New York City & Cape Town Sign Cooperative Agreement To Boost Travel Between The Two Destinations NYC & Company, the City’s official destination marketing organization, joined Cape Town Tourism to sign a first-ever cityto-city partnership to boost tourism between Cape Town and New York City. This is the first agreement of its kind NYC & Company has signed with a destination marketing organization on the African continent.

NYC & Company President and CEO Fred Dixon and Cape Town Tourism’s CEO Enver Duminy were on hand to sign the tourism partnership agreement in New York City. The two-year alliance includes a collaboration agreement between the two destination marketing organizations, the sharing of best practices in tourism marketing and the exchange of marketing assets to boost reciprocal travel.

When three great white sharks mysteriously washed ashore along the coast in Gansbaai, researchers weren’t sure what to think. But after doing necropsies (animal autopsies) on all three sharks, the researchers identified a possible culprit.

All of the sharks were missing their livers, and one was missing its heart. It’s likely that an orca, also known as a killer whale, attacked the sharks and ate their organs.

The great white shark is one of the ocean’s most powerful predators, yet it is sometimes prey for orcas that killed several of the formidable creatures off South Africa’s coast this month.

The rare necropsies conducted on the three carcasses that washed ashore show how orcas dominate the marine food

chain at the expense of great white sharks, whose ferocious reputation (thanks partly to the 1975 movie “Jaws”) belies their vulnerability to shark nets, fishing, poaching, pollution— and the biggest member of the dolphin family.

Orcas, which also face human threats, have a softer image (the 1993 film “Free Willy” helped) due to their intelligence and accessibility at water parks.

Ingrid Visser, who has studied killer whales for nearly 20 years, said orcas used their powerful tails to create strong underwater currents that forced the sharks to the surface, then stunned them.

Cape Water Crisis - Health Clubs Turn Off The Steam In response to the serious water crisis in the Western Cape, Virgin Active health clubs in the region have closed their saunas and steam rooms and have stopped the filling of swimming pools. The latter action may mean the closure of pools when the level is no longer safe for swimming.

Wesley Noble, Head of Changing Business for Good at Virgin Active, says these measures come on top of a range of actions which the clubs have already taken including shutting off high pressure sensation showers, educating members and cutting water usage in every area of the business.

As part of the agreement, New York City and Cape Town will share best practices in tourism management to increase the number of visitors between both markets in the years ahead. The two organizations will also collaborate on ways to boost travel between Cape Town and New York City through offers and incentives provided by third-party travel providers.

Noble says the company has been implementing a programme of water conservation across all of its clubs for several years, and consumption is down 11% nationally on a year-on-year basis, but the situation in the Cape “has really focussed our minds and we calculate we’ve saved as much as 10.5 million litres in the region which is the equivalent of 7 extra glasses of drinking water for every resident in the Western Cape.”

Open Streets - Going Car Free On 1 October 2017 Open Streets Main Road builds on a local programme inspired by Colombia’s Ciclovía that the City of Cape Town has supported since inception.

Open Streets Days have taken place in Langa, Observatory, Mitchells Plain, Bellville and the CBD. Until now, however, the route has been no longer than 2km.

“On 1 October, we will be taking a major step in expanding the programme. In Colombia, hundreds of kilometres of streets go car free every Sunday and public holiday. This is, of course, something we’d eventually like to see in Cape Town: an Open Streets route that brings communities together across many different parts of the city,” says Marcela.

Part of one of Cape Town’s most historic and important thoroughfares is going car free during the first Sunday of Transport Month. On 1 October, Cape Town CBD, Woodstock, Salt River and Observatory will become a platform for Open Streets, reserving a section of the M4 for people, not cars.

The 5km stretch will encompass one of the city’s biggest road closures outside of a major sporting or cultural event such as the Cape Town Marathon, Cape Town Cycle Tour or Cape Town Carnival. Closed to motorised vehicles, it will become an open space for pedestrians, cyclists, skateboarders, wheelchair users and other non-motorised transport users to move in safety.

