HOW DID THE KILLER WHALES OUTSMART THE GREAT WHITE SHARKS?

When three great white sharks mysteriously washed ashore along the coast in Gansbaai, researchers weren’t sure what to think. But after doing necropsies (animal autopsies) on all three sharks, the researchers identified a possible culprit. All of the sharks were missing their livers, and one was missing its heart. It’s likely that an orca, also known as a killer whale, attacked the sharks and ate their organs. The great white shark is one of the ocean’s most powerful predators, yet it is sometimes prey for orcas that killed several of the formidable creatures off South Africa’s coast this month. The rare necropsies conducted on the three carcasses that washed ashore show how orcas dominate the marine food

chain at the expense of great white sharks, whose ferocious reputation (thanks partly to the 1975 movie “Jaws”) belies their vulnerability to shark nets, fishing, poaching, pollution— and the biggest member of the dolphin family. Orcas, which also face human threats, have a softer image (the 1993 film “Free Willy” helped) due to their intelligence and accessibility at water parks. Ingrid Visser, who has studied killer whales for nearly 20 years, said orcas used their powerful tails to create strong underwater currents that forced the sharks to the surface, then stunned them. Cape Water Crisis - Health Clubs Turn Off The Steam In response to the serious water crisis in the Western Cape, Virgin Active health clubs in the region have closed their saunas and steam rooms and have stopped the filling of swimming pools. The latter action may mean the closure of pools when the level is no longer safe for swimming. Wesley Noble, Head of Changing Business for Good at Virgin Active, says these measures come on top of a range of actions which the clubs have already taken including shutting off high pressure sensation showers, educating members and cutting water usage in every area of the business.

Noble says the company has been implementing a programme of water conservation across all of its clubs for several years, and consumption is down 11% nationally on a year-on-year basis, but the situation in the Cape “has really focussed our minds and we calculate we’ve saved as much as 10.5 million litres in the region which is the equivalent of 7 extra glasses of drinking water for every resident in the Western Cape.”

CAPE TOWN RANKED AS GLOBAL LEADER IN CLIMATE DISCLOSURE

BEAUTY Page 5

SCULPTURE Page 7 Photo: Green Point Urban Park - Photo Credit: Craig Howes/Cape Town Tourism

The City of Cape Town has been ranked as one of the top five cities in the world out of 533 cities for demonstrating leadership in our climate disclosure where we measure and disclose our energy and climate action data annually to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). This achievement saw Cape Town joining over 500 cities, 100 state and regional governments, and 5 800 companies who are now measuring and disclosing climate action data on an annual basis in order to manage emissions, build resilience, and protect themselves from the growing impacts of climate change.

The CDP is a not-for-profit organisation that provides the global platform for cities and companies to manage, measure and disclose their energy and climate data. Every year the CDP and AECOM highlight cities which are excelling in climate disclosure and showcase each city’s efforts with an InFocus Report. Cities across the world are taking bold action to implement the COP21 Paris Agreement demonstrating their ambition to address climate change by reducing emissions, adapting to climate impacts, and establishing low-carbon economies. Cape Water Crisis - Health Clubs Turn Off The Steam (Continue from Page 1) Noble acknowledges that this reduced consumption needs to become a permanent habit; “water is such a precious resource everywhere in South Africa and we have to find every way to conserve it.” Among the measures already taken across the group are: Eco-showerheads, low flow aerated taps, dual flush toilets, replacing PVC piping with stainless steel to prevent leaks, pulse metres to monitor use & identify leaks, rain water harvesting and water recycling projects especially for swimming pool top-ups, enhanced pool management which reduces backwash times, regular water audits, training for staff on water management, educating members on water conservation through the Save The Drop Campaign e.g. The 2 Minute Power Shower Challenge posters in shower areas, junior members in Club-V get Save The Drop colouring books. The group is also testing a scheme to re-use purified waste water from pools and showers in ablutions. How Did The Killer Whales Outsmart The Great White Sharks?

Photo Credit: Marine Dynamics/Dyer Island Conservation Trust: T Kaschke

“Once the shark is at the surface, the killer whale pivots and lifts its tail out of the water and comes down on top of it like a karate chop,” she said. It is the buoyant livers that then cause the shark’s body to rise to the surface. What really shocked scientists was that the livers of all three sharks were removed, with surgical precision suggesting the orcas, also known as killer whales, targeted the nutrient-rich oil and fat in the organs and discarded the rest of their prey. Sharks have enormous livers (can weigh more than 60kg) filled with fats that give the shark buoyancy. “Bony fishes have a swim bladder that they can fill with gases, and those gases provide buoyancy for the fish,” said Andrew Nosal, an assistant professor of biological sciences at Saint Katherine College in San Marcos, California, and a visiting assistant researcher at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego. (Nosal was not involved in the recent shark analyses.) “Sharks do not have a swim bladder. Instead, they have a very large liver. In addition to being filled with fat, shark livers are “very energy- and nutrient-rich,” Nosal said. It’s unclear why orcas would go after the sharks’ livers, but Nosal said he imagines “they have a high metabolism, and they have a lot of nutrient needs, and so those fats might really help them out.” Alison Towner, a marine biologist with the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, which seeks to protect the fragile ecosystem in waters around the southern tip of Africa said: “They work together and are very co-ordinated. Two orcas take a pectoral fin in their mouth and pull open a shark together to extract the liver. Nature can be so cruel and the dexterity these enormous animals are capable of is mind blowing, almost surgical precision as they remove the squalene-rich liver of the white sharks and dump their carcass.” Each of the sharks had a big wound on its underside, a sign of the dexterity of the orca, whose biggest males can be well over nine meters (30 feet) long—considerably larger than great white sharks.

