Abriella Bredell’s dream was to set the world record for the youngest person to swim the Robben Island Channel in order to raise funds for her favourite charity, the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital - a challenge she took upon herself. The Robben Island Swim (between Robben Island and Blouberg mainland) is considered the “Everest” of every open water swimmer in South Africa and offers an unparalleled challenge to open water swimmers in South Africa and around the world.
Premier Sporting Events going ahead as planned
Two of the City of Cape Town’s premier events, the Cape Town Cycle Tour now in its 40th year, and the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon celebrating 49 years, will go ahead as planned for March 2018. The ongoing severe drought has presented a harsh reality for both events, their stakeholders and all the participants.
TRAVEL & TOURISM Page 8
The iconic Cape Town Cycle Tour #40take2, the world’s largest timed Cycle Race will be staged on 11 March 2018.
It combines the beauty and challenge of Robben Island and Table Mountain, both world-renowned sites.
“The Cape Town Cycle Tour Management Team has been working tirelessly over the last year, looking at ways to ensure this iconic event can take place. A comprehensive plan is in place with all our suppliers and service providers to ensure that we reduce our reliance and impact on the municipal water supply to as close to 0% as possible. We believe this is achievable and are making every effort to meet this goal,” says Cape Town Cycle Tour Director David Bellairs.

Abriella's Record Swim Boost for Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital (Continue from Page 1) The 11-year-old girl from Jeffreys Bay, learner at the Victory Christian School loves swimming. Abriella is very competitive, enjoys swimming in races, improving her times, like learning new things, keeping fit and taking care of her body. “Swimming does all of the above for me,” says Abriella. She has been training at Brenton’s Swim School and Liquid Lines in St. Francis Bay since she was only two years old. Her training schedule includes open water swimming at Marina Martinique in Jeffreys Bay, 6 times a week. Her ultimate goal in swimming was to practise hard and to swim the Robben Island Channel.

The Robben Island crossing is regarded as one of the toughest open water swims in the world. Water temperatures of sub 15 degrees celcius, apex predators, swimming through a busy shipping lane, big swells and wind whipped seas were some of the many challenges Abriella had to to face during her swim.
An amount of R156 032.56 has already been raise by Abriella Bredell on www.backabuddy. co.za with a fundraising target of R2 million in aid of the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.

Tickets to the 134th edition of the Sun Met Celebrated with G.H. Mumm are in demand as racing enthusiasts and fashion trail blazers are set to descend upon Kenilworth Race Course to celebrate and experience the thrill of Africa’s Richest Race Day on Saturday, 27 January 2018.
The swimmers left Robben Island around 8h00 in near perfect conditions for a crossing, with the water temperature remaining between 14-15 degrees Celsius, light winds, no major currents and sunny skies. They quickly got into a rhythm and only stopped to hydrate. Abriella completed the swim in three hours and eight minutes and became the youngest person ever to cross the notorious 7.6km channel from Robben Island to Big Bay in Blouberg. “It was a bit cold at the Island, but the water warmed up as we swam and I really enjoyed the swim,” Abriella said.
Abriella returned to school and will take some time out from training, whilst focussing on other school sports like netball and athletics, while contemplating her next big challenge.

The team assisting Abriella was on standby from 29 December 2018, waiting for the right conditions to attempt one of the most significant swims in the world of open water swimming. On 12 January 2018 Abriella met with her swim coach and mentor Brenton and a discission was made to attempt the swim.
“She is very young and I commend her for her bravery. This was something that she purposed in her heart. Although part of her goal was to set a new world record as the world’s youngest person to participate in this type of initiative, she did it for the children and only she herself grasps that more than anything,” said Pierre Bredell.

Her father, Pierre Bredell said the family travelled to Cape Town twice every month for the past two years so Abriella could train. She trained during the coldest times in winter and took part in the Cold Water Classic where she swam three miles in 13 degrees Celsius during the Jeffreys Bay Winterfestival. In October she also participated in the 3 Anchor Bay swim where she swam 5km in 12 degrees Celsius.

