A team of nature-loving South Africans in partnership with Google Street View have released a large collection of 360degree imagery of the country’s wildest areas.

The announcement of 170 new trails in South Africa’s national parks and reserves follows on from The Mzansi Experience launched in March 2016, which showcased prominent tourist attractions such as Kruger National Park, Table Mountain and Cape Point amongst others.

Miss Universe 2017 Winner Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters

Miss South Africa 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters has been crowned Miss Universe, becoming the first Miss South Africa to take this prestigious title since Margaret Gardiner won in 1978.

At the pageant, held in Las Vegas in the US, an ecstatic Demi-Leigh competed against 91 contestants from around the globe – the biggest number of entrants in the history of the competition – and justified the faith thousands of South Africans had that she would win. Runners-up were Miss Colombia (first princess) and Miss Jamaica (second princess).

The new trails extend the existing Street View imagery of South Africa’s wilderness areas to include all 19 national parks, 17 previously ‘un-trekked’ nature reserves and many sites of natural, cultural and historical significance in all nine provinces of South Africa.

The 22-year-old from Sedgefield in the Western Cape was one of the hot favourites going into the pageant and received huge support from around the world on social media. In the end, the Top 16 comprised four entrants from Asia Pacific and Africa; four from Europe; four from the Americas and four wild cards voted for by the judges.

Stellenbosch Brewing Company Scoops Top Award Fresh from taking top honours at the recent South African National Beer Trophy Competition for its Hoenderhok Bock, Stellenbosch Brewing Company scooped the big prize at the Cape Town Festival of Beer. Not only did the small brewery win the Best Dark Beer award for its Eike Stout, the beer also secured the Best Beer in Show trophy making it two from two.

Says an elated Bruce Collins, master brewer of the Stellenbosch Brewing Company: “We are over the moon! It has never happened before that the same brewer and brewery has won the South African National Beer Trophy and the Best of Show at the CTFOB ever, never mind in the same year. They are calling it the Grand Slam of Beer.”

The Cape Town Festival of Beer is considered the highlight of the South African beer festival calendar, with 45 of the province’s top breweries showcasing over 230 different beers, from the seasoned varieties to the more unique creations brewed exclusively for the event.

The Stellenbosch Brewing Company officially opened its doors in late 2015, but its story started much earlier. On their many travel adventures, Collins, and his wife often found themselves sampling beers from around the world. They were intrigued by the art of brewing and developing great tasting beer. After one such trip, they got involved in a friend’s brew in a basement in Karen’s native Minnesota, USA, which got them hooked on brewing interesting and flavourful beers and they spent the next six years reading, learning, researching and trying (and tasting) many different beer recipes.

“When Karen and I decided it was time to settle down, there was only one place for us, Stellenbosch. And there was only one thing I wanted to do and that was brew beer,” says Collins.

“We focus on brewing beers utilizing fresh and natural ingredients which respect the heritage of traditional styles yet we creatively brew them to suit our South African taste buds, modern lifestyles, diverse cultures, beautiful landscapes and unbeatable climate.”

To Film New Series ‘Warrior’ in Cape Town

Driving Force behind Madiba1 Ferry

Wesgro, Cape Town and the Western Cape’s official Tourism, Trade and Investment Promotion Agency, welcomes the decision by CINEMAX to order the production of Season One of a new 10-part episodic series called ‘Warrior’.

Johan van Heerden, entrepreneur and business man is the driving force behind the conceptualization of numerous development strategies across various fields, and the man behind Madiba1.

The series, inspired by an original idea from the writings of legendary martial artist Bruce Lee, is set against the backdrop of San Francisco’s Chinatown in the aftermath of the Civil War and tells the story of a martial arts prodigy who finds himself caught up in the bloody Tong wars.

Nine years down the line the CEO and founder of the company called Meltt is realizing his dream of running the Robben Island ferry route. “Having been held back by competitors, the beautiful Madiba1 is heading the runs as the best and only registered, completely safe and technically compliant ferry vessel in Cape waters.”