(Continue from Page 1)

Even if they have an advantage, orcas are unlikely to hunt great white sharks on a regular basis, said George Burgess, director of the Florida Program for Shark Research. “But smaller sharks can be a routine part of an orca diet, and studies have shown that the rough texture of shark flesh grinds down the enamel on orca teeth over time,” he said. Killer whales are apex predators and while we are accustomed to viewing great white sharks as occupying the top of the food chain in our waters, orcas are much more specialised hunters and consider almost anything in the ocean as potential prey,” according to the South Africa’s Department of Environmental Affairs. “The mammals have highly developed social groups as well as a large brain, the capacity to learn and the ability to locate with the help of sound waves that bounce off objects.” “Orcas are known to have culture, much like humans do, and different orca cultures specialise on different prey and different hunting strategies,” said Dr Boris Worm, a marine research ecologist at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Photo Credit: Marine Dynamics/Dyer Island Conservation Trust: S Hoerbst

Offshore orcas are rare and very mobile, so it is very conceivable that they show up in an area where they were previously not seen and exploit sharks in that region,” Worm wrote in an email to The Associated Press. “Of course, a white shark would be a difficult prey to tackle due to its power and size, but orcas (again like humans) use group hunting strategies that can outsmart almost any prey.” “We, as shark biologists, recognise that the sharks are going to get eaten sometimes by predators, just like they eat things themselves,” said Burgess, the Florida expert. “It’s all part of the give-and-take of the natural world.” Article by Linda Chivell

Strategy To Become Business Tourism Capital In Africa Becomes Reality

The City of Cape Town is delighted by the latest rankings released by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) which once again placed Cape Town as the number one city in Africa for business tourism events. ICCA evaluated 12 212 rotating international association meetings which took place in 2016. The organisation represents the main specialists in organising, transporting, and accommodating international meetings and events, and comprises over 1 000 member companies and organisations in almost 100 countries worldwide.

Cape Town has year-on-year been confirmed as the events capital of Africa and the latest rankings are further proof that the cities efforts to become the business events capital on the continent are paying off. The city boasts a diverse annual events calendar and provide funding to make sure we bring events that position Cape Town globally as a competitive business destination. Some of the key gatherings hosted and supported by the City in 2016 include the South African Innovation Summit, the Mining Indaba, the Structural Engineering, Mechanics and Computation International Conference and the World Energy Cities Partnership Annual General Meeting. Total funding to all major business events amounted to approximately R8 million. Since 2012, it has been part of our Economic Growth Strategy to build the city’s reputation as a place that is open for businesses by creating an enabling environment for economic growth and to create much needed jobs. The events and c-onferencing sector is a key part of our economy and major job creator and its value cannot be underestimated. The City has also launched the Invest Cape Town initiative to further strengthen our standing in the world as a leading business destination. As the Ideas Capital of Africa, Cape Town is the ideal place where the leading minds in a range of sectors can gather to discuss ideas and turn them into tangible enhanced economic growth. Cape Town’s positive leap of 15 places to be ranked in the Top 40 destinations for business tourism in the world is encouraging, but we will now work even harder to leverage off the events to get into the top 10 business tourism cities in the world.

Helping To Save The Planet ‘One Day At A Time’ Conservationist adventurer Braam Malherbe and rowing partner Wayne Robertson have arrived back in Cape Town to an enthusiastic welcome and emotional reunions with family and friends, after braving strong winds, extreme sleep deprivation and a host of other challenges rowing from Cape Town to Rio to inspire people to help save the planet. The pair’s aim was to raise awareness for the global Do One Thing (DOT) Challenge, to protect the Earth from further environmental harm. They reached Rio on 9 May 2017, after 92 days in a 6.8m-long and 1.8m-wide vessel, rowing gruelling two-hour shifts around the clock.

The run-up to the voyage entailed two to three years of preparation and “a lot of training.” He is passionate about the need for change for the survival of the planet – “without renewables, there’s no future”. Among the problems Malherbe and Robertson encountered during the threemonth crossing were major difficulties charging the batteries for their various solar-powered devices because of the predominantly cloudy weather, and having to resort to water rationing after their reverse-osmosis manual water desalinator packed up.

To prepare for this physical and emotional test, preparation had been key, said Malherbe in an interview soon after touching down at Cape Town International Airport. Before the transatlantic crossing, he had “zero experience” and had never -June Winter 1 2017/05/27 11:12:02 AM crossedA5Henri'sAd an ocean on2017.pdf a ship or yacht. The three most important aspects of gearing up for the journey had been “exercise, the correct diet and rest”.