The Ritz Returns!
Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital - A place of Hope and Healing
Cape Town Icon Reinvented
After a R120-million rejuvenation, The Ritz hotel in the vibrant Cape Town suburb of Sea Point is ready to welcome locals and tourists to the most glamorous urban resort the Mother City has to offer. An icon of the city’s skyline since the early 1970s, over the decades this oncestylish address slowly lost its lustre until, in 2016, the Ritz Hotel Management Company (Pty) Ltd or RHMC saw an opportunity to revitalise – and reimagine – this faded star of the Atlantic Seaboard. That process began with a thorough refurbishment of the 23-story building, the age of the structure necessitating a complete overhaul of the insulation, plumbing and lift shafts. With the ‘bones’ of the building brought into the 21st-century, the transformation from faded star to contemporary glamour could begin. And the end result is nothing short of staggering. A sleek porte cochere of steel and glass greets guests on arrival, a fitting introduction to the glamorous lobby of glittering golden palm trees and front desk of gleaming white marble. No mobile app checkin or anodyne staff here: rather, expect refined personalised service to become a hallmark of The Ritz. Continue Reading Page 3
RETIREMENT Page 9
The idea of a children’s hospital in Cape Town as a living memorial took hold of South African servicemen who were awaiting demobilisation in Italy. It captured their imagination so strongly that many of the servicemen gave two days of their pay towards the ideal, and these funds were held in a trust by the South African Red Cross Society who began to champion its establishment. In May 1945, it was suggested that a children’s hospital be built as a Red Cross War Memorial – to honour the service of all South Africans who contributed to the Allied victory. The Hospital officially opened its doors in June 1956.

Premier Sporting Events Going Ahead As Planned (Continue from Page 1) Eliminating the event’s reliance on municipal drinking water will be achieved through a variety of strategies and solutions including: The use of grey water, the use of desalinated water, spring water brought in from outside the City of Cape Town, chemical toilets & hand sanitisers, and no shower facilities will be provided. “As an event that has always prided itself on its proactive and responsible approach to environmental matters, we will do everything possible to ensure that our events’ water footprint has a negligible impact on our precious water resource – while still delivering a world-class event.” The entire net surplus of the Cycle Tour is distributed to the Rotary Club of Claremont and the Pedal Power Association. “The cost of the water strategy will mean that the Cape Town Cycle Tour’s contribution to charity will possibly be slightly less in 2018,” says Bellairs. “But we feel strongly that the event must go ahead, as many of these charities rely on this income for their projects, not to mention the significant positive economic impact the Cycle Tour has for the city and the province.” 2018 Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon

Western Cape’s Triggerfish Nominated For An Oscar Local animation studio, Triggerfish, which is based in Bergvliet, worked on the project with international producers Magic Light Pictures. The film, based on the Roald Dahl book of the same name, has already won numerous other awards including the Cristal at the animation industry’s flagship festival held in Annecy, France. It is also nominated for other awards including the Annie Awards which take place in February, a British Animation award and the International Emmy Kids Awards, which take place in April. The animation is voiced by a world-class cast, including Dominic West from “The Affair”, Rose Leslie from “Game of Thrones” and Gemma Chan, “The Humans”. To date “Revolting Rhymes” has already won several awards, including a BAFTA Children’s Award, for best Animation, and a European Animation Award. Wesgro CEO Tim Harris said that this achievement will help put Cape animation on the world map. “We have some of the most talented animators in the world located in Cape Town and the Western Cape, and this nomination confirms it.” Wesgro – Cape Town and the Western Cape’s official Tourism, Trade and Investment Promotion Agency, is excited by the news that “Revolting Rhymes”, a film animated by Triggerfish studios in Cape Town, has been nominated as one of the five Oscar finalists in the ‘best animated short film’ category.
‟Regardless of the outcome of the results evening, Triggerfish is already a winner, and is helping boost the brand of our film and media sector. We are extremely excited about this nomination, and we wish Triggerfish and ‘Revolting Rhymes’ the best of luck.”

