South African National Parks (SANParks) manages a system of national parks that represent the indigenous biodiversity and associated cultural heritage of South Africa. These 21 parks are located throughout the country in coastal, arid, mountain and bushveld settings, presenting a wide range accommodation and naturebased activities.
CAPE TOWN RANKED AFRICA’S TOP CITY OF OPPORTUNITY
SANParks have a variety of places to stay such as lodges chalets, cottages, rondavels, forest cabins, furnished safari tents, caravans and camping sites that offer peace and quiet with their natural surroundings, plus they’re in great locations with plenty to do and see. They range in price and there’s something for every wallet.
Cape Town has been dubbed the African City of Opportunity, according to a recent research report published by PwC Overall, Cape Town ranked 24th out of all 31 cities, 6th out of the middle-income country cities (behind Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Moscow, Shanghai and Mexico City) and 1st in Africa. The report benchmarks Cape Town against 30 of the world’s leading cities across 66 indicators of urban success. The 30 cities identified are global centres of finance, commerce and culture and represent among them a sizeable proportion of the world economy. The 66 indicators were grouped under 10 key variables including: Intellectual capital and innovation; technology readiness; city gateway; transportation and infrastructure; health, safety and security; sustainability and the natural environment; demographics and liveability; economic clout; ease of doing business and cost. The Mother City’s strongest scores were in: cost; ease of doing business; transportation and infrastructure; and sustainability and the natural environment.

LIFESTYLE Page 12 As part of its modernisation programme, the Department of Home Affairs has started upgrading its live-capture system to its offices across the country to enable automation of birth registration and re-issue of marriage and death certificates that are already in the national population register, and the printing of parents’ details in children’s passports. The department’s Director-General, Mkuseli Apleni says the upgrade will make a huge difference to the controversial issue of unabridged certificates that everyone has been complaining about. He says with the upgrades, the last page of the child’s passport will have the details of the parents, meaning that parents will no longer be required to travel with an unabridged birth certificate.
“When you apply for the passport of the child, the system will automatically go into the NPR and say these are the parents of the child and print them at the back of the passport. They will no longer need to carry a birth certificate,” said Mkuseli Apleni. Apleni says travellers into South Africa will unfortunately have to carry their children’s birth certificates if the parents details are not printed on the child’s passport. He says they have made suggestions to the international body which manages the issues of travelling globally that children’s passports should have details of the parents. If this can be approved, it means it will now be applicable to the whole world.

This initiative in partnership with Total South Africa and FNB is in line with SANParks vision statement of ‘A sustainable National Park System Connecting Society’. The inaugural South African National Parks Week took place in 2006 and was aimed at linking the South African national parks system to the global national movement, and to also showcase the best of South Africa’s national parks.
The week gives day visitors free access to most of the 21 national parks, with special emphasis on ensuring that people from local communities close to parks get to know and experience a national park. Some of the parks will be extending the week to include weekends.

Mobile Alcohol Testing Centre Hits The Road The City of Cape Town’s Traffic Service will be deploying its new Random Breath Testing (RBT) vehicle to reduce turnaround times on the processing and prosecution of suspects arrested for drunk driving. The City’s Random Breath Testing (RBT) vehicle is kitted out and ready to assist officers in their drunk driving operations. The vehicle is a midi bus that is fitted with Evidentiary Breath Analyzer Equipment (EBAE) which eliminates the need for the drawing of blood samples or trips to the Western Cape Shadow Centre in Athlone to verify a suspect’s blood alcohol levels.
“This has been some time in the making, and I am thrilled that it is finally a reality. The RBT vehicle is effectively a mobile testing centre using specialised equipment that provides the necessary evidence for a drunk driving case.”
“Having this vehicle on hand during roadblocks will not only help cut down on time spent processing drunk driving suspects following their arrest, but will also accelerate court proceedings,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security; and Social Services, Alderman JP Smith. Currently, a motorist who is stopped at a roadblock and is suspected to be under the influence of alcohol will be arrested by the officer. The suspect can be requested to give a voluntary breath sample into a handheld breath screening device to further confirm the officer’s initial suspicion. Once arrested, the suspect is taken to the nearest police station to register a case docket for drinking and driving. Thereafter, the suspect will be required to provide an evidentiary breath sample using a prescribed EBAE device. Alternatively, if the suspect refuses to provide a breath sample they will be taken to a facility where an evidentiary blood sample will be taken by a qualified prescribed person such as a registered nurse, district surgeon or doctor. At times, nurses are on hand at roadblock operations to take the blood samples. If not, suspects are taken to the district surgeon to have the blood drawn. The delays associated with blood samples and the impact on the effective prosecution of suspects is a longstanding issue and a great source of frustration. Very often, cases are abandoned because the blood samples take so long to process. The evidentiary breath analyzer equipment provides results on the spot, which fast-tracks completion of the docket, getting the case to court and ensuring a prose-cution. To have such equipment in a roving vehicle that can be deployed at a roadblock just makes life that much easier,’ said Alderman Smith. Blood samples will continue to be used, particularly in cases where a suspect is unable to provide a breath sample due to injury as a result of a car crash, etc.
Capitec Bank Supports Innovative Fintechathon How do you come up with creative solutions to foster a cashless society? Host a hackathon of course! This is exactly what Stellenbosch University’s Launchlab did from 18 - 19 August 2018. The two-day event – which was sponsored by Capitec Bank and Entersekt was open to all Stellenbosch students, and aimed to encourage entrepreneurship and innovation while challenging the participants to find creative solves that will lead to a cashless society. Francois Dempers, Manager of digital solutions at Capitec Bank, says cash is no longer king, “Unfortunately, carrying cash is often a big personal risk as we still live in crime-prone society. Now’s the time to use the technology at our fingertips. At Capitec, we’re continuously looking to find ways to foster a cashless society in which managing finances remains simple and secure. At the moment, the smartphone is one of the best ways to achieve this.” The winning idea came from the team of Elke van der Walt, Joseph Visser, Shaun Wurdeman and Leuan Uys who created a mobile app which links to a merchant’s Bluetooth beacon. It allows the user to load cash before they leave home for a night out, order via the app whilst connected to the merchant’s beacon and make a payment by simply disconnecting from the beacon. The group says their motivation came from the opportunity which exists within the student community for safer money solutions, especially on nights out. “We’ve all had that experience of finding ourselves short of money on a night out – or perhaps losing a wallet or having it stolen.”
“That brings the predicament of how to continue the night and, later, how to get home safely. This app allows you to control how much you spend on the night – as the amount is preloaded – and to ensure you can make secure payments from your phone.” The winning team not only wowed potential future employees, but also walked away with the R 15 000 grand cash prize.

