The advertising industry has created a stirring tribute to the volunteers of the NSRI to mark the 50th anniversary of the organisation. Conceptualised by Ogilvy Cape Town and directed by Greg Gray of Romance Films, a powerful new TVC demonstrates the family sacrifices NSRI volunteers make every time they respond, without hesitation, to emergency calls. It shows a bride delivering a wedding speech about her absent father as he heads out into a stormy Cape ocean on a rescue mission.

Major N1 Upgrade Project Is Progressing Well

A R487 million Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) project to upgrade 9 km of the N1 between Plattekloof Road and Old Oak Interchange is 38% complete. Approximately 120 000 vehicles travel along this stretch of road during the morning inbound and afternoon outbound peaks.

HEALTH Page 8

The addition of a third lane in both directions will significantly reduce traffic congestion on one of Cape Town’s busiest roads. This project is expected to have been completed in April 2019. Work on installing the Freeway Management System (FMS) is complete. The first phase of median widening and barrier installation will be completed next month. Once this work has been completed, the widening of the road will commence.

The narrative is backed by the emotive soundtrack of Birdy’s ‘People Help the People’.

Jip de Jager Interchange - Work on the Jip de Jager Interchange is 89% complete, with asphalt rehabilitation and paving, the construction of two traffic islands, and some other minor works currently under way.

For over 10 years National Braai Day has lead the way in getting South Africans together, pulling the country closer with the pastime that is available to all - braaing. Lighting a fire is in our blood, prodding coals is innate, and standing in circles around the flame comes as instinctively as kicking World Cup winning drop goals. Continue Reading Page 4

Enderli’s says he is driven by his passion for life, his family and a desire to help others: “I believe in unleashing the mind’s full potential, constantly pushing boundaries to achieve dreams and helping make a difference by giving back.”

He singles out Greg Gray of Romance Films, Ricky Boyd of Deliverance Post Productions, and Marc Algranti of Pulse Music, as “putting in above and beyond on this project,” but says others donated props, lighting, vehicles, boats, casting services, specialized equipment and catering, among a multitude of things, as well as doing many hours of hard work. Gallarelli says the hope is that the TVC will inspire more public donations, which are the financial lifeblood of the NSRI, but the primary purpose was to pay a proper tribute to the unsung heroes from the past 50 years. “These are amazing, selfless and brave people who give up parts of their lives to save the lives of others and it’s really uplifting to see the way that key figures in our industry responded as they did to deliver this remarkable salute.” Watch the Video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/wLx8s4bCEoA

He has already completed the 34km English Channel and the 12.5km Strait of Gibraltar and through donations is raising funds for the National Sea Rescue Institute’s water safety programme to help prevent drownings. Enderli’s next swim is a hazardous 32km channel between Catalina Island and Long Beach, California, in October, 2017.

The NSRI has been an Ogilvy Cape Town pro bono client for many years and agency MD Luca Gallarelli is “proud of the film we’ve made, but even prouder of the generosity of spirit shown by so many people across the industry who devoted their time and skill to the project for nothing.”

SAY HELLO TO NATIONAL BRAAI DAY!

Of the 12 South African public holidays, there is no denying that the most eagerly anticipated each year is National Braai Day. Without a doubt, National Braai Day on 24 September 2017 will be the most fun and stress-free way to spend a public holiday; there is no pressure to run an ultra marathon, no expectations for Christmas presents - the perfect opportunity to unite around the fire, also heralds the start of summer.

“After sunrise I had 10km to go, could see land and reached a notorious ledge renowned for a vicious rip which has thwarted many swimmers. The current pushed me back for seven hours. It was soul destroying. But I dug deep, reminded myself I was doing this to help others and pushed on. Near the end I was faced with a huge shore break but got through and collapsed on the beach.”

“It was my toughest day on this planet and the longest night of my life,” said property consultant, Enderli who set off from Molokai Island across the 700m deep channel to Oáhu Island. “I encountered dolphins, saw two sharks which fortunately kept their distance and was stung consistently by jellyfish on my entire body, including my nose and face. It was the most painful thing I have ever experienced.”

The 20hr35min swim was the third in Enderli’s quest to become the first South African to complete seven of the world’s most brutal open water swims known as “Oceans Seven”, the marathon swimming equivalent of the Seven Summits mountaineering challenge.

Although the channel is 42km wide, Enderli - wearing only a Speedo costume, cap and goggles - covered about 58km due to severe currents to become the fourth South African, and 57th swimmer globally to successfully swim one of the world’s most treacherous bodies of water, also known as the “channel of bones”, notorious for claiming scores of seafarers’ lives.