“The route features many well-known landmarks and permanent public spaces, opening up a world of possibilities for exploring, socialising, exercising and shopping,” says Marcela Guerrero Casas, managing director and co-founder of the non-profit organisation Open Streets Cape Town (OSCT).

Connecting the southern suburbs between Cape Town and Simon’s Town, the M4 is an integral part of the lives of many Capetonians. It starts as Darling Street in the CBD and becomes Sir Lowry Road and then Victoria Road in Woodstock, before continuing as Main Road from Salt River to Simon’s Town station.

From there it changes names three more times, before continuing as Main Road to its end near Smitswinkel Bay. Most Capetonians know it simply as “the main road”.

For most of its length, the main road runs parallel with Metrorail’s southern line and many of its surrounding communities are walkable. However, much of the road is dangerous and congested, especially during morning and afternoon peak.

Between 2013 and 2017, OSCT hosted 12 Open Streets Days in five parts of Cape Town, attracting between 3 000 and 15 000 participants at each one. While colourful activities have brought these days to life, Open Streets can be a chance for mobility and experiencing the city in a different way.

Drought Crisis - More Water Restriction Devices Coming!

The City of Cape Town is preparing for its next installations of water management devices at properties with excessively high water usage across the metro. There are excessive water users in all suburbs of Cape Town. The City further reminds all consumers to adjust the water-isolating valves (stopcocks) on their properties to reduce the flow rate and save water.

Dam storage levels are at 32,5%, which means usable water is at 22,5%. Collective consumption is 629 million litres per day, which is 129 million above the target of 500 million litres per day needed to build reserves for the expected harsh summer ahead.

The intricate process of restricting water supply to excessive use properties is ongoing and excessive users in the areas of Durbanville, Southfield, Retreat, Oakdale, Rondebosch, Maitland, Crawford, Three Anchor Bay and Parklands will be visited over the coming weeks for the installation of water management devices.

“The water management devices, specifically for excessive users, are the latest in a myriad drought interventions, together with large-scale pressure reduction and enormous enforcement efforts. The City’s emergency supply scheme interventions are also under way.”

“We are hoping that significant further reductions in water usage could be achieved if residents reduce water flow through adjusting their private stopcocks or water control tap. It is really important that all possible avenues are explored,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Informal Settlements, Water and Waste Services; and Energy, Councillor Xanthea Limberg. The City also reminds households that it is the property owner’s duty to detect and repair water leaks.

How to adjust a stopcock to reduce water flow (this should ideally be done during the day): Close the stopcock by turning it in a clockwise direction, and open it again (about a half turn). Go to the tap furthest away from the stopcock (this could be inside the house, in the back garden/yard or in an upstairs bathroom). Open the cold water tap and see if there is sufficient water flowing. If required, adjust the stopcock a half turn at a time until a reasonable but reduced flow rate of water to the furthest cold water tap is achieved.

Warmwaterberg Spa and Mineral Hot Spring dates back to the early 19th century – with its setting in a farming community situated between Barrydale and Ladismith on Route 62 from Montagu to Oudtshoorn. The history of the farm Warmwaterberg and the hot spring, which is situated on 600ha of land, is closely interwoven with the history of the Le Grange family who today, five generations and 119 years later, still remain in control of the property.

All baths in the units are supplied with spring water at 43.5°Celsius. Three styles of Timber Chalets are available: one, two or three-bedroom units, each with its own kitchenette, shower and outdoor braai facility. Furthermore, the 20 Campsites are serviced with power and a braai-facilities, while the ablution block offers natural hot water and contains two walk-in roman baths.

Other Services Another typical example of Karoo vernacular is the Old School built in 1914 for the children of the area. This building has been kept in the same state it was built, and today caters for a group of 30 people.

