A team of nature-loving South Africans in partnership with Google Street View have released a large collection of 360degree imagery of the country’s wildest areas. The announcement of 170 new trails in South Africa’s national parks and reserves follows on from The Mzansi Experience launched in March 2016, which showcased prominent tourist attractions such as Kruger National Park, Table Mountain and Cape Point amongst others.

Miss Universe 2017 Winner Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters

Miss South Africa 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters has been crowned Miss Universe, becoming the first Miss South Africa to take this prestigious title since Margaret Gardiner won in 1978. At the pageant, held in Las Vegas in the US, an ecstatic Demi-Leigh competed against 91 contestants from around the globe – the biggest number of entrants in the history of the competition – and justified the faith thousands of South Africans had that she would win. Runners-up were Miss Colombia (first princess) and Miss Jamaica (second princess).

The new trails extend the existing Street View imagery of South Africa’s wilderness areas to include all 19 national parks, 17 previously ‘un-trekked’ nature reserves and many sites of natural, cultural and historical significance in all nine provinces of South Africa.

The 22-year-old from Sedgefield in the Western Cape was one of the hot favourites going into the pageant and received huge support from around the world on social media. In the end, the Top 16 comprised four entrants from Asia Pacific and Africa; four from Europe; four from the Americas and four wild cards voted for by the judges.

“Since its launch in 2013, PERA has supported businesses across the Western Cape to grow, and we have invested close to R6 million in this initiative. This is because we know that hard-working entrepreneurs need access to a support network, and funding, to achieve success. Over 1200 entrepreneurs have been part of the PERA journey in the past four years, and I hope these awards have also served as a platform to inspire more residents to consider entrepreneurship as a career. I wish the 2017 winners well, and commend them for partnering with us to drive growth and job creation in the Western Cape,” said Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities.

“The world’s most valuable commodity is networking. Having the right people supporting you is a key factor in whether your business makes it big or falls flat,” says Visagie. “KnektMe is not just another social networking site or directory of names, it allows you to interact with real people around you, wherever you are, and in real-time.” Continue Reading Page 3

Cango Wildlife Ranch is considered among the world’s top tourist attractions and conservation education destinations situated in the heart of the Garden Route only 3km from the centre of Oudtshoorn. CAPE TOWN - A CITY TO LIVE, WORK, PLAY AND INVEST

Cape Town is continually affirming its place as the events capital of Africa by securing key international and local events over the next 12 months. Eight of these signature events are set to contribute more than R3 billion to the local economy and create more than 20 000 temporary jobs.

TRAVEL & TOURISM Page 8

In 2012, the City launched its Integrated Events Strategy and set out to become the events capital of Africa. Cape Town is recognised globally as the leading events destination on the continent. The City’s event support budget has grown tenfold: from R4 million in 2012 to R40 million in the 2016/17 financial year. The increase has enabled the support of 198 local and international events, with nearly half allocated to cultural events, 40% to sporting events, and 12 % to conferences. “We are working with our partners in Convenco and Wesgro’s convention bureau in order to strengthen our Marketing, Incentives, Conferencing and Event (MICE) Strategy which, we see as key to growing both our tourism market and our fast growing business tourism brand,” says Cape Town Executive Mayor, Patricia De Lille. The Ranch offers visitors the once-in-a-lifetime experience of interacting with ambassador species. Aside from the amazing experience of crocodile cage diving (first in the world), they also offer encounters with cheetahs, snakes, tegu’s, lorikeets, lemurs and servals. Cango Wildlife Ranch, home of the Cheetah Preservation Foundation, believes in conservation and knows that extinction is forever. The work done at the Ranch by their dedicated staff takes on a whole new meaning when you realise that the people involved in saving animals and educating the general public, will never see the result of their work in their lifetime. Nevertheless, they will keep on doing their best to ensure that extinction becomes just another word in the dictionary and not a reality.

Franschhoek Wine Tram Double Deck Trams Celebration The Franschhoek Wine Tram celebrated the introduction of two double deck railway trams at a lavish function hosted by Vrede en Lust and the Lust Bistro recently. With an impressive view of the surrounding vines and the imposing Simonsberg mountain, guests were addressed by Dana Buys of Vrede en Lust, Hein Koegelenberg representing the Franschhoek Wine Valley Tourism Association and Minister Anton Bredell, the Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development. Over the past five years the Franschhoek Wine Tram has grown its offering from a short rail journey in a 32-seater open sided tram visiting just 2 wine estates in the Franschhoek Village, to a service that today spans the entire Franschhoek Wine Route, visiting 22 wine estates, with the opportunity to spend between half an hour to an hour on the almost 5-metre tall 80-seater double deck railway trams. The introduction of the double deck railway trams will allow the Franschhoek Wine Tram to host in excess of 120 000 guests in the upcoming 2017/2018 tourist season. Dana Buys spoke enthusiastically of the direct positive impact experienced by Vrede en Lus,t due to the Franschhoek Wine Tram and the new double deck railway tram. A theme that was echoed by attending wine estate owners. Highlighting the need for innovation in tourism, Hein Koegelenberg, drew attention to the fact that the Franschhoek Wine Tram is regarded as the most recognizable and successful private wine tourism initiative in the world.

