Photo: Proposed Foreshore Freeway Precinct Development

The City of Cape Town announced the qualifying bidder for Foreshore Freeway Precinct development last month. The outcome of this innovative and ground-breaking approach to partner with the private sector to achieve public infrastructure is enormously exciting and has the potential to radically transform Cape Town’s spatial reality within the next decade or so. The appointed Bid Evaluation Committee having completed the Stage 1 of the bid evaluation process, announced that Mitchell Du Plessis Projects (Pty) Ltd, trading as Mitchell Du Plessis Associates (MDA) is the qualifying bidder. With this announcement the City of Cape Town is undertaking the momentous task of reshaping an iconic but underutilised precinct - approximately 6ha in size, located under and between the existing Foreshore Freeway viaducts and between the northern edge of the central business district (CBD) and the Cape Town Harbour. MDA’s proposal entails, among others, the completion of the unfinished sections of the freeways – these are the connections to and from Helen Suzman Boulevard; and the connections to and from the N1 and N2 freeways. Furthermore, the development proposes a combination of approximately 3 200 market-related residential units and a minimum of 450 affordable residential units.

ABRIELLA'S RECORD SWIM BOOST FOR RED CROSS WAR MEMORIAL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

“With no current access to the da Vinci in public hospitals, this will provide a valuable teaching opportunity across the private and public platforms,” says Dr Dimitri Erasmus CEO: Tygerberg Hospital. “Both registrars from our Tygerberg facility as well as those students training at Mediclinic Durbanville will have access to view and learn from these procedures,” Erasmus concludes.

Abriella Bredell’s dream was to set the world record for the youngest person to swim the Robben Island Channel in order to raise funds for her favourite charity, the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital - a challenge she took upon herself. The Robben Island Swim (between Robben Island and Blouberg mainland) is considered the “Everest” of every open water swimmer in South Africa and offers an unparalleled challenge to open water swimmers in South Africa and around the world.

Premier Sporting Events going ahead as planned

Two of the City of Cape Town’s premier events, the Cape Town Cycle Tour now in its 40th year, and the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon celebrating 49 years, will go ahead as planned for March 2018. The ongoing severe drought has presented a harsh reality for both events, their stakeholders and all the participants.

TRAVEL & TOURISM Page 8

The iconic Cape Town Cycle Tour #40take2, the world’s largest timed Cycle Race will be staged on 11 March 2018.

It combines the beauty and challenge of Robben Island and Table Mountain, both world-renowned sites.

“The Cape Town Cycle Tour Management Team has been working tirelessly over the last year, looking at ways to ensure this iconic event can take place. A comprehensive plan is in place with all our suppliers and service providers to ensure that we reduce our reliance and impact on the municipal water supply to as close to 0% as possible. We believe this is achievable and are making every effort to meet this goal,” says Cape Town Cycle Tour Director David Bellairs.

The Mediclinic surgical facilities, access to the da Vinci robot, nursing staff and expertise from Mediclinic associated doctors, are provided free of charge in a collaboration with the local public-sector hospital. The most recent series of collaborations have been carried out across the Western Cape, Free State and Limpopo provinces with a number of other provinces still being discussed. Operations included cataract, urology and tympanoplasty (eardrum repair) procedures. Another key aspect to the relationship between Mediclinic and Tygerberg Hospital will be the training element. A team of theatre staff including a scrub nurse, anaesthetist and fellow urology registrars will be included either in the theatre or as part of a live broadcast to the doctors.

stories that are life changing

February 2018

Da Vinci robotic surgery is being introduced as part of the ongoing relationship between Mediclinic and the Western Cape Department of Health. During the next few weeks, Mediclinic Durbanville together with urologist Dr Gawie Bruwer will be providing cutting edge prostate surgery to ten patients currently on Tygerberg Hospital’s urology waiting list. The life-saving prostatectomy surgeries are the latest in a sequence of collaborations between Mediclinic and a number of provincial health departments. The pro-bono procedures reduce the pressure on public surgical waiting lists at local and regional public hospital facilities. These procedures will also help broaden access to quality healthcare for many South Africans as part of a Private Public Initiative (PPI). Mediclinic’s participation is based on shared capacity and expertise between the private and public healthcare sectors, and is aimed at lightening the burden of long public surgery waiting lists. The unique aspect of the partnership at Mediclinic Durbanville is that it is the first time that the renowned da Vinci robot is being utilised as part of the collaborative surgery. Introduced to Mediclinic Durbanville several years ago, this robotic surgery has already provided some remarkable benefits to patient recovery. “The precision of the da Vinci aids the thorough removal of cancerous tissue as well as offering the ability to perform nerve sparing surgery, which enables a faster return of erectile function as well as a better chance for urinary continence. I firmly believe that this technology is giving patients the option of improved clinical outcomes that may not be possible with open surgery,” says Dr Bruwer.