Artesian Spring The Artesian Spring is the main attraction at Warmwaterberg Spa. This spring is believed to be 4-6 km deep with a temperature at the source of 43.5° Celsius. The source of the water is almost a thousand years old and saturated with iron and manganese, but without any traces of Sulphur, which makes it unique. The water is untreated, has a high Iron content and therefore, extremely healthy and sweettasting. The water also contains traces of Lithium which has a soothing and calming impact on the human body. Regular visitors to Warmwaterberg Spa believe they have experienced healing from arthritis and various other ailments.

The original cement dam was reconstructed as a Lapa and serves as a focal point to the Restaurant and Bar, and Kiosk, and is ideal for weddings and social gatherings, providing seating for as many as 130 guests.

In addition to the two hot swimming pools, there is a cold pool and a number of roman baths on the property. The water is untreated and comes out of the earth as it is, and is piped to the pools without any additives. The cold pool is favourably received in the summer months.

Accommodation Warmwaterberg Spa offers only Selfcatering accommodation. The 1890’s mud and stone buildings (“badhuisies” or “Bath Houses”) were originally constructed as bathrooms for travellers. The Main House constructed in 1907 became the Historic Sanatorium.

Wooden Timber Chalets were later built, and camping sites made available to facilitate the demand.

Warmwaterberg Spa also facilitates a full-service licensed Restaurant and Bar, open every day of the year (excluding New Year’s Day), an off-sales as well as a small kiosk offering basic necessities to guests. The Restaurant specializes in traditional à la carte “Boerekos” with favourites such as Lamb pie, Karoo chops, and Bobotie.

The Bath Houses have been retained as close as possible to its original 1886 mud and stone design. The three-roomed building consist of two bedrooms, fully equipped kitchen with a fireplace, private toilet and outdoor “braai-facility.” The main bedroom has a double bed and private bath, while the second bedroom has two single beds and private bath.

Nature Barren and desolate as the area may seem to be the Succulent Plant Kingdom, unrivalled in specie numbers, diversity and beauty gives meaning to the peaceful and tranquil environment of Warmwaterberg Spa. The Spa provides its own spectacular 6km walking trail on the edge of the mountain taking you behind the spring eye where over 2000 different endemic species can be identified, and where the Springbok, Duiker and Steenbok ponder.

The Hiking Trail also has its season of extra ordinary beauty which could be viewed shortly after good rains and in Spring. The long Hiking Trail is probably the finest publicly available walk through the succulent Karoo.

Stellenbosch Ranks Third In Africa For Biotech FDI Based on the research conducted during 2016 by Wesgro, Stellenbosch was the most requested wine route by international visitors. Stellenbosch was the only municipality to receive a FDI investment in a research & development project in South Africa.

The GDP of the greater Cape Winelands, which includes Stellenbosch, grew from R33.3 billion in 2006 to R43.2 billion in 2015. The largest sectors are finance, real estate and business services, contributing R10 billion in 2015.

According to the QS World Rankings, Stellenbosch is home to the recently ranked second best university on the African continent, Stellenbosch University, contributing towards innovation and business development in the region.

Wesgro CEO Tim Harris, Mayor of Stellenbosch Gesie van Deventer and Minister of Economic Opportunities Alan Winde hosted an engagement with stakeholders from across the Cape Winelands region to discuss opportunities for investment in Stellenbosch.

“Stellenbosch ranks third among all African cities in FDI Intelligence’s study of global biotech locations and in fact has the highest level of biotech FDI as a percentage of total FDI at 12.5%. This is largely thanks to the $42.6 million investment

by Enza Zaden, which created Westcape Biotech Pty through a joint venture with Expressive Research, a biotechnological company that is active in the fields of cell and tissue culture and molecular diagnostics. This project demonstrates the potential that Stellenbosch has for biotechnology activity and has helped place it on the African biotech map,” said FDI Magazine Editor-in-Chief Courtney Fingar.