Stilbaai Roadworks Project
Wesgro Joins Africa Film
Nearing Completion
Commissions Network
A R156 million Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) project to rehabilitate and make design improvements to the R305 between Stilbaai and the N2 is nearing completion. Work started in January 2016 and is expected to be complete in March 2018.
Wesgro – Cape Town and the Western Cape’s Official Tourism, Trade and Investment Promotion Agency – is pleased to announce that two employees in the Film and Media Promotion Unit, Monica Rorvik and Lisa Mini, have officially been certified as film commissioners. The Agency has also become a member of the Africa Film Commissions Network (AFCNet). Wesgro is mandated to promote Cape Town and the Western Cape for film and media production. The team has been incredibly successful to date, helping land R1,56 billion in production value in the province in the last financial year (2015/2016). This will result in 3 271 full time equivalent jobs being created. This new membership should lead to even greater access for the Wesgro team as they continue to promote Cape Town and the Western Cape as an inspiring place to create.
Completed sections of the road have been opened to traffic since December 2017. The only outstanding parts of the project are: the last 500m of road towards the bridge at Stilbaai; the climbing lane, approximately 3km from Stilbaai; final sealing from km 12 to the bridge at Stilbaai; The paved walkway from Melkhoutfontein to Stilbaai; and general finishing and cleaning of the road reserve.
AFCNet grew from Pan-African locations research supported by the South African Department of Arts and Culture. At markets globally, film commissions from around the world have the opportunity to come together to form panels, or even market themselves together to highlight funding offerings, locations and the film work opportunities from their respective continents. The AFCNet initiative provides a voice for Africa in such fora and with Wesgro now part of this initiative, Cape Town and the Western Cape will also be better positioned as a key film and media production destination.
During the construction period, many people have benefited directly from the short-term employment and skills training opportunities that the project has delivered. Contract expenditure to date is R11,7 million for targeted enterprises, and R2 million for local labour from the Hessequa local municipal area. The Department thanks motorists for their patience and urges them to exercise caution at all times. Motorists are already enjoying a safer and more pleasant travelling experience on the R305. Photo L-R: Monica Rorvik and Lisa Mini
Tim Harris, CEO of Wesgro, said: “With two Film Commissioners employed at Wesgro, the Agency has demonstrated its commitment to marketing and growing the film and media industry in Cape Town and the Western Cape. Film and media is a relationship industry and our filmmakers are often expanding their work into the rest of Africa.” ‟For example, 'Madmax: Fury Road' was shot in various countries including Namibia and had its studio work done at the Cape Town Film Studios. By being able to better link these opportunities through the network, I am confident our new film commissioners will attract even more productions to the Western Cape.” Monica Rorvik, one of Wesgro’s new film commissioners, and Head of the Film and Media Promotion Unit added: “Marketing the continent with other commissioners in international markets will help expand Pan African awareness, positioning the Cape as a gateway to the rest of Africa.” ‟The goal is to help drive projects to our region and helping our own filmmakers in expanding their Pan African network.” “Wesgro looks forward to working with other commissioners across the African continent, as we seek to grow our respective economies and create jobs,” Harris concluded.

Five Tips To Improve Your Financial Fitness In 2018 When it comes to financial planning, doing the work to ensure you’re prepared for unexpected emergencies is just as important as ticking off your other goals and New Year’s resolutions. The beginning of the year is also the perfect time to review your various insurance policies.
“If you’ve made modifications to the body of the vehicle, outside of repairs, you need to declare this,” Nagtegaal points out. Look at the extras offered by your insurer. Perhaps you’ve bought another car and don’t need to pay extra for car hire or a courtesy car. Review these extra features and take out what you don’t need. Have you started a side-hustle during the year that relies on car use? Then you need to let your insurer know as not disclosing this could have an adverse impact should you submit a claim. Life, disability and funeral cover - “Review your life, disability, and funeral cover to ensure you’re still appropriately covered,” explains Nagtegaal. Understand the different types of cover and how the policy works. There are several questions you should ask: under what conditions will my cover pay out and how (e.g. lump sum or monthly for life cover)? Are there any exclusions? If so, what are they and how do they affect you or your family? In terms of the actual insurance payout, what factors influence the value of my payout and does the amount I’m insured for grow? Can I change it if I realise I’m under-insured?
According to Vera Nagtegaal, Executive Head of Hippo.co.za, it’s not uncommon for people to take out short and long-term insurance policies and not give their policies another thought. “Usually, once the paperwork is out of the way, these are completely forgotten about until something happens that needs urgent attention. But, it is incredibly important for consumers to regularly review these – especially in the event that their lifestyles and needs have changed.”
If the state of your physical or mental health changed in the past year, notify your insurer to find out if this may have any impact on your cover. Don’t hide this - your insurance could refuse to pay out if you’re not honest.
Nagtegaal says having a simple checklist, and a set of questions for your service provider that you review at least once a year will help you understand which policies need your attention. Household insurance - Moving homes or buying large household items shouldn’t be the only reason you review your household insurance cover. Have you bought new appliances and notified your insurer? Look at what your policy will and won’t cover – and if there are special clauses for specific items. Draw up an insurance checklist and compare what you’ve insured and what still needs to be insured. A spreadsheet can help you organise your list. Perhaps you’ve downscaled on your home size and your possessions. Make sure you’re not over-insured. If you’ve changed the structure of your home in any way, declare this to your insurer. Alterations will affect how your risk is measured, the value of your property and so on. Motor vehicle insurance - When it comes to reviewing your motor vehicle insurance, you should look to see if the information you supplied a year ago still applies.
Think about the amount of debt you have and how much you’ll need to pay it off in the event of your death. “It is important to spend time reviewing your policies. “If you are not familiar with the technical details of the various types of cover, it is recommended that you speak to an advisor who will be able to guide you through the process of evaluating your policies. It is also equally important that policyholders are aware if the cost and benefits of any policies have changed. While it may not always be necessary to swap providers, it is incredibly important for consumers to compare what other providers may be offering,” Nagtegaal concludes.