Koert Pretorius, Chief Executive Officer of Mediclinic Southern Africa, “These collaborations are about far more than us alleviating long public sector waiting lists, it is about touching lives and - in this particular case – saving lives together. We acknowledge the severe shortage of doctors and nurses in our country and we understand how this can hamper the public sector’s ability to deliver care, but by working together in Public Private Initiatives we have the opportunity to reach beyond our traditional patient base and assist these patients.” “Mediclinic Durbanville is eager to translate this partnership into improved health outcomes for our community members. By providing access to the da Vinci machine we are not only relieving the waiting list but also using technology to benefit the patients’ recovery process,” states Christine Taylor, the Hospital General Manager of Mediclinic Durbanville.

Top 5 For Pearl Valley Golf Course At Val De Vie Estate Golf Digest announced that Pearl Valley, Val de Vie Estate’s Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course, has been ranked as the 5th best golf course in the country. The course was also ranked as the Best Conditioned Golf Course in the Western Cape. The biennial ‘Golf Digest Top 100 Courses in South Africa’ is one of the most influential rankings as far as golf in South Africa is concerned, and Val de Vie Estate takes great pride in the 2018/2019 top five placement. Two years ago, Pearl Valley was ranked at number 8 by Golf Digest, and this marked improvement is mostly attributed to Val de Vie Estate amalgamating with Pearl Valley Estate in 2016. “The potential of our Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course at Pearl Valley has been realised over the past two years. Recognition for our hard work from leading sporting publication Golf Digest is a great honour,” commented Ryk Neethling, Marketing Director and Shareholder of Val de Vie Estate. Damian Wrigley, Director of Golf at Pearl Valley, believes that the combination of operational restructuring and course conditioning resulted in moving up the ranks: “Some of the course changes implemented over the past two years included bunker reshaping and capillary lining on holes 3, 16 and 18, focusing on the consistency of the greens and surrounds as well as over seeding the rough. Operational changes included a full revamp of the Pearl Valley clubhouse, exceptional marketing of the golf course and working closely on a long term sustainable plan with the Jack Nicklaus Design Team in the USA.” “We congratulate our dedicated golf team, Pearl Valley Hotel by Mantis and the estate’s Home Owner’s Association for this achievement. The Drakenstein Municipality has been a great partner amidst the current dry conditions, and we thank them for the role they played. We are fortunate to be working with the dynamic Golf Data team who has been instrumental in the design and maintenance of the course and continued support from Franschhoek Tourism and Paarl Tourism is also greatly appreciated,” said Neethling.

As part of the greater Val de Vie Estate, the golf course is part of an unrivalled lifestyle offering in the heart of the Winelands. The estate has been rated by New World Wealth as the top residential estate in South Africa in 2015, 2016 and 2017. With the reputation as the safest estate in Africa, Val de Vie offers pristine polo fields, vineyards, world class equestrian facilities and lifestyle centres fitted with state of the art gym equipment. Neethling further added that “in sport, as in business, the real challenge is to stay at the top and to keep reinventing your offering.” Future plans for the course include reducing cutting corridor, coverage of bunkers and irrigation sprinklers. The design will remain on championship level and minor alterations will ensure that higher handicaps also enjoy the course.

“We Shape Our Cities, And Thereafter Our Cities Shape Us.” (Continue from Page 1) It is proposed that the market-related residential units be located in 11 new tower blocks with heights ranging between 63m, 123m, and 143m with views of the mountain, sea, and harbour. According to the proposal, the different heights and location of the towers will ensure that the iconic views of Table Mountain and the sea from the harbour and public spaces are retained. The new viaducts or fly-overs will be higher than the existing freeways. According to the proposal, this is to provide enough space, natural light and airflow for the development in the podiums. The proposed podiums beneath the highways will accommodate the bulk of the affordable residential units, parking bays, convenience and speciality shops, retail space, and community facilities. In this way, the space under the highways will be transformed into a lively urban environment.

