Two meerkats at the Cango Wildlife Ranch in Oudtshoorn have become proud parents to not one, but four adorable pups after an arranged courtship. It has been a while since the squeaks of new-borns have had the Cango staff, especially animal-keepers, buzzing! Although the Zoological team had their suspicions that Macy, a 2 year old Slender Tailed Meerkat, might be ‘expecting’ - no one and nothing could prepare the team for the heart-melting, knee-rattling and jaw-dropping level of cuteness that was about to be experienced.

Companies making up the strong long-list were scrutinised by judges on the lookout for a meaningful engagement with economically poor, socially excluded and marginalised local people through employment opportunities and community interventions. The nominees were expected to go above and beyond the legal requirements in relation to wages, working conditions and skills development and be working with local producers to facilitate and grow their participation in the supply chain. The award recognises that not only does Spier’s entry-level wages far exceed the industry-regulated minimum wages – they also have a comprehensive array of initiatives to tackle youth employment and enhance the wellbeing, skills and development of their staff.

GROWTH OF WINE TOURISM IN THE WC
WELLNESS Page 9
Key findings from the respondent’s answers show that wine tourism in the Western Cape has grown by 16% between 2016 and 2017. This is further evidenced by tour operators indicating that 99% of Cape Town-based itineraries include a trip to the Winelands. Continue Reading Page 4

Le Clos, a four-time Olympic medallist, says: “I’m very pleased that we are launching the first branch of the Chad le Clos Academy. I really want to see the growth of swimming as a sport, both in SA and ultimately across the world, by helping existing swimmers improve and encouraging beginners to learn our sport and develop life skills. This has been a dream of mine for some time, and today marks the start of what I hope will be a long and productive journey.”
The superstar swimmer has bagged a total of 17 gold medals throughout his career, earning three at this year’s Commonwealth Games. At the tender age of 18 years, he already held two senior South African records, as well as Commonwealth junior and senior records.

Future venues will also implement elite and learn to swim programmes by collaborating with the best in class partners and facilities, as the programme expands. As part of its long-term goals, the CLeC Academy plans to expand further by including international venues, in an attempt to broaden its reach as widely as possible and transform the world of swimming.
Background: Le Clos himself began swimming competitively at the age of ten, and had already made the senior Olympic swimming squad by the time he was 14. In January, Le Clos moved to Cape Town from his native Durban, and made announcement that he would begin the process of finding an appropriate swimming pool to launch his elite academy.
City Digs In Smartly To Install Fibre-Optic Cabling The City of Cape Town is making use of novel technology known as microtrenching to install fibre-optic cable ducts in the Cape Town central business district (CBD). These high-tech machines, being used as part of a pilot project within a four block radius in the CBD, are a faster and cheaper way of installing fibre-optic cables with minimal disruptions. The advantage of micro-trenching is that a considerably longer distance can be cut and reinstated in a single day than most other invasive technologies. Instead of hand-digging up the road or pavement surface, the micro trencher saws through the asphalt or concrete creating a trench of typically 50mm in width and about 500mm deep. The City’s requirement is for a trench depth of 300mm. This novel, high-tech cable duct laying technology is being used as part of a pilot project within the four block radius in the CBD along Wale, Loop, Berg and Longmarket Streets. “At some stage most of us have experienced the disruptions caused by large trenches being dug to lay fibre-optic cables.”
The study aims to determine sector trends and identify changing market conditions in the wine tourism industry in South Africa.
Starting with a flagship venue at the Quadrant in Cape Town, the programme will focus on stroke development and fitness for swimmers aged five through to adults.
Chad le Clos board member, Julian Taylor, says: “As South Africa’s most decorated swimmer, Chad le Clos has already ensured he will always be remembered as an icon. Hopefully this academy will be able to play another key role in expanding his legacy at all levels of the sport, both at home and abroad.”
RETIREMENT Page 7
In 2017, Wesgro, in partnership with Explore Sideways, conducted the second annual Wine & Food Tourism Study in the Western Cape. The study surveyed more than 40 South African tour operators, accounting for over 19,000 itineraries booked over the year.
Taking a rounded approach to development, the new Chad le Clos Academy aims to transform the way swimming is taught in South Africa, from beginner through to elite level and aim to ensure that swimmers enjoy the learning experience and remain in the sport for as long as possible.

