LIFESTYLE Page 12 As part of its modernisation programme, the Department of Home Affairs has started upgrading its live-capture system to its offices across the country to enable automation of birth registration and re-issue of marriage and death certificates that are already in the national population register, and the printing of parents’ details in children’s passports.

The department’s Director-General, Mkuseli Apleni says the upgrade will make a huge difference to the controversial issue of unabridged certificates that everyone has been complaining about. He says with the upgrades, the last page of the child’s passport will have the details of the parents, meaning that parents will no longer be required to travel with an unabridged birth certificate.

“When you apply for the passport of the child, the system will automatically go into the NPR and say these are the parents of the child and print them at the back of the passport. They will no longer need to carry a birth certificate,” said Mkuseli Apleni.

Apleni says travellers into South Africa will unfortunately have to carry their children’s birth certificates if the parents details are not printed on the child’s passport. He says they have made suggestions to the international body which manages the issues of travelling globally that children’s passports should have details of the parents. If this can be approved, it means it will now be applicable to the whole world.

South African National Space Agency to host SpaceOps 2020 The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) in partnership with the Cape Town & Western Cape Convention Bureau has won the bid to host the SpaceOps 2020 conference. The conference will bring together over 600 global Space specialists at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, with an estimated economic impact of R11 520 000.

This could not come at a better time, with the new Meerkat radio telescope launched in the Northern Cape recently.

Thanks to significant investments made by the Department of Science and Technology in satellite and telescope projects, the local space tech eco-system is growing. Not only is this forecast to boost infrastructure development and the economy, but will also enhance the ranks of science and engineering graduates in the country.

This means that the retailer aims to have none of its packaging end up in landfills, which will requires 100% recyclable materials and a supportive recycling infrastructure.

Key to realising Woolworths’ vision include the phasing out of unnecessary single-use plastics, and the commitment for all its packaging to be either reusable or recyclable by 2022. Woolworths has also committed to phasing out single-use plastic shopping bags completely by 2020.

“The Western Cape has been at the forefront of South African Space tech for many years: the tracking station established by NASA at Hartebeeshoek received the first images of Mars in 1965; the first miniaturized satellite designed and manufactured in South Africa was completed at Stellenbosch University in 1999; and more recently SANSA has allocated funds to Denel Spaceteq to develop the EO-Sat1 - a high resolution multispectral imaging satellite which will be used for a variety of urban management processes.

One of Africa’s longest & Highest Ziplines Re-opens In The Mother City Cape Town Ziplines, an SA Forest Adventures initiative, re-opened in Silvermist Estate on Hout Bay Road recently.

Following a two year closure, the site has been re-opened with GoPro partnering with Cape Town Ziplines last month. Reported as one of the brands top selling products, the partnership marks the first GoPro resort partnership on African soil.

Present to officially re-open the Zipline was the Provincial Minister of Transport and Public Works, Minister Donald Grant, who commented: “Tourism has long been identified as a key driver of the Western Cape’s economy and forms part of our economic growth strategy. This zipline, as an addition to our many tourist attractions, will not only expose visitors to this area’s natural beauty and distinctly South African topography, but will also offer a unique experience to our visitors, unlike that which they may have experienced elsewhere.”

Open no matter the weather, the 2.3km Zipline tour is one of Africa’s longest and highest situated in the heart of the Mother City, easily accessible from all major transport routes including the Hop-on, Hop-off City Sightseeing Cape Town Bus. The excursion starts with an exhilarating 4x4 trail up the mountain. Boasting views of the southern side of Table Mountain as well as the Constantia Winelands stretching across to Muizenberg, the 240-metre-long cable suspended 70 metres above ground marks the start of the adventure. Cables range from 190 metres to just under 500 metres, with the tour lasting around two hours.

Silvermist Estate has a number of facilities including a restaurant, conference facilities and other team building options.

Commenting on the importance of attractions in the tourism offering, Wesgro’s Chief Marketing Officer, Judy Lain, said: “SA Forest Adventures has taken a beautiful natural environment and created an experience that will attract local and

international visitors, all within the guidelines of responsible tourism. Hiring staff from the community, the Zipline has created much needed permanent employment in the area.”

Panasonic Launches South African Headquarters In Cape Town!

Panasonic South Africa – a subsidiary of Panasonic Corporation – launched its new South African Headquarters in Century City, Cape Town.

