CAPE TOWN A WORLD LEADER IN WATER CONSERVATION

EYE CARE Page 5

The slight lowering of water restrictions and the associated tariff is possible due to the record-breaking conservation efforts by residents and businesses in Cape Town, the good rainfall over the past months which has helped the dams supplying Cape Town to recover significantly, and the continued roll-out of cutting-edge pressure management interventions by the City. The latter is saving some 70 million litres of water per day and is helping to keep Cape Town’s water usage within an acceptable range for the lowering of restrictions and associated tariffs.

Positive passenger growth for Cape Town in Q3 of 2018

REALTY Page 11

Cape Town is showing its resilience as a preferred direct air destination, with international growth figures in the double-digits for the third quarter of the year. International terminal passengers at Cape Town International Airport grew by 13% for Quarter 3 (July-September) compared to the same period last year. This demonstrates a marked increase - with Quarter 1 (January – March) reflecting 9% international passenger growth, and Quarter 2 (April – June) recording only 3% growth. The increase is a direct result of the extra airline capacity created through the Cape Town Air Access partnership, which has already seen 10 international route expansions and two new direct international connections added to the Cape Town network in 2018.

SYLVESTER THE LION

BECOMES A PROUD DAD OF TWO BEAUTIFUL CUBS

The Blue Flag programme also allows for potential Blue Flag sites to participate in the Pilot Programme. This year 24 beaches across three provinces have been awarded Pilot status and throughout the 2018/19 Blue Flag season, WESSA will work with beach managers and Tourism Blue Flag Beach Stewards from these Pilot beaches, towards the longer-term goal of achieving full Blue Flag status. Speaking at the event, The National Department of Tourisms’, Director of Programme Planning & Implementation, Ms Patience Molokoza said, “Through programmes like the Tourism Blue Flag Beach Stewards that is implemented by WESSA, we can address the issue of South Africa’s youth unemployment. This programme is meant to capacitate the youth and provide skills training and development. Programmes like these would not be possible if it were not for partnerships with municipalities. She also went on to say, “The Blue Flag project has a number of highlights, we have managed to educate and train more than 14000 people over a period of two years and we applaud WESSA for their involvement in this programme.” Vincent Shacks, General Manager of the Ecotourism unit noted that the municipalities, marinas and boat operators who have achieved the prestigious Blue Flag award today are our sustainable tourism champions and all South Africans should be proud of these achievements.

Blue Flag is a voluntary eco-label, so all of the effort and funding that is put into improving these sites is done in the interest of those using them. We are especially inspired by those sites where municipalities, the business sector and local residents are all working together to maintain this standard of excellence”

The team at Kuzuko Lodge confirmed on 10 September 2018 that Sylvester the lion and his lioness mate Angel, are officially the parents of two lion cubs, when the two little cubs started moving around together. According to De Lange, General Manager at Kuzuko Lodge the cubs are approximately 12 weeks old and in good health. South Africa’s most famous lion, known as Sylvester, was born in Karoo National Park in 2012. He shot to fame in June 2015 when he escaped from the Park for the first time. During Sylvester’s three-week walkabout in the Karoo he covered over 370 kilometres, crossing a number of private properties – killing 28 sheep, a Nguni cow and a kudu along the way. After the escape, Sylvester was fitted with a satellite collar which also has a VHF component to find his location should he manage to get out again.

Innovative Wastewater System

Since its launch in 1987, the Blue Flag Programme has continued to grow, not only regarding the number of member countries and sites involved, but also in its range of expertise within marine and freshwater environments. WESSA is proud to be the national implementing partner for Blue Flag in South Africa since 2001.

Offers Water and Energy Saving Benefits

On 11 September 2018 Café BonBon in Franschhoek hosted the launch of Maskam’s Clarus Fusion Waste Water Treatment System - a highly innovative decentralised wastewater treatment system that can save the country billions of litres of potable water.

RETIREMENT Page 9

This is made possible by substituting potable water with recycled water for sanitation, industrial or irrigation use - all at a fraction of the cost, able to revolutionise Maskam’s approach to providing dignified sanitation to disadvantaged and rural communities. The Clarus Fusion Waste Water Treatment System features a unit with local content exceeding 50% and distribution by Maskam Water through a joint venture with licence holders, Zoeller Pump Company, USA. The occasion commemorated the unveiling of the largest single unit yet to be supplied to the local market, which will treat 15 000 litres a day of black and grey water, servicing a community of 100 people.

In his opening address, Deputy Mayor Councillor Dirk Kotzé said, “As the town of Mossel Bay, we are honoured to host the launch of the new Blue Flag season and as the Mossel bay council, we see the importance of local tourists and we try to keep our facilities in good condition to welcome tourists to our shores during the summer seasons.

Cape Town Stadium Naming Rights Process Kicks-Off After following a thorough tender process, a joint venture (JV) company was appointed to kick-start the process of securing a naming sponsor for the Cape Town Stadium, which will help to unlock the commercial potential of the facility. The Cape Town Stadium was placed under the management of a municipal entity which was established on 1 November 2017 to ensure greater commercial flexibility and utilises a management model that is similar to the Cape Town International Convention Centre. SMSA Commercial Consultants, a joint venture company encompassing SAIL, Stadium Management South Africa and S-Factor, was the successful bidder to kick-start the process to secure a naming sponsor. “Being able to secure a naming sponsor will be a key milestone and the next major step in managing Cape Town Stadium as a commercially driven entity. The aim is to generate revenue through commercialisation, to bid for and to attract national and international events to our world-class stadium.” “This will in turn hold benefits for the economy and job creation.”

tenants and commercial users, either of the entire stadium, or parts of its facilities and venues,” added de Reuck.

