Cape Town is continually affirming its place as the events capital of Africa by securing key international and local events over the next 12 months. Eight of these signature events are set to contribute more than R3 billion to the local economy and create more than 20 000 temporary jobs.

In 2012, the City launched its Integrated Events Strategy and set out to become the events capital of Africa. Cape Town is recognised globally as the leading events destination on the continent. The City’s event support budget has grown tenfold: from R4 million in 2012 to R40 million in the 2016/17 financial year. The increase has enabled the support of 198 local and international events, with nearly half allocated to cultural events, 40% to sporting events, and 12 % to conferences.

“We are working with our partners in Convenco and Wesgro’s convention bureau in order to strengthen our Marketing, Incentives, Conferencing and Event (MICE) Strategy which, we see as key to growing both our tourism market and our fast growing business tourism brand,” says Cape Town Executive Mayor, Patricia De Lille.

Sleeping Bags Made From Recycled PVC Wins Gold For Street Sleeper Recycling used billboards made from end of life PVC banners not only help keep thousands of homeless city dwellers warm and dry, but has now also received the recognition it deserves from South Africa’s plastic recycling fraternity by walking away with a Gold Award in the category “Novel and Artistic Products” during the South African Plastic Recyclers Organisation (SAPRO) Best Recycled Product of the Year Awards held in Johannesburg recently.

“Street Sleeper is a Cape Town based initiative that uses innovation to tackle the social and environmental challenges facing the homeless community. We upcycle PVC advertising billboards destined for landfill into survival sleeping bags,” explains Oliver Bain, the founder of Street Sleeper.

Since 2014, Oliver and his team has made more than 8 000 sleeping bags (1 500 last year alone). Each bag uses 4sqm of end of life PVC banners thereby upcycling more than 32 000sqm (or 13 tons) of PVC billboards. Bags are distributed through feeding centres, like-minded businesses and volunteers who wish to actively engage with their homeless neighbours.

SAPRO Chairman, Rudi Johannes, highlighted that the empathetic nature of the product and the volumes of goodwill left the panel of judges suitably impressed. Delanie Bezuidenhout, CEO of the Southern African Vinyls Association (SAVA), accepted the Gold Award on behalf of Oliver and his Street Sleeper team.

Major N1 Upgrade Project Is Progressing Well

A R487 million Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) project to upgrade 9 km of the N1 between Plattekloof Road and Old Oak Interchange is 38% complete. Approximately 120 000 vehicles travel along this stretch of road during the morning inbound and afternoon outbound peaks.

The addition of a third lane in both directions will significantly reduce traffic congestion on one of Cape Town’s busiest roads. This project is expected to have been completed in April 2019.

Work on installing the Freeway Management System (FMS) is complete. The first phase of median widening and barrier installation will be completed next month.

22 Year Old Entrepreneur Is Changing The Way We Interact In The Business Sphere (Continue from Page 1) Born in Cape Town, Carl spent most of his childhood years between Namibia, the United States of America, and Ireland due to his father’s work commitments. Carl describes himself as ambitious, innovative, and driven so much so that he has completed a diploma in Programming at CTI and is currently studying a Construction Engineering course on a part-time basis through the University College of Estate Management in the United Kingdom. “I believe that every young adult should use their ambition and energy that they have now and not wait for tomorrow to come - read as much as possible, learn from every conversation and keep pushing your mind,” says Visagie.

According to Visagie the best choice he has made was becoming an entrepreneur at the age of 20. “The risk, the failures, the successes and the learnings I have done over the past three years, has made a positive impact on my life so far and I hope to make those changes in people’s lives, not only through KnektMe, but also through my future ventures,” he added.

KnektMe was not an easy task to produce, but was a challenge Carl was ready to take when he realised that networking as a young individual was just as difficult. Five months of intense development has led to the arrival of the business networking mobile app in South Africa. “My proudest moment was at KnektMe’s launch event when I saw guests log onto the app and started connecting with one another. It is still an on-going process as I find more and more ways to improve the app – it can never be perfect, but that will not stop me from trying,” explains Carl.

When asked where he sees himself in the future, Carl stated that he would like to work towards creating one of the biggest technology businesses in Africa and also start up a biotechnology company with his brother which will specialise in solutions to save the environment.