Acclaim For Spier At Responsible Tourism Awards (Continue from page 1) Pinotage Youth Development Academy: Practical work experience is provided at Spier in various aspects of the business in this programme, which seeks to educate and employ disadvantaged youth in the wine industry. Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator: Spier recruit entry-level staff through Harambee, an initiative which sources, trains and places unemployed young people from disadvantaged backgrounds into their first jobs. Training: This year the annual training budget will be equivalent to 6% of annual salaries. In addition to jobrelated training, various programmes empower staff with skills, leadership and personal growth that extends well beyond required competencies. Individual Learning Spend: Each employee receives an allocation to spend on their personal development. The stipend can be spent on anything that will empower the staff with skills and knowledge, boost health and wellbeing, foster financial wellness or enhance self-awareness and self-knowledge. Certain staff members may use this money to help pay for their children’s school fees. Clinic: Open five days a week, the staff clinic dispenses medication for free. Employees also have access to a social worker.
Western Cape Tree-preneurs have grown 50 000 indigenous trees since the project began in the province.
By December 2017, 82% of Spier staff were living within a 30km radius of the farm – demonstrating our commitment to local employment – while more than 50% of entry level positions have been filled by first-time work entrants or vulnerable adults.
The 2018 African Responsible Tourism Awards also awarded silver to Spier for Best for Global Goals Reporting. This is a new category which measures all entries against identified goals.
Spier’s impact in the wider community is visible through our support of Tree-preneurs – a project which has seen more than 190 people from some of the Cape’s poorest communities taught how to care for indigenous plants. They are given seedlings to nurture; once these have reached 30cm, they can be exchanged for livelihood support items such as food vouchers, clothing, tools and bicycles.
This is not the first time Spier has been recognised as an ethical employer. In 2003, the hotel was one of the first in South Africa to be awarded the Fair Trade in Tourism accreditation. In 2016, they were also awarded gold at the African Responsible Tourism Awards in the category of Best for Accommodation for Responsible Employment.
Wild Rescue A Rehabilitation Facility And Sanctuary For Wildlife On 19 April 2018 a group of passionate people held a fundraising auction in Cape Town in aid of 'Wild Rescue,' - a new rehabilitation facility with a clinic, and a sanctuary for animals that have been injured and rescued from the wild. The auction was conducted by the well-known auctioneer Joey Burke.
Gill Simpson of Riversdale has a passion and complete love for all types of animals especially wildlife and in particular primates. Her desire to save the many animals that are injured by road accidents, poisoning and traps or deliberate human actions, has led to the creation and birth of a wonderful organisation called “Wild Rescue”. Wild Rescue’s vision is to be a wildlife sanctuary and rehabilitation centre with a high standard of care, compassion and ethics, an asset to the Western Cape, working for the long-term sustainability of all wildlife and biodiversity. Situated 28 kilometres from Riversdale this 165 hectares of stunning land is the perfect spot for such a beautiful cause and to provide a sanctuary for rescued animals. Wild Rescue have planned a centre to provide rehabilitation and a semi natural environment for them to live in, if they cannot be released into the wild and plan to provide education on the importance of respect and compassion for all sentient beings, the environment and habitats. Wild Rescue are also preserving the vulnerable and endangered eco zones and plant species on the nature reserve. By working with other organisations for the common long-term good for all they will provide educational facilities and set an example for compassionate and sustainable living practices. The first of their projects is to build enclosures for the rescued animals and to equip the veterinary clinic that is already in the process of being completed. 5 Fingers For Marseilles And Nommer 37 Attract International Attention The South African film production landscape continues to set new standards with Five Fingers for Marseilles and Nommer 37 attracting international acclaim. The national release of Cape Town based Michael Matthews’ Five Fingers for Marseilles was held recently. The action packed thriller has attracted the attention of the United States with the film scheduled to feature in New York and Los Angeles’ cinemas from 7 September 2018, before moving to an additional 15 American cities. Five Fingers for Marseilles has also secured releases in Japan and Scandinavia with the production schedule to be available on Amazon Prime, Amazons exclusive streaming video on demand service. Dubbed as South Africa’s first Western, the witty screenplay is acted out in Sesotho, with English subtitles available for translation.
The story revolves around a group of young men (the ‘Five Fingers’) who stand up to brutal police oppression in Marseilles, a town in the Eastern Cape. After fleeing in disgrace, freedom-fighter-turned-‘outlaw’ Tau returns to Marseilles seeking a peaceful life. Upon return he finds out the town is under a new threat, prompting him to reform the Five Fingers to take on old allies and new enemies. A particularly noteworthy performance comes from Hamilton Dlamini, who is known for his role as Mnqobi Simelane in the e.tv series Umlilo. Dlamini portrays a haunting character named Sepoko, the cruel and volatile ringleader of a gang. Other well know actors include Generations star, Vuyo Dabula, who successfully plays the part as the hero Tau. Similarly, Nommer 37, written and directed by local sensation, Nosipho Dumisa, celebrated its World Premiere last month at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival in Austin, Texas. The Crime Thriller takes its scene in Cape Town’s Cape Flats with Irshaad Ally starring as Randall, a criminal crippled by an injury sustained in a drug deal. Confined to his apartment and wheelchair bound, Randall’s girlfriend Pam (played by local actress Monique Rockman) gifts him a pair of binoculars. Intended to help Randall pass the time, the binoculars become a pivotal tool in helping Randall hatch a plan to come up with the money he desperately needs to pay back a vicious loan shark named Emmie (Danny Ross). A gripping narrative of desperation, love and greed, Dumisa masterfully produces her own take on Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 classic Rear Window.