“The iconic stadium is a multi-purpose venue set in an urban park with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and Table Mountain, one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature. Events such as the World Rugby Sevens, football (with a number of teams being hosted at the stadium), major music concerts, religious and sports events as well as exhibitions and festivals already form part of its calendar of events. The municipal entity of the stadium is developing its business model which incorporates

Dr Jaques Grobbelaar, chairman of the JV, said the team is excited about the naming rights opportunities around the stadium, taking it to market and the potential of a brand being associated with the stadium.

South Africa’s Best Everyday Eateries Announced

“Already home to major international sport, music and entertainment events, this iconic venue in beautiful surroundings could bring more tourism, events and accolades to Cape Town with the resultant benefits,” Dr Jaques Grobbelaar. The JV will assess the commercial potential and value of the stadium naming rights, taking into account South African and international benchmarks, competition and business models. In addition to securing a naming rights sponsor, the JV will develop a business plan with aspects such as timeframes, branding, media and marketing exposure. The plan also needs to take cognisance of increased future value of the naming rights flowing from tenants and users of the stadium as well as the level and magnitude of the events it attracts. After a year-long voting period and adjudication process, the top eateries in each category were, in conjunction with scoring from professional Eat Out critics, determined by public ratings received via the Eat Out app and website (eatout.co.za). 2018 is the fourth year that Eat Out, together with Mercedes-Benz, has invited the public to help select South Africa’s favourite everyday restaurants via the star rating system on the website and Eat Out’s new, exciting app – both of which are easy to navigate. “These awards never fail to excite us, as we find out which restaurants inspire the most devotion amongst its fans,” says Linda Scarborough, editor of Eat Out. “This year the easy-to-use Eat Out app made reviewing that much easier, so we could garner public opinion on as many South African restaurants as possible. We love reading about users’ dining experiences, and look to their star ratings to determine the shortlist. Our professional critics also review each eligible restaurant to determine the final winners in a 50-50 composite score.” The 2018 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Best Everyday Eateries winners restaurants announced at the Cape Town event on 18 October for the Western Cape are: Best Asian-Inspired Eatery: SHIO (winner of this award for the second consecutive year); Best Bistro: Avontuur Estate; Best Burger Eatery: Highly commended – Jerry’s Burger Bar in Blouberg; Best Coffee Shop: Pajamas & Jam Eatery; Best Country-Style Eatery: Ons Huisie; Best Indian-Inspired Eatery: Indian Chapter with Prim Reddy (winner of this category for the second consecutive year); Best Italian-Inspired Eatery: Giulio’s; Best Seafood Eatery: Kyoto Garden Sushi; Eat Out Tramontina Best Steakhouse: Rare Grill.

Cape Town A World Leader In Water Conservation

( Continue from page 1)

remains as low and as stable as possible as we head into the spring and summer months,” said the City’s Executive Deputy Mayor, Alderman Ian Neilson. Dam levels have declined slightly by 0,4% from 19 October to 75,6 % of storage capacity. This drop is due to evaporation caused by the hot and windy weather that has been experienced. With the summer months approaching, it is important to save water sparingly.

Based on the ongoing monitoring of the water situation, and having regard for the sacrifices that Capetonians have made to position Cape Town as a record-breaking world leader in water conservation, the decision was taken to lower water restrictions and associated tariffs conservatively but without delay to provide slight relief to consumers. The highest water restrictions and tariffs were implemented due to the extreme emergency and it is not fair that consumers continue paying at the very highest emergency level.“As further assessments are made, the City will communicate the way forward again. In the meantime, to help ensure that we do not experience a large spike in consumption because of the slight lowering of tariffs, we will continue implementing pressure management across the metro to ensure that water usage

Cape Town must try its very best to remain in the lower 500 million litre per day usage band until another limit is imposed by the National Department of Water and Sanitation. This decision is likely to be made in December. Although the metro has emerged successfully from a crisis situation, consumers are reminded that the permitted usage under Level 5 restrictions is 70 litres per person per day and that the Level 5 tariffs are still on the higher end of the tariff scale. This should be remembered when it comes to household budgeting. Level 5 restriction permits the following: No watering/irrigation with municipal water is allowed; Nurseries or customers involved in agricultural activities, or those with gardens of historical significance, may apply for exemption; No topping up (manual or automatic) of swimming pools with municipal drinking water is allowed; No washing of vehicles, including cars, taxis, trailers, caravans or boats allowed with municipal drinking water; No washing or hosing down of hard surfaces with municipal water; The use of municipal drinking water for ornamental fountains or water features is prohibited; All private swimming pools must be fitted with a cover; The use of any portable or temporary play pools is prohibited; Should borehole/wellpoint water be used for outdoor purposes, including garden use, topping up of swimming pools and hosing down of surfaces, it should only be done for a maximum of one hour on Tuesdays and Saturdays before 09:00 and after 18:00. However, the City discourages the use of this water for these purposes to prevent the over-abstraction of aquifers; The operation of spray parks is prohibited; and No new landscaping or sports fields may be established except if irrigated only with non-drinking water