The other sites that the qualifying bidder has identified as part of their proposed Foreshore Freeway Precinct development are the Ebenezer road maintenance depot; the MyCiTi Prestwich bus depot; the Gallows Hill traffic centre; and the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) parking garage. MDA also proposes to finance or cross-subsidise the new roads and affordable residential units through the development of upmarket and mid-market residential units. “Once developed, the precinct will reshape how we live, move, interact, and work in this area. It will also have a significant impact on how we enter and exit the CBD. This is a bold and innovative step by the City to find a sustainable and long-term solution to a number of challenges we are currently facing,” says Councillor Brett Heron, Mayoral Committee Member for Transport And Urban Development.

Part of the proposal is also to build another 10 residential buildings on the northern edge closest to the harbour under or between the existing east-bound freeways between DF Malan and Christiaan Barnard Streets. These buildings will host affordable residential units. Importantly, the qualifying bidder’s proposal is ecologically sensitive and addresses the impact of the development on the environment with water, energy, and lighting design solutions. Grey water recycling, rainwater harvesting, and water treatment systems are included, as are measures to mitigate the impact of high winds and noise. The build costs of the core development are estimated at R8,3 billion (2017 rand values), which includes the new highway infrastructure. The development is to be largely self-funding. It is anticipated that the building work could commence in 2020, subject to the successful completion of the Stage 2 process, and all mandatory property disposal, development and other statutory processes, and approvals. Given the scale of the proposed development, it will take at least a decade to come to fruition.

Table Mountain Cableway has donated state of the art technical equipment to Wilderness Search and Rescue which will significantly increase the safety, efficiency and speed of rescue operations and enable missions into areas where the terrain prevents the use of traditional pulley-based systems. Nic Le Maitre of Wilderness Search and Rescue said the world of technical rescue rigging was changing fast and as a public benefit organisation they greatly appreciated Cableway’s donation of a Harken Rigger and a Milwaukee Super Hawg Drill. “Using the new winch driven by the battery powered drill driver will increase safety and efficiency of rescue operations and will assist us with cliff based technical rescues where speed is of the essence or terrain prevents us from using our normal pulley-based systems,” said Le Maitre. “We estimate that we could reduce the time required for a rescue from around 45 minutes to 15 minutes in total.” Cableway Managing Director Wahida Parker, speaking at the equipment handover during the Cableway’s annual Supplier Function said: “We have always maintained a close relationship with Wilderness Search and Rescue, and will continue to assist them where we can. We hope this additional piece of equipment will make a pivotal difference to future rescue operations and the incredible work that Wilderness Search and Rescue do on a daily basis.” For more information visit www.tablemountain.net

SET YOUR BUSINESS FOR SUCCESS BY BRANDING FROM THE START!

Our approach is to equip our customers with success by providing a full functional website that is viewable on devices such as desktops, tablets and mobile phones. From one page websites to online shopping websites, we can design it. We can custom build your website to use features such as: registrations, login’s, bookings, and memberships.

A core part of being in business is creating and promoting your business as a brand. From our point of view there are so many small things that can be done to improve the brand of your business. Are you still using a Gmail address to do all your business? Get rid of it today! Small companies you do business with do not mind Gmail addresses, but when it comes to dealing with corporate companies, you need to provide the reassurance that you are serious about your business. The cost of a domain and hosting package is a small price to pay for securing potential business. Do you have a website that was designed a long time ago? Outdated websites negatively impact the viewers experience for many reasons: layouts that are not tablet and mobile friendly, images that are used as text, outdated scripts, content that has not been updated in a long time, and outdated scripts that make it easier for hacking websites. What would you rather have your potential customer see? With technology that has changed so much over the last decade, older websites that are unattended and not updated cause more harm to your brand than actually promoting it. If your website is not working the way it should, rather place the website “under maintenance” until you have decided to update or re-brand your website. What services do we offer? Designing - Web Rage uses the latest software in the design industry - with an eye on new trends and a passion for creativity. We can provide you with designing solutions from logos, business cards, brochures, catalogues, adverts, and books. Web Design - We make use of content management system (CMS) such as