This decision by CINEMAX, reaffirms their recognition of Cape Town as a desirable filming location, with Warrior being the latest high-profile project to be shot in the city, following on from other such projects like ‘Invictus’, ‘Blood Diamond’ and ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’. The production and filming of Warrior in Cape Town will provide a huge boost for the industry and the local economy as it is a large budget production. The production will result in an estimated 250 local crew jobs, with an additional 6500 person-days of extras or stunts. The production will take place over a period of 21 weeks – all of which will take place in South Africa.

She does not bob up and down on waves as many other vessels do, which causes sea sickness!

With foam-filled hulls, Madiba1 has superior buoyancy. Life rafts capable of carrying 245 passengers as well as 250 life jackets means that at the full capacity of 200 passengers and 13 crew, the Madiba1 can carry all passengers to safety should this be required.

With its three navigation systems exact navigation is possible in any sort of weather. The seating areas are contained within water tight compartments and – whilst at sea – no water can enter into the vessel at any stage.

Usually loosely bundled with general places of interest and tourism attraction, heritage sites and destinations mostly do not receive the elevated recognition as heritage destinations they deserve.

Young environmental game-changes from the University of Cape Town (UCT) took first place in the Greenovate Awards for the third year running. UCT scooped up the very first Greenovate Engineering Award too. The awards programme is an exciting initiative by Growthpoint Properties in association with the Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA). The prestigious awards recognise innovative solutions for the property industry to environmental challenges.

Bluewater purifying technologies started business operations in South Africa during December as the launch pad for a full rollout throughout Africa. Bluewater operated four unique water stations during the Volvo Ocean Race visit to Cape Town during December, that are designed to create pure drinking water from non-potable water as well as slash the need for singleuse plastic bottles.

This is the third year the awards have strived to inspire and encourage students of the building environment to discover, explore and invent ways to live more sustainably. Also, for the first time this year, the awards were extended to include a second category for engineering students. The students were challenged to come up with ideas for any property-related project that makes the way we live greener and our environmental footprint lighter.

“The decision to launch the Bluewater brand in South Africa reflects our understanding of the market and our strong commitment to providing marketing leading residential, light commercial and public dispenser water purification delivery solutions to South Africa and Africa as a whole,” says Anders Jacobson, Co-founder and CEO of Blue AB, the holding company that owns Bluewater.

He said that Bluewater can help transform clean drinking water production, delivery and availability across Africa by tackling the issues critical to ensuring Africans everywhere can access pristine water to drink and use.

Anders said that in a world where the United Nations says almost two billion people by 2025 will be living in areas ‘with absolute water scarcity’, Bluewater intends to provide clean drinking water access to everyone, while also disrupting the beverage industry that sees billions of single-use plastic bottles being used that ultimately end up in land fill or polluting our oceans and, subsequently, the human body.

“While the debate about plastics and pollution rages on, at Bluewater we have harnessed our human ingenuity to find here-and-now solutions to simultaneously providing clean drinking water and ending the plastics plague,” said Anders. Anders notes that Bluewater’s water purification platform is a way for consumers, business and municipal authorities in South Africa and elsewhere across the continent to address the crisis of providing access to clean water to people everywhere. Bluewater water purifiers have the ability to produce thousands of liters of clean water every day at a local level, providing pristine water to hundreds of millions of people across the continent from bore wells, polluted tracts of river and industrial scale desalination plants.

“Our mission in a world where clean, safe drinking water is a growing challenge and scarce commodity is to create both value and sustainable water for South Africa based on our technologies,” said Anders. “What better place to start in Africa than Cape Town, where we already now are demonstrating how to turn non-potable water into pristine drinking water for hundreds of thousands of people in the V&A Waterfront without using scarce municipal water.”

A total of eight universities competed for both awards this year. UCT was the only one to take up the challenge in both award streams. Groups from each of the participating universities competed internally first, and the two top projects from each were chosen as finalists. This year the awards adjudicated a record 16 finalist teams. The winners were announced at a gala dinner in Sandton Central with keynote speaker, serial tech entrepreneur Stafford Masie, who said: “...as much as it is about technology, it’s more so about humanity. Sustainability of any idea or innovation is collectively harnessing latent human capital, augmented with AI, to coagulate around your business from the outside.”