New Slipway & Arrestor bed completed on Sir Lowry’s Pass The Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) recently completed a R11 million project to construct a new slipway and truck arrestor bed at the bottom of Sir Lowry’s Pass near the intersection of the N2 and Sir Lowry’s Pass Road. This arrestor bed, the first to have been constructed by the Western Cape Government, makes this busy road route safer for all road users. The project started in January 2018 and has been successfully completed within its expected time-frame. The N2 was widened to a maximum of 13 metres along the affected stretch and the addition of an 850 metre slipway and arrestor bed. The project included fencing, barrier kerbs, storm water pipe installation, culvert construction, and the extension of layerworks. A total of R543 910 was spent on targeted enterprises, and 3 559 person-days of work were created for people from Sir Lowry’s Pass Village. The high-quality road infrastructure that DTPW provides is an important component of a safe and effective transport system, and an enabler of economic and social development in the Western Cape.
Princess Cruises Reveals Name of Fifth Royal-Class Ship As Princess Cruises’ fleet expansion continues, the premium international cruise line reveals the name of the ship it will launch in 2020 – Enchanted Princess. Enchanted Princess is scheduled to debut on June 15, 2020 sailing on a series of European voyages. Bookings for her maiden season, Summer 2020, will open on 8 November, 2018. “The name Enchanted Princess is captivating and conveys the elegance and grace of our new ship which will introduce more travellers to the pleasures and value of cruising,” said Jan Swartz president of Princess Cruises. “We are certain Enchanted Princess will exceed the expectations of our guests, ensuring they have the most memorable cruise vacation.” Ms Swartz said Princess has the strongest pipeline of premium new ship builds in the world. The arrival of Enchanted Princess will be followed by the debut of the sixth Royal-Class vessel for Princess Cruises in 2021. The cruise line also has two new Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) powered ships on order, bringing its new ship order to five ships in six years. Construction of the 143,700-ton, 3,660-passenger Enchanted Princess will take place in the Fincantieri Monfalcone shipyard with the ship set to feature an evolution of the design platform used for the cruise line’s previous Royal-Class ships. Princess Cruises currently operates a fleet of 17 modern cruise ships, sailing voyages around the globe.
Enchanted Princess is a sister ship to four other Royal-Class ships in the cruise line’s fleet – Royal Princess, Regal Princess, Majestic Princess and Sky Princess (joining the fleet in October 2019).
Cape Town Ranked Africa’s Top City of Opportunity (Continue from page 1)
Moderate scores were reported in intellectual capital and innovation; and health, safety and security. Areas for improvement include economic clout; technology readiness; city gateway; and demographics and liveability. More often than not, the city’s areas of strength are those that it has been allowed more power to control, while its areas of development often come down to one of two factors: global competition and, most notably, inequality. Highlighting opportunities for improvement, the report contains a number of recommendations aimed primarily at the city and provincial government, but they also apply to national government, business and civil society, all of whom have an interest in the success of Cape Town, these include:
Photo: V&A Waterfront, Cape Town - Photo Credit: Lisa Burnell / Cape Town Tourism
Make education and safety top priorities, even though they are complex. The city should continue to embrace technology and innovation and not be afraid to experiment. As the city embraces ‘water resilience’ in the long-term, it should also be aware of and ready to react to financial, economic and social shocks. In an ever-more connected world, Cape Town should learn from the best cities that are implementing innovative solutions. The city must build on the success of its tourism. Collaboration between government, business and citizens will unlock latent potential. A city-centric government is a win-win. The city should make use of big data to help solve important problems. City leaders should actively drive data-led delivery. In order to realise these opportunities the City of Cape Town must attract and retain the best people and the city should also continue to build on its foundations of urban finance and infrastructure that have given it the strong platform it enjoys today.