This engagement follows a panel discussion held in Cape Town in June 2017 on the province’s plan to maintain investor confidence in the regional economy following the recent spate of South African credit ratings downgrades.

Towns across the Western Cape have an important role to play in facilitating investment, growing the provincial economy and helping create jobs. Stellenbosch is a growing economic hub and a region ripe with reasons for investment, particularly in the technology industry: Stellenbosch ranks third among all African cities in FDI Intelligence’s study of global biotech locations. The process of producing craft beer is much more than ingredients such as malt and hops being added together and fermented to result in a mature beer taste. It requires a dedicated and passionate brewmaster, key ingredients and components which forms part of the chemical processes involved in producing a perfect craft beer.

A brewer is able to create a unique beer by producing small quantities which delivers strong flavours. The ingredients used by microbrewers are different to those used by large, commercial brewers. DELIVER HOPE & INSPIRATION TO SA YOUTH It was an unforgettable day at Salesian Life Choices when two of South Africa’s brightest stars visited the NPO’s office in Cape Town on Monday, 14 August. The excitement was feverish before actress Charlize Theron and comedian Trevor Noah arrived accompanied by a group of visitors.

Charlize has been a funder of Salesian Life Choices for a number of years through her Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP) and she was full of praise for the work that Life Choices do with youth from the Cape Flats.

The visit started in the newly renovated office in Landsdowne where they were introduced to the team and some students attending a coding course, moved on to Oaklands High School for a entertaining “Straight Talks” session with Grade 9 learners, as well as a visit to a mobile clinic in Langa.

The visitors were introduced to the different initiatives of the youth organisation that reach more than 9 000 young people every year with a holistic approach to promote healthy living; to assist parents and families; to encourage excellence through leadership and to empower young entrepreneurs to create jobs. Salesian Life Choices director Sofia Neves explained her organisation’s belief in choices, not charity. “We believe that once off interventions are not enough to transform a young person’s life. We partner with vulnerable youth in the Cape Flats on a journey of growth and development, delivering lasting change in the lives we touch.”

From October 2017 the Winelands will welcome a surgeon with a special interest and passion for breast cancer in the area – right in time for breast cancer awareness month.

Dr. Liana Roodt is a specialist general surgeon with a passion for cutting-edge breast care and surgery, including breast conserving cancer surgery. Evidencebased medicine and rigorous surgical discipline form the foundation of Liana’s practice, but what differentiates her is her drive to provide truly integrated and holistic patient care.

She believes in offering not just surgery, but access to a complete package of breast and personal health care services.

Liana’s firm belief in these principles culminated in Project Flamingo, a successful non-profit company which she created in 2010 to help address the long and distressing treatment waiting time faced by breast cancer patients in the public health care sector.

Liana obtained her MBChB from the University of Pretoria in 2006. She completed her internship at Groote Schuur Hospital and community service in Barberton, Mpumalanga. After she returned to Cape Town, she worked at GF Jooste Hospital as a surgical medical officer, while also completing a post-graduate certificate in Integrative Medicine at the University of Stellenbosch. Liana joined the Groote Schuur Department of Surgery in 2012 where she obtained her FCS (SA) and MMed (Surgery) Cum Laude from the University of Cape Town.

For the past two years, Liana has been working as a consultant surgeon in the Surgical Breast and Endocrine and Trauma Surgery Units at Groote Schuur Hospital, and will remain affiliated to them while building her private practice in the Winelands from Advanced Vergelegen and continuing her non-profit work with Project Flamingo.

During a question and answer session a group of Leaders’ Quest participants were given the opportunity to get to know Charlize, Trevor and their guests. Charlize gave learners career advice before she turned to more serious topics.

South Africans are a resilient people, she said. “As soon as I moved to America, I realised an advantage I had. I have a thick skin and I can bounce back.” She learnt that not having equal opportunities don’t have to limit your success. Charlize said she felt proud to be able to invest in South African youth and acknowledged the struggles of young people growing up surrounded by poverty and violence. “Your lives aren’t easy. Our circumstances may differ, but as South Africans, we know where the struggle is. My own struggle made me aware of the struggles we all face.