The event was attended by the Managing Executive Officer of Panasonic Corporation in Japan, Mr Daizo Ito, Premier of the Western Cape, Helen Zille, Western Cape Minister of Finance, Dr Ivan Meyer, Head of the Africa Region, Mr. Hiroyuki Shibutani, and the Managing Director of Panasonic South Africa (Pty) Ltd, Mr Hidetoshi Kaneko.

Mr Hidetoshi Kaneko said, “We are excited about our new headquarters in Cape Town. We decided to move to the Western Cape because of the growth in our customer base in this region, and access to other large companies located in the Cape.

We are also encouraged by its strong skills-pipeline.”

More than 40 staff will be based in these offices, with many relocating from Johannesburg.

“We are also very excited about their plans for growth and expansion, and our investment promotion team is on stand-by to assist them.”

At the launch, Premier Zille said: “It is” a great vote of confidence in our region to have such a major global player set up base in Cape Town. Since 2009 we have worked tirelessly to create a conducive environment for businesses to operate freely, create jobs and grow the economy. The latest move by Panasonic will have a positive impact for our economy, and I am certain it will clear the way for other investors to do the same.

The new Century City based facility has established a “Life Experience Centre”, open to the public and designed to enable Panasonic to hear customer voices with the aim of developing new products which are uniquely suited to the South African market. On display are several Panasonic products which are available in other parts of the world but have not been introduced into the South African market as yet.

Among others, these include their electric bike, robotic vacuum cleaner, facil steamer, dish washer, hand-held massager, OLED television, Technics sound system, and the Nano-e dryer. In March, Panasonic launched the “You can be the light” project in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Foundation. At this ceremony Panasonic donated the first batch of Panasonic-branded solar lanterns (414 units) to the Foundation, who in turn will distribute the units to those in need of lighting in off-grid areas. As 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of Mr. Nelson Mandela’s birth and the founding of Panasonic by Konosuke Matsushita, Panasonic multiplied 100 by two and aims to donate 10,000 lights over the next few years.

Springbok Captain, Siya Kolisi, who appeared on the first video clip to promote the project, received a plaque from Panasonic at the event and welcomed the company’s efforts to assist poor communities.

UCT Autism Centre Honoured

Choir Wins big In Wales

With Double International Awards For Research

The Stellenbosch University (SU) Choir made a clean sweep at the prestigious Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales, winning all three categories they participated in – Youth Choirs‚ Mixed Choirs and Open Choirs. The choir finished first in the Youth Choir category with a score of 95,5%, won Mixed Choirs with 90,3% and Open Choirs with 95%. André van der Merwe, conductor of the SU Choir, was awarded the Jayne Davies Prize for Best Conductor at the Eisteddfod.

A University of Cape Town (UCT) interdisciplinary team, the Centre for Autism Research in Africa (CARA), led by Prof Petrus de Vries, Professor of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at UCT, recently received two prestigious international awards for their research in autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental that is associated with difficulties in social interaction and communication, and a pattern of repetitive and ritualistic behaviours. ASD is recognized by the World Health Organization as a global public health concern, but in Africa very little research has been done and clinical services for families who live with ASD are extremely limited.

The International Society for Autism Research (INSAR) awarded the CARA team the inaugural Cultural Diversity Research Award “to recognize and support investigators or teams who conduct community-based or community-partnered research that leaves a lasting impact on under-served and under-researched communities.”

The award was made at the Society’s May 2018 conference in Rotterdam.

Van der Merwe says he is incredibly proud of the choir’s achievements in Wales.

“The true spirit of making music together has triumphed. The warm reactions of audiences to our music was really moving. I feel the artistic dimension of the choir has deepened because we could share the soul of South Africa on an international stage.”

The International Musical Eisteddfod took place from 5 - 8 July 2018. This festival yearly attracts around 50 000 visitors and 4 000 participants, including 150 choirs, from across the world. The SU Choir was one of only four choirs invited to perform in the International Celebration Concert in front of an audience of 2 000.

This concert was the official opening of the Llangollen Eisteddfod and was broadcast on British TV. The SU Choir also took part in the colourful International Parade through Llangollen which sees the participating choirs walk through the city as representatives of their countries.