Wesgro’s Head of Film and Media Promotion, Monica Rorvik, commented: “It makes us proud that locally produced films are able to premier at leading festivals such as at Toronto’s TIFF & Austin’s SXSW. This shows us that local creatives have earned their rightful place on the global stage.”
A Love Story With A Happy Ending (Continue from page 1) The last time that Cango Wildlife Ranch had the privilege of welcoming baby meerkats was in 2006 – a staggering 12 years ago! The facility houses an amazing little meerkat colony, all of whom were either rescued or removed/donated stemming from the illegal pet-trade. The facility spends a phenomenal amount of time and effort to integrate the individuals as they can be quite picky about their ‘family’. Patience and skill makes this possible and Cango becomes their forever-home as release is simply not possible with animals that have been human imprinted to this extent. At the end of 2017, a visitor brought Macy to the facility for care. She was raised and kept by humans, which meant she would never be able to be released back into the wild.
Having heard somewhere that Cango Wildlife Ranch was looking for a friend for a lone male, they knew it would be the perfect home for her. The pair instantly gravitated to each other and little did they know that it was the start of a love story. Macy gave birth to 4 incredibly gorgeous and healthy pups on 22 February 2018. Meerkats are pregnant for up to 77 days and usually give birth from one to eight babies at a time. Meerkat homes are usually called burrows and consist of intricate tunnel systems which can have as many as 15 entrance and exit holes. The pups, are born underground, safely hidden away from predators and other threats. Macy nursed her babies in the den area where they were warm and concealed whilst kindly allowing routine health inspections from the Zoological team. What makes meerkats unique amongst other burrowing creatures, is that they tend to have a few burrows in rotation. This means that they offer up and leave one burrow for another, which the Cango Wildlife Ranch staff have witnessed dominant female Macy and her family doing. In human context they can be referred to as phenomenal property investors!
Photo: Baby Meerkats - Photo Credit: Cango Wildlife Ranch, Oudtshoorn
According to San Diego Zoo, new-borns weigh between 25 – 36 grams – similar to the weight of a tablespoon of sugar! They are doing really well and as per their natural behaviour, the whole colony, consisting of adults Macy, Dusk and Scout, is pitching in to help raise the babies. Mom Macy will most probably nurse them for up to 9 weeks, after which they will start their ‘Meerkat Academy for foraging’. A typical meerkat day starts with grooming or basking in the morning sun. During the rest of the day they forage for food, always having one meerkat on security duty. They are so well organised that security duty rotates every hour to allow everyone the opportunity to forage. Their diet mostly consists of lizards, birds, bugs and fruit and in the wild they even like to treat themselves to an odd scorpion here or there. Amazingly, adult meerkats have some immunity to the venom! Cango Wildlife Ranch is accredited by the Pan-Africa Association of Zoo’s and Aquaria, and members of the World Association, maintain incredible standards of animal care whilst fulfilling their main mission to Conserve, Care and Connect. The dedicated staff educate the public the species housed, the plights that they face as well as various environmental issues and more, 365 days of the year. The four pups can be seen in the meerkat enclosure right next to the snake park at Cango Wildlife Ranch’s. They are up for adoption via our non-profit organisation the Cheetah Preservation Foundation by anyone who wants to invest in their well-being and future.

YOUR HIGH-END SMARTPHONE
TOWNSHIP WOMAN’S ROOIBOS
MAY BE INADEQUATELY INSURED
TEA BAG PURSES SOLD IN PARIS
With expensive, high-end technology such as tablets and smartphones more popular than ever before, South African consumers may be blissfully unaware that their favourite electronic devices are grossly underinsured – only realising too late when they claim for theft or damage.
Gracious Dube (33) from Hout Bay has always had an eye for fashion, but never did she think her handmade purses from Rooibos tea bags would one day be sold as a hot fashion accessory in Paris – the fashion capital of the world.
This is according to Dawie Loots, CEO of MUA Insurance Acceptance, who notes that the recent launches of luxury smartphone devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S9 and iPhone X, priced at around R15 499 and R20 499 respectively, shows that there is a growing global demand for the adoption of high-end devices. “This popularity trend is sure to continue locally and, due to the high cost of these luxury devices, it is vital for consumers to insure their technology against theft or damages to safeguard themselves financially.”