They saw no sharks, but did encounter a “magnificent, very inquisitive sunfish” in the indigo waters, and a remora fish, which stayed under the boat for three weeks – long enough to be nicknamed “Raymond the remora”. Malherbe, who lost about 14kg while at sea, is no stranger to endurance adventures: in 2011, he finished an unaided 40-day race to the South Pole; in 2006, he ran for 4 200km along the length of the Great Wall of China. He has been involved in a number of worthy conservation initiatives – from helping to save rhinos from poachers to educating children and school principals about the role of environmental protection for the planet’s future. Robertson is “a skipper, boat builder, marine surveyor, cyclist, surfer, musician and passionate eco-warrior,” with a deep passion for the sea. Cross Cape Cycle Route To Boost Cyclotourism In The Western Cape The Cross Cape cycle route, which travels through some of the most scenic small towns across the Western Cape, is expected to deliver a significant economic impact to the province’s rural economy. The route is an initiative of the Western Cape Government, and supported by Wesgro, municipalities, tourism offices across the province, as well as the private sector. The Cross Cape Cycle Route was launched by Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities in Stellenbosch on 11 May 2017, where he outlined the province’s cycling initiative ahead of the inaugural ride from Plettenberg Bay to Stellenbosch. He invited residents in each of the participating towns to join the group as they travelled through each leg. He said the 742km route would drive tourists to towns across the province, creating jobs and growth.

At each departure point, Minister Winde highlighted the unique tourism trends and visitor attractions for that specific region. Town mayors attended the send-off in each town as well as residents who wanted to ride with the group. Rural villages along the route now form part of the Cross Cape, a cycling attraction marketed to tourists across the world. During the last leg of the Cross Cape ride, Minister Winde rode in tandem with a visually impaired cyclist, Cindy Jacobsz, who works for the Western Cape Government. “I chose to ride the route because I love cycling and to raise awareness on visually impaired cycling, to experience the beauty of the Western Cape. We can also enjoy the nature through other séances and with the assistance of my “pilot” (the person steering the tandem) see new places and have fun in a healthy way,” said Jacobsz. The route is now open year round to cyclists wishing to undertake the venture on their own programme. Riders are encouraged to take it at their own pace, stopping in at the wealth of accommodation options all along the route. There is no cost to ride the route, and it is open to all throughout the year. “Cross Cape is an initiative under Project Khulisa, which has the target of adding up to 100 000 jobs to the tourism sector. With this route, we are seeking to increase tourist flow to towns off the beaten track. We are eager for residents in those towns to start packaging offerings around the route, including hospitality services.”

On 12 May Alan Winde and a group of riders started the inaugural ride in Plettenberg Bay. They travelled along mainly gravel roads and forest tracks through Knysna, Rheenendal and George. The route then crossed over the Montague Pass into the spectacular Klein Karoo, touching Herold, Oudsthoorn, Calitzdorp and Van Wyksdorp, before heading to Riversdale, Suurbraak, Swellendam and Riviersonderend. The last leg took riders from Greyton, over the Franschhoek Pass to end the ride in Stellenbosch after 8 days in the saddle.

“We’ve seen that a route like this can unlock economic opportunities for residents who cater for riders as they move through. Riders might want to camp along the route, or need a service which ports their baggage from one town to the next. Local entrepreneurs in these towns now have access to an international market.” Additionally, in the months to come, we’ll be facilitating a globally-recognised bike mechanic training programme. The Western Cape Government will support a select number of locals to take part in this training, as part of Project Khulisa,” says Minister Winde. The Cross Cape Route is the first route from Cape Cycle Routes, a network of routes planned for the Western Cape, which will be launched over the next two years,” said Minister Winde. First Phase of Luxury

New Contemporary Luxury

Apartments Launched - Acorn Creek Lifestyle Estate

Hotel In A Timeless Setting

Acorn Creek Lifestyle Estate occupies a site of 18ha next to the extensive Sitari Country Estate and is being developed by Multi Spectrum Property (MSP). Unlike other estates nearby, Acorn Creek offers a true village feeling. Two large oak trees flank the entrance, and a river – the Moddergatspruit – runs the entire length of Acorn Creek.

Orientated to maximise the exceptional views afforded by its magnificent setting, the first phase of the Pearl Valley Hotel by Mantis at Pearl Valley, part of Val de Vie Estate, is now complete. Guests will stay, play and relax in sophisticated, understated luxury with the assurance of the outstanding levels of professionalism and hospitality associated with Val de Vie Estate and Mantis, the respected conservation-conscious group of hotels and eco-escapes that has developed and manages the hotel. Maximising exposure to the beautiful location and views framed by the mountain peaks was key for Francois Theron, Director of FDT Architects. To achieve the brief for a hotel consisting of both single and double suites while limiting massing on the site, he conceived a design of double-storey residences, seamlessly contextualised within the current landscape at Pearl Valley, and incorporating existing trees to break the scale. Senior Project Architect, Penny Murray, highlights that the double units with their balconies on both sides were designed to impart a sense of living in and through the spaces. For the interior design, Maurette Van Eyssen of MI Designs, also took her cue from the expansive views across the Paarl-Franschhoek Valley to the surrounding Simonsberg Mountains. To ensure the attraction of the scenery was unimpeded and to draw the exterior in, outside hues and textures are reflected and floor plans are open and uncluttered.

Says Riaan Roos, CEO of the multiple award-winning MSP group of companies: “Acorn Creek offers a pocket of exclusivity, security and energy-efficient living. The 37 homes in phase 1 of Acorn Creek Lifestyle Estate have all been sold, and selling is well under way on phase 2 which includes 38 homes. We are now launching the first phase of our highly anticipated luxury apartments at Acorn Creek.