Following their visit to the UK, the choir heads for the 2018 Interkultur World Choir Games in Tshwane in which more than 300 choirs from across the world will participate, because André van der Merwe is chairperson of the artistic committee of the Choir Games, the choir is not allowed to take part in the competition. However, the SU Choir, which has been number one on the Interkultur ranking list of 1 000 international choirs for the past five years, has been invited to perform as demonstration choir at the Choir Games.

Prof de Vries commented: “I was delighted by this international recognition of the outstanding work done by my wonderful team. We really believe that research is about working together and collaborating with passionate and positive international partners. Without this teamwork none of our work or achievements would be possible”.

At the same conference, Prof de Vries was one of the first group of researchers elected as INSAR Fellow. The Fellowship is awarded “to honour distinguished members of INSAR whose research has made a significant international impact on the scientific understanding of autism spectrum disorder, clinical practice, educational methods, and/or policy.”

Prof Dan Stein, Head of the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health at UCT said: “These awards speak to the tremendous work that the Division of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry has initiated in this key area.”

“I am delighted by the international recognition of our autism research, but given the enormous burden of ASD, particularly in Africa and other low-resource settings, we all have much to do,” de Vries concluded.

This remarkable achievement speaks to UCT’s goal of being a research intensive university with the aim of producing new solutions to challenges facing the African continent and the world.

CAPE TOWN VOTED NUMBER 1 CITY IN AFRICA & THE MIDDLE EAST In Travel + Leisure’s 2018 reader’s poll, Cape Town has been named number one favourite city in Africa and the Middle East for the 17th year.

The eminent global travel publication cited a favourable exchange rate, the opening of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, its world-class hotels and the fact that it’s a regional hub for business and leisure travel among the reasons for the city’s ongoing success.

Cape Town’s tourism offering is well known, but the city’s tourism officials are particularly thrilled about this year’s achievement, given the region’s challenges with a water shortage during the period: “We’ve maintained an ‛open for business’ approach throughout our efforts in driving sustainable tourism, and this accolade reveals that this strategy has worked; we remain an unparalleled destination on the continent, and one whose multiple initiatives in saving water has ensured that we can continue to attract visitors. It was recently announced that these efforts, coupled with healthy winter rainfall, have contributed to a great recovery in the water crisis, although residents and visitors are encouraged to carry on in the same way to ensure that this recovery can be completed.

EXCEPTIONAL HONOUR FOR SU BOTANICAL GARDEN

Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI), internationally known for its efforts in securing plant diversity for the well-being of people and the planet, has accredited the Stellenbosch University (SU) Botanical Garden, the oldest university botanical garden in South Africa, only the second botanical garden in Africa and the first in South Africa to receive this honour.

BGCI Accreditation recognises achievements in plant conservation with institutions carrying out a range of conservation-related policies, practices and activities.

Accreditation can result in tangible benefits for participating gardens – such as recognition, peer review, creating standards for excellence, and funding – and will act as a motivator for botanic garden leadership.

In congratulating SU in receiving the accreditation, Dr Paul P. Smith, Secretary General of the BGCI based in the UK, said that the SU Botanical Garden is very special due to it being the only university-managed botanic garden in the Cape Floristic Region.

WWF South Africa is celebrating 50 years of protecting and nurturing our natural environment, ensuring that some of the most remarkable places in Southern Africa are preserved for people and nature.

Many of these places have become pristine and much-loved destinations for South African and international visitors, but they would not exist were it not for the significant conservation and lobbying efforts of WWF SA. Here are three significant WWF SA milestones which ensure our spaces and natural resources are protected and sustained for all to enjoy: Wildlife: Rhino relocated to breeding projects on community-owned game reserves - Since the 80s, WWF has been involved with conserving the iconic and endangered African rhino – both black and white. With great foresight in 2003, far ahead of the devastating rhino horn poaching crisis, WWF established a breeding and subsequent relocation project for the critically endangered black rhino. In 2007, the first community-owned game reserve received a group of black rhino from WWF’s breeding project. To date, 11 new groups of about twenty black rhino have been relocated and successfully established.

Water: A million hectares of alien plants cleared, freeing up natural water flow - In the mid-90s WWF helped to catalyse a national job creation initiative in areas of high density invasive alien vegetation, to clear these water-thirsty plants from the rivers and free up natural water flow. Working for Water is now run by government with over 300 projects across all nine provinces. They have collectively trained and employed 20 000 men and women who have cleared more than a million hectares of alien plants.

