The team at Kuzuko Lodge confirmed on 10 September 2018 that Sylvester the lion and his lioness mate Angel, are officially the parents of two lion cubs, when the two little cubs started moving around together. According to De Lange, General Manager at Kuzuko Lodge the cubs are approximately 12 weeks old and in good health. South Africa’s most famous lion, known as Sylvester, was born in Karoo National Park in 2012. He shot to fame in June 2015 when he escaped from the Park for the first time. During Sylvester’s three-week walkabout in the Karoo he covered over 370 kilometres, crossing a number of private properties – killing 28 sheep, a Nguni cow and a kudu along the way.

Sylvester The Lion Becomes a Proud Dad of Two Beautiful Cubs (continue from page 1) This collar alerted authorities on 28th March 2016 that the lion had once again left the park’s boundary, and played a big role in tracking him and returning him back to the park much quicker – three days later on 31st March. Sylvester was translocated to Addo Elephant National Park in May 2016, and into the Kuzuko Contractual Area of the Park, where he has settled and established himself as the dominant male – in what conservationist’s hope will become a pride of four lions in the area.

From the moment he arrived Gerhard De Lange, bonded him into a coalition with another young male from Addo, Fielies – it fitted Sylvester like a glove. The new coalition was introduced to two young females and eventually opened up out of the original holding boma on 11 November 2016 with the females into a 300ha camp. On 21 January 2017 the four animals were released onto the 15 000ha Kuzuko Reserve.

CAPE TOWN RANKED AFRICA’S TOP CITY OF OPPORTUNITY
Cape Town has been dubbed the African City of Opportunity, according to a recent research report published by PwC Overall, Cape Town ranked 24th out of all 31 cities, 6th out of the middle-income country cities (behind Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Moscow, Shanghai and Mexico City) and 1st in Africa. The report benchmarks Cape Town against 30 of the world’s leading cities across 66 indicators of urban success. The 30 cities identified are global centres of finance, commerce and culture and represent among them a sizeable proportion of the world economy. The 66 indicators were grouped under 10 key variables including: Intellectual capital and innovation; technology readiness; city gateway; transportation and infrastructure; health, safety and security; sustainability and the natural environment; demographics and liveability; economic clout; ease of doing business and cost. Blaauwberg Nature Reserve First Green Coast Site Launch The Blaauwberg Nature Reserve was awarded the first WESSA Green Coast award in South Africa. The launch that took place on Friday, 14 September saw the Friends of Blaauwberg Conservation Area (BCA) receive their WESSA Green Coast award. The Friends of BCA and the City of Cape Town is the implementing partner and have ensured that the Blaauwberg Nature Reserve have met all the WESSA Green Coast criteria. Blaauwberg Nature Reserve was proclaimed a local and provincial nature reserve in 2007. The reserve has a spectacular view down fynbos slopes, across the city, to seven kilometres of rocky and sandy coastline and the ocean and beyond. The reserve presents itself as one of the few viewpoints in the world from where you can see two proclaimed world heritage sites, namely Table Mountain and Robben Island. The reserve effectively conserves critically endangered fauna and flora species, one of which is the African Black Oyster catcher. According to Rob Slater, WESSA National Coastal Coordinator: “The Blaauwberg Nature Reserve has shown ongoing commitment to conserving and monitoring its sensitive coastal areas and maintained a high standard set out by the WESSA Green Coast criteria.”