“We need to establish ecosystems versus just building cool stuff or even just cool businesses...co-creativity is the absolute substrate of continuous leading innovation. The UCT team of Mark McCormick, Daniel Navarro and Nicholas Tennick were named the winners of the Greenovate Awards 2017. Their submission was titled “upgrading existing medium-density residential buildings with strategic green building features and initiatives holds the key to increasing affordable housing in Cape Town.” .This team of outstanding young green innovators took home R30,000 in prize money, as well numerous other rewards.

UCT also took second place, with team members Tarryn Coles, Anthony Testa and Gemma Watson investigating the viability of using self-sustaining shipping container homes as an affordable and sustainable approach to student housing.

Joon Airline To Fly From

Paris to Cape Town Three Times A Week From 1 April 2018 Cape Town Air Access, a partnership between Wesgro, the Western Cape Government, the City of Cape Town, Airports Company South Africa, South African Tourism, and Cape Town Tourism, welcomes the announcement by the airline ‘Joon’ that it will be flying direct flight from Paris to Cape Town next year. The airline, which is part of Air France, has been designed to meet the expectations of younger travellers in particular.

This new service will replace the current Air France service offering, and will fly from Paris to Cape Town three times a week, as of 1st April 2018. Cape Town International Airport is emerging as a key regional airline hub, on the back of Cape Town and the Western Cape’s continued popularity for both business and leisure tourism.

There has been a notable increase in arrivals from France over the last few years. Between 2016 and 2017, arrivals increased by 35%, from 55 029 to 74 278.

The top ranking source cities for arrivals from France are Paris, Nice, Lyon and Marseille, all of which have had double-digit growth between 2016 and 2017.

Joep Stevens, South African National Parks General Manager Strategic Tourism Services states that an effort to align Table Mountain National Park fees with the rest of SANParks where differential fees were implemented as early as 2003, will be implemented in November 2018.

“At the time the differential system was implemented, a benchmarking exercise was embarked upon comparing our conservation fees to those of reputable national parks locally, across Africa, and globally with rates that were set accordingly,” continues Stevens.

Wesgro CEO, Tim Harris said: “This is not only good for our tourism industry, but also for business. Indeed, according to South African Tourism, 41% of travellers from France to Cape Town visit for leisure, and another 39% for business. This is precisely why Cape Town Air Access is so important for economic growth and job creation in the Cape. By making it easier for more people to visit our beautiful city and province, we will increase tourism, trade and investment, and most importantly, boost job creation.”

The reason that differential Conservation Fees were not implemented in 2003 was due to the complexity of processing visitors at the two key access points, namely Cape Point and Boulders.

The process required visitors to provide proof or residence and/or nationality and given these are high volume access points, it would delay access.

A new system is being sourced for these access points with the emphasis on reducing processing at the gates.

Guests and operators will be able to capture permit details online before arrival and certain validation would take place for payment to be made before arrival.

This means as of 1 November 2018 the standard conservation fees will be as follow: Cape Point - R300 (€19 or $21) for international adults, R150 for SADC nationals and R75 for SA Residents, while the fees for Boulders will be R150 (€9-50 or $11) for international adults, R75 for SADC nationals, and R38 for SA Residents.

Besides the new access system currently being sourced, there are upgrades taking place at both facilities and SANParks believes that these two iconic destinations offer excellent value for money.

“We further aim to increase accessibility to South Africans, especially the sectors of society that do not traditionally visit national parks, ” Stevens concludes.

MUSSELS WITH WHITE WINE, LEEKS, LEMON & CREAM A WORTHY ACCOMPANIMENT TO THE AWARD-WINNING 21 GABLES CHENIN BLANC

Nothing beats the distinctive flavour of fresh black mussels, straight from the beautiful West Coast. Don’t overcook them – they just need a few minutes of hot steam in your pot of wine and leeks. Some lemon rind adds a nice zesty touch. Serve hot with crusty bread to mop up the sauce.

This recipe serves four to six people.

Prep and cooking time is 30min.

