieces. Century City Investor’s Paradise as Shortage of Developable Land Looms The two factors that contribute most to the ever climbing prices of property in Century City firstly include the shortage of available land - limiting the expansion of the suburb - and secondly the ideal location it affords its residents.

So says Helga Clemo, MD for Seeff Century City, who has worked in the suburb for 11 years. Century City has experienced a 16% growth in freehold property prices and up to almost 16% growth in some sectional title complex prices in the past year.

“Besides the fact that Century City is centrally located to all major areas without the overcrowding of the CBD, has direct access to the N1 highway and is just 15 minutes away from the city centre, Cape Town International Airport and multiple popular beach locations, there will also come a point in the near future when no new development would be possible anymore and this will lead to a decrease in stock, making property even more sought after.”

“The suburb also offers amenities on its doorstep, these include Canal Walk Shopping Centre, Intaka Island Nature Reserve, kilometres of canals for various water sports as well as Central Park which hosts events such as the Day Market, Night Market, Full Moon Hike, Touch-Rugby and has also played venue to the Galileo Open Air Cinema.”

Clemo continues that while Century City is only a 250 hectare suburb, more than half of the land is occupied by canals, nature reserves and commercial properties.

The remaining land boasts a whopping 2 958 residential properties of which 77.2% are made up of sectional schemes and the remaining percentage of freehold.

“Recently completed developments such as Mayfair Gardens, Manhattan Quarter and Palme D’or have added another 249 properties to this mix and further developments set for completion in the next year include Water’s Edge, Palm Brook and Axis.”

Sitari Country Estate Gears Up for A Busy Year

Clemo continues that Century City has always been a bubble-like market place and an investor’s playground. The decrease in available stock and the constant demand to live here has resulted in a continuous climb in property value.

The 192-hectare Sitari Country Estate just outside Somerset West is becoming a landmark on the Helderberg basin landscape, and is now around 30 months into its journey to full maturity. Since launching in September 2014 the capital growth of its properties has been strong: calculated over the 30-month period plots have seen capital appreciation of 69%, apartments of 34% and homes of 26%.

Although the average sales value of sectional title has seen no growth, investors are still receiving high capital gains as complex-specific growth has been high.

Clemo adds another strong indicator of the investor’s market in Century City is that 63% of sellers in 2016 owned their property for less than five years, indicating that buyers re-sold their properties for a quick profit. Century City also caters to a big pool of buyers as 2016 buyers are relatively equally spread amongst all age groups.

She concludes that high rental values are also a key point to investors here.

Upmarket property coupled with the demand to live in Century City has pushed the rental values higher than in neighbouring suburbs. A very large portion of tenants in Century City are foreigners who are in South Africa for business and corporate tenants who need accommodation for their employees.

“There is a large workforce in Century City needing accommodation. Letting stock is plentiful here as more than half of the properties are investor-owned, due to the high rental returns.”

We Design & Develop Modern Websites John Coetzee, Executive Director of Uvest Property Group, developers of Sitari Country Estate, says that 2017 is set to be a big year for construction in Sitari. An update on how things are progressing on this R4 billion mega-project: Since the beginning 2017 to date over R90 million sold in terms of land transactions and properties in Sitari, 12 accredited developers working on site, an estimated 700 properties being under construction in Sitari Country Estate during 2017 and will include Sectional Title Apartments, and Village and Country Homes spread across the phases.

“The Site Development Plan for the Estate’s Communal Country Clubhouse is currently with Council for approval; I expect the clubhouse platform and roads to be completed this year and full construction to start by February 2018. The Wetland Design has been approved by the Local Authority and the Departments of Water and Environmental Affairs, and we will start shaping the 22-hectare wetland towards the middle of the year, while the full Stormwater Management Plan will be implemented this year. Excess stormwater (if any) will flow to our new dam, which holds 240 500 megalitres,” says Coetzee.

Coetzee says that while last year much of the construction at Sitari took place along the R102 side of the estate, in 2017 much of the activity will take place along the N2. This will include the Silo Park which includes a silo with water feature, pergolas and leiwaters, as well as the icons at each traffic circle, creating an inviting view from the N2. Construction on the 12 500 m2 Shoprite Checkers shopping centre is set to start in June 2018, while the next phase of expansion at Curro Sitari private school starts in May 2017.

The road infrastructure at the second Sitari gatehouse will be added this year, and construction on the second gatehouse will commence in 2018. In terms of sales, apart from the 22 Signature Collection premium plots facing onto the 40m wide central landscaped spine that leads down to the clubhouse. These include turnkey freestanding Village and Country Homes, phase 4 Country Plots and no less than six sectional title apartment schemes. The first three phases of Country Plots released for sale at Sitari Country Estate are all sold out, and 13 of the 22 Signature Collection stands that they recently released have also been snapped up within two months.

Adds Coetzee: “Forty two families are currently residing in Sitari, and at the end of April the Grand Olive with 69 apartments will be completed, which means we will keep gaining residents. By the end of the year we should have 150-200 families becoming resident in Sitari Country Estate.”

Stone takes first qualifying spot for 2017 Nedbank Golf Challenge South Africa’s Brandon Stone is the first player to qualify for the 2017 Nedbank Golf Challenge from 9 -12 November 2017 hosted by Gary Player, part of the European Tour’s newly-founded Rolex Series.

The 23 year old earned his spot in ‘Africa’s Major’ when he became the second-youngest player in South African golf history after Charl Schwartzel to win the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit. Stone, who claimed a second European Tour victory at this season’s Alfred Dunhill Championship, is now looking forward to his second appearance at the Gary Player Country Club at Sun City from 9-12 November, having made his debut in the $7.5 million event last year.

“Cementing my spot in the Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player is an incredible achievement,” he said. “It’s ‘Africa’s Major’ and it’s always a big event for a South African player.”

“It’s nice to represent your country abroad but it’s even better to represent your country at home. As a South African player, the support you get at that event is always great. The new format last year really took the event to another level and I think it will only keep growing. Under Keith Pelley the European Tour is doing some incredible things.”

“This new Rolex Series is opening a lot of doors for young players like myself to build their World Ranking points and climb the Official World Golf Ranking. And the Nedbank Golf Challenge is in its rightful place at the moment as part of this series. ” Stone also said he’s looking forward to mounting a strong challenge for the title as he seeks to build on what has already been an incredible start to his professional career on the European and Sunshine Tours.

“It is fantastic to have the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit title on my CV,” he said.

“To be honest, I didn’t think it would happen so soon, and being 23 and having that on your CV is quite special.”

“It was great to play in the Nedbank Golf Challenge last year, but I didn’t play to the standards I would’ve liked. It was the first time I had been in the Final Series on the Race to Dubai, and I hope to build on the lessons that I learned last year.”

The 2017 Discovery Sport Industry Awards & Summit The Discovery Sport Industry Awards celebrates the best work in the business of sport and showcases all the great work that has been completed during the previous awards cycle. For the coming cycle, to cater for a fast-paced industry, several new categories have been added which include Best Management of a Sportsperson, Sport Industry Personality of the Year and New Agency of the Year.

Additionally, new criteria have been added to existing categories to further increase their relevance.

Sport Industry Group also announced that an extra layer of judging has been added to make the awards process even more rigorous and stringent. Deloitte will once again serve as the independent adjudicator to ensure the Awards maintain their esteemed positioning and integrity.