Landscape Art Focuses On Maties’ Contribution To Agriculture This land installation art project consists of two giant circles that have been planted with wheat and canola. Each circle is 100 metres in diameter. Renowned South African landscape artist Strijdom van der Merwe explores the fragile interaction between humans, nature and agriculture in this project titled “The Earth”. Van der Merwe developed this concept as commissioned work for the Faculty of AgriSciences at Stellenbosch University (SU). This unique project is part of the faculty’s centenary celebrations this year. The circles were planted among wheatfields on the farm Boontjieskraal in the Overberg (next to the N2, in the direction of Riviersonderend when travelling from Cape Town). It can be seen from the highway and is increasingly visible due to the crops growing well after recent rains. Van der Merwe, who studied at SU, says he has been looking forward to creating such an artwork for a while. He used an ancient symbol that appears in many of the world’s ancient rock engravings in this artwork. “The symbol – a circle with a cross in it – is considered one of the earth’s oldest known symbols,” he explains. This artwork was especially inspired by rock engravings at Driekopseiland near Douglas. Thousands of rock engravings, including this symbol, are visible at this particular site. The almost 4 000 engravings documented on a rocky outcrop in the Riet River at this site are mostly abstract or geometrical petroglyphs. These engravings are only visible when the water level is low. The circular symbol has also been used in the Constitutional Court’s coat of arms, Van der Merwe points out. “We have now used this symbol in a modern-day agricultural context. This living installation will change colour with the seasons, turning from green to yellow and brown. This represents the cycles of nature and life.” The quarters of the symbol also represent the natural elements of fire, water, air and soil. “These elements are central to agriculture and the landscape artist’s work,” Van der Merwe explains. “In agriculture, everything relates back to the soil, whether you have livestock or plant wheat.” Van der Merwe’s work has been included in many international and national exhibitions. He has also received many international accolades for his art.

Most of his work captures a moment in time because it is deliberately left to be weathered by the elements. Van der Merwe says he is very excited to see how the project unfolds over time. “Land art, like farming, harnesses the earth and the elements. It involves a long and patient process. It all depends on nature.”
Innovative Decentralised Wastewater System Offers Massive Water And Energy Saving Benefits Dignitaries in attendance included Premier Helen Zille, Premier of the Western Cape, United States Consul General, Ms Virginia Bayers, and Seward “Skip” L. Jones Jr., Deputy Assistant Secretary, Middle East & Africa, International Trade Administration. Both Premier Zille and US Consul General spoke of the opportunities available for cooperation, sharing of technologies and know-how between the two countries. Applying one’s mind to the problem, finding the ‘dots’ then joining the dots. This was exactly the process involved in the success of the Clarus Fusion System. Encouragement, logistical support and resources were always on hand through Wesgro and the US Consul. Premier Zille also highlighted that Western Cape Government it is not all about talk and policy, but rather, invest in sustainable infrastructure.
The WCG building in the CBD of Cape Town is currently being renovated as part of their renovation program, with installations of Clarus Fusion WWTPs to recycle waste water for toilet flushing saving 4000 litres of water per day re-using recycled water for toilet flushing. Maskam’s founder and CEO, Gerhard Cronje, outlined advantages of decentralised wastewater systems and differences compared with large conventional systems. The Clarus Fusion system is modular, easily expandable, simple to install and maintain. It has very low energy requirements, able to operate on solar power and recycles treated wastewater on site at less than R2.00/kℓ. Treated sewage can be re-used on site for non-potable applications. Ageing in a New Age