Minister Bredell drew parallels between the Franschhoek Wine Tram and the V&A Waterfront in that both have continued to “reinvest and reinvent their offerings”, and added that “by launching new products, these landmarks continue to attract more visitors”. He went on to highlight the direct job creation related to the Wine Tram operation as well as the substantial indirect economic effects experienced by the 22 participating wine estates and the Franschhoek Valley tourism sector as a whole. The celebration concluded with a return trip along the newly opened railway line between the Simondium and Groot Drakenstein Stations, with magnificent views of the valley farms and vineyards flanked by the ever present Simonsberg.

Miss Universe 2017 Winner Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters (Continue from Page 1) “I resonate with everything that the Miss Universe organisation stands for, especially empowering women across the globe. I have always tried to be the example of the change I want to see in the world, and this platform will give me the opportunity to make a difference. I hope I have made South Africans proud and that I will continue to do so during my reign,” she said. During her time as Miss South Africa, Demi-Leigh launched her highly successful Unbreakable campaign to empower thousands of young girls and women throughout the country, by teaching them skills on how to handle difficult situations like hijackings, muggings, robberies and toxic relationships. She partnered with specialists to give women the necessary knowledge to be able to handle any unwanted situations. She held six workshops around South Africa and has said she would like to promote this campaign internationally. Demi-Leigh wowed both the judges and the audience in a sheer fleshtoned, long-sleeved hand beaded dress by Anel Botha. It was inspired by the constellations and consisted of 50 000 hand placed Swarovski crystals which took a team of eight people 168 hours to complete. The Miss Universe pageant was hosted by Steve Harvey and Ashley Graham. Judges for the finale included Wendy Fitzwilliam (Miss Universe 1998 from Trinidad and Tobago); Jay Manuel (TV host, creative director and makeup artist); Ross Mathews (TV personality); Megan Olivi (Fox Sports 1 host and reporter); Lele Pons (Vine and YouTube personality) and Pia Wurtzbach (Miss Universe 2015 from the Philippines). Before she was crowned Miss South Africa, Demi-Leigh had completed her B. Com in business management and entrepreneurship and was a part-time model. Demi-Leigh’s father and stepmother Bennie and Elzabé Peters and mother and stepfather Anne-Mari and Johan Steenkamp were in the audience and were overcome when Demi-Leigh’s name was announced. Said Chief Executive Jose Dos Santos of Miss South Africa sponsors Cell C: “We at Cell C could not be more delighted with Demi-Leigh’s win at the Miss Universe pageant. We know that she will make South Africans proud and will leave a tangible legacy for the Miss Universe brand as she continues to empower and inspire women all over the world. She is living proof of our brand values, that if you dream it and believe it you can achieve anything with hard work and passion.”

Photo: Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters Winner of Miss Universe 2017

It was a sentiment echoed by Sun International PR Manager Claudia Henkel: “We at Sun International are very proud of Demi-Leigh. It has been an exciting few years for us, as the licence holders of Miss South Africa, as we have had two international pageant winners crowned. First with Rolene Strauss winning Miss World and now Demi-Leigh as Miss Universe. She is most certainly going to make South Africa proud.”

City Firefighters Prepare For A Tough Summer Apart from the expected increase in wildfires over summer, the City’s Fire and Rescue Service has also had to adjust its game plan to accommodate the current drought crisis. The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service is gearing up for an increase in wildfires fanned by strong winds that have become a common feature during summer. Over and above the regular daily demands on firefighters, Cape Town experiences anywhere between 6 000 – 9 000 vegetation fires during the warmer months. To ensure readiness for this period and the safety of residents in line with the Organisational Development and Transformation Plan, the Fire and Rescue Service employs 120 seasonal firefighters. The seasonal staff members are specifically trained to fight wildfires and will complement the efforts of the City’s more than 800 professional firefighters. A minimum of 240 firefighters are on duty per 24-hour shift at the City’s 30 fire stations across Cape Town. In terms of equipment, the City is acquiring a number of new vehicles, including four vacuum tankers, five rescue vehicles, and two fire engines. “We have already taken delivery of 14 skid units and will also acquire the services of two helicopters and a spotter plane from 1 December 2017.”

Experience South Africa's National Parks on Google Street View

(Continue from Page 1)

More than 200 South African volunteers from across the country were involved in the 12-month project, mapping out the parts of South Africa that they call home. Many were SANParks, CapeNature and KZN Ezemvelo Wildlife rangers and guides. Others were avid hikers, nature-lovers and tech enthusiasts. Mate Modisha, a field ranger at Cape Nature’s Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve is one of 206 South Africans to carry the Google Trekker camera. The project forms part of Google’s Street View Camera Loan Program, which encourages anyone to apply to borrow the 360-degree camera technology and help map the planet. The team of volunteers was coordinated by loan program partner Drive South Africa. Andre Van Kets, outdoor enthusiast and founder of the Cape Town-based travel company, saw the potential in this technology to showcase South Africa to travellers around the globe, when applying to the program. “The Trekker camera is a 22kg custom-made backpack fitted with 15 cameras pointing in all directions. The on-board technology plots the camera’s exact location on the trail. While recording, the camera takes a 360-degree photo every twoseconds. It’s basically the off-road equivalent of Google’s Street View cars,” says Van Kets. “For the first time, travellers and wildlife lovers from across the globe, can explore the full spectrum of South Africa’s diverse wilderness areas on Google Maps and Street View,” he added. Street View users can now walk in the footsteps of struggle icon Nelson Mandela, climb seven new trails to the top of Table Mountain, hike the famous five-day Otter Trail, track cheetah on foot and walk with elephant and other incredible wildlife (the trekkers were guided by qualified rangers in all wilderness areas).