THE NEWSPAPER

Gansbaai draws whale watchers, shark divers and serious buyers Gansbaai (which includes Kleinbaai and De Kelders), is just over 2-hours’ drive from Cape Town and about half an hour from Hermanus. It is situated on Walker Bay at the foot of the Dynefontein Mountains with a magnificent coastline rich in fynbos vegetation. The close proximity to Hermanus makes the village a popular place for permanent residents who can enjoy the unspoilt surrounds, yet be close enough to the facilities on offer in Hermanus including the big new regional shopping mall, private school and more. According to Marlene Uys, Seeff Gansbaai agent, the town is worldrenowned as one of the best whale watching hot spots and it is here where you can enjoy shark-cage diving and spot the magnificent Great White Shark - both activities which attract visitors from across the world. The entire Walker Bay area, between Gansbaai and Hermanus, is a whale sanctuary and the gentle giants of the southern ocean, the Southern Right Whale, can be sighted within metres of the shoreline where they come annually to mate and calve. These whales spend the summer feeding around Antarctica and then migrate thousands of miles to our waters, where sheltered bays, such as Gansbaai and nearby De Kelders offer the perfect refuge. The spectacular cliffs of De Kelders with its luxurious on-the-rocks beach houses tend to attract wealthy buyers while the town itself offers property to suit every budget, she says. There are stretches of white sandy beaches that abound in the Pearly Beach area, and the village itself has two harbours where fishing trawlers come and go daily. Other attractions include Shark Alley, an abundance of seals and the Penguin colony of Dyer Island. The area is located in the heart of the Cape Fynbos Biome and is surrounded by beautiful stretches of unspoilt Cape fynbos.

Another attraction is the world-famous and much photographed Danger Point Light House which dates from 1895 and has never stopped working, says Ms Uys. Gansbaai is a little coastal town with plenty of facilities and amenities including a shopping centre and a wide range of services to meet the needs of residents. As a tourist hot spot, there are plenty of little cafés, eateries and pubs and of course a host of tourist attractions. The town continues to experience a steady flow of property enquiries and has seen consistent sales volumes over many years as Seeff’s agents believe that coastal properties still offer excellent value and long-term investment potential. Aside from local residents, the area is very attractive to holiday home and retirement buyers.

Selling your home to overseas buyers

When it comes to selling property to overseas buyers, the world is quite literally your shiny oyster. South Africa is a sought after destination for various reasons. It has natural beauty that includes stretches of pristine beaches along the Atlantic and the Indian Oceans, the semi desert of the Karoo, the savanna of the Highveld and the Mediterranean climate of the Western Cape. Yes, the Rand is volatile because the country is classified as an emerging market, but this also means that foreigners get excellent value for their Pounds, Euros and Dollars. When sellers try to list it themselves on the internet, more often than not it is a hit and miss. Buyers and sellers must also be aware of scams. The best approach in terms of putting your property on the international market is to list it with a reputable, trusted multi-national real estate company such as Engel & Völkers.

“E&V has a firm presence in 33 countries, over four continents, which gives a seller the ability to be in a potential buyer’s back yard, so to speak. The listing is in their language, they are viewing the property through a trusted real estate company and person” says Craig Hutchison, CEO Engel & Völkers Southern Africa. In terms of buying trends the market has cooled down dramatically. With the political upheaval, the volatility of the Rand compared to other currencies and general political uncertainty has resulted in people being more cautious, especially where it concerns the Western Cape and other regions that may be affected by land expropriation. “Foreign investors are taking a wait and see approach, especially if it’s their first foray into the country. Those who have already invested in property in South Africa are less concerned as they have visited the country, they’ve experienced the process and realised the worth of property ownership in this market,” explains Gerrit Disbergen, Director Engel & Völkers Financial Services. Foreign investors who are buying their second property are a lot more accustomed to what is happening on the ground as opposed to relying on a variety of news sources, which currently tend to paint South Africa in a negative light. The investment trend is directly related to the instability of the Rand. When it goes through a period of significant volatility, buyers may be more reluctant as they want to see which way it is going to go. However, if foreign investors are willing to take a long-term view of the situation, politically and in terms of currency fluctuations, the benefits are enormous. “If you have a long-term view you get bang for your Dollar, especially if you will utilise the property and live in South Africa on a semi-permanent or permanent basis. That’s still a definite,” concludes Disbergen.

THE NEWSPAPER I grew up on a small farm in the Eastern Cape and plastic surgery was certainly not on my horizon at that stage. I started off doing medicine but soon became intrigued by plastic surgery and, more specifically, cosmetic surgery. When I tell people that I’m a plastic surgeon, they inevitably think of the types of operations performed on reality TV shows like Dr 90210, which unfortunately give plastic surgery a bad name. Here’s why I find it rewarding. Recently, a young lady had a rhinoplasty with me, and she told me a few months later how this surgery had changed her life. Her fiancé no longer complained about her snoring, and even her sense of taste had improved! She had always been called ‘hook nose’ at school but after the surgery, for the first time she caught herself laughing freely with her friends in a public place – something she would have felt too self-conscious to do before. These are the types of cases that keep me motivated, because if I can help people feel better about themselves and more confident, then I’ve done what I set out to do.

PLASTIC SURGERY: Your Common Questions Answered By Dr Rory Dower

5.

What makes a facelift natural looking?

In the past, skin was used to pull up the sagging soft tissue of the face in an attempt to ‘lift’ it back to its original position. The problem with this technique is that skin is designed to cover the face and not ‘support it’, so this created an unnatural or windswept appearance. The SMAS (or superficial musculo-aponeurotic system) is the underlying supportive structure of the face and acts as a 3D scaffolding for the overlying skin. The High SMAS facelift technique elevates the SMAS and repositions it to its former, more youthful position allowing us to re-drape the skin naturally over the new, more chiseled contours of your face. Importantly, the skin is sutured without tension and because of this, scars have a smoother healing process and with time, appear seamless.

My advice to those interested in having plastic surgery? 2.

Not all my patients feel this way after a procedure though, which leads me to the most common questions I get asked about plastic surgery: 1.

Why do women choose to see a plastic surgeon?