Ingredients:

• 30 ml olive oil • 30 ml butter • One small bunch of leeks, finely chopped (white parts only) • 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped • Half a bottle white wine (Chenin works well) • 1.5 – 2kg fresh black mussels, cleaned • 125 ml fresh cream • Rind of a lemon, finely grated • Salt and pepper to taste • Chopped fresh herbs, to serve (parsley & dill work well) Method:

To clean the fresh mussels, rinse them under cold tap water. Scrub the outsides if they are a little “hairy”, then pull off the grassy “beard” from the pointy side to the round side. They are now ready for the pot. Any mussels that won’t close before cooking must be discarded. And any mussels that won’t open after cooking, should also be tossed.

In a wide heavy-based pot or casserole, heat the oil and butter over medium heat.

Fry the leeks and garlic until soft and translucent, but not too brown. Add the wine, turn up the heat and bring to a boil.

Add the mussels all at once and cover with a lid. Bring to a boil again and steam for 5-8 minutes until they are open and justcooked. Add the cream and heat through, then take off the heat and add the lemon rind. Season to taste with salt and pepper (some mussels can be very salty already, so be careful).

Serve scattered with chopped herbs, with a glass of Spier 21 Gables Chenin Blanc.

Spier’s commitment to conserving water dates back to long before the Western Cape’s current drought.

IN 2007, WE SET THE GOAL OF HALVING OUR MUNICIPAL WATER CONSUMPTION. Ever since then, we’ve constantly been searching for ways to improve efficiency and consumption.

100% of our black and grey wastewater is recycled by our own eco-friendly treatment plant. Installed a decade ago, it can process up to one million litres at any given time and produces 50 million litres of clean water annually. It would take a river 350km to purify what the wastewater treatment plant cleans in one day. The water is used for flushing in the estate’s busiest washrooms and to irrigate our gardens and lawns.

We have also installed 400 water-saving devices on showers, basins and toilets in our 153-room hotel, conference centre, restaurants and other public spaces.

As part of the FEDHASA Cape Waterwise Pledge, Spier Resort Management has committed to reducing our water usage and consumption by 40% over the period of one year, ending on 12/10/2018.

STEP INSIDE THE SPIER NURSERY HOW WE’RE BOOSTING OUR FARM’S BIODIVERSITY

Planting team - from left: Vuyolwethu Juta, Bulelani Keyizana, Abongile Xandi, Sam Moloi, Wilton Sikhosana, Sithembile Ntyato and Kwanele Nzwana Over one million bulbs, 87 000 trees and shrubs and 6 000 succulents have been propagated and re-planted across Spier’s 620ha since our nursery was established in 2007. The re-planting has attracted a wealth of bird and animal life back into the area.

The conservation and rehabilitation of Spier’s natural heritage saw it becoming one of 38 farms in the Western Cape to carry the WWF-SA Conservation Champion label on its wines.

The Cape is home to the world’s smallest but most diverse floral kingdom. Of the 9 500 different plant species found here, 70% of these occur nowhere else, making it all the more important that the sensitive ecosystems in which they’re found are protected.

Wilton Sikhosana, Spier’s nursery manager for almost a decade, grew up in northern KwaZulu-Natal. When he was a child, his grandfather – a traditional healer – sent him to collect medicinal plants in the veld.

Wilton first began flexing his green fingers when he started growing some of these varieties close to home – so he wouldn’t have to walk so far to retrieve them.

Almost 180 different indigenous species are growing in the Spier nursery. Wilton and his team collect cuttings and seeds at Spier farm and nearby. Cuttings are nurtured in the cuttings tunnel while in the germinating tunnel, seeds are propagated in trays.

There are 10 000 plants growing there.

Outside, three different soil mixes are created, using varying quantities of bark, sand and compost. The compost is made on the farm, using wood chips, grape pips and nutrient-rich organic waste. The mixed soil is placed in bags where the seedlings can be planted. The seedlings are then placed in one of two greenhouses. Containing a total of 30,000 plants, both have 50% shade cover to protect the plants from too much sun while they’re young. Once the plants are big enough, they’re placed outside for a few months for hardening.

Wilton studies the ecology of each plant species that he propagates, so he knows which plants should grow where. Spier farm has a variety of different habitats – including its river network and wetlands where bulbs are planted. On sandy, drier patches a variety of fynbos species and trees are planted.

There are many areas across Spier where thirsty alien vegetation has been cleared so that water-wise indigenous species can be planted in their place.