The ‘Zeitz Mocaa Effect’ Will Provide Big Boost To Cape Economy The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa was officially launched during the Heritage weekend, 22-25 September 2017 in Cape Town. The Zeitz MOCAA, a partnership between the V&A Waterfront and Jochen Zeitz, designed by Thomas Hetherwick, is the first major museum in Africa dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora. The museum hosted a four-day public grand opening where no entrance fees was charged. This eagerly anticipated new Cape attraction promises to solidify Cape Town’s position as the continent’s design capital and have a profound effect on the local tourism and knowledge economy. The Zeitz MOCAA will also attract potential investors and buyers from across the world who will contribute to economic growth and job creation. The evidence for this multiplier impact can be seen elsewhere around the world, and the now famous ‘Bilbao Effect’ demonstrates exactly how this can happen. The Gugenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, completely changed the face of a city that was battling with a sluggish economy. The museum acted as a centerpiece for regeneration, inspiring innovation that led to growth and job creation. Visitor spending in Bilbao jumped after the museum opened, and five years after construction, Bilbao estimated that its economic impact on the local economy was worth €168 million, pouring an additional €27 million into the regional government tax coffers – the equivalent of adding 4 415 jobs. More than one million people annually now visit the museum, which became the centre of the Bilbao Art District. “If the interest and excitement surrounding the Zeitz MOCAA’s launch is any indication of the museum’s long-term appeal, it’s well on its way to replicating similar levels of success. We are confident that the ‘Zeitz MOCAA Effect’ will be referenced

in future too, as the museum contributes to growth and jobs in the city.” “We encourage South Africans to take advantage of the many opportunities to view this architectural masterpiece, and we welcome international visitors who have travelled to Cape Town to visit the museum. Please take the opportunity to visit the rest of our beautiful city and province while here. We are a region that is open for business, with an array of opportunities for trade and investment,” said Tim Harris, Wesgro CEO.

Mayor De Lille Conducts Final Site Inspection of CTICC East Expansion On 6 September 2017, City of Cape Town Executive Mayor, Patricia de Lille, declared the expansion of the Cape Town International Convention Centre, CTICC 2, ‘ready to welcome the world’. The Mayor conducted a final site inspection of the expansion with CTICC Chief Executive Officer, Julie-May Ellingson, to give her final seal of approval of the construction of the expansion before contractors hand over the building for occupation.

The City of Cape Town contributed R550 million towards the expansion costs. ‘In July 2014, I broke the first ground at the construction site. Now, in September 2017, we are standing in the impressive, light-filled reception hall of CTICC 2,” said Mayor De Lille. CTICC 2 is an elegant and modern expansion of the original building, now to be known as CTICC 1. The 31 148 m2 expansion adds 10 000 m2 of multipurpose conference and exhibition space through six halls located across two floors. The facility also include 3 000 m2 of informal and formal meeting space in the form of four larger meeting suites, a terrace room, and five smaller meeting pod rooms. Two modern rooftop decks provide the ideal backdrop for post-meeting cocktails. Unlike its original counterpart, the new centre is built across six floors and has more exterior balconies. CTICC 2 will also be able to operate as an independent facility. Its design received a 4-star Green Star rating by the Green Building Council of South Africa. The centre hosted its first event, the 21st annual Congress of the Council of Shopping Centres, from 13-15 September 2017. The third International Conference on Global Food Security will seek solutions to feed the earth’s nine billion people. The event takes place in CTICC 2 from 3 - 6 December 2017. In 2020, the World Ophthalmology Congress promises to attract 15 000 delegates and is the largest event the centre has secured in its 14-year history. The City would not have been able to win the bid for this event without an expanded convention centre.

The Mayor’s inspection included a tour of the impressive main conference and exhibition halls, meeting pod rooms, and the facility’s extensive back-of-house areas. These include the control room with state-of-the-art building management system as well as the facility’s hot, cold and pastry kitchens. The Mayor also viewed the centre’s open-air rooftop terrace, with impressive views of the city and Table Mountain.

International experts in biomedicine will meet in CTICC 2 for the 18th International Congress of Immunology in August 2022. With a forecast attendance of 6 000 delegates, the conference will also be using both CTICC buildings. While the new centre will host its first events over the coming months, contractors will complete the multi-faceted marshalling yard, roadworks around the centre, and add finishing touches to the building. Construction of the sky bridge across the Heerengracht connecting CTICC 1 with CTICC 2 will commence in 2018.

Major N1 Upgrade Project

Longest Serving Firefighter

Is Progressing Well (Continue from Page 1)

Still Going Strong After 45 Years The City’s longest serving firefighter, Pat Muir, comes from a proud tradition of three generations of firefighters with a collective experience of 118 years and still counting. He was recently commended for his service at an awards ceremony. City of Cape Town firefighter Pat Muir (61) has dedicated 45 years of his life to the City’s firefighting services, making him the longest serving firefighter. He is currently the commander of fleet operations at the Milnerton Fire Station. Firefighting is deeply ingrained in the Muir family DNA. Pat’s father Robert was in the service for 37 years, retiring as Chief Fire Officer of the then Milnerton Fire Department in 1985. His brother Rodney was a firefighter for 21 years, and his son, Rodrick, has just notched 15 years in the service. The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security; and Social Services, Alderman JP Smith, commended Mr Muir at an awards ceremony recently. Pat joined the then Milnerton Municipality in 1972 as an apprentice petrol and diesel mechanic and after qualifying in 1975, he was transferred to the fire department in 1976.

Old Oak Interchange - The western portion of the Old Oak Bridge was demolished in May to make space for new lanes. It will be rebuilt over the next 14 months to new specifications. The construction of the inbound on-ramp bypass is complete and will facilitate traffic flow onto the N1 inbound. The construction of a retaining wall at the temporarily decommissioned inbound on-ramp is under way. Current traffic diversions will remain in place. Once the Old Oak inbound on-ramp has been widened and realigned, it will be re-commissioned for operation.

