Major N1 Upgrade Project Is Progressing Well

A R487 million Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) project to upgrade 9 km of the N1 between Plattekloof Road and Old Oak Interchange is 38% complete. Approximately 120 000 vehicles travel along this stretch of road during the morning inbound and afternoon outbound peaks.

The addition of a third lane in both directions will significantly reduce traffic congestion on one of Cape Town’s busiest roads. This project is expected to have been completed in April 2019.

Work on installing the Freeway Management System (FMS) is complete. The first phase of median widening and barrier installation will be completed next month.

Once this work has been completed, the widening of the road will commence.

Enderli’s says he is driven by his passion for life, his family and a desire to help others: “I believe in unleashing the mind’s full potential, constantly pushing boundaries to achieve dreams and helping make a difference by giving back.”

He singles out Greg Gray of Romance Films, Ricky Boyd of Deliverance Post Productions, and Marc Algranti of Pulse Music, as “putting in above and beyond on this project,” but says others donated props, lighting, vehicles, boats, casting services, specialized equipment and catering, among a multitude of things, as well as doing many hours of hard work. In a first for the Currie Cup, fans at the DHL Western Province and Cell C Sharks match at Newlands was captured on FANCAM and were able to tag themselves in a high-resolution picture on social media.

He has already completed the 34km English Channel and the 12.5km Strait of Gibraltar and through donations is raising funds for the National Sea Rescue Institute’s water safety programme to help prevent drownings. Enderli’s next swim is a hazardous 32km channel between Catalina Island and Long Beach, California, in October, 2017.

“It was my toughest day on this planet and the longest night of my life,” said property consultant, Enderli who set off from Molokai Island across the 700m deep channel to Oáhu Island.

“I encountered dolphins, saw two sharks which fortunately kept their distance and was stung consistently by jellyfish on my entire body, including my nose and face. It was the most painful thing I have ever experienced.”

The 20hr35min swim was the third in Enderli’s quest to become the first South African to complete seven of the world’s most brutal open water swims known as “Oceans Seven”, the marathon swimming equivalent of the Seven Summits mountaineering challenge.

The ‘Zeitz Mocaa Effect’ Will Provide Big Boost To Cape Economy The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa was officially launched during the Heritage weekend, 22-25 September 2017 in Cape Town.

The Zeitz MOCAA, a partnership between the V&A Waterfront and Jochen Zeitz, designed by Thomas Hetherwick, is the first major museum in Africa dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora. The museum hosted a four-day public grand opening where no entrance fees was charged.

This eagerly anticipated new Cape attraction promises to solidify Cape Town’s position as the continent’s design capital and have a profound effect on the local tourism and knowledge economy. The Zeitz MOCAA will also attract potential investors and buyers from across the world who will contribute to economic growth and job creation. The evidence for this multiplier impact can be seen elsewhere around the world, and the now famous ‘Bilbao Effect’ demonstrates exactly how this can happen.

The Gugenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, completely changed the face of a city that was battling with a sluggish economy. The museum acted as a centerpiece for regeneration, inspiring innovation that led to growth and job creation. Visitor spending in Bilbao jumped after the museum opened, and five years after construction, Bilbao estimated that its economic impact on the local economy was worth €168 million, pouring an additional €27 million into the regional government tax coffers – the equivalent of adding 4 415 jobs. More than one million people annually now visit the museum, which became the centre of the Bilbao Art District.

Mayor De Lille Conducts Final Site Inspection of CTICC East Expansion On 6 September 2017, City of Cape Town Executive Mayor, Patricia de Lille, declared the expansion of the Cape Town International Convention Centre, CTICC 2, ‘ready to welcome the world’.

The Mayor conducted a final site inspection of the expansion with CTICC Chief Executive Officer, Julie-May Ellingson, to give her final seal of approval of the construction of the expansion before contractors hand over the building for occupation.

The City of Cape Town contributed R550 million towards the expansion costs.