While fire prevention is the top priority to this end, the Fire and Rescue Service is increasing its education and awareness campaigns around fire safety in the home, at work, and in public spaces. Where fires do occur, the service has started implementing initiatives to mitigate the use of potable water for fire fighting efforts. All property owners, businesses and facility managers in the public and private sector need to educate themselves about how to prepare for fires during this period of extreme drought and water rationing. Speak to your insurer and other relevant bodies to ensure you are aware of all requirements and consequences of fires during a time of drought when water pressure will likely be low. The City is not liable for any consequences or damage to private infrastructure resulting from the rationing or associated operations. For more information visit www.capetown.gov.za

Additionally, seven of South Africa’s eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites are now waiting to be experienced. Users can see Mapungubwe Hill, home to an ancient African civilisation, the Richtersveld with its arid moonscapes, the towering Drakensberg Mountains, and iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s oldest UNESCO site and a critical habitat for a range of species. To showcase the launch of South Africa’s new Street View imagery, Drive South Africa has launched a microsite that gives would-be travellers a virtual experience of South Africa. The microsite South Africa in 360 - inspired by a similar project showcasing the US National Parks - is an immersive VR-adventure through South Africa’s four top tourist destinations and a collection of its lesser-known gems. The site is a culmination of Street View imagery with video, photos and stories from the trail, offering viewers unique perspectives.

La Paris Bistro - New luxury eatery in the Franschhoek valley The La Paris Bistro, comprising a chic restaurant and deli, and an on-site bakery, is the newest luxury eatery in the Franschhoek valley conceptualized and developed by the owner Sebastian Rodenburg, and in-house interior architect Ashleigh Ratcliffe. La Paris Bistro is conveniently located in the Winelands, along the R301 between Franschhoek and Paarl. La Paris Estate dates back to 1699 and many of the original buildings have been meticulously restored to be incorporated into the modern estate. Their gabled facades and chalk white walls contrast the lush green gardens. Inspired by luxurious comfort and natural materials, the La Paris Bistro is an experience in modern sumptuous styling, featuring indoor palms and hanging ferns. The Bistro restaurant is set atop beautiful solid wood French Oak floors. The outdoor terrace under the estate’s towering oak trees and umbrellas, opens onto lush lawns and the estate’s expansive courtyard. BISTRO RESTAURANT Chef Nico Vorster brings years of experience in fine cuisine, at 5 star establishments and leads the kitchen of chefs. He describes his style as “elegant food, of daring flavours and familiar favorites.”

For bubbly drinkers, the bar offers an extraordinary range, from Louis Roederer Cristal to Laurent Perrier Brut and Jacquart Rose, from local Colmant Brut to French Veuve Clicquot. All are served in elegant tall-stem flutes. BISTRO DELI The Deli is a fresh produce and supply store, carrying local and imported products. The Bistro Bakery makes fresh breads for the Deli daily, and the fresh bread smell welcomes shoppers. There is also a comprehensive selection of fruits and vegetables, cheeses and meats, and biltong which can be bought in strips or sliced by Deli staff. The Deli has two walk-in wine cellars, one for red and one for white, collectively with over 70 wines, Champagnes, Dessert Wines and MCCs. Freshly-made authentic Deli Sandwiches are also available for take-away order in the Deli, along with coffee, juices, teas and cakes by the slice. BISTRO BAKERY In addition to supplying the Deli and the Bistro kitchen, The Bistro Bakery bakes delicious cakes, and offers an extensive range. From birthday cakes, to popular favorites like carrot and cheese cake, red velvet and chocolate gateau, cakes can be made to order and collected at the Deli. The Bakery moto “Life’s too short not to eat Cake” is stamped into every cake box, and after tasting the La Paris Bakery cakes, there’s little doubt about that.

Breakfast at the Bistro is served from 08:30 to 11:00, from a comprehensive menu of fruit bowls, egg dishes like full farm breakfast, omelettes and light options like the Franschhoek smoked salmon croissant with cream cheese and capers. A Farm to Table philosophy means that wholesome authentic fresh food is sourced locally and responsibly. This inspires a menu of healthy and sumptuous dishes, a real mix of light options like cured salmon, pickled cucumber, sesame slaw and rice bowls, to delicious mains like mango-ginger prawns with citrus couscous, seared beef salad with gorgonzola and peckham pears, or craft beer battered linefish and handcut chips. Lunch is available from 12:00, and guests can expect mains in the range of R80 to R130.