The scheme is clearly contemporary but like the landscape beyond, it evokes a certain timelessness. A neutral palette of greys and whites predominates, with accents of blue referencing mountain chasms, streams and the wide country sky. Vibrant artworks celebrating indigenous flora provide a rich counterpoint to this calm, refreshing scheme.

“In total there will be 195 apartments, which we are releasing in three phases. Phase A with 76 apartments has just been introduced to the market, and we sold 10 on the launch day. These apartments offer either two or three bedrooms. Each two-bedroom apartment has one dedicated covered parking bay, while the three-bedroom apartments each have two covered parking bays. There is also ample visitors’ parking. There are a variety of plans to choose from to suit the needs of each individual. Some ground floor apartments also include exclusive use gardens, and storage rooms are available to rent for those who need additional storage space.” Apart from the standard green features such as LED lighting and solar geysers, the development also has a grey water collection and distribution system. Acorn Creek features a 1.4 km walking or jogging trail along the river. Landscaped ponds with berms and walkways add to the park-like surroundings, as do the children’s play equipment in the parks and outdoor gym. A communal heated swimming pool with covered pergolas will also be available for the enjoyment of all residents within the estate. Acorn Creek is ideally located approximately a 30-minute drive from Cape Town, 20 minutes from Cape Town International Airport and just 5 km from Somerset West. World-renowned wine estates and the University of Stellenbosch are just a 10-minute journey away, as are nearby beaches, golf courses, weekend markets and various mountain bike trails. There is easy access to educational and commercial amenities in the immediate surroundings, as Acorn Creek is situated adjacent to the new Curro Sitari private school and close to the planned new 12 500 m2 flagship Shoprite Checkers shopping centre. Access to public transport and major traffic arterials is extremely convenient. Combined with this modern country village lifestyle is top-end access control including thermal imaging cameras, biometric identification, professional guards and state of the art perimeter securing by Fang, an industry leader.

Sophistication is emphasised in smooth, high-gloss surfaces and coldness is averted by juxtaposing these against the warmth and texture of light natural woods. As Van Eyssen says, the units were designed with avid golfers and their families in mind, however guests don’t have to play golf to enjoy their stay at the Pearl Valley Hotel by Mantis. Guests will have access to the award-winning Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, swimming pools, tennis and boules courts, the equestrian centre, the golf driving range, putting green and chipping practice areas. In addition, there are parks, children’s play areas and extensive hiking and biking trails.

The Biggest Mistakes People Make Regarding Their Pension Starting too late - When you are young you think that you have a lifetime to save for retirement but before you know it retirement is around the corner. The sooner you start the easier it is to reach your targets because of power of compound growth. You can save a smaller amount each month to get you to the same target over time. Underestimating how much retirement will cost - It is important to have a budget so that you can see how much money you need each month. This will help you see how much income you need after retirement. Don’t think you will sit at home after retirement so you only need a food and electricity. Use today’s values in your calculations, inflation can be taken into account for projections. Once you know how much you need you can calculate how much you need to save to get that income. Not paying off debt before retirement - At retirement you are allowed to take all your money in cash from a provident fund and up to one third in cash from a pension fund. The first R500 000 you take in cash from all your retirement products is not taxed. If you have not paid off all your debts by the time you retire you need to settle the debt from this cash portion. You might also not have enough cash available to pay all the debt and then you can lose that asset if your monthly income is not enough to pay off the debt monthly. The more debt you need to pay the less you have to provide you an income. Most debt interest is higher than interest received on investments so don’t invest if you still have debt, with the exception of house and car debt. Not reviewing your investments - As your targets and situation change so should your financial plan change. You don’t have to check the value daily but at least annually, look at the statement and look at if you are on target or not. Thinking your employer fund savings will be sufficient - In the majority of cases you need to save extra especially if you started contributing later in life or if you had a break in contributions. Most employer funds allow additional voluntary contributions which is cheaper than saving in your own capacity. You can contribute up to 27.5% of your total taxable income annually, with a maximum of R350 000 and get the tax back on the contribution. Prevent yourself from being part of the 90% of people in SA who will need help from either your family, the community or the State. Not making use of the investment structures available - Choose the product to suit your needs. Each investment product has benefits and negatives. Retirement Annuities contributions have tax benefits but are not accessible before retirement. Unit trusts do not give you tax savings but are accessible. A Tax Free Savings Account is accessible and has tax benefits on the growth but will take a long time to show the benefits.

By diversifying your savings you can structure your income more tax effectively after retirement. Cashing in savings before retirement - Don’t take your cash from your employer’s fund every time you change jobs. You will have to start your savings from scratch and will need to save more and more each time to get you to the same target. There is tax on the cash you take on withdrawal which reduces your potential tax free portion at retirement as well.