Carl explains, “I look up to Elon Musk, my role model, who is a South African making huge strides towards changing the world for the better, and one of my favourite quotes of his is – ‘I think it’s very important to have a feedback loop, where you’re constantly thinking about what you have done and how you could be doing it better. I think that’s the single best piece of advice: constantly think about how you could be doing things better and questioning yourself.’ So, this is what I will do.”

Vineyard Hotel Wins International Sustainability Award Cape Town’s Vineyard Hotel was announced the winner of the international Skål Sustainable Tourism Awards in the Urban Category, at the opening ceremony of 78th Skål World Congress that was held in Hyderabad, India on 6 October 2017.

Three independent experts in sustainability, judged entrants from 28 countries according to a series of criteria including nature preservation, carbon offsetting, climate change mitigation, human rights protection, local employment, etc. Judges were impressed with the sustainable journey the owners and management of the Vineyard Hotel have undertaken since 2006.

Since 2006 staff and friends of the Vineyard have committed time and resources to clearing invasive plants from a 8.5 hectare area at Silvermine, in the Table Mountain National Park. River and beach clean-ups are also undertaken. The hotel’s 7.5 acre garden is maintained using natural, eco-friendly principles. As a result, owls have made their homes in the boxes in the garden and many birds and animals, including a spotted genet, visit this urban oasis. The hotel also has permits to look after 12 indigenous tortoises that have been dropped off by members of the public.

“Two renewable energy projects are in place: a 20kW 80 panel installation and a 60 panel PVT solar and PV combined installation generating 15kWp electrical and 75kWp thermal energy. Nearly all lights are LEDs, a pool cover was installed on our heated indoor pool, timers on external lights, central control of air conditioners in conferencing, efficient hot water storage, airconditioner controls in rooms, efficient laundry and dishwasher facilities. Green energy certificates are procured from the City of Cape Town to offset the energy component of the Vineyard’s conference centre. On average we are recycling 92% of our waste.”

“The Western Cape is experiencing the worst drought in 100 years, and significant reduction in water consumption was required. In January 2017, our highest daily usage was 148 kilolitres. We implemented changes starting with installing 28 meters to monitor consumption. Guests were asked to participate ­– we removed the bath plugs, installed shower timers, stepped up maintenance and repairs to leaks, and implemented other interventions. As a result, we are using 75 kilolitres per day – a 50% saving – with our lowest daily consumption rate being 47 kilolitres.”

“In 2016 our staff attended 6 550 hours of training, divided over more than 40 training interventions, with a food & beverage service skills programme.”

“This programme was also open to unemployed learners who, with their newly acquired skills, can apply for positions in-house and elsewhere.”

Last year the Vineyard also offered 15 learnerships, 22 internship placements and 18 in-house traineeships, with 12 trainees enrolled for culinary arts through SACA and 6 studying towards a hospitality management qualification through the International Hotel School and CPUT. Furthermore, the hotel is a regular host to matric students plotting their career after school by offering job shadow opportunities in various departments. The hotel is certified a Fair Trade Tourism property, and has focused outreach efforts via their Kids of the Cape Project, which supports a number of organisation.

The Skål Sustainable Tourism Awards aim to highlight sustainable tourism, which is defined as “tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities.”

Stories of remote journeys, ground-breaking expeditions, and cutting-edge adventures told through the eyes of adventurers, authors, photographers, and filmmakers from around the globe, come to life during the annual Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour 2017, courtesy of Cape Union Mart. South African audiences are also treated to the screening of an additional five-minute film: the winning submission from the Cape Union Mart Adventure Film Challenge. This annual film competition encourages South African filmmakers, adventurers to capture and celebrate local outdoor culture.

“To expand our efforts of building an inclusive city, the City is also allocating more permits to enable communities to celebrate our diverse cultures and sport. In the 2016/17 financial year, we processed 1 856 applications and issued 1 447 permits – up from 1 244 permits in 2012. The City supported 11 events in 2012 and this increased to 198 events supported in 2016/17 financial year,” De Lille continues.

Dewald Brand (32), this year’s winner, adds. “I decided to enter because I’d recently done my first real hiking trip in Norway. It made me fall in love with the outdoors even more than before, especially combined with filming. I made a film of that Norwegian trip and while scouring online to find hiking film festivals, I found the Cape Union Mart Adventure Film Challenge and decided to enter.”