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) - Web Rage will submit your website to all major search engines. Customers cannot find you on the web via search engines if your SEO structure is not setup properly. Having your social media platforms connected to your websites, makes it easier for customers to navigate to your business from platforms of their choosing. Coaching. Not Just For Sports. These pampered individuals and teams are somehow a little too stressed and exhausted as if it’s a blanket excuse for their lack of performance. Whilst this may very much be a relevant argument at times where is the similar outpouring of sympathy for the business owners, the entrepreneurs, businesses and employers. In those world’s there are no off seasons, no outside perspectives, multiple and ever changing rules of the game and sadly these same people do not have the benefit of decades of concentrated and singular training and coaching in one discipline. In those world’s the entrepreneurs, business owners and leaders are in fact expected to be ‘Jack of all trades and masters of many’. ActionCOACH business coaching, the World’s Number 1 Business Coaching Firm, has since 1993 ensured the same success catalyst for entrepreneurs and business owners as has been available to elite athletes. Now operating in over 70 countries and coaching in excess of 15,000 businesses per week they drive performance, sustainability and profitability across businesses the world over. No average athlete, nor sport’s team, would ever consider going for ‘gold’ without a coach. In fact, at the top of any sporting discipline, the reality is that the professionals have multiples coaches. Add to that the fact that every sports person has an off season, has hours and hours of training and preparation for limited and short bursts of execution, has the benefit of outside perspectives, video analysis, mental toughness training, stable rules, performance drivers, personal bests etc. “I’m surprised therefore that we often have sympathy for the professional athletes saying things like ‘Shame the Springboks (replace with Proteas, Stormers, Bafana Bafana and so on) are playing too much sport.’”

About to celebrate their 11th anniversary in Africa, ActionCOACH Southern Africa today has 47 full time business coaches driven to ensure you build a real business: ‘A Commercial Profitable Enterprise that Works Without You’. Cape Town Lowers Unemployment & Keeps Moody’s Credit Rating Cape Town’s growing employment is a testament to the City’s efforts to create an enabling environment for businesses to invest and to create new jobs. “I am pleased to reflect on the city’s encouraging economic results where 89 000 more Cape Town residents were employed in the fourth quarter of 2017 than during the same period in 2016. In addition, Cape Town has the lowest official unemployment rate, at 21,7%, of all the metros in South Africa,” says Executive Mayor, Patricia De Lille. The recent Quarterly Labour Force Survey 2017 for the fourth quarter, from 1 October to 31 December 2017, shows that Cape Town’s strict unemployment rate is far below the national strict unemployment rate of 26.7%. Cape Town’s job creation efforts continue to yield positive results as our unemployment rate is lower than all the other major cities including: eThekwini (21,9%), Tshwane (26.9%), Johannesburg (28.2%), Ekurhuleni (33.6%) and Nelson Mandela Bay (36.9%). Cape Town’s strict unemployment rate decreased by 1.5 percentage points from the previous quarter and decreased by 2.2 percentage points on a year-onyear basis. The city has the lowest expanded rate of all major cities. Cape Town’s expanded rate of unemployment (23,5%) is far below the national expanded rate (36,3%). Statistics South Africa’s figures show that the number of unemployed people in Cape Town has decreased on a quarter-on-quarter basis by 30 235. At present, 1 285 791 Capetonians are employed in the formal sector while 170 089 are employed in the informal sector. Encouragingly, this is the sixth consecutive quarter that the employment level in the city has increased. During the last three months of 2017, the City’s funding to Wesgro and industry bodies such as the Business Process Enabling South Africa (BPeSA) and GreenCape facilitated R1,3 billion in investments. These investments created 1 370 jobs in the business process out-sourcing, ICT, manufacturing and renewable energy sectors. The City’s Enterprise and Investment Department works closely with

Wesgro, BPeSA Western Cape and Green Cape to promote trade and grow a more inclusive economy. It is important to note that the City of Cape Town works with the private sector and investors to grow our economy. It is not only government’s role to create jobs but we have a keen understanding that we must create the conditions conducive to economic growth and support those sectors which are showing the most growth. Finally, in more good news, Moody’s kept the City of Cape Town’s good global and national scale credit ratings at Baa3/Prime-3 and Aaa.za/Prime-1.za, respectively. The credit rating agency commended the City’s ‘stable financial performance,’ which is supported by a large diversified economic base. The agency did note that the City’s global scale rating is currently on review for a possible downgrade due to the national sovereign rating also being on review. Despite challenges, with these results Cape Town has shown that we are a resilient city, and that we are committed to good governance and creating opportunities for all.

Crowdfunding and its Role in the Future of Business Crowdfunding started gaining real traction around five years ago and has grown exponentially since then: It is estimated that 2017 will have seen US$34 billion raised globally. According to data analysed by Cowgill Holloway, ‘crowdfunding’ is the most frequently searched term relating to business funding in the UK. The industry is set to be valued more than $93 billion by 2025. South African rewardsbased campaigns by SA rock band Fokofpolisiekar, and Sugarbird Gin both raised over R1 million in 2017. A note of caution though, although it provides businesses with amazing funding opportunities, Crowdfunding is not as easy as it sounds. There are many projects that fail to raise funds. There’s no way of guaranteeing crowdfunding success, but by studying the projects, strategies, and crowdfunding secrets that have worked for others, you can certainly maximize your chances. Two Western Cape entrepreneurs have raised over R200 000 towards achieving their dream of opening their own wine bar, Proof, in Somerset West.