Not knowing what products are available at retirement - You can choose a fixed annuity or a living annuity after retirement. A fixed annuity gives you a guaranteed income for life, but no capital is available to beneficiaries when you have passed away. In a Living Annuity you can leave a legacy, but you are responsible for looking after your investments and spending and you can easily run out of income after a few years. Choose your investment portfolios to match your product. Investing in the wrong portfolios - Don’t be swayed by emotions. Especially when markets are not performing well or there is a lot of uncertainty in the market. If you are saving for a long term goal don’t make decisions based on short term volatility. Getting advice from friends - You can get advice from your friends on what hairstyle to get, but would you ask them to cut your hair? So why take financial advice from someone who is not a professional? Make use of a Certified Financial Planner from a reputable company where you can get advice tailor made for you. REALTY

Now is the time for a Plan B in Europe! Cyprus also has the following lifestyle benefits:

1. Cyprus is economically stable and politically secure – the country is not flooded with refugees. 2. Properties in Cyprus offer excellent value for money when compared to other European countries – especially homes right on or near to The Med. 3. The lifestyle is similar to South Africa: the golf courses are world-class, the countryside is breathtakingly beautiful and Cyprus has 57 blue-flag status beaches, the cleanest seas in the Med and a mountain-range where it snows for 3 months. 4. No inheritance tax: on your death you can dispose of your assets to your loved ones without having to pay any tax. This is advantageous for legacy planning. 5. There are no social problems in Cyprus: and because of this Cyprus has huge appeal as a destination for relocation, retirement, holiday-making and investment. Some other attractions that Cyprus offers are:

Securing a 2nd citizenship or permanent residency status in another country is something that many South Africans want to acquire. The main reason is a personal one: to assure their family’s future by implementing a tangible Plan B by protecting against political risk as well as economical instability.

a. Being an ex-British colony, there is no language barrier – everyone speaks English and all your documentation is in English. No need for a translator!

Europe is the world’s largest single market & global trading block and is still the most favoured destination for investors. The attraction of having unlimited access to the EU & the UK is where a 2nd citizenship in Europe has it’s merits. But the real benefits are being able to travel, live, work & study anywhere in the European Economic Area plus enjoy visa-free travel to many countries in the world.

c. Low cost of living;

Securing permanent residency status is also appealing because it gives the holders of the residence permit the legal right to live in that country without having to go through onerous immigration processes should they wish to make a permanent move.

b. The discovery of natural gas is already having a positive impact on foreign investment and infrastructural development; d. Euro-accredited education gives your children a distinct advantage when they enter the global job market; e. Europe on your doorstep: Cyprus has 2 International Airports and several marinas; f. 1st world medical facilities & affordable healthcare with highly qualified doctors & specialists.

There are a few countries in Europe offering the chance to secure a 2nd passport or permanent residency status, but the choice of where to invest can be daunting. Investors are advised to assess each programme to understand the minimum investment amount, the pre-requisites in terms of documentation, any travel limitations and all of the costs – both immediate and ongoing. Cyprus, an ex-British colony, full EU member and not part of Greece, currently has the most attractive 2nd citizenship plan on offer; as well as the best permanent residency programme available. Citizenship is granted in 3 months via Cyprus’ “Citizenship through investment” programme: - This is the quickest process in Europe; - The main investor, spouse, all dependent children up to 28 years of age; as well as the parents of the investor all qualify; - This is an investment – not a donation; - Property/ies CAN be rented out to earn a Euro-based income; - Property/ies only need to be kept for 3 years, where-after they can be sold as long as a property worth min €500k is retained; - Citizenship is passed down through descent offering a real legacy to future generations.

An astute offshore property investment that works for you in the short, medium and long term is the achievement of a lifetime. In Cyprus investing in the “Citizenship through Investment” or the Fast Track residency programme not only makes financial sense, but it will tangibly benefit your family for generations to come. Can you afford not to take advantage of this while the programmes are still open? Cypriot Realty – a proudly South African company in operation for nearly 9 years – can assist you.

We are recognised and respected as Southern Africa’s authoritative offPermanent Residency is granted in 4 – 6 weeks on the “Fast Track” programme. shore investment specialists, promoting Cyprus as an ideal destination for - This is the only programme in Europe where LOGO3 generations in the same family acquiring EU citizenship or permanent (including both the parents & the parents-in-law) all acquire permanent residency, property investment, immiresidency by buying one property! gration or retirement and starting an - Dependent children up to 25 qualify; EU-based business - we understand investor’s needs. - Property can be rented out; - There is no requirement to live in Cyprus; nor be domiciled there for tax.

EMS – THE FUTURE OF FITNESS Electro Muscle Stimulation (EMS) is the fastest growing wellness and fitness trend globally that offers the ultimate in muscle strengthening, body shaping, cellulite reduction and weight loss programs. EMS training is able to provide stronger and more intense muscle activation than could be achieved with voluntary exertion alone. This provides better intra- and inter-muscular contraction, and a 20 minute session is comparable to several hours of conventional weight training – but without the risk of using heavy weights. EMS also provides an improvement in muscle activation rates commonly known as “muscle memory”.

The South African Society of Physiotherapy is getting ready to welcome the world to Cape Town and all it has to offer. The Rainbow Nation is where you can experience the ultimate combination of nature, wildlife, culture, adventure and heritage.