EDUCATION

Stellenbosch High School Boasts Hypermodern Science Classrooms Stellenbosch High School boasts probably the most modern science classrooms in the Western Cape. Two classrooms, for the use of science demonstrations, were recently refurbished with another three to be completed later this year. Mr Niel Retief, Head of Department and Head of Life Sciences, said that the refurbished classrooms are not only visually stimulating, but are designed in such a way that learners will be able to do experiments by themselves. “My dream is to convey the study of life with as much enthusiasm as possible. It is so much easier with the right tools, technology and infrastructure. As Life Sciences staff we asked ourselves how we would like to teach. Some out of the box thinking lead to the three old classrooms being transformed into 5 new venues – each with its own theme. We also wanted to ensure that teachers can move around in class to get to each learner. Technology is important we have everything in here – Wi-Fi, TV screens and modern computer equipment – but on its own they to not necessarily enhance learning. You still need enthusiasm and a love for what you do. Now it is just so much easier,” Retief said at a launch event held on 15 August 2018. He earlier said that learners must be exposed to the smells, sounds and effects associated with science. The new classrooms therefore place special emphasis on experimental learning, enriched by media and electronic support. The old laboratories and classrooms were nearly 40 years old and had to be refurbished. “What we have now is a space in which learners want to learn and where demonstrations and practicals can be done with ease. The feedback from learners and staff is extremely positive and they are extremely excited. Even former learners have contacted me to say that they want to take Biology and Life Sciences again!” According to Retief, each of the classrooms is themed. “Lab 1 is named ‘LIFE’ and Lab 2 is called ‘DNA’.
American Student Volunteers
These classes are designed for Life Sciences, while two more classes will focus on Physics and Chemistry, with the practical laboratory theme a combination of Life Sciences and Physical Sciences. Mr Theo Pellissier, principal of Stellenbosch High School, said that in addition to the refurbished classrooms, the school is finalising the plans for building an astro hockey which will commence in September. “This is all taking place in the year of the school’s 50th birthday celebration. In keeping with our vision, we always try to prepare our learners for life after school, including tertiary education. We try to equip learners with practical skills and not just book knowledge. The refurbished classrooms lend themselves well to this because the subjects presented here, are practical in nature.”

Takes Ministers On Tour Of New Pre-Primary School
Numerous Cape Town-based not-for-profit organisations (NPOs) have received a boost of youthful energy and expertise, thanks to 17 student volunteers who travelled all the way from the United States to make a difference in under-resourced communities. The youngsters visited the Mother City during June and July, as part of an initiative organised by the international organisation Student-Athletes Abroad.
Minister Debbie Schafer and Minister Donald Grant visited the new R10.2 million Barkly House Pre-Primary School in Newlands - a conversion project that saw the former Newlands Clinic converted to a fully functional pre-primary school for the learners of Barkly House Pre-Primary School, which had previously been accommodated in an old prefabricated structure. The conversion project commenced in April 2016, and was concluded in October 2017, involving alterations and additions to the existing Newlands Clinic to accommodate the new pre-primary school. The project also saw the construction of 5 new classrooms, Natural Science and block area, Functional/Music Room, and Aftercare room. An integral part of the professional team was lead architects, Ms Rahdia Khatieb Parker, who is an award-winning and leading female architect in her profession. Rahdia is a professional architect who practices as a specialist Interpretation Strategist. Her specialty also includes conceptual mapping and brand interpretation. Rahdia is committed to translating client’s ideas to reality through sensory experience, which has made her the perfect partner in this conversion project. Rahdia is a symbol of passion, drive and success, and is a great example to many young women seeking to make a positive impact not only in the male-dominated built environment profession, but in their country.