Brand met Christiaan Pretorius and the SA Fly Fishing Team by chance at the Dubai airport. “We all had a couple of hours’ layover. I was filming with a chef and photographer and Chris saw the camera toys, so we started talking.

We stayed in touch and about two years later started filming One Fly At A Time.

Chris is a professional fishing tour guide all over the world, and we do quite a bit of travelling too, so it was difficult to coordinate our diaries as well as the weather.”

“Plus, for some reason the days that we did go out to film there weren’t any fish.

We had to keep going back until we found the prefect light along with the perfect fish! He jokingly adds that the film was completed about an hour before submissions were due. The introduction to the film was shot at the Pescatarian Society in Cape Town and the outdoor scenes were filmed in the Du Toit’s Kloof region. Brand adds that the highlight of filming was “spending time outdoors in Mother Nature with excellent company – the perfect combination.”

Cape Town has become the envy of many global cities as a result of its wideranging events portfolio with more domestic and international visitors making their way to our city to enjoy and compete in events. Events provide enormous benefit to the local economy and play a pivotal role in generating visitor expenditure. It is important for the city that this translates into economic inclusion of all communities in Cape Town. The City’s own major events include: Switching on of the festive lights, Cape Town Summer Market, New Year’s Eve celebration in conjunction with the V&A Waterfront and Assistance with funding the Tweede Nuwe Jaar Minstrel Carnival.

Some of the major events on the Cape Town International Convention Centre’s calendar for the next few weeks include AfricaCom 2017, the Windaba and the Brand Summit and Awards South Africa.

The City’s aims to create stability in the events industry and ensure that these events return to the city each year.

“By taking events to the next level, we will enhance their economic impact and tackle socio-economic challenges in our communities by creating more muchneeded jobs. We are also making it easier for organisers to obtain permits for their events.”

Only events with crowds bigger than 200 attendees need to apply for a permit.

The application process consists of five steps. Safety at events is one of the key factors the City looks at when issuing a permit. Organisers must include a safety plan, emergency plan, and medical plan when they submit their application. The City is developing an electronic permitting system to enable organisers to submit and track their application online.

“While we must celebrate the economic and social benefits that these events bring to our shores, the City is also ensuring that they are sustainable and they don’t place a burden on our scarce resources, including water,” De Lille concludes.

Phones Keeping Students From Concentrating During Lectures aged to develop blended learning initiatives and bring tech – videos, podcasts, Facebook pages, etc. – into the classroom more and more to offer students the enhanced experiences enabled by digital media.

They warn, however, that an important effect of these initiatives has been to establish media use during university lectures as the norm.

“Studies by ourselves and researchers across the world show that students constantly use their phones when they are in class.

“But here’s the kicker: if you think they are following the lecture slides or engaging in debates about the topic you are mistaken. In fact, this is hardly ever the case.

When students use their phones during lectures they do it to communicate with friends, engage in social networks, watch YouTube videos or just browse around the web to follow their interests.”

The researchers say there are two primary reasons why this form of behaviour is problematic from a cognitive control and learning perspective.

Digital technologies, especially smartphones, have become such an integral part of our lives that it is difficult to picture life without them. Today, people spend over three hours on their phones every day.

“While ever-smarter digital devices have made many aspects of our lives easier and more efficient, a growing body of evidence suggests that, by continuously distracting us, they are harming our ability to concentrate,” say researchers Dr Daniel le Roux and Mr Douglas Parry from the Cognition and Technology Research Group in the Department of Information Science at Stellenbosch University. Le Roux heads the research group, while Parry is a doctoral candidate. Their work focuses on the impact of digital media, particularly phones, on students’ ability to concentrate in the classroom.

According to them, today’s students are digital natives ̶ individuals born after 1980 – who have grown up surrounded by digital media and quickly adapted to this environment to such an extent that “they are constantly media-multitasking, that is, concurrently engaging with, and rapidly switching between, multiple media to stay connected, always updated and always stimulated.”