The Bakery claims their iced caramel sponge cake, with macadamia brittle and caramelized popcorn topping as an all-out favorite, and orders for this cake should be made days in advance. The Bakery also produces impressive wedding cakes, convenient as the La Paris Estate also hosts weddings. THE WINERY Weddings are hosted in three stunning venues: a 400 seater crystal chandeliered venue called The Lyceum, a 120 seater black and white marbled venue called The Winery complete, with historic wine tanks, and outdoor venues in the Rose Garden and the circular Arbour venue among tall tightly-clipped hedges.

The coffee menu is extensive, and includes mixed coffee drinks like caramel lattes, frappes, iced nougat coffee and a signature rose cappuccino. The La Paris Bistro truly welcomes families, and children are catered for with a special menu of meals, and with milkshakes and yummy deserts. There is also a childrens’ outdoor play area with jungle gym, slides and benches, close to where the estate horses Applejack and Freckles can be seen too. On colder days, the Bistro offers two couch corners with warming wood-burning fireplaces, rugs and coffee tables for an afternoon with coffee or early evening with red wine and platters; either cheese or charcuterie. BISTRO BAR The Bistro bar is a large 8 seater French Oak bartop, with stocked bar shelves that extend high above the bar. The bar has been stocked with wines and craft spirits that showcase local farms and distilleries. There are over 70 locally-sourced wines, craft beers on tap and the barman slings all the modern-favourite cocktails, and mixes with local craft spirits.

The Estate is a delight to explore and take in. From the white horses in their paddock, to the manicured gardens. The La Paris Bistro promises to spoil its guests, and its curated farm estate surroundings please the eye, and leave one feeling relaxed and calm. THE

Strong Demand & Competitive Pricing Sees Almost 50% of Land Sold In Firgrove Industrial Estate Almost 50 percent of the total 27ha of serviced industrial land has now sold in Firgrove Industrial Estate, a prime-located hub just off the N2 in the Western Cape and only 15 minutes from Cape Town International Airport. Says Dudley Annenberg, MD of developers, Annenberg Property Group: “In the past six months we have sold a total of 7.5 hectares comprising 18 sites for R65 million in this strategically positioned site, which is the only development in the Western Cape capable of accommodating big box warehousing and large scale manufacturing facilities at a low entry cost – and within a 24-hour security park development.” “During this period we’ve seen a surge of enquiries for land in this security estate with a number of sales pending. Based on the current high interest and level of enquiries we anticipate the entire development will be sold out within the next 12 months. We have sufficient land that can even be consolidated to develop a 30 000sqm footprint or a variety of smaller permutations to suit the requirements of a buyer or tenant.”

And, as Annenberg points out, with the rapid expansion of Sitari Village across the N2, Firgrove is ideally situated for residents who want to locate their business close to home. Sites range in size from 1900sqm upwards starting at R850 per square metre for 3000sqm upwards, to R1050 per square metre for 1900sqm, excluding VAT. With ample power supplied to the estate, it is fully enclosed and secured by fencing with a single entry point and 24/7 manned security, including camera surveillance. Says Annenberg: “Firgrove offers good value for money with excellent upside potential. Sites are competitively priced as serviced industrial land is in short supply in the Western Cape, with land values between R1500 and R2000 per square metre being achieved in areas closer to the city and in close proximity to the N1.” Annenberg Property Group has employed one security company to patrol the entire estate, thereby reducing the need for individual security guards for each property. “This cost saving will benefit all owners in the estate,” says Annenberg.

“We also offer a full turnkey development service to buyers of land. Most companies simply cannot take the time out to deal with managing the development of their new facility and so we take this hassle off their hands by providing a design and construction offering which has resulted in three such developments commencing or about to commence representing a total capital investment of R94 million.” With prominent exposure onto Macassar Road, Firgrove Industrial Estate is situated two minutes from the N2 at the Firgrove / Macassar off-ramp, adjacent to Denel and with commuter rail access close by at Firgrove station. It is 30 minutes to Cape Town CBD and harbour and easily accessible to the N1 and R300, while Somerset West is about eight minutes’ drive and Stellenbosch only 20 minutes away.

“We have also already built a complex comprising six mini-factories which have all been sold on a sectional title basis. As a result of this successful project we have sold further sites to developers who intend to offer more units for sale and to let that will come on stream mid 2018.” “The entire complex is governed by a progressive and modern design guide that sets the standard of finishes which brings uniformity without any added cost. In addition, landscaping will play an important role in setting a high benchmark with all pavement reserves landscaped with water-wise plants which will be maintained by the Property Owners Association staff members.” For more information contact Dudley Annenberg on 021 465 7780 or 083 268 8322 or email dudley@annenberg.co.za visit www.firgroveindustrial.co.za