‘In July 2014, I broke the first ground at the construction site. Now, in September 2017, we are standing in the impressive, light-filled reception hall of CTICC 2,” said Mayor De Lille.

CTICC 2 is an elegant and modern expansion of the original building, now to be known as CTICC 1. The 31 148 m2 expansion adds 10 000 m2 of multipurpose conference and exhibition space through six halls located across two floors.

The facility also include 3 000 m2 of informal and formal meeting space in the form of four larger meeting suites, a terrace room, and five smaller meeting pod rooms.

Two modern rooftop decks provide the ideal backdrop for post-meeting cocktails.

Unlike its original counterpart, the new centre is built across six floors and has more exterior balconies. CTICC 2 will also be able to operate as an independent facility. Its design received a 4-star Green Star rating by the Green Building Council of South Africa.

The centre hosted its first event, the 21st annual Congress of the Council of Shopping Centres, from 13-15 September 2017. The third International Conference on Global Food Security will seek solutions to feed the earth’s nine billion people. The event takes place in CTICC 2 from 3 - 6 December 2017.

In 2020, the World Ophthalmology Congress promises to attract 15 000 delegates and is the largest event the centre has secured in its 14-year history. The City would not have been able to win the bid for this event without an expanded convention centre.

The Mayor’s inspection included a tour of the impressive main conference and exhibition halls, meeting pod rooms, and the facility’s extensive back-of-house areas. These include the control room with state-of-the-art building management system as well as the facility’s hot, cold and pastry kitchens. The Mayor also viewed the centre’s open-air rooftop terrace, with impressive views of the city and Table Mountain.

International experts in biomedicine will meet in CTICC 2 for the 18th International Congress of Immunology in August 2022. With a forecast attendance of 6 000 delegates, the conference will also be using both CTICC buildings.

While the new centre will host its first events over the coming months, contractors will complete the multi-faceted marshalling yard, roadworks around the centre, and add finishing touches to the building. Construction of the sky bridge across the Heerengracht connecting CTICC 1 with CTICC 2 will commence in 2018.

Still Going Strong After 45 Years The City’s longest serving firefighter, Pat Muir, comes from a proud tradition of three generations of firefighters with a collective experience of 118 years and still counting. He was recently commended for his service at an awards ceremony.

City of Cape Town firefighter Pat Muir (61) has dedicated 45 years of his life to the City’s firefighting services, making him the longest serving firefighter. He is currently the commander of fleet operations at the Milnerton Fire Station.

Firefighting is deeply ingrained in the Muir family DNA. Pat’s father Robert was in the service for 37 years, retiring as Chief Fire Officer of the then Milnerton Fire Department in 1985. His brother Rodney was a firefighter for 21 years, and his son, Rodrick, has just notched 15 years in the service. The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security; and Social Services, Alderman JP Smith, commended Mr Muir at an awards ceremony recently.

Pat joined the then Milnerton Municipality in 1972 as an apprentice petrol and diesel mechanic and after qualifying in 1975, he was transferred to the fire department in 1976.

Old Oak Interchange - The western portion of the Old Oak Bridge was demolished in May to make space for new lanes. It will be rebuilt over the next 14 months to new specifications. The construction of the inbound on-ramp bypass is complete and will facilitate traffic flow onto the N1 inbound. The construction of a retaining wall at the temporarily decommissioned inbound on-ramp is under way. Current traffic diversions will remain in place. Once the Old Oak inbound on-ramp has been widened and realigned, it will be re-commissioned for operation.

“I saw this as a challenging, adventurous, outdoor lifestyle and an opportunity to save the world,” he says.

For the past four-and-a-half decades, Pat has distinguished himself in the field, dealing with a wide variety of fires and emergencies across a diverse spread of circumstances – from fires, to emergencies like helping to deliver a baby, to being at the side of a person breathing his last.”