The researchers say it shouldn’t be surprising that university lecturers are encour-

“The moment the lecture fails to engage or becomes difficult to follow, the phones come out.” The researchers say awareness of this trend has prompted some lecturers, even at leading tech-oriented universities like MIT in the United States, to declare their lectures device-free in an attempt to cultivate engagement, attentiveness and, ultimately, critical thinking skills among their students.

“No one can deny that mobile computing devices make our lives easier and more fun in a myriad of ways. But, in the face of all the connectedness and entertainment they offer, we should be mindful of the costs.”

The researchers encourage educational policy makers and lecturers, in particular, to consider the implications of their decisions with a much deeper awareness of the dynamics between technology use and the cognitive functions which enable us to learn.

Winning Young People Hack Retail Security MoreEyes, a team of young people from Cape Town, won R20 000 and incubation support for their innovative security solution at the Santam Hackathon which took place at the SABC Education SA Innovation Summit recently.

The Santam Hackathon asks radical geeks, lateral thinkers, innovators and problem solvers to find solutions to South Africa’s safety and security challenges.

One such challenge is in-store robberies, particularly where employees are complicit in the crime. MoreEyes have a solution: the use of biometric data to recognise and possibly prevent such crimes.

The idea is to utilise facial recognition, heart rate and body temperature data to determine stress levels of employees and customers in the store. This data can then be used to identify current or imminent threats and can help alert security personnel while confirming the culprits of the crime.

It is the second time that Tamarana, who comes from the Mdantsane township in the Eastern Cape and is currently a student at Red & Yellow School in Cape Town, is part of a winning team at the Santam Hackathon. Last year he was part of a team that came up with a transport solution, similar to Uber, for servicing disabled people in rural areas.

The City of Cape Town has kicked sand in the eyes of other coastal cities and again boasts the highest number of Blue Flag beaches in the country. In addition, Seaforth Beach was awarded pilot Blue Flag status for the summer season and will be considered for full Blue Flag status if certain criteria are met within a specified period of time.

Blue Flag is an international accreditation awarded to beaches that display excellence through meeting 33 criteria covering four categories: environmental education and information, water quality, environmental management, and safety and services.

Participation in this international programme is voluntary and the status indicates that the beaches are clean, have adequate ablution facilities and parking, are environmentally sound, are safe and secure to visit, and adhere to international safety and tourism standards. The accreditation is awarded for one season at a time and if conditions deteriorate at the beach, it can be withdrawn.

The City has successfully participated in the Blue Flag beach programme since its inception in South Africa in 2001. Not all beaches in Cape Town have Blue Flag status, but Alderman Smith emphasised that this was not a negative reflection on the beach.

Three marinas also achieved Blue Flag status. They are the Water Club at Granger Bay, Harbour Island, and the False Bay Yacht Club. Blue Flag marinas help to ensure better business opportunities for tourism enterprises, while promoting economic development in the boat-building industry, thus creating job opportunities.

The Western Cape has achieved the highest number of Blue Flag sites this year, with 28 of the 44 beaches, all 11 boats (tourism boats that do environmental tours and educational programmes), and six of the seven Blue Flag marinas falling in the province. This is an increase of three Blue Flag boats from the previous season, and one additional marina.

For Cultivating Emotional Intelligence

Through Education And Training Programmes

Of the twelve years that children spend at school, the foundation phase - years one through four - are the most critical for cementing the long-term potential of children and enabling them to become successful adults, an education expert says.

“It goes without saying that academic excellence is important, but developing children’s emotional intelligence may literally make the difference between success and failure in their lives,” says Chris Van Niekerk, head at Founders Hill College, part of Africa’s largest private education provider, ADvTECH.

Since 1995, the City of Cape Town’s Adult Education and Training (AET) programme has empowered thousands of employees and helped them to enhance their skills. This has in turn equipped employees with the necessary skills to improve service delivery to residents.

The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Councillor Raelene Arendse, visited the City’s Training Centre in Pinelands on 2 October 2017, to meet some of the students. The AET programme gives employees the opportunity to improve their literacy and numerical skills, which will assist them in further career development. There are currently 258 students registered for the AET programme.

According to Councillor Arendse, the outcomes-based AET programme helps to foster a positive attitude among staff, improving self-esteem. It further enhances service delivery by giving staff members a better understanding of the value of their contributions in making this a well-run city. The AET programme consists of four levels where employees can improve their skills, with various learning areas such as communication and numeracy, life orientation, travel and tourism, and small, medium and micro-enterprises.

