WORKING HARD TO COUNTER SEASONALITY
RETIREMENT Page 5

Cape Town and the Western Cape buzzes with thousands of international and domestic tourists from about November to April, with a particular visitor frenzy during December. But, when it gets to the Cape’s winter months, things are a lot quieter. And, much like in Game of Thrones, ‘winter is coming’. This seasonality has been a thorn in the side of tourism businesses for many years. This is why the City has established a partnership that brings together a number of organisations with a focus on promoting tourism in the city.
Plans to Maintain Investor Confidence In Western Cape
Wesgro hosted an engagement with various stakeholders to set out the steps Cape Town and the Western Cape are taking to maintain investor confidence in South Africa and the region, following the recent credit ratings downgrades. It was led by City of Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille and Western Cape Economic Opportunities Minister Alan Winde, and featured key insights and strategies from Wesgro and Accelerate Cape Town. Attendees directly engaged these economic leaders and were able to discuss some of the challenges and successes they have experienced, contributing to the province’s plan to support local businesses and attract investment in order to boost the economy.
Fedhasa, Wesgro, Cape Town Tourism and Accelerate Cape Town are working together to find ways such as putting together unique travel packages and events to attract visitors during the quieter winter months in order to combat the impact of seasonality on the local tourist industry.
Wesgro CEO Tim Harris said: “Considering recent economic developments within South Africa, we felt that it was crucial to unite stakeholders and craft a strategy that would maintain investor confidence in the Cape and the greater South African economy.”

HOW DID THE KILLER WHALES OUTSMART THE GREAT WHITE SHARKS?

When three great white sharks mysteriously washed ashore along the coast in Gansbaai, researchers weren’t sure what to think. But after doing necropsies (animal autopsies) on all three sharks, the researchers identified a possible culprit. All of the sharks were missing their livers, and one was missing its heart. It’s likely that an orca, also known as a killer whale, attacked the sharks and ate their organs. The great white shark is one of the ocean’s most powerful predators, yet it is sometimes prey for orcas that killed several of the formidable creatures off South Africa’s coast this month. The rare necropsies conducted on the three carcasses that washed ashore show how orcas dominate the marine food
chain at the expense of great white sharks, whose ferocious reputation (thanks partly to the 1975 movie “Jaws”) belies their vulnerability to shark nets, fishing, poaching, pollution— and the biggest member of the dolphin family. Orcas, which also face human threats, have a softer image (the 1993 film “Free Willy” helped) due to their intelligence and accessibility at water parks. Ingrid Visser, who has studied killer whales for nearly 20 years, said orcas used their powerful tails to create strong underwater currents that forced the sharks to the surface, then stunned them. Wesley Noble, Head of Changing Business for Good at Virgin Active, says these measures come on top of a range of actions which the clubs have already taken including shutting off high pressure sensation showers, educating members and cutting water usage in every area of the business.
Noble says the company has been implementing a programme of water conservation across all of its clubs for several years, and consumption is down 11% nationally on a year-on-year basis, but the situation in the Cape “has really focussed our minds and we calculate we’ve saved as much as 10.5 million litres in the region which is the equivalent of 7 extra glasses of drinking water for every resident in the Western Cape.” Continue Reading Page 3

The five ways that were mentioned are as follows: An aligned communications plan across Western Cape to counter negative perceptions about investing in the region. Building Cape Town’s brand as a world-class investment destination, through the City of Cape Town’s ‘Invest Cape Town’ initiative. More than 70 tourism, trade and investment promotion missions abroad to be conducted by Wesgro in 2017 - selling the region as an investment destination, and helping local businesses access international markets. Doubling-down on Project Khulisa, the Western Cape Government’s economic strategy, to ensure policy certainty. Launch a new Investor Centre, in conjunction with the DTI’s InvestSA initiative, as a collaborative one-stop shop for investors into Cape Town and the Western Cape. “The City of Cape Town will continue attracting investment by creating an enabling environment for job creation and economic growth. We will do this through investing R6.8 billion in the next year on infrastructure development through road upgrades, electricity projects and expanding our broadband roll out amongst others. Key to this work is a strong, sustained focus on clean, corruption-free governance as these are the primary factors which investors consider when choosing where to invest their money. The Auditor-General announced that Cape Town was the only municipality in the country to achieve a clean audit for the 2015/16 financial year.” “Economic growth is at the top of my agenda and we will work relentlessly to ensure that we do what we can to grow the economy and contribute towards job creation. Through our Invest Cape Town brand initiative we are actively promoting Cape Town internationally as a forward-looking, globally competitive business city. We are going to the world to say we are more than just an iconic tourist city, we are open for business,” said Mayor De Lille.

Cape Water Crisis - Health Clubs Turn Off The Steam In response to the serious water crisis in the Western Cape, Virgin Active health clubs in the region have closed their saunas and steam rooms and have stopped the filling of swimming pools. The latter action may mean the closure of pools when the level is no longer safe for swimming.

“Despite the negative economic impact of national events, the Western Cape has continued to add jobs to the economy.”
“We have the lowest narrow and broad unemployment rate, because we have a focussed approach to growing the economy through our Project Khulisa, which is seeking to boost tourism, agri-processing, oil and gas sectors. We are also driving the growth of the country’s green economy with 60% of the country’s green project developers. We selected securing an affordable and reliable energy supply as a game changer. Like energy, water is critical for economic growth and we are continuing to find solutions to our water shortage.” “We’re also committed to creating an enabling environment for entrepreneurs to thrive, and our Red Tape Reduction Unit has assisted 6 000 businesses since it was launched in 2011. To ensure that our young people are able to take advantage of economic opportunities, we also selected skills as a game changer and we set a target of introducing 32 500 qualified apprentices into the labour market by 2019. Since last year, 7 500 young people successfully completed their work-placebased learning programmes in the occupations required by the priority growth sectors of the province.” “While challenging, the current economic situation offers opportunities for innovative entrepreneurs. The cost of imports will increase, and we’re also seeing a rise in demand for consumers wanting to know the full value chain of their products. These trends provide a space for local entrepreneurs to package their products with authentic stories being the unique selling point. We know the weakening rand will also make our tourism offering and our agri-processed exports more competitive,” added Minister Winde. “By growing the regional economy through increased tourism, trade and investment, Cape Town and the Western Cape intends to help the economy recover from the negative impact of the credit ratings downgrades,” concluded Harris. As the agency responsible for tourism, trade and investment promotion, Wesgro will do everything it can to inspire confidence in the Cape economy, so that we continue to attract high levels of investment which grows the economy and creates jobs.