The newly-planted “nature strips” create diversity surrounding the vineyards and pastures. Combined with the pre-existing patches of endangered vegetation, these protected zones will ultimately form one continuous conservation corridor across the farm. This will minimise the potential localised extinction of species and ensure that the maximum biological diversity is conserved.

“Technically zero is not about achieving zero waste to landfill as much as it is a holistic approach that aims for a change in the way materials flow through our business,” Heidi says. “Our commitment to the final couple of percent means that we are consistently evaluating our purchasing decisions as new items are brought into the stream all the time.”

“CHANGING PERCEPTIONS AROUND WASTE IS CRITICAL TO FIND LONG-TERM SOLUTIONS,” says Heidi Newton-King, Spier’s Director of Sustainability.“Each section of our business sorts its waste individually, with waste storage and categories differing before it’s taken to the farm’s sorting facility and sorted a second time to make absolutely sure the waste can’t be recycled and to help us identify any new non-recyclable items in the waste stream.”

With recycling bins helpfully located throughout the farm, we encourage our visitors to help us on our journey towards zero waste.

StreetSmart SA, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the social integration and upliftment of street children, has launched in Oudtshoorn and is rallying restaurants and hospitality establishments to become involved in helping to rebuild the lives of the town’s children at risk.

“We are happy to provide a tourist attraction that caters for all.” The Adventure Pirate Golf course will be open to the public in January 2018, this will allow for competitive fun that offers plenty of thrills and laughs to just about anyone and everyone.

The St Francis Drop-In Centre, providing daily services to street children, has received R25,000 raised through local StreetSmart partners to boost local community upliftment. The StreetSmart funds were handed over at an event held at Karusa Wine Estate.

The donation is part of an allocation of over R1 million awarded nationally for the fourth consecutive year by StreetSmart SA, an organisation dedicated to helping vulnerable children rebuild their lives, through donations from partner establishments in the Western Cape, Garden Route, Gauteng and KZN. Establishments in Oudtshoorn are now part of a network of restaurants, accommodation venues and wine cellars running this worthy initiative in the southern cape along with George, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. Nationally Cape Town, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Somerset West, Wellington, Worcester, Swellendam, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban are all doing their part.

Since 2013, the St Francis Drop-In, affiliated with FAMSA Karoo, runs youth development programmes in Oudtshoorn that form part of a holistic approach to assist children between the ages of 7-8 years. Their mission is to protect children against all forms of abuse and neglect through accessible services focusing on all levels of protection. The StreetSmart donation will go towards the Drop-In children’s activity programmes.

There are currently three restaurants in Oudtshoorn, the Restaurant @ Karusa Wine Estate, Restaurant @ Boulders Lodge & Spa and the Turnberry Restaurant, that have embraced StreetSmart’s vision to make a real difference to the lives of street children or children at risk of living on the streets. Funds are raised by adding a R5 donation to each patron’s bill. This donation is voluntary and donors are able to contribute more if they wish to.

StreetSmart partner establishments and their guests are generously contributing to making a difference in the lives of vulnerable street children in their local communities. Nationally this partnership has raised R1,120,000.00 during 2017.

StreetSmart SA was set up in 2005 by a group of concerned Capetonians under the patronage of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and comprises resourceful board members representing business and the hospitality and tourism industries.

Franschhoek Motor Museum - Motoring Heaven

The Franschhoek Motor Museum, which features a distinctive collection of more than 220 unique vehicles, is located on the L’Ormarins wine estate on the R45 in Franschhoek. Opened in 2007, the museum has become a popular attraction not only as an outlet for pure motoring fanatics, but also for tourists visiting the region.

The vehicles, of which all are in pristine condition despite their age, are kept in four de-humidified halls which are arranged in chronological order. Some of the vintage cars in the collection hold significance as their production dates back to more than 100 years ago, while more recent models feature simply by being exotic or rare. The museum is home to some of the world’s rarest cars including models from Ferrari, McLaren, Bugatti and Maserati.

It tells the story of how the car evolved through the ages and is abundantly rich in motoring history. An important piece of South African history is also portrayed by the exhibition of the exact bulletproof BMW 7-series car used by Nelson Mandela during promotion of his 46664 HIV/Aids campaign. Vintage motorcycles and bicycles are also on display.