Most women who have surgery are not doing it for anyone but themselves. According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, the number of patients having cosmetic surgery increased by 11% in 2017 due to: The “selfie effect” and social media where people are seeing more photographs of themselves and noticing previously unseen imperfections Improved techniques and safety, which have led to better and more natural results Social stigma is less of an issue than it was in the past

The Selfie Effect

Would you choose NOT to operate on someone?

The patients who are happiest are those who have surgery to address something specific that bothers them, for example, signs of facial ageing, very small breasts or very large, prominent ears. I enjoy these surgeries because I see the change they bring to a person’s life. I wouldn’t operate on patients who:

Don’t think having a procedure will suddenly make you love yourself. Experience has shown me that women who are over-critical of their looks and who are generally unhappy with their appearance will still be critical, no matter how well the surgery goes. At some point, you have to learn to love yourself, imperfections included.

Have unrealistic expectations Are not good candidates for the surgery they desire Suffer from Body Dysmorphic Disorder 3. After liposuction, will the fat come back if I gain weight? Liposuction is a contouring procedure. Fat cells are reduced in certain areas, and this is permanent. If you do gain a significant amount of weight after the procedure however, the cells that remain can enlarge, which diminishes the benefits. Overall contour will still remain improved though. 4. Will breast augmentation surgery affect my ability to breastfeed? BBA (bilateral breast augmentation) techniques involve incisions made under the fold of the breast or through the armpit, and are unlikely to affect your ability to breastfeed. There may be more risk with a “smile” incision around the areola, which could injure nerves and decrease the feeling in your nipple area, reducing your let-down response. During breast augmentation, implants are placed behind the pectoralis chest muscle or behind the breast gland. There is no invasive cutting of the gland tissue, as there would be in breast reduction surgery. We can also safely say that silicone does not find its way into the breast milk when using silicone implants.

At my surgery, we’re passionate about helping our patients feel their most confident selves. Find out more at https://www.plasticsurgerycentre.co.za/ or call us on 021 851 4339 with any questions. SPECIALIST MEDICAL SPA

A New Luke Dale Roberts Dawn Say Hello To Salsify At The Roundhouse

Steller Chef Luke Dale Roberts and Chef Ryan Cole opened a new fine dining eatery Salsify at The Roundhouse in Camps Bay. The restaurant’s main dining areas are situated in the inner and outer rings of The Roundhouse. Salsify (Sal-suh-fee): A root vegetable with an oyster-like flavour, popular in old French and modern British cuisine. “I love salsify, it’s the most unassuming of vegetables, with its ugly and rather unfortunate looking exterior, but it is absolutely amazing to work with, full of taste surprises and so versatile”, says Head Chef and operating partner Ryan Cole of Salsify at The Roundhouse, a new addition to the Dale Roberts empire. “I think it’s important to honour the legacy of The Roundhouse and to do it justice with seriously good quality food and service”, says Ryan who adds that Salsify at The Roundhouse will be offering fine dining without the snobbery.” Salsify at The Roundhouse opened its doors on 16 October 2018 with an à la carte menu and in time, says Ryan, this might develop into a tasting menu based on the successes of the à la carte offerings. In reference to the restaurant’s name, a focus on ‘root to leaf’ dining is one of the elements of dishes that are being developed for the menu, there will also be a strong focus on fish. The exciting news comes barely two months after The Test Kitchen was crowned Best in Africa and also named 50th at the World’s Best Restaurants awards in Barcelona. Ryan has worked alongside Luke at The Test Kitchen as Head Chef for the past three years and when the opportunity for a new eatery at the historic The Roundhouse arose, there was no question as to who would be heading things up.

Oktoberfest at Onderkloof Estate Onderkloof Wine Estate, situated on the slopes of Schaapenberg on Sir Lowry’s Pass Road in Somerset West, recently celebrated Oktoberfest with bratwurst, pretzels, locally-produced beer and their award winning wine. Onderkloof’s Tasting Room, now open every first Saturday of the month from 11h00 until 15h00, was bustling with visitors and wine bloggers. Not missing the opportunity, many a wine enthusiast captured a memory of the day by taking pictures of the majestic view across False Bay. All the while enjoying Onderkloof’s quality wines and good company. Some visitors even took to the rolling lawns and started dancing to the tunes of the live band! Handsome winemaker Yves Musfeld entertained guests with tales of Onderkloof’s colourful history since the days of its first owner, Cape Colony governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel.

“Ryan is a quick-minded natural talent, he’s one of the best technical chefs I’ve ever worked with and I trust him implicitly”, says Dale Roberts, who will play an integral role in the new endeavour but who is equally determined to give 29-yearold Cole autonomy in flexing his culinary muscles. Dale Roberts adds that while he will of course be involved in key decisions, he is determined not to impose his opinion too much Ryan has indeed earned his chef’s stripes. He started his career at the age of 16, after a successful week job shadowing in a hotel kitchen led to him working on weekends and during school holidays. After various apprenticeships Ryan made his way to London in his early twenties on a one-way ticket where he worked for a number of years under some of the UK’s rising stars. Back in the Cape in 2015, a chance meeting with Luke and an invitation to come and see how things worked at The Test Kitchen led to Ryan’s entry into the Dale Roberts way of work and thinking, and so his course was set. Like its namesake vegetable, the new fine dining eatery at the historic The Roundhouse in Camps Bay is a space that promises to be full of surprises. On entering Salsify at The Roundhouse, guests will immediately be drawn in by avant garde graffiti produced by international street artist and ‘instigator’ Louis de Villiers. A focal 1.3m bronze sculpture by local sculptor Otto du Plessis, named Salsify, will no doubt be cause for conversation over pre-dinner drinks. This historic building which dates back to 1786 when it was first built as a round guard house, then later used as a hunting lodge for Sir Lord Charles Somerset, Governor of the Cape from 1814 until 1826. Over time The Roundhouse was used as a home, a hotel complete with two ballrooms, tea room and restaurant and its incarnation as a smart, dining talking point is one that Capetonian foodies and fans of the other eateries in the Dale Roberts empire, The Pot Luck Club and The Shortmarket Club, will no doubt celebrate.