Plattekloof Interchange - The widening of the right hand side of the Plattekloof inbound off-ramp is under way. The left lane of the outbound on-ramp has been rehabilitated to address deformation and cracking. Once this work is complete, the entire interchange will be rehabilitated to extend the life of the pavement structure.

Durban Road Interchange - The widening of ramps at Durban Road Interchange has commenced. The contractor is constructing layerworks on the Durban Road outbound off-ramp, and is undertaking excavations for layerworks on the outbound on-ramp.

Employment and empowerment - This project is creating a number of shortterm job and skills development opportunities. To date, R9,7 million has been spent on targeted labour, while 12 500 person-days of work have been created for people from the City of Cape Town municipal area.

“Our first priority is always to protect lives, and then property. We try our utmost to prevent the spread of the fire and to minimise losses. The fear factor is always there and one often has to make split-second decisions, but a good firefighter knows to remain calm in an emergency and to allow common sense, training and experience to kick in,” says Pat. He remembers particularly hair-raising incidents and says that he is also haunted by traumatic incidents, especially those involving young children or older persons.

“In our profession happy endings are few as our assistance is usually required in distress situations. However, our reward comes in the satisfaction of being able to help others in their hour of need. While basic firefighting techniques have stayed the same over the years, the technology and equipment have improved exponentially. This includes the use of thermal imaging cameras, compressed air foam systems, and modern nozzles, pumps and extrication and stabilising equipment.”

“I can say with all honesty that I love what I do, and I love the people that I work with. No day is ever the same. If you want to get rich, then do something else, but if you want adventure and have a passion for helping others, then stay for the ride of your life,” he says.

Reuse and recycle is top of the hotel’s waste management agenda and a comprehensive training programme is currently underway to educate staff on “how”. The Table Bay has commissioned Postwink Recycling Solutions to assist with training staff as well as install various solutions to make the process of recycling easy to understand and implement. Its innovative recycling bins encourage separation of waste at the source while informative labels, reflecting The Table Bay’s branding, will be strategically placed to guide employees when choosing where to place items for recycling. The goal is simple; to reduce the amount of The Table Bay’s recycling that ends up in the landfill.

WOOF project, an initiative of Oscars Arc, a NPO born to inspire dog adoption and transform the dismal adoption rates in the Western Cape desperately needed transport to get dogs out of existing shelters and to the mobile adoption unit that moves around inspiring locations within the Western Cape.

MEDICLINIC SUPPORTS EYE CARE PPI INITIATIVE

Mediclinic is proud to be partnering with Groote Schuur Hospital and the Western Cape Department of Health in performing eight cataract surgeries at Mediclinic Milnerton as the start of a process aimed at alleviating the ophthalmic surgical waiting lists at public facilities in the province. Mediclinic welcomes the opportunity to assist with improving the lives of these patients and are positive that collaborative initiatives such as this will serve to promote shared expertise between the private and public healthcare sectors.

The procedures undertaken at Mediclinic Milnerton form part of a significant investment in collaborative Tier 1 CSI initiatives, where Mediclinic will be collaborating with the public sector on more than 110 operations on patients currently awaiting life-changing procedures. Operations include cataract, urology and tympanoplasty (otherwise known as eardrum repair procedures). Between September and December, the PPI procedures will be carried out at four Mediclinic hospitals in the Western Cape, either by doctors associated with Mediclinic or from the public sector.

The first phase of this initiative is concentrated in the Western Cape, but Mediclinic is currently in discussions to pursue similar partnerships in Mpumalanga, Limpopo and Free State in the near future. It is hoped that this will allow us to draw alongside additional hospitals to understand their needs and to share capacity where possible.

Koert Pretorius, CEO of Mediclinic Southern Africa stresses that all role players in the healthcare value chain need to work together to expand access to quality healthcare for all South Africans. “It is imperative for all players in healthcare to play their part, private and public alike.

This spring, our Werf became home to the Spier Farm Kitchen.