“I saw this as a challenging, adventurous, outdoor lifestyle and an opportunity to save the world,” he says. For the past four-and-a-half decades, Pat has distinguished himself in the field, dealing with a wide variety of fires and emergencies across a diverse spread of circumstances – from fires, to emergencies like helping to deliver a baby, to being at the side of a person breathing his last.”

Plattekloof Interchange - The widening of the right hand side of the Plattekloof inbound off-ramp is under way. The left lane of the outbound on-ramp has been rehabilitated to address deformation and cracking. Once this work is complete, the entire interchange will be rehabilitated to extend the life of the pavement structure. Durban Road Interchange - The widening of ramps at Durban Road Interchange has commenced. The contractor is constructing layerworks on the Durban Road outbound off-ramp, and is undertaking excavations for layerworks on the outbound on-ramp. Employment and empowerment - This project is creating a number of shortterm job and skills development opportunities. To date, R9,7 million has been spent on targeted labour, while 12 500 person-days of work have been created for people from the City of Cape Town municipal area. Join the Department & Safely Home on Twitter @WCGovTPW, @WCGovSafelyHome under the hashtags #roadworksWC #AlwaysBuckleUp

“Our first priority is always to protect lives, and then property. We try our utmost to prevent the spread of the fire and to minimise losses. The fear factor is always there and one often has to make split-second decisions, but a good firefighter knows to remain calm in an emergency and to allow common sense, training and experience to kick in,” says Pat. He remembers particularly hair-raising incidents and says that he is also haunted by traumatic incidents, especially those involving young children or older persons. “In our profession happy endings are few as our assistance is usually required in distress situations. However, our reward comes in the satisfaction of being able to help others in their hour of need. While basic firefighting techniques have stayed the same over the years, the technology and equipment have improved exponentially. This includes the use of thermal imaging cameras, compressed air foam systems, and modern nozzles, pumps and extrication and stabilising equipment.” “I can say with all honesty that I love what I do, and I love the people that I work with. No day is ever the same. If you want to get rich, then do something else, but if you want adventure and have a passion for helping others, then stay for the ride of your life,” he says.

Dynamic Dog Adoption

Table Bay Hotel Brings R&R

Initiative - Woof Project

Home To Employees

‘Privat Car SA part of the Privat Car Group is proud to announce their support to the WOOF Project - providing the dynamic dog adoption initiative with a new Model Mercedes Benz Van Vito Class to chauffeur shelter dogs is style!

The Table Bay is encouraging employees to embrace some “R&R”. Reuse and recycle is top of the hotel’s waste management agenda and a comprehensive training programme is currently underway to educate staff on “how”. The training programme forms part of The Table Bay’s concerted and ongoing efforts to inspire green consciousness amongst employees and set an example of good practice for travellers and businesses that are looking to take steps to reduce their impact on the environment. According to, Joanne Selby, General Manager at The Table Bay Hotel, the programme aims to teach employees about recycling and the impact of environmental savings in a more accessible way. Much of the waste created in hotels stems from either food and beverage handling, which leads to waste materials such as packaging and food waste, aluminium cans, glass bottles, corks and cooking oils, or, from the housekeeping department, which creates waste such as cleaning materials and plastic packaging. Measures to deal with these issues have already been initiated in terms of separation of waste, plastic, glass, cardboard. The Table Bay has commissioned Postwink Recycling Solutions to assist with training staff as well as install various solutions to make the process of recycling easy to understand and implement. Its innovative recycling bins encourage separation of waste at the source while informative labels, reflecting The Table Bay’s branding, will be strategically placed to guide employees when choosing where to place items for recycling. The goal is simple; to reduce the amount of The Table Bay’s recycling that ends up in the landfill.

WOOF project, an initiative of Oscars Arc, a NPO born to inspire dog adoption and transform the dismal adoption rates in the Western Cape desperately needed transport to get dogs out of existing shelters and to the mobile adoption unit that moves around inspiring locations within the Western Cape. “Now they have the transport these dogs deserve,” says Joanne Lefson, Director of WOOF Project. “This exception sponsorship from Ronald Bussink, CEO and Founder of Privat Car and Patron Circle Member of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation means we can drive adoption rates upwards, even faster!” The WOOF Project already has successfully found new homes for more than 280 shelter dogs in its first 19 weeks and also opens a down town dog adoption center in the @FRITS dog park in Cape Town on World Animal Day, 4 October. “So many people tell us how much they love the project, but when someone like Mr Bussink actually puts their words into action and provides such an invaluable sponsorship that accelerates our mission, we are simply blown away and can save so many more lives.” The project offers a ‘Name Your Price’ adoption fee and a lifetime satisfaction, guaranteed! For more information visit www.oscarsarc.org

We Design & Develop Modern Websites

She concludes: “In everything we do, we strive to ensure that our business interests are harmonious with those of the environment. Our commitment to environmentally-sound business practices such as recycling is strategic. We want to reduce the need to landfill and extract value from re-usable or recyclable materials, and even add value by making compost from organic waste.”