Own your own truth. I used that in a way to drive myself, to push myself. That was my engine.”

Trevor added to Charlize’s powerful message when responding to a question about his confidence on stage. “I genuinely don’t have the confidence you think I have. What I do have is confidence in my work ethic. When I get onto the stage I’m terrified and all I can do is rely on the work I’ve put into myself before I got onto the stage. That is when work pays off.”

His message to South African youth was to work as hard as they can. “You may not be the best at a thing or the most talented, but what you can do is work the hardest.”

She has recently been named one of ten “Inspirational Women to know in South Africa” (www.theculturetrip.com) for her work as founder and director of Project Flamingo and are excited about this new chapter.

“Take what you have, find the value in it, encourage other South Africans to see the value in it as well. If we keep on doing that, we can create in a microcosm of something amazing that can change the world.”

Before Charlize and her guests left, she said what she loves about Salesian Life Choices is that young people have a space to talk about things and be themselves.

“Take advantage of what you have here. Trevor and I have been saying to each other ‘I wish I had this when we were in school.’”

What is the difference between a day hospital and a larger hospital?

According to recent statistics, only 10 – 14% of day cases are performed at a day hospital and the rest is conducted at a larger hospital, indicating the growth potential for day hospitals.”

A specialist attending to his overnight patients and performing major surgeries at a larger hospital in the area, is also able to undertake procedures at a day hospital.

The Wolftrap Steakhouse Champion of 2017 is Crowned

Rare Grill in Kenilworth took top honours in the Wolftrap Steakhouse Championships 2017 with over 150 steakhouses competing to become South Africa’s Steakhouse Champion.

In the first round during May, the public seeded the field by voting, via Facebook, for their favourite steakhouse. The Top Ten Finalists, as voted by the public, were then visited unannounced during June by expert judges led by Pete Goffe-Wood, well-known MasterChef personality, and assessed according to a strict score sheet that focussed on the steak on the plate, as well as looking at the side dishes and the quality of the hospitality.

Ultimately it was debut entrant Rare Grill in Kenilworth that claimed top honours.

This marks the first Cape winner in the five years of The Wolftrap Steakhouse Championships.

Rare Grill owner Greg Bax was overwhelmed to claim the Championship title, as well as Newcomer of the Year, a new award this year.

“For an intimate steakhouse like Rare Grill, such an accolade is really going to put us on the map!” Bax said. Pete Goffe-Wood, head judge, added: “Rare Grill is a gem, an owner-operated steakhouse where Greg personally mans the grill and takes immense pride in the quality of his beef.”

The other two new awards this year were Steakhouse Legend of the Year which was awarded to The Godfather in Centurion, a stalwart in the industry, and Steakhouse Chain of the Year which went to the Cattle Baron Group for having four outlets in the top 30: Cattle Baron Tyger Waterfront, Cattle Baron George, Cattle Baron Tableview and Cattle Baron Mossel Bay. The Wolftrap Steakhouse Championships is a blend of public involvement and expert arbitration - and the ultimate winner is therefore not only very good indeed, but also a public favourite. Highest International Recognition For South Africa’s World Class Brandies

Fine potstill brandies from the House of Van Ryn’s and Oude Meester dominated the podium at the 2017 International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) in London, collecting Gold Outstanding awards for the Oude Meester Souverein 18 Year Old and the Van Ryn’s 20 Year Old Collector’s Reserve.

Founded in 1969, the IWSC is considered to be the most prestigious competition of its kind in the world, and awards given by the competition are among some of the highest honours in the industry. Judging for the Competition is unique in that it has two stages; first, the products are tasted blind by expert panels, selected from over 300 fully experienced and qualified industry judges. Products which receive the top medals are then subject to technical analysis before results are released; this crucial stage ensures that the medal winners receive complete validation, and can make a rightful claim to be among the world’s best.