“We begin the process with a Body Composition Analysis that provides detailed information about muscle mass, fat, water, protein, mineral, and left / right balance of the muscular and fat structure.” “This, with the cyclist’s personal requirements and goals, is used to determine a specific program in order to achieve maximum results, which can be monitored and measured.” “EMS FutureFit do not have joining fees like most fitness facilities, and do not believe in long term contracts – we are confident that you will enjoy great individual service AND get results that will make you want to return,” Hans concludes. 20 minutes a week will change your life – start YOUR fitness evolution by contacting EMS FutureFit. Some benefits include: Significantly reducing body fat, Developing a tighter and toned body, Strengthening core and abdominal muscles, Reducing back pain and improving body stability, Strengthening pelvic floor muscles, Increasing power, endurance, dynamic and explosive strength, Speed, agility, and increased performance due to direct stimulation of “fast-twitch” muscle fibers, Improvement in posture and muscular imbalances. BIO RESONANCE FREQUENCY THERAPY This process identifies and eliminates the root cause of a disease or condition, whereas conventional medicine generally simply soothes symptoms. Scientific studies, medical records and video footage¹ substantiate that frequencies (sound waves) do in fact destroy pathogens - bacteria, viruses, parasites, even tumours without endangering any part of the body system. This safe, non-toxic method is based on the scientifically-proven fact that every pathogen has a frequency which differs from that of the body cell. Thorough research over many decades have identified the relevant frequencies to be used; therefore, applying the correct frequencies disables and destroys the pathogen. It also stimulates a weakened immune system, enabling it to combat infection and disease. Malfunctioning organs and body systems start working normally again - healing the body. Successful treatment nevertheless depends on the following: Correct diagnosis/analysis; Systematic therapy; Observing therapeutic instructions presented by your Therapist. Control Diagnostics after a series of treatment sessions are equally vital to establish the level of success achieved. Furthermore: Frequencies are among the most globally-acclaimed and proven ways of winning the war against cancer² ¹YouTube: Search for “Killing with frequencies” and watch numerous fascinating demonstrations. ² www.cancertutor.com SoundWaves Health Clinic in Gordon’s Bay offers a 2-pronged benefit. 1) Scanning and Analysis; 2) Treatment. The great advantage of our 3D Scanning system is the early detection of tumours and latent life-threatening conditions. An added bonus is that it can identify anomalies in chromosomes, DNA and genes!

This system is also excellent for children; no trauma, stress or handling involved. ADHD, for instance, is just one of the countless conditions that can be detected – and treated. Delheim’s Jazz and Cheese Fondues Escape the cold with a warm-hearted feast Now’s the time to beat the rush and book your seat at the fabulous Delheim Jazz and Cheese Fondues. Held every year for over a decade, the lingering lunchtime event’s cosy delights offer the perfect remedy to cold and rainy winter blues. The Jazz and Cheese Fondues take place from 25 June to 27 August this year, returning to Delheim’s snug and intimate underground wine cellar. It’s here that the cheese-pot lids come off, melting all resistance with piping hot Swiss-style cheese and melodic jazz tunes performed live by talented local bands. Beloved for its views as much as its wines, Delheim lies on a shoulder of the beautiful Simonsberg Mountain just outside Stellenbosch. A home for generations since 1699, the estate has become endeared for its family-friendliness. Here, the Sperling family have made award-wining wine since the 1960s. It’s the Sperling heritage and hospitality from which the idea for a farm-style fondue arose. Cape wine industry legend and patriarch “Spatz” Sperling was born in Tettnang, a German town on the border of cheese-loving Switzerland. To date, many Delheim fans have come to appreciate the event in the context of what has become famous as the Delheim way and captured in its evocative motto: “Worth the journey.” There’s nothing fast and furious about Delheim’s Jazz and Cheese Fondues. Picture pots of Gruyère and Emmentaler for ladling, dipping and smearing with a selection of delicious bites and exceptional Delheim wines. This is festive foodsharing at its best- an occasion best enjoyed with a group of loved ones.

La Petite Colombe

With Interactive Cooking Classes At Durbanville Hills

Set To Open In Franschhoek

To warm up the coming winter months, Durbanville Hills is launching its new and exciting interactive cooking classes for aspiring foodies, in collaboration with The Little Pink Chef, Maryke Josling. This limited offering will be taking on two different occasions – the first on 27 June and the second on 29 July.

Franschhoek - the world renowned and picturesque food and wine capital of South Africa, is abuzz with the imminent opening of the iconic La Colombe’s new La Petite Colombe set to open on 1 August 2017, replacing The Tasting Room at Le Quartier Français – an exciting new partnership with the owners of the stylish and luxurious Leeu Collection.

The two classes on offer are an Italian cooking class, which will take place in June, and a sushi-making class, set for July. Upon arrival, each guest will receive a welcome drink followed by a tutored wine tasting of the Durbanville Hills range. From there, guests will set off to their stations to start preparing dinner. In the Italian class on 27 June 2017, 18 participants will be taught how to perfect the art of pasta-making. For the second class taking place on 29 July 2017, things may get a little fishy as guests learn everything there is to know about becoming the ultimate sushi master - a maximum of 24 participants will be allowed. Simone Koen, Public Relations Officer at Durbanville Hills, says that these classes will not only offer guests the opportunity to refine their cooking skills, but will also guide them on how to pair each of the dishes they create with the perfect wines. “We are very excited about the upcoming introduction of these cooking classes as this is something completely new for the winery. Our hope that guests find them informative and fun, allowing for the introduction of many more exciting classes in the future.” For more information visit www.durbanvillehills.co.za