ShoOops – “We’re better Together” The Red Sock story began when three soldiers held in a prisoner of war camp during WW2 promised to wear Red Socks to remember each other and always be “Together“, should they make it back home alive.
THE NEWSPAPER
Get Off To A Flying Start In 2018 And See More Of South Africa!
This symbol of “Togetherness” was then brought to life again years later when two friends, John McInroy and Ian Symons, sought a way to honour and celebrate life through their own friendship. Hearing the tale of the original Red Sockers, and in a crazy moment, they too decided to give each-other a pair of red socks and vowed to wear them every Friday. By doing this small inconsequential thing they committed to consciously connect, remember and celebrate their friendship, and to always be “Together” no matter where they might physically be in the world. Today the spirit of the Red Socks has spread across the world and they are worn on Fridays in over 70 countries. The simple act of gifting them OR exchanging them and then wearing them on Fridays has brought, and continues to bring, people from all walks of life ‘Together’: For many it has become just a simple way to consciously remind each-other, on one day every week, that they are loved and that they belong ‘Together’. For some, wearing Red Socks on Fridays is all about keeping memories alive of dear ones who may have already passed-on. For some the exchanging and wearing of Red Socks has helped inspire acts of forgiveness and redemption, helping to heal and bring back to life many scarred and broken relationships.
We all know “local is lekker” and in 2018 there’s no better time to explore South Africa. “Travel creates loads of unexpected adventures and it will fill your soul, as you experience a diverse range of cultures and new destinations,” says Luane Lavery, Brand Communications Manager for kulula.com. “South Africa is filled with great vibes and whether you are taking a road trip down the Garden Route, celebrating the maze of wine routes in the Western Cape or just chilling on the beach in Durban, our homeland has an all-round natural beauty that is in a class of its own,” she explains. Jozi - Not only is Johannesburg South Africa’s biggest city, but it’s an urban hub bursting with quirky districts, stirring history and corporate yuppies always on the go as they hustle to contribute to the Jozi jungle that offers safari experiences just an hour away. The city offers travellers the opportunity to venture into renewed neighbourhoods, where there are plenty of places to visit, at which eat and drink, and markets to explore. Go all-out cosmopolitan in some of the hippest and happening suburbs like Melville, Linden and Parkhurst as you indulge in some of the proudly South African nightlife. For something a little bit more on the wild side, visit the Lion and Safari Park or the Johannesburg Zoo.
For others, it is a powerful statement, a way of saying to others: ”I am with you, I see you, I hear you, I get strength from you, I love you…. in spite of our differences – social, cultural, political, language, racial, religious – we are not separate. Yes, we are different, but we are both also human, we are also connected, we live on common-ground, we are also the same”. For some, wearing Red Socks Together on Fridays has been an easy way to stand next to a friend, to show support and encouragement, to help them get back up on their feet, to motivate them to have the faith and courage to keep moving, especially when the journey of life gets hard. “No matter what “Together” means to you, we believe that the real MAGIC of “connecting” through pairs of Red Socks comes from the positive blessings and powerful ‘life-giving’ thoughts that they help trigger and that are being sent out across the globe throughout Fridays.” Remember too that by becoming a Red Socker you now belong to a huge global community of people like you, also wearing Red Socks on Fridays and who are also just trying to live a happy, active, fun-loving life. So look out for us. Oh yeah! And lastly, why do we call them ShoOops?! Well, if you didn’t know already, ShoOops is the sound that the mighty God of the universe hears every time a good thought and blessing is sent and received by someone wearing Red Socks on a Friday down here on earth.
Durbs is Africa’s busiest port and South Africa’s third largest city with a mesmeric overtone of cultures mixed with Indian spice. Think Indian Ocean, warm water and relaxing on the beach, move more inland to discover the heart of the Zulu culture and the beauty of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands or go on the ultimate hiking adventure in the majestic Drakensberg mountains. Get moving in South Africa’s fittest city with loads of recreational activities on offer, such as biking, fishing or just getting your surf on. The region is renowned for one of the world’s toughest marathons, the Comrades, after all, which is held annually between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Cape Town is definitely the city in South Africa with international appeal and you might just feel like you’re in a different country as it attracts millions of international tourists every year. The iconic Table Mountain, verdant winelands and spectacular white beaches are just a few of the attractions that this buzzing city has on offer. Take the cable car up the mountain or hike up Lion’s Head under the watchful eye of a full moon. Watch penguins waddling along Boulders Beach or catch a glimpse of the whales in the surf at Hermanus. George is perhaps best known as the gateway to one of our county’s most famous and best road trips, the Garden Route. Stretching 300km you will find magnificent landscapes as you take a drive from Mossel Bay in the west to Storms River in the east. The range of topography, vegetation, wildlife and outdoor activities is extraordinary. On the coast you’ll find some of the best beaches in South Africa, while inland you’ll find scenic lagoons and lakes, rolling hills and lastly the mountains of the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma ranges that divide the verdant Garden Route from the Little Karoo. SOUNDWAVES HEALTH CLINIC, the popular health spot on Gordon’s Bay beachfront, utilizes a variety of the most advanced elements of Frequency Therapy. Here, you may enjoy the benefit of having your body not only scanned, but also treated with truly front-line technology – in 1 location.
FREQUENCIES… Mysterious elements invisible to the eye, yet present in every object – human, animal, plant or rock; body organs, bacteria, viruses…indeed, every single thing that has been created! Technology can even let us hear the beautiful “songs” generated by the vibrations, or frequencies, of the planets and stars resonating throughout the universe!
Our “Foundational Scan” reads your complete skeletal system, nervous system, vascular system – in short, every system including eyes, skin, etc. Once the source of your disorder has been pinpointed, we can deal with it – painlessly, with no artificial means, and no discomfort.
Giant scientific strides since the mid-20th century have allowed mankind to exploit this phenomenon in a variety of fields – including Frequency Medicine (also known as Bio-resonance/Energy Medicine). This of course paved the way to a natural, non-invasive, non-artificial, alternative approach to good health. You may well ask how this is possible. The answer is simply based on 1 fundamental fact: every single object radiates its own RESONANT FREQUENCY – the unique frequency at which that object vibrates. The frequencies at which viruses/bacteria etc. can be killed were mathematically determined many decades ago. This means medical disorders can be treated by pulsing specific frequencies (sound waves) into the body, thus destroying microbes and other pathogens – even tumours, benign or malignant. Consequently, there is now much more hope for healing in a world where viruses/ bacteria are mutating so rapidly that science can’t keep up with developing new antibiotics. The extensive range of conditions and diseases treated successfully with sound waves the world over, includes emotional issues, i.e. depression, anxiety, ADHD and many others. An inseparable bond exists between body and mind – the one always influences the other. Frequency Therapy can treat both terrains…with no medication, no bodily invasion.
This has generated such tremendous enthusiasm that people can’t stop referring friends and family to us. A further great benefit: our scan includes your “pap smear”, “mammogram”, or prostate check, at the same time. ALL done with frequencies, with NO invasion of your body! Early detection is crucial for successful treatment, especially in the case of a life-threatening disease or tumour. Depending on the outcome of a scan, our treatment may even include a highly successful combination of Low Level (Cold) Laser Therapy and Millimetre Waves.