The judges were impressed by Van Ryn’s 20 Year old, waxing lyrical in describing a hint of cinnamon and fresh baked buns on the nose, leading to a palate carrying hints of leather, spiced cream and a suggestion of ginger. The Oude Meester Souverein proved equally popular with the judges, who found a rich veins of vanilla and oak on the nose, followed by notes of spiced cooking apple with ice cream. The palate entices with hints of red apples, stone fruit and nutmeg before leading to an elegant finish enhanced by subtle notes of sweet grape and leathery oak.

100th Darling Wildflower celebrates the Cape Fynbos Kingdom The Darling Wildflower Society has been around for more than a century and the Society’s Show takes place annually from 14-17 September 2017. It celebrates an integral part of the Cape Fynbos Kingdom comprised of Renosterveld, Rietveld, Sandveld, and Strandveld where more than 1200 different species of flowers can be found. This year’s show will be the 100th event, the Centenary Show! The display will focus on the Wildflower Society’s development through the past 100 years as well as the Herbarium project.

The Flower Show will offer a variety of activities to entertain young and old including the Landscaped Hall depicting the flowers of the area in their natural habitat, an orchid display, a free ride on a tractor-drawn wagon, Craft & Gourmet Food Market, a Veteran Tractor/Car Display, and an Entertainment Tent.

Visitors can also look forward to a range of workshops. Khwa ttu will be doing kids’ and family workshops about fynbos and its links to traditional San culture and their heritage. “We’ve been going for three years and the Cape Town Fringe has made its mark on the City’s arts calendar. Thousands of performers and tens of thousands of audience members have enjoyed what the Fringe has offered. However, across the City, there are venues, theatres, performers, and communities who are battling to find their way into the ‘mainstream’ and, often against enormous odds, are still managing to bring stages to life with great art. So this year we want to work with new theatre makers and spaces to amplify their platforms and the work they are putting on them.”

Productions in all genres of performance are eligible for consideration. Preference will be given to smaller and medium-sized works that are able to tour to venues on the planned Cape Town Fringe circuit. Work should be bold, compelling unconventional, socially aware and relevant. Successful productions will be programmed into venues selected for participation and the Cape Town Fringe team will also work with successful venues to programme from their own networks and/or from the open call for expressions of interest.

Guinness PRO14 - Summer rugby comes to South Africa The Southern Kings and Toyota Cheetahs will play a season of 21 league matches in the competition, with the aim of finishing in the top six to earn a place in the finals series.

The playing format is: Each conference contains seven teams with an equal split of teams from each union; Every team will play every other team at least once; Italian, Scottish and South African teams will play an additional derby fixture to even out the schedule (e.g. the Toyota Cheetahs will play the Southern Kings three times); The Guinness PRO14 Final Series will include quarter-finals allowing the top six clubs to reach the knock-out stages (teams 1-3 from each Conference); The top three clubs from each conference (excluding SA teams) will qualify for the Champions Cup, while the team with the highest points total outside of those six teams across both conferences will claim the final Champions Cup. Harold Verster CEO of the Toyota Cheetahs said: “There will be a steep learning curve for our coaches and players but we’re in it to win it.”

The Toyota Cheetahs and Southern Kings will kick off a new adventure for South African rugby in a few weeks’ time when they become the newest members of the new-look Guinness PRO14 competition. The tournament featuring the leading clubs of Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Italy has been expanded to incorporate two South African teams in a ground-breaking move into cross-hemisphere rugby.

The two South African franchises which voluntarily withdrew from Vodacom Super Rugby participation in July will play a schedule of 21 matches from September to the final on 26 May 2018.

Jurie Roux, CEO of SA Rugby, said the decision to accept an invitation to play in the northern hemisphere competition was a ground-breaking move that added a whole new dimension to the South African season. “This development is as significant as the launch of Vodacom Super Rugby itself back in 1996,” said Roux.

