Abriella Bredell’s dream was to set the world record for the youngest person to swim the Robben Island Channel in order to raise funds for her favourite charity, the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital - a challenge she took upon herself.

The Robben Island Swim (between Robben Island and Blouberg mainland) is considered the “Everest” of every open water swimmer in South Africa and offers an unparalleled challenge to open water swimmers in South Africa and around the world.

Abriella's Record Swim Boost for Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital (Continue from Page 1) The 11-year-old girl from Jeffreys Bay, learner at the Victory Christian School loves swimming. Abriella is very competitive, enjoys swimming in races, improving her times, like learning new things, keeping fit and taking care of her body. “Swimming does all of the above for me,” says Abriella.

She has been training at Brenton’s Swim School and Liquid Lines in St. Francis Bay since she was only two years old. Her training schedule includes open water swimming at Marina Martinique in Jeffreys Bay, 6 times a week. Her ultimate goal in swimming was to practise hard and to swim the Robben Island Channel.

The Robben Island crossing is regarded as one of the toughest open water swims in the world. Water temperatures of sub 15 degrees celcius, apex predators, swimming through a busy shipping lane, big swells and wind whipped seas were some of the many challenges Abriella had to to face during her swim.

Tickets to the 134th edition of the Sun Met Celebrated with G.H. Mumm are in demand as racing enthusiasts and fashion trail blazers are set to descend upon Kenilworth Race Course to celebrate and experience the thrill of Africa’s Richest Race Day on Saturday, 27 January 2018.

The swimmers left Robben Island around 8h00 in near perfect conditions for a crossing, with the water temperature remaining between 14-15 degrees Celsius, light winds, no major currents and sunny skies. They quickly got into a rhythm and only stopped to hydrate. Abriella completed the swim in three hours and eight minutes and became the youngest person ever to cross the notorious 7.6km channel from Robben Island to Big Bay in Blouberg. “It was a bit cold at the Island, but the water warmed up as we swam and I really enjoyed the swim,” Abriella said.

Abriella returned to school and will take some time out from training, whilst focussing on other school sports like netball and athletics, while contemplating her next big challenge.

The team assisting Abriella was on standby from 29 December 2018, waiting for the right conditions to attempt one of the most significant swims in the world of open water swimming. On 12 January 2018 Abriella met with her swim coach and mentor Brenton and a discission was made to attempt the swim.

“She is very young and I commend her for her bravery. This was something that she purposed in her heart. Although part of her goal was to set a new world record as the world’s youngest person to participate in this type of initiative, she did it for the children and only she herself grasps that more than anything,” said Pierre Bredell.

Her father, Pierre Bredell said the family travelled to Cape Town twice every month for the past two years so Abriella could train. She trained during the coldest times in winter and took part in the Cold Water Classic where she swam three miles in 13 degrees Celsius during the Jeffreys Bay Winterfestival. In October she also participated in the 3 Anchor Bay swim where she swam 5km in 12 degrees Celsius.

The idea of a children’s hospital in Cape Town as a living memorial took hold of South African servicemen who were awaiting demobilisation in Italy. It captured their imagination so strongly that many of the servicemen gave two days of their pay towards the ideal, and these funds were held in a trust by the South African Red Cross Society who began to champion its establishment. In May 1945, it was suggested that a children’s hospital be built as a Red Cross War Memorial – to honour the service of all South Africans who contributed to the Allied victory. The Hospital officially opened its doors in June 1956.

Western Cape’s Triggerfish Nominated For An Oscar Local animation studio, Triggerfish, which is based in Bergvliet, worked on the project with international producers Magic Light Pictures. The film, based on the Roald Dahl book of the same name, has already won numerous other awards including the Cristal at the animation industry’s flagship festival held in Annecy, France. It is also nominated for other awards including the Annie Awards which take place in February, a British Animation award and the International Emmy Kids Awards, which take place in April.

The animation is voiced by a world-class cast, including Dominic West from “The Affair”, Rose Leslie from “Game of Thrones” and Gemma Chan, “The Humans”.

To date “Revolting Rhymes” has already won several awards, including a BAFTA Children’s Award, for best Animation, and a European Animation Award.

Wesgro CEO Tim Harris said that this achievement will help put Cape animation on the world map. “We have some of the most talented animators in the world located in Cape Town and the Western Cape, and this nomination confirms it.”

A R156 million Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) project to rehabilitate and make design improvements to the R305 between Stilbaai and the N2 is nearing completion. Work started in January 2016 and is expected to be complete in March 2018.

Wesgro – Cape Town and the Western Cape’s Official Tourism, Trade and Investment Promotion Agency – is pleased to announce that two employees in the Film and Media Promotion Unit, Monica Rorvik and Lisa Mini, have officially been certified as film commissioners. The Agency has also become a member of the Africa Film Commissions Network (AFCNet).