Growing up in Harare, a career as an artist wasn’t encouraged by her parents, but when she moved to South Africa and got involved with Original T-Bag Designs in 2006, her creativity took flight. Original T-Bag Designs is a company that started out as a social responsibility project by founder, Jill Heyes to help impoverished women from Imizamo Yethu to earn money by making unique arts and crafts from tea bags and boxes. Heyes, a former art teacher trained Dube in various art mediums and encouraged her to trial new product ideas as a way to boost her income. Whilst holidaying in South Africa, French fashion designer, Carine Khalil who focuses on upcycling products was intrigued by Dube’s eye-catching tea bag purses, which she spotted at the V&A Waterfront. Kahlil has since worked with Dube on recreating her Rooibos purse for the Paris market, which sells at Ithemba Design Ethik – a top fashion and decor boutique – owned by Kahlil. Dube says the experience of working with Khalil has been awe-inspiring. To make her fashionable purses, which are lined with silk, Dube starts off by drying and ironing about 45 to 50 Rooibos tea bags. Once done, the tea bags are varnished and either glued or carefully stitched onto the silk.
“It is also important for consumers to know that there are different options to keep in mind when choosing cover for a luxury or high-end device, and make sure that they fully understand the terms of their particular cover.” Loots explains that consumers should start by determining whether their insurer will cover the device on an unspecified basis, or whether the device needs to be specified at an additional cost. “Including one’s device on an unspecified basis can be the most cost-effective option, but it is important to keep in mind that the insurer might impose certain limits in the event of a claim. For example, the policyholder might only be able to claim a specified percentage of the total cost for any one item. It is not uncommon to only be able to claim 25% of the value that you are insured for on an unspecified basis for any one item.” He adds that a policyholder also needs to understand whether a device is covered under an indemnity or replacement policy. “An indemnity policy will repay the client the purchase value of the device in cash. A replacement policy may be the better choice in certain circumstances. If the retail price of the covered device increases, or if the device becomes obsolete and needs to be replaced with a newer model, the insurer will then pay the amount required to buy a new device at the current retail value.” Loots says that proper risk management is always important. “An insurer will want to know that the policyholder did everything in his or her power to avoid losing the insured device. With this in mind, keep the device on you as much as possible, do not leave it in plain sight when using it in public spaces and never leave the item in clear view in an unoccupied vehicle. It can also count in your favour if you use a phone cover and screen protector to minimise the risk of damage.” Lastly, Loots points out that receiving the right advice about which policy to choose, can prove to be incredibly valuable. “Having to replace a R15 000 or R20 000 device out of one’s own pocket is a major loss, and consulting a knowledgeable broker on the available insurance options, may prove to be one of the best financial choices that one can make,” Loots concludes.
Some purses are also decoratively painted to add to the unique look. Kahlil has also commissioned Dube to make a lampshade and basket from Rooibos tea bags, which are equally big sellers. “Funds generated from my designs have helped me to secure a flat in Hout Bay where I live with my 11-year-old son, Dion and my mom.” ‟I’ve always believed in the power of education and am now able to pay for him to go to a good school that will open doors for him. From a business perspective, Heyes has also taught me the basic principles of marketing such as pricing a product right, knowing what products customers want and to never compromise on quality,” says Dube. “It’s wonderful to see how artists the world-over are incorporating rooibos tea bags, leaves and even boxes in their art. It’s also a great way to upcycle and gives rooibos tea bags a second life.” ‟The concept of painting on or using tea bags in fashion is truly unique and forces artists to work on a canvas that isn’t blank, but is instead imprinted with odd colours and textures. The creative possibilities are endless,” says Anele du Toit spokesperson for the SA Rooibos Council. Like Dube, other artists from Original T-Bag Designs also use recycled tea bags that are donated by tea-lovers from all over the world to make anything from animal sculptures to gift cards, trays, notebooks, dolls, soap, fridge magnets, and other décor items such as keepsake boxes, heart-shaped door signs/posts, coasters and even beaded jewellery. Other products made from Rooibos and other tea bags include purses, handbags, trays, paintings and more. For more information visit www.tbagdesigns.co.za

Let’s continue the care Spescare was founded to develop the sorely needed subacute healthcare services, throughout Southern Africa. In ancient Roman religion, Spes was known as the goddess of hope. Therefore Spescare’s aim is to once again combine hope with care into our healthcare system. In order to do so, Spescare provides holistic and comprehensive care programs for the rehabilitation process.