We believe a visit to our cosy, cheery consulting rooms in picturesque Old Cape Mall most certainly will revitalize you – in more ways than just one! Getting to know the Therapist
Can this type of therapy treat cancer? The answer is YES! Globally, frequencies have proven extremely effective in the fight against cancer. The secret? Frequencies are able to kill the stem cell of a cancer cell: no radiation, no chemicals, no scars, no hair loss, and no side-effects at all! (Naturally, this does NOT preclude life-saving surgery when necessary). In fact, many health professionals and scientists are growing excited about the seemingly inexhaustible ways sound waves are enhancing human (and animal) health!

Sprinkle some Valentine’s Love with Polkadraai & Popcorn February is the Month of Love and to celebrate this romantic time, Stellenbosch Hills has created the perfect couple. Enter Polkadraai & Popcorn! For Valentine’s month only, the light-hearted winery with the really good wines, has put together a special pairing of its colourful and fun-loving Polkadraai range of wines with simply moreish, gourmet-flavoured popcorn. Now’s the time to get cosy with your babe and live it up on the Polka side of life. On top of a lovely day out in the country, Stellenbosch Hills has laid on four Polkadraai & Popcorn combos that will simply melt your tastebuds. It’s handcrafted by famous gourmet popcorn maestros Guzzle & Wolf. For starters, the tasting line-up features the Polkadraai Sauvignon Blanc Brut 2017 with Guzzle & Wolf’s razzle-dazzle banana-coated popcorn. It’s so recognisably tropical in flavour, you just have to close your eyes to be transported to a love boat in the ocean somewhere in the Maldives. The Polkadraai Chenin Blanc/Sauvignon Blanc 2017 cha-cha with the all-round favourite: salted caramel popcorn. Try the popcorn with a sip of wine and magic happens. The popcorn’s salty kiss awakens a sweeter note in the wine and blooms with fruity aroma. Dark chocolate won’t be unexpected in this spread, especially as the popcorn dressing paired with the divine Polkadraai Pinotage/Merlot 2016. With pink the undisputed colour of love, the final spot belongs to Polkadraai Pinot Noir Sparkling Rosé 2017 served with the star of the show: strawberry popcorn. A seductive salmon coloured sparkling wine, the rosé is a sweet and medium-bodied bubbly that brims with red berry and strawberry flavours, and a hint of candyfloss. Nibble on those fluffy strawberry popcorn kisses and it’s a Cupid carnival in your mouth. It’s not for nothing that Polkadraai wines bear this name. The serious explanation makes reference to the winding Polkadraai road that connects the diverse vineyards used in the making of well-balanced and expressive wines. At the same time, the name reflects joie de vivre and all things polka - from the lively dance that has its roots in Bohemia to the fashionista’s playful polka dot pattern. REALTY
Secure a ‘PLAN B’ in Europe & PROTECT YOUR FAMILY’S FUTURE The opportunity to be able to put together a meaningful legacy that protects both you & your family’s future is something that many people want to explore. There are many options for consideration from traditional investments like the stock exchange or investment schemes, to more adventurous opportunities like flirting with Crypto currencies; and of course the tried and tested investment tool of tangible bricks and mortar. Each investment class has it’s own benefits, and depends on your appetite for risk and how quickly you want to maximize the final payout in terms of your financial plan. PROPERTY OWNERSHIP IN CYPRUS GIVES YOU ACCESS TO THE EU! In Cyprus, when you combine property ownership with securing permanent residency or a 2nd citizenship, then you’re really putting a meaningful plan B in place for yourself & your family. There are 2 property investment programmes available to immediately benefit you and your family: 1.
Securing Permanent Residency in 4 – 6 weeks
2.
Securing EU Citizenship in 3 months GETTING PERMANENT RESIDENCY
Cyprus’ permanent residency programme is the ONLY programme in Europe where 3 generations in the same family all secure residency FOR LIFE in 4 – 6 weeks of making application. By buying a single property for minimum €300,000 the entire family gets permanent residency permits. This means that the main applicant, the spouse, ALL dependent children up to age 25 and both the parents AND the parents-in-law qualify for residency. The family does not need to live in Cyprus for the residency permits to remain valid; nor does the investor need to buy in a special designated area (SDA). A tangible benefit is that the property CAN be rented out to earn a Euro-based income. Your investment truly works for you! GETTING EU CITIZENSHIP If urgently securing an EU passport for you and your family is a priority, then Cyprus’ ‘Citizenship through Investment’ programme is your solution. This is THE ONLY programme where EUROPEAN citizenship is guaranteed to be granted in 3 months; and all dependent children up to age 28 qualify. The investor and his/her entire family have visa-free access to more than 169 countries in the world; and complete freedom of access to the whole of the EU – including the UK. All Cypriot passport holders can live, work, study and travel anywhere in Europe without any restrictions. Now that’s a serious Plan B that’s worth investing in!