One of the success insights shared by Rob Heyns of Sugerbird Gin: “The power of a good story and leading with purpose and mission”

Rather than calling on investors to provide seed funding, or taking out a bank loan - Dan Crowe and Wayne Mongie, made the decision to reach out to their network of friends, family and strangers by launching a fundraising campaign with Thundafund, a South African crowdfunding platform.

No one will write about, read about and let alone support your project if it is the same-same and has no impact. Working from a place of purpose gives meaning and direction to the internal team and can inspire customers to become supporters, advocates and ambassadors. This inspirational clarity has the great side-effect of piquing the interest of media as well.

Crowdfunding is one of the newest forms of raising capital. Essentially, it’s using investments from friends and family, but on a global scale. Instead of being able to call on only your close community, the entire internet network becomes a potential community of supporters to your start-up, cause or passion project. Human collaboration enabled by Technology!

Like any other business venture, crowdfunding is an iterative process that starts long before the doors are opened, and continues long after the campaign has closed. For more information visit www.businesstrends.co.za

EDUCATION

New Era For Teaching

Stem Focussed Toys

& Learning At Stellenbosch University

Boost Kids Performance In The Classroom Parents looking to boost their kids’ performance in the classroom are turning to the latest skill-building educational toys. From programmable robots to code-teaching caterpillars and colourful chemistry kits, South Africa’s leading toy retail chain Toys R Us, are the latest stockists of popular STEM toys. Known to encourage skills development in core disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, these toys applies to learning and activities that focus on logic, problem-solving, creativity and experimentation. “Toys R Us STEM toys are all about promoting learning through fun. With children having so much access to screens and devices these days, it’s important that STEM toys be introduced as an alternative. Kids can still have fun but they will be learning at the same time,” says Nicole Annells, marketing manager Toys R Us & Babies R Us South Africa.

“A university is a place where dreams are pursued and realised. Every year, thousands of students come to us with big dreams for themselves, their families and the broader community. Our role is to welcome those students and, through higher education, help them achieve their dreams. To this end, we need well-equipped buildings in which excellent learning and teaching can take place. We need smart buildings, green buildings, buildings of the future,” says Prof Wim de Villiers, Rector and Vice-Chancellor of Stellenbosch University (SU). “Despite great advances in information and communication technology, there is still a need for human interaction. Personal interaction between lecturer and student as well as between students from different backgrounds remains essential when it comes to learning together and from one another. And for that, one needs suitable buildings.” De Villiers explained.

Annells added that toys like erector sets and chemistry sets do much more than keep kids busy. “They enforce the necessary science, technology, engineering, and mathematics skills children will need in the future. STEM games, such as chess; puzzles; and logic games, provide hands-on learning that fosters critical thinking skills. Our stores are filled with many quality products made from trusted brands in the industry,” she said. Research has shown that a STEM education gives children the edge in becoming economic and technological leaders of the global marketplace. It is never too early to set your child on the path to an educated future. Annells says that in the months ahead, Toys R Us plans to further build on its science and engineering offerings, adding that parents enjoyed the increased play value that came with these toys.

The new building that will rise on this site will create the capacity to make the University even more accessible. Nestled between the Langenhoven student centre and the Polymer Science building, the Jan Mouton Learning Centre will have a low-carbon footprint, including a greywater system that will serve the ablutions. The infrastructure will be readied for a future photovoltaic roof panel installation, while rain and groundwater will be harvested and stored. The centre will boast an atrium and terraced seating that will create light and flow, providing a welcoming place for students while they tackle the latest theories and concepts. Group-work classrooms respectively seating 350, 270 and 150 will provide the flexibility for lecturers and students to adapt their environment to facilitate discussion and teamwork. Triple-volume circulation spaces dotted with pause areas for interaction will connect the auditorium and computer classrooms. This will minimise congestion and promote an effective learning and teaching space. A gather-and-share communal space adjacent to the main rooms will accommodate breakaway discussions and peer-to-peer interaction. An undercover walkway will link the centre with other campus buildings, and a restaurant will offer meals to keep students sustained and eager to learn. Work on the centre, which will accommodate more students than any other current teaching space on campus, started in October 2017 and is set to be completed towards the end of 2019.