What is a Subacute hospital? Essentially a subacute hospital is a hospital without theatres. Or in simpler words, a subacute is a hospital that acts as a bridge, transitioning patients from acute hospital care back to their homes. Therefore, patients who are stable, but still require nursing care or physical rehabilitation, can be transferred from an acute hospital to a subacute hospital like Spescare, before being discharged home. Subacute hospitals offer comprehensive goal orientated treatment, rendered immediately after a hospital stay in which the patient has already been diagnosed and is in a stable condition. A treatment plan is set out by the
doctor which provides ongoing specialised nursing and rehabilitative care at lower cost, without depleting your medical insurance. The benefit of subacute hospitals is that they allow patients to leave acute hospitals sooner, for a custom-built environment designed specifically for rehabilitation treatment. Subacute care provides the coordinated services of a multidisciplinary team on a daily basis. The team consists of General Practitioners, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Social Workers, Dietician, Speech Therapists and a Gymnasium for physical rehabilitative services.

Getting SA’s Biggest Sporting Rivals To Punt Our Beer - Legend! “What better way to prove just how great our beer is than to ask our nation’s biggest rivals to tell us? And tell us they did. Sure, we may have conveniently forgotten to mention which Newlands the beer really came from, but that didn’t stop the Aussies from enjoying every last sip. Some enjoyed it so much that they went as far as to claim it as their new favourite,” says Nico Stone, brand manager at Newlands Spring Brewing Co. The response was overwhelmingly positive, as expected. But the reaction when the Aussies were told that their new favourite beer was brewed in Newlands, South Africa and not Newlands, Australia, was absolutely priceless. “Sorry to pull a fast one on you, Aussies. It was all in the spirit of the game. So, from one legend to another, go and have (another) one on us. Cheers,” Stone adds. Few sporting rivalries compare to the white-knuckle intensity of cricket tests between South Africa and Australia. When our great nation goes up against the (other) green and gold team from down under, the tension is palpable. Fiercely competitive and deeply patriotic, both on and off the pitch, it’s a stretch to think that the Aussies would ever be caught out publicaly punting a Saffer beer. Well, think again. As it turns out, the Aussies share more than just our cricket colours. They also have a Newlands. Not our Newlands, but a Newlands. A sneaky opportunity the team at the Newlands Spring Brewing Co. simply couldn’t resist.
“Barrels of Fun At Onderkloof” Onderkloof Wine Estate, nestled at the foot of Schapenberg mountains in Somerset West, recently had a barrel tasting where wine enthusiasts could learn the difference between young barrel wine and bottle wine. The Onderkloof Tasting Room, now open every first Saturday of the month from 10h30 until 15h00, was bustling with visitors from far and wide to taste Onderkloof’s award winning wines. Dashing Swiss winemaker, Yves Musfeld, was there to answer questions of visitors eager to learn about winemaking. Noting the difference in colour between barrel wine and bottled wine, aficionados could also make a clear distinction between the difference in the nose and on the palate.

Eat Out, SA’s best guide to SA’s best food, is celebrating its twentieth birthday with the announcement of some exciting additions to the team. The new faces – in three brand new roles – are Margot Janse, Zola Nene and Kholeka Kumalo. Margot Janse almost needs no introduction. As a significant figure in developing the local food scene, Janse is best known for her prolific work as the executive chef of The Tasting Room at Le Quartier Français, a position she held until 2017. Eat Out is thrilled to announce that Margot will be undertaking the position of judging convenor of the 2018 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards. As the judges will remain anonymous, Janse will become the face of the rigorous judging process that determines the Top 20. Her role will be critical in maintaining integrity and consistency across the panel, serving as a touchstone for the judges, and providing feedback to restaurants. Zola Nene and Kholeka Kumalo will be joining the Eat Out editorial team – led by editor-in-chief Anelde Greeff – in the roles of Cape Town and Johannesburg restaurant editors respectively. They will become Eat Out’s eyes and ears on the ground – visiting restaurants, talking to chefs, eating and reviewing, and gathering news stories.