The Masakh’iSizwe Bursary Programme is a flagship programme that focuses on attracting and facilitating the development and availability of skills identified nationally as scarce and critical, to meet the operational needs of the Department of Transport and Public Works and indeed South Africa as a whole.
Nawaal Nacerodien, the South African director of Beyond Sports who facilitated the project, said that the students contributed in areas such as fundraising, research and social media communications. “While many of the students are excellent athletes, they were mainly selected for their people and life skills that would enable them to make a difference in a variety of programmes. It has been a life-changing cross-cultural and development experience for many.” Mornings were spent at the offices of Inyathelo (The South African Institute for Advancement) in Woodstock. This organisation has a well-equipped Civil Society Sustainability Centre, where the students could strategise, plan and undertake research using its state-of-the-art facilities. During afternoons they volunteered at NPOs throughout the peninsula. Twenty-year-old Chelbi Graham, who is studying early childhood education at John Carroll University in north-eastern Ohio, worked with Project Playground in Langa and Gugulethu. “As an Afro-American, I was interested in visiting Africa, and to discover South Africa for myself,” said Chelbi, who excels in basketball as well as track and field events. “Project Playground is involved in numerous activities like netball, soccer, art, dance and after-school tutoring. It helps children develop their self-esteem and belief in the future.”
Photo L - R: Rahdia Khatieb Parker, School Principal Ms J Reid, Western Cape Education Minister, Debbie Schafer and Western Cape Transport and Public Works Minister Donald Grant
Twenty-two-year old Marie Brockman is a biology graduate from Arcadia University in Pennsylvania. “I first came to South Africa two years ago, for two weeks,” she said. “I fell in love with the country and was keen to return and help out.”
Masakh’iSizwe bursaries are awarded annually for study disciplines related to a degree, diploma or post graduate studies in the transport, engineering or built environment. The underpinning concept of the bursary programme is to empower financially disadvantaged youth through access to tertiary education.
Marie got involved in Community Health Intervention Programmes (CHIPS), which exposed her to learning and physical activity programmes for four to nine-year-olds at 17 Cape Town schools. The organisation also offers Optifit exercise classes for 15-60 year-olds; and the Live It Up programme which helps keep senior citizens physically and mentally active.
Just this year alone, Masakh’iSizwe has awarded 55 bursaries to talented young females studying at CPUT, UCT, and Stellenbosch University. These young women are studying towards qualifications in the building environment, in fields including civil, mechanical, transportation, and electrical engineering, architecture, mechatronics, property and constructions studies, to name a few.

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT WHEN BUYING A CAR Buying and owning a car is a big financial commitment, so why do so many of us get so easily taken in by clever marketing rather than practical issues when deciding which car to buy? When buying a car, fuel consumption, service costs, availability of parts, bootspace and trade-in value all seem secondary to looks, colour, chromed mags, top speed and torque – even if we’re not absolutely sure what that is. DirectAxis has put together a check list to help prospective car buyers park their egos and get the most car for their money. Put needs ahead of wants - The abundance of shiny 4x4s and softroaders on the school run are testimony to a triumph of marketing over practicality. They may have a bit more space for schoolbags, but even the raised 2x4 crossovers cost more to buy and run than the hatchbacks they’re based on. Do you really need a 4x4 to go camping twice a year? Decide what characteristics are most important based on what you’ll be using the vehicle for - do price, handling, economy and safety outweigh ride height, off-road capability, space and power? Once you’ve decided on which characteristics are most important for you, start narrowing down which cars best meet those criteria.
Sitari Country Estate just outside Somerset West is ranked amongst the top 2 fastest selling large-scale estates in the Western Cape, with close to 900 sales achieved in the last 47 months, totalling just shy of R 1.2bn. Says Claudius Combrinck, Executive Director of Uvest Property Sales: “Sitari is growing rapidly which is reflected in the growing sales, which now average 19 a month. We have close to 3000 contractors on site every day, with 8 different apartment schemes and more than 80 homes currently under construction. With 142 homes and 177 sectional title units already occupied, we have around 700 people now living in Sitari. Sales are also boosted by the fact that Sitari’s property portfolio caters for a wide range of buyers, investors as well prospective permanent residents. Apartments are classified into a luxury or premium category and there are currently 6 apartment schemes to choose from. All of the schemes offer a very high degree of interior specification, with appliances by either Miele or Smeg. Combrinck describes how a unique plot and plan concept – The Residences – has been developed by Uvest Property Group to provide even more purchaser flexibility and attractive pricing options. “The buyer can select their ideal spot from over 50 plots and then choose from what we have identified since inception of the estate as the top 6 plans, as designed by highly regarded architectural firm BPAS. This means that the buyer has none of the hassle of having to decide which architect to use, or of trying to have plans drawn up and going through lengthy approvals. “Our buyers will have the opportunity to imprint their own personal tastes and get a clear indication of what their homes will cost from the accredited builder, Brick ‘n Board.” “Three-bedroom, 3 bathroom The Residences homes are priced from R3.140m. A luxurious and fully furnished The Residences show house is available for viewing.”

Contact Shaun Harris 082 956 0599 or the Sales Centre 021 201 7337, sales@sitari.co.za, rentals@sitari.co.za or visit www.sitari.co.za Question conventional wisdom - Armchair experts will confidently tell you that diesels are more fuel efficient and petrol gives you more power. While there once may have been some truth in this, modern petrol engines are so fuel-efficient that if you do less than 16 000km a year you’ll probably be better off with petrol due to the lower purchase price. While we’re busting myths, the performance difference between petrol and high-performance modern diesels is negligible. Sort the finance first - There are many ways to fund a car, from personal loans to specialist car finance. By doing your homework and finding out what finance you’re eligible for and at what interest rate, you can choose the best offer rather than being pressured into choosing a package on the showroom floor. Always negotiate - Some new car models are so popular that they sell for the listed price, but that’s the exception rather than the rule. With so many competing manufacturers and dealerships it’s a buyer’s market, so insist on getting the best deal you can. Be wary of extras - Many dealers will try to sell you extras. Again only consider any that you really need and bear in mind that these can often be bought later, somewhere else, at a better price. Some such as ‘paint protection’ are nearly worthless.
Think beyond the purchase price - Find out about running costs and reliability, and check the manufacturer’s claims against independent websites and road tests. If you’re buying a second-hand car or are planning to keep a new car beyond the warranty period, consider the cost of parts and services.
Insure comprehensively - if you finance your car through a bank it belongs to them until you’ve paid off the loan. It’s why they insist on comprehensive insurance. Some people try to get around this expense by cancelling the comprehensive cover a few months after buying a car. Not only does this put you in breach of the finance contract, but also means that if the car is badly damaged, written off or stolen, not only are you without a car, but will have to pay whatever is still owing on the finance agreement. “A car isn’t an investment, it’s an expense.” says Marlies Kappers, head of marketing at DirectAxis. “When you think about it that way, you may be more inclined to make decisions about which car to buy with your head, not your heart.”