Saving Our Planet One Load at A Time With drought becoming a harsh reality in the Western Cape region, water is an extremely valuable and scarce resource. South Africans have implemented various water-saving techniques, from using grey water to flush toilets, to taking two-minute showers and installing rain water harvesting tanks. One area of water usage that is particularly difficult to cut back on, is laundry. Regular washing machines can use up to 50 litres of valuable municipal drinking water per cycle. That said, refraining from washing our clothes is not an option! Green Planet Laundry has developed an innovative solution to the problem. Unlike other Commercial Laundries, the Cape Town based Green Planet Laundry does not tap into the city’s precious municipal water supply. The Water used at Green Planet Laundry is 100% ground water (borehole). Additionally, 50% of the grey water used in their machines is recycled, therefore further reducing required ground water. Water is extracted from a borehole then purified using a custom built water purification system to remove any contaminants. The water is then ozonated for sanitation and effectiveness in the laundry system and stored in a supply tank, from where it is pumped into Green Planet Laundry’s efficient and technologically advanced washing machines. Ozone is dissolved into the wash basin throughout the entire wash cycle.

START YOUR NEW BUSINESS WITH THE RIGHT BRANDING

WHY USE US

Benefits includes: O3 oxidises soils and eliminates microbes in the linen, leaving your clothing clean, sanitised and soft; it acts as a biocide, controlling odours and killing viruses and bacteria; and linen life is increased by up to 50%, while Fabrics feel softer, and are noticeable whiter. Green Planet Laundry uses absolutely no municipal drinking water in the washing process. The grey water used by Green Planet Laundry’s washing machines is recycled through the filtration plant, approximately 50% is reused. Due to the Ozone infusion process, less detergent is required to clean and disinfect clothing and less water is required for the wash and rinse cycles. The entire water purification system including the borehole will be powered by solar energy making their complete water purification system environmentally neutral.

SCAN AND TREAT WITH SOUND WAVES The Principle - Science has proven that every single object in the universe vibrates and resonates with its distinctive sound - a unique, natural frequency. This includes every individual body part as well as viruses, bacteria and parasites. Modern technology has enabled us to apply the correct relevant frequencies (sound waves) to scan and treat illness; kill viruses and parasites; and, most significantly, allow early detection of cancers and tumours!

What can it do? - A few examples of what the NLS System can diagnose and treat:

How Does It Work? - Using highly sophisticated computer programs and scientifically developed headphones, the NLS Bio-Resonance System collects data of all organs, body systems, cells, etc. from the brain, then transmits that back to the computer. This is instantly decoded and displayed on-screen in 3-dimensional models of organs, etc., enabling the Therapist to present diagnosis and recommendations.

SoundWaves Health Clinic in Gordon’s Bay specialises in this technology and offers all of the above and more - such as mammogram, “pap” smear, prostate check…totally non-invasive!

The most exciting feature of the software is “3-Dimensional Scanning”. This homes in on the area of a tumour or disease by identifying changes/abnormalities in the resonance (vibrations or frequencies) of body tissue. The root cause of a condition can thus be traced –and treated – even in the chromosomes/genes/DNA helix.

The procedures undertaken at Mediclinic Milnerton form part of a significant investment in collaborative Tier 1 CSI initiatives, where Mediclinic will be collaborating with the public sector on more than 110 operations on patients currently awaiting life-changing procedures. Operations include cataract, urology and tympanoplasty (otherwise known as eardrum repair procedures). Between September and December, the PPI procedures will be carried out at four Mediclinic hospitals in the Western Cape, either by doctors associated with Mediclinic or from the public sector. The first phase of this initiative is concentrated in the Western Cape, but Mediclinic is currently in discussions to pursue similar partnerships in Mpumalanga, Limpopo and Free State in the near future. It is hoped that this will allow us to draw alongside additional hospitals to understand their needs and to share capacity where possible. Koert Pretorius, CEO of Mediclinic Southern Africa stresses that all role players in the healthcare value chain need to work together to expand access to quality healthcare for all South Africans. “It is imperative for all players in healthcare to play their part, private and public alike. A severe shortage of doctors and nurses in the country hampers healthcare delivery in both the private and public sector and through our involvement in Public Private Initiatives we have the opportunity to add value beyond our traditional patient base,” says Pretorius. “As an industry leader in the private hospital sector, we welcome the opportunity to make a positive contribution through this collaboration. Mediclinic and others with relevant expertise want to be part of a process where the best dispensation can be found for South Africa without compromise on affordable and sustainable quality healthcare,” states Pretorius.

OUR NEW FARM KITCHEN PICNICS TO GOURMET TREATS FROM THE FARM

This spring, our Werf became home to the Spier Farm Kitchen. “We meticulously restored the werf so that it could once more become a hub of activity – where agriculture, artisan food and creativity find expression,” Mariota Enthoven, Spier’s family owner says. “The opening of the Spier Farm Kitchen – which is housed in a building more than 200-years-old overlooking this historic farmyard – is the latest step in bringing this dream to life.” From our farm salads to handcrafted pies: The Farm Kitchen offers everything you need to create your own delicious picnic as well as an assortment of gourmet goodies for your fridge and pantry. Executive Chef Lolli Heyns and her team use seasonal produce grown at Spier or sourced from trusted local suppliers to create nutritious, farm-inspired food.