Stronger currency
makes a Plan B in Europe cheaper! Acquiring a 2nd citizenship or permanent residency is very appealing to many South Africans. The main reason is to implement a Plan B to assure the family’s future by protecting against political risk and economical instability. Europe is still the preferred destination due to being the world’s largest single market & global trading block; as well as the lifestyle aspects and business / work opportunities on offer. But up until recently, the weak ZAR has made investing in Europe almost unattainable. The recent strengthening of the ZAR against the EURO has made securing a Plan B in Europe affordable. When comparing last year’s high of R16.98 to this year’s low of R14.40 – securing permanent residency in Cyprus is now R775,000 cheaper; and acquiring a 2nd citizenship is now a whopping R5,1Million cheaper! Having a 2nd citizenship in Europe gives unlimited access to the EU & the UK. Chief benefits include travelling, living, working & studying anywhere in the European Economic Area; plus visa-free travel to many countries. Permanent residency is also attractive because it gives the permit holders the legal right to live in that country without having to go through an onerous immigration process should they wish to make a permanent move. Cyprus, an English-speaking, ex-British colony and full EU member currently has the most attractive 2nd citizenship and permanent residency programmes available. Citizenship is granted in 3 months via Cyprus’ “Citizenship through investment” programme: - It’s the quickest process in Europe; - all dependent children up to age 28 and the parents of the investor qualify; - it’s an investment – not a donation; - the property/ies CAN be rented out; and need to be retained for only 3 years; - citizenship is passed down through descent offering a legacy to future generations.
Permanent residency is granted in 4 – 6 weeks on the “Fast Track” programme. - this is the only programme in Europe where 3 generations in the same family (including both the parents & in-laws) all acquire residency by buying one property! - dependent children up to 25 qualify; - the property can be rented out; - there is no requirement to live in Cyprus; nor be domiciled there for tax.
- minimum property investment is €2Million.
Some lifestyle attractions that Cyprus offers are: - Euro-accredited education gives your children an advantage when they enter the global job market; - low cost but high standard of living; - Europe on your doorstep; - 1st world medical facilities & affordable healthcare with highly qualified doctors & specialists. An astute offshore property investment that works for the short, medium and long term is the achievement of a lifetime. In Cyprus investing in the “Citizenship through Investment” or the “Fast Track residency” programme not only makes financial sense, but it will tangibly benefit your family for generations to come.

POETRY COLLECTION
NORVAL FOUNDATION
EVOKES EFFORTLESS WINTERTIME VIBRANCY
OPENS IN CAPE TOWN
The Poetry autumn/winter range for 2018 features luxuriously feminine pieces with wistful, contemporary influences that draw inspiration from the historical le marchand des quatre saisons - the market of the four seasons.
The long-anticipated Norval Foundation in Steenberg opened its doors at the end of April 2018. The new centre for art is a research and exhibition space for 20th and 21st-century artworks, as well as a platform for music and cultural expression. Adjacent to Table Mountain National Park, the Norval Foundation will offer visitors a multisensory experience that combines the exhibition of art with an appreciation for nature. Housed in world-class facilities, the foundation includes a sculpture garden, outdoor amphitheatre, purpose-built exhibition spaces, a research library, a restaurant and bar, a shop and a children’s playground.
The AW18 collection, of which 37% was locally produced, was designed with the contemporary woman in mind. The winter’s key neutral is grey, with primary red and ochre yellow that add vibrancy to the overall seasonal palette. Dusty pinks underpin the collection’s golden thread of delicacy, while olive and forest green provide the organic notes that tie it all together. Key movements for the upcoming season include chunky knits that make for an effortless addition to the coveted layered look. Florals take centre stage on long maxi dresses and pair wonderfully with interest fabrics like velvet. Key pieces that are bound to cause a stir this season include a sweeping maxi dress in a gorgeous botanical print, a voluminous ochre-yellow parka, as well as cardigans, not to mention the grey Prince of Whales check suit with its stylish, structured trousers and blazer. Velvet is also bigger than it has ever been, and this versatile fabric has been applied to trousers, dresses and blousesalike. The Poetry winter coat collection caters for all occasions. For easy wear, there is the throw-on, open-end, lightweight long line coat; while the short sleeve tie-belt coat is tailormade to round of the ultimate layered effect and perfect for showing off this season’s variety of enticing sleeve details. As for shoes and accessories, the main focus for winter will always be boots, but this year there’s also plenty to enjoy in terms of transitional styles. Key trends are high ankle boots, hardware, combat boots, block heels, ballerina pumps, stud detailing and suede in rich colours such as berries, blacks, and tans with pops of emerald and rust. Dot those Is and cross those Ts with super chic velvet gloves, wool berets, faux fur stoles, pom-pom beanies, oversized winter scarves and tassel earrings. This season’s foremost bag silhouette is definitely the cross-body leather purse in a variety of shapes The humble earring is one of this season’s most important accessories.
The Skotnes Restaurant, named after legendary South African artist, Cecil Skotnes overlooks the foundation’s serene wetland and innovative sculpture garden and shamelessly integrates nature and architecture. The menu pays homage to classical South African cuisine, whilst updating its flavours and distilling its ingredients to their simplest possible presentation. At the helm of the Skotnes is Executive Chef, Phil de Villiers. De Villiers previously led the Primal Eatery, which was named Eat Out’s Best Steakhouse of 2017 Guided by director Elana Brundyn and her team of museum professionals, the Norval Foundation aims to create high quality exhibitions and public programming. The Norval family are the founders and initial funders of the Norval Foundation and aim to make art widely accessible to local and international visitors, by creating a self-sustainable centre for art The proceeds from capital donations will be used to secure the foundation for future generations.