Young SA Shoe Designer

Timothy Vermeulen Set To Make A Name For Himself

THE NEWSPAPER

World Street Store Day Launched To Celebrate The 700th Street Store

Christian Louboutin once said, “A shoe is not only a design, but it’s a part of your body language, the way you walk. The way you’re going to move is quite dictated by your shoes.” According to up and coming young shoe designer Timothy Vermeulen (26) at Bolton Footwear, it could very easily be his own maxim. Born and raised in Cape Town, Vermeulen followed in his grandparents’ footsteps. Says Vermeulen: “Three of my grandparents worked in the footwear industry, mostly in factories. I studied Surface Design at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and have always gravitated towards designs which required hands-on skills and the ability to create functional 3D forms.” Although Vermeulen is fairly new to the industry, his design experience is growing in leaps and bounds and he is mainly involved in the CAD (Computer Aided Design) department which gets the ball rolling by producing graphic renderings and footwear patterns. As young designer for BRONX men, Vermeulen is very passionate about the brand. “Designed and developed to deliver the toughest shoes for real South African men, Bronx Men are extremely comfortable, durable and have the attitude to match. The ultimate shoe for every occasion in a busy man’s life, this shoe promises to be your best buy ever – and it comes in leather to boot. We’d like to retain these attributes and remain on the forefront of what is currently trending.” Vermeulen believes that a mixture of casual/street wear and sportswear is a must for Spring/Summer. Vermeulen has gained a lot of knowledge in the past three years working at Barker Footwear, a division of Bolton Footwear. He obtained his National Diploma in Surface Design from CPUT in 2013, after which he worked at Southern Cape Regional Footwear for two years. He also spent a year in Italy studying at Ars Sutoria, the leading school for footwear and bag design. This year he had the opportunity to do a course on the introduction to sports footwear manufacturing at Sanming University (SMU) in China. “I believe this is a niche career in a competitive industry. It’s receiving more interest due to increasingly well-informed consumers and footwear’s expressiveness. I think one needs to be passionate and really want to work in this industry to make a success of it,” Vermeulen concludes.

On the 14th of January 2014, M&C Saatchi Abel hosted the first ever Street Store event in Cape Town – a rent-free, premises-free, pop-up clothing ‘store’ for the homeless. The Street Store is stocked with donations from the public and the homeless can enjoy a dignified ‘shopping’ experience for free. “We didn’t want to keep the idea to ourselves, or to leave it as a once-off event, so we went open-source. This means that anybody, anywhere in the world can host a Street Store event in their community,” says Kayli Levitan, Creative Group Head. To date, hundreds of Street Store events have been hosted around the world, clothing an estimated 700,000 homeless people with 1,7 million items of clothing. To celebrate the milestone of reaching the 700th Street Store, M&C Saatchi Abel are launching World Street Store Day on 10 December - a day where people from around the globe are encouraged to host a Street Store event at the same time, creating a more connected future. M&C Saatchi Abel will be hosting an event at the place it all began, outside the Salesian Institute on Somerset Road, Cape Town. “Consider the potential - 1 day when 7 continents, 195 countries and 4416 cities can connect for a good cause just as the festive season begins, a time of giving,” adds Gordon Ray, Executive Creative Director, Founding Partner. After 4 days, one global event has already been listed in Cartersville, Georgia, with 8 more in the pipeline from Mexico to India, South Africa to the UK. The Secret To Happiness: Experiences, Not Things! According to Forbes, “recent research from San Francisco State University found that people who spent money on experiences rather than material items were happier and felt the money was better spent. The thrill of purchasing things fades quickly but the joy and memories of experiences, from epic adventures to minute encounters, can last a lifetime.” It seems ironic, that the festive season of joy tends to create considerably more stress than happiness as everyone runs around buying gifts in crowded malls. Rather than racking up debt in a difficult economy, buying things that you don’t need, take a shift in focus and invest in experiences and opt to create unforgettable memories which last forever. Focusing in and around the coastal town of Gansbaai, known as the natural adventure tourism destination, we’ve put together a list of exciting and off-thebeaten-track type activities from relaxing and lazy to high energy and exhilaration. Gansbaai is well-known for its shark cage diving and whale watching activities, but so much more lies waiting for discovery around this town. Explore ruins in Klipgat Caves left by the first human settlers, as far back as 80 000 years ago. As only one of three locations in the country where such old ruins have been unearthed, this is a very important historical site in the Western Cape and it’s open to the public, so indulge your history sense this December holiday, and travel back in time far, far away.