Onderkloof Tasting Room Open the first Saturday of every month 10:30 - 15:00

A restaurant that’s been “simmering on the backburner” for 22 years is about to change the way gourmands perceive dining out in Cape Town’s CBD. Simply titled FYN, Afrikaans for fine in what he refers to as the “better half of the word ‘fynbos’”, it’s the realisation of a dream for esteemed Chef de Patron Peter Tempelhoff. If his name and reputation doesn’t sell you on the experience, the location certainly will – the new restaurant has splendid views of Lion’s Head and Table Mountain, and a distinctive lower Manhattan feel which Tempelhoff absolutely loves. He’s got two of the best operators in the business as his partners. Executive chef Ashley Moss, who has been Tempelhoff’s head chef at Greenhouse for the past four years will be in charge of the kitchen. Jennifer Hugé, who has been the restaurant manager at La Colombe for 14 years will be FYN’s general manager. @Onderkloof

It’s too soon to reveal any secrets regarding menu and wine selection, but the cuisine draws inspiration from South Africa’s culture, lore and society as well as Tempelhoff’s many journeys around the world.

Savour sensory ecstasy

crowned Absa Top 10

With Idiom’s Wine & Macaron Experience

This summer at Idiom you can explore interesting and unusual wines through the prism of macarons, the dainty confection that shares an Italian heritage with the celebrated Helderberg winery which overlooks False Bay. It is not widely known that macarons have been produced in Venetian monasteries since the 8th century AD. Only during the Renaissance period, when Catherine de Medici of Florence married Henry II and became Queen of France, did they become more famous when her personal team of Italian pastry chefs made them for her at the French Royal Court. Likewise, the Bottega Family, owners of Idiom, have a proud Italian heritage. This identity is showcased at their popular Italian Festival held annually at Idiom during the first weekend of March. In addition to producing a number of Idiom wines from Italian grape varieties grown on their property, the family also import and distribute an extensive collection of wines from Italy, which is now on display and for sale downstairs at Idiom in the Vinotria wine library. The macarons are made by the pastry team at Idiom, with ingredients that showcase the character of the wines being paired.

Tokara has been recognised as one of South Africa’s top olive oil producers making the cut in the 2018 ABSA Top 10 with its Mission Single Variety Extra Virgin Olive Oil. The Tokara Mission olive oil was one of just three contenders to receive a Gold medal in the Delicate category of the 2018 SA Olive Awards. Being an Absa Top 10 winner is a remarkable achievement and confirmation that their oil is of the highest quality. Tokara’s 2018 Mission olive oil is mild and gentle with a finely balanced grassy, herbaceous character. It is one of two single variety oils and two full flavoured blends produced from TOKARA olive groves on the foothills of the Simonsberg. Tokara is the home of exceptional wines, olive oil and top notch dining on the outskirts of Stellenbosch. Its olive oil journey began in 2000 when co-owner AnneMarie Ferreira decided to produce single variety oils that would set them apart from the handful of South African olive oil producers at the time. TOKARA focuses primarily on Tuscan varieties, each with its own distinctive character and flavour profile. Tokara’s olive oils were among the top achievers in the recent 2018 Sol d’Oro Southern Hemisphere extra virgin olive oil competition, when South Africa swept the board winning all the coveted competition medals. The TOKARA Premium blend secured a medal while the Mission received a special mention in this competition which is dedicated to extra virgin olive oils produced in countries south of the Equator. In addition to the four different olive oils, preserved Calamata olives and an olive paste complete the range.

The first wine in the pairing line-up is an imported Prosecco called Romeo and Juliet, a bubbly sensation from the Veneto region that has been paired with a chamomile macaron. It is followed by Idiom’s Imperium White Gold, an elegant late harvest viognier served with a lemon macaron. The Idiom Imperium Black Gold Hailstorm is the dramatic conclusion made from Merlot grapes pairs with a beautiful flower-decorated blueberry macaron of dark chocolate ganache, violet jelly, blueberry gel and dried blueberry raisins. The exquisite Idiom Wine & Macaron Experience affords visitors the opportunity to not only sample the wares of true vinous and culinary craft, but also to enjoy spectacular bay views. The Exquisite new summer pairing delights will be available from November 2018 till end of February 2018.

SOUTH AFRICA, THE COUNTRY WITH THE MOST BEACHFRONT HOTELS IN AFRICA

According to the research conducted by the hotel search engine for demanding travellers, www.travelmyth.com, South Africa is the country with the most beachfront hotels in Africa. Even though the majority of its provinces are landlocked and only 4 of them are touched by the sea, potential travellers can choose among 781 beachfront hotels to spend their dream vacation. Next on the list are Egypt with 522 beachfront accommodations, Mauritius with 240, Tunisia with 184 and Morocco with 178. The province with the most beachfront hotels is Western Cape with 471 accommodations. As far as the cities are concerned, Cape Town alone has 98 beachfront hotels, thus earning its place on the top of the list with Blouberg in second place, Strand in third, followed by Jeffreys Bay, Paternoster, Wilderness, and Langebaan. Travellers who are interested in organising a trip to South Africa can combine their beachfront hotel search with other categories. Travelmyth has uncovered some of the most popular combinations for South African beachfront hotels and offers some suggestions. For example, 391 of the beachfront hotels also have a pool, while 69 of them are also dog-friendly. For those seeking a luxurious retreat, 34 of the beachfront hotels also have spa facilities, while 26 of them are also 5-star accommodations. “Beachfront” is one of Travelmyth’s 77 category filters. This specific category of hotels is defined by its immediate proximity to a beach. Beachfront hotels may be separated from the beach by a road, but not with other buildings in between. Other preconditions include the accessibility to the beach and suitability for swimming.