Wesgro is mandated to promote Cape Town and the Western Cape for film and media production.

The team has been incredibly successful to date, helping land R1,56 billion in production value in the province in the last financial year (2015/2016). This will result in 3 271 full time equivalent jobs being created.

This new membership should lead to even greater access for the Wesgro team as they continue to promote Cape Town and the Western Cape as an inspiring place to create.

Completed sections of the road have been opened to traffic since December 2017.

The only outstanding parts of the project are: the last 500m of road towards the bridge at Stilbaai; the climbing lane, approximately 3km from Stilbaai; final sealing from km 12 to the bridge at Stilbaai; The paved walkway from Melkhoutfontein to Stilbaai; and general finishing and cleaning of the road reserve.

AFCNet grew from Pan-African locations research supported by the South African Department of Arts and Culture. At markets globally, film commissions from around the world have the opportunity to come together to form panels, or even market themselves together to highlight funding offerings, locations and the film work opportunities from their respective continents.

The AFCNet initiative provides a voice for Africa in such fora and with Wesgro now part of this initiative, Cape Town and the Western Cape will also be better positioned as a key film and media production destination.

During the construction period, many people have benefited directly from the short-term employment and skills training opportunities that the project has delivered. Contract expenditure to date is R11,7 million for targeted enterprises, and R2 million for local labour from the Hessequa local municipal area.

The Department thanks motorists for their patience and urges them to exercise caution at all times. Motorists are already enjoying a safer and more pleasant travelling experience on the R305.

Five Tips To Improve Your Financial Fitness In 2018 When it comes to financial planning, doing the work to ensure you’re prepared for unexpected emergencies is just as important as ticking off your other goals and New Year’s resolutions. The beginning of the year is also the perfect time to review your various insurance policies.

“If you’ve made modifications to the body of the vehicle, outside of repairs, you need to declare this,” Nagtegaal points out.

Look at the extras offered by your insurer. Perhaps you’ve bought another car and don’t need to pay extra for car hire or a courtesy car. Review these extra features and take out what you don’t need. Have you started a side-hustle during the year that relies on car use? Then you need to let your insurer know as not disclosing this could have an adverse impact should you submit a claim.

Life, disability and funeral cover - “Review your life, disability, and funeral cover to ensure you’re still appropriately covered,” explains Nagtegaal.

Understand the different types of cover and how the policy works. There are several questions you should ask: under what conditions will my cover pay out and how (e.g. lump sum or monthly for life cover)? Are there any exclusions? If so, what are they and how do they affect you or your family?

In terms of the actual insurance payout, what factors influence the value of my payout and does the amount I’m insured for grow? Can I change it if I realise I’m under-insured?

According to Vera Nagtegaal, Executive Head of Hippo.co.za, it’s not uncommon for people to take out short and long-term insurance policies and not give their policies another thought. “Usually, once the paperwork is out of the way, these are completely forgotten about until something happens that needs urgent attention.

But, it is incredibly important for consumers to regularly review these – especially in the event that their lifestyles and needs have changed.”

If the state of your physical or mental health changed in the past year, notify your insurer to find out if this may have any impact on your cover. Don’t hide this - your insurance could refuse to pay out if you’re not honest.

Nagtegaal says having a simple checklist, and a set of questions for your service provider that you review at least once a year will help you understand which policies need your attention.

Household insurance - Moving homes or buying large household items shouldn’t be the only reason you review your household insurance cover.

Have you bought new appliances and notified your insurer? Look at what your policy will and won’t cover – and if there are special clauses for specific items. Draw up an insurance checklist and compare what you’ve insured and what still needs to be insured. A spreadsheet can help you organise your list.

Perhaps you’ve downscaled on your home size and your possessions. Make sure you’re not over-insured. If you’ve changed the structure of your home in any way, declare this to your insurer. Alterations will affect how your risk is measured, the value of your property and so on.

Motor vehicle insurance - When it comes to reviewing your motor vehicle insurance, you should look to see if the information you supplied a year ago still applies.

Think about the amount of debt you have and how much you’ll need to pay it off in the event of your death.

“It is important to spend time reviewing your policies. “If you are not familiar with the technical details of the various types of cover, it is recommended that you speak to an advisor who will be able to guide you through the process of evaluating your policies. It is also equally important that policyholders are aware if the cost and benefits of any policies have changed. While it may not always be necessary to swap providers, it is incredibly important for consumers to compare what other providers may be offering,” Nagtegaal concludes.

Street Artists “Graffiti”

The Second International Public Art Festival In Salt River

Parking Garage of New Luxury Sea Point Shopping Centre In what is a first for a Cape Town retail centre, street art is being incorporated as a dominant feature in the ARTEM galleria in Sea Point, which is currently undergoing extensive renovations – with completion expected in February 2018.