Y
ou only need to glance at the people next to you on the treadmill, or those loading up their shopping trolleys with kale and blueberries, to realise that there’s been a huge shift in how people take care of themselves. From fitness and skincare to diet and overall wellbeing, the perception of the ageing process has changed – and so has the way most people view any related procedures. We all remember the days when Hollywood stars became notorious for bad facelifts that gave them that “windswept look”, along with the sad impression that they couldn’t accept that they were ageing. Today though, this stigma has all but faded away. Why? Well, these days we don’t see that strange look nearly as much - we just see that Jane Fonda and Jennifer Aniston look unbelievably good for their age, and that they want their outward appearance to match their inner confidence. Since the 1980s there have been huge strides in the understanding of why we age, including skin quality, volume and gravity changes. This has resulted in the following innovative developments:
Surgical advances There have been significant advances in facial surgical techniques. Take for example the facelift: in the past, the skin was used to pull up sagging soft tissue in an attempt to ‘lift’ it back to its original position. The problem with this technique is that skin is designed to cover the face and not support it. This placed enormous tension on the skin, which not only caused unsightly scarring around the ears, but also created an unnatural “windswept” appearance. These days, we use techniques like the High SMAS facelift. This elevates the underlying supportive structure of the face to its former, more youthful position, allowing us to then re-drape the skin naturally over the new, more chiseled face contours. Importantly, the skin is sutured without tension and so, along with the discreet position, scars have a smoother healing process and with time, appear seamless.
New, active ingredients Today, you can access high quality home skincare products and medical grade treatments like microneedling and chemical peels with prescription-strength active ingredients, which make a difference to your skin’s quality on a cellular level. The earlier you start them and the better care you take of your skin, the more you roll back the ageing process, and the later you need to opt for plastic surgery - if at all. PAN-FRIED ASPARAGUS & PARMA HAM WITH HOLLANDAISE A PERFECT MATCH FOR THE SPIER SIGNATURE CHENIN BLANC
These Parma ham-wrapped asparagus spears make an elegant starter but can also add magic to a larger festive spread as a side dish – especially when served with a crisp glass of Signature Chenin Blanc
4. Wrap each asparagus spear with a thin sliver of Parma ham. Heat the olive oil in a wide non-stick pan, then fry for just a few minutes until the ham is golden, turning it over. Transfer to a serving platter, then top with hollandaise, toasted almonds and micro herbs. Serve at once.
FOR THE HOLLANDAISE SAUCE: (serves 4 AS A STARTER)
· 3 extra-large egg yolks · 30ml (2 tablespoons) lemon juice (or apple cider vinegar) · Pinch of salt · 150g butter, cubed FOR THE ASPARAGUS:
· About 16-24 asparagus spears (not too thin) · 16-24 slices Parma ham, very thinly sliced (roughly 120-150 g) · 15-30ml (1-2 tablespoons) olive oil · 1/4 cup (60 ml) almond flakes, toasted in a dry pan · A handful micro herbs, for serving (optional)
About the wine: Signature Chenin Blanc
A 2017 Veritas Double Gold winner, this unwooded Chenin is crisp and fruity with green guava, pear, apple and hints of litchi on the nose. Maturation occurred on the fine lees for another three months to give extra body and elegance. It has a wellbalanced palate and a lingering finish.
Method:
1. Make the hollandaise first, because then it will be ready when the asparagus is fried. Place a small pot filled with 5cm water on the stove and heat to a slow simmer. In a slightly wider heat-proof bowl (glass or stainless steel), add the yolks, lemon juice and salt. 2. Place the bowl over the simmering water, taking care that the bottom of the mixing bowl doesn’t touch the simmering water. Start whisking the egg mixture immediately, whisking steadily as the mixture heats up. When the mixture starts to thicken (after about 3 to 5 minutes), add a few blocks of butter and keep on whisking as it melts into the mixture. 3. Keep on adding more butter until all the butter is melted and incorporated, and you are left with a thickened custard-like sauce. If, at any stage, your mixture becomes too thick or looks like it wants to split, remove it from the heat and add more cold butter to bring the temperature down, then continue as above. Remove from the heat when ready and set aside until ready to use. Add a tablespoon of boiling water to the mixture to bring it back to pouring consistency just before serving, if necessary.

A TIME FOR GROWTH FARMER NEIL SHARES THE SEASONAL SECRETS OF OUR FOOD GARDEN
With the arrival of spring, our Werf Food Garden is building up its reserves for the frenzied growing of the summer season. Days are becoming longer and sunnier and the soil temperatures are starting to rise. This is good news for our summer crops as they’re dependent on long daylight hours and warmer soil temperature for them to be healthy and happy. Sun-loving produce that make a flower and then fruit – such as tomato, eggplant, baby marrow, butternuts and watermelons – have all been waiting for the spring so that they can make the most of the longer daylight hours. We also continue to sow all our root and leaf crops throughout the new season: basil is intercropped with tomatoes and eggplants, while spring onions is with lettuces. We find that mixing our pea crops with carrots results in the sweetest baby carrots! We sow our seeds with a seedling mix consisting of sieved worm casting (worm fertiliser from our worm farm) compost with vermiculite and bone meal. Spring is the time to give our fruiting trees a good dose of compost and wood chips and sucker any water shoots coming up from the roots.