The research was conducted with all hotels that are listed in at least one of the biggest online booking sites. The beachfront category currently features 28,000 hotels around the world with about 10% of them being in Africa. Article by Travelmyth

ROBBEN ISLAND MUSEUM PRIORITISES PASSENGER SAFETY The Robben Island Museum management reported to the Western Cape Provincial Parliament’s Standing Committee on Economic Opportunities, Tourism and Agriculture on the progress made since the incident where the chartered ferry, Thandi took on water. Following the incident an in-depth investigation was conducted by South African Maritime Authority’s (SAMSA). All stakeholders were kept informed on the process for continuous service improvement.

‘’We reported on the recommendations that we have successfully implemented since the incident. To date, as Robben Island Museum we’ve appointed two harbour masters and have suspended the use of 25GT vessels until SAMSA regulations are much clearer in regulating these types of ferries. The safety of passengers to and from the Island is a key priority”, shares Ramaboa. Additionally, regular training and safety drills are conducted on a regular basis; passenger lists are now made available on every vessel leaving Nelson Mandela Gateway and the Island. We’ve also introduced mystery shoppers who regularly report on our holistic service as a Museum.” One of the key drivers that led to the incident was as a result of the weather conditions. RIM has subsequently implemented recommendations set out by SAMSA in the investigation report. RIM has installed additional wind monitoring equipment on the Island so that actual wind conditions can be monitored in Cape Town and at Robben Island. As an additional precaution, RIM has updated its systems and processes for the monitoring of weather conditions and weather warnings. Steps have been taken to improve the frequency and quality of weather monitoring reports as well as interactions with harbour masters with regard to weather conditions. RIM has also engaged with Transnet National Port Authority on this added reporting process.

RIM’s management team also reported on the organisations up-to-date compliance with SAMSA’s regulations and this was confirmed by SAMSA in the same reporting meeting. “RIM would like to ensure that the increase in visitors over peak season will be met by an increased capacity to operate and to provide an excellent standard of the tour experience for all visitors,” say Morongoa Ramaboa, RIM Spokesperson.

RUGBY SEVENS SERIES BOOSTS TOURISM IN AFRICA The Rugby Sevens in Southern and East Africa has gained momentum over recent years; drawing in more and more spectators from the international community. Coralie van den Berg, general manager of World Rugby African Association, Rugby Africa, explains that increasingly more tournaments are being developed by unions, especially in Southern and East Africa in partnership with sponsors and broadcasters and, in turn, are contributing to the enhanced popularity of the game. Van den Berg says the Cape Town Sevens, which is part of the World Series, sells out in a couple of hours, attracting huge crowds, with smaller events across Africa attracting various crowd sizes. The size of the crowd depends on how well the event is promoted and commercialised, according to Van den Berg. “The City of Cape Town hosted the South African leg of the HSBC Rugby Sevens World Series in 2016 and 2017, which fed millions of rands into Cape Town’s economy, spending money on flights, accommodation, food, car hire and other transport. In addition, many visitors stay on in the city after the event, often booking tours and purchasing arts and crafts.” Rugby sevens is promoting intra-African travel, according to Van den Berg: “African neighbours are definitely travelling to Cape Town for the World Series tournament in December, which is combined with their summer/Christmas break.” According to Judy Lain, Wesgro’s chief marketing officer, more and more international tourists are visiting Southern and East African countries to watch rugby seven matches and then, as it is a long-haul destination, adding on an African itinerary.“Cape Town and the Western Cape offer a diverse range of experiences, all within a few minutes or hours of the vibrant city centre.”

“For food lovers, the town of George offers the unique experience to dine with the locals, while the Cape Karoo has the best stargazing in the Southern hemisphere. For the adrenaline seekers, there is shark-cage diving and whale watching,” says Lain. HSBC Rugby Sevens World Series leg in Cape Town will take place from 8 - 9 December 2018 Article by Tourism Update

Growthpoint Completes Laser Logistics New Premises At Mill Road Industrial Park It is ideally located near the R300 highway, with easy access to the N1, N2 and R300 highways. The new Laser Logistics premises enjoys excellent highway visibility. It is fairly specialised compared to most storage and distribution warehouses. Built on a raised platform, it includes numerous roller shutters on opposite sides of the structure to optimise its cross-docking capacity. Laser Logistics has put its people at the centre of its property strategy, with its new facility including a canteen, kitchen, and cloakroom area for drivers and warehouse staff. It is also brilliantly located for public transport, with the Sarepta passenger rail station being a mere 300 metres away. The custom developed building also includes some 800sqm of offices for operations, administration and management. A double security perimeter ensures the safety of the facility. Laser Logistics’ dedicated entrance features its own gatehouse admission in addition to the Mill Road Industrial Park access control. The park also has full perimeter security fencing, onsite management and 24/7 security guarding. Growthpoint Properties has completed the R44 million first phase of its new development at Mill Road Industrial Park in Cape Town, which includes a 5,000sqm facility for Laser Logistics.

Phase 1 of Mill Road Industrial Park is currently under construction and scheduled for completion in October 2018. It is already 50% let with some 9,000sqm still available. Phase 2 will follow in due course with 14 000sqm of quality sub-divisible space.