He says that when undertaking the important task of investigating schooling options, parents and guardians should consider more than the academic or sporting achievements and track record of a school, and also enquire about a school’s approach to instilling vital life skills. “Nurturing emotional intelligence should be considered as important as teaching children to read, write and do arithmetic - if not more – and schools, parents and communities have a duty to ensure this fundamental life skill is not left by the wayside,” he says.

“It’s in years one to four that children learn to love learning; learn about a world that challenges and rewards; and learn what makes them who they are: unique human beings who hold a wealth of potential and who can do anything they put their hearts and minds into. It is during these years that these skills become part of the child’s character and personality: guiding their decisions, helping them make sense of the world, and being the foundation of their relationships with others.

Starting with five-year-olds is the best place to start.”

Emotional intelligence can be described as a set of softer skills that help children grow up to become “likeable”, successful human beings who can accept that not everybody in the world is going to be like you, agree with you or think like you. More than this, it’s understanding that this diversity is not only good and desirable, but to be celebrated and embraced.

“It’s learning how to give and take: to compromise and to negotiate. It’s learning to relate to others: to empathise and communicate your own feelings in a situation.

It’s learning to listen to what other people say, and how to speak your own mind.

It’s acquiring the skills and the confidence to articulate your feelings and ideas, and it’s learning to identify what it is, exactly, that makes you respond the way you do to people and situations around you. Critically, it’s learning how to manage those feelings, instead of letting them manage you.”

Van Niekerk says that emotional intelligence skills aren’t ones that can be taught in lesson slots on the timetable and should form part of all interactions, whether during academic, social or physical activities. Additionally, provision should be made for assisting children who show signs of needing early intervention to reach emotional intelligence milestones.

“Success cannot only be measured academically and professionally. It is measured by the quality of our relationships, and by our ability to lead meaningful, effective lives,” concludes.

One of the achievers is Lumkile Ludziya who joined the AET programme in 2007.

Through determination and perseverance, Lumkile passed all four levels and was promoted. He went on to complete his General Education and Training Certificate and is currently acting as a senior foreman within the Transport and Urban Development Authority.

Awie Daniels is another shining example of what can be achieved through dedication and hard work. Awie joined the AET programme in 2008 as a Level Four student. After completing his General Education and Training Certificate in 2009, he completed his Matric in 2010. He also completed a certificate qualification in Project Management.

Some of the other employees who successfully completed last year’s programme are Leon Field, Fabien Koopman and Faeez Stevens. They excelled in the Level Four learning area of small, medium and micro-enterprises. One of the many advantages of the AET programme is that it creates a foundation for further skills development, which in turn enhances life skills as it contributes towards knowledge enrichment and self-confidence.

The donation of R150 000 made to the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital will contribute to the launch of the first child-produced radio station, where patients get trained as producers and presenters to assist other patients in their struggles to alleviate their anxiety and loneliness, whilst spending some time in hospital.

For over two decades the SSISA has led the way in providing sport, fitness and wellness information and services to both health professionals and the general public, but predominantly via workshops and courses. Using the online platform is an exciting development and allows for a much greater reach and facilitates effective distribution of educational material, provided by top experts, to consumers.

Given the huge increase in childhood autism cases, it’s the best time to step up for a jog or walk in aid of the Boland School for Autism.

In addition, medals, cash prizes and lucky draws are at stake when the Afrikaans Language Monument’s and Paarl Athletics Club’s annual Evening Run takes place on Wednesday, 6 December 2017 on the picturesque Paarl Mountain.

The fun 5km Word Race is aimed at the whole family, while the 10km Evening Run, follows an exciting and challenging route on tar and dirt roads.

Participants can register in three ways: online before 1 December at the Language Monument, as well as on the day of the race itself.

Boland School for Autism, a registered non-profit organisation, was founded in 2010 and houses tens of learners from as far as Tulbagh, Stellenbosch, Saron and Wellington.

The school’s team consists of teachers, assistants, occupational and speech therapists, a biokineticist, an educational psychologist and a school manager who all firmly believe that every child has the right to education. Parents cannot always afford all these services, thus the monument offers this opportunity to help raise money.