The Cape Town Flower Show Delayed Due To Drought In respect of the Western Cape’s worst drought for over 100 years, Growth Events, owners of the Cape Town Flower Show, announces that the 2017 show will be deferred until October 2018. Show Director, Karey Evett explains: “We believe we should bow to the industry’s challenges in these difficult times. The Cape Town Flower Show celebrates the Cape’s floral kingdom and supports the landscaping, horticultural and green industries and it is imperative that we demonstrate due responsibility.” “We think it’s critical that the landscaping industry has time to adapt to the crisis and to use their creativity in garden design that would not put any strain on our water reserves.” Also, we want to match our 2016 inaugural show with a similarly successful and abundant show, because it’s important not to dilute the show’s appeal to participants and visitors.”The four-day show will take place at GrandWest in October 2018. Group Technical Events and Entertainment Manager at GrandWest, Gavin Taylor says: “We echo and support the message given by the Cape Town Flower Show.”
“Our pride in hosting this show is matched by our commitment to being waterwise and sustainable in all our operations and we salute the show for its decision to defer the event until 2018.”
Working Hard To Counter Seasonality (Continue from Page 1) Some of the ways these organisations have come together to address seasonality include partnering to establish a new golf festival, focusing on promoting winter events, attracting business tourism with conferences hosted during winter, driving campaigns to encourage increased domestic travel during July to August.
Nature-lovers have whales visiting from June with the Hermanus Kalfiefees (9-13 August). For those with an interest in culture, music, visit the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival 2017 (10 July - 6 August 2017), the Klein Karoo Klassique in Oudtshoorn (11 - 13 August), and Open Design Cape Town 2017 (13-15 August).
Wine-lovers and foodies are spoilt for choice with the Knysna Oyster Festival (7-16 July 2017), Franschhoek Bastille Festival (15-16 July), Robertson Slow Food & Wine Festival (4-6 August 2017), and the Hermanus Wine and Food Festival (11-12 August 2017).
Golf enthusiasts will be attracted to the inaugural Cape Town Golf Festival (August 21 – 26), where 120 keen golfers will have six days together to enjoy their passion and to experience the Cape countryside with tournaments at the Milnerton, Durbanville, Clovelly and Royal Cape golf courses. The Cape Town Golf Festival is a prime opportunity to showcase that outdoor activities are just as enjoyable during winter as during any other time of the year. “Measures to address seasonality by these industry bodies have already had a positive impact, especially in terms of prolonging the high season,” says Wesgro’s Chief Marketing Officer, Judy Lain. “The high season now extends over a longer period than previously. “Traditionally, December and January were the peak season months, but we are now experiencing significant visitor numbers from about October until April, and this certainly benefits service-providers in the tourism industry.” “No doubt, this follows the improvement in air access to the city, as well as successful marketing initiatives,” she says.
Chapman’s Peak Drive Closed Indefinitely Chapman’s Peak Drive has been closed after approximately 15 m3 of rock came down on the Noordhoek end of the pass, causing significant damage to two catch fences and the road surface. Geotechnical engineers have visited the site, and together with Entilini, are formulating and implementing the action plans to repair the damaged infrastructure. It is anticipated that the road will be closed for a period three to four weeks, which will be weather dependent. The pass is still in a vulnerable state after the 2015 fires, with the vegetation still not having recovered due to the drought over the past two winters. The pass is being managed conservatively during periods of rainfall and strong winds throughout winter, as the risks of rockfalls and mudslides are heightened during adverse weather. When the road is closed, motorists are advised to use Ou Kaapse Weg. Regular updates are available via the Variable Message Sign (VMS) system, Twitter or Facebook. Businesses Urged To Assess Risk Management Policies Post Cape Storm Following the devastation caused by the Western Cape storm - resulting in significant damage to infrastructure and thousands forced from their homes in the Western Cape - business owners are now counting the cost of interruption to their operations, following the worst natural disaster in the region for 30 years. In light of this, Annelie Smith, Corporate Executive at RBS (Risk Benefit Solutions Pty Ltd), an authorised financial services provider, encourages local business owners throughout the country to review their insurance and risk management policies, in order to avoid extreme financial losses, as the winter season sets in. “Even though most business property insurance policies automatically include weather-related losses like flood damage, it is up to the business owner to ensure that potential damages are contained as much as possible.”
Smith points out that the #Knysnafires may also have huge implications for businesses’ insurance policies. “Many businesses are opening their premises up to relief efforts and as shelter for displaced people. While it is great for businesses to assist during this difficult time, it is vital to understand that your risks change. Relief activities fall outside of the description of the business, which means that insurers could repudiate any claims if it results in damages.” “The correct way to deal with this sort of scenario is to inform your broker that you are participating in relief efforts. The broker will then be able to negotiate with your insurer to temporarily include this new risk in your business insurance policy. It is ultimately the responsibility of the business owner to know which questions to ask and which boxes to tick, to ensure they do not put the business at risk. All policy holders need to be familiar with the exclusions applicable to their policy, as it could be catastrophic if you think that you are insured against a risk that is excluded on your policy.” She notes that while adverse weather conditions cannot be prevented, the impact it may have on businesses can be minimised if the correct type of policies and procedures are in place. “As weather patterns become more unpredictable in South Africa, the need for businesses to ensure that policies are in place is now more crucial than ever before,” Smith concludes.
Swellendam Community Upskilled “Business owners need to be able to show to their insurers that they did everything in their ability to avoid losses, or they stand the risk of having their claims repudiated,” she says. During the Cape Storm we have seen major business interruptions - a Shopping Mall had to close its doors for the day due to safety concerns, and part of the roof of one of the shops in another Mall collapsed, due to strong winds and had to be closed. “It is interesting to note that the loss of revenue as a result of a shopping Mall closure is not insurable, since the shops did not suffer any direct losses as a result of the storm. Insurers are more likely to pay out for the damage at the shop where the roof collapsed, since the storm did measurable physical damage to the building.” Smith adds that poor risk management policies leave a business vulnerable to major long-term setbacks, or, even worse, insolvency and bankruptcy. “While a business may manage to survive an initial loss, the true risks lie in how long it takes a business to recover to full operation. This is why managing risk and -June Winter 2017.pdf 1 2017/05/27 11:12:02 AM having A5Henri'sAd recovery and backup plans in place is just as important as being able to cover your losses.

through Corobrik Bricklaying Programme Corobrik’s dedication to improve the lives of disadvantaged community members through training programmes continues to grow with the implementation of a nineweek bricklayer course. Some 12 Swellendam community members completed the training course in March, empowered with skills for suitable employment in the construction industry. “We have been successfully running a number of NQF-level bricklayer training courses out of our three training centres for a number of years now with fantastic results achieved. In our continuous effort to meet the needs of these community members, we recently introduced the nine-week bricklayer programme which is specifically aimed at creating employment opportunities for local residents by enhancing the public facilities at small, rural towns,” said Christie van Niekerk, Corobrik Manager, Western Cape. The three-year project, which started in January 2015, aims to create jobs, provide skills’ training and unlock new enterprise opportunities to the benefit of the disadvantaged communities of the Swellendam Municipal area, while growing and sustaining the local tourism and related economies through enhanced destination marketing and management. There is a particular focus on improving the lives of women, the youth, the disabled, the elderly and those who have never had employment. The 12 candidates sponsored for the training programme were taught bricklaying practices, as well as life skills, which would enable them to establish their own businesses.