TASTE THE FARM AN INSIDE LOOK AT OUR TASTE THE FARM DINNERS

Over the course of two intimate dinners at Eight hosted in July and August by Farmer Angus and Executive Chef Lolli, diners were introduced to the Spier way of growing and making food. Farm-to-table: what does it mean? Sourcing as much as possible from our own farm – and the rest from trusted nearby farmers and suppliers who share our ethos. It means herbs and vegetables grown with love – and without harmful pesticides or artificial fertilizers. Diners were invited to take fresh vegetables home with them – a tasty reminder of an unforgettable evening.

Diners made their own almond and rocket pesto – then slathered it on Hoghouse’s freshly baked sourdough. Fancy trying this at home? Get the recipe at spier.co.za/blog. There’s much more to beef than fillet and sirloin. Farmer Angus explained the many various cuts – from ribeye to hangar steak – that he supplies to the farm as well as many of the Cape’s leading restaurants. Farmer Angus’ chickens, pigs and cattle roam happily on Spier’s pastures. They’re reared without antibiotics or hormones. Dishes on the five-course menu included Farmer Angus’s 28-day matured beef rib eye served with an olive crumble and mushrooms, pan-seared pork neck, and chicken bone broth accompanied by a hen’s egg and greens.

LET YOUR CONFERENCE BE A LITTLE MORE FREE RANGE YOUR POSITIVE SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT WHEN YOU CONFERENCE AT SPIER

MEET MR CONFERENCING:

Ben Ngubesilo, Banqueting Manager Ben Ngubesilo has worked at Spier for the past 15 years. He loves interacting with different people. What do you love most about your job? I love meeting with different people all the time. We host many different kinds of events at Spier – everything from weddings and conferences to intimate private dinners – so you get to interact with people from all sorts of different backgrounds and parts of the world. What are you proudest of having achieved? Being appointed Banqueting Manager. When I first joined Spier I was a runner. What’s the key to being happy in life? Take any complaints as a challenge and see them as learning curve. What advice do you have for someone trying to get into your line of work? Skills will never fall from the trees – you’ve got to seek out learning if you want to progress. Where is your favourite part of the farm? The food garden. This is where herbs, fruit and vegetables are grown for Spier’s restaurants. It reminds me so much of my father’s garden.

How do you make a positive difference to the environment? I never litter. I also encourage my team to sort the bins accordingly: we take recycling very seriously at the conference centre, with less than 2% of waste sent to the landfill: we’re currently on a mission to get this to 0%. What’s the best thing about Spier? It’s a very supportive environment where you’re really encouraged to reach your potential. The family owners are true custodians of the farm – they take a very long-term approach that prioritises value over profit.

WINES

INTRODUCING THE NEW FRANS K. SMIT WHITE BLEND A NEW ICON PAYS TRIBUTE TO A MASTER Since he joined Spier in 1996, our cellar master, Frans Smit, has harnessed more than three centuries of winemaking history. He has transformed Spier from a small cellar into a major, award-winning Stellenbosch producer. The Frans K. Smit red blend has been Spier’s flagship wine since 2006, paying tribute to this man’s great love of wine, his winemaking skill and his dedication to the process.

THIS YEAR, THE FIRST WHITE BLEND IN THE RANGE, CONSISTING OF SAUVIGNON BLANC AND SÉMILLON, HAS BEEN RELEASED. “This Bordeaux-style white offers balanced, subtly articulated flavours,” says Frans. “Soft and refined, it’s round at the edges and has traces of the unexpected ̶ like

fig leaves on the nose and a hint of elderflower. This complexity of flavours comes from very selective sourcing and attention to detail. The presence of oak is a barelythere sensation, on the nose rather than the palate. This stirs yet more complexity into its wonderful creaminess – a trait I like to call ‘white tannins.’” “The wine has a clean line of freshness, balanced acidity and complexity. This is the result of 14 months on the lees and the use of a very lightly toasted foudre barrel that brings tannin into the picture without any overwhelming vanilla presence. By the time juice met bottle, it was already beautifully integrated. There’s nothing too sharp or intrusive: it’s clean, fresh, refined and rounded,” he adds.

THE WINE’S HERBACEOUS NOSE GIVES WAY TO A TROPICAL PALATE OF CITRUS AND LIME. AFTER DECANTING, A TOUCH OF VANILLA RISES UP THROUGH THE LAYERS. With ageing, this vanilla is likely to fade into the background. Enjoy with fillet of cob, with butter and citrus or lemongrass; or steamed lobster with butter sauce. Although it already offers balance and subtly articulated flavours, the 2015 vintage promises to become increasingly layered over the next four to five years. Peak drinking is eight years after harvest.