Oceans: Protecting our oceans and empowering seafood lovers - In the early days of conservation in South Africa, in 1969, the first funded marine research project involved tagging of 200 000 loggerhead turtles on the east coast.

In recent years WWF SA has been driving change across the entire marine sector through fishing companies and retailers, as well as empowering consumers to make sustainable seafood choices through the red, orange or green grading system known as WWF-SASSI, the Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative.

WWF SA will be hosting a fund raising gala dinner at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on Saturday, 1 September 2018, calling on all to join them as they share their optimistic vision to 2068 and take guests through the challenges and successes of their journey from 1968 to 2018 in protecting everything from South Africa’s rhino, to the oceans, freshwater sources and unique wild spaces.

He added that with various wellregarded academics and research groups within SU, the SU Botanical Garden provides the “perfect platform” from which to build international partnerships and drive various research and conservation projects.

“The Garden has an important focus on environmental conservation and especially the protection and study of species that are critically endangered. This accreditation also reflects the increasing role that the Garden plays in the international pursuit of environmental conservation,” comments Prof Stan du Plessis, SU Chief Operating Officer.

He also credited Mr Martin Smit, former curator of the SU Botanical Garden as being instrumental in SU receiving this accolade. “Not only did Mr Smit greatly enhance the research value of the Garden – he for example introduced new standards of recordkeeping in the garden – he also initiated large-scale projects. These include restoring the heating system for the lily dams to accommodate the specific needs of the giant water lily, Victoria cruziana – with the garden being the only garden in Africa, apart from Madagascar, where visitors can observe this unique lily. He also renovated and enlarged the tropical glass house – now home to the world’s smallest water lily, Nymphaea thermarum.”

This critically endangered water lily disappeared from the Rwandan wild a decade ago, and there is only a handful of botanical gardens worldwide who have succeeded in propagating and growing this sensitive little plant. On Smit’s initiative the long-forgotten underground water reservoir was renovated, just in time to keep the plants alive during the current drought.

The garden’s database has been digitalised and via the IrisBg database the garden is now connected with other botanical gardens worldwide. This also means that visitors can learn more about the plants via the downloadable Garden Explorer app on smart phones.

The accreditation is valid for a period of five years with the expectation that gardens will maintain the necessary standards in areas of activity specific to botanic gardens, such as documentation of collections and supporting scientific research and conservation.

Heritage Tour Visits Namaqualand The 51 participants in 27 vehicles will arrive at Matroosberg 4x4 near Ceres and will leave via Malmesbury, Darling and Yzerfontein to Velddrif. From there they will travel via Piketberg and Leopoldtville to Lambertsbay. On 24 September they will return via Clanwilliam, Citrusdal and Porterville to Ceres, where the gala event will take place.

The two oldest vehicles taking part in the 2018 Heritage Tour belongs to Philip Kuschke and Ockert van der Berg, who will both be driving 1915 Ford Model Ts. Phillip and Amanda Rosser will be travelling in the second oldest vehicle, namely their 1926 Ford Model T. These Model Ts have become icons of the tour and excite a lot of enthusiasm wherever they go, with lots of townspeople who want to take their selfies with these grand old cars.

The 7th Heritage Tour of the Southern Cape Old Car Club (SCOCC) will be visiting the West Coast from 21 – 25 September 2018. The Heritage Tour celebrates National Heritage Day, and a visit to the Westcoast will provide an opportunity to admire Namaqualand’s flowers that are in full bloom.

“Although I have always been interested in old cars, my sons and I have only recently started collecting old cars and motorcycles. We believe our support can help conserve our rich car heritage for future generations,” said Hannes. They are the proud owners of 42 cars and 9 motorcycles, and they plan to open a new museum, called ReCollection Drives, in the Eastern Cape town.

Veteran and classic cars generate a lot of interest wherever they go, and residents and visitors to towns along the 2018 Heritage Tour route can look forward to a display of cars, some of which date back to 1915.

Mike and Susan Alexander will take part in their 1936 Plymouth Sedan, and Kevin and Desmond Casey from Harrismith in the Free State in their 1936 Ford Phaeton.

Most participants live in the Garden Route, but Jan du Randt and Jani Klomp will be travelling from Storms River in their 1962 Consul Capri 215, while Sydney and Daphne Young of Tulbagh will travel in their 1961 Morris Minor 1000. The popularity of the British Morris Minor 1000 is illustrated by the fact that no less than five of them, manufactured between 1957 and 1962, will take part in the Tour.