Milestone for Hisense
THE NEWSPAPER
Gus The Bus Makes Waves
on millionth manufacturing milestone
The City of Cape Town congratulates Hisense on the significant milestone of producing its millionth television and millionth fridge at its factory in Atlantis. Hisense has become somewhat of an anchor investment into the Atlantis Industrial Area – an area which is witnessing an upsurge in manufacturing activity. It has been four years since Hisense opened its factory in this area. It currently employs about 500 full-time employees. “We are truly grateful that Hisense chose Cape Town as their base for operations into the rest of Africa and wish them great success with their expansion plans in extending their production lines.” Hisense is exporting to 13 African countries from its Cape Town facility, enhancing the city’s reputation as a forward-looking, globally competitive business city. Notwithstanding South Africa going into a technical recession, Cape Town remains a highly attractive investment destination. The City government was intricately involved in helping to facilitate the investment by Hisense more than four years ago and stands ready to facilitate further investments.
Yvonne Ritter a proud Betty’s Bay resident was one of the remarkable stories that FMI uncovered as part of the #21 Lives campaign. She received a special visit from FMI’s newest team member, Gus the Bus, as part of the campaign that celebrates FMI’s 21st year of business. Gus the Bus is travelling nationwide to visit 21 inspiring people (and policy holders) that have gone on to do amazing things despite enduring serious life challenges from unexpected injury or illness. Ritter is a spunky hairstylist based at the beautiful Erinvale Hotel and Spa with an infectious energy that draws people to her and her salon time and time again. Eleven years ago, at the age of 52, Yvonne had a horrific accident when she lost control of her car and went over a cliff on her way home from work one evening. The accident resulted in her needing a neck fusion operation that kept her out of work for six weeks! Ritter believes she made a very wise decision in taking out the FMI policy and she is delighted with being chosen as one of the stand out stories that is being told by FMI. “I feel really privileged to be part of this incredible campaign and hopefully convince others who read my story about the importance of protecting themselves and those who depend upon them by taking out income protection cover. If my story can help even just one person to be more responsible about their future - then I’m happy”, stated Ritter.
The City’s 2012 Economic Growth Strategy has several key intervention areas at the core of the City’s investment attraction efforts. These include: reducing red tape, creating a one-stop-shop in my office, rolling out a business incentives programme, improving Cape Town’s reputation as a serious investment destination by establishing Invest Cape Town, and focusing on infrastructure investment to create a crowding - in effect with the private sector. Some of these interventions include an extensive broadband roll-out, pursuing energy security, and growing air access to increase direct flights to Cape Town. These efforts have been recognised internationally as Cape Town was ranked number 21 in the world on the list of cities with the best foreign direct investment strategies by fDi Intelligence – a division of the Financial Times.
Being a business owner who has staff that rely on Ritter for their livelihood, she further explained how essential it is to think ahead so that you have a plan in place should you be impacted by injury or illness, because this will have a direct effect on the lives of your employees as well as yourself. Ritter was also able to look after her staff while she was healing, thanks to the payouts that FMI had provided and she could still keep the business financially afloat until she was able to return to work. “The #21lives campaign focuses on identifying and bringing to light the stories of remarkable people such as Yvonne, who have despite all odds, continued to reach their dreams and live life to the fullest. We are passionate about protecting people’s lives and future dreams, as even a temporary illness or accident can seriously de-rail your life. We look forward to shining a spotlight on other amazing South Africans who have gone on to do great things whilst we’ve been able to protect their dreams and pay their income,” stated Brad Toerien, FMI’s CEO. Pet Cottages - A Kennel with a difference! “I have tried various kennels for my animals over the years and never been all that happy to leave them there. In fact, I have sometimes been miserable at the thought of it. I have been disappointed at all the facilities I tried. Either the infrastructure was unappealing or I didn’t like the staff that were going to be doing the day to day handling and cleaning. Surely someone must know! I phoned PETPort, national and international pet transporters, who immediately told me that they had found ‘Pet Cottages’ and they now house all their dogs awaiting onward transport, and highly recommended them.” “A 25-minute drive finishing along the tree lined R304 and then 200m of well gravelled road, and I was confronted by an oasis of evergreen trees and grass.”
Emergency - A veterinarian is available 24/7, but should any dog need the vet’s attention, the owners are contacted first to discuss the situation. Hygiene is a very important factor to Truus. The kennels are high pressure hosed every day and the best disinfectants are used. Bedding is washed regularly and dogs that need it get brushed too, not just for cosmetic purposes, but for the well-being of the animal. “When I arrived Truus was playing with a pair of long term boarding dogs (3 months) in the exercise area; she returned them to their ‘cottage-kennels’, and then showed me around. Really nice! Large runs, clean and well maintained with trees providing shade over the individual kennels which were big and spacious. Clement (the dog superintendent) was there and it was clear that he had a good feeling and understanding of his charges.” “Altogether Impressive!! I was sold.” – Dog Owner Nic and Truus de Waal have set up a boarding kennel establishment at Pet Cottages that seeks to make your dog actually enjoy his stay in a “cottage-kennel,” and eventually leave in as good a condition - physically as well as in temperament - as when he arrived. SERVICES Environment - Comfort, space and security for the dogs are their priority. The pictures tell the story. Each kennel has a large, sunny open area with a cottage to sleep and keep warm. There is shade from trees for each kennel. Large communal grassed and sand (which the dogs enjoy as though at the beach) areas in the middle and edges of all the kennels provide lots of space for dogs let out three times a day to exercise. This is the space in which they run and get love and attention from Truus and the staff. Goats, peacocks and other poultry wander close to the fences and provide the dogs with lots of excitement and interest. Boredom and loneliness is not an option at Pet Cottages. Food - The dogs are fed vet quality food with a high percentage of protein. They never leave thinner than when they arrived (unless over-fat through lack of exercise at home, in which case it’s a healthy weight loss). Truus does her best to make the nervous ones eat, by adding on her chicken or other gravy. She throws away more uneaten food than she cares to.
The rule of house is that all dogs have to be fully vaccinated and treated for ticks and fleas before admission. Exercise and play are an important part of a dog’s stay at Pet Cottages. They are let out, sometimes in groups of similar age, size and temperament. Updates - Owners are sent regular photographs of their dogs and reports on how they are doing. Any pets, excluding the likes of snakes and lizards, which are outside their sphere of knowledge, are welcome. Birds, rabbits, rats etc. have all been owned by them at some stage, so they are familiar with their needs and more importantly enjoy them.
Pet Cottages has established a reputation as a kennel with a difference and is now used by PETPort (www.petport.co.za) who are national and International pet transporters, for kennelling dogs awaiting onward transport. Pet Cottages is located on an 8ha smallholding in the Philadelphia/Klein Dassenberg area of the Western Cape, 40km from the V&A Waterfront and 40km from Durbanville. IMPROVE WORKPLACE PRODUCTIVITY & SAFETY
The Neuromechanics unit is well placed to play a leading role in developing this relatively new field in South Africa – it houses state-of-the-art equipment and is staffed by a team of three full-time biomedical engineers. Unlike many of the other CAF units which house large-scale instruments for studying material samples on a microscopic scale and in highly controlled conditions, the Neuromechanics unit specializes in non-invasive technologies and techniques for assessing overall physical function in both indoor and outdoor settings. The unit’s high-speed motion capture systems are capable of capturing the threedimensional posture and movement of the skeletal system in great detail during physical activity. It is also possible to assess three-dimensional ground reaction forces or pressure patterns on the feet during standing, jumping, walking or running tasks. This motion and force data can be combined to perform computational modelling of mechanical loading in individual skeletal joints.