The sea around Danger Point hides secrets as dark as its deep blue waters and beneath lie 140 wrecks; the most famous of them being the HMS Birkenhead, which struck a rock at 02:00 on the morning of the 26th February 1851 and sank. The Strandveld Museum on the coast of Franskraal is home to a huge number of relics and artefacts from the HMS Birkenhead. As the Gansbaai region only has a population of about 12000, the light pollution is minimal and the dark skies which stretch across the land and sea, makes for the most beautiful star gazing evenings. The Southern Cape Astronomy Club in Pearly Beach regularly hosts stargazing and astronomy evenings. Another bucket-list activity on almost everyone’s list, is the thrill and freedom that comes from horse-riding on a large vast pristine beach. And so, we’ve added that to our list of magical experiences. Rondebosch Riding School in Pearly Beach offers a safe environment for riding instruction for all ages as well as trails in the area. And with the stresses of day-to-day life, the need to ‘get away’ is on everybody’s lips. So while you’re exploring the magic of the Overberg, come chat with us at Romansbaai Beach and Fynbos Estate in Danger Point, about how we can assist you in owning your own piece of this charming small fishing town in the Overberg. Five Stars To Cape Winemakers Guild Auction Reserve Frans K. Smit 2013 The 2018 edition of the authoritative Platter’s Wine Guide has awarded a prestigious and much coveted five stars to Cape Winemakers Guild Auction Reserve Frans K. Smit 2013. Now in its 38th edition, South Africa’s best-selling wine guide reveals the very best the winelands have to offer. In order for a wine to be considered as a five-star champion, the wine had to be rated more than 95 out of 100 by a panel of the country’s most respected wine tasters. About 900 wines were blind-tasted over three days, which makes the five-star achievement yet another honour for Spier’s 300 years of winemaking history and resident cellar master Frans Smit. The Cape Winemakers Guild Frans K. Smit 2013 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (52%) and Merlot (40%), with a touch of Cabernet Franc (8%) playing a supporting role. The blend pays tribute to Smit’s great love of wine, his winemaking skills and dedication to the process. Only 600 bottles of this limited-edition wine were produced exclusively for the 2017 Cape Winemakers Guild Auction, which annually showcases the finest and most exclusive wines produced in small quantities by some of South Africa’s leading winemakers. It’s the fourth time that a red blend bearing Smit’s name has received five stars from Platter’s. “Matured for 4 years before release, this wine has the makings of a long-distance runner,” Smit says. “The mild season allowed the fruit to mature for longer and develop excellent flavour concentration and well-balanced, velvety tannins. It’s thanks to the terroir, really. The fruit all hails from the Stellenbosch Helderberg - by far the best South African terroir for this style of red blend.” Since Smit joined Spier in 1996, the cellar master has harnessed more than three centuries of winemaking history to transform Spier into a major Stellenbosch producer that frequently wins awards both at home and abroad. Most recently, Smit and his team won six Double Golds at the 2017 Veritas Wine Awards where the Spier 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2015 won the inaugural Veritas Vertex Award, beating more than 1600 other entries to be crowned overall champion wine. Get EU residency / 2nd citizenship by buying a property in Cyprus

At the moment there is a growing urgency for many South Africans to want to diversify and invest in offshore property to secure a Plan B; as the property investment offers an insurance against political instability and economic risk.

There are many championship golf courses, traditional wine estates, lush agricultural belts and it is a quick 40 minute drive to the mountains where it snows for 3 months of the year.

Europe is by far still the preferred property investment destination as not only does the EU offer many opportunities, but Europe is also the world’s largest single market & global trading block. In The Med, Cyprus has become even more of a desirable destination due to the incredible lifestyle options on offer and being away from the mainland. Cyprus - an English-speaking, ex-British colony and full member of the EU and Common Wealth – offers property investors the option to secure either permanent residency or a 2nd passport for him/herself and the family. In Cyprus, the permanent residency permits are secured in 4 - 6 weeks of making application and extend to 3 generations in the same family – including dependent children up to age 25 as well as both the parents and parentsin-law. There is no prescription to either buy in Special Designated Areas (SDA’s) or to physically live in the country annually. The investor is allowed to rent out the property to earn a Europe-based income. No other country in Europe offers this, so it is exclusive to Cyprus. Getting a 2nd passport via Cyprus’ ‘Citizenship through investment’ programme is also unique in Europe. Citizenship is granted in 3 months; and all dependent children up to age 28 qualify. Cypriot citizenship gives the investor and his family visa-free access to more than 169 countries in the world; and Photo: Cyprus Passport complete freedom of access to the whole EU – including the UK. The whole family can live, work, study and travel anywhere in Europe with no restrictions.

Cypriot Realty - a proudly South African company in operation for more than 9 years with offices in Cape Town, Sandton and Cyprus – can assist you. We are recognised and respected as Southern Africa’s authoritative offshore investment specialists, promoting Cyprus as an ideal destination for acquiring EU citizenship or permanent residency, property investment, immigration or retirement and starting an EU-based business - we understand investor’s needs. Contact us for a confidential meeting to discuss how we can help you realise your Plan B in Europe.

The appeal Cyprus has as a country is that the lifestyle on offer is very similar to South Africa; but the country is not plagued by any social problems - nor is there a refugee crisis. The country is 1st world with English-speaking universities, international brands & facilities and world-class hospitals, yet the cost of living in Cyprus is a fraction of that in South Africa. The Western side of the island has very similar topography to the Western Cape; and South Africans tend to favour this area over the other provinces.

2300 Low-flow Shower-Heads

Moët & Chandon Officially Open

To Help Save 70 Million Litres of Water A Year

The Festive Season with The Grandest Champagne Tree

Cape Town and the Western Cape’s official Tourism, Trade and Investment Promotion Agency - and the Western Cape Government, in partnership with CapeNature and Airbnb, will distribute 2 300 low-flow shower heads that save both water (by 70%) and electricity (by 30%) to guesthouses, B&B’s and Airbnb hosts across the province. It is estimated that this contribution will help save at least 70 million litres of water a year. This forms part of their campaign to help tourists and small accommodation establishments make a measurable difference in the midst of the worst drought in recorded history by helping save water directly. The campaign will also include the distribution of mirror decals that will be used in these tourism establishment bathrooms, ensuring that tourists are provided with information on how they can save water in the very location where the behaviour change is needed most. Wesgro and the Western Cape Government are extremely grateful for the goodwill and partnership demonstrated by CapeNature and Airbnb, who are both supporting this campaign. Airbnb has agreed to come on as partners and distribute approximately 500 shower heads to their top hosts. CapeNature has also contributed to the campaign. Minister Winde said the campaign was part of the Western Cape’s peak season drive to share the water savings message with tourists. At the start of December, the Western Cape Government, local municipalities and tourism officers will host awareness events along the N2, N1 and N7. There will also be knock-and-drops to petrol stations and guest houses across the province. The province’s tourist guides will also spread the message as well as a radio campaign to raise awareness among local businesses. He added that the Western Cape Government was completing case studies of best practice on water-savings in each sector, to share with businesses.