“We’re very grateful to Guinness PRO12 for opening the door to entry to one of the world’s top competitions, featuring some of the game’s leading club teams. We believe the Toyota Cheetahs’ and Southern Kings’ participation will be good for the competition and good for the teams.”

Martin Anayi, CEO of the Guinness PRO14, welcomed both clubs to the Championship and described it as an historic chapter for the tournament and also for the game of rugby union. “The arrival of the Toyota Cheetahs and the Southern Kings marks a bold and exciting new chapter for the Guinness PRO14 in its goal to become a world class, global rugby Championship,” Anayi said. “These are established clubs who already operate to the high standards demanded by Super Rugby and they will add to the quality of our tournament.

Andre Rademan, president of the Eastern Province Rugby Union, said: “The Kings have been through tough times on and off the field over recent years, but we now have the chance to reclaim our status as one of the powerhouses of South African rugby.”

The races for this year’s action-packed road-running spectacle include the 12km and 22km Sanlam Cape Town Peace Trail Runs, the Sanlam Cape Town 10km Peace Run, the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon 42.2km race, and the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon Peace Fun Run. Dr Jann Killops, representing Mediclinic and Er24, says that there are many benefits to incorporating exercise in your daily routine, including weight loss, strengthening of bones and muscles, and lowering your risk for cardiovascular disease. “Running stimulates key enzymes that remove fatty acids from the blood and limit the further formation of fatty acids, which in turn lowers your cholesterol and risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes,” she explains.

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, which acquired Gold Label Status from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) this year, has comprehensive training programmes available on its website, put together by leading coaches with international experience.

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon aims to encourage people to adopt an active and healthy lifestyle as part of their daily lives. “You’ll soon discover a different version of yourself as you get fitter. You’ll start feeling energised from running, and as you manage to cover longer distances, your confidence will improve,” says Van Zyl-Meyer.

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, now in its fourth year, also encourages all participants to take the pledge to say no to doping. This initiative is supported by the South African Institute for Drug-free Sport (SAIDS) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). “Living a healthier lifestyle means that educating yourself on what medications are allowed when competing is another aspect to consider,” says Welham.

“The reward is not only the medal or sense of achievement when you cross the finish line to complete the marathon, but also in the journey itself,” says van Zyl Meyer.

Spier’s 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2016 has been recognised as one of South Africa’s best Chenin Blanc’s through its inclusion in the annual Standard Bank Chenin Blanc Top 10 Challenge. It continues a winning streak at Spier for the varietal: in previous years, the same competition has included the 2014 and 2015 vintages, while in 2014 it included the Woolworths Spier Private Collection 2013.

The 21 Gables Chenin Blanc is a wine of outstanding pedigree. The 2015 vintage received Best in Class Chenin Blanc at The Alberta Beverage Awards among other prizes, while 2014’s medal haul included double platinum at the Top 100 SA Wines.

This consistent acclaim is testament to the passion, dedication and experience of Cellar Master Frans Smit, a member of the prestigious Cape Winemakers Guild who has worked at Spier since 1995.

A stipulation of the Top 10 Challenge that the prize money must be used to reinforce the economic and social benefits in the workplace. Spier will be donating its R25,000 prize money to community initiatives in Wellington, near the Nooitgedacht farm. These initiatives will be focused on education-based funding to support the development of farm worker children. The rich and complex 2016 vintage has been crafted with grapes handpicked from 43-yearold vines which produce grapes with thicker skins from a single vineyard in the Tygerberg region.

Matured for 14 months in French oak, the result is a Chenin Blanc with superb flavour intensity and excellent ageing potential. The Chenin has soft aromas of dried apricots and ripe tropical fruit, with an oak and vanilla undertow. On the palate, there is good acidity and rounded rich flavours of white flesh peaches, almond paste and hints of cream. Smit recommends enjoying it with oriental-style crisp pork belly or Cape-style pickled fish.