Proprietor chefs and business partners, Scot Kirton (Eat Out Chef of the Year 2015) and Head Chef, James Gaag, will be directing a highly talented and select team, to honour the heritage of this fine venue, and marry it with the La Colombe magic. The Franschhoek kitchen will be headed up by the talented, young La Colombe chef, John Norris-Rogers, who will be working sideby-side with chefs Scot and James. La Petite Colombe will have a striking new interior, styled by architects Rohan Young and the Leeu Collection’s interior designer, Beverley Boswell. The interiors will be classic, with a modern-country accent. The innovative 8- and 12-course tasting menus will welcome guests with a stylistic and flavor familiarity to that of the award-winning La Colombe, focusing on the finest local and seasonal produce, and recommended with a rare and fine wine selection. With La Colombe being a perennial fine-dining favourite for locals and international guests alike, one should expect a culinary extravaganza, with a hint of familiarity, and perhaps a surprise or two.

Sommelier Tinashe Nyamudoka Brings His Expertise And Charm To The Test Kitchen When Zimbabwean-born Tinashe Nyamudoka arrived in Cape Town in 2008, he knew nothing about wine. Nor could he have imagined that seven years later he would be one of South Africa’s finest and most-respected wine sommeliers. “Wine is my passion. Wine is my life. If it weren’t for wine I wouldn’t be where I am today.” “It is an amazing beverage in that it connects you to other people. As a sommelier I try to not only sell the wine; I try to sell the experience, the story and the love,” says Tinashe. His is a success story built on ambition, strong work ethic, a drive for perfection, the boldness to take risks where need be and a passion for wine. His joining The Test Kitchen as Beverage Manager and Head Sommelier in 2015 was a natural fit. Like attracts like. When asked (after joining The Test Kitchen) what it’s like being Head Sommelier of the 28th best restaurant in the world (World’s 50 Best Restaurant Awards 2015), Tinashe was ebullient. “It’s surreal.”

“When I first walked in and interacted with the team, I was surprised by how normal it was.” “Sure the pace is fast and the concentration is intense, but there is a really great vibe in the kitchen. There is this sense of excitement for example about perfectly smoking bone marrow for 8 hours.”

Yet, he is modest, describing himself as a casual sommelier and is adamant that there are great wines to be had in any price bracket. “The best of us don’t want to flog the most expensive bottle of wine.” “The challenge and the pleasure lies in suggesting a bottle of wine that the client will like,” he adds.

“That sort of passion and dedication has a way of rubbing off on you. It’s exciting and scary at times but mostly it’s fun and challenging. It’s amazing.”

Tinashe also feels that if people move away from the pretentiousness of wine; if they dare to stop following the crowd, they will enjoy wine more.

Nyamudoka is no stranger to 5 star establishments having worked and trained at The Roundhouse, Camps Bay, Nobu and Reuben’s at One&Only Cape Town (where in 2013 he won the award for best Wine Steward in the Cape Legends Inter-Hotel Challenge) and then a 14 month stint at The Oyster Box Hotel in Umhlanga Rocks. His appointment by Luke Dale-Roberts to join the dynamic team at internationally acclaimed The Test Kitchen indicates the respect that Tinashe commands in the food and wine industry.

According to him, “People should not feel intimidated.” “Not feel inferior if you don’t pick up the same flavours as others during a wine tasting. It’s about your own experience of the wine.” “Taste it honestly. Your own experience of the wine is true,” Tinashe continues. And while he himself is partial to a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon, it is a particular Chenin, the Rudera Robusto 2006 that he will remember for the rest of his life.

Tinashe’s other passions are reggae music, Kentucky Straight Bourbons and watching sport. Recently he has developed a taste and a passion for craft beers, but wine beats them all. Every time. Last year at the 2016 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards, Tinashe walked away with the Eat Out Wine Service Award.

Vital Introduces Delicious On-The-Go Snacks Our increasingly busy lifestyles mean less and less time for balanced meals, with grab-and-go snacks supplementing our diets. But, says Andrea du Plessis, nutritional expert at Vital Health Foods, many snacks contain large quantities of hidden sugars, fats and salt, and little nutritional value in terms of vitamins and fibre. That’s why the company has introduced tasty snacking options that also ensure you get the nutrients you need, no matter how pushed for time you are. Vital Health Foods’ bars and bites and air-popped rice crisps tick several boxes as the ideal on-the-go snack. The Vital bars and bites contain 12 vitamins at 100% Nutrient Reference Values (NRV), which is your daily recommended nutritional intake. They also have no added sugar or preservatives, and are gluten free. Vital bars and bites come in three delicious flavours: cashew and coconut; almond and cocoa; and seed, almond and cinnamon. Ideal for those who suffer from sensitivities to gluten and preservatives, they’re also perfect to pack in school lunchboxes or as an after-workout treat.

Air-popped rice crisps, made from wholegrain brown and white rice contain less than 400 kilojoules per 20g serving. They are also free of gluten, trans fat, added MSG, preservatives and aspartame, burst with flavour and are a great alternative to potato crisps. They come in three mouth-watering variants: fruit chutney, sweet and spicy pepper salsa, and cream cheese and chives. The shift to a healthier lifestyle includes not only getting daily exercise, sufficient hydration and enough sleep, but also smart diet choices. Add to this our increased nutritional demands as a result of a fast-paced and pressured way of life, and the depleting effects of alcohol, smoking and the use of chronic medication, and it becomes obvious why naturally healthy and functional snacks are becoming increasingly popular. And smart snacking is actually good for you. Not only do smart snacks add valuable nutrients that are scarce in staple foods, they’re easier on the digestive system, which copes better with smaller portions eaten at intervals throughout the day than single, large, heavy meals.