A Perfect Italian Hideaway In The Heart of Stellenbosch - Col’Cacchio Tucked away in the heart of Stellenbosch you will find the perfect Italian hide away. As you approach the cobblestone courtyard entering into Col’Cacchio, you get an immediate sense of freedom as you step away from the ever so busy Plein Street. The scent of fresh garlic being pealed and prepared by the staff makes your mouth water. When seeing how the freshest ingredients are being used in their food, there is no doubt that whatever comes out of the kitchen will be superb. There are very few restaurants that have such a diverse menu and even cater for the dietary needs of Vegans, Vegetarians and those watching out for the carbs. Made with a spinach base, vegan cheese, broccoli, edamame, scattered spring onions and a drizzle of vegan basil oil, the Cosi Verde is said to be quite the Vegan wood fired pizza. My favorite would have to be the Ragu Di Manzo, slow-cooked, pulled beef short rib in red wine sauce served with your choice of pasta. Col’Cacchios in Stellenbosch welcomed its new owner, Anne-Lize de Beer on 1 June 2018. It is quite noticeable that her passion and love for food, family and people has directed her to where she is today. We wish her success on her new journey and look forward to another tantalizing experience at this Italian hide away.
Wine Tasting with Swiss Flair
Spice Up your Thursday with Curry The Newspaper recently visited the Benguela Brasserie & Restaurant, located at the five-star Lakeside Lodge & Spa, near Sedgefield. For wonderful food in a beautiful lakeside setting - whether breakfast, lunch or dinner - Benguela Brasserie & Restaurant is the perfect choice. The venue has a growing reputation as one of the leading Garden Route restaurants, popular for its imaginative and varied menu. The venue also host wine tastings, food pairings and other special events throughout the year. On Thursdays the Executive Chef, Kelly-Anne Pietersen with a history in culinary art presents her mouth-watering selection of curries to the enjoyment of the guests. The chill of a passing winter still in the air with the approaching spring, makes Thursday evenings still the best time to enjoy the flavours of curry on offer at Benguela Brasserie & Restaurant until the end of September. Three flavoured dishes, Butter chicken curry, Cape Malay lamb curry, and a red Thai prawn curry are prepared and may be enjoyed as a single dish of choice, or a trio of curry can be served.
Onderkloof Wine Estate, situated on the Helderberg wine route at the foot of the Hottentots Holland mountains, celebrated their Swiss heritage on the 4th of August by hosting a wine tasting with Swiss flair. The event attracted a large number of ‘Swiss swallows’ – Swiss citizens who spend a few months in sunny South Africa – as well as locals, curious about Onderkloof’s Swiss roots and award winning wines. Visitors enjoyed authentic bratwurst, nibbled from the excellent traditional cheese boards with home-made bread and preserves. All accompanied by huusmusik performed by a band of Schweizerisch musicians. Onderkloof’s Tasting Room, now open every first Saturday of the month from 10h30 until 15h00, was packed with visitors and wine bloggers. Not missing the opportunity, many captured a memory of the day by taking pictures of the majestic view across False Bay while enjoying Onderkloof’s quality wines and good company. Be sure not to miss Onderkloof’s next event by following Onderkloof’s Facebook, Instagram or Twitter platforms to stay on top of their scintillating events and get a chance to meet their team. The next Onderkloof wine tasting takes place on Saturday, 1 September. Onderkloof is situated at 17 Old Sir Lowry’s Pass road, Somerset West.
Onderkloof Tasting Room Open the first Saturday of every month 10:30 - 15:00
Chef Kelly-Ann’s selection of curries are complemented with fragrant rice, homemade roti, poppadoms, and a selection of freshly prepared sambals, not to mention the traditional sides, the Onion Bhaji, the Chicken pakora, and the prawn pakora. These well flavoured curry dishes are complimented by the Benguela Cove Shiraz 2015 – a wine with its seductive nose of beautiful rich and ripe fruit flavours, with a hint of pepper, cinnamon and cloves. Lovers of fine dining will find the Chef’s three course dinner menu liberally laced with all the frills as well as a classic touch. Guests are welcomed with an amuse bouche, followed by a choice of starters of which the Pea and Ham soup and the Avo Ritz are favourites. The most satisfying dishes are along the lines of the Braised lamb shank pie, with herbed polenta, peas, and baby marrow; the Grilled fish, with mash potato, crisp calamari, and tempura spinach; and the Beef Sirloin, with butternut puree, croquette, and pickled butternut. The main course is followed by a selection of delicious desserts such as the White chocolate mousse, with hazelnut biscuit, caramel, and berry ice cream; or the Lemon pot au crème chantilly with lemon curd and vanilla ice cream. These dishes were prepared with great detail, reflecting outstanding quality, superb plating and can be highly recommended. PLANNING IS THE KEY TO PROMOTE YOUR BUSINESS WEBSITE A good website should be easy to navigate. - A website that is easy to use is crucial because if the visitor finds it difficult to navigate from one page to another, he or she will get frustrated and leave the website. Attracting frustrated visitors to come back to visit the site is extremely difficult. Have a clear indication of where the user is - The website’s visitor should always have a clear indication of which site page they are on and how they got there, thus making navigation easier. URL should be easy to remember - One of the most common mistakes in websites is choosing a proper domain name for your company. Your domain name should be easy to remember and easy to spell. Website should be easy to find - Although, once upon a time, the ‘if you build it, they will come’ mantra worked for websites – it no longer does. Due to the fact that there are millions of websites on the Internet, it becomes important for you to ensure that your website ranks high in search engine results and is easy to find. Website should work on multiple browsers - Gone are the days where the only Internet browser that everybody used was Netscape. Today, there are various Internet browsers that people prefer to use. Thus, it
“Someone's sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” - Warren Buffett
becomes imperative that your website will be able to load on any browser – whether that you are using Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari or Google Chrome. Content should be updated often - The real factor that drives a website towards becoming successful is the content. If content is not updated often, visitors of the website have no reason to visit the site often. Layout consistency is Key - It is important for all your website pages to follow a certain layout in order to maintain a theme and uniformity. If the layout of your website pages is not consistent with one another, your website will look untidy and disorganized, thus not properly reflecting your image online. Eliminate Clutter - Another common mistake that many people make is placing as much content as they can, on one page. Often, many people place so much information together that the visitor has an information overload. Layout consistency is key because it allows the website designer to then organize how the content will be laid out in the website.