As the much-celebrated countdown to 25 December begins, the Mother City has been treated to the city’s grandest Champagne Tree. Made entirely from recycled Moët & Chandon champagne bottles, this interactive tree officially puts Cape Town on the festive map! Set against the backdrop of the magnificent new Silo district at the V&A Waterfront, the impressive 10-meter tree will be made from over 1, 500 recycled Moët & Chandon champagne bottles collected from all over the country in the threemonths leading up to 7 December 2017. The Champagne Tree will be topped with a signature one meter spinning gold Moët & Chandon crown and decorated with more than 15,300 LED lights, in 26 concentric rows. In another first for South Africa, visitors will be able to send messages to friends and family! All messages will appear as scrolling notes on a magnificent light ribbon wrapped around the tree. Tweets and Instagram captions which include the hashtag #moetmomentcapetown will show in real-time and, in true festive spirit, everyone is invited to participate in this celebratory display. And, to add to the excitement, when visitors engage on social media using the #moetmomentcapetown followed by the popping champagne bottle emoji the Moët & Chandon crown at the top of the tree will spin! Everyone is invited to join in the festivities and tweet, with messages displayed on the tree for the duration of the installation from 7th December 2017 to 3rd January 2018.

Wesgro CEO, Tim Harris said: “Cape Town and the Western Cape now faces a “new normal” and water scarcity is going to be a long-term problem. We therefore realised that a long term solution was also needed. These shower heads will go a small, but measurable way, in contributing to the province’s water saving efforts.” “Tourism is essential to the Western Cape economy. According to our calculations, international tourists only add 1% to the Western Cape population of the summer peak season, but contributed over R38 billion to the Cape economy in 2016, supporting 319 227 jobs. Tourism is an important contributor to economic growth and job creation, at a time when the drought may hurt key sectors. Wesgro is therefore saying to tourists: come to our beautiful province, but please save water. We hope this campaign will help make this easier.”

The recycled bottles which make up the tree are illuminated to give them an ethereal quality. The installation is being created by Studio.H based in Cape Town, inspired by the festive spirit to create a celebratory and inclusive structure to act as a focal point of celebrations. As the grandest Champagne Tree in the city, it’s no doubt going to become a much-visited site in the lead up to the festive season. The glamorous tree, which is both merry and eco-friendly, is the epitome of holiday spirit. With its energetic display, the tree embodies the warmth, generosity and grandeur of the season. The magical Champagne Tree will be positioned in the heart of the new Silo District between the water and the historic Grain Silo, in close proximity to the celebrated new Silo Hotel. The area has become a creative-hub and must-visit for locals and tourists alike and is home to the internationally acclaimed Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA).

Hot Summer of Touch Rugby

The Secrets Of Baboons’ Raiding Tactics

Score, one of South Africa’s most popular energy drinks and supporter of grassroots sport development including touch rugby in the Western Cape, will be a proud flag bearer at the Hot Summer of Touch series during December. The 17th Hot

Scientists from the University of Cape Town are part of an international team who have revealed how canny baboons in Cape Town, use a sit-and-wait tactic before raiding people’s homes in search of food. “Raiding baboons are a real challenge in the Cape Peninsula, South Africa. The baboons enter properties to raid in gardens and bins, but also enter homes and sometimes take food directly from people”, said Professor Justin O’Riain, Director of the Institute for Communities and Wildlife in Africa at the University of Cape Town, and co-author on the study published by Scientific Reports. In a previous study, the team showed that whilst Cape Town’s baboon management strategy was keeping baboons away from the urban space, some males were still finding ways in. The team therefore built bespoke baboon tracking collars allowing them to track the movements and activity levels of 10 males via GPS and accelerometer sensors.