THE VIRTUAL WORKSPACE
-
CONSIDER THE NEW PARADIGM OF WORK
For many employers the virtual workplace, in which employees operate remotely from each other and from managers, is a reality now, and all indications are that it will become even more prevalent in the future. According to US teleworking advocacy group Global Workplace Analytics, 50% of the US workforce holds a job which is compatible with home-working and the work-from-home population has increased by 103% since 2005. Remote working is fast becoming a necessary part of our work lives. Like it or not, Millennials, who will make up 75% of the workforce by 2025, have a marked preference for flex work (hours and location) and it is a point of filter for the jobs they take or reject. With advances in technology – ubiquitous Internet, video conferencing, collaborative tools – working remotely has never been easier, and the rise in Digital Nomads seems to indicate that the trend is going to keep increasing. These advances are not just great for small companies with remote workers. Big, international companies with offices world-wide benefit as well. SAP, IBM and GE are three big players that leverage the advantages that distributed teams offer, and manage to thrive despite the distance between offices and workers. Cloud technology allows employers to offer more flexible working arrangements and increase work-force satisfaction. Aside from employee satisfaction there are other advantages to expanding crowded offices to a virtual platform: - The resource pool we rely on to fill our constant demand for talent, experts and specialists expands from our immediate vicinity to the world. - Research indicates that people are more productive, creative and make fewer mistakes when working in a stress-free environment.
- Lowered expenses and overheads on office environments. - Less commuting results in lower emissions per employee, lower transport costs and less traffic on the roads for those who have to be there. - Virtual teams save time, travel expenses, and eliminate a potential lack of access to experts. Directors and Business Owners need to think about offering remote work to employees as a way to entice them to join or to stay. Instead of salary increases, give your team a bit more flexibility, and see how that positively impacts morale and productivity! For more information visit www.businesstrends.co.za