The entire parking area for the ultra-luxurious centre, which is situated on Sea Point’s Main Road, will become a giant canvas, featuring the edgy designs of a young group of street artists from Pretoria who have been commissioned to turn the blank walls into an urban gallery.

Lethlogonolo Mathabe, Sam Shaba, Tebogo Qhingana and Patrick Rulore are four of the members of this dynamic street art crew, working under the leadership of the group founder Khutjo Tsebe. They have named their group “Visualz Khorr” and explain that before this project came along, they had been working hard at finding ways in which to collaborate as individual artists on a shared project.

South Africa will experience its second annual International Public Art Festival (IPAF), a 9-day festival to be held from 10 - 19 February 2018, in the community of Salt River. The Festival falls within the art month in Cape Town, with events such as the Cape Town Art Fair and That Art Fair.

This second festival promises to yet again bring together an eclectic mix of artists from different continents, in one space for nine days, to paint beautiful, large murals for the public to observe and engage with the local and international artists. Each artist will be given a wall space in Salt River as they interpret this year’s theme of “Nature Doesn’t Need Us: We Need Nature.” Between 2017 and 2018, 80 murals would have been painted in Salt River.

The festival, is just one of BAZ-ART’s mission to use art as a fun outlet for social change, one community at a time and draw art lovers out into the streets. Attendance is free, but private guided tours by local certified tour guides and spray paint workshop hosted by renowned SA artists can be bought from Webticket.

This year Baz-Art is partnering with IPAF Mexico and IPAF Canada. Thanks to the strong partnership with the respective embassies and the city of Cape Town, IPAF 2018 will see artists from a variety of genres and places coming from as far as Flanders, France, Ukraine, Finland, alongside a dozen local artists from South Africa.

Asked about why Baz-Art brought this annual event to Cape Town, organizer Alexandre Tilmans said, “Public festivals act as a creative vessel to enhance artists and make the communities stand strong together. This festival showcases the rich history, creativity, skills, diversity and style of South Africa’s public artists, as a result, we act as a platform for painting murals and billboards providing commissioned work to South African artists at a local and international level.”

Investec Cape Town Art Fair to launch new special project - SOLO Now in its sixth edition, Investec Cape Town Art Fair (ICTAF) continues to work alongside a growing number of local and international galleries who support the artistic practices of emerging and established artists from around the world, with the introduction of a new section, SOLO, to the fair. ICTAF2018 will run from 16-18 February 2018 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC).

Nontobeko Ntombela has been appointed as the curator of the inaugural iteration of SOLO, working alongside Fair Curator Tumelo Mosaka and the ICTAF team.

SOLO will focus on the production of women artists, offering different perspectives of the widespread socio-political issues faced by women in both public and private spheres, while also highlighting their contribution to the art world.

Ntombela has played an active role in the art world for more than a decade. In light of the success of Investec Cape Town Art Fair and the recent opening of the Zeitz MOCAA she says she is excited about the contribution Cape Town is paying to the art world.

Ntombela has produced numerous critically-engaged exhibitions and projects, including a collaboration with artist Reshma Chhiba, The Two Talking Yonis, a series of installations and she also curated Fragile Archive at the Johannesburg Art Gallery.

The new ARTEM galleria, which was formerly the Adelphi Centre, will house a prestigious curated Art Gallery – entitled ARTEM Gallery – when completed.

Eugenia Chapman Campbell, the curator of the new gallery, spotted the work of Visualz Khorr on social media and approached them about using the walls of the ARTEM parking garage as a showcase for their work.

The idea of edgy street art combining with an ultra-luxurious retail experience may seem to be a strange relationship at first, but Ahsan Darvesh, President of Da’Realty who own ARTEM, explains that art and visual beauty will be woven into the entire centre once complete, with art pieces being exhibited throughout the building in the public spaces and that the idea is to also help promote the work of emerging artists in this beautiful new galleria.

Showcasing up-and-coming artists - Ahsan, who is passionate about art in all its forms, says that whilst street art as a movement in Africa is in its infancy compared to many overseas cities, it is definitely something to watch. Ahsan explains that he feels strongly about nurturing this group of young up-and-coming artists who have chosen street art as their artistic spring board based on their circumstances and means.

The completed ARTEM centre will feature black and white marble throughout, beautiful Italian lighting, hand crafted brass balustrades, a lobby entrance with a door man, a hand-crafted gold mosaic logo and valet parking - just a few examples of what can be expected from this exciting new galleria. A combination of soft awnings and black metal awnings running along the entire ARTEM street front will transform the strip into a blend of Rodeo Drive meets the Champs Elysees - in the heart of Cape Town.