The Education Hub, which encompasses the educational platform and Learner Management System – is housed on SSISA’s website. First in the line-up of courses on offer, are “Training Essentials and Programme Design for Endurance Running” and “Periodisation and testing for football conditioning.

Aimed at coaches, teachers, trainers, parents and sport enthusiasts keen to improve their knowledge - these courses will ensure learners have a positive learning experience and are equipped with cutting edge information,” says Justin Durandt who has spear-headed the development of the Education hub.

What makes the courses so special is the level of interactivity in the courses themselves. The courses use presentations with dynamic graphics and voice overs, videos and screencasts to ensure that the content is engaging for the learner. In addition each learner will receive practical tools which will enable them to use the skills they have learnt once the course is finished.

An example of this is our running course where the learners will receive 9 training programme templates. Learners can access the content at any time and there are no requirements to finish modules in a specific amount of time. Hot on the heels of these courses – will be a range of others in the sporting and fitness arena.

WINNER OF TRIP TO RUN THE BARCELONA MARATHON The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, together with Sanlam and ASICS, are delighted to announce the winner of the 2018 all-expenses paid trip for two to next year’s Barcelona Marathon. The winner is twenty seven year old Capetonian Willem le Roux.

In 2010 Willem took up running and ran his first Comrades in memory of his father. Since then he has completed six standard marathons, three Two Oceans Ultras and five Comrades Marathons. Furthermore, Willem uses running as a vehicle for positive change.

Running for a cause all began, says Willem, when “In 2014, my wife dared my running partner and I to run a marathon in SA Flag swimming trunks. She was joking, but soon realized that we were not. We drew a lot of attention and had such a laugh that we decided to keep running in swimming trunks for a good cause – the Love your Nuts Foundation. The foundation raises awareness of testicular cancer in young men by educating them about early detection. A few days after this year’s Sanlam Cape Town Marathon a young man saw photos of us on social media. He went to the website, watched the videos, felt a lump, saw his doctor, and got early detection and treatment. Running and making a difference is extremely rewarding, this is why the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon resonates with me at such a deep level.”

“Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is one of my favorite races which I highly recommend to any runner. As always, this years’ race did not disappoint. It really is an excellent race and overall great experience. My wife Lindy will be joining me in Barcelona,” says Willem. It will be her first full marathon. We have always talked about travelling the world and running the different races. When we heard we had won this prize, we realized it was the perfect opportunity to start living that dream,” says Willem.

Extreme Openwater & Ice Swimmer takes up the Torpedo challenge Entries are still open for the second Torpedo SwimRun, which takes place on 19 November 2017 in Cape Town. Extreme open water and ice swimmer Ryan Stramrood has entered the race with fellow extreme swimmer Mark de Klerk as his teammate. Ryan has never worn a wetsuit for open water swimming before, and he does not own a pair of running shoes, but has decided to step far out of his comfort zone to take up the challenge.

– athletes with one common thread – the love of being in nature and challenging their bodies. SwimRun will see these athletes compete against each other over terrain that is both foreign and familiar to them, with short beach-to-beach swims and bursts of running, scrambling and rock-hopping.

Ryan is a well-recognized inspirational speaker, and spends significant time pushing all his audiences to remove themselves from anything that resembles a comfort zone. The mental process and toughness needed to overcome and greatly extend time in extreme cold water conditions will inform his training, but when it comes to Torpedo SwimRun, Ryan considers himself a novice: “Torpedo SwimRun is a great opportunity to do just what I say – to my push personal boundaries and go into territory unfamiliar to me. I have never run an official race before, and participating wearing a wetsuit and running shoes will certainly be a whole new ballgame for me and my teammate Mark.”

“With only five weeks left before the race, we are getting stuck into learning how to run and experimenting with swimming in a wetsuit and shoes! I am not used to competing with anyone but myself, so this race represents a significant number of firsts for me, and we are looking forward to it.”

There are 6 swim segments (totalling 3km) and 6 run segments (totalling 13km) and athletes will experience parts of the coastline not usually accessible to the public. Wetsuits and running shoes are kept on for the duration of the event as there are no transition zones; you simply get out of the water and run – until the next swim leg.