Summer of Touch series held on the beaches of the Western and Southern Cape coast, consists of eight tournaments kicking off in Camps Bay on 9 December and ending on Diaz Beach in Mossel Bay on 30 December. With over 400 teams taking part in the series, this is a highlight on the holiday calendar. As the sponsor of four Score Living Legends teams entered each year for the Hot Summer of Touch beach circuit, the energy drink brand helps this Stellenbosch based youth development organisation to double their power in surrounding communities, changing lives through sport. The Score Living Legends Junior, Open, Ladies and Professional (Pro) teams are all regular participants in the Hot Summer of Touch. Living Legends has identified a passion for touch rugby in the Helderberg area and together with Caylix Sport, offers youth between the ages of 10 -24 constructive activities, a sense of belonging and hope for the future. With Score’s support, the interest in touch rugby has grown substantially and the touch rugby culture is now well established in all the areas where Living Legends have a foothold. By supporting Living Legends, Score Energy helps the non-profit organisation untap the potential of young people in the greater Stellenbosch community through the development of sport and life skills. In the spirit of paving it forward, the Score Living Legends Pro team, victors of the Hot Summer of Touch series for the past four years, will be hosting a rugby clinic in Klein Brak Rivier on 27 December 2018. Inspired by their enthusiastic fan base, the Pro team players have become role models for children in their area and the touch rugby community in the Western Cape as a whole. For more information visit www.drinkscore.co.za

Dr Gaëlle Fehlmann, lead author of the study, said: “People assume the baboons don’t have enough food in their natural habitats and therefore have no choice but to forage in town. In fact, our research shows there is plenty of food in the natural environment where there is very little risk of the baboons being disturbed by anyone. In contrast, the chances of human-baboon conflicts in urban areas are high, but so are the food rewards, which are 10 times richer in terms of calories”. The collar data revealed that male baboons were staying at the city edge, engaging in short but intense forays to the urban environment when opportunity presented itself, similar to a sit-and-wait strategy.

The data shows that as a consequence of their raiding tactics, the baboons only foraged for about 10% of the time, which is considerably less than the non-raiding baboons in the Cape Peninsula or elsewhere on the African continent which spend at least half of their time foraging. Dr Fehlmann added: “Our results present unequivocal evidence of extreme behavioural flexibility in these baboons. Behavioural flexibility has long been considered a central component of a species ability to cope with human-induced environmental changes, but has been difficult or impossible to quantify in wild animal populations. The new tracking technologies employed by the researchers are changing this”. Now that researchers have uncovered the raiding tactics of these canny baboons, strategies will be refined to further improve Cape Town’s already successful baboon management programme.

Calling All Superheroes It’s Almost Time For Twilight Run

On Tuesday, 5 December 2017 Cape Town will come alive as thousands of superheroes take to the streets to participate in the Community Chest’s 35th annual Twilight Run. Toiling through the city’s streets and risking blisters, cramps and stubbed toes for charity is a heroic undertaking. Therefore attendees are encouraged to dress according to this year’s theme – ‘be the superhero in your community’. All profits from the day will be donated to charities that operate in the Community Chest’s key focus areas including education, health, income generation and community development. The iconic run/walk weaves along Long, Adderley and Strand streets, through the Company’s Garden, to finish at the Grand Parade. Well-known local acts including Devon Saunders, The Unknown Dance Crew, Steven Lee Lewis and Dr Jules, will provide the festive vibes and food vendors will provide delicious meals and refreshments along the route and at the festival grounds. Hello summer - The Galileo Open Air Cinema returns

Cape Town’s summer staple and much-loved outdoor movie experience, The Galileo Open Air Cinema, is back! Offering visitors popular films screened under the stars at venues across Cape Town and the Winelands, The Galileo offers an excellent evening out for film buffs and outdoor enthusiasts alike. The well-known event will run until the end of April 2018, will showcase a series of silver-screen classics as well as a variety of old time favourites, such as Braveheart at Bloemendal Wine Estate, Bridesmaids at Kirstenbosch Gardens, and Beauty and The Beast at The Castle of Good Hope.

Carols by Candlelight 2017 Helderberg Hospice invites you to enjoy an evening of Carol Singing and a Christmas pageant at the beautiful Vergelegen Estate on Wednesday 13, December 2017. The gates in Lourensford Rd open at 17h00, so bring your picnic baskets, chairs or blankets, and your family and friends to enjoy a picnic supper before the Carol Service starts at 19h30.

Running Tuesday to Friday and on selected Saturdays and Sundays, The Galileo offers the perfect setting for a memorable evening with friends, a ridiculously romantic date, a birthday bash or an outing with the whole family - kids, grannies, grandpas, everyone is welcome. Doors open at 6pm on weekdays, 5pm on Saturdays and 4pm on Sundays and the movie starts as soon as it’s dark. Arrive early, find your spot on the lawn and enjoy an evening of artisanal food and drinks, games, lively music and an overall great vibe. The Galileo has added tasty picnic packs to their offering this year. Order in advance and collect your pack when you check-in. Popular venues Kirstenbosch Gardens and the V&A Waterfront remain as weeknight hosts, with new spot on the block Bloemendal Wine Estate in Durbanville taking up the Tuesday night slot. Friday nights work on rotation – moving between Meerendal Wine Estate, Fedisa Rooftop, Central Park in Century City, The Castle of Good Hope and The Alphen Boutique Hotel. If getting out of the city (with a glass of vino in hand) sounds appealing, you can catch Saturday screenings at select wine estates in Paarl, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Somerset West. You’re spoilt for choice this year – we recommend that you visit them all. For more information visit www.thegalileo.co.za

Disabled parking is available by prior arrangement with Helderberg Hospice. Remember to bring warm clothing, a torch (to find your way back to your car afterwards) and your singing voice. Candles and holders will be provided by Helderberg Hospice. Booking available at Computicket