With drop down menu features, you will never have to worry about overpowering your website visitor with too much information, as you’ll have the opportunity to lead them to the information they need. Website content should load fast In today’s fast paced world, patience is slowly becoming a thing of the past. Website visitors want the website to load fast and want to be able to look at photos, articles, and watch videos immediately. DARLING SWEET LAUNCHES CARAMEL RANGE Darling Sweet, one of South Africa’s premier toffee manufacturers recently celebrated its fourth anniversary and, to mark the occasion, owners Hentie van der Merwe and Frits van Ryneveld, have launched a range of Soft Caramels to sit alongside and compliment their ever burgeoning Toffee collection. “With the launch of these caramels it almost feels like we are celebrating the birth of our second child. Over the last four years we worked hard to get a footprint for our toffees in the confectionery market, so we felt the time was right to venture into a second line of confectionery. The soft caramels are a logical extension to our toffees, seeing as both involve the slow caramelization of butter and sugar, although very different in texture,” says van der Merwe. Younger visitors will feel welcomed at the Festival with a range of exciting activities including storytime at Central Library, Origami Demo Sessions and a workshop for teens to Create Your Own Character. Longstanding partners Leopard’s Leap Wines will be hosting their wonderful #WordsforWine. Bring a pre-loved or new book to exchange for a glass of Leopard’s Leap wine. Books will be donated to the Open Book Library Project and other charities. They’ll also be announcing the winner of their innovative #MessageonaBottle competition. Open Book Festival has established itself as one of the most innovative literature festivals in South Africa. It has twice been shortlisted for the London Book Fair Excellence Awards. Last year, nearly 10 000 people attended the festival’s record 140 events, with ticket sales from previous years surpassed in the first two days. Open Book Festival is committed to creating a platform to celebrate South African writers, as well as hosting top international authors. The festival strives to instill a love of reading among young attendees, with the programme designed to create conversations among festival goers long after the event. Tickets available via Webtickets
“With toffee, it’s only after some time that it starts to release its flavours, while a caramel, with its soft velvety chewiness, is much more eager to please, igniting the taste buds almost immediately. One can almost say that caramels are the yin to our toffee’s yang,” Van der Merwe continues. Darling Sweets Soft Caramels are available in five fabulous flavours: Salted Caramels, Summer Berry, Ginger & Cardamom, Chocolate & Orange and Salted Liquorice. Like with the toffees, all the ranges are certified Kosher and Halaal. Van der Merwe is also quick to point out that they have spent as much time and energy on the packaging for their new product as they did on developing the recipe and different flavours, finally coming up with a stunning design and eco-friendly packaging courtesy of their in-house designer Zanie Wilsdorf.