Stellenbosch University recently established a new unit for Neuromechanics (also known as the Human Movement Analysis facility) within the Central Analytical Facilities (CAF) to support a wide range of human movement research in healthcare, engineering and sport. Neuromechanics is an interdisciplinary field that integrates neuroscience and biomechanics to understand how the human nervous system and musculoskeletal system interact to control movements. Knowledge of how human movement is controlled and organized in different contexts play a critical role in efforts to improve the health and well-being of society in a number of fields. For example, it can support the development of assistive devices, surgical procedures and clinical services for persons with impaired physical function due to aging, injury, disability or disease. It can also be used to improve performance in sport and exercise through optimized training and coaching, or to improve workplace productivity and safety through optimized ergonomics.
The unit also provides wireless sensors for kinesiological electromyography (EMG: assessment of electrical activity in the muscles) and high-density electroencephalography (EEG: assessment of electrical activity in the brain), as well as mobile cardiopulmonary exercise testing (assessment of heart and lung function). All of this equipment can be operated simultaneously in a time-synchronized manner. These capabilities are unique in the country and will enable world-class student training and more advanced experiments. The Neuromechanics unit has operated from an established laboratory on the Tygerberg campus for two years, and has just expanded by opening a large brand new laboratory facility at the Coetzenberg Sports Science Complex in Stellenbosch. This new facility has been custom-built for neuromechanics research and is also one-of-a-kind in the country. Therefore, since the unit already facilitates a diversity of projects from different University departments and campuses (Physiotherapy, Biomedical Engineering, Sports Science, Orthopaedics), it can play an important future role in driving scientific excellence and collaboration between research groups, Maties Sport and Campus Health. KEEP FIT AND WARM THIS WINTER WITH ZONE FITNESS
Looking to keep warm through exercise this winter? So you might, as the Western Cape has just experienced one of the severest storms in recorded history, while the northern reaches of the country will start battening down the hatches as cooler temperatures begin to circulate. Of course, when temperatures drop, there’s the temptation to eat more and exercise less, but here are some handy tips to stay fit even when you’re braving the cold. Invest in active wear that keeps you warm - If you’re used to exercising when the sun’s out, you might only have a pair of shorts and vests on when you’re gearing up for your workout. Cold weather equals cold muscles, and if you’re not careful, it’s easy to pull or strain a muscle. As per Huffington Post.com: “Cold weather certainly can increase your risk of straining or tearing something. That’s because the lower temps cause our muscles to tighten a little more.” Start shopping for running jackets, hyper warm tights and sweatshirts that keep the cold out. Work out with a friend - Gym motivation goes through the roof any time you enlist the help of a training partner says WomenStuff.co.za. By working out with a friend, you’re more likely to stick to your routine, and you’ll find it more fun too. Settle into a routine and you’ll find the winter cold is less of a reason to put off your session. Eat well - Health24 advises snacking on “complex carbs”, like fruit and veggies. The old favourite, chicken soup, is also safe to indulge in, as it doesn’t feature cream. Further, remember to keep hydrated. Colder weather strips your skin of moisture so it’s important to drink the recommended 8 glasses of water a day. Water has the added benefit of keeping the urge to snack in check.
Prepare your meals ahead of time - In winter, one of the greatest barriers to exercise willpower. It’s cold, there’s a biting wind and rain is falling. Not only is the temptation to eat greater, but easily accessible food at your fingertips are more appealing still. The problem with easy food is that it’s very often processed, low in nutritional value and high in sugar. Prepare meals in the evening before so that when hunger inevitably strike, you can snack guilt-free. Look for good gym deals - Many clubs run cheap membership deals during winter to entice people to brave the cold and get active. Zone Fitness offers a Winter Warmer special under R200 a month that also includes a free upgrade to their premium membership bracket, Superclub (allowing members access to any of the 20+ gyms nationwide). CREATIVE BLOCK - NEW LOOK The new, refreshed Creative Block packaging is inspired by the age-old craft of letterpress. The simple, modern and bold design is true to the craft and passion that goes into each of these award-winning blends. Named and inspired by the Spier Arts Academy project, our winemakers combine grapes from different vineyard blocks to curate unique tastes – always so much more than the sum of their parts.