Alford lives in Makhaza, Khayelitsha – which he runs to work from, daily! It’s little wonder that he recently completed his first marathon in four hours.
We focus on weeding every two weeks to ensure that the new spring weeds are kept under control. As with so much of organic gardening, our approach has a light touch. We use a weeding tool to kill all the tiny weed seeds as they germinate. This is because yanking large weeds out the ground disturbs the soil structure and allows space for new weeds to germinate. As snails love spring, this is the time to use beer traps or an organic snail bait such as ferramol. We tackle caterpillars with Kirchhoff’s Margaret Roberts (Dipel) Biological Caterpillar Insecticide – a bacteria that only affects the caterpillar, leaving all our beneficial insects in peace. Plants are only being attacked by pests if their immune system is weak, so good worm compost and weekly foliar sprays really help to boost nutrients that might be missing from the soil. We use Biogrow’s extensive range.

Material Gains showcases selected works from Spier’s diverse collection of contemporary African art. Curated by Candice Allison, the exhibition explores the concept of ‘material’ – defined as both intangible ideas and physical substance. Created by artists from across the continent – including South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Congo and Nigerian – these works span the mediums of painting, photography, bead work, sculpture, crochet, embroidery and found materials. INFINITY NEW BOTTLED WATER HARVESTED FROM THE AIR There are many bottled waters on the market; but water harvested from the air, is unique. Infinity Air Water is a new bottled water company whose source is the humidity in the air. This special condition makes the water perfectly pure, soft and alkaline (pH8). LINTON PARK ESTATE RAISE R100 000 FOR RHINO CONSERVATION Linton Park Estate near Wellington in the Cape Winelands raised a substantial amount of R100 000 for rhino conservation in South and Southern Africa. At a special World Rhino Day celebration event held at the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre in Cape Town on Saturday, 15 September 2018 the estate’s donation was handed to Les Carlisle, the Group Conservation Manager of the AndBeyond Group & Project Manager of Rhinos Without Borders (RWB). This is the 3rd year running that Linton Park supported the RWB campaign for rhino conservation in cooperation with the Wellington Hugo Rust Primary School with their own fundraising drives.

The amount of R282 000 was raised in three years. From a modest beginning in 2016 with a total donation of R55 000, the estate and Hugo Rust Primary jointly raised R282 000 during the three year period from 2016 - 2018. Linton Park, with a founder’s history dates back to 1699. The Camellia plc. business group bought Linton Park in 1995 and started with an extensive restoration programme reinstating the estate to its former glory and was completed early in 2017. Herman le Roux, Linton Park’s Commercial Director, explained the estate’s support for rhino conservation: “We fully endorse Camellia’s global philosophy of environment and nature conservation wherever possible.” “In view of the fact that we have a sensitive and threatened ecosystem on the estate that is a distinctively rare South African, commonly known as ‘Renosterveld’ – we decided to commit ourselves to conservation on a wider scale and also specifically to saving rhinos as a precious part of South Africa’s unique cultural heritage.” He elaborated: “It is unfortunate that the continued existence of rhinos on the African continent and in our country is in serious jeopardy and very much under financial pressure.” “We make our donation to contribute to this special saving rhinos cause. We also want to show our support for the invaluable work that champions such as Les Carlisle, his colleagues, the Rhinos-Without-Borders teams and others do in this regard.” Under the Inspirational leadership of Ronel Saayman, project leader and teacher at Hugo Rust Primary, the pupils of the school have since 2016 joined forces with Linton Park in the fight to save rhinos. A range of colourful hand-produced rhino icons by the pupils attracted wide public interest and support. One Rand per bottle for Saving Rhinos Le Roux added that the estate’s donation was made possible by the sales of the Linton Park ’Rhino’ wine range during the previous financial year – highlighting their excellent Rhino Cabernet Sauvignons and. Chardonnays. Consequently R100 000 was accumulated by one rand per bottle sold for rhino preservation.

It acknowledges that our region has suffered its worst drought in history, but shows how we’ve got through the crisis and that our extraordinary destination is “all still here”. Each video features an internationally acclaimed local surfer explaining their personal relationship with water, and how the recent drought affected not only them, but the province as a whole. South African athletes have been given a stronger voice within Swimming SA (SSA) with the launch of a more inclusive Athletes’ Committee (AC) headed by swimming legend Penny Heyns. The athletes’ committee consists of eight athletes representing artistic swimming, swimming, water polo, masters swimming, disability swimming, open water swimming and diving. The committee comprises of athletes that are actively competing at the highest level including London 2012 Olympic champion Cameron van der Burgh, Commonwealth Games double gold medallist Tatjana Schoenmaker and Open Water 5km world champion Chad Ho. Heyns, who is the only woman in history to win both the 100m and 200m breaststroke gold medals at the Olympics following her double at the 1996 Atlanta Games, is also the chair of the FINA Athletes Committee and a member of the FINA Bureau. “It started from the FINA committee where we strongly urged all national federations to have an athletes’ committee.” Heyns said. She explained that the purpose of the committee is to give athletes a platform where they can give their input and bring their concerns to the governing body and the executive committee.”