“We meticulously restored the werf so that it could once more become a hub of activity – where agriculture, artisan food and creativity find expression,” Mariota Enthoven, Spier’s family owner says.

“The opening of the Spier Farm Kitchen – which is housed in a building more than 200-years-old overlooking this historic farmyard – is the latest step in bringing this dream to life.”

From our farm salads to handcrafted pies: The Farm Kitchen offers everything you need to create your own delicious picnic as well as an assortment of gourmet goodies for your fridge and pantry. Executive Chef Lolli Heyns and her team use seasonal produce grown at Spier or sourced from trusted local suppliers to create nutritious, farm-inspired food.

Over the course of two intimate dinners at Eight hosted in July and August by Farmer Angus and Executive Chef Lolli, diners were introduced to the Spier way of growing and making food.

Farm-to-table: what does it mean? Sourcing as much as possible from our own farm – and the rest from trusted nearby farmers and suppliers who share our ethos. It means herbs and vegetables grown with love – and without harmful pesticides or artificial fertilizers.

Diners were invited to take fresh vegetables home with them – a tasty reminder of an unforgettable evening.

Diners made their own almond and rocket pesto – then slathered it on Hoghouse’s freshly baked sourdough. Fancy trying this at home? Get the recipe at spier.co.za/blog.

There’s much more to beef than fillet and sirloin. Farmer Angus explained the many various cuts – from ribeye to hangar steak – that he supplies to the farm as well as many of the Cape’s leading restaurants.

Farmer Angus’ chickens, pigs and cattle roam happily on Spier’s pastures. They’re reared without antibiotics or hormones.

Dishes on the five-course menu included Farmer Angus’s 28-day matured beef rib eye served with an olive crumble and mushrooms, pan-seared pork neck, and chicken bone broth accompanied by a hen’s egg and greens.

How do you make a positive difference to the environment?

I never litter. I also encourage my team to sort the bins accordingly: we take recycling very seriously at the conference centre, with less than 2% of waste sent to the landfill: we’re currently on a mission to get this to 0%.

It’s a very supportive environment where you’re really encouraged to reach your potential. The family owners are true custodians of the farm – they take a very long-term approach that prioritises value over profit.

He has transformed Spier from a small cellar into a major, award-winning Stellenbosch producer.

The Frans K. Smit red blend has been Spier’s flagship wine since 2006, paying tribute to this man’s great love of wine, his winemaking skill and his dedication to the process.

THIS YEAR, THE FIRST WHITE BLEND IN THE RANGE, CONSISTING OF SAUVIGNON BLANC AND SÉMILLON, HAS BEEN RELEASED. “This Bordeaux-style white offers balanced, subtly articulated flavours,” says Frans.

“Soft and refined, it’s round at the edges and has traces of the unexpected ̶ like

fig leaves on the nose and a hint of elderflower. This complexity of flavours comes from very selective sourcing and attention to detail. The presence of oak is a barelythere sensation, on the nose rather than the palate. This stirs yet more complexity into its wonderful creaminess – a trait I like to call ‘white tannins.’”

“The wine has a clean line of freshness, balanced acidity and complexity. This is the result of 14 months on the lees and the use of a very lightly toasted foudre barrel that brings tannin into the picture without any overwhelming vanilla presence. By the time juice met bottle, it was already beautifully integrated. There’s nothing too sharp or intrusive: it’s clean, fresh, refined and rounded,” he adds.

THE WINE’S HERBACEOUS NOSE GIVES WAY TO A TROPICAL PALATE OF CITRUS AND LIME. AFTER DECANTING, A TOUCH OF VANILLA RISES UP THROUGH THE LAYERS. With ageing, this vanilla is likely to fade into the background. Enjoy with fillet of cob, with butter and citrus or lemongrass; or steamed lobster with butter sauce.