Mill Road Industrial Park is in the established industrial area of Bellville Industria, opposite the well-known Sacks Circle. It is a 40,000sqm storage, warehousing and distribution park development consisting of premium-grade warehouse and office space.

Of particular appeal to warehousing and storage businesses, buildings at the park have stacking heights of 12 metres, ample yard space, and modern offices in the secure park. In addition, the park is energy and water efficient, resulting in lower occupation costs.

UCT Student Tech Start-Up

Cape Town Is A World Leader

Offers Technology And Entrepreneurship Skills To Students

In Inclusive Climate Action That Brings New Opportunities

A team of University of Cape Town (UCT) students have come together to form a start-up company, Zaio. The start-up assists student developers to build an information technology skills profile through coding challenges and practical experience, hopefully helping them to ultimately land their dream job. At the same time, the Zaio platform provides other start-ups with access to affordable web and app development. Zaio was formed in October 2017, when student developer Thando Hlongwane realised that one of the biggest issues he faced was not really having any practical experience. Hlongwane explained: “Guys like Mvelo, who are aspiring entrepreneurs, were finding it very difficult to prototype and create innovations, because it’s really expensive to build tech.” The team comprises of seven students: Mvelo Hlophe, Thando Hlongwane, Mihlali Xozwa, Harjot Singh, Akhil Boddu, Ntuthuko Mpaku and Asif Hassam, all of whom have an interest in technology and entrepreneurship. Technology, and especially web and app development and coding, is often seen as a male-dominated space. The only woman on the Zaio team, Xozwa, who is the finance and community lead, is actively trying to get more women involved with the platform. “We are trying to engage more women and bring more people of colour into this space. We want to make this tech-driven space more inclusive. That’s at the core of our business,” said Boddu. They began turning their attention to introducing things like coding challenges and company tours, to broaden the experiences of developers as they try to build relevant industry skills.

Leading cities from across the globe – including the City of Cape Town signed an equity pledge to commit local governments to ensure climate action is used to achieve development, improve living conditions, reduce poverty and boost economic growth. Cape Town is one of 30 cities, representing close to 100 million people across the world, that has signed an equity pledge that commits cities to inclusive climate action. Cape Town-based company, Sustain Power is manufacturing containerised generators that convert biogas and landfill gas into electricity for heating or cooling. The company’s CEO, Tobias Hobach, was a participant in the City’s funded masterclass and pre-incubation workshop series in 2017. The City supports the South Africa Renewable Energy Business Incubator (Sarebi) to run these programmes in order to encourage local entrepreneurs to innovate and create jobs in the industry. Sarebi assists businesses like Sustain Power with operational support including accounting services, human resources, industrial relations, payroll management, tax and VAT filing and back-end IT support. Sustain Power was in a very early conceptualization stage of their business when the City provided support through Sarebi. It is encouraging to see that within a year Sustain Power is manufacturing their 500Kw BioGas CHP generators from their facility in Cape Town. The company has become the only local manufacturer of gas-to-power gensets in the country. This is a first for the South African economy and the energy sector.

Photo back from left: Mvelo Hlophe, Thando Hlongwane, Asif Hassam, Mihlali Xozwa, Photo front from left: Ntuthuko Mpaku, Akhil Boddu and Harjot Singh

Even more encouraging was to see how the renewable energy company has innovatively partnered with a Cape Town-based company, Unique Group, that in the past provided saturation dive support vessels to the fossil fuel industry but are now using their skills to produce infrastructure for clean energy.

Once a project has been identified, individual developers are grouped together in what Zaio calls clusters. Then, under the direction of a project manager, they build out the necessary prototypes. “Someone who comes to Zaio might ask us to build out a prototype. This is normally an entrepreneur or a start-up. If that’s the case, we will deploy a team of developers. These people are now competent enough to build out a prototype for a start-up,” Boddu added.

This innovative approach shows that, when government creates an enabling environment and platforms, businesses will come up with innovative solutions that build new business sectors and create jobs. Sustain Power and many other companies supported by the incubation programmes show that climate change is not solely an environmental issue, but can inextricably be linked to eradicating poverty by growing the economy and jobs.

There is however an alternative approach. “Another way is that they’re simply looking for manpower – they’re looking for more developers to come on board to help them in their start-up. We are also currently working with corporates who are looking for developers to recruit.”

Gas-to-power, wind and solar are all options the City is exploring. Earlier this year the City announced a R12,7 million agreement with the US Trade and Development Agency to study the possibility of using natural gas.

“Because we are upskilling all of these developers, we have created this development journey and ecosystem and we can easily provide developers to companies,” Boddu concluded.

The City’s Transit-Orientated Development Management Framework and projects aim at creating a more compact, integrated city. “Our ceiling retrofitting project and the installation of solar heaters in low income areas all contribute to our inclusive climate action aimed at addressing climate change and inequality.”

For More Than A Minstrel, Izobell and Peters have written new songs and a new narrative for the show. The original show was launched as a theatre show in 2014 at the Joseph Stone in Athlone, brainchild of Riyaad Peters of Oddball Concepts who wrote the script and produced the show, in collaboration with Loukmaan Adams. In addition to the music and dance, a strong narrative line has always been key to Satin to Sequins.