HEALTH
HOPE FOR “ADHD/ADD” WITH SOUNDWAVE THERAPY The prolific diagnosis of these has caused countless children to rely on chemicals - resulting in various side-effects, particularly with long-term use. Many parents are now desperately searching for new ways of dealing with the symptoms. Scientific research shows that Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc deficiencies often cause typical “ADHD” symptoms. Zinc: A “mood modulator”. Zinc deficiency, common among “ADHD” patients, impedes the optimal functioning of more than 300 other essential nutrients. Copper: Vital for development and function of the central nervous system, although an excess can be toxic. Zinc- to-Copper ratio is generally low in children with hyperactivity disorders, e.g. “ADHD”. Magnesium: Essential for all brain-based skills/tasks. Deficiency may cause reduced attention span; increased aggression and fatigue; lack of concentration; irritability; nervousness and mood swings. These often are simply ascribed to “ADHD”. Raising Magnesium levels can improve the characteristic sleep disturbance - thus improving the other symptoms. Certain behaviour patterns can also cause these deficiencies. Children may resist following parents’ guidelines regarding daily diet. Also, they lack the attention span required to sit through a meal, thus not absorbing adequate levels of nutrition. This may be due to the appetite suppressant effects of certain treatment medications; or a whole range of other factors, including inadequate nutrition during the mother’s pregnancy, and many others. The above is not claiming to be an exhaustive medical report. Nevertheless, this field is well worth further personal research. Source: https://goo.gl/DuUbMm At SoundWaves Health Clinic we assess –and treat – all these and other deficiencies, without drawing blood. Our Hunter Non Linear System is completely safe and non-invasive for children, teenagers and adults who suffer from “ADHD/ADD” symptoms. This is just 1 of a vast range of medical conditions to be remedied by harmless, non-chemical, “alternative” therapy.
Our Foundational Scan can identify the cause of a symptom even at chromosomal level, while analysing all body systems, organs, tumours, allergies, etc. This procedure includes our non-invasive mammogram, “pap” smear and prostate examinations. At the bright and cheery SoundWaves Health Clinic, Charl de Villiers and his wife Anne-Marie are both passionate about helping people find the “sound pathway to sound health!” Article by Anne-Marie de Villiers For more information visit: No. 6, Old Cape Mall, 33 Beach Rd, Gordon’s Bay, Call: 083 267 9745, e-mail: admin@soundwaves.capetown or visit www.soundwaves.gettimely.com, Follow us on Facebook
A HEALTHY BUSINESS AND A HEALTHY YOU The month of May really starts to split the really committed fitness fundies from the rest. Early mornings are now dark and a little chilly. The weather seems to be a great motivator to hit the snooze button instead of getting up and getting active.
Your business is no different. It too goes through seasons. To ensure the fruits of your labour, you now need to push through the darker times. Business was never supposed to be easy and despite the fact that we love the fantasy of entrepreneurs like Sir Richard Branson, we often forget the ‘25 year overnight success’ it took to get them there. So what lessons can we learn from health and fitness that we can use in our business as well? Create a new high performance business fitness plan for your business with these easy steps: Set a specific business goal, Derive a detailed training / implementation plan, Allocate regular and uninterrupted time for training and practise, Focus on beating your personal bests and celebrating the small incremental changes, Commit the goal to daily action and stick with it until achieved, Seek out like minded individuals to engage with regularly, and Get a coach to push you and ensure you succeed. Pretty simple process when setting the goal for your health and fitness. You already have the skills. Now just apply the same to your business.
At the back of our minds we still remember the articles last year saying a beach body is built in the winter, but … December is really far away and it’s just so much easier to lie in a little longer. Remaining fit and healthy now, really starts to test our discipline and it’s here where we start to split the men from the boys (or the formidable women from the girls).