Woolworths & De Villiers Chocolate Launch In-Store Taste Experience Owner and founder of De Villiers Chocolate, Pieter de Villiers, says the launch of Woolworths’ De Villiers Chocolate Pod offers a new means to stay connected to established brand-fans and hopefully introduces new consumers to the brand. “De Villiers Chocolate’s success is due to direct feedback from our customers,” he said. “We relied on consumers’ responses when we started out selling at a stall at a farmer’s market, and, even though the brand has grown, we still value our relationship with our customers above everything else.” De Villiers says a one-on-one connection with customers remains vital. “With the launch of the De Villiers Chocolate Pod we will provide consumers with friendly, personal experiences allowing for conversations with brand ambassadors that will contribute to establishing a sense of trust and relationships with De Villiers Chocolate. People will really get to know our story.” The Woolworths chocolate pod will be a smaller version of the De Villiers Chocolate stores in Paarl and Franschhoek, and will stock the complete range of De Villiers Chocolates. Woolworths and De Villiers Chocolate have collaborated to launch the retailer’s first in-store DV Chocolate ‘pod’. The De Villiers Chocolate experience will be hosted at Woolworths’ flagship store at Waterstone Village in Somerset West. De Villiers Chocolate is one of Africa’s first bean-to-bar chocolate brands; made from cocoa beans personally sourced from cocoa bean farmers from around the African continent. Inspired by research indicating that consumers have an increasing interest in the origin of the brands they purchase, Woolworths’ chocolate pod will allow consumers to engage with De Villiers Chocolate through tastings, new product trials and information about the heritage of the brand and its products. In line with their Good Food Journey, Woolworths chocolate, and all products under the De Villiers Chocolate label are UTZ certified. UTZ is an internationally recognised body, which supports responsible and sustainable cocoa farming. “Woolworths uses suppliers who meet our high quality standards, and De Villiers Chocolate offers delicious products that our customers love,” says Woolworths Brand Head of Foods, Glenda Philp. “We are proud and excited about this new collaboration with them,” she explains.

Woolworths customers will be able to enjoy knowledgeable tutored guidance when selecting treats from the De Villiers Chocolate collection. Seasonal products will be launched on a quarterly basis at the De Villiers Chocolate Pod, with flavour and packaging combinations to complement various seasonal themes. De Villiers Chocolate started its trade journey at a farmer’s market in 2009, and has since flourished into a nationally loved and recognised brand, with products sold exclusively in Woolworths stores nationwide. De Villiers Chocolate also has standalone stores at Spice Route in Paarl and Franschhoek.

Benguela On Main - Meet the Chef, Jean Delport Amongst the bustling city traffic, Benguela on Main is a luxury getaway for a classic fine wine and dining experience. With a stylish elegance, a luxurious atmosphere and exceptional cuisine, Chef Jean Delport is taking Benguela on Main in Somerset West on a culinary crusade. Delve a little deeper and we get to know the innovator behind the delectable dishes. His love for fine food is reflected in the presentation and remarkable flavours. What originally started as a massive interest for food is fast becoming an obsession - distinctively mirrored in his mouth-watering menus. If Jean isn’t in the kitchen whisking up a storm, you can find him exploring the vast outdoors - his second home away from work - or catching the latest sport news to fuel his sports fanaticism. TRAVEL & TOURISM

WC on top for leisure tourism in Domestic Tourism Survey Wesgro, Cape Town and the Western Cape’s Official Tourism, Trade and Investment Promotion Agency, is encouraged by yet another excellent performance by the Western Cape in Stats SA’s latest Domestic Tourism Survey (DTS). According to Stats SA, ‘the DTS is a large-scale household survey aimed at collecting accurate statistics on the travel behaviour and expenditure of South African residents travelling within the borders of the country.’ The Western Cape achieved significant successes over the survey period, coming out top in the following important categories: More than 1.1 million overnight leisure trips; 166 000 overnight business trips; 4.1 million paid bed nights; 241 000 tourists who stayed in hotels; 161 000 who stayed in guesthouse/guest farms; 157 000 tourists who stayed in B&Bs; and 336 000 tourists who stayed in self-catering establishments The Western Cape was also the only province in which holidays was the most stated reason for travel amongst both day and overnight trips during the survey period, while visiting friends and relatives was the second-most commonly stated purpose to visit the province. Further, 99.2% of day travellers and 69.9% of overnight travellers to the Western Cape originated from the province. Despite economic challenges, the Western Cape domestic market continues to travel within the province, sustaining the value of the local economy.

“These excellent results bode well for further investment in the tourism industry, as there is continued demand for hotels, guest-houses, B&Bs and self-catering establishments.” “This has a multiplier effect on the local economy, and will lead to further construction, and job creation,” said Wesgro CEO Tim Harris.

Launch of new STB 360 #lovingStellenbosch Tourism Campaign Stellenbosch 360, the official tourism organisation for Stellenbosch and surrounds, launched the #lovingStellenbosch Tourism Campaign at its AGM recently. Stellenbosch has evolved into one of South Africa’s premier tourist destinations. It has also grown into one of the world’s top New World food and wine destinations, known and respected for its high-quality and global award-winning wines and cuisine. The town’s attractions vary from its renowned wineries and restaurants to its rich legacy of magnificent Cape Dutch and other architecture, museums, art galleries, educational and neotech institutions – as well as its botanical gardens with some rare plant species. Furthermore, Stellenbosch has also gained momentum as a global destination for its world-class sport facilities and natural mountainous outdoor surroundings attracting reputed professional sport men and women and adventurers in disciplines such as cycling, athletics, rugby, swimming, running, hiking and others. The #lovingStellenbosch campaign acknowledges the importance of motivating and involving both local inhabitants and visitors in promoting and building brand Stellenbosch as a ‘special and preferred tourist destination’. “Many other places can be admired for their natural beauty, monuments, cultures, lifestyle experiences and institutions. However, it’s Stellenbosch’s rich legacy of diverse experiences, emotions, memories, nostalgia and stories that must be “lived” or “experienced” to be treasured, to inspire and to be projected to others!” On 7 September 2017 the campaign was launched with the first of four videos, with Stellenbosch as a ‘Magnificent Quality Destination’ as the theme. Discover/ experience/diversity/astounding as the key campaign pillars words will cover local aspects such as Food & Wine, the Café Culture & Relaxed Lifestyle, Art & Architec-