PLETTENBERG BAY - PENGUIN REHABILITATION & RELEASE Few can argue the feeling of absolute delight one experiences when the stout penguin in its tuxedo-like pelt, waddles by on its way to surf the waves. Such was the feeling of excitement at Plett’s 4th African Penguin release recently, when two adult penguins and eight blues were released back into the wild. But there’s so much more to the eventual release than meets the eye, according to Dr Mark Brown, director of the Nature’s Valley Trust (NVT). Working closely with Tenikwa Wildlife Rehabilitation & Awareness Centre, Dr Brown explains a few crucial steps in the rehabilitation process. Typically, four or more penguins are released at a time and this year, the projection is to do at least three such releases. The factors that necessitate rehabilitation of the birds are varied. Mostly birds that require assistance in Plett are either sick, injured, moulting or have what Dr Brown calls “flat battery syndrome”. Penguins can be affected by a range of illnesses, but the ones most often encountered locally appear to be babesia, a tick-borne blood parasite, and avian malaria. Injuries range from minor cuts and scrapes that may affect mobility or waterproofing of feathers, to more serious wounds inflicted by either other animals, or by entanglements or boat propellers. Moulting birds come ashore to grow a new set of feathers, during which time they cannot swim as their waterproofing is affected. Being on the mainland means exposure to predators, both natural and companion animals, so birds are safely kept in captivity until their moult is finished.
Penguins move around a lot when not breeding, so it is not uncommon to encounter large numbers of penguins at sea in Plett. Presumably, they will stay as long as there’s enough food. Normally, African Penguins will eat around 500g per day, but this can increase to over a kilogram per day when breeding.
The flat battery cases are often down to bad body condition (underweight) and dehydration – they just need some TLC to get back on track and that’s where Tenikwa comes to the rescue.
Sadly, not every penguin that comes into rehab can or will be able to be released back into the wild. Tenikwa has a few long-term captives that are a permanent part of their animal collection, and that play an important role in educating the public about these beautiful birds.
At this stage, tagging the penguins are a very expensive option, however Tenikwa does microchip every bird that gets released, which enables them to track if a particular individual comes back into rehab, is located by researchers at one of the breeding colonies, or washes up dead on our shore. The NVT team has a mobile scanner and try to scan every dead penguin reported to them. Chances are high that most of the penguins are from the breeding colony in Port Elizabeth.
Others sadly succumb to their illnesses or injuries. The development of a breeding colony in Plett is definitely still one of the strategies BirdLife South Africa has in place to secure the species in the long term. A colony is currently being developed at De Hoop, and behind the scenes work with Cape Nature and the Department of Environmental Affairs, along with key stakeholders, around a Plett colony are still ongoing.
SA FILM WINS AWARD AHEAD OF WORLD PREMIERE AT US FESTIVAL “Hopefully, it also means that the recognition will create additional awareness and encourage even more people to see the film when it releases.” According to the festival’s criteria, the Green Tenacity Award is given to filmmakers, “who show great tenacity in exploring crucial environmental issues in their work.” STROOP - Journey into the Rhino Horn War tells the shocking and touching story of the ongoing poaching of the rhinoceros and the trade in its coveted horn. Four years in the making, this labour of love saw de Bod and director Susan Scott sell their houses, leave their jobs and move in with their mothers in order to document what is happening in the fight to save the rhino from extinction.

STROOP - Journey into the Rhino Horn War, the locally made documentary film, has been awarded the 2018 Green Tenacity Award by the judges of the Eighth Annual San Francisco Green Film Festival ahead of the film’s world premiere in September. What makes the win and the premiere all the more impressive is the fact that the festival organisers received 350 submissions but ultimately only 26 films were selected to screen and, of those, only five have received awards. Says a delighted Bonné de Bod, who produces and fronts the film: “We are over the moon at receiving this prestigious award and it makes all our hard work and dedication to this film that much more worthwhile.”
Initially setting out on a six-month project it became a dangerous and intense expedition for which the passionate duo often found themselves in immense danger. In an exclusive first, de Bod and Scott filmed special ranger units inside the world famous Kruger National Park and at the home of the white rhino, the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park and travelled undercover to the dangerous back rooms of wildlife traffickers and dealers in China and Vietnam. The result is a hard-hitting - and ultimately moving - documentary that challenges and shocks viewers. Through unprecedented footage, Scott and de Bod have created a stunning, independent film - made with crowdfunding and grants - that shows why this hunted and targeted species deserves to live in dignity, free from exploitation by illegal traders, poachers, money men and corrupt governments. STROOP - Journey into the Rhino Horn War will premiere in South Africa in February 2019 after its film festival run overseas.