PEOPLE
AGENTS OF CHANGE AT SPIER WE’RE COMMITTED TO NURTURING A POSITIVE, ETHICAL AND EMPOWERING WORKPLACE FOR OUR TEAM.
“Our various team initiatives go to the very core of the way we do business: they’re manifestations of Spier’s commitment to having a positive social and environmental impact,” says Heidi Newton-King, Spier’s Director of Sustainability and Huma Resources.
LESLEY JOERMAT TREE-PRENEURS MANAGER
The Tree-preneurs Project Leader at the farm, Lesley Joemat, works hard to save fuel and electricity as she actively recycles and conserves the environment. She felt motivated to use her ILS to buy a bicycle. “I felt it was important for my health and fitness to use the bike when collecting seeds for our nursery on the farm. Reducing my own carbon footprint, mixing exercise, the outdoors and work was perfect for me.”
“WE RECOGNISE THAT EACH EMPLOYEE IS UNIQUE WHICH IS WHY WE WANT TO SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF EMPLOYEES BEYOND THE NORMAL SCOPE OF EMPLOYMENT,” says Heidi.
BEN MAY MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT
Maintenance Assistant Ben May says: “I feel privileged that the ILS meant I could complete a welding course and then buy welding equipment which I use on home improvements and my work benefits from my improved skills.”
One leading initiative was the introduction of an Individual Learning Spend (ILS) for each employee’s personal and career development. Implemented in 2010, this unique initiative allocates training funds to employees to be used towards developing intellectual, emotional, physical or spiritual skills and knowledge.
THE SPIER HOTEL WAS ONE OF THE FIRST IN THE COUNTRY TO BE AWARDED FAIR TRADE IN TOURISM ACCREDITATION IN 2003.
JOYLENE CORNELIUS WELLNESS CO-COORDINATOR
FOLLOWING ITS 2013 AUDIT, SPIER RECEIVED A 10-YEAR CERTIFICATION AWARD, AN EXCELLENCE IN THE WORKPLACE AWARD AND AN EXCELLENCE IN ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP AWARD.
What initially started out as a wellness challenge at work has spurred Joylene Cornelius to take up walking and running. “By being more active, I feel I can be more creative in my role as Wellness CoCoordinator if I lead by example and take my health more seriously. I have decided to use my ILS to invest in a TomTom fitness tracker watch. It’s a motivation tool for me to earn Discovery Vitality points and also keep track of how I am doing – whether I am running, swimming, walking, or working out.”

WINE
A NEW LOOK FOR ONE OF OUR FAVOURITES ENJOY OUR AWARD-WINNING CREATIVE BLOCK BLENDS
“That’s just a guide,” says Spier Cellar Master Frans Smit. ‘There are no strict rules, and wine doesn’t always have to be had with food. I like to keep a bottle of Creative Block red for after the last guest has left. Savouring a glass all on its own, in my study when all is quiet, and without any food at all, is a more contemplative taste experience for me.’
A NEW CAPE WINE MASTER! Anton Swarts, a member of our winemaking team, is now a Cape Wine Master – one of only 100 in the country to receive this prestigious qualification – the wine industry’s highest.
Rich, juicy, meaty stews and casseroles are on the cards for long lazy winter lunches and dinners with friends. So what wines do you have up your sleeve, to match your cooking? To partner with meaty winter stews, casseroles and pies, the sommeliers and winemakers of Spier agreed wholeheartedly: Creative Block 3 or Creative Block 5. These two award-winning red blends from Spier has recently been repackaged and brings a retro-modern design feel to the table. The boldly classic letterpress-style numbers on the labels represent how many varietals have gone into the blend. This, along with the textured off-white paper and a Spier crest in gold foil, emphasises Spier’s history of producing handcrafted, high-quality wines.
Congratulations, MECHE! Wine Shop wine educator Meche Cupido obtained high marks upon completing the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits with high marks Congratulations Meche!.
Creative Block is a range inspired by a Spier art project that combines different artworks by different artists, to come up with something altogether different. And that’s exactly how blends are made. By combining different varietals to come up with completely new and unusual tastes. As a rule of thumb, you’d pair a rich, complex blend – like Creative Block 3 or 5 - with similarly rich, complex food. So the wine doesn’t overpower the food, and vice versa.

ART
SPIER’S TOP 10 ARTWORKS SPIER HAS A LONG HISTORY OF SUPPORTING AND SHOWCASING THE ARTS. The farm is home to one of the largest collections of contemporary South African art in the country. Many of these are displayed in public areas such as the Manor House and Wine Tasting venue where they can be enjoyed by our visitors. Here are 5 of our favourites.
1.
1. The Dying Slave by Marco Cianfanelli
Location: On the walkway between the hotel and conference venue Mosaic – 9 columns of 4,2 x 0,6 x 0,3m each When seen from a specific vantage point, the nine columns line up to reveal the complete image of The Dying Slave. Designed by Cianfanelli, the image was inspired by Michelangelo’s well-known artwork featuring a male slave in the throes of dying. The artwork consists of 225 000 handcut tesserae (mosaic pieces), created by the Spier Arts Academy.
2.
3.
2. Recycled chandelier by Heath Nash
Location: Tasting Room Glass bottles The chandelier above the Tasting Room’s counter was created by artist Heath Nash from 334 recycled wine bottles, and weighs about 370kg. The visually striking work embodies Spier’s commitment to a sustainable future. 3. Altered Yarns by Tamlin Blake
Location: Eight Restaurant Newspaper This collection of tapestry artworks was created by Tamlin Blake, a participant of the Spier Arts Patronage Programme. Using a homemade spindle, she spun dyed sheets of newspaper cut into thin strips to create a textured yarn. Mirroring this intricate process, Blake’s works explore the many ways in which our lives are shaped by the stories of others. 4. Vortex I by Richard Forbes
Location: On the lawns near the wine collection point Painted steel – 4100 x 4500 mm This installation is a physical expression of energy, unseen force and the wind that makes a storm to create a vortex. It symbolises the twist of the fabric of life which could be a portal to an alternate dimension, a wormhole through time and a fresh perspective. 5. Creative Block artworks

Location: Eight foyer, the Tasting Room, Spier Hotel foyer Various media – 180 x 180mm

The Creative Block project gives opportunities to artists of outstanding talent. This is achieved by providing artists with blank blocks, to be transformed in any media they wish. The Creative Block invites artists, both established and emerging, to create work on a 18cm x 18cm blank block. The blocks are submitted for critique, and the best are purchased for resale to corporate patrons and the general public. Collectors then choose a number of blocks and hang them together, building an impactful, collective artwork that has the potential to be greater than the sum of its parts. Because of the synergy between this process and the art of blending wine, Spier named its blended wine range after the project – the award-winning Creative Block 2, 3 and 5 wines.
ART
SPIER’S TOP 10 ARTWORKS SPIER HAS A LONG HISTORY OF SUPPORTING AND SHOWCASING THE ARTS. 6. Wild Dogs I and Wild Dogs II by Liza Grobler in collaboration
6.
7.
with Qubeka Bead Studio
Location: Hotel foyer Beads on board, 1 150 x 1 950 mm Grobler blurs the traditions of craft and fine art, breathing new life into discarded, mass-produced materials through traditional craft techniques like crochet, beading and weaving. The Qubeka Bead Studio is self-sufficient, owned entirely by the bead artists themselves. Currently run by three dynamic artists and businesswomen – Neliswa Skiti, Mandisa Masina and Nolababalo Kanku – it collaborates with professional fine artists to produce signature works. 7. Ouroboros by Bronwyn Lace
8.
9. Untitled
Location: River Walk Rhinoceros skeleton, steel, steel cable Ouroboros is the ancient Egyptian symbol of the serpent eating its own tail. For her artwork, Lace used a donated skeleton of a rhinoceros killed some years ago during a lightning storm in the Cradle of Humankind, Gauteng. Through a process of dismantling the bones and reconfiguring them (using steel and steel cable), she has created a newly articulated skeleton – an artwork that embodies ancient symbolic meaning – eternity, infinity and rebirth which stands in stark contrast to what we are currently witnessing in relation to the rhinoceros, an animal soon to find itself on the extinction list. 8. Night of the Mongrels by David Koloane
Location: Manor House Oil on canvas Koloane often uses a dog as a metaphor in his work, as in the case of this work. The artist was born in Alexandra township, Johannesburg, and was instrumental in the founding of the Bag Factory, a collection of artists’ studios in Fordsburg.
by Kagiso Patrick Mautloa
Location: Hotel Bar/Lounge Mixed media on canvas Mautloa’s creative practice avoids a concise definition as he employs a wide range of media and styles. Born in Ventersdorp, he is essentially an urban artist, drawing his inspiration from the street culture, the dynamics of the changing city and the people he encounters there. He lives and works in Johannesburg. 10. The Mosaic Kraal by Various artists
9.
10.
Location: Near Wine Collection Point Mosaic The Spier Mosaic Kraal features the works of 16 contemporary South African artists including Selvin November, Lindile Magunya and Pierre Fouché. In close consultation with each artist, the images were interpreted as mosaic artworks by apprentices of the Spier Arts Academy (which offers employment-based training in professional mosaic and ceramic in Cape Town).