ture & Icons. The video will focus on how the inhabitants and visitors ‘experience’ and ‘live’ the town and what they consider as the ‘magic’ of Stellenbosch. “We are very enthusiastic about the new #lovingStellenbosch campaign and believe that this initiative will motivate both local inhabitants and visitors to connect with one another as they share why they love the experience - whether it be of a fleeting nature or a way of life. The campaign will recognise the rich cultural heritage of the locals and their contribution in making Stellenbosch the most inspiring and innovative town in South Africa,” says Annemarie Ferns, CEO of Stellenbosch 360. The new #lovingStellenbosch campaign with its emotional and nostalgic content will run in addition to the well-established #visitStellenbosch hashtag.

THE POETRY

PETIT FOX, ONE-STOP E-SHOP

With their latest range of dresses, Poetry proves that there is life beyond the LBD. Their mission is to make every woman feel beautiful, stylish and comfortable.

Some things will never change. As long as there are birds and bees, people will always have kids. And those kids will outgrow their clothes at a wallet-crunching, morale-sapping rate that any parent can identify with. With tough economic times and growing awareness around recycling, people are more than ever ready to challenge the ever-growing retail industry with an alternative economy. Enter Petit Fox, a fast-growing South African e-commerce business, has the potential to become a household name amongst parents of 0 - 8 year olds. Petit Fox is all about offering top-class second-hand kids clothing and maternity wear at affordable prices and makes it easy for parents to sell the clothes their kids have outgrown, that are new or in great condition. The philosophy is that all parents should be able to afford quality clothes for their kids without spending a fortune or damaging the environment. Petit Fox’s one-stop e-shop saves both time and money. It’s an innovative solution for parents to quickly and easily make some cash and create some space in their cupboards by selling the clothes their kids have outgrown, or didn’t wear at all! Everything is done online. Clients send their clothes via courier and they can choose to be paid via EFT or get in-store credit.

DRESSTINATION UPDATE Since launching in 2016, Poetry’s Dresstination collection has answered women’s need for easy-to-wear, simple dresses and has grown vastly in popularity. As a result, the 2017 range is even bigger and offers a host of styles to meet any dress sense. “We have given great thought to putting together this collection to ensure that there is something for every woman, regardless of her shape or style. There are tunics to slip on and go, wrap dresses to accentuate curves, maxi dresses for floor-skimming coverage and fit-and-flare styles to give form.” We want to accompany the Poetry woman on her journey. Our styles are for warmer summer days, feeling fun and flirty, or modern and minimalist. Each dress has a hint of romance in the way the garment falls, flairs or in the soft fabric and prints we have selected,” says Mari Crause, Poetry’s leisure wear buyer. In addition to Poetry’s versatile reversible styles, the collection includes dresses with statement sleeves, bare shoulders and ruffles, as well as lacy cut-outs, pleats and the current must-have print: tropical foliage. Minimalists need not despair – the Dresstination range also offers simple shifts with statement (nonfrilly) bows and tunic dresses. Poetry not only focused on fashionability when building the Dresstination range, but also stayed mindful of functionality to ensure the dresses are wearable and versatile. The dominant fabrics therefore are cool linen, breathable cottons and viscose, as well as rayon that skim and drape, to compliment all shapes and sizes. The dresses are available in a variety of colours including feminine, soft dusty pink and greens, vibrant yellow and hot coral with colder hues such as navy, black and white, complimenting the warmer shades. Customers will fall in love with waistless silhouettes that speak to a sense of freedom and adore the elevated casual styles in linens and lightweight fabrics, which can be dressed up or down – perfect for any occasion. SAVES PARENTS BOTH TIME AND MONEY

Clothes that don’t meet Petit Fox’s strict criteria are either sent back or donated to charity. Buyers get a hand-wrapped package delivered by courier or they can collect at one of the nation-wide collection points. Petit Fox is unique and the primary focus is on quality and sell clothes from almost any brand, provided they are in pristine condition. The best part for sellers is that Petit Fox pay upfront. Parents don’t have to wait for their items to sell to get paid. The network of couriers with collection and drop-off points allows anyone, anywhere in the country, to be a Petit Fox customer. Petit Fox’s goal is to reverse the negative perception that brand-oriented consumers have towards buying pre-owned clothing for their kids and make second-hand shopping online mainstream in South Africa. By focusing on quality and customer satisfaction, Petit Fox is cultivating a clean and trustworthy image, which parents feel comfortable with. For more information visit www.petitfox.co.za