Entries to Africa’s only IAAF Gold Label-status road race are pouring in as runners from South Africa and around the globe prepare for the springtime event on 23 September 2018 in Cape Town. Last year over 20 000 participants from all over the world ran the various courses, with the marathon itself hosting a field of just over 10 000 entrants, cementing its position among the continent’s most popular roadrunning events. “International top-flight support for the event grows yearly, and this year we have three Ethiopians, four Kenyans, and one representative each from Australia, the UK, Namibia, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe running alongside South Africa’s top marathon runners Stephen Mokoka, Desmond Mokgobu, Xolisa Tyali, Lebo Phalula, Nolene Conrad and Lebogang Phalula,” says race ambassador Elana van Zyl-Meyer. No fewer than 50 charities from across South Africa are affiliated with this year’s event, with the programme designed to promote change in health, sustainability, peace and development. Other organizations involved include Endurocad, a distance-running and endurance-sports academy; The Jag Foundation which uses sport as an educational tool to develop life skills in communities affected by gangsterism, drugs and abuse, and the Stellenbosch University who is using the marathon as a major catalyst to drive interest in its #Move4Food initiative. With spectator support being a crucial component in spurring on the runners, organisers of this year’s Sanlam Cape Town Marathon are encouraging the broader public to support the race on the day by simply making their way to any one of the specially created spectator zones which will feature a mix of live entertainment, food and drink, and together bring the “gees” needed to keep the runners going. While the marathon itself is the pinnacle of the festival, on Saturday, 22 September the two Peace Trail Runs (22km and 12km) take place, as well as a 5km PEACE Run/Walk, with the 10km Peace Run on Sunday. Gary Kirsten - Appeals to coaches to coach for the right reasons
The 2018 Powerade Performance Academy celebrates everyday coaches and will focus on giving credit to everyday ‘ordinary’ coaches who have done extraordinary things by refining the young talent that eventually goes on to perform on the world stage.
Kirsten strongly convicted in equipping the players to think for themselves on the field, in preparing a team to adapt to a complex unpredictable environment instead of following a plan. Coaches are often criticised, and need to be able to take constructive criticism from the correct channels.
Recently, Powerade Performance Academy at NMMU saw former Protea’s coach, Gary Kirsten, appealing to school coaches about coaching for the right reasons. The reasons he mentioned were to include seeking to develop players as people that believe in the team’s culture, purpose, focusing on the players and not on solely winning games.
To be a successful leader or a coach one needs to understand that he/she has direct input in the player’s lives, which can help them set up common goals that are aligned to the core team values. The next leg of Powerade Performance Academies will take place in Cape Town in September 2018.
Kirsten appealed to coaches who were present on the day to coach their players in a similar way they would like to be coached. Kirsten recognises that there is a huge pressure in schools for the teams to perform and win. Nevertheless, coaches must first grow the individual and only when the individual has shown tremendous growth, the coaches can eventually begin to look at winning which would in turn boost the team’s morale. “Winning is the result of all the hard work, determination and patience coaches have for their players and that is a recipe for a successful team,” he said. Sharing his thoughts on leadership Kirsten believes the coach is responsible for the shared sense of purpose and culture. Each player in the team needs to change something they do, so they can get a different result. A team needs a common goal that everyone understands and is aligned to the team’s core objectives. It is important to note that the team goals always come before personal goals and this is one of the non-negotiables to be instilled in a team.”

Race wide open for Torpedo SwimRun Cape Events
Organizers of the Torpedo SwimRun Series have announced a prize purse of R 100k for the Torpedo SwimRun Cape that takes place in November 2018 along the Cape Town Atlantic coastline. Torpedo SwimRun is rolling out the series across South Africa with Cape as the pinnacle race, and Torpedo SwimRun Wild is set to take place in freshwater rivers, forest and on the beaches of Wilderness in September. SwimRun is a ‘battle of the sports’, with athletes at the top of their respective disciplines excelling at different elements on the Torpedo course. It’s the allrounder that wins this event, athletes that have both the mental and physical strength and the ability to read and race the natural coastal course. At the first two Cape events in 2017, local Llandudno lifesavers were the quickest over the rock scrambling sections and the technical swims, with local ocean knowledge giving them the upper hand at reading the ocean currents and lines. The speed of the top triathletes is unmatched over the open road, and ultra trailrunners Ryan Sandes and Kane Reilly were on the podium at the inaugural event in January 2017, with their speed over the running segments giving them an advantage. Richard McMartin, co-founder of Torpedo SwimRun, said: “The growth of any sport comes from its athletes, and this prize purse is a reflection of both the global explosion of SwimRun and our intent that Torpedo will be a race that all professional multi-sport athletes aspire to win.” Michael Lord is a 22-year old triathlete who, with his teammate Namibian JP Burger, has won both the inaugural and the second SwimRun Cape events held last year. Says Michael: “The increased prize money for the 2018 Cape Town event is a big step towards attracting high calibre racers from other disciplines, and perhaps beginning to create athletes focused solely on the SwimRun series. It’s been a pleasure to witness the enthusiasm as this race has developed, and I hope to continue to enjoy this unique way of experiencing our beautiful landscapes.”
Alexandra Quinet and her brother Nick won the mixed race in November, and she will this year partner with triathlete Vicky van der Merwe who recently won the Momentum BIG5 Challenge in Knysna: “After we saw videos and images from the inaugural SwimRun, Nick and I did not want to miss out. Going in we didn’t know what to expect - we got tips from previous racers and practiced swimming with shoes on. This race offers the most beautiful views, incredible terrains and proved to be such an challenging adventure. It was the most fun, tough, and beautiful race we have ever had the privilege of racing - and right at our back door!” “I thought I had seen incorrectly when I read the mail concerning prize money for the Cape race. There are no races locally where one can win this sort of money doing something that you love,” she added. McMartin concluded: “South Africa has both extraordinary race routes and the adventure minded athletes to give SwimRun an exciting future.” For more information visit www.torpedoswimrun.com