In addition, a wide variety of skills and traits are built when playing with STEM toys. These include: problem solving; cognitive development; engagement; overcoming challenges; teamwork; cooperation and patience. Durban-based occupational therapist, Amy Engelbrecht says she was very excited about the upcoming release of these educational toys. “As an occupational therapist, I know children learn best through playing games and having fun. The dawn of the age of the ‘ipad’ and screens have caused the decline in play based learning as well as their fine and gross motor skills. In my experience, children’s skills improve a great deal when physically playing with various toys and games,” said Engelbrecht.

Drought Dries Up School Feeding The current drought and resulting water crisis have started to impact school children in a very direct way; their school feeding. Instead of their usual hot cooked meal for lunch, over 25 000 youth in over 140 primary, high schools and tertiary educational institutions are now receiving a sandwich for their lunchtime meal. Level 6B water restrictions were implemented on 1 February, limiting Cape Town water users to only 50 liters each. This necessitated Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) to be pro-active and reduce the usage of water for their cooking. For the past few months schools in the Cape Peninsula have experienced water interruptions which resulted in preparers being unable to access water for cooking of school meals. This further impacted on the stock piling of ingredients like samp, beans, rice and soya mince. These ingredients are used in the daily menus which included meals such as fish, rice and butternut or samp and beans with fresh fruit. About a decade ago PSFA developed a cooked menu with the assistance of nutritional experts from the Department of Education to provide for 30% of a child’s daily recommended dietary intake (RDI) of nutrients. “While we cannot match the balanced nutrition of the cooked meal, we adapted our new ‘dry’ lunch menu to include as much nutritional value as possible,” explains Amelia Koeries, operations manager of PSFA. “We have sourced a baker to especially bake a brown bread for us. This will be served with toppings such baked beans, alternated with pilchards, high in omega oils.” PSFA has been keeping a watchful eye on the serious water crisis in the Western Cape. “We have done our research on how much water it takes to prepare our meals in schools and have come to realise that over 200 000 litres are used monthly in the preparation of lunch meals in the 147 schools on the PSFA scheme alone,” says Petrina Pakoe director of the association. PSFA is, however, also the service provider under tender for the Western Cape’s department of education to provide school feeding in a further 459 schools and educational institutions as well as 54 early childhood development centres (EDCs).

Although their water-less lunch menu is saving water, PSFA is not serving a waterless menu as it is continuing with a cooked fortified maize-meal porridge served for breakfast. “We are certainly using ‘less water’ in our ‘water-less’ menu, but PSFA needs to remain true to its objective - to reduce short-term hunger. We have to make sure that no child is going hungry during this drought as you can’t teach a hungry child,” concludes Pakoe. PSFA has been feeding school children since 1958 and is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2018. They feed over 290 000 children daily. Apart from the 25 000, also some 260 000 youth are fed as part of the tender, providing meals to selected schools and learners under a quintile system. The schools or learners falling outside the quintile system for the tender are fed with fundraising efforts from PSFA, including the annual Blisters for Bread fun run as well as donations from individuals and companies.

Stronger currency

makes a Plan B in Europe cheaper! Acquiring a 2nd citizenship or permanent residency is very appealing to many South Africans. The main reason is to implement a Plan B to assure the family’s future by protecting against political risk and economical instability. Europe is still the preferred destination due to being the world’s largest single market & global trading block; as well as the lifestyle aspects and business / work opportunities on offer. But up until recently, the weak ZAR has made investing in Europe almost unattainable. The recent strengthening of the ZAR against the EURO has made securing a Plan B in Europe affordable. When comparing last year’s high of R16.98 to this year’s low of R14.40 – securing permanent residency in Cyprus is now R775,000 cheaper; and acquiring a 2nd citizenship is now a whopping R5,1Million cheaper! Having a 2nd citizenship in Europe gives unlimited access to the EU & the UK. Chief benefits include travelling, living, working & studying anywhere in the European Economic Area; plus visa-free travel to many countries. Permanent residency is also attractive because it gives the permit holders the legal right to live in that country without having to go through an onerous immigration process should they wish to make a permanent move. Cyprus, an English-speaking, ex-British colony and full EU member currently has the most attractive 2nd citizenship and permanent residency programmes available. Citizenship is granted in 3 months via Cyprus’ “Citizenship through investment” programme: - It’s the quickest process in Europe;

Permanent residency is granted in 4 – 6 weeks on the “Fast Track” programme. - this is the only programme in Europe where 3 generations in the same family (including both the parents & in-laws) all acquire residency by buying one property!