MOTHER’S DAY
EASTER
HOGHOUSE BEATS & BBQ
Lucky moms were treated to a decadent high tea at Spier Hotel in celebration of Mother’s Day. A glass of Spier Méthode Cap Classique on arrival was followed by a wide range of teas and coffees and a cake-stand crammed with sweet and savoury treats.
Easter was certainly a memorable one to those who visited Spier over the course of the long weekend. Eight hosted a farm-to-table feast on Good Friday and Sunday. Other diners were treated to a spit roast lunch in the Old Wine Cellar while the kids went hunting for Easter eggs on our Werf. In addition to its usual mouthwatering menu, the Hoghouse BBQ and Bakery served up Easter-inspired pastries hot from the oven throughout the weekend – including its legendary Hogcross Bun.
Hoghouse recently hosted an evening of good food and live music on its bakery terrace. Craft beer, Spier wine and G&Ts from the DIY Gin Bar accompanied Hoghouse’s delicious slow-roasted BBQ while patrons were entertained by BRYNN, a poetic folk band and alternative rock group. Spier at the Top 100 SA Wines 2017
Four Spier wines have been included in the seventh edition of the Top 100 SA Wines, which forms part of the 2017 National Wine Challenge. Leading the pack is the Woolworths Private Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2014, which was awarded Grand Cru National Champion Best in Class.

“The Woolworths Private Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 is crafted from a blend of Stellenbosch and Darling grapes. The former provides its restrained structure while the latter’s higher temperatures provide a luxurious richness,” Spier cellar master Frans Smit says. “This intoxicatingly complex combination makes this one of our most frequently awarded wines.” The other three wines to receive Top 100 – or double platinum – status were the Spier 21 Gables Cabernet Sauvignon 2014, the Spier Creative Block 3 2014 and the Woolworths Private Collection Chenin Blanc 2015.

REBUILDING

THE NEWSPAPER
Re-building the old grand dame of Stellenbosch In the early hours of Sunday morning, 28 May 2017 a fire broke out in the heart of the iconic and beloved Lanzerac Hotel in Stellenbosch’s Jonkershoek Valley. Although the Estate has been closed to the public since the incident, the Tasting Room reopened its doors on Monday, 12 June. The fire affected the following areas: the Hotel Reception, Governors Hall Restaurant, Craven Lounge, Taphuis Bar and all administrative staff offices. No harm was caused to guests or staff, and no damage was caused to the Manor House, guest rooms, wine cellar or vineyards and it has not affected the operations of its winery division. Reassuringly at this stage, the unofficial statement from the assessors has been that many of the walls of the affected area still hold integrity and can be used during the rebuild. This means that the façade of the his-
torical building will still hold true and many of the gables can be saved. “Our historical Estate claims a rich legacy and for this reason, we are devastated by the recent developments”, says Winston Cowie, Lanzerac’s CEO. “Lanzerac has come to represent so much to local Stellenbosch, so you have our utmost assurance to rebuild this iconic property with great care.” The Lanzerac team is positive that glory can be restored to the old grande dame of Stellenbosch and feel privileged to be a part of rebuilding the legacy of such a landmark property. “Furthermore, we are sincerely thankful to the local community for the overwhelming messages of support and care.” During the winter months, the Tasting Room will be open to the public, Monday to Sunday from 9am to 5pm, including public holidays. The Tasting Room offers visitors a warm Winter ambience with its lush interior and cozy fireplace.
Understanding The Wildfire Puzzle of Knysna & Plettenberg Bay The Knysna and Plettenberg Bay Fires of 2017 are a landmark incident in the history of wildfire in South Africa. If we don’t want to experience similar disasters in the future, we need this incident to be transformative with an outcome of real change and collaboration in the approach of how we view and manage wildfire risk reduction and how, collectively, we approach dealing with this risk. We live in a fire driven ecosystem where the occurrence of wildfire is inevitable. Wildfire suppression is only a small component of a much larger and more comprehensive strategy which is required to prevent disasters in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). Knysna and Plettenberg Bay are not dissimilar to many other existing communities in the urban and rural landscape that have the very real potential for a similar type of wildfire disaster to occur. The simple analogy of a puzzle can be used to explain the current approach to wildfires. Imagine a puzzle made up of 10 pieces which can only fit together when placed in a specific order from piece 1 to piece 10.
We Design & Develop Modern Websites
Our current approach to solving this puzzle is hampered with us having become solely focussed on pieces 10, 9 and 8. Because of our focus on these pieces, the final pieces from 1 to 7 seem to have been forgotten. Pieces 10, 9 and 8 very simplistically represent suppression services, limited fuel reduction strategies and limited wildfire planning - if we can just fit these three pieces together, we have it solved. In reality, like the puzzle, we are only 30% ready for wildfire and as a result there are major gaps and fundamentals in risk reduction missing. If you analyse fire suppression efforts and the budget spent on operations during the most destructive phase of the recent fires, and the resultant damage that occurred, it can be argued that these efforts were mostly unsuccessful. This is not from a lack of effort and dedication shown by fire services, but rather due to extreme fire behaviour and a rate of spread which rendered the fire uncontrollable. Where there is continuous dry vegetation, and the fire is fanned by a strong wind, it can reach an intensity and severity where suppression efforts are simply not possible. New role-players to be brought to the table must be the homeowners, who need to reduce the vulnerability of their homes to ignition. There needs to be a strategic plan put in place and implemented by Land Management Agencies, Fire Services, Local Government, Homeowners and the Insurance Industry. If this does not happen and we continue only to rely and primarily focus on suppression activities, and limited wildland fuel treatments, fire disasters will continue to occur.