Although it already offers balance and subtly articulated flavours, the 2015 vintage promises to become increasingly layered over the next four to five years. Peak drinking is eight years after harvest.

WC on top for leisure tourism in Domestic Tourism Survey Wesgro, Cape Town and the Western Cape’s Official Tourism, Trade and Investment Promotion Agency, is encouraged by yet another excellent performance by the Western Cape in Stats SA’s latest Domestic Tourism Survey (DTS).

According to Stats SA, ‘the DTS is a large-scale household survey aimed at collecting accurate statistics on the travel behaviour and expenditure of South African residents travelling within the borders of the country.’

The Western Cape achieved significant successes over the survey period, coming out top in the following important categories: More than 1.1 million overnight leisure trips; 166 000 overnight business trips; 4.1 million paid bed nights; 241 000 tourists who stayed in hotels; 161 000 who stayed in guesthouse/guest farms; 157 000 tourists who stayed in B&Bs; and 336 000 tourists who stayed in self-catering establishments The Western Cape was also the only province in which holidays was the most stated reason for travel amongst both day and overnight trips during the survey period, while visiting friends and relatives was the second-most commonly stated purpose to visit the province.

Further, 99.2% of day travellers and 69.9% of overnight travellers to the Western Cape originated from the province. Despite economic challenges, the Western Cape domestic market continues to travel within the province, sustaining the value of the local economy.

Class in the Clouds - Giving learners an opportunity to experience the beauty of the mountain and learn about the fauna and flora in a natural setting, Class in the Clouds runs annually from 1 March until 31 October, with schools paying R45 per learner. For every 10 primary school learners, or 15 high school learners, one teacher travels free. Since its inception in 2001, more than 250 000 learners have participated in the programme.

IMPI set to take the Winelands by storm The Wiesenhof Wildlife Park in Stellenbosch will be the hub of excitement on Saturday, 18 November 2017 and Sunday, 19 November 2017 when adventure seekers line up to partake in the much anticipated IMPI Challenge Obstacle Trail Run #4 Cape Town.

The IMPI Challenge is a spectacular trail run that features fun, but challenging obstacles. Although challenging, all obstacles are safe making the IMPI Challenge ideal for entrants of all ages. Cape Born, Dayaan Galiem Is One Of Sa's Rising Stars The 20-year-old has made a seamless transition from amateur to professional cricket over the past three years after an impressive junior career which saw him turn out for South Africa Under-19.

The former Rondebosch Boys High pupil who is a graduate of the Gary Kirsten Cricket (GKC), First Team 2 First Class (FT2FC) Programme is now all set to mix it up at the first ever, T20 Global League. Galiem was picked by the Cape Town Knight Riders alongside superstars like JP Duminy, Dale Steyn and England spinner, Adil Rashid.

GKC Head Coach, Ryan Cook praised Galiem’s hard work over the past few seasons and backs the youngster to grab the opportunity with open arms.

“It is great that he got picked up. As a youngster it is an amazing break,” Cook said. Having worked with Galiem during his school days, National Academy and at GKC, Cook believes he has all the attributes to succeed.

“He is a very talented individual with a great work ethic and tactical nous. He is able to bowl quite skillfully, bat in various positions and is also a very handy fielder,” Cook explained. Galiem’s work at the First Team 2 First Class Programme saw him attend sessions twice a week over a two and a half month period in Cape Town in 2015.”

“The programme is about trying to bridge the gap between top school and club players and the first class game. Dayaan has managed to make that jump very quickly,” Cook said.

“I am sure that the FT2FC programme was one of the contributing factors to his success. He has worked closely with our GKC coaching team over the last few years and still comes in for regular one-on-one coaching. We wish him all the best for the tournament and the season ahead,” he concluded.

Blitzboks to step up preparations at Assupol International 7s means that we don’t have to travel at all, while the quality of teams assembled for this will provide us with proper competition and competitive matches.”