BAZ-ART Presents
Street Artists “Graffiti”
The Second International Public Art Festival In Salt River
Parking Garage of New Luxury Sea Point Shopping Centre In what is a first for a Cape Town retail centre, street art is being incorporated as a dominant feature in the ARTEM galleria in Sea Point, which is currently undergoing extensive renovations – with completion expected in February 2018. The entire parking area for the ultra-luxurious centre, which is situated on Sea Point’s Main Road, will become a giant canvas, featuring the edgy designs of a young group of street artists from Pretoria who have been commissioned to turn the blank walls into an urban gallery. Lethlogonolo Mathabe, Sam Shaba, Tebogo Qhingana and Patrick Rulore are four of the members of this dynamic street art crew, working under the leadership of the group founder Khutjo Tsebe. They have named their group “Visualz Khorr” and explain that before this project came along, they had been working hard at finding ways in which to collaborate as individual artists on a shared project.
South Africa will experience its second annual International Public Art Festival (IPAF), a 9-day festival to be held from 10 - 19 February 2018, in the community of Salt River. The Festival falls within the art month in Cape Town, with events such as the Cape Town Art Fair and That Art Fair. This second festival promises to yet again bring together an eclectic mix of artists from different continents, in one space for nine days, to paint beautiful, large murals for the public to observe and engage with the local and international artists. Each artist will be given a wall space in Salt River as they interpret this year’s theme of “Nature Doesn’t Need Us: We Need Nature.” Between 2017 and 2018, 80 murals would have been painted in Salt River. The festival, is just one of BAZ-ART’s mission to use art as a fun outlet for social change, one community at a time and draw art lovers out into the streets. Attendance is free, but private guided tours by local certified tour guides and spray paint workshop hosted by renowned SA artists can be bought from Webticket. This year Baz-Art is partnering with IPAF Mexico and IPAF Canada. Thanks to the strong partnership with the respective embassies and the city of Cape Town, IPAF 2018 will see artists from a variety of genres and places coming from as far as Flanders, France, Ukraine, Finland, alongside a dozen local artists from South Africa. Asked about why Baz-Art brought this annual event to Cape Town, organizer Alexandre Tilmans said, “Public festivals act as a creative vessel to enhance artists and make the communities stand strong together. This festival showcases the rich history, creativity, skills, diversity and style of South Africa’s public artists, as a result, we act as a platform for painting murals and billboards providing commissioned work to South African artists at a local and international level.” Tickets are available on www.webticket.co.za
Investec Cape Town Art Fair to launch new special project - SOLO Now in its sixth edition, Investec Cape Town Art Fair (ICTAF) continues to work alongside a growing number of local and international galleries who support the artistic practices of emerging and established artists from around the world, with the introduction of a new section, SOLO, to the fair. ICTAF2018 will run from 16-18 February 2018 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). Nontobeko Ntombela has been appointed as the curator of the inaugural iteration of SOLO, working alongside Fair Curator Tumelo Mosaka and the ICTAF team. SOLO will focus on the production of women artists, offering different perspectives of the widespread socio-political issues faced by women in both public and private spheres, while also highlighting their contribution to the art world. Ntombela has played an active role in the art world for more than a decade. In light of the success of Investec Cape Town Art Fair and the recent opening of the Zeitz MOCAA she says she is excited about the contribution Cape Town is paying to the art world. Ntombela has produced numerous critically-engaged exhibitions and projects, including a collaboration with artist Reshma Chhiba, The Two Talking Yonis, a series of installations and she also curated Fragile Archive at the Johannesburg Art Gallery.