A home’s characteristics in relation to its immediate surroundings principally determine home ignition potential during extreme wildfires. Only focusing on wildland vegetation management without consideration and mitigation of home ignition vulnerability is exposing homes to severe risk. Our primary strategy must be the creation of Fire Resilient Communities and the understanding of the wildfire. Prescribed fuel reduction burning and selectively allowing wildfires to burn when conditions are favourable would be such a strategy to keep fuel loads manageable, as well as reduce the continuity of fuels over large areas. An appropriate application of a wildfire risk management strategy needs to be holistic and consider the functional relationships between extreme-weather wildfires, landscape conditions, and home ignition/destruction. In response to recent wildfires in Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, the Western Cape Disaster Management Fire and Rescue Services have requested Vulcan Wildfire Management to conduct a strategic analysis of the incident.

Also an accomplished dancer, Yolande began skating at the age of seven years old and went on to achieve her Gold level test, Level 6 Skating Skills and Level 1 Coaching Test. Yolande joined Disney On Ice in 2009 and has performed in the USA, Canada and Asia. Konrad started ice skating at just four years old and held the title of SA National Junior Champion from 2000-2004 and then again in 2007. The woman taking charge in South Africa’s horse racing industry
PAGE 13
Vintage With Love
From jockeys to racehorse owners, the global horse racing industry is often regarded as a man’s world. It is therefore unsurprising that the list of South Africa’s top racehorse trainers is almost exclusively male. However, one name stands apart from the rest – Candice Robinson, a rose amongst the thorns, sitting in fourth place on the country’s trainer log. Since taking over as Head Trainer at Bass Racing Stables last year, Candice has been steaming ahead of the competition, having already achieved 72 wins from 682 starts. As the daughter of the legendary Thoroughbred trainer Mike Bass, Candice developed a passion for the animals at a young age. She claims that being able to enjoy horses is essential component of her job and when considering the amount of time spent in their company, one begins to understand why. Working with racehorses is a job that doesn’t stop, they need to be cared for and exercised seven days a week. This includes everything from horses coming up lame on the day of a big race to late night calls should a horse fall ill. Bass Racing Stables currently has 130 horses in Cape Town and Candice manages the large staff contingent, including 60 grooms, who are responsible for their training and care.
A love for fashion and a desire to make a difference is what inspired two Johannesburg-based women, Leigh Ord and Jacquie Myburgh Chemaly, to incorporate fashion and charity into one fabulous event. Five years ago, Vintage With Love (VWL) was born. “In the past few years we have seen the love of vintage fashion grow around the world, and today it is an essential ingredient to every stylish woman and man’s wardrobe. Those in the know are always on the hunt for unique fashion treasuresand VWL is part of this movement!” VWL is an NGO geared towards raising money for literacy charities through stylish sales of gently worn, quality fashion. Johannesburg has already seen two VWL sales and have raised close to R 2 million for literacy charities. Cape Town’s first sale in September 2015 raised just over R 600 000 and saw 2500 shoppers support this great initiative .
However, according to Candice, the most stressful aspect of her job is the responsibility of meeting her clients’ expectations. Racehorse owners put a huge amount of trust in their trainers, from selecting a great horse at auction to preparing it to be a champion on the racetrack.
The 2017 Cape Town VWL sale will be presented by the African Pride 15 on Orange Hotel, and takes place on the weekend of 1 - 3 September 2017. VWL is inviting all the VINTAGE LOVERS to be a part of this stylish project, which will raise funds and awareness for three brilliant literacy charities by donating gently worn clothing and joining in the shopping fun.
Thoroughbreds are usually purchased as yearlings (approximately 18 months of age) at auctions such as the National Yearling Sale held by Bloodstock South Africa, the sales arm of the Thoroughbred Breeders Association (TBA). The selection and purchase of a racehorse is often entrusted to a trainer and a horse with the right pedigree and physical attributes can command prices that reach into the millions. “When a client invests in a million-rand horse they expect great things,” explains Candice. “However, predicting whether a young Thoroughbred has the ability to be a champion is no simple task.” “It’s a bit like looking at a six-year-old child with gangly legs and saying that he’ll grow up to be a great athlete,” adds Mark Bass, Candice’s brother and the Marketing Manager at Bass Racing Stables. Despite this, Candice definitely has a knack for choosing winners and earlier this year a Thoroughbred trained by her won the Grade 1 Klawervlei Majorca Stakes run at the J&B Met – a sought-after feather for any trainer’s cap. This, only one year into her tenure at Bass Racing, proves that Candice is a lady who is doing big things in a man’s world. She joins a growing group of talented women who are challenging outdated industry prejudices including the likes of Michelle Payne who – after becoming the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup in its 155 year history – famously said, “Those who believe women aren’t strong enough to succeed can get stuffed, because we just beat the world.”
This year’s Cape Town sale will benefit the following charities: Partners with Possibility, Chic Mamas Do Care, and Shine Literacy. Do You Have Clothes To Donate? - If you would like to donate to the Vintage, with Love’ sale, please drop off your once loved fashion at the following places together with your name and contact details: Tea In The Park - Greenpoint, Tea Under, The Trees - Paarl, Mullers Optometrists, Desray Stores, Orms, Chic Mamas, Hoity Toity, and Piazza St John - Seapoint. Snoek Packs Quite A Protein To fish lovers, wintertime in the Cape equals freshly caught snoek. It is a good time to consider the nutritional value of eating this relatively low-cost medium-sized type of marine fish. According to a new study published in the South African Journal of Science, a snoek’s meat is quite high in protein and important omega-3 fatty acids, but low in fat. The findings from the study is part of ongoing research into the quality and value of snoek and other South African marine fish species. It was conducted by Ms Suné Henning, a lecturer in food science and technology at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), and meat scientist Prof Louw Hoffman. Only a handful of studies have been done on the nutritional contents of South African marine fish species, while even fewer older ones have specifically looked at raw and cooked Cape snoek. The current study established that Cape snoek is a low-fat fish that has a fat content of less than 4%. - in line with the fat contents of pink salmon fillets. Snoek is among others high in the “good” fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and the omega 3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The EPA content of the fat of raw snoek is 9,11%, and for the fat of cooked snoek it is 10,13%. The DHA content of the fat of raw snoek is 19,7%, and 20.28% for the fat of cooked snoek. In all it has a high protein content of 24,5%, which is higher than that of other marine fish species such as European hake and cod or freshwater fish species, such as rainbow trout and catfish. They further established that cooking reduces the amount of moisture available in the flesh, but increases the protein content. For the purposes of the current study, the research team focused on establishing the proximate analysis parameters of raw and cooked snoek. Proximate analysis is often used by food scientists to determine the major nutrients or components in a food source. They do so by assessing the moisture, ash, crude protein, crude fat and carbohydrate contents of a product – be it raw or processed. There are many methods by which snoek or any other piece of fish can be prepared – be it microwave cooking, steaming, “braaing” or oven baking. “It is therefore important to know what the specific proximate analysis parameters are of snoek, because these ultimately have an influence on the nutrient value of the fish that will be eaten,” says Henning, who is also studying the effect that different cooking techniques have on the proximate and fatty acid profiles of snoek. “The aim of this study was to determine the proximate and fatty acid compositions of raw and cooked Cape snoek. We wanted to quantify its nutritional value and make the information available to consumers and processors, so that it can be used as part of the nutritional tables of South African foodstuffs and in academic databases,” Prof Hoffman explains. The research team analysed the flesh samples of ten flecked Cape snoek at the laboratory of the Department of Animal Sciences at Stellenbosch University. As part of ongoing postgraduate research collaboration and support between CPUT and SU, Henning and Hoffman have combined their efforts over the past seven years to study aspects of snoek and other types of fish as a food source.
Kove Collection Group Head Chef Amber Deetlefs and her team have created a unique modern menu that emphasizes health and showcases fresh, locally sourced produce, without taking itself too seriously. Opt for garlicky ‘Gun Show Mussels’, ‘Biltong Carpaccio’ or ‘Caesar Salad Croquettes’ to start. Mains include the likes of ‘Epic Fish and Chips’ (battered fish with aioli and root veg chips); ‘Crispy Quack’ (crispy confit duck leg with peas, mint and potato puree) and ‘The Dirty Birdie’ (a Mexican spiced chicken breast on a brioche bun with Manchego cheese, coleslaw, house pickles and fries). The vegetarians can enjoy the vegan, gluten- and dairy-free ‘Everything but the Sink Coconut Curry’ or a ‘Buddha Bowl’, ‘Ditch the bread and it’s a salad’ gourmet, toasted sandwiches, and irresistible desserts also feature on the menu. Like the eclectic menu, decor combines crisp, contemporary styling - think clean lines, Scandi furniture, and natural textures - with playful accents, resulting in a warm and whimsical space that makes Lily’s the perfect spot to linger. Maties men Gear up for Berg challenge
A core group of five students from the University of Stellenbosch has committed to taking on their 2017 Berg River Canoe Marathon, many of them Berg novices, undaunted by the distance of the four day race or the consequences of the drought ravaging the region. Maties canoe club captain Evan Knight says the group has been putting in the hours on the Berg River dam, and will approach the 240km race to the West Coast town of Velddrif with different goals. “We are taking it as a challenge,” said Knight. “We all want to test ourselves and be pushed to the limit. Individually the guys have set their goals, but as a group the challenge is to finish the Berg.” Knight joins Alan Houston, Brandon Macleod, Mike Jamieson and Carlise Hartman in Maties colours for the race.