- all dependent children up to age 28 and the parents of the investor qualify; - it’s an investment – not a donation;

- dependent children up to 25 qualify;

- the property/ies CAN be rented out; and need to be retained for only 3 years; - citizenship is passed down through descent offering a legacy to future generations.

- the property can be rented out; - there is no requirement to live in Cyprus; nor be domiciled there for tax.

- minimum property investment is €2Million.

Some lifestyle attractions that Cyprus offers are: - Euro-accredited education gives your children an advantage when they enter the global job market; - low cost but high standard of living;

Can you afford not to take advantage of this while both programmes are still open; and also while the ZAR is still relatively strong? Cypriot Realty – a proudly South African company in operation since 2008 with offices in Cape Town, Sandton and Cyprus – can assist you.

We are recognised and respected as Southern Africa's authoritative offshore investment specialists, promoting Cyprus as an ideal destination for acquiring EU - 1st world medical facilities & affordable healthcare with highly qualified doctors citizenship or permanent residency, property investment, immigration or retirement & specialists. and starting an EU-based business - we understand investor's needs. - Europe on your doorstep;

An astute offshore property investment that works for the short, medium and long term is the achievement of a lifetime. In Cyprus investing in the “Citizenship through Investment” or the “Fast Track residency” programme not only makes financial sense, but it will tangibly benefit your family for generations to come.

Onderkloof Estate is one of the world’s quaintest wine farms. Situated in the historical Stellenbosch wine region, the Onderkloof vineyards overlooks False Bay while embraced by the Hottentots Holland mountains. Hence the name Onderkloof which means “below the valley”. This dates from the 18th century when Dutch governor of the Cape Willem Adriaan van der Stel’s sheep grazed here. In the 1990’s Beat Musfeld, a Swiss Project Manager, visited South Africa and fell in love with the country. His lifelong passion for fine wine inspired him to acquire Onderkloof. After grapes had been produced here for decades, Onderkloof bottled its first vintage in the new cellar in 1999. In 2012 the owner’s son, Yves Musfeld, became Onderkloof’s winemaker. Yves studied viticulture and oenology at Geisenheim University, Germany, did his apprenticeship in Switzerland and was assistant winemaker at Casa Lo Alto, Spain and Clos Du Val, Napa Valley before taking the reins at Onderkloof. Yves’ world class winemaking experience, Swiss perfectionism and elegant European instincts produces some of the finest modern classics. Today Onderkloof prides itself in a list of award winning wines: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, the Sir Lowry Red Blend, Sauvignon Blanc, Floreal Blanc de Blanc, Chardonnay and Rosé. In 2017 Onderkloof Cabernet Franc was voted South Africa’s Best Value Red out of 1 700 wines by esteemed Master of Wine and international wine journalist, Tim Atkin. From a young age, Carmen had a huge sweet tooth and never wanted to eat her food. Having a passion for baking and, especially pastry, is a understatement. She took consumer studies at school and she just knew that she wanted to be a pastry chef. “I can’t imagine doing anything else. Pastry is not just my job, but my hobby as well.” In 2015, after graduating from The Private Hotel School, she started her internship at The Tasting Room in Franschhoek where she worked for a year and learned from the head chef, Gerald van der Wald. Cape Town’s New Drought-Edition Gin

If you enjoy a double Gin & Tonic, just pour yourself a single! Inspired by the impending Day Zero, local distiller Andre Pienaar of Pienaar and Son has announced that the brand will be releasing a Drought Edition version of each of its classic gins. The concept is a simple one: in the production process, gin comes off the still at a strength of around 80% alcohol. Approximately 200 litres of water is added per batch to dilute this gin to a drinking strength of 43% alcohol. Thanks to the drought, Pienaar & Son has decided to skip this step with a Drought Edition gin, simply bottling it at the initial phase with 80% alcohol. “It started to seem quite silly when we were trying everything we could to save water in the distillery, that we were diluting gin only to see most of our customers pour double G&Ts. It seemed so pointless. Over half a bottle spirit at 43% alcohol is water. It’s not adding any flavour. It’s just diluting the alcohol to a sipping strength, and I imagine only a tiny portion of gin drinkers are enjoying it neat,” says Master Distiller: Andre Pienaar. The goal of releasing this Drought Edition Gin is to remind people of all the small steps we can all take to become better at saving water. Starting and continuing conversations that don’t revolve around finger pointing, but personal responsibility. “I am well aware of the fact that our industry uses a lot of water and maybe the water saved through this initiative will hardly make a dent, but thats not the point. The point is that no one, and no business is exempt from trying to make a difference in this difficult time. No matter how big or how small,” says Andre Pienaar. The Drought Edition gin will be available at any good bottle store or online. So you can sip on your gin free of water-related guilt.