Jordy Smith is hailed as South Africa’s top surfer and most successful – currently ranked fourth in the world and finishing runner-up on the World Surf League table twice. Despite being on the road to compete year round, he is locally based and a proud ambassador of Cape Town and the Western Cape.
Heyns said she was inspired by the enthusiasm from the members of the newly formed committee and the contribution they want to make in making aquatics one of the leading sports in the country. There were already some productive discussions that took place and some really good ideas that came from the athletes on what Swimming South Africa can do for the other disciplines.
Frank Solomon is hugely popular and celebrated as one the Mother City’s top big wave surfers. No stranger to the camera, he’s the star of the Emmy Award-winning mockumentary ‘Let’s Be Frank’. Hailing from Hout Bay, Frank is passionate and actively involved in eco-friendly initiatives, and runs a surf project for underprivileged children.
Heyns said it was important to give other disciplines like artistic swimming and diving a seat at the table and although there had traditionally been a disconnection between the athletes and the governing body there was a shift towards giving the sport’s biggest assets greater say at an executive level.
Mikey February, the first Cape Town surfer to make it onto the World Surf League when he joined the world’s top 34 surfers on the tour this year, is already making his mark on the international circuit. He grew up surfing the waves in Cape Town and the Western Cape and his story is truly inspirational. Instrumental to the success of the videos produced was Sledgehammer Studios - who managed to capture each surfer in their home environments despite the short run times, and Sacha Specker - a local videographer and photographer who generously provided additional footage of all 3 surfers. Heyns said their aim would be to effectively engage with the athlete communities within the various codes both in terms of representing needs as well as information dissemination. Heyns added that a number of initiatives are in the pipeline which will serve to encourage investment in the sport as well as build the image of SSA. Cape Holiday Show Returns Bigger & Better For The Whole Family
As with fine food and premium wines, so too fine art needs to be experienced to be appreciated. Visitors to Franschhoek can once again look forward to a month of artworks and exhibitions, as Art Franschhoek ‘opens it doors’ to the public from 27 October to 25 November 2018. Over the years the valley has established itself as one of the country’s premier art destinations with its numerous art galleries and resident artists. Art enthusiasts can choose to leisurely browse the galleries situated along the village’s main road, alternatively choose to view the artworks on display at some of the wine farms, which include Grande Provence and La Motte. Garden and art tours at Leeu Estate add an extra touch to your cultural outing. The month of Art Franschchoek celebrates these artists, and allows visitors to experience this unique part of Franschhoek. To celebrate the start of this festival of art appreciation some of the participating galleries will be hosting special events during the weekend of 27 - 28 October. One of the highlights during the weekend includes a special wheel throwing demonstration by well-renowned ceramicist, David Walters. The world renowned Everard Read Gallery will be exhibiting major works by some of our country’s finest contemporary artists, in a variety of media. Manzart Gallery is the venue for Marie Stander’s solo exhibition. Marie, who has a large and fast growing following throughout South Africa’s collector community, is best known for her figurative charcoal drawings, large scale portraits, group drawings, as well as near life size drawings. Magnificent sculptures by self-taught, instinctual sculptor, Bruce Little, will be on display at Franschhoek Cellars. Bruce sculpts to capture the spirit of the wild African creatures he has observed and guarded most of his life. Ebony/Curated, with its exquisite displays of fine arts, sculptures and ceramics, will host three solo exhibitions in their respective galleries. Embark on a journey of art discovery as you admire one of South Africa’s greatest masters, Jacob Hendrik Pierneef, at the La Motte Museum, with his Ink on Paper exhibition.