USING SPORT TO SAVE THE PLANET The annual Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, which takes place 14 -17 September is more than just a race. As Africa’s must-run iconic city marathon and a certified carbon-neutral event, it encourages all participants to get involved in its Run4Change legacy programme by taking the pledge to ‘RunGreen’. By taking up the RunGreen pledge, participants have the opportunity to play an active role in environmental initiatives. The RunGreen campaign encourages runners not to litter, to respect the environment by running for nature, to measure and offset their carbon footprint, and to support broader carbon-neutral projects.
Houston has a fourth in the FNB Dusi to his credit, racing with his older brother Andrew in a K2 race, and also started last year’s Berg before going “missing in action”. Knight tipped Houston to front the Maties challenge, but added that the group would work together wherever possible. “We are all KZN guys, with plenty of Dusis and Draks behind us, so the Berg is a totally new challenge. The lack of water in the river makes it harder because we can’t go tripping, so the race will be a bit of an unknown for most of us,” he said. Knight said that the unique make-up of the Maties club, which also includes older paddlers, will help the students.“We have a great vibe at the club, and the older guys really help out and encourage us. They have so much experience, and guys like Daantjie Malan and Anthony Penderis really contribute a lot to the club. The Berg River Canoe marathon starts in Paarl on 12 July, and ends at Velddrif on 15 July. For more information visit www.berg.org.za
Entries now open for Blisters for Bread 2017
The Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) is pleased to announce that entries are now open for its 49th popular annual fundraising event, the Blisters for Bread Charity Family Fun Walk in association with Lucky Star. The event will be taking place at the Green Point Cricket Club on Sunday, 27 August 2017 and will include two routes along the Sea Point Promenade, a 10km walk that starts at 07h30 and a 5km walk that starts at 08h00. Due to popular demand, X Factor winners FOUR will once again be entertaining the walkers as they cross the finish-line at the Green Point Cricket Stadium. Other entertainment includes a high energy performance by a top South African pop singer, Lakota Silva. This year PSFA aims to emphasise four areas in which food enables children to reach their true potential. The awareness campaign is based on four key pillars that represent four core reasons to provide children with nutritious meals namely; food for thought (food enables young learners to think critically), food for cr8tivity (healthy meals enable the mind to be creative), food for play (balanced meals allow learners the energy to perform in sports and general play), and food for all (together we can make sure that all of our youth have access to healthy food).
RunGreen is part of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon’s Run4Change legacy programme, which aims to make a significant and positive impact on society through a dedicated focus on five key pillars: health and wellness; fundraising and charities; peace and sport; sustainable events; and the development and empowerment of South African athletes. With assistance from the Climate Neutral Group, a recognised provider of carbon management and offsetting services, the marathon strives to facilitate a positive environmental impact in South Africa. To this end, it supports the Greenpop Urban Greening and Reforestation programme, the Wonderbag Project, the Joburg Waste to Energy programme, and the Basa Magogo Project. Participants can support this cause via the recognised charities, at all activations or at the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon Expo at the charity and partner stands. With participants from over 60 countries winging their way to South Africa for the event, supporting GreenPop, which plants trees across South Africa, Zambia and Tanzania, is the perfect way to offset their carbon footprint. Since its establishment in 2010, GreenPop has planted over 79 000 indigenous and fruit trees, providing daily benefits to 350 000 people. This marathon has also established ‘chuck zones’ along the route for the disposal of litter and to prevent runners from throwing empty water sachets on the street. Runners are encouraged to carry their own water where possible, in a hydration pack or water-bottle belt. The races on the cards for this year’s action-packed road running spectacle include the 12km and 22km Sanlam Cape Town Peace Trail Runs, the Sanlam Cape Town 10km Peace Run, the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon 42.2km race, and the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon Peace Fun Run.
