Abriella Bredell’s dream was to set the world record for the youngest person to swim the Robben Island Channel in order to raise funds for her favourite charity, the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital - a challenge she took upon herself. The Robben Island Swim (between Robben Island and Blouberg mainland) is considered the “Everest” of every open water swimmer in South Africa and offers an unparalleled challenge to open water swimmers in South Africa and around the world.
Premier Sporting Events going ahead as planned
Two of the City of Cape Town’s premier events, the Cape Town Cycle Tour now in its 40th year, and the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon celebrating 49 years, will go ahead as planned for March 2018. The ongoing severe drought has presented a harsh reality for both events, their stakeholders and all the participants.
TRAVEL & TOURISM Page 8
The iconic Cape Town Cycle Tour #40take2, the world’s largest timed Cycle Race will be staged on 11 March 2018.
It combines the beauty and challenge of Robben Island and Table Mountain, both world-renowned sites.
“The Cape Town Cycle Tour Management Team has been working tirelessly over the last year, looking at ways to ensure this iconic event can take place. A comprehensive plan is in place with all our suppliers and service providers to ensure that we reduce our reliance and impact on the municipal water supply to as close to 0% as possible. We believe this is achievable and are making every effort to meet this goal,” says Cape Town Cycle Tour Director David Bellairs.