Cape Born, Dayaan Galiem Is One Of Sa's Rising Stars The 20-year-old has made a seamless transition from amateur to professional cricket over the past three years after an impressive junior career which saw him turn out for South Africa Under-19. The former Rondebosch Boys High pupil who is a graduate of the Gary Kirsten Cricket (GKC), First Team 2 First Class (FT2FC) Programme is now all set to mix it up at the first ever, T20 Global League. Galiem was picked by the Cape Town Knight Riders alongside superstars like JP Duminy, Dale Steyn and England spinner, Adil Rashid. GKC Head Coach, Ryan Cook praised Galiem’s hard work over the past few seasons and backs the youngster to grab the opportunity with open arms. “It is great that he got picked up. As a youngster it is an amazing break,” Cook said. Having worked with Galiem during his school days, National Academy and at GKC, Cook believes he has all the attributes to succeed. “He is a very talented individual with a great work ethic and tactical nous. He is able to bowl quite skillfully, bat in various positions and is also a very handy fielder,” Cook explained. Galiem’s work at the First Team 2 First Class Programme saw him attend sessions twice a week over a two and a half month period in Cape Town in 2015.” “The programme is about trying to bridge the gap between top school and club players and the first class game. Dayaan has managed to make that jump very quickly,” Cook said.

“I am sure that the FT2FC programme was one of the contributing factors to his success. He has worked closely with our GKC coaching team over the last few years and still comes in for regular one-on-one coaching. We wish him all the best for the tournament and the season ahead,” he concluded.

Blitzboks to step up preparations at Assupol International 7s means that we don’t have to travel at all, while the quality of teams assembled for this will provide us with proper competition and competitive matches.” A number of players who helped the Blitzboks to win the series in 2016/17 are currently involved in Currie Cup rugby and Powell feels the Assupol International 7s will be the perfect opportunity for them to get back in the sevens swing of things. “You can train as hard as you want, live matches are still the best way to improve your game and test new things,” said Powell.” “We are grateful to Assupol for sponsoring this, as it fits in perfectly in our planning for the forthcoming season that will also have a Commonwealth Games and Rugby Sevens World Cup on the calendar. The quicker we can get all our guys on the same page, the better, so this tournament will really help.” Powell also confirmed the departure of regular Strength and Conditioning Coach, Allan Temple-Jones, who has taken up an overseas offer. “’TJ’ has been with the squad for more than 10 years and has been a core member to our successes,” said Powell. The Springbok Sevens team will step up their preparation for the forthcoming HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in October, when they take part in the Assupol International 7s tournament in Stellenbosch. The tournament, which was launched in Stellenbosch, will see South Africa in action at the Markotter Stadium on 28-29 October with fellow World Series contenders Scotland and Kenya, as well as the national sides of Zimbabwe, Namibia and Mauritius, and the England Academy Sevens team. Springbok Sevens coach, Neil Powell, said this was an ideal opportunity to finetune their preparations for the 2017/18 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, with the first of those tournaments, the Dubai Emirates Airline Sevens, to be played a month later. “The timing and venue of the tournament could not be better for us,” Powell said. “The fact that is held next door to our base at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport

“He was part of both South African teams that won the series titles – last season and in 2009 – and that in itself is testimony of his ability. You can also add the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games and bronze at the Olympics Games to understand how successful he was.” “I want to thank him for all the years of dedicated service and high performance. We are sad to see him go, but understand his decision to leave and take up an offer he could not really refuse.” The Assupol International 7s will host an international section with South Africa, Scotland, Kenya, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mauritius, All Stars and England Academy competing. An international Under-17 tournament, where Argentina, Namibia and South Africa are amongst the participants, will also be held, supplemented by a Western Province club tournament.

Oyster & Champagne Festival 2017 @ Hillcrest Quarry The theme for the event is Gold and White, dress up and stand a chance to win the prizes for the best dressed couple. Join this year’s annual Oyster and Champagne Festival from 14-15 October at Hillcrest Quarry in Durbanville and get a good dose of delectable oysters, coupled with fabulous Champagne, good music and an upmarket selection of foods and treats. What is the difference between Champagne and Méthode Cap Classique (MCC)? Champagne - Can only be made using grapes grown in Champagne, a province in north eastern France. Regardless of the method used to make it, anything else is simply not Champagne. Méthode Cap Classique (MCC) - MCC is the South African version of Champagne. MCC is made using the original, bottle fermented process used by the French. Every step of the process aside from the grapes, is the real deal. The quality of our grapes coupled with the expertise of our wine makers is such that our MCCs rival some of the best French champagnes. Some featured at this year’s event we are: Villiera, Haute Cabriere, Pierre Jordan, JC Le Roux, Pongracz and Krone.

Oysters - In 2005 research supported the view that oysters contain a rare amino acid that has been linked to reproductive success. Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love who sprang forth from the sea on an oyster shell and promptly gave birth to Eros got it right. Oysters are “alternating hermaphrodites”, which means they can switch sexes from time to time. Only about one in 10,000 oysters contains a pearl. Sue-Ann Allen became a household name in 2012 as the runner-up in the 1st season of MasterChef South Africa. Together with another 2 chefs, they will be demonstrating the preparation of mouth-watering recipes over the weekend. Other highlight include: non-alcoholic drinks, with their allnatural rooibos craft ice tea, while Moët will create platters that include a selection of fresh delectable sushi served with chilled champagne, and Gelato on the Go will be featuring the wellloved Italian ice-cream Gelato. Tickets available at Computicket