Within Africa, Ntombela has been a faculty member of Àsìkò for the past three years. Àsìkò is an international roaming project, modelled as a laboratory, residency and academy for curators and artists that takes place is different African cities; Lagos, Accra, Dakar, Addis Ababa, and Mozambique.

Internationally, she has participated in prominent curatorial projects including FRAC Des Pays De La Loire (France), the German South African Bilateral Curatorial Exchange, The New Kirkcudbright International Arts Festival (Scotland) and Break the Silence hosted by the University of Dundee (Scotland).

ASA Launches Athletix Grand Prix Series Athletics South Africa is excited to launch the ASA Athletix Grand Prix Series in which a total prize incentive of R1 365 000.00 is offered to athletes to produce outstanding performances.

This competition will feature three Grand Prix Meetings in March, one month prior to the Commonwealth Games (8 - 15 April 2018 in Australia). South Africa’s finest will have the ideal opportunity to hone their skills in a competitive environment as part of their global preparations.

These Track & Field Meetings will take place in Johannesburg (Thursday, 1 March 2018), Tshwane (Thursday, 8 March 2018) and Paarl (Thursday, 22 March 2018).

This elite series is intended to host and attract top athletes from around the world to test their best performances in South Africa.

The Meetings will have a tight programme lasting for 90 minutes. This will be an exciting evening out for SA athletics fans. Expect a full programme that will be compacted into 90 minutes of athletic action that is sure to have spectators at the edge of their seats. With the standard of South African athletics showing tremendous improvement over the last few years, there is an ever growing hunger by fans to witness some of the world’s best athletes competing on home soil.

“We are excited to announce the series which we believe restores our domestic Track & Field season right back on top where it was about a decade ago,” said Aleck Skhosana, the President of ASA. “These Meetings will be explosive, entertaining and of the highest standard.”

“This is the ideal opportunity for our athletes to put in those final touches before heading off to Australia and to other international destinations to represent this country in the best possible shape.”

Four of our current athletes have broken the 10 seconds barrier for the 100m, while two have gone below 20 seconds in the 200m.

South African record holder Akani Simbine, who had a brilliant domestic and international season last year going five times under 10 seconds, is expected to continue his duel with Thando Roto in the 100m, who also dipped under 10 seconds.

World champions Wayde van Niekerk (400m) - recovering from injury, Caster Semenya (800m), Luvo Manyonga (Long Jump) and world number three Ruswahl Samaai (Long Jump,) are also expected to be the highlight of the 2018 season and the Grand Prix could offer some of them the platform to take off the new season.

Swim for Multiple Sclerosis at Sanlam Cape Mile MS is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that interrupts the flow of information within the brain and between the brain and body.

Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis.

“As a person with MS, swimming is my saving grace,” says Dieckmann. “I use to partake in various different sports, but now I can only swim. I’ve taken part in the Sanlam Cape Mile since the event’s inception.” ‟It’s ideal for swimmers that are new to open water swimming as it is very safe and there are plenty of qualified lifeguards on standby. It is also great for seasoned swimmers. It is hosted at a beautiful venue and is a lot of fun. The atmosphere and vibe is amazing, while the music, people, food and drinks are awesome.”

“In 2018 we will once again use the Sanlam Cape Mile as a fundraiser and awareness platform for MS,” continues Dieckmann. “Currently we have 16 swimmers ready to compete in support of the cause.”

Taking place at the Eikenhof Dam (Grabouw Country Club/Western Cape) on Sunday, 18 February 2018, the Sanlam Cape Mile brought to you by Sanlam Investments has attracted the attention of a group of swimmers who will participate in support of Multiple Sclerosis South Africa (MSSA).

Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2011 at the age of 31, Claudia Dieckmann is a keen swimmer that will also be seen in action at the 2018 Sanlam Cape Mile.

This number is sure to increase. The swimmers pledge to raise a certain amount for the charity and in exchange they will receive an entry into the event and have swimming attire that will set them apart from the rest of the field. ‟We want to make people aware of the fact that dealing with MS is a team effort.

Managing the disease requires help from doctors, medical persons, loved ones, caregivers and support groups. We are looking forward to taking part in the 2018 Sanlam Cape Mile and invite all swimmers to join our cause.”

Helderberg Craft Beer Fest 2018 Following a highly successful inaugural beer fest held in 2017, Strand Rotary Club will be hosting the second Helderberg Craft Beer Fest on 17 February 2018.

The event will be held at Southey’s Vines in the heart of Somerset West.

The event will feature many craft brewers from the Western Cape. Apart from the craft brewers there will be a winery, several food vendors and entertainment for the kiddies. Live music will include Celine, Ebeneze Ginsberg, David Mason, Mark Haze, Lee Berg and Sam and Calla.