A lower cost of living and more affordable property prices is a big boost for country-side property markets that is generally keeping most towns top of mind for local buyers, but also many buyers who are migrating from the big urban areas to the Cape country-side, says Ian Badenhorst, MD for Seeff Country. He said that the desire for a more secure lifestyle and a better quality of life is a big driver of the demand for country property.

With tougher economic conditions and high debt burdens, many consumers are turning to alternative income sources to supplement their income over the holiday season. Some homeowners, particularly those who have second homes or are going away, are turning to short-term rentals, such as Airbnb, as a form of additional revenue to help line their pockets.

There is almost no traffic, even in the bigger towns of the Overberg and you can find excellent facilities including good schools, medical care and hospitals and shopping centres across most towns. The local municipal services are generally excellent with these towns often voted as some of the best to live in. You also have good access to bigger centres which are mostly reachable within 1-2 hour’s drive. Take a town such as Swellendam in the Overberg for example.

While there is no doubt that the rise short-term rental online platforms can be considered one of the biggest disruptors of the rental space and a positive boost to our ailing economy, Vera Nagtegaal, Executive Head of Hippo.co.za, cautions homeowners to be aware of the various regulations and bylaws governing the rental sector.

“Short-term rentals are a fantastic way for homeowners to earn a little more spending money. But, for any homeowner who is considering renting out their home, it is important that they are aware of the regulations, insurance implications and security risks involved.”

Realising the growth opportunity that comes with Airbnb, The City of Cape Town signed an agreement with the company in October this year in order to promote the benefits of people-to-people tourism for Cape Town residents and their communities and promote Cape Town across the world as a unique travel destination.

It is located just over two hours’ drive from Cape Town and George and is a gateway to the Garden Route and a popular stop-over for trips to the Overberg, Garden Route and Eastern Cape. With the beautiful Langeberg Mountains as a backdrop and rolling farmlands all around, the scenic location epitomises the attraction of the Cape country-side.

With reduced security, travel and living costs and lower property prices, people can settle here and have a much better quality of life. You also have access to local fresh food and meat. There is no major commercialisation or industries, the air is clean and the climate excellent and well-suited to family and retirement living.

Swellendam is the third oldest settlement in the country with a fabulous history and rich heritage of historic buildings. Since the Dutch East India Company settled in the Cape in 1652, it had been trading as far inland as Swellendam and by 1745 settled in Swellendam, named after Governor Hendrik Swellengrebel and his wife, Helena ten Damme. The town has been declared and independent ‘republic’ on two occasions, first in October 1795, and more recently in 2011.

With plentiful water resources, the area is very fertile and boasts a bustling agricultural sector. It is the largest grower of youngberries in the world. Other agricultural products include fruit, dairy, sheep and grain farming and the area is also popular for equestrian pursuits.

There is also a busy tourism industry with many sought-after guest houses and popular historic attractions such as the Drostdy Museum which dates to 1747. Facilities in the town includes a hospital, primary and high schools, a shopping centre along with an Superspar, OK Grocery store, the well-known Bukkenburg Pottery Studio, Rain Health Spa and Retail shop, and the Faerie Sanctuary.

According to Airbnb’s ‘Overview of the Airbnb community in South Africa’ report, approximately R817 million was earned by local households and more than R2.4 billion in total economic activity was generated between Airbnb hosts and guest spending in the country in 2016. In Cape Town alone, there are 17 600 active listings on the short-term rental website and hosts have earned a combined income of R762 million over the past 12 months.

Nagtegaal points out that in interviews post the City’s announcement encouraging tourists to make use of shortterm rentals, Counsellor Brett Herron warned that homeowners should be mindful of the municipal planning by-laws, which indicate a block of flats cannot be used for holiday accommodation or hotel purposes.

Any owner wishing to do short-term holiday letting from a block of flats, irrespective of the platform facilitating such letting - such as Airbnb or otherwise - must ensure the property is appropriately zoned and must apply for consent from the city’s development Photo: Vera Nagtegaal management department.

“In letting out your home, this also has an impact on your insurance cover,” explains Nagtegaal. “Should the home be used for commercial purposes, an insurance claim can run the risk of being repudiated if inadequate cover or the incorrect type of cover is in place.”