Always remember that your business is your chosen vehicle to serve you, your goals and dreams as well as those of your family. It is however also the same vehicle that must produce time and money to allow you do reach those. Get it fitter and healthier today. Bold Developers Drive Cape Town’s Property Skyward Politics, market sentiment, and bold developers drive Cape Town’s property skyward. And to edge of the ocean. The Cape Town property market has been abuzz since the election of President Cyril Ramaphosa, Budget Speech and cabinet shuffle - all factors which are “expected to go a long way towards reaffirming investor confidence in real estate”, according to Dr. Andrew Golding, chief executive of the Pam Golding Property group. As testament to that, in the last few months alone, we have seen the controversial announcement of Cape Town’s multibillion-rand foreshore freeway precinct development proposing an R8.3-billion plan to create 3,200 'market-related residential units,' Cape Town’s coolest restaurant thoroughfare, Bree Street, will see the 36-storey retail and residential block, 16 on Bree, with a July 2020 launch date for the city’s tallest residential tower. Even Hout Bay has seen Sol Kerzner announcing his Leeukoppie estate with prices ranging from R20.5 million to R30.5 million. It is evident an appetite for bold development remains. Nine out of 10 richest SA suburbs are in Cape Town, with the average price topping R15m. These were the findings of a study done by Seeff, based on data from Lightstone and Propstats for the period 2011/2 to 2016/7. The top 10 rank as Clifton, Llandudno, Bantry Bay, Sandhurst, Camps Bay, Fresnaye, Waterfront, Higgovale, Bishopscourt and Constantia Upper. In this evolving roller-coaster environment and economy, the last decade has seen coastal explosion moving slowly inwards to inner city regeneration, and then creeping back outwards to the city’s edge - Woodstock and Mowbray being the most recent trending spots for value-hungry investors and new home buyers. One area that is stealthily making a play is the stretch from the city out to The West Coast with new developments springing forth from the Northern Suburbs and inching closer to the city, with Parklands and Century City already booming. Bettering many recent Woodstock and Mowbray developments on price, but offering a rare piece of ocean fronted real estate, The Edge Development at Lagoon Beach, has carved a niche for Northern Suburbians and West Coasters who need to get closer to the city and reduce traffic time while maintaining a more spacious lifestyle. On the edge of the city (9kms), and edge of the sea, it offers investors or homeowners a double-edged proposition, but happens to drop in at a good value starting price at 1.35m.
The brains trust behind it, Combined Developers, are leaders in the area, while sales agents Willbridge Property Company have just completed a 47-unit sell-out of Robert Silke’s new Tuynhuys development on Keerom Street. Ranking in the top 10 Knight Frank Prime Global Cities Index along with the top cities in the world for the best luxury house price growth, Cape Town ostensibly has it all - between mountain views and sea, Blue Flag beaches, shopping malls, trendy leisure and food precincts, and wine farms. Ironically, The Edge sits right in the middle of all the above. It’s a short walk (300m) to the beach for ocean lovers, young families, surfers, and kiteboarders, but at the same time, it lies close to the city and to Century City, connected by Marine Drive, The MyCiti BRT transport system, and bike lanes. As a live-work-play environment, office workers could even shop, and work, then walk next door to their home. Short-term and hospitality rental specialists, Home from Home, say it has the short-term letting appeal, but that’s a given if the location is just right. “PURELY SOUTH AFRICAN” Music and Memories compiled and produced by David Bolton A self-narrating musical revue bringing the story and histrionics of old Springbok hits performed by South African singers and bands in a comfortable, relaxed supper theatre styled show. It is a light-hearted evening’s entertainment designed to bring back all those forgotten memories through its songs and visual effects. Since music is so instrumental in reviving the memories, especially with the aged and having been involved with his late mother in a home, David was shocked to see so many of the aged being left and forgotten and saw that with music one could revive their memories and get some of them to converse albeit for just a short while. “It needs to be shown how important a role music plays in our lives and so the saying, “1 song 1000 memories” becomes so relevant”.

“Join us for three days of wonderful music and genuine warm Overberg hospitality. It was decided that it would be great to use the talents of local community actors and singers to be able to raise funds for the welfare aged. Bearing this in mind, it was offered to the Cape Peninsula Organization for the Aged and the Senior Santa Shoebox, a project assisting the welfare aged. The Cape Peninsula Organisation For The Aged saw this as an ideal opportunity to showcase their 65th Anniversary. “The show, 'Purely South African,' was chosen because we do it purely out of enjoyment, purely for charity and it acknowledges Purely South African talent,” says David Bolton. The show has been adapted in collaboration with well-known Cape Town Director Kyla Thorburn. The new show brings in some newer songs that we well may have forgotten. David Bolton, himself a multi CATA award winning actor was born in Pietermaritzburg and moved to Cape Town in 1993. This show also provides unknown actors the opportunity to show their talents to the public and the casts boasts a diverse group of new talent. “If we can have fun doing this as well as providing a new platform for artists and do it all for a great cause then we will have succeeded,” says David. The revue features 12 talented actors with a live band! The show times are 7:30pm to 10:30pm from 4th - 14th July at the ROTUNDA at the Bay Hotel in Camps Bay. Tickets are R295 and available at www.quicket.co.za