The new ARTEM galleria, which was formerly the Adelphi Centre, will house a prestigious curated Art Gallery – entitled ARTEM Gallery – when completed. Eugenia Chapman Campbell, the curator of the new gallery, spotted the work of Visualz Khorr on social media and approached them about using the walls of the ARTEM parking garage as a showcase for their work. The idea of edgy street art combining with an ultra-luxurious retail experience may seem to be a strange relationship at first, but Ahsan Darvesh, President of Da’Realty who own ARTEM, explains that art and visual beauty will be woven into the entire centre once complete, with art pieces being exhibited throughout the building in the public spaces and that the idea is to also help promote the work of emerging artists in this beautiful new galleria. Showcasing up-and-coming artists - Ahsan, who is passionate about art in all its forms, says that whilst street art as a movement in Africa is in its infancy compared to many overseas cities, it is definitely something to watch. Ahsan explains that he feels strongly about nurturing this group of young up-and-coming artists who have chosen street art as their artistic spring board based on their circumstances and means. The completed ARTEM centre will feature black and white marble throughout, beautiful Italian lighting, hand crafted brass balustrades, a lobby entrance with a door man, a hand-crafted gold mosaic logo and valet parking - just a few examples of what can be expected from this exciting new galleria. A combination of soft awnings and black metal awnings running along the entire ARTEM street front will transform the strip into a blend of Rodeo Drive meets the Champs Elysees - in the heart of Cape Town. For more information visit www.darealty.com Ntombela has played an active role in the local art world for more than a decade, holding curatorial positions at Johannesburg Art Gallery, BAT Centre (Durban), and Durban University of Technology Art Gallery. She has also served on a number of boards and committees including the National Arts Council, Visual Arts Network of South Africa (VANSA), KwaZulu Natal Society of Art, African Art Centre, and the Human Rights Trust. Within Africa, Ntombela has been a faculty member of Àsìkò for the past three years. Àsìkò is an international roaming project, modelled as a laboratory, residency and academy for curators and artists that takes place is different African cities; Lagos, Accra, Dakar, Addis Ababa, and Mozambique. Internationally, she has participated in prominent curatorial projects including FRAC Des Pays De La Loire (France), the German South African Bilateral Curatorial Exchange, The New Kirkcudbright International Arts Festival (Scotland) and Break the Silence hosted by the University of Dundee (Scotland). Swim for Multiple Sclerosis at Sanlam Cape Mile MS is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that interrupts the flow of information within the brain and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. “As a person with MS, swimming is my saving grace,” says Dieckmann. “I use to partake in various different sports, but now I can only swim. I’ve taken part in the Sanlam Cape Mile since the event’s inception.” ‟It’s ideal for swimmers that are new to open water swimming as it is very safe and there are plenty of qualified lifeguards on standby. It is also great for seasoned swimmers. It is hosted at a beautiful venue and is a lot of fun. The atmosphere and vibe is amazing, while the music, people, food and drinks are awesome.” “In 2018 we will once again use the Sanlam Cape Mile as a fundraiser and awareness platform for MS,” continues Dieckmann. “Currently we have 16 swimmers ready to compete in support of the cause.” Photo: Sanlam Cape Mile - Photo Credit: Tobias Ginsberg
Taking place at the Eikenhof Dam (Grabouw Country Club/Western Cape) on Sunday, 18 February 2018, the Sanlam Cape Mile brought to you by Sanlam Investments has attracted the attention of a group of swimmers who will participate in support of Multiple Sclerosis South Africa (MSSA). Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2011 at the age of 31, Claudia Dieckmann is a keen swimmer that will also be seen in action at the 2018 Sanlam Cape Mile.
This number is sure to increase. The swimmers pledge to raise a certain amount for the charity and in exchange they will receive an entry into the event and have swimming attire that will set them apart from the rest of the field. ‟We want to make people aware of the fact that dealing with MS is a team effort. Managing the disease requires help from doctors, medical persons, loved ones, caregivers and support groups. We are looking forward to taking part in the 2018 Sanlam Cape Mile and invite all swimmers to join our cause.” For more information visit www.multiplesclerosis.co.za