The Torpedo SwimRun is a two-person team race where teams swim and run together from start to finish across Cape Town’s most iconic beaches and bays, with Llandudno, Oudekraal, Camps Bay and Clifton forming part of the 16km route.

Food Garden Offers Hope For Pre-Schoolers

The children of Hangberg are no strangers to violence. Just last month the seaside neighbourhood erupted into protests over fishing quotas, and the shooting of a teenager by police sent shockwaves into the wider community. Scenes like this are commonplace in this neighbourhood hard hit by unemployment, drug abuse and perlemoen smuggling syndicates. Yet, in the midst of the tension, there are tendrils of hope.

Urban Harvest, a Cape-Town based organisation that creates inner-city, sustainable food gardens opened a new garden at Hangberg pre-primary school. The garden is part of the school’s ambitious aims to create hope for a new generation in Hangberg.

Children who had the chance to work in a community garden also benefit from positive bonding experiences with adults. This is crucial in Hangberg where many children have been traumatised by abusive adults. Drug dealers openly peddle in the streets. Because it is relatively cheap, Tik (or methamphetamine) is the drug of

Research has shown that people’s dietary habits are developed in childhood and persist throughout their lives. According to a leading study conducted in the UK, a school garden, especially one in which the community is involved, can significantly boost children’s’ daily intake of fruit and vegetables. At the end of the day the garden project is part of a holistic approach taken by the school to provide children with the tools they need to be successful later in life.

Update on Agri Processing Agriculture choice for many. Studies show that children born to tik-addicted mothers are prone to moodiness, aggressivity as well as poor concentration (similar to ADHD). This is just one of the challenges teachers face at the school.

The garden, uniquely crafted into the shape of a mandala, has been designed by Urban Harvest’s Ben Getz to help instill a sense of tranquillity and peace in those who spend time there. Studies have shown that school gardens can boost life skills and help children to work cooperatively. However, this patch of green will not just nourish the spirit, but hungry bellies too.

The garden project, which was sponsored by the Real Thing Supplements, will provide organic produce for the school’s kitchen which prepares two hearty meals for the children daily.

Jobs In The Western Cape

Despite the drought, more than 100 000 jobs have been added to the Western Cape’s agri processing and agriculture sectors since the launch of the province’s Project Khulisa growth strategy.

Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities, the Western Cape Government team who are driving the strategy and Wesgro, today (17 October 2017) delivered a mid-term update on Project Khulisa Agri-processing, which was launched in 2014.

Jobs growth, progress on skills development and transformation were among the key points raised at the briefing.

The impact of threats like drought and avian influenza (AI) on the economy were also discussed. Project Khulisa was launched in 2014 with the target of adding 100 000 jobs to the agri-processing sector, and growing the Gross Value Add (an indicator of all the goods and services produced by the sector).

In order to achieve these objectives, three strategic initiatives have been identified: capture a larger share for the Western Cape’s of the global Halal market; increase exports of wine to China and Angola; and to improve local production capacity for domestic and key strategic markets.

“Wesgro’s 8 year old agri-investment unit has been very successful to date and it is clear that our work is having a real, positive impact in the Province. In the past 3 years the unit has secured R1.4 billion in investment, creating 1268 jobs in the Western Cape. Both of these were well above the targets set. There are also currently 26 exciting opportunities in the unit’s pipeline to the value of R1.5 billion.

“We have surveyed producers in the sector, and they expect an average decline in production of around 36.9%. If this scenario transpires, this would translate to R4.96 billion GVA decline for 2017/8, which represents 27% of our sector. The potential impact are job losses of 35 634. This is why we have committed to supporting commercial and emerging farmers, and have spent R67 million to date in monthly support.”

Volvo Ocean race stopover in Cape Town For the 11th time the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town will host the Volvo Ocean Race from 24 November to 10 December 2017.

The 17 day event is a platform to showcase the South African Maritime and Ocean sectors to both local and international audiences.

Not only is Cape Town the stopover’s most sought-after location, but the V&A Waterfront’s involvement with the popular event will see a roll-out of educational programmes and projects to promote environmental sustainability and resilience, called the Ocean Life Festival.

During the Volvo Ocean Race last stopover in 2014-15 the event catapulted South Africa into the international spotlight, and was viewed by over 150 million people around the world, and contributed more than R540-million to the national economy.