A number of players who helped the Blitzboks to win the series in 2016/17 are currently involved in Currie Cup rugby and Powell feels the Assupol International 7s will be the perfect opportunity for them to get back in the sevens swing of things.

“You can train as hard as you want, live matches are still the best way to improve your game and test new things,” said Powell.”

“We are grateful to Assupol for sponsoring this, as it fits in perfectly in our planning for the forthcoming season that will also have a Commonwealth Games and Rugby Sevens World Cup on the calendar. The quicker we can get all our guys on the same page, the better, so this tournament will really help.”

Powell also confirmed the departure of regular Strength and Conditioning Coach, Allan Temple-Jones, who has taken up an overseas offer. “’TJ’ has been with the squad for more than 10 years and has been a core member to our successes,” said Powell.

The Springbok Sevens team will step up their preparation for the forthcoming HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in October, when they take part in the Assupol International 7s tournament in Stellenbosch.

The tournament, which was launched in Stellenbosch, will see South Africa in action at the Markotter Stadium on 28-29 October with fellow World Series contenders Scotland and Kenya, as well as the national sides of Zimbabwe, Namibia and Mauritius, and the England Academy Sevens team.

Springbok Sevens coach, Neil Powell, said this was an ideal opportunity to finetune their preparations for the 2017/18 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, with the first of those tournaments, the Dubai Emirates Airline Sevens, to be played a month later.

“The timing and venue of the tournament could not be better for us,” Powell said.

“The fact that is held next door to our base at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport

“He was part of both South African teams that won the series titles – last season and in 2009 – and that in itself is testimony of his ability. You can also add the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games and bronze at the Olympics Games to understand how successful he was.”

“I want to thank him for all the years of dedicated service and high performance.

We are sad to see him go, but understand his decision to leave and take up an offer he could not really refuse.”

The Assupol International 7s will host an international section with South Africa, Scotland, Kenya, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mauritius, All Stars and England Academy competing.

An international Under-17 tournament, where Argentina, Namibia and South Africa are amongst the participants, will also be held, supplemented by a Western Province club tournament.

Right to Fly - Cape Town International Kite Festival Embrace your right to fly and to have fun at the 23rd Cape Town International Kite Festival from 28-29 October in Muizenberg, Cape Town in support of Cape Mental Health. Kiters from China, England, Germany, Netherlands, South Africa and the USA will show that almost anything can fly, with fish, dragons and even a little pig adorning the sky.

The spectacular family festival has become South Africa’s biggest mental health awareness event. Hundred percent of the profits go to Cape Mental Health to help provide vital mental health services to children and adults in Cape Town and beyond.

“We all have the basic right to fly – to explore our abilities, develop our skills and soar freely at home, work, school and in our community,” said Ingrid Daniels, Director of Cape Mental Health. “Children and adults with mental health needs have the same human rights as everyone else and at our 23rd Cape Town International Kite Festival, we will be celebrating everyone’s ‘Right to Fly’, to be accepted, respected and included.”

Countdown to International Pinotage Day in October Every year, the second Saturday in October is always a highlight on the calendar as wine lovers around the globe celebrate South Africa’s national variety. Over the past four years since the first International Pinotage Day, interest in and excitement around the occasion has grown immensely.

“We are thrilled to see the passion in the build-up to 14 October as retailers and producers are busy organising various campaigns,” observes Beyers Truter, chairman of the Pinotage Association.

Come the big day, Pinotage will again be saluted at special events in the USA, the UK and Europe, with a number of South Africa’s foreign embassies also set to participate in celebrating the country’s Pinotage heritage.

On the local front, festivities are planned at many Pinotage farms and cellars with focused tastings and promotions to look forward to in the winelands and throughout the country.

The Pinotage Association is coordinating a central online platform where every activity associated with Pinotage Day will be showcased. Various famous Pinotage producers including Neethlingshof, Beyerskloof, Simonsig, Lanzerac and Kanonkop will be offering special tastings and events.