Local Durbanville artist, Leonie Brown of Life Art School, has started to change the lives of adults who were told they would never become artists. One such story shared is that of Natasha Nel, once a law firm owner in Russia for 13 years and now a full time artist in Cape Town! She credits her inspiring and fulfilling career change to Leonie. “You do not need any experience in art,” explains Leonie Brown of Life Art School. “In fact, it is better if you do not have any experience at all. I am so proud of the work that my students are producing!” Leonie’s adult art classes are hosted by Meerendal Wine Farm on the back roads of Durbanville. Attending just one, 3 hour art class a week for a year will teach you everything you need to know about art technique. You will be creating beautiful masterpieces in no time. What’s more is that Meerendal now display art in their wine tasting room which is not limited to famous artists. Your artwork could be on display! Photo L-R: Ian Smith with soloist Adelia Douw

Parklands College Lock Is Head And Shoulders Above The Rest South Africa has a distinct rugby culture; it is embedded into our youth from a young age. Young boys begin to learn the fundamentals of the game from the very beginning of their school careers and this is how the country has produced some of the most exciting talents that the sport has to offer.

For Ian Ketwanga, this was not the case however, despite being one of DHL Western Province’s most exciting young talents, he has only been playing the game for three years. A giant in stature, Ian towers over the rest of his rugby class at Parklands College at 2 meters tall, he made the switch from playing basketball and soccer to rugby 3 years ago, and has never looked back. His love for rugby is second to none, and he will not stop until he reaches his dream of representing South Africa at the highest level, in green and gold. Ketwanga knows that he must take it one step at a time, and that begins with making the DHL Western Province Coca-Cola Craven Week team. Ian has been part the Coca-Cola Youth Weeks tournaments since he made the switch to Rugby, having also played for the u16 DHL Western Province team in 2015. It is safe to say the sky is the limit for this humble off-the-field/terrifying onthe-field giant. DHL Western Province is historically one of the most successful franchises in the country, with some of the biggest sporting schools in the province producing the majority of the talent over the years, but as seen with Ian Ketwanga, it would be unwise to discount the players coming from the smaller rugby schools, because sometimes, small can make very big.

1 country, 1 golfer, 1 caddie, 82 days, 1,850km, par 14,000 An early morning tee-off from the base camp of the highest and most western point in Mongolia, a 3-wood strike aiming directly into the widest fairway in the world. This will be the start of a mammoth 82-day journey for a golfer and his caddie, to complete the longest hole in golf, and raise funds for Laureus Sport for Good. The concept may sound far-fetched, but when you learn that the brain behind it is South African adventurer Ron Rutland, it all starts to make sense. In the build-up to the 2015 Rugby World Cup, Ron cycled, unsupported, through every single country in Africa, then Europe, and on to Brighton, only to watch his nation famously lose their opening fixture of the tournament against Japan.

Ron and Adam have estimated that they’ll lose anything up to 400 balls during the course of the challenge, and using an app, developed for them by Dimension Data, they’ll record every shot via GPS. This technology will allow supporters to track the challenge live via their website. These balls, sponsored by TaylorMade, will be sold off for a recommended minimum donation to the beneficiary charities of $100. An online leader board, based on the distance covered by each ball, combined with integrated social media alerts, will ensure donors stay engaged and informed throughout the duration of the expedition.

Now he’s swapping his bike for his golf bag and Ron is off to caddie across Mongolia, where he will be joined by his friend and scratch golfer, Northern Irishman Adam Rolston. The friends reconnected in Kenya, where Adam, who was playing rugby for Hong Kong at the time, heard a motivational speech given by Ron. Inspired by the story of Ron’s 2015 adventure, Adam approached him with a desire to seek a challenge of his own. After only an hour together, they came to the decision that Adam’s passion for golf and Ron’s experience would merge perfectly into a large-scale golfing adventure. Teeing off from the base camp of Khüiten Peak on 28 June 2017, their aim will be to reach the 18th green of Mt Bogd Golf Club, on the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar on 17 September. Their journey will include a 12-day desert trek and multiple mountain climbs, all while searching for their own food and water. As if the sporting challenge wasn’t enough, the pair will also have to contend with the country’s extreme weather conditions. In what has been billed as a ‘par 14,000, the pair will follow the rules, as set by R&A, in a bid to set a world record for the longest hole in golf. At the same time, Adam and Ron will also raise funds for Laureus Sport for Good, which supports over 100 programmes globally and who use the power of sport to end violence, discrimination and disadvantage, as well as the SA Golf Development Board (SAGDB), who work tirelessly to develop the game of golf among all communities across South Africa.

While Adam will continuously strike the ball along their route, Ron will haul a cart full of over 100kg of equipment for the expedition, including five clubs: a 3-wood, a 4-iron, an 8-iron, a wedge and a putter. The pair recently spent time preparing for the expedition in Mongolia, despite cultural differences and language barriers, and were embraced by the local communities, who showed excitement and support for their upcoming challenge.