The Southern Cape Old Car Club, which was founded in George in 1988, presents the George Old Car Show every year in February. The Show is preceded by a Veteran Tour, which in 2018 for the first time took place over five days.

The Heritage Tour offers SCOCC members yet another opportunity to travel in their beautiful old cars. They love showing off their collector’s items to a appreciating audience in all the towns they visit.

Principal Ballerina with Staatsballett Berlin, Russian-born Ksenia Ovsyanick started her training in Belorussian State Ballet College, winning a scholarship at Prix de Lausanne to go to the English National Ballet School. Her professional career started with English National Ballet and over the years she has performed on stages around the world, including the Opera National de Paris, Le Palais Garner, the Royal Opera House, Muscat, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, the Royal Albert Hall in London and Buckingham Palace. At the age of 20 she danced her first Giselle and was nominated for English National Ballet’s Emerging Dancer award.

Ksenia has just done two performances with the Cape Town City Ballet (CTCB) in this role in the Artscape Opera House, when she was partnered by Senior Principal Dancer, Daniel Szybkowski. Despite having only three days to rehearse with her new partner and become familiar with the CTCB’s version of the ballet, Ksenia and the Company were given a standing ovation at both of her performances.

Accompanied by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Allan Stephenson, the production of Giselle was a resounding success. Veronica Paeper’s popular ballet, Cinderella will be the next performance scheduled for 5-21 October 2018 and the Cape Junior Ballet Gala Performance will take place on 12 October 2018 at the Artscape Opera House.

New Elgin Railway Market Brings in the Crowds

A new attraction has popped up in Elgin in the Western Cape and it’s drawing in the crowds – by road and rail. The Elgin Railway Market opened on 16 June 2018. It’s the brainchild of businessman Roger Orpen, who converted the old apple warehouse into a bustling steampunk station market boasting local vendors, live music and a gateway to the beautiful Overberg town.

Inspired by the barn’s railway-side setting, Orpen took his creative cues from the invention of steam and the industrial age, milestones accompanied by the rapid development of rail networks across the world. Creating a beautiful space where art deco meets Victorian, the Market is unlike any other in South Africa.

Sweeping staircases, detailed metal archways, light fittings and wall sconces, raw brick and stone, black metal framed panes and a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-style fan system of belts and pulleys result in a collective double take as visitors unsuspectingly enter the space.

Says Orpen, “I moved to Elgin a couple of years ago and I started to reimagine this intriguing old barn. It was far from easy to buy the building and unbundle the red tape, but I felt sure there was something special in store.”

Working with designer Corban Warrington, Orpen eventually set up his own workshop to complete all the fittings and décor elements that brought the project to life. Only local artisans worked in the studio and Orpen is committed to using local suppliers wherever possible.

The next step in Orpen’s plan was to bring a steam train to the Market, which he now does a few times a month in partnership with the Ceres Rail Company. The whistle and steam of the arriving train is a must-see for children (and adults) and a bucket list experience for the passengers who sign up to take the ride. Visitors to the market can greet the train on the station platform or view its arrival from the Market’s leisure deck overlooking the railway.

Once in the venue, market visitors can choose from food vendors purveying everything from fragrant curries to schwarmas, pizza, ribs, and burgers as well as sample Mexican dishes, pies, tarts, quiches, cheeses, breads, dips, pates and dolmades. Health conscious treats include fresh juices and low carb breads with various fillings as well as local items such jaffels, vetkoek, pancakes and a soup of the day. Visitors can also stop in for a snack from the biltong stall.

Sweet treats are abundant, including home-made cakes and ice-cream and waffles-on-a-stick. A bar serves local wines, beer and cider and an artisanal gin bar serves up local craft gins. Ground Central Coffee serves home ground brews, whilst the upstairs wine shop, stocks excellent Overberg wines.

A variety of retail offerings can be found on the mezzanine and ground floor with jewellery, leather goods, pottery, wooden pieces and freshly cut flowers to choose from.

The market has live music throughout the weekend and is in the process of constructing a children’s play space with climbing walls, ziplines and an area to hire for parties. Jungle gyms and roundabouts are currently keeping the little ones happy.

During the week, locals and working visitors can take advantage of the hot-desk zone with free wi-fi, plug points and printer facilities.