The new Rotary Park Retirement Village is another highlight as it has a frail care and is in great demand. Just outside the town, is the popular Kam’Bati River Resort on the banks of the Breede River. Swellendam also offers access to several nature reserves including the Bontebok National Park and the Marloth Nature Reserve, both of which offer good hiking trails.

Nagtegaal says it is extremely important that homeowners also understand the different types of cover available to protect against theft, damage and any other possible claims that can be made.

For golf lovers, there is the 9-hole Swellendam Golf Course that offers stunning views.

Horse lovers can find two trails that will take you through the beautiful mountain ranges and cater for all levels of experience.

She explains that as the home is technically being used for commercial gain this has an impact on the type of cover homeowners should have in place, which could also include public liability cover.

Road and Time Trial Championships 2018

Varsity Cup and Varsity Shield will introduce a new Power Play rule to the tournament in 2018 which will encourage coaches to employ exciting, attacking tactics while fostering a generation of dynamic and adjustable rugby players.

The team calling the Power Play may remove any two nominated backline players from the opposition for a period of three minutes of playing time. The Power Play can only be called by a team while in their own half, must be called by the captain, and can only be called once. If the team whose players have been removed score a try during the Power Play period, they are awarded an extra two points (seven points before the conversion).

The first priority of the Varsity Cup Board, when it comes to rule changes, will always be to encourage attacking rugby, which this rule will lend itself to.

“Yellow and red cards are such integral aspects of rugby, yet players and coaches worldwide struggle to deal with the change in personnel,” said Duitser Bosman, CEO of Varsity Cup and Varsity Shield.

“This innovative new rule will foster a generation of rugby players who will be able to defend with less teammates on the field and will know how to fully utilise a numerical advantage.”

This Power Play rule will allow tactically strong coaches to employ robust new strategies. University of Western Cape (UWC) coach and 1995 Rugby World Cup winning winger Chester Williams believes the Power Play rule will bring an exciting new edge to the competition.

“The new rule will be good for players, coaches and, most of all, spectators going into next year’s competition, as it keeps the game fresh. Power Play will really keep the game fluid and allow for some innovative thinking from the coaches.”

“It will be tactically and strategically challenging for all of the coaches, and will be interesting to see how other coaches react.”

Varsity Cup will kick off on the 29 January 2018 when title-holders FNB University of Pretoria take on FNB University of Free State at Tuks Stadium. The Varsity Shield will begin on 19 February 2018. The Varsity Cup will conclude on Monday, 16 April 2018.

Western Cape Cycling will host the 2018 SA National Road and Time Trial Championships taking place in Oudtshoorn from 6-11 February 2018. The Eden Cycling region will organize the event on behalf of the Western Cape.

Oudtshoorn Municipality is one of Eden Cycling’s partners in hosting the 2018 SA National Road and Time Trial Championships and will support the event financially as well as with infrastructure required for the event. All routes will start and finish in Voortrekker Road with different distances for the age categories, with the start in the direction of Volmoed with a shorter loop entering the town with the finish-line in Voortrekker Road.

The 1st two days of the championships will see riders compete in the time trial on a 14.6 km circuit leading out of town onto the Mossel Bay road towards the Safari Ostrich farm, and back to town. The 3rd day of the event will be the start of the road races with the all Para cyclists, U11/U13 boys and girls and U/15 girls taking place on the time trial route of 14.6 km. The next 3 days will be the road races for the rest of the categories.

The following routes with distances will be utilized: 14.6km, 88m ascent, 52.8km, 473m ascent, 61.0km, 305m ascent, 86.8km, 822m ascent, 99.8km, 908m ascent 120.8km, 1,178m ascent and the 154.8km, 1,529m ascent.

The main attraction at the 2018 SA National Road and Time Trial Championships will be the Elite, U/23 and Junior men’s and woman’s races that will take place on Saturday, 10 February 2018.

Besides the beautiful scenery of Oudthoorn and the Little Karoo, there are many attractions including the Cango Caves, Cango Wildlife Ranch, Safari & Higate Ostrich Farms (both situated on the official routes), Swartberg Pass, Wilgewandel, C.P.