Assist Paralympian Goldy Fuchs to Reach His goals! Rio Paralympian Goldy Fuchs more than lived up to his name when he rode to double gold at the SA Road and Time Trial Championships held in Oudtshoorn recently, winning both the Time Trial and Road Race for the second year in a row and retaining the SA Champ jersey. Twenty-six-year-old Fuchs from Cape Town, racing in the T2 (tricycle - classified as an asymmetrical quadriplegic) classification tackled the 14.6km Time Trial course and clocked 26min 28.353sec to beat London 2012 Paralympian Gerhard Viljoen into runners-up spot. After having annexed the time trial earlier in the week, Fuchs was in action on the road race, held over two laps of 14.6 kilometres. He went on to win the T2 category in a time of 55min 25sec in a repeat of the time trial position. Background: At the age of 5 months, Goldy Fuchs sustained serious head injuries during a motor car accident in which he lost his father. As a result of his injuries, the strength of both his right arm and left leg is poor and creates an imbalance. Goldy started cycling during 2003 at the age of 12 years and achieved Provincial colours for cycling, swimming and athletics. Representing his province, he set national records and won numerous gold medals at the Nedbank National Championships, organized by the SA Sports Association for the Physically Disabled (SASAPD). In 2010, while a junior cyclist, Goldy decided to participate in the Senior T2 category and won the Time Trial and Road Race at the SA National Championships against much older competitors. Since then, Fuchs who has won 10 medals at international level, represented South Africa internationally in thirteen UCI Paracycling Road World Cup events, four Para-cycling Road World Championships and the Paralympics, only has his mother Janine Fuchs as his support structure. Goldy who has been cycling at international level since 2010 says there isn’t enough corporate sponsors supporting para-athletes. His biggest dream is to win the World Championships and to medal at the 2020 Tokyo Para-Olympics, but with no support, this will always be a huge challenge for him to achieve, participating in

a very competitive class with competitors getting full support form their countries. “The UCI points system, to allocate slots for the 2020 Tokyo Para-Olympics, starts from this year and if we cannot get Goldy to participate in UCI events for the next two years, there will be no points to be allocated in order to participate in the Games,” says Janine Fuchs. Goldy’s focus is on the two UCI Para-cycling Road World Cups to be held in Belgium (3 - 6 May 2018) and the Netherlands (6 - 8 July 2018) and hopefully the World Championships in Maniago, Italy from 2 - 5 August 2018. “As Cycling SA has a self-funding policy in place, I need to pay for all my expenses in order to participate in Europe during 2018. All donations will directly help me fund my fees for International competitions. By contributing you will help me reach my goals, but you will also take part in my journey of becoming a gold medallist,” Goldy concluded. For more information contact Janine Fuchs at 082 4000 232

How do ballet dancers measure up to other athletes? Ballet dancers are typically known for their grace, poise, and dedication – but professional dancers are often fitter and stronger than other traditional athletes.

ined measures of fitness including strength, balance, endurance, flexibility and psychological state.

A study conducted by the University of Hertfordshire found that the overall fitness of ballet dancers surpasses that of international swimmers.

Of these measures, the ballet dancers scored higher in seven of the 10 most important ones, when taking into account body size. One of those measures included grip strength – which in ballet dancers was 25% higher.

The study compared members of the Royal Ballet and a squad of swimmers, including members of the Olympic team, and looked at a range of tests that exam-

A separate study, published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, pitted ballet dancers against team athletes to measure the lower-body endurance of each group. For the study, 40 ballet dancers and 40 team athletes performed an initial test of jumping onto one leg from a 30-centimetre high platform. They then performed repetitions of step-ups and jumps to build fatigue, before jumping off the platform again. The ballet dancers took significantly longer than the team athletes to become fatigued, the study found. And in terms of muscle groups, it’s not just the legs that require focus. Ballet dancers rely on their back and core muscles to provide stability, and keep those muscles engaged throughout every movement – whether it’s at the barre or on the stage. To see some of the country’s top ballet dancers on stage, book your tickets at Computicket to see the Cape Town City Ballet’s performance of Romeo and Juliet at Oude Libertas in March.