The iconic Huguenot Monument serves as the spectacular backdrop for the weekend’s festivities, where you’ll have no excuse but to sit back, relax and sample the wide range of local MCC’s and select French champagnes on offer. The grand marquee – the place to be seen – will be oozing style, elegance and sophistication, as you mingle with local MCC producers as well as a handful of international brands. Adding to the superb offering will be a selection of delectable delights, on offer from some of Franschhoek’s world-class eateries. The theme for this year is Black and White, with a prize awarded to the Best Dressed Couple on each day. What better excuse to indulge in some retail therapy beforehand to find that perfect outfit. Children under 18 years will be allowed free entry to the festival. Tickets available via webtickets

Calling all Color Runners The Color Run South Africa is rolling-out the grandest parade yet. On 10 November 2018 the Carnival Tour will be rolling, hopping, skipping (and yes, running) through the streets of Sea Point and Green Point Promenade. As a world first, The Carnival Tour is issuing exclusive medals to all Color Runners that cross the finish line and enter the Festival Zone. The Color Run cares about community, and this includes a conscious effort to ensure that the region only benefits from the carnival coming to town. The Color Run has committed to leaving Cape Town cleaner than before. Over the past five years, The Color Run has perfected the art of the dry clean up. Every drop counts, and not a drop is wasted.

The producers wanted to emystify minstrel culture and give audiences insights into the creativity of contemporary troupes - and the vibrant living heritage that plays out in the streets of Cape Town. Now, with the 4th edition: Satin To Sequins - More Than A Minstrel - there is a thrilling overlap of art and life. New Year festivities are only one part of Cape minstrel culture. Troupes rehearse throughout the year. It’s a competitive - and diverse community- accountants, lawyers, bank clerks. Most troupe members have day jobs. Others work in the arts industry. There is no remuneration – only ‘bragging rights’. The uniting factor is the love of donning the fabulous costumes - satins and sequins, bling - literally climbing into another persona and becoming a minstrel, and brings joy to crowds. Minstrels may be traced back in many directions. One line is when slaves dressed up – during New Year festivities - mocking their masters - and affirming themselves as individuals. In 2018 and beyond, an energetic young generation is taking this inimitable form of street theatre/culture forward. For more information visit www.webtickets.co.za

The event will also be minimising mess and mitigating the need for water-based cleaning (we use only non-potable, and only where absolutely necessary, and usually not at all) through massive PVC sheeting, great-big vacuum cleaners, and muscles – meaning more jobs on the day for the region. The organisers are even collecting all the very colourful race tees after the event and distributing these to the needy. The Color Run is bringing the spirit of the circus, New Orleans Mardi Gras and Rio Carnival to home soil. Come and revel in health, happiness, and community in an atmosphere of pure celebration. The Color Run is the world’s largest untimed running series. It was founded in 2011, with the mission of bringing people together to make the world a happier, healthier place. Dubbed “The Happiest 5km on the Planet”, The Color Run is less about your 10-minute-mile, and more about having the time of your life. The Color Run has now been experienced by over six million runners, in more than 40 countries around the world. Participants begin the event in their white The Color Run T-shirts (and a touch of the carnival) and complete it in a head-to-toe colour extravaganza! This year, The Carnival Tour theme brings with it stilt walkers, balloon shapers, music, goodnatured clowning around, and colour, colour, colour. For more information visit www.thecolorrun.co.za

Cape Town Festival of Beer - World Class Beer Experience for All The Cape Town Festival of Beer once again takes place from 30 November to 2 December 2018. This annual event is hosted at Hamilton’s Rugby Club in Green Point. In its 9th year, the Festival delivers the ultimate beer experience and is the largest festival of commercially available beer in the southern hemisphere. It’s the perfect event for those wanting a fun day out, a tasting experience or a food overload. For the beer lovers, the beer aficionados and the newbies, the range of cider and beers available is unparalleled in South Africa. Along with the promise of an exceptional selection of beer and cider, there is also live music and kids entertainment throughout the weekend. Perfect for the whole family! If you’re after a blueberry cider, a blonde, an amber ale, or a pilsner then the Cape Town Festival of Beer 2018 is where you can find the most comprehensive assortment of brews and fermented beverages around. The Festival features over 60 breweries and distributors and offers more than 200 beers ranging from international mega-breweries such as Stella Artois to local microbreweries such as Drifter, Saggy Stone, Little Wolf and Urban Brewing. Look out for some of the special brews on offer: 2017 saw over a dozen limited edition brews launched at the Festival, there will no doubt be even more in 2018. Martin Tucker, founder of The Cape Town Festival of Beer explains, “Right now brewers are hard at work preparing special brews that have never been tasted before and will be launched at the Festival. We are seeing a new emergence in the market of sour beers, such as Frasers Folly’s Wild Raspberry and the Devil’s Peak Takes Two to Mango (one of last year’s CTFOB’s winners). Sour flavours are becoming more and more popular as are the use of adjuncts like beetroot, pineapple and even coffee and chocolate which are being added to brews for an interesting and more flavourful experience. It’s certainly clear that since the beginning, the Festival has been an incredible platform for showcasing cutting edge beer trends and this year we expect to see a growth in collab brews. A collab brew is when two breweries team up together to develop a special variant on a style to take to market. There is a lot to see this year and we are really excited to be the springboard for new and upcoming breweries and their beers.”

Cider enthusiasts will also be happy to know that there is a great selection on show. This was introduced in 2015 and became very popular with festival goers who not only enjoy their hops but their fruit too. To compliment the savouring of incredible beer, The Cape Town Festival of Beer offers an array of top-class pop-up restaurants and gourmet food trucks. You will be able to find eateries such as Kitchen Cowboys, Love Pizza, and Dos Chidos. The Festival has ample seating and casual picnic style areas where festival goers can relax in front of the large stage and listen to jazz and local live bands. For those who like to party a little later in to the evening, they can look forward to the best line up of local DJ’s and musicians to groove until closing time. Tickets available via webtickets
